I felt the same as you, had the same angst, confusion, guilt, but never actually knew what was ‘wrong’. You are at a crossroads in your life, but , even with so much going on, you sound pretty clued up. The letter is a fantastic way to start the ball rolling, as it not only gives you a chance to tell your side without interuptions, but also gives your parents time to chew it over before they talk to you too. After that, its just a question of time, go at your own pace. Its not a race, take your time and enjoy the real ‘you’ Half the fun is finding your feet and discovery of who you are, Lastly, dont forget to listen as well as talk, you’ll be surprised how much you can learn, none of us know it all, probably never will Hugs Mandy x

Shaving rash is a common problem for men with curly hair, or for women who shave their bikini-line pubic hair. (Pubic hair is naturally more curly than head hair.) The medical term is ‘pseudofolliculitis barbae’ or ‘sycosis barbae’; it is a syndrome also called ‘barber’s itch’ or ‘razor lumps’. Normally, the weight of each individual hair straightens it slightly. When you shave, a remnant of hair is left in the hair follicle. As this starts to grow out of the follicle, it may immediately curve round into the surrounding skin, because there is nothing to keep it straight. The ingrowing hair irritates the skin and can cause a lumpy reaction, especially in black skin (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology 2002;46(2 Suppl):5113–9). The next time you shave, you will nick the tops of the lumps, worsening the inflammation and perhaps allowing an infection to occur.
How to prevent shaving rash Do not pull on the skin. Hairs are most likely to ingrow if you pull the skin while you are shaving, to get a close shave. This makes the hairs pop out of the follicle. Afterwards, the cut tip retracts into the follicle and then turns into the wall of the follicle. Shave in the direction of the growth of the hairs. If the hairs naturally grow downwards, pull the razor downwards. Avoid a close shave. The aim is to shave the hairs just above the skin, when they have already emerged from the hair follicle. Use an electric razor or an ordinary single-blade razor. Double-blade or triple-blade razors give too close a shave. Prepare your skin before shaving, by using a good shaving gel, oil or foam, and thoroughly wet it into the hairs. How to deal with shaving rash. Curing shaving rash is tedious and will leave you with stubble for a few weeks. Analyse the problem. Inspect the area with the help of a magnifying mirror. You may be able to see the hairs curling inwards. Have a good look for tiny yellow pustules, and redness and inflammation around the hair follicles or the tips of the ingrowing hairs – this could mean infection with staphylococci bacteria. If you can see them, try to get the tips of the ingrowing hairs out of the skin. Soak a towel in hot water and put it on the skin for a few minutes to soften the hairs. Then very carefully, using clean tweezers, pull the end of the hair out of the bump. Do not pull the whole hair out of the skin – just the loose end. Then with small scissors cut off the end of the hair that is curling back, quite close to the skin. Stop shaving. Grow a beard and cut off the hair close to the skin with nail scissors (designer stubble look). As the hair grows, it should grow slightly straighter, and not grow back into the skin. If the problem is in the pubic area, stop shaving and remove the hair after a few weeks with a depilatory cream if you wish. If you think the rash is infected, dab on a mild antiseptic such as tea tree oil. The infection may clear up on its own if you stop shaving. If it does not improve after a few days, see your doctor again; you might have a fungal infection. Exfoliants remove the dead cells from the surface of the skin. They will not prevent the hairs turning in, but they may help to flatten the bumps. So if the bumps are slow to settle, exfoliants might be worth trying. Do not use them if your skin is inflamed or infected. There are various types of exfoliants. Facial scrubs usually contain tiny particles of pumice. Alpha hydroxy acids (fruit acids), in creams and face washes, have an exfoliant action. Alpha hydroxy acid creams are often labelled as ‘anti-ageing’; check the ingredients label. 135
Razor Bumps and Ingrown Hair
What are the Symptoms of Razor Bumps and Ingrown Hairs?
The symptoms of razor bumps and ingrowing hair are unsightly red or darkened, painful ‘bumps’ which can lead to ‘scarring’ in severe cases.
What Causes Razor Bumps and Ingrown Hairs?
This occurs when curly hair grows out of the skin, curls round and then grows back into the skin. This happens if the hair is cut too short. Normal hair cut too short will create the same problem. They result in the medical condition pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB). An ideal shave cuts the hair flush with the surface of the skin and avoids any undue friction and/or irritation to the surrounding skin. If you suffer from razor bumps, ingrowing hair and shaving irritation, the chances are that you are pulling the skin too taut during the shave and the hairs are cut too short. Don’t pull the skin tight and see if it makes a difference! People with PFB and razor bumps often have a great tendency to develop ingrown or curled under hairs, which get red, raised and tender. These bumps often leave dark marks on the skin for many months and sometimes even cause scarring.
Who Tends to Suffer with PFB?
While PFB can occur in all ethnic groups, it is most common in those with very curly hair and especially amongst African Americans.
What Treatments are Available?
Treatment of tough cases of PFB often requires special shaving equipment. In fact, some African American men have opted to wear a beard rather than be subject to the pain and embarrassment that often accompanies severe PFB. Special razors have been developed that cut the hair slightly longer than typical razors. These razors are available as part of an entire product line called the Bump Fighter ® Shaving System designed exclusively to help control PFB. In addition to these products, Skin food is also helpful for many PFB suffers. For most people, these over the counter products provide sufficient control of shaving related problems. In fact, there are no prescription products targeted specifically for shaving related problems. Vitamin A related products such as Retin A (tretinoin) or Differin (adapalene) may be prescribed in some cases and work by helping exfoliate skin both on the surface and around the follicles. This results in less chance of the hairs getting caught in the skin and growing inward. Shaving related problems usually respond well to a combination of proper shaving technique, equipment and products. For tough or treatment resistant shaving problems, it is always best to consult personally with a dermatologist.
What Can I do to Help Prevent the Problem?
In addition to the tips on shaving , you might find benefit in the use of certain shaving devices and products. The products and devices tend to be specialized towards serving either those people with tendencies toward ingrown hairs or those with a tendency towards razor bumps and PFB. A large majority of PFB sufferers and sufferers of shaving problems generally tend to be African American. The reason for this is that very curly hairs are most inclined to grow inward or curl around to form razor bumps.
136
Ingrown hairs and shaving irritation can be greatly improved by simply following these shaving tips . No special shaving equipment is suggested, but experience has shown that re-usable metal shaving handles serviced with disposable blade cartridges tend to provide smooth shaves with less chance of causing shaving irritation and ingrown hairs than electric razors. Blades should be changed at least once every ten days, more often if skin irritation persists. Disposable razor blades should are also best avoided when possible. Shaving gels are important in the treatment of this condition, as a good gel will minimize the friction associated with shaving and reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
Products that Can Help
One product we recommend is PFB VSH . This is a unique, cosmetically elegant roll-on gel formulated to aid in the relief of ingrown hairs, razor burn/bumps resulting from shaving, waxing, electrolysis and laser hair removal. PFB VANISH exfoliates skin cells to “lift ingrown hairs” above the skin line. Skin food is another product that can be applied daily after shaving. It is effective at fighting ingrown hairs and helps calm redness associated with hair removal. http://www.hqman.com/the_perfect_shave/1612/feature.html
4 STEPS TO A PERFECT SHAVE 1) Wet shaving It’s best not to shave first thing in the morning as your face will be puffy. Ideally take a shower before shaving, if this is not possible wash your face for a few minutes before. The cleaning removes dirt, oil, and dead skin and any other debris that can get between your skin and the razor, the hot (not scolding) water will soften the whiskers open the pores and relax your facial muscles. Keeping your face wet before and during the shave puts a layer of water between your face and the lather, the blade will skim the surface instead of dragging and tugging, dragging means the hair is not being neatly sliced and will cause irritation, redness, and bumps. 2) Shaving cream and brush Stop using your fingers to smear cheap shaving gel that smells like deodorant on your face. Use a good quality glycerin-based shave cream which lubricates and protects the skin. Watch out for products containing irritating ingredients such as alcohol, menthol, mint, and camphor. Also beware of potassium or sodium hydroxide, they are designed to force the hair up and away from the skin by making the hair follicle and skin swell, supposedly for a closer shave, but because of the swollen skin some of the hair will be hidden, when the skin deflates, hairs may become trapped under the skin causing ingrowing hairs. As always if a product burns, irritates, tingles, causes the skin to become inflamed, or hurts, don’t use it. Use a good shaving brush, the best brushes are made of badger hair. Dip the tip of the brush in hot water, it will absorbs the water and then when you whip the shaving cream up releases and mixes water with the shaving cream, this delivers a thicker, richer, more emollient lather. When you apply, skim the brush back and forth across your face and neck in and up-down motion, the up-down brushing lifts your whiskers and suspends them standing upright in the thick lather exposing the maximum whisker length to your blade as it skims along your face. 137
3) The razor The basics are: • Disposables; the quality of the blades usually isn’t good making then very hard on your skin, not recommended. • Cartridge razors; a better choice, the Gillette Mack 3 is the most popular and defiantly one of the better ones. • Double edge safety razor, you’ll get a closer and more comfortable shaves than with a cartridge razor, but handle with care. • The classic cut throat razor for the most adventurous. Which ever razor you choose, use a sharp, clean razor (if your using a safety or cartridge razor change blades every three to four uses, depending how heavy your beards is). Begin shaving in the direction of the hair growth, shave first in the places where the whisker are not at their thickest, this ensures the thicker whisker a little longer to be softened by the shave cream and hot water on your face. Whist shaving keep the razor clear by frequently rinsing it with hot water. If you want a closer shave, wet your face again, lather up again, and shave very lightly against the direction of the hair growth. Go gently, many men find shaving against the grain causes redness, razor burn, and ingrown hairs. 4) Aftershave lotion or moisturiser When you’ve finished shaving, wash off any remaining shaving cream by splashing cool water on your face this will close pores calm the skin, and invigorate . Pat skin dry (do not rub-rubbing can irritate freshly shaven skin). Finish by applying a moisturiser to replace the moisture you just scraped away or a shaving lotion (these are basically just gentle toners) Avoid applying any products with alcohol.

Don’t Panic! Don’t Panic! Corporal Jones’ well known phrase comes to mind when I relate our last trip out in 2008. With autumn well on its way, Beccie and I agreed to arrange another outing before the cold and wet days of winter arrived. We chose a day in late October with the venue of Oxburgh Hall, a National Trust attraction located just 7 miles south west of Swaffham, off the A47 road between Norwich and Kings Lynn. This time we were to be joined by Gill, who had accompanied us to Houghton Hall earlier in the year, and Sian, a new girl to this sort of thing. Prior to the day I was undecided as to what outfit I should wear, although the sudden arrival of cold weather precluded a summer outfit! In fact the day before our outing saw parts of England experiencing the earliest winter snow for some time. The day dawned sunny and bright, but cold! The outfits I had packed the night before allowed for that – or so I thought! More on that later…
143
I set off from home at around 8.15 allowing time for a change from male to female clothing en route. Some twenty minutes later I pulled in to a secluded lay-by away from full view of the main road. I parked up and retrieved my feminine wear from the boot to the passenger side of the car. I started by removing my jeans and underwear and replacing them with my white knickers and black opaque tights. Then it was the turn of the top half. I replaced my shirt and jumper with bra (including my breast forms), slip and black and white jumper. Next was the black skirt – but I couldn’t find it!! I was sure I packed it the night before. I searched the floor, underneath the seat, the boot, everywhere but I couldn’t find it! Apart from panic, I wasn’t sure what to do next. After calming down somewhat, I decided that the only way I could get to Oxburgh Hall in fem mode, was to buy a new skirt in Norwich on the way. What else was I to do? So back on went the jeans, coat and shoes over the female underwear. After arriving in Norwich I decided to park in Chapelfields car park and close to the wall so that I could complete my change without being watched. Conscious that time would be tight, I rushed through the car park and walked quickly down St Stephen’s Street to Primark. I decided on that store as clothes were reasonably priced (cheap!) and knew I could rely that their size 12 would fit me. Entering the shop rather breathless, I began my search for the skirt. I found some really nice ones but not many of my size. Oh no! However, after a little hunting around I found a size 12 pencil skirt in a fairly neutral colour which would fit the bill. I took it to the counter and handed over my money – a bargain at only £10. Checking my watch, I dashed back to the car park. As I began running back, my false boobs were bouncing in my bra and I got a bit of a buzz from that. Luckily they were hidden from public view by my loosely fitting coat. I got back to the car park in double quick time and continued with my transition, not forgetting to remove the price tags on the skirt! As it was new, the skirt took a little effort to button up at the rear and this seemed take ages to achieve. Now fully dressed, I dropped down the visor and applied my make up in record time. With that achieved and the wig secured in its rightful place all that remained was to replace the male clothes in the boot. I was ready to go, but I hadn’t validated and paid for my parking. I couldn’t change back again to do this as there wasn’t time. There was nothing for it but to go to the paypoint dressed en femme. I got out of the car and took a deep breath knowing I now had to walk the entire length of the car park. Strangely I felt quite confident of achieving my goal. Nobody appeared to bat an eyelid and thankfully I didn’t bump into anybody at the paypoint. With my ticket validated, I turned to retrace my steps to the car. The car park was getting busier now and I was almost back to the car when a stream of cars came pass me. There I was, in fall view of the drivers and their passengers and I was now getting very impatient to cross to the safety of my car. A small gap appeared in the slow stream of vehicles, but it was not small enough for me to walk across quickly in my newly acquired pencil skirt. However, the driver took pity on me and waved me across and I acknowledged with a wave and walked across in the best girlie walk I could muster.
144
Getting in the car, I breathed a sigh of relief, although I was quietly pleased with what I had achieved. I turned on the engine, drove through the exit and on to the ring road. I eventually gained access to the A47 southern bypass and remembered that the turn on the A47 for Oxburgh Hall was at Swaffham and continued my journey. Thankfully that part of the trip was quite uneventful and I made good progress. So much so, that I arrived at the Swaffham turning some 15 minutes early. With time in hand I wondered what I could do other than sit in the car at Oxburgh for half an hour or more? On a previous visit to the area I had used the Waitrose store on the entrance to the town. I seemed to remember Beccie telling me she had recently been supermarket shopping and how much she enjoyed the thrill of it. I remember envying her at the time and vowed I would do it at some future time. Here was that opportunity and I thought that I could do that too! I drove into the car park and parked reasonably close to the entrance, although not next to any cars. I checked my make-up and thought this is it. Flushed with the success of validating my parking fee in Norwich, I thought I would go for it. It would also be an opportunity for me to practice my walk. Out I got, locked the car and proceeded to the entrance. As I approached the automatic doors opened and I was faced by a young man returning baskets to the entrance. I am sure he read me as I thought I saw him do a double take. Once inside I looked around but I didn’t need any shopping. Apart from that I didn’t have enough time to go through the checkouts either. (That’s my story and I am sticking to it!) So I used up some time by visiting the loo and a good chance to see how well the skirt looked. Upon checking in the mirror it fitted me like a glove (but it was a skirt!) and I was very pleased with look - see picture previous page Having finished with my ablutions, I walked out of the store and across the car park to my car. I am sure I was read on the way by two men who were eyeing up this female. I probably attracted their attention as not many ladies wear skirts that much nowadays. Pleased with my experience, I drove off through Swaffham and on to Oxburgh Hall. Whilst waiting in the car park I applied my second coat of nail varnish. In no time at all I saw Beccie’s car approaching. When parked, Beccie, Sian and Gillian began getting out and it was then I noticed a fourth person sitting in the front passenger side of the car. It was a lovely surprise that Beccie had planned for me. It was May who had been on previous trips with the two of us the previous summer. She looked extremely well and in the rudest of health following her battle with the Big C. Gone was the long blonde hair but she was still the same old May and I was really pleased to see her. After gaining entrance and walking to the Hall we decided the first thing to do was to have lunch. We ordered and then sat in the restaurant awaiting our meal. The staff treated us very well, although we thought we had been confined to a separate room. (One especially for cross dressers we thought!). However, we saw that the main dining room was already full and ours subsequently began filling up too.
145
After lunch it was off to the ‘Ladies’ to check our make-up and powder our noses. Next on the agenda was a tour of the Hall. Last time we were taken around by a guide but this time we had to make our own way round. After viewing one or two rooms, we came across a room with a seat in corner with a window overlooking the moat and Beccie decided it was time for a photo opportunity - Beccie and I posed in front of one of the windows Not content with that, I wanted a photo of myself at the very same place and I asked May if she wouldn’t mind taking it for me. I got ready to pose and May suggested that crossing my legs might make for a better picture.
We continued onwards visiting the various rooms in the Hall and we finally reached the stairs leading up to the roof. It was a little difficult climbing these twisting stairs with my pencil skirt on, but nevertheless I made it to the top and out onto the roof which provided some lovely views of the countryside over the top of the wall. This was the scene of some hilarity on my previous visit last year (my very first real appearance in public) where I my stiletto shoe became stuck in the chicken wiring which covered the wooden flooring. At the time it caused much merriment but I secretly enjoyed the attention too. Again more pictures were taken on the roof with a lovely American lady offering to take some photographs for us. This time no such catastrophe occurred as I did not wear my stilettos this time, although I thought Beccie might fall fowl of the same problem as she was wearing boots with a small heel. No such luck! All too soon the tour drew to a close and, after a visit to the gift shop to acquire some souvenirs; we walked back to the car park for our journey back to Norwich. Beccie hade persuaded Gill and Sian to travel back with me and we enjoyed a chat on our return journey
146
That was not the end of the day out, however, as Beccie had arranged for us to pick up Barbara in Norwich prior to afternoon tea at Caister Old Hall. This was not without its problems either as the Hall had decided they were not providing afternoon tea anymore! Pressure from Beccie and Barbara saved the day as the establishment reluctantly agreed to prepare it for us and very lovely it was too. The sandwiches were very nicely cut and these were consumed, washed down with a cup of tea. Next the cakes and they were lovely too. Also another chance for another photo opportunity with Beccie acting as chief photographer - see left
The day had soon come to an end, so we all adjourned to Barbara’s house before saying goodbye to each other. The trip back home went smoothly and it was lovely to walk back into the house in fem mode under the cover of darkness. All in all a lovely long day out which I enjoyed immensely, including the panic of leaving my skirt behind! Don’t panic Mr Mainwearing!

Hororscope Well here we are the days are getting longer and lighter and all of us are waking up to a bright spring and hopefully warm summer as well (well we need an excuse to get the old one piece out don’t we or for the more risquÊ of us the two piece) So ladies please sit back and enjoy the fruity times a head.
Aries (The Ram) So old friend what do you see envisioned for yourself this warm season? If it is one free of stress then you may want to adjust your view as some stressful times are ahead for you, but do not worry to much because with this will come the silver lining you have been waiting years for. Look to the new person with the bright smile.
Taurus (The Bull) It has been a while since you took a step back form a situation instead of rushing head long into it like the proverbial bull in the china shop, but this coming spring is the time you need to do just that step back and consider before running and butting in where you may not be wanted. You see you will be need very much by a loved one but just to stand by them and be their rock while they do the sorting. 166
Gemini (The Twins) Well I think it is time to wheel out the old saying divided we fall but together we stand, remember this as a relationship of yours will be tested with in the coming weeks and months and it will be up to you alone to stand tall and be the adult when the other person is acting up. Otherwise you could end up losing a lot more than a friendship.
Cancer (The Crab) In your mind you see yourself as a low person always having to eat the scraps of life from the feet of someone above you, well no more as you will soon learn that you have the abilities to walk tall with your head aloft and the knowledge that you have earned your place in life.
Leo (The Lion) So we see you running along with life tickety boo and that all knowing look that says I’m in charge, well don’t count your chickens to soon as things may come crashing down your highness if you don’t remember where you came from.
Virgo (The Virgin) So what is it that you will be doing this summer? It will be something new and bright as it is every year in and year out but why not this time do something that not only benefits you but others who may need the joy in their lives.
167
Libra (The Scales) So weigh up what you have learned so far in your life, what is it you see? Because I don’t think you see what everyone else can see. You see yourself as quite dull or not very interesting when all around you love and adore you, so this summer open your eyes and love what everyone else does abut you.
Scorpio (The Scorpion) So here is the bare bones of the issue, your scared to let anyone see who you really are and you hide behind that sharp stinging tongue of yours. Let your guard down and let someone love you, just because you were hurt in the past does not mean it will happen again.
Sagittarius (The Archer) So how is you bow at the start of the oncoming warm season? I do hope that through the winter months that you didn’t let it break! You see this year will be one full of challenges for you and you will need almost every skill that you have learnt in your life so far. So look to the least likely place for the help and good times.
168
Capricorn (The Sea-Goat) Ah fellow Goats I see that we are all still dragging our feet a little bit and not taking any help that is offered despite the fact some of us are in desperate need of it. You will need to learn soon that to help others and to be strong for them that you in turn will need at times to take help. To find that joy your seeking this year look to one you may have long forgotten.
Aquarius (The Water Carrier) Why does it always seem that you are the one carrying the world’s burdens on your shoulders? Do you not think that it is about time that you put your feet up? You have spent so long now doing everything for everyone else and ignoring your own needs and wants, so this summer relax grab that Mohito on the sun kissed beach from the oh so divine waiter you have dreamt about and go with the flow of nature.
Pisces (The Fishes) Birds of a feather may flock together but you my darling sea friends swim together almost as a hive mind, when a load of Pisces are together you can do and create the most wonderful things and help many. So why not this year start a group. Have some fun and help your community at large or start a dinner group for ladies like us.

We all love to shop, but as we all know , from personal experience, some are… er…friendlier than others. Here’s a few of the better ones, as recommended by you.

“ Hi Mandy, I have a review for you, Wigsrus ltd in Southport. Recently been there for a new style they are great. Hugs Julie Hi Ladies, After asking around for some advice on wigs I plucked up the courage to go and try a new style and I decided to have it fitted. I took the advise of an Angel and looked up www.wigsrusltd.com at Southport. This meant going out en femme for the first time and having a stranger see me as Julie. I made an appointment with Jennie and ventured out into the world as Julie. Jennie is a fantastic understanding lady; she puts you at ease straight away. All appointments are one to one and you can try as many styles on as you like. Jennie will give you advise on styles and colour. After you have chosen your new hair, Jennie will do the final styling and trim if required. The service was excellent and Jennie was wonderful, highly recommended. I felt so good and confident With my new style I had a walk around Southport, then decided to drive over to the Trafford centre and had a walk around the shops not bad for my first day out.” Hugs Julie “ www.frillys.co.uk is a friendly dressing service in Droylsden a town about 4miles from the centre and gay village in Manchester. The owner is called Julie and she now offers self catering accommodation above her shop. HOTELS- I use Travelodge and the special offers of £10 & £26 a night per room are great value. I have never had any problems at these hotels. The only problem I have had at an hotel was at a gay hotel in Torquay where I got a really frosty welcome to say the least. MAKEUP- I don’t use Dermablend because it is expensive and difficult to apply so I use a Boots No17 cover stick or a Rimmel cover stick both are on sale at about £2.50. “ Raquel Hi Mandy! I order make-up from http://www.blushedcosmetics.co.uk/ . They are very reliable and discreet with their deliveries even to Holland. And you know the all in price straight away, no need to email asking for price of postage. And they have a 50p and GBP1.00 corner! Kirsty

“And Now, The end is near….." well, there ya go, what do you think? Sorry its been a lil while coming, and there is still LOADS to do, but i think you’ll agree that its been worth the wait! So, what now? Well, now we just go on making it better and better, and how do we do that I hear you cry! Well, part of the site will unfortunately become subscription, but this is for a number of reasons. Firstly for the upkeep of the site, I work for a supermarket, not Barings bank, so am not by any stretch of the imagination..rich! 199
Secondly it will be for your benefit too. The magazine itself will still be free, but to see past issues you will have to subscribe. But thats not it! For your subscription you will also have access to EXCLUSIVE photo shoots and EXCLUSIVE prize winning competitions that you can enter. I dont think any other TGirl competitons do this regularly, so we will be the first!!! I am also hoping to introduce a shop at some point and thats just the start!! So keep supporting the best lil TG Mag on the planet and watch it grow! Hugs
