HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET

D

ear Readers,

Jessica Coffey, Publisher

And just like that, another school year is coming to a close. That may not be the first thing on many of your minds, but I think it’s really starting to hit me now that my baby boy is finishing up his junior year of high school and we’ll just have one more year with him living at home full time. The term “emptynester” is not one I’m quite ready for! But, come it will, so I will savor our time together and relish the milestones. Change always likes to bear its little ol’ head, doesn’t it?! Luckily, I enjoy it and have learned the “new normal” sets in pretty quickly.

We’re in a season of change right now, as we move from spring into summer—all around us, nature is bursting forth with more buds, blooms, blossoms, fruits and vegetables. It’s a time of fertility, birth and renewal, and this issue celebrates the season with a special Women’s Wellness section—take a look at the local providers offering services that support women’s health at every age and stage, from birth through menopause. I feel lucky to be part of a local women’s circle that helps me grow and evolve as a mother, daughter, wife and friend. I feel supported and uplifted through our sharing, discovery and mutual respect. I think it’s so helpful to find groups where you feel heard and understood. Opportunities for connection, learning and growth abound in the calendar listings in the back of the magazine—I hope you find something meaningful to get involved with during this season of change. I’m also part of an online group started by local transformational coach and spiritual midwife, Joni Advent Maher, called the Sacred Feminine Sisterhood. Back in 2016, a group of us co-created a beautiful poem that I’d like to share with you:

She stopped in her tracks when she realized The beautiful bouquet of colors was meant for her She was bursting with desire and anticipation at the unlimited possibilities that lay ahead! And then she kicked up her heels and danced to the music of her heart expression of the suppression… Dancing with colors Illuminating Her Light I wish a Happy Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to all of the parents reading this issue.

est End Rolfing, a new business located at 10617 Patterson Avenue, offers therapy for the musculoskeletal system to release and rebalance fascia, tendons, ligaments, joints and bones. Being free from tension and habitual postures reduces chronic pain, heals injuries and renews the body’s grace and efficiency of movement. Slash Coleman

Feeling Fit With Laughter Yoga

L

aughter Yoga has a new home in Richmond at 213 Roseneath Road, Suite 102, thanks to a collaboration between Nora Vimala Pozzi, owner/director of the Integral Yoga Center of Richmond and Slash Coleman, Certified Laughter Yoga Leader. Based on the belief that voluntary laughter provides the same physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter, Coleman guides participants into prolonged voluntary laughter in one to ten minute intervals. Each 60-minute class utilizes yogic breathing, laughter exercises, eye contact and childlike playfulness. Classes are “pay-what-you-can” and run every Friday (except when they’re on Sunday). No prior yoga experience is necessary. Laughter Yoga was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria as a way to promote the use of laughter as a form of physical exercise. For more information and specific dates, call 804-353-3799 or visit YogaHelps.com. See listing, page 45.

Tibetan Monks Return to Richmond

T

ibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in the south of India will once again be visiting the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond, from May 8 through 13. The opening ceremony will take place at 7 p.m., May 8, and meditation instruction will be held each day at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Wednesday through Friday. A Puja Healing Ceremony will take place at 7 p.m., May 9, and a family-friendly Snow Leopard Pageant will be held at 7 p.m., May 10. The week will conclude with a closing ceremony at 10 a.m., May 12. Putting Mantras Front and Center

R

ichmond-based MantraDog has launched a new ecommerce platform to bring ecofriendly, sustainably sourced, non-toxic, personalized yoga mats to practitioners throughout the U.S. Co-founder Avi Gunzburg was inspired four years ago when he took up yoga to relax. “Yoga allowed me to center myself and realize what was important in life,” he says. However, “Everything about my practice centered me and took me deeper, except for my mat; it was the same mat as everyone else’s.” Gunzburg found the perfect solution—a premium yoga mat with a natural rubber base and cork top that he could personalize with a mantra. Natural rubber is sustainably harvested from the sap of trees and natural cork is the bark from a tree that can be continuously harvested over 25 years. The rubber base on the bottom provides superior staying power on the floor and the cork on top provides excellent non-slip traction—even in hot yoga (natural cork gets grippier the wetter it is). MantraDog lasers a mantra onto each mat, creating the personalized MantraMat. Lisa Rogerson, Gunzburg’s sister and long-time yoga practitioner, says, “Working together to help others find the power of yoga and using a mantra is such meaningful work.” MantraDog also sells an all-natural yoga mat cleaner, Mantratology, as well as yoga gear and mantra bracelets.

aurel Herman, the “blissed-out chef ”, is also the “culinary medicine chef ”. Over the past several years, Herman has written and taught about the connection of food to the human spirit. She has partnered with area physicians, Good Foods Grocery and Mise En Place Cooking School to offer hands-on classes that address multiple dietary protocols and empower patients in their own healing journey. After the class in the kitchen, a communal meal is served. Over the years, people have come into the café at Good Foods, where Herman works, with lists of foods they can and cannot eat, but no direction as how to implement their protocols, and many feel inadequate in their kitchen skills. Adiva Naturals Opens in Shockoe Bottom

A

diva Naturals, a local manufacturer of luxury hair and skincare products, has moved into Shockoe Bottom with a new showroom and manufacturing facility at 1802 East Franklin Street. Sourcing natural organic ingredients, this farm-to-table hair and skincare product manufacturer uses the highest-quality ingredients to provide customers with a total wellness experience. New York native and Richmond entrepreneur, Nadira Chase gave birth to Adiva Naturals in 2002, from the kitchen of her former restaurant, Tropical Soul. There she would prepare heaping batches of her Ginger & Sugar Body Polish and her popular leavein hair and skin conditioner for restaurant clients as a hobby. “After years of battling psoriasis, I began to see significant improvements after making and using my first batch of natural skincare products. I began to share these products with my friends and family as gifts initially. They quickly became customers and assisted in growing my and establishing my initial client base. My Nourishing Kitchen Offers Plant-Based Meal Prep Workshops

K

aren Rountree has opened My Nourishing Kitchen a healthy, plant-based, meal prep business in the Ashland area. She knew the best way for her family to be healthy was to prepare healthy meals in her own kitchen, but dreaded grocery shopping, and figuring out healthy recipes took too much time. Most existing meal prep services didn’t offer the healthiest meals, were not allergen-friendly and were too pricey for her budget. As a result, Rountree became a Thrive4Mom meal prep coach and says, “My Nourishing Kitchen wants to make convenience healthy and family meal time nutritious, attainable and affordable. Our goal is to provide nourishing food that will nourish your family and your life. The meals in My Nourishing Kitchen will never contain processed chemicals or ingredients you can’t pronounce. They are always gluten-free, dairy-free, peanut-free, corn-free and egg-free, and while they are plant-based, you don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy them.” Cost per workshop is $159, which includes the groceries. ONE Wellness Helps Richmonders Connect to Their Authentic Selves by Megan Wilson

A

thletes may refer to it as “being in the zone”. A writer may call it “flow”. In any professional or personal situation, this state of connecting passion to action will inspire a sense of peace and focus. This, says Elizabeth Krusen, owner of ONE Wellness, is what she defines as a person’s “authentic self ”, and she hopes to help Richmond residents discover their own authentic selves. “On the one hand, it means being able to calm your mind,” she advises. “The next step on the journey is being able to tune into your passion.” Krusen’s staff includes 20 instructors and practitioners. From a massage therapist with a Ph.D. to certified yoga instructors, there’s an expert for every mode of meditation. The New York transplant says she’s excited to be a part of the Richmond wellness community. “There’s a synergy we can create,” she says. “We can hopefully come together to create a mindful movement. Mindfulness is about heartfulness. We quiet our minds first and we cultivate our hearts. It’s about compassion for ourselves and for others. I think Richmond is ready.” Krusen opened ONE Wellness during the fall of 2017. It all started with her own personal journey. “I struggled from a young age with anxiety and addiction,” she explains. “I had unhealthy ways of coping with stress, as do a lot of people. I wasn’t able to find peace until I was able to find meditation.” 16

We’ll help each person identify what they want to focus on, set those intentions and realize those intentions. When Krusen decided to quit drinking, she signed up for a silent meditation retreat. “That’s all it took,” she says, launching her own self-immersion program to explore and learn all the tools available. She enrolled in courses to advance her knowledge, connected with mentors across a variety of disciplines, and then decided it was time to share her knowledge.

NARichmond.com

“I started with my family,” Krusen says. “The whole process became a reflection on motherhood; the changing dynamics of marriage, the different roles you play as a mother, and how to discover and stay connected to your authentic self.” Krusen’s children are now 5, 8 and 11. Even her 5-year old meditates each night. ONE Wellness offers many pathways to a more mindful life, including yoga, qigong and meditation workshops, all with kid-friendly options. “If I’d had these tools when I was young, I wouldn’t have struggled with stress and anxiety as much as I have,” Krusen says. “Mindfulness also helps us cultivate the skills for healthy coping, moral leadership, honesty, compassion, generosity—most of the qualities we want to see in our kids.” At ONE Wellness, Krusen’s goal is to bring many different entry points to a mindful life under one roof. Each offering helps a person better connect their body, mind and spirit. “Some areas are stronger than others for some people,” she says. To help clients decide where to start, Krusen offers free consultations. “We’ll help each person identify what they want to focus on, set those intentions and realize those intentions,” notes Krusen. ONE Wellness hosts an open house on the first Saturday of each month where guests can explore free classes and membership options, in addition to complimentary classes each week. KID TALK How to Communicate with a Child D

by Amber Lanier Nagle

udley Evenson didn’t set out to devise a strategy to foster constructive, nurturing communications between parents and their offspring. Yet as she and her husband, Dean, raised their three children decades ago, timeless guiding principles emerged. “We were like other parents—learning and growing along with our children,” says Evenson, a certified professional life coach, musician and co-founder of the instrumental recording label Soundings of the Planet (Soundings.com), in Bellingham, Washington. “Then, in the early 1980s, I met Joshua Halpern, who wanted to include our perspectives and techniques in his book, Children of the Dawn: Visions of the New Family.” So she shared her way of cultivating kind, caring and empathetic youngsters that has worked for two generations of her family: “Our role is not to impose our beliefs on children and grandchildren, but to guide and help them develop their dreams, visions, paths and passions.” Other experts agree.

NARichmond.com

Stay Clear. Evenson contends that

children are often mirrors of the surrounding moods and attitudes, so our example is paramount. “Children absorb our feelings and emotions,” says Melanie Hogin, a social worker who counsels foster families in greater Nashville.“‘Transference’ is its textbook term. Stay calm and clear when you are around children, and keep the lines of communication open.”

Be Consistent. Evenson maintains,

“Mom and Dad or the primary parental figures should try to establish a unified, mutually supportive program.” “Consistency is one of the cornerstones of effective parenting,” says Dana Cooley-Keith, with 20 years of experience working with families in crisis in Northwest Georgia. “Even if it’s hard, it’s particularly important for divorced parents to be consistent and on the same page. Otherwise, it creates stress for the entire family, adding more confusion to a child’s life when the noncustodial parent allows something the custodial parent doesn’t.”

Be positive, honest, flexible, reasonable and understanding. “It is

key to explain things to children and to listen to them,” says Evenson’s daughter, Cristen Olsen, of Seattle, who raised her daughter using her family’s guiding principles, and now uses them as a nanny. “It helps them learn how to process situations and find their own resolutions to difficult problems.” Olsen says she becomes a mediator when the siblings she cares for don’t agree. “We solve the problem together by hearing all sides, talking through the issues and reaching for understanding. Many times, the kids come up with their own solutions.”

Provide meaningful boundaries and restrictions. Kids typically push

to find their limits. “Establish limits and boundaries when children are young,” says Cooley-Keith. “They will be more accepting of rules if you establish them earlier, rather than later. Most often, boundaries provide security for kids.”

Accept their point of view. Evenson

always encouraged her children to voice their opinions. “This is a great point,” says Hogin. “For children to learn to have opinions and speak out, we must value what they say. We don’t have to agree with everything they say, but should listen and encourage them to find their voice and use their words.”

Trust children. “Believe in them,” affirms Evenson. “Be on their side. Let them feel your support and love.” Don’t nag. “We all want children to develop their own sense of responsibility,” Olsen says. “I find making strong eye contact reinforces my words, so I don’t have to nag or repeat myself often.” Be available, rather than putting kids on the spot in public. “If you

correct or redirect a child in front of others, they will probably be focused on being

embarrassed and fail to understand the lesson or reasoning a parent is trying to project,” says Hogin. “Taking a step back and working out an issue one-on-one is usually more appropriate and effective.”

Maintain good habits. Evenson emphasizes the character strength that comes from observing and practicing good habits and healthy lifestyles that avoids gossip and incorporates creative exploration of life. This includes “Doing everything in love,” she notes. Such all-encompassing love balances love for our own children with love for all children and respect for all life. Be patient with yourself. “No one is perfect,” Evenson remarks. “Just do your best. Guide, console and discipline while keeping a sense of humor.” Connect with the freelance writer at AmberNagle.com.

Feeling Our Way to Healthy Communication

F

or so long, too many of us have resisted using words that disclose our feelings. There are many reasons why—the greatest often being the fear of offending someone. Perhaps we are under the impression that what we say will negatively influence the listener. However, displaying one’s feelings can often pave the way for authentic conversation to occur; conversation that will lead to improved communication and better relationships. When we take the risk and share our feelings, it is important that we assure the listener that he or she is not the cause of the feelings. This is because the way we feel is an interpretation of our own experiences or reactions to people, places or events. Too often, feelings are used to blame or position ourselves above others

by Jo Standing

which creates a lose-lose scenario. The healthy sharing of feelings should create connection. If we’re sharing feelings for any other reason, we are creating unnecessary drama in our lives, homes and school/ workplaces. If we lived, worked and schooled in environments where we were encouraged to be more forthright about where we

stand emotionally, we could dramatically improve our communication and relationship skills. Many schools make little room for the unfiltered emotional self to express itself which can cause long-term negative effects as well as toxic environments. Given more opportunities to learn and integrate emotional intelligence, we could become better skilled at expressing ourselves emotionally and better equipped at understanding the emotional needs of others. HEALING THE HARD STUFF Natural Approaches Resolve Major Illnesses by Linda Sechrist

A

lthough natural health enthusiasts may recognize alternative healing modalities as a preferred approach to treatment, in the face of major health issues, even they tend to join the crowd that’s turning first to conventional medicine. Thus, many gentler modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, co-authored by doctors of naturopathy Michael T. Murray and Joseph Pizzorno, remain largely untapped resources. Ignored because they are unsupported by traditional sciencebased medicine, holistic measures such as acupuncture, energy medicine, essential oils, herbs, detoxification, health-promoting diets, homeopathy, prayer and meditation, supplementation, yoga, massage and naturopathy are sacrificed in favor of often painful medical procedures and prescription drugs which can’t claim to permanently cure anything and can have many harmful side effects. 20

Greater Richmond Edition

Lack of Awareness

“A patient that dabbles in holistic medicine for minor health issues such as indigestion, headache or insomnia often turns to conventional methods after receiving a serious diagnosis such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer because they are scared,” observes holistic physician Dr. Wendy Warner, medical director of Medicine in Balance, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The co-author of Boosting Your Immunity for Dummies suggests that relatively few people turn to natural solutions for both preventive and therapeutic measures because they’re unaware they exist. Integrative oncologists and endocrinologists that are aware of the benefits of natural complementary methods are scarce. Relatively few conventional doctors are educated in functional medicine. “Yet complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage and some essential oils can support the immune system and help an individual deal with stress experienced from coping with their illness,” says Warner.

NARichmond.com

Rob Wergin, an experienced energy medicine practitioner, speaks from experience regarding clients that consult him for lifethreatening diagnoses. “When I see them, they’re desperate and have exhausted all conventional methods. I’m their lastditch effort,” remarks Wergin. The most frequent reason he hears is, “My family, friends and doctor told me not to waste my money on charlatans.” “People find it challenging to put faith in natural methods and are nervous about going against a doctor’s advice until they feel or see positive results; even these may not provide sufficient motivation to continue with alternative treatments,” he says. “I believe this is the result of the influence of pharmaceutical ads promising results, the medical community’s belief in proof solely through clinical trials, websites like Quackwatch. com and well-meaning friends insisting that the conventional route is the only way to go. It’s sad to see the gravity of these influences pulling clients back into solely believing in the Western model of medicine,” says Wergin. Ann Lee, a doctor of naturopathy, acupuncturist and founder of the Health for Life Clinic, Inc., in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, notes, “This mindset continues to get reinforced by insurance companies that do not cover alternatives. Paying out of pocket for medical expenses also influences a patient’s choices.” Kelly Noonan-Gores and Adam Schomer, director and producer, respectively, of the documentary film HEAL, suggest that unconscious conditioning plays the biggest role in an individual’s choices. “We are deeply conditioned to view medical specialists and prestigious medical institutions as the ones with all the answers. Sometimes they do and sometimes they

don’t,” says Noonan-Gores, who intends to have her film awaken viewers to the possibilities of alternative paths of healing. As just one other example noted in the film, thousands have used the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), tapping on their body to help release the trauma and stress often associated with illness.

“Before, I wasn’t familiar with EFT, which I continue to use and benefit from. However, despite everything I’ve learned, I can’t give up on all Western medicine, put my faith in alternatives and let my intuition and faith guide me to healing. It’s easier to be skeptical than to have faith,” Lee says.

website FloridaOilsRN.com that reaches hundreds of individuals worldwide. She advises, “Reach out to people that you see are having positive results with a different healing system than yours. Ask them to show, help and teach you. I’ve seen many people restored to health by using methods that science is only beginning to understand.”

Resistance to Change

Quiet Role Models

Sheila Tucker, a resident of Navarre, Florida, has been a registered nurse for 20 years, practicing in hospital settings such as critical care, emergency and administration. “I know and understand doctors, surgeries and pharmaceutical treatments and hospitals,” says Tucker, who recalls that throughout her life she was taught to believe in a system that suddenly stopped working for her. “In 2014, I was dying from a rare autoimmune condition, requiring fulltime care, and planning my funeral. Doctors had tried everything, yet my health continued to decline. When I saw a friend’s Facebook posts about her use of essential oils, I was curious, but reluctant to reach out, and didn’t want anyone to know that I called her for advice,” recalls Tucker. “Shortly after my friend arrived with her oils, my husband came home with our daughter, who had strep throat and a fever. She made us promise to use selected oils through the night and prayed with us.” Tucker attributes the miracle of her daughter’s turnaround the next morning to shifting her paradigm and opening her up to believing in the healing power of essential oils. Thanks to her friend and role model, Tucker learned how to use therapeuticgrade oils, supplements and a healthy diet to cleanse her body of the heavy toxic load accumulated from several years of expensive drug treatments. Today, she is a healthy and enthusiastic advocate, and her personal results opened the eyes of her physician to the point where she also shifted her own philosophy of healing. Tucker now offers educational classes in her office and online through her

“Outside of any dominant paradigm, it’s easier to cast suspicion than to make curious inquiry and, over time, working within a dominant worldview creates polarity, the antithesis of ‘wholism’. An inclusive approach integrates all medical and complementary approaches, as well as interaction with the natural world,” says Patrick Hanaway, a family physician and founder of Family to Family Medicine, in Asheville, North Carolina. Hanaway, the former director of medical education for the Institute for Functional Medicine and the first medical director at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, explains, “Doctors have a rigorous job filled with responsibility. Change is difficult and investigating vastly different ways of practicing medicine requires a degree of curiosity and openness. I am heartened by thought leaders and heads of top medical schools who are presently opening up to functional medicine, natural medicine and complementary approaches.” “The paradigm shift we are ushering in has been 50 years in the making,” assesses Hanaway. “Some medical professionals are immersed in a polar view of right and wrong, offering personal attacks and disparaging comments to maintain control of the dialogue. This is not appreciated by patients who look to the doctor as a teacher—the Latin docere means to teach. “The movement to change medicine and the cultural paradigm of healing is a marathon, not a sprint, and those of us involved are prepared to stay the course.”

“The conventional medical community wants to maintain the model in which they have heavily invested centuries of time, energy and money. Patients that investigate integrative and complementary medicine may resist hearing that in order to get well, they might need to change their worldview and lifestyle, take a leave of absence from their job, develop a spiritual practice, exercise or maybe even leave a toxic relationship,” says Schomer. “Conventional medicine says take this pill and keep living your life the same way,” says Schomer. “We are not demonizing doctors, pharmaceuticals or the medical system. We simply believe that individuals are more empowered to heal when they take control of their health.” Eva Lee, a resident of Los Angeles featured in the documentary, suffers from a rare and unpredictable form of blistering skin inflammation. “I’ve tested negative for faulty genes and all sorts of rare viruses and bacteria, which helped point me towards holistic methods. So far, following the directives of Dr. Mark Emerson, a chiropractor specializing in nutrition, in Maui, Hawaii, who I met while filming, has helped my body become healthier and deal with inflammation levels that rapidly reduced as soon as I detoxed and eliminated meat and dairy from my diet,” says Lee. Still, it’s hard for her to accept that her condition could be due to the type of stress and suppressed emotions that Anthony William explores in his book Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal.

Seed Cycling to Balance Hormones by Lindsey Wells

S

eed cycling is a gentle but effective tool to balance hormones with the use of different seeds during the phases of a woman’s menstrual cycle. This dietary intervention is for women of all ages and all reproductive stages of life, including pre-menopause and post-menopause. The benefits of seed cycling can help to regulate the menstrual cycle for those with irregular periods. It can also decrease PMS symptoms, such as acne, menstrual cramps, tender breasts, sleep disturbances, headaches, mood swings, heavy bleeding and more. In addition, seed cycling has been shown clinically to help with infertility. This dietary intervention is a great example of how food is medicine. The menstrual cycle is regulated by two main hormones: estrogen and progesterone.

Both act as chemical messengers giving directions to the female reproductive organs on how they should behave. As a result, these hormones are responsible for the changes that female bodies go through on a monthly basis; a female body’s hormonal composition will change throughout the month in order to prepare the body for pregnancy. Estrogen is the main hormone during the first half of the menstrual cycle. It is responsible for regenerating the uterine lining after menstruation; it will spike half-way through the menstrual cycle (around Day 15), triggering the release of an egg, which is known as ovulation. After ovulation, estrogen levels decrease. As estrogen levels decrease, progesterone levels increase to become the dominant hormone during the second half of the

menstrual cycle. Progesterone is responsible for preparing the uterus to provide the perfect environment to implant and nourish a fertilized egg. As a result, progesterone is needed to sustain a healthy pregnancy. It is important that both estrogen and progesterone are balanced during their correct phases of the menstrual cycle. Hormonal imbalance can lead to infertility, miscarriages, irregular menstrual cycles, low libido and more. Luckily, a woman can implement seed cycling into her daily routine as a powerful way to modify and balance hormones. The most effective results are seen after three months of seed cycling.

How to Seed Cycle From Day 1 (first day of bleeding) to Day 15, it is advised that a woman consume two tablespoons of ground flax seeds and/ or ground pumpkin seeds daily. Both of these seeds increase estrogen levels. Flax seeds and pumpkin seeds contain polyphenols known as lignans. Lignans are able to be converted by the bacteria found in our gastrointestinal tract into compounds with active estrogenic properties. Therefore, the consumption of these seeds can increase estrogen activity in the body to help regulate estrogen levels during the first half of the menstrual cycle. In addition, these seeds are sources of essential fatty acids that increase antispasmatic/relaxing prostaglandins, which can be used for pain management associated with menstrual cramps. Studies have shown that dietary consumption of flaxseeds can improve menopausal symptoms, insulin resistance, glucose levels, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease; it can also help prevent hormone-associated cancers. Pumpkin seeds are also a good

source of dietary zinc, which is helpful for proper immune system functioning. From Day 16 until Day 1 (first day of bleeding), it is recommended that a woman consume two tablespoons of ground sunflower seeds and/or ground sesame seeds. Both of these seeds support this half of the menstrual cycle by providing omega 6 essential fatty acids to support progesterone production. In addition, these seeds are a source of protein. Studies have shown that higher protein and lower carbohydrate intake is associated with higher progesterone levels. Implementing a seed cycling schedule based on the lunar phases of the moon is an option for women who do not have monthly menstrual cycles as a way to regulate their cycles. Menstrual cycles following the lunar phases are based on a 28-day cycle: menstruating (Day 1) on the new moon and ovulating (Day 14) on the full moon. Please note that it is best to grind the seeds on a daily basis instead of purchasing them pre-ground. Pre-ground seeds are subject to oxidization, which can diminish their potency. A coffee grinder is a useful appliance for grinding seeds. Also, the consumption of the seeds can be spread out throughout the day by sprinkling them in smoothies, yogurt, salads, toast and sandwiches.

MENOPAUSE Exercising Reduces Symptoms by Marlaina Donato

T

ransitioning through menopause and the years of perimenopausal hormone fluctuation leading up to the finale can be physically and emotionally challenging for many women. Consistently following a healthy diet and positive lifestyle are important, and health researchers, doctors and midlife women can attest to the multidimensional benefits of exercise. Perks may include reduction of menopausal discomfort, better brain function, stronger bones and reversal of estrogen dominance syndrome that can set the stage for fibroids, cystic breasts, cancer, migraines and weight gain.

Get Moving

Studies of 3,500 women in South and Central America have shown that a more active life reduces hot flashes and night sweats. The results, published in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society, reveal that sedentary individuals often experience increased intensity of related symptoms like insomnia and irritability. Aerobic exercise such as regular walking, hiking, swimming or biking might also help the brain produce neurochemicals that are compromised when estrogen levels drop. Sue Markovitch, author and owner of Clear Rock Fitness, in Columbus, Ohio, recommends aerobic exercise. “I believe our bodies were made to move. One of the amazing gifts of fitness is it’s truly never too late. When we incorporate daily movement in our lives, all the other systems in the body will work more according to plan. Simply taking a daily walk helps balance brain chemistry,” says Markovitch, who specializes in improving fitness levels for women over 40. “Walking is fitness magic, whether it’s on a treadmill, outside or in the pool. Get your heart rate into an aerobic zone, preferably for 30 to 45 minutes. I’ve heard testimony 26

after testimony of improved sleep, less back or joint pain and better mood.” She also suggests adding a few weekly sessions of resistance training to daily walks. Most health professionals agree that balance is the key. Jeanne D. Andrus, a menopause expert and author of I Just Want to Be ME Again, in Covington, Louisiana, recommends cardio, resistance training and exercise that increases flexibility and core strength. “For a beginner, this may include two to four days of walking, one to three days of strength training and one to three days of yoga or Pilates, with the goal being three and a half hours of activity per week.” Of course, all of these need to be at appropriate levels for the woman’s condition and goals,” advises Andrus. According to studies led by Helen Jones, Ph.D., from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, three, 30-to-45-minute aerobic sessions a week reduced hot flashes and yielded the most significant results.

Go Easy

While some conventional approaches suggest vigorous exercise, many holistic professionals caution against extremes. “It’s important to individualize, and in my ongoing research it’s clear that the high-intensity strength and sculpting approach so often promoted and perceived as necessary to maintain shape, weight and health is a myth,” says Dr. Eden Fromberg, an obstetrician, gynecologist and founder of Holistic Gynecology New York, in Manhattan. Instead, Fromberg recommends an integrated approach to exercise that supports connective tissue and joints. While some forms of exercise including yoga are perceived as gentler than others, she warns against an all-or-nothing strategy, noting, “Intense, deep stretching and joint-straining may cause injury more easily during hormonal transition.” Andrus concurs, “If high cortisol levels are involved and accompanied by insomnia, stress placed on the body by rigorous exercise will increase these levels and actually lower available energy.” She also advises adopting a non-aggressive approach for osteoporosis. “Weight-bearing exercise is a must, but if bone loss is already present, start much more gradually to ensure that bones are protected.”

Lighten Up

Exercise can be more enjoyable than doing chores. Recreational activities such as dancing, biking or hopping on the swings at the playground are fun ways to do something good for both body and spirit. Menopause can be a time for personal expansion and an invitation for self-care that might have been neglected or postponed. Fromberg believes we can all revitalize our resources at any stage of life, and the years surrounding menopause call for us to tune into ourselves even more. “What seems like a disruption is an opportunity to listen deeply and reimagine and reorganize one’s life on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. by Judith Fertig

hree years ago, the New York Times added a new word to the world’s food vocabulary: Climatarian (n.) A diet whose primary goal is to reverse climate change. This includes eating locally produced food (to reduce energy spent in transportation), choosing pork and poultry instead of beef and lamb (to limit gas emissions), and using every part of ingredients (apple cores, cheese rinds, etc.) to limit food waste. Changing our food choices to support this model can have a ripple effect. Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in a 2017 study published in the journal Climatic Change, looked at how diets impact personal health, the healthcare system and climate. They found that adopting a more plant-based diet reduces the relative risk of coronary heart disease, colorectal cancer and Type 2 diabetes by 20 to 40 percent. National annual health care costs could drop from $93 billion to $77 billion. Direct greenhouse gas emissions could annually drop 489 to 1,821 pounds per person. Such an approach involves considering the related water usage, greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint—the energy required to cultivate, harvest and

transport food—plus processing associated food waste. Here are some top choices.

Foods that Go Easy on Water Hydroponic greens are hands-down winners. The Shelton Family Farm, near Whittier, North Carolina, weekly produces 10,000 to 12,000 heads of hydroponically grown Bibb lettuce. The controlled environment and carefully engineered nutrient delivery systems maximize all resources. “It’s an enclosed system that runs 24/7, and it’s highly efficient from a waterusage standpoint because we recycle the water,” says William Shelton Jr., a fourthgeneration family farmer. “The only water that’s actually consumed is what’s taken up and transpired through the plants.” In a moderate climate, energy costs to recycle the water and keep the plants at an even temperature are moderate, as well. Dry-tilled heirloom tomatoes, okra, melons and quinoa are drought-tolerant and only use available rainfall.

Foods that Go Easy on Greenhouse Gases

Plants beat meat. “Livestock farming produces from 20 to 50 percent of all man-

made greenhouse gas emissions,” says nutritionist and climate activist Jane Richards, of GreenEatz, in Mountain View, California. “You can reduce your footprint by a quarter by cutting down on red meats such as beef and lamb.” An exception is the vegetarian staple of rice. According to researchers at Project Drawdown, a climate solutions organization in Sausalito, California, rice cultivation is responsible for at least 10 percent of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and up to 19 percent of global methane emissions. New farming techniques, like mid-season draining of the rice paddies, could cut methane emissions by at least 35 percent. Richards notes, “Meat, cheese and eggs have the highest carbon footprint; fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts, much lower. The carbon footprint of a vegetarian diet is about half that of a meatlover’s diet.” Root crops such as carrots, radishes, potatoes and beets have a lower carbon footprint than above-ground plants due to less food waste. A beautiful beet is easier to grow than a bell pepper that blemishes more easily. Seasonal, regional fruit, vegetables, herbs and honey have a lighter carbon impact because they are transported shorter distances. Usually what grows best in a region and is consumed locally is also best for the climate. Foods naturally suited to their environment grow and taste better, and are packed with more nutrients, reports Sustainable Table, an educational nonprofit that builds healthy communities through sustainable eating habits (SustainableTable.org).

Hopeful Developments

New agricultural developments can also benefit our climate environment. According to Project Drawdown research, perennial grains and cereals could be pivotal in reaching soil, carbon and energy targets. The Land Institute, in Salina, Kansas, has been working with the Rodale Institute, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, to develop a perennial wheat that would not have to be planted from seed each year. This would save soil, carbon and both human and machine energy. Kernza, a new perennial grain proven to prosper in natural grasslands like the Great Plains, is not yet widely distributed. Maria Speck, author of Simply Ancient Grains, advises, “With up to 15-foot-long roots, it can be harvested for five years and uses less fertilizer than conventional wheat. Kernza tastes almost like a cross between rice and wheat—sweet, grassy, mesmerizing.” Michael Pollan, author of Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual and creator of the film Food, Inc., suggests we keep it simple: “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” Climatarians would add another guideline—eat as locally as possible. Nature’s Remedies How Animals Self-Medicate by Sandra Murphy

Every species embodies a solution to some environmental challenge, and some of these solutions are breathtaking in their elegance. ~Linda Bender, Animal Wisdom: Learning from the Spiritual Lives of Animals

F

rom birds and elephants to dolphins, animals, whether by instinct or learned behavior, have discovered ways to cope with parasites, pests, aches and pains. This science of self-medication is called zoopharmacognosy (zoo for animal, pharma for drug and cognosy for knowing). At home, a dog or cat that eats grass is practicing it to eliminate parasites or hairballs. Donald Brightsmith, Ph.D., of Texas A&M University, directs the Tambopata Macaw Project in the lowlands of southeastern Peru, studying the many macaws and other parrots that gather clay to eat as a supplement. First thought to help remove toxins from their bodies, clay adds needed sodium to their diet, researchers now believe. A pregnant elephant in Kenya’s Tsavo Park was observed by ecologist Holly 30

Greater Richmond Edition

Dublin, Ph.D., to travel miles to find a tree not normally eaten. Four days later, the elephant gave birth. Dublin discovered that Kenyan women make a drink from the same leaves and bark to induce labor. While studying Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in the Sabangau peat swamp forest in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, primatologist Helen MorroghBernard, Ph.D., of the University of Exeter, UK, observed an orangutan chew the leaves of a plant that were not part of its usual diet until it formed a lather. The orangutan spit out the leaves and used the lather much like humans apply a topical pain reliever. While animals have been known to eat certain plants when ill, hers may be the first sighting of an animal creating a salve. Nearby villagers grind the leaves to make

a balm for sore muscles and inflammation. Morrogh-Bernard believes humans learned this topical application from apes and passed it down through the generations. In the Red Sea, bottlenose dolphins rub against bush-like gorgonian corals covered by an outer layer of antimicrobial mucus that may protect them from infection, according to dolphin researcher Angela Ziltener, of the University of Zürich, Switzerland. “It’s amazing how much we’ve learned, but forgotten,” says Ira Pastor, CEO at Bioquark Inc., in Philadelphia, a life sciences company developing biologic products to regenerate and repair human organs and tissues. “We live with other organisms which from a health and wellness perspective are much further advanced than humans. No other species tries to cure with any single solution. Nature employs multiple options. We’re not appropriately imitating nature yet. We need to do more.” Cindy Engel, Ph.D., of Suffolk, England, author of Wild Health: Lessons in Natural Wellness from the Animal Kingdom, says, “Animals rely on plants to provide them with the essentials of life, making their health intimately dependent on plant chemistry to provide everything they need to grow, repair damage and reproduce.” She continues, “Wild animals carry diseases that affect livestock and humans. It’s sensible to explore why they’re successful in fending off the worst effects in order to find ways to improve our own health, instead of just trying to eradicate the disease. We can learn from behavioral self-help strategies animals employ.” Accomplishing this is more difficult than ever, she believes, because today’s severely shrinking habitat makes it hard to find truly wild animals and plants. “Over the last 100 years, we’ve done a horrible disservice to all life by destroying habitat and exploring only a small percentage of what nature has to offer,” agrees Pastor. “As patents expire, pharma has to change. It’s important to develop botanicals. We’re advised to vary our diet and exercise, yet take the same dose of the same pill daily. We’ve studied dead organisms under microscopes, but living organisms, even as small as microbes, can communicate helpful positive reactions.”

Sealife Sanctuary Greenpeace Lobbies to Create Huge Antarctic Preserve The South Pole is Earth’s last uninhabited outpost, and Greenpeace seeks to establish an Antarctic sanctuary of almost three-quarters of a million square miles in the Weddell Sea adjacent to the vast continent that would protect whales, penguins and other wildlife. The nonprofit has called for governments to show greater vision and ambition. Frida Bengtsson, head of the Greenpeace Antarctic campaign, states, “Over the next 12 months, we have an opportunity to make history: to create an Antarctic Ocean sanctuary which would be the largest protected area on Earth.” She notes that it would also ensure healthier oceans that soak up carbon dioxide to moderate climate change. The proposal, submitted by the European Union and promoted by the German government, will be considered in October by the governmental bodies responsible for managing the Antarctic marine environment. It follows the successful adoption of the Ross Sea sanctuary in 2016.

SLEEP GREAT EVERY NIGHT “I’ve been using Sleep Apnea Relief for the past three months and now my pulminologist wants to pass it on to his patients who wear CPAP.” - Florence, NY, NY

50% OFF Leg Relaxer with coupon code LR50 30% OFF Sleep Apnea Relief with coupon code SAR30

“For 42 years we searched for something to take care of Restless Leg Syndrome. Not only does this product work but it works instantly! It’s Terrific. I recommend it to anyone who has this problem.” - Robert- Nebraska

Now you can end Sleep Apnea , Restless Legs and Leg Cramps and get a good Night’s sleep – night after night. Hi, I’m Steve Frank and I suffered from sleep apnea for years, so I know exactly what you’re going through. I even tried the CPAP machine but I could not sleep with anything strapped to my face. It was a serious problem and I was determined to find an answer. As an herbalist, I diligently pursued a group of herbs that would correct this problem and thank goodness, my persistence paid off! My patent-pending formulation has helped thousands and I use it every night. Now you can try it too! My Mom asked me what to do about persistent leg cramps. She had tried all the suggested supplements but still had problems. I put together a group of herbs to relax nerves, reduce tension and increase circulation. It worked great for her! Later, I found that it works for Restless Legs as well. Now you can use it too.

You owe it to yourself & your spouse to try these great products! 44
