hen Jennifer DuBois was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, she took the traditional approach of fighting the disease with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. A devotee of yoga since 1999, she knew she needed to get back on the mat to help quiet her mind while dealing with the difficult side effects of treatment. Unfortunately, there were no yoga studios near her home in Chester. “I saw a need here and committed Jennifer DuBois myself to building a yoga community in Chester as soon as I recovered,” says DuBois.

Avani Yoga Studio opened its doors in June 2013. Competitive pricing and donation-based classes help make yoga accessible for students of all abilities in this new Chester studio. An important part of that accessibility is DuBois’ passion for women who are fighting breast cancer. International Peace Camp in Virginia Brings the World to Teens

his July, teens from around the world will gather outside Bedford to create a living, working model of the global community.

The Global Youth Village welcomes students, ages 14 to 18, and staff, from over 15 different countries—including Nigeria, China, Taiwan, France, Poland, Jordan, Egypt and the United States. Global Youth Village participants learn about conflict resolution, peaceful leadership, world cultures and faiths and build friendships with diverse peers.

The Global Youth Village emphasizes developing the whole individual. The program provides a wide range of opportunities for youth to explore their own identity—including music, yoga, religious/spiritual exploration, sports and arts. Meals at the Village are fresh-made, vegetarian and reflect the countries and cultures represented at the camp.

Unity + Yoga Program a Great Success

nity of Richmond and Deborah Woodward, Svaroopa yoga teacher, have launched Unity + Yoga, an ongoing program of talks, free sessions, yoga classes, workshops and meditation classes open to the community at large. Svaroopa yoga is a deeply restorative style of yoga that releases core muscles along the spine. Easy, subtle and powerful, it brings great physical benefits. It also allows the student to experience their essential nature of steadfast calm, clarity, ease and joy.

“The principles of Unity and Svaroopa yoga are so similar, we realized this is a way we can support our members, students and the community in deepening their spiritual awareness,” says co-minister Vicki Bunch. “Unity + Yoga is designed to uncover what is within, to realize that everything that you need, and all that you are, is already inside you.”

ichmond-based Farm to Family has recently received a retroactive 501(c)3 nonprofit designation for BusFarm, Inc.

Farm to Family began as a mobile farmers’ market in a converted school Mark Lilly and friends bus in 2009, and it grew to include an indoor Farm Market, several Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm Share programs in Richmond and Washington, D.C., and a work-in-progress urban farm and educational training center. Its mission is to grow, source and distribute fresh foods and encourage a healthy diet of homegrown and hand-made items from the local food shed, contributing to the health of the community, the environment and the economy.

Founder Mark Lilly says, “Together we can make positive changes from within our food system, create local resiliency, educate our youth, create jobs and promote healthier living.

All proceeds from our Farm to Family CSA program and Farm Market will go towards our BusFarm projects, including school visits, urban farming, nutrition education, social programs and more.”

The FarmBus, one of the keystones of the BusFarm operation, has garnered international attention from the design, business and agricultural communities, and has received coverage on BBC World News, CBN News, the Rachael Ray Show and in People magazine. “Everybody wants the FarmBus to visit—it’s an amazing and very effective mobile program for children and adults alike. healthbriefs MERCIÉR PELVIC MASSAGE BOOSTS WOMEN’S FERTILITY

A

new, noninvasive infertility treatment has met with highly favorable results. In a recent study published in the journal Midwifery Today, 40 of 48 women between ages 28 and 42 that underwent two or more sessions of Merciér Therapy achieved pregnancy within the first year; 32 of those used the method alone (no other artificial fertilization/insemination techniques). The four-year study was presented at the 2013 World Congress of Low Back and Pelvic Pain.

The Merciér Method was developed by Jennifer Merciér, a midwife and holistic women’s health practitioner. The regimen includes six hours of pelvic organ massage manipulation, along with a supplement program and continuous monitoring. She explains, “Our protocol is a gentle and noninvasive visceral manipulation of the female reproductive organs that helps to increase general organ mobility and blood flow, which enhances optimal function.” A documentary on the protocol, Fertility: The Shared Journey with Merciér Therapy, premieres this month (MercierMovie.com).

HEALTHY HOMEMADE INFANT FOOD REDUCES KIDS’ ALLERGIES

A

study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology reports that infants that were fed more homemade foods comprising a higher percentage of fruits and vegetables were less likely to develop food allergies.

In assessing youngsters of the same age, researchers from the University of Southampton Medical College, in the UK, followed 41 children that had developed food allergies by the age of 2, alongside 82 non-allergic infants. After tracking the toddlers’ diets with food diaries and conducting allergy testing, the researchers found that infants fed more of the healthier homemade diet had a significantly lower incidence of food allergies as toddlers.

Air Conditioning Cleans Up Indoor Air

A

ir conditioning does more than keep us cool. A study of 300 adults and homes concludes that central air conditioning removes significant levels of volatile organic compounds and pollution particulates from indoor air. The research, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, finds that using air conditioning with windows closed reduced indoor air pollution the most. One caveat, however, is that the research was conducted in Taipei, China—notable for its extreme outdoor pollution.

Another recent study published in Environmental Science confirms the general premise. A research team in Zhejiang, China, found that air conditioning reduced the presence of potent atmospheric pollutants known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAC) by 23 percent. PACs contain compounds that are carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic (damaging to fetuses).

Cycling Gains Ground at Colleges and in Cities May is National Bike Month, and more universities continue to commit to bicycling as a sustainable, healthy and environmentally conscious transportation choice. Recently, Harvard University joined Princeton and Yale as an official Bicycle-Friendly University (BFU), and the League of American Bicyclists designated 14 new BFU members, expanding the program to 58 colleges in 30 states across the U.S. with more to come.

When New York City opened registration for a public bike-sharing program, Citi Bike, more than 5,000 people signed up within 30 hours. Similar demand for more cycling options is happening across the nation where shared bicycle programs are taking root (see Tinyurl.com/Top50BikeFriendliestCities).

The popular Washington, D.C., Capital Bikeshare program began operating in September 2010, and is now the nation’s largest, with 200 locking docks able to accommodate more than 1,800 bright-red bicycles. As in many programs, people can sign up for a short-term stint or an annual membership using either a credit card online or at a station kiosk. Then they can unlock a bicycle and return it to any station within the system. All rides under 30 minutes are free, after which escalating fees kick in, encouraging people to make short trips and to keep more bikes available for other riders.

Activist Turns City Food Waste into Rural Soil Jeremy Brosowsky had an epiphany at a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, greenhouse a few years ago that set him on a more sustainable path: “What if we could take our garbage and grow food in it?” He was in the Midwest to learn about urban agriculture at Growing Power, the pioneering urban farm of McArthur Genius Fellow Will Allen, and was considering starting a rooftop agriculture business. Allen’s emphasis on the importance and elusiveness of fertile soil intrigued him.

“If you don’t dramatically improve the soil, you cannot grow food in cities,” Brosowsky realized. His solution was to create Compost Cab (CompostCab.com), a Washington, D.C.-based service that picks up and delivers urban food waste to local farms for composting. Nearly 100 cities already divert food waste from landfills, but Brosowsky emphasizes, “Composting is not just about waste reduction.

It’s about food production, education, jobs and creating social benefits.” He hopes to roll out Compost Cabs in other cities.

Cheaper Solar Panels Spur Job Growth Solar industry jobs are up nearly 20 percent in the 14 months through November 2013 as cheaper panels and rising electricity rates spurred people to turn to solar, according to a report by the nonprofit Solar Foundation research group.

At latest count, solar companies employ nearly 143,000 solar workers, up more than 23,000 from September 2012—a job growth rate that’s 10 times faster than the national average and is helping local economies, according to the foundation. The industry is expected to create 22,000 new jobs in 2014, although at a slower pace than 2013. Cuts of 8,500 positions are projected in the sector that generates electricity from fossil fuels.

Solar firms surveyed in the report said that more than 50 percent of their business and homeowner customers turned to solar to save money, while nearly 23 percent said they invested in panels because costs are now comparable with utility rates. The report noted that the cost of solar equipment has fallen about 50 percent since the beginning of 2010, motivating more people to go green.

“W

e are building a first-class organization to feed the souls of Richmond,” says Vicki Saunders, president-elect and program chair for Chrysalis Institute, a Richmond learning center that inspires people pursuing personal transformation and spiritual growth beyond the conventional boundaries of any single faith or belief system. The institute encourages the study of insights and practices drawn from all of the world’s spiritual traditions and philosophies, as well as contemporary science.

In October 2013, Chrysalis Group changed its name to Chrysalis Institute, reflecting the organization’s shift from a supportive gathering place for independent spiritual exploration to a bigger resource for learning and building community to encourage spiritual growth.

“As we reevaluated the organization in 2013, we recognized three distinguishing features about Chrysalis,” remarks Saunders. “One, we do not espouse any single belief system; instead, we encourage everyone to define their own spiritual path. Two, we have a real interest in the connection between science and spirituality, from brain research to quantum physics. Three, we have no bias toward any one type of spiritual seeker.”

“People with a spiritual yearning find a home in Chrysalis, as do individuals interested in personal development and finding meaning in their lives,” Saunders explains. “At one point, we kind of thought of ourselves as a fringe group; but now, more than

a third of the people in the U.S. no longer identify with a particular church and a growing number, especially those under the age of 30, consider themselves spiritual but not religious.

We offer programs and a community for these people.”

“Many are involved in a traditional religion; however, they are interested in learning about non-denominational spiritual practices, such as meditation or intuitive painting, that provide experiential techniques to become present and experience a spiritual moment,” notes Priscilla Burbank, the institute’s 20132014 president, in the role since 2010.

Practice groups scheduled on a monthly or weekly basis include journaling, Reiki exchange, Shamanic drum circles and Nia sensory-based movement.

Chrysalis Institute hosts a majority of its events, classes and workshops at the Gathering Space, located at 3527 Ellwood Avenue. For larger events, Chrysalis collaborates with other venues. The institute uses The Clearing, a secluded spiritual retreat center located on 75 wooded acres in Amelia County, for Ember Days, quarterly silent day retreats intended to nurture the soul’s embers with reflection, journaling, walking and reading.

The Labyrinth, a walking meditation space comprised of concentric circles that weave the walker toward the center while facilitating quiet contemplation, is located at the corner of Loxley Road and Westwood Avenue on the grounds of Union Presbyterian Seminary. Open to the public during daylight hours year-round, the Labyrinth is also the site of several Chrysalissponsored walks throughout the year, such as solstice, equinox and World Labyrinth Day.

Semi-annual themes lend structure to the programming at Chrysalis, serving as the foundation for a keynote lecture by a renowned expert and several supporting lectures and workshops by local faculty. The fall 2014 theme, Science and Spirituality: Living with Uncertainty, will bring into focus the work of keynote speaker Dr. S. James Gates, Jr., Ph.D., a theoretical physicist and 2013 recipient of the National Medal of Science.

Other regular programming includes the Spiritual Seeker Series, four monthly midday sessions led by experts in their respective fields. The faculty is also developing a nine-month curriculum called Living the Questions: Spiritual Pathways, a comprehensive overview of the questions explored at the institute.

The Chrysalis Book Club is hosted once a month and movie nights are scheduled once a quarter. The recently launched online Learning Space is a topically themed library of electronic articles, links and learning experiences.

“Our initial fundraising attempts for capacity-building and expansion confirm that we and the outside community are ready for what Chrysalis Institute has to offer and that what we are doing is of good quality,” affirms Saunders. “Things that feed the soul finally have widespread appeal.”

Growing Lavender

L

avender, with its classic scent and appealing bloom color, makes a versatile addition to any garden. However, it does come with its nuances that are best addressed before you plant it.

Lavender loves the sun and will survive cold winters, but is easily defeated by clay soil, erratic seasons, wet soil, mulch and high humidity. Noting these challenges, it is easy to think lavender is too hard to grow. Do not switch to something easier like rosemary or nandina just yet; with some wellplanned preparation, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Lavender thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It also grows well in slightly “sweet,” or alkaline, soil (with a pH of 7.5) in a mounded planting area or row so the water drains away from the crown. Select a variety suited to the growing area, as lavender plants range from 18 inches to 5 feet around upon full maturity, which usually takes three years.

Another vital step is to prune the lavender plant at least once a year, a task that can be quite enjoyable, as the smell is reward enough.

Prune the top one-third of the “green” foliage at the start of September to ready the plant for winter. This will also teach the lavender to branch and bush so it is not as susceptible to splitting. Lavender does not transplant well, so think ahead and save the trouble of having to relocate that gorgeous plant and worry if it will recover.

In addition to its aesthetic qualities, lavender has many wonderful uses. Dried, it can be used in teas, as a natural air freshener, as a moth repellent and to promote relaxation and sleep.

Eppolite shares an example of a time she received a clear image and perceived the bodily sensations of a grieving small child from a female client that a psychotherapist had referred. “When I described what I was sensing, her tears flowed and she also connected to the feeling,” she says. “It provided the needed breakthrough she needed to access her feelings and move forward in therapy.”

Eppolite is keenly aware when roadblocks—busyness, willfulness and a fearful, restless mind—create interference.

“These feed each other and can rarely be separated. I can’t hear or feel my intuition when my energy and attention are willfully directed outward,” she observes.

Abandoning the drive for personal control and surrendering to stillness is how Eppolite signals her body’s intelligence that she’s ready for whispers of guidance. “I sense that surrender as strength and trust that the information received is for my greatest good, even if I don’t fully understand it,” she remarks. “Discernment is necessary because deep wisdom frequently comes in segments that I must piece together and put into action before more of it bubbles up from within.”

It can both direct our lives and make us sensitive to early symptoms suggesting oncoming illness,” she adds.

“There is growing interest in energy medicine and developing a deeper connection to the body’s intelligence through yoga and energy practices like qigong and tai chi because people are tired of taking medications that don’t heal the root cause of health problems,” comments Dr. Sue Morter, founder of Morter Health Center, near Indianapolis, Indiana, and the healing phenomenon she terms Energy Codes. A regular practice of any one of these disciplines expands sensory function to encompass internal recognition and referencing of subtle information.

For her, heeding inner guidance took practice and a commitment to dismantling reactive thought patterns and habits, plus discerning between intuition and distracting chatter.

“Mind chatter generally creates fear, negativity and pressure to do something,” she explains. “Intuitive guidance is gentle, expansive and undemanding.”

Hall believes in the Buddhist concept that mindfulness of the body allows us to love fully. She finds, “It brings healing, wisdom and freedom.”

She relates how she is led to direct a client’s attention to their own body’s intuition, which works best when she is following her instincts, rather than thinking. “After one session, my client, who had been silently experiencing numerous feelings in her stomach, asked me why I had touched her abdomen. I was just intuitively led to that part of her body.”

n 1886, Dr. William Murrell stated in the British Medical Journal, “Massage is of such inestimable value in the treatment of many intractable diseases that it is regretted that so little is known about it in this country, and that it is so rarely employed as a therapeutic agent.”

A 2013 survey by the American Massage Association (AMTA) showed that a majority of us are choosing massage therapy to treat such conditions as stress and pain management, according to Winona Bontrager, the association’s immediate past president. Of 1,007 adults surveyed, 75 percent opted for it within the previous year for stress or medical reasons, and 88 percent view massage as effective for pain relief.

“A growing body of evidence shows that massage therapy can be effective for a variety of health conditions,” reports Bontrager, adding that massage is rapidly becoming recognized as an important part of health and wellness.

New York City, explains, “In the last few years, massage therapy research has been focusing more on the mechanisms by which the potential health benefits may be occurring—looking at the response of the brain, the immune system and the mechanisms of repair inside of muscle cells themselves.”

Relieves Stress

An AMTA survey reported that 32 percent of positive respondents used massage to relieve stress, and numerous recent studies have confirmed this.

Research from Harvard Medical School shows that massage reduces pain and anxiety while increasing sleep and quality of life among metastatic cancer patients. Boston Medical Center researchers saw similar results among 60 cancer patients that underwent port placement surgery; 20-minute massages before and after surgery reduced participants’ stress and anxiety.

Australian researchers reporting in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery found that massage reduced pain, anxiety and muscle

A study from Nashville’s Meharry Medical College of 43 HIV patients revealed that Swedish massage reduced their symptoms of depression. Lead researcher Russell Poland, Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, observes, “When we designed the study, we didn’t expect to see such a large effect of massage. We remain surprised.”

The benefit was echoed by a University of California-Los Angeles study of 95 volunteers that displayed increases in their production of oxytocin hormone simultaneous with reductions in adrenocorticotropin hormone. Oxytocin is linked to compassion, empathy, maternal affection and social connection, while lowered adrenocorticotropin effects less stress.

Relieves Pain

Researchers in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Brazil’s University of Sao Paulo studied 46 birthing women and determined that lumbar massage during labor reduced pain by 27 percent. In another study at Beijing’s Chinese PLA General Hospital, deep massage brought relief to 64 patients suffering from chronic low back pain.

Relief was reported by a third of 110 headache patients in a Turkish medical school study. Dhaka Medical College Hospital, in Bangladesh, found similar results in a study of 500 headache sufferers, many of which had migraines. Research from the University of Miami’s School of Medicine showed that massage reduced arthritis pain and increased both grip strength and range of motion among 42 rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Lead researcher Tiffany Field, Ph.D., director of Miami University’s Touch Research Institute, says, “We have known that massage therapy reduces substance P, [a neuropeptide] which causes pain, and that it increases serotonin, the body’s natural pain killer.

We also know that deep sleep is critical to lowering substance P, increasing serotonin and reducing pain.”

Expands Acceptance

Lucy Liben, dean of massage therapy at the Swedish Institute, affirms the recent research as evidence documenting the numerous health benefits of massage therapy. “More and more consumers are seeking massage therapy for help with a variety of medical issues and conditions. Doctors are increasingly referring patients for such treatment and hospitals are enlisting more therapists to provide care for patients,” says Liben.

“Perhaps most importantly,” she adds, “research is offering us guidance in our work as massage therapists in how to provide the most effective care for chronic pain or musculoskeletal problems, during cancer treatment, during the changes of pregnancy or for any number of other health-related issues.”

Contraceptive Pill Chill Dangers Include Cancer, Strokes and Fatigue

or more than 50 years, women have appreciated the freedom that birth control pills offer. They simply take a little pill every day and rest easy, fairly assured that an unplanned pregnancy won’t occur. However, there’s actually a lot not to love about “The Pill”, especially its long-term side effects.

“The sexual freedom that women have fought so hard to obtain has been won at a terrible price,” advises Naturopathic Doctor Sherrill Sellman, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, author of The Hormone Heresy: What Women Must Know about Their Hormones.

That price includes blood clots and even death from heart attacks and strokes in young women. As early as 1963, an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association linked The Pill to venous thrombosis, or blood clots. By 1968, at least one cancer journal, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, had linked cancer to the use of the steroid hormones contained in oral contraceptives. In 1973, Scandinavian researchers warned of the link between oral contraceptives and strokes.

“In December 2002, the U.S. government published its biannual Report on Carcinogens that added all steroidal estrogens to the list of known human carcinogens,” says Sellman, “The gravity of this finding cannot be overstated: All estrogens used in HRT [hormone

replacement therapy] and oral contraceptives have now been proven unequivocally to cause cancer.”

Yet, regardless of the many downsides, The Pill remains the most common method of birth control worldwide, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with usage by 16 percent of married American women.

However, he adds, women taking The Pill even as long as 10 years may not notice any obvious health problems. “Maybe she’ll first notice a lack of energy, but doesn’t connect the dots and realize that magnesium, B12 and numerous other nutrients involved in energy production are depleted,” he explains.

The nutrient-depleting effects of The Pill were recognized as early as 1975 in a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, but it carried no recommendations for replacing them. Some of these nutrients are essential for the production of brain chemicals, called neurotransmitters, including mood-elevating dopamine. nutrient loss, advises Pelton. Replacing nutrients should, in the long term, neutralize the negative effects of The Pill, even cancer and blood clots, he assures. Better yet, say Sellman and Pelton, stop taking The Pill and switch to safer forms of contraception. It may take months or even years for the nutrient imbalances to be fully corrected, so start now.

Natural Contraceptives

Although no natural forms of estrogen are suited for birth control, safe and effective natural forms exist, advises women’s health expert Holly Lucille, a naturopathic doctor and registered nurse in West Hollywood, California. She cautions against the potential risks of using estrogen patches, shots and vaginal rings, and recommends avoiding anything that contains estrogen. “Not using The Pill doesn’t mean you have to rely on withdrawal or the rhythm method, both of which are notoriously unreliable,” says Lucille, preferring what she terms “barrier methods”, like diaphragms, cervical caps and male and female condoms.

She notes, “Cervical caps are just as effective as The Pill and you can put them in and leave them a little longer for a bit more spontaneity.” Female condoms are even more convenient, she explains: “They fit much like a diaphragm and they can be left in place as long as eight hours.” Instead of potentially toxic spermicides, Lucille recommends using lemon juice, which, she says, is equally effective.

Pain-Free Pooch Five Natural Therapies that Work

Because dogs won’t always let us know when they’re hurting, some people assume they don’t experience pain the same way we do, but that’s not the case. Instincts retained from their wild heritage will generally prompt them to hide pain as it’s a sign of weakness.

T

he truth is that arthritis and muscle or joint injuries are just as uncomfortable for dogs as they are for us, and many canine illnesses generate significant pain. While conventional medications can ease discomfort, they’re not the only or even the best options in many cases.

Alternative therapies can be helpful in managing and relieving pain and work best as part of a whole body wellness program designed for a dog’s individual needs. To that end, always consult with an integrative veterinarian before starting any new treatment. Together, practitioner and owner will note that some of the following modalities may be contraindicated in some situations—for example, massage should never be performed on or near a tumor.

Canine Massage: Dogs love massage because they crave being touched.

Physical contact from another being provides a calming effect and brings comfort. Skin, the largest sense organ in the body, is loaded with sensory receptors and nerve endings that register touch, temperature and pain, and send information to the brain. Massage
