“Transformer” is a multifunctional mobile center that can operate as a stage, computer lab, library, exhibition and etc. Traveling through regions of Armenia, it stops in different cities’ public places, offering a unique and free platform for participation into discussions, processes, and education around cultural and socioeconomic topics. After protests against illegal construction in Mashtoc Park, the importance of a platform which could move easily around and raise awareness by bringing up discussions became clear. The main concept was taken from cultural palaces, which existed during Soviet Union times, all over the country. Yerevan, Armenia Year: 2013 Status: Complete

The project came to fruition in collaboration with a local steel structure company and art schools and foundations. The importance of simplicity was evident from the getgo. The stage needed to be assembled by one or two operators of the truck in a short period of time. Also, it needed to be basic enough so it could be serviced and repaired in remote areas. Additionally, the furniture needed to be modular and multifunctional for ease of transport and limited space behind the truck. In order to involve the local communities, design charrettes were organized with one of the local art school’s students who had valuable input on the final results of the project.
