ow! How quickly this year has gone by. I truly can’t believe it is already November—the elections are here and the holidays are upon us. I kind of want to slow down time—it’s my oldest son’s senior year of high school and while I know Davis will be ready to head off to college, I’ll be so sad to have him go (and I’m sure his brother isn’t ready for all of his parents’ attention!). Something that helps me slow down and find a sense of calm in the hectic, busy days of work, school, activities, shopping, chores and the extra stressors that can pop up when we’re least expecting them, is meditation and mindfulness. As meditation teacher, Sharon Salzberg, so aptly states, “In the space created by mindfulness we remember our true identity.” We wrote about meditation and mindfulness in our last issue, and I try to make it a regular practice—to slow down, breathe and focus on the present moment. I don’t manage to do it everyday, but I am always amazed at what a difference it makes when I do make it a priority. It can be as simple as becoming aware of the breath, taking a walk in nature, observing the details of a beautiful flower or coloring a mandala like the one you will find to color on page 28. There are so many easy ways to get lost in the moment—to switch from do-ing to just be-ing. I find that when I give myself the gift of solitude and stillness—even for just a few minutes—I am able to be kinder to myself and those around me. Lucky for us, kindness isn’t lacking in RVA, especially during the holiday season. Staff writer, Clair Norman, highlights several Richmonders who are spreading peace and love in the article, “Generosity is Contagious—Catch It.” I hope your holiday season is filled with generosity and kindness. Try to find some moments for yourself, to slow down and be present. Take a deep breath right now—breathe in, hold it, exhale slowly. And consider these words by Danna Faulds –

Mindful Moms Study Seeks Volunteers

T

he Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Nursing is recruiting pregnant women for a new Mindful Moms research study, which involves gentle prenatal yoga and nurse-led motivational interviewing. The National Institutes of Health recently awarded a grant to Patricia Kinser, Ph.D., for a pilot study that will examine how motivational interviewing and prenatal yoga might reduce or prevent depression during and after pregnancy. “Nearly 20 percent of pregnant women experience depressive symptoms during pregnancy and 13 percent experience chronic, recurrent symptoms,” says Kinser, whose research focuses on stress and depression in women and their families. “Appropriate treatment of depressive symptoms in pregnancy is essential, yet many women find the typical treatments such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy insufficient to address their symptoms,” Kinser says, adding that women are often concerned about the stigma and cost of drugs and the possible side effects on themselves or their babies. “Pregnant women are in great need of safe, inexpensive self-management therapies to enhance their well-being, reduce the burden of symptoms during and after pregnancy and prevent chronic reoccurrence of depression.” For more information, contact Amy Rider, project director, at BSWS-1231 Natural Awakenings Ad Sept Oct 7.5x4.5 finalHR.pdf 804-828-5579 or RiderAW@vcu.edu.

Learn About the Effects of Oxalic Acid

S

ally K. Norton, a Richmond nutrition researcher and consultant, will conduct a two-part seminar from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., November 3 and 10, at Goochland County Parks and Recreation. She will share the simple diet changes that can relieve or completely eliminate many painful, long-standing health problems. Those with joint pain, chronic fatigue, gout, bone loss or sleep, kidney or stomach disorders may not know that a chemical naturally occurring in foods we believe are healthy could be to blame. “People don’t know that foods such as spinach, soy, celery, figs and almonds can be a problem,” says Norton. Those foods contain the highly corrosive chemical, oxalic acid. Oxalic acid bonds with calcium, iron, magnesium and other metals to form tiny crystals called oxalates that irritate bladders and lodge in arteries, joints, bones and kidneys.

Admission: $16/session. Location: 1800 Sandy Hook Rd., Goochland. Register: APM.ActiveCommunities.com/ Goochland/home.

Grandmaster Anthony Moy Tung states, “Everyone should learn how to protect themselves. Our women’s classes offer a comfortable and safe place to come get in shape, feel more confident and learn how to develop devastating punching power, speed, accuracy and timing. No egos, just real kung fu for real self-defense.” Location: 1324 W. Main St. For more information, call 804-497-7555 or visit KungFuRichmond.com. natural awakenings

ichmond author Mary Wallace teaches simple, sustainable strategies for living a healthier life in a new book, Lifestyling Wellness. Once an overweight, overstressed and fatigued corporate insomniac struggling with a thyroid condition, she shares how she dropped nearly 25 pounds and four dress sizes by changing what she ate. Wallace explains that both food and lifestyle impact our everyday lives and long-term health. As an author, speaker and food and lifestyle coach, her clients often require support with side-stepping fads to manage weight, energy issues, food confusion and cravings. Some clients come to her for help following doctor’s orders.

Local Women Launch Campaign Focused on Friendship and Illness

S

arah Choi and Rebecca Thomas have launched the new website, IfIGetSick. com, with icebreakers, tips, guidelines and videos to help start conversations to help friends broach difficult conversations regarding life-threatening illnesses and set expectations and commitments before someone becomes sick. The idea for If I Get Sick emerged after Thomas’ breast cancer diagnosis in 2014. Both restauranteurs, the two women formed a friendship over food and shared interests. As Thomas explained her experiences about cancer and Choi listened, the two women realized there was more they could do than just talk about the past. They could have a conversation about what they could do for each other if one of them was ill. If I Get Sick will also utilize social media to raise awareness and encourage talk among friends that could ultimately lead to conversations about health, friendship, commitment and care. “We want women to feel comfortable bringing up this topic with friends and talking about what the friendship could be like if the other one ever gets sick,” says co-founder Choi. “We’re a society that shies away from awkward and unsettling topics, but the impact this conversation could have truly could be life changing—for both the sick and the well.” Boiled down to the most basic level, If I Get Sick’s hashtag and motto is “letstalk.” For more information, visit IfIGetSick.com.

Non-Invasive Body Contouring Reduces Belly Fat

E

ven with diet and exercise, most people have areas of stubborn fat that seem impossible to get rid of. Increased waistlines not only affect a person’s self-esteem, but health-related issues including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and cancer can also benefit from reducing stomach fat. SculpSure, a breakthrough treatment for fat in the abdomen and love handles, helps patients achieve a slimmer appearance without surgery. Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, SculpSure is a light-based treatment that destroys up to 24 percent of targeted fat in 25 minutes. Damaged fat cells are absorbed and removed from the body, with results seen in six to 12 weeks. Because SculpSure is noninvasive, patients can return to normal activities immediately. Additional benefits include improved health and self-esteem.

T

he human brain does not function optimally in society’s noise-filled environment. The brain, like the body, needs rest to function, and that comes with silence. A recent study in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience discovered that the brain is able to integrate both internal and external information into a “conscious workspace” when resting. Constant distractions and noises can detract from the brain’s ability to process critical information. Noise also elevates stress hormone levels within the brain. Research published earlier in Psychological Science examined the effects that the relocation of the main Munich airport, in Germany, had on children’s health and cognition. Gary W. Evans, researcher and professor of human ecology at Cornell University, notes that when exposed to constant noise, children develop a stress response that causes them to ignore it. The study’s subjects tuned out both harmful sounds and stimuli that they should be paying attention to, including speech. Silence has the opposite effect, releasing tension in brain and body. Exposure to chronic noise can also hinder children’s cognitive development, according to a study from the World Health Organization and the European Commission Joint Research Centre; this includes language skills and reading ability. To help counter modern noise pollution, attention restoration theory suggests that individuals placed in environments with lower levels of sensory input can recover some of the cognitive abilities they have lost.

After up to 20 treatments over six months, the women receiving acupuncture reported a 37 percent reduction in hot flashes, while the control group saw a 6 percent increase. The symptom relief among the women treated with acupuncture persisted for a year. The researchers also found that the acupuncture group experienced an improvement in several menopausal quality of life measurements. Nancy Avis, Ph.D., a professor of public health sciences at Wake Forest University and lead author of the study, says, “There are a number of nonhormonal options for treating hot flashes and night sweats that are available to women. None seem to work for everyone, but our study showed that acupuncture from a licensed acupuncturist can help some women without any side effects. It also showed that the maximum benefit occurred after about eight treatments.”

recent study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reports that regular exercise during pregnancy can reduce the rate of Cesarean deliveries. Conducted by Thomas Jefferson University Medical College researchers, the study followed more than 2,000 pregnant women split into two randomized groups. Half of them exercised 35 to 90 minutes, three to four times a week, while the others did not. Just under 18 percent of the women in the exercise group ended up having Cesarean deliveries versus 22 percent in the non-exercising group. Exercising during pregnancy also appears to improve gestational health. The study participants that worked out regularly experienced a lower incidence of both hypertensive disorders and diabetes mellitus.

Thanksgiving Lite

Turning the Tide for Turkeys

photo courtesy of the Farm Sanctuary

Turkeys and Thanksgiving go together for 88 percent of Americans surveyed by the National Turkey Federation. Each year, more than 46 million turkeys provide the entrée for gatherings, yielding leftovers for sandwiches, stew, chili, casseroles and turkey burgers. In 2011, 736 million pounds of turkey were consumed in the U.S., while a few lucky birds avoided the chopping block. The pardoning of a White House turkey began in 1863 when President Lincoln’s son, Tad, interceded on behalf of the bird and its life was spared. Now a tradition, two dressed birds and one live turkey are delivered to the White House each year. The live bird is “pardoned” and lives out its life on a historical farm. At the Farm Sanctuary, turkeys get sponsored or adopted instead of eaten. “Turkeys are friendly and follow you around like puppy dogs. They’ll try to sit on your lap to be petted,” says Gene Baur, president and co-founder of the sanctuary’s New York and two California locations. “At our Celebration for the Turkeys, we feed them cranberries, pumpkin pie and squash. People visit to see them enjoy it. Guests’ snacks are vegan.” Hundreds of turkeys have been adopted and given a lifelong home since the program’s inception in 1986. More than 8,000 people pledged to sponsor a turkey living at the sanctuary in a recent year, proving it’s not necessary to be a president to pardon a turkey. Conventional Grocery Chains Go Organic Arina P Habich/Shutterstock.com

The Kroger grocery chain, with nearly 2,500 U.S. stores, including subsidiaries Ralphs, Fry’s, King Soopers and Food 4 Less, has decided to go all in on the organic food market as a follow-up to the 2012 release of its Simple Truth brand of organic foods. Kroger President Michael Ellis says, “We’re really just answering the customer’s call for more and better,” giving Whole Foods Market more competition. Walmart has also begun to satisfy the growing health concerns of its shoppers by integrating organic options in its supermarkets. Now the challenge is for organic farming—which intentionally works to minimize agricultural impacts on the health of people and the planet—to meet the greater demand nationwide for healthier foods. Although implementation will vary depending on climate, experts advise that it begins with farms adopting healthy soil practices. It’s up to consumers to keep the momentum going. Biodegradable Bottle Algae-Based Jars Quickly Decompose

Ari Jónsson, a 32-yearold student at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, has invented an all-natural water bottle that holds its shape when full and decomposes when empty. He debuted his creation at the DesignMarch 2016 festival in Reykjavík, Iceland. The only two materials needed to create the bottle are agar, a gelatinous substance that comes from red algae, and water. “I just followed the path in what I was researching, trying to find new ways to use materials,” says Jónsson, who combined the two ingredients, heated the mixture, poured it into a mold, and then quickly cooled it. The H2O binds and thickens the agar when cooled, retaining the shape of the water bottle mold, explains Jónsson. When the finished bottle is empty, “It will rot like other foods.” The bottles can sustainably decompose in soil, although Jónsson has yet to determine exactly how long that process will take. A plastic water bottle takes more than 1,000 years to biodegrade, and in the U.S., more than 2 million tons of the containers are languishing in landfills. Source: TakePart.com

Bleep Cheap

The temptation to buy inexpensive clothes whispers, “It’s smart to trend with the latest fad,” or “Disposable wear can be tossed if it gets stained,” or “I can wear this outfit only once for a special event.” The lure to buy future throwaways seems especially prevalent during the holiday season of gifting and gatherings. Consumers can fall into the cycle of buying from inexpensive chain stores, wearing items a few times and then discarding them during spring cleaning purges. According to The Atlantic magazine, Americans now buy five times as much clothing annually as they did in 1980, yet recycle or donate only 15 percent of it. They simply discard 10 million tons as waste, reports the Huffington Post. Conscious consumers consider the extended consequences of their purchases. The production and transporting of an average shirt, for example, can deliver about nine pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, reports Eve Andrews, culture editor for Grist.com. She offers five tips: buy less; shop smarter and only for what’s truly needed; look for durability and design that won’t fall apart or look dated in a few months; decrease frequency of laundering to increase the life of the garment; and donate what no longer works. Buying items that are durable, timeless and made under fair labor conditions from selected organic, resale and outlet stores that sell high-end clothing that lasts at reduced prices will save money over time and reduce resource abuse and waste. Five top outlet chains for superior and lasting value per a 2016 Consumer Reports readers survey are Bon Worth, L.L. Bean, Haggar, OshKosh B’gosh and Izod. Quality labels are welcomed by consignment stores, so the wearer can even retrieve some of the purchase price for gently-used classics. Giving used threads to thrift shops, churches, The Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries is another way to extend the life of items, help others and save landfill space. Another option is to cut up portions of clothing earmarked for disposal so they can live on as cleaning rags for home and vehicles.

he kindness movement is alive and well in Richmond, with many opportunities to be generous. One place to give and receive kindness on December 25 will be at Maldini’s Ristorante, on Forest Hill Avenue, where free meals are available for the homeless. Owner Marcello Armetta started this act of kindness in 2014. Armatta’s wife, Rhenda, makes invitations to hand out; they also use email and post a small sign inside the restaurant to promote the offer. Folks line up out the door for their buffet-style meal, and volunteers help serve it. It is the one day of the year the owners hope their restaurant is not so busy, so they can help bring more people in off the streets. “This is something that allows us to give back to the community that we love so much,” says Rhenda. “We have been so blessed in our lives, it’s only fair to bless someone else with an act of kindness.” At Fort Lee, the Holiday Helper program helps military members facing difficult times have a memorable holiday 18

season by allowing them to shop for toys free of charge. It serves all branches of the military, including the National Guard, wounded warriors at McGuire Veterans Hospital and reservists, providing toys to more than 1,200 military children each year. People can get involved by hosting fundraisers and toy drives, or by staffing the store on base. Yoga can be seen as a gift and inspire generosity, too. Local yoga teacher and entrepreneur, Sue Agee, promotes generosity and kindness through her work at Project Yoga Richmond, which has a pay-what-you-can, in-studio policy, as well as outreach programs that deliver yoga to challenged youths in the court system, children with different abilities, adult services and areas of Richmond that often are unrepresented. The idea is that the true gifts of yoga— abundance within, peace within and calm and clarity of purpose within— should be encouraged and available to all. the disadvantaged through his nonprofit Christ Cycles. “My gift is passion and love, and so I feel like it’s my job to use that,” says Edge. “I’ve been gifted with a huge heart, that’s my superpower.” Another example of a huge heart can be found in a group conceived and led by two local 9-year-old girls called RACE for Harmony. RACE is an acronym for Respect, Accept, Connect, Everyone. The group began when the young founders couldn’t wrap their minds around why people aren’t nicer to one another. Its mission is to perform random acts of kindness on a regular basis to inspire others and prove that kindness is contagious. The group raises money to help those less fortunate— their Harmony 5K raised $350 for the homeless and they made cards, signs and videos for those affected by the shootings in Orlando and the floods in West Virginia. With their friendly and creative mascot, Little Miss Harmony, a character drawn to represent every race, RACE for Harmony wants to reach the whole world with love from Rich-

mond, Virginia. A huge heart and gratitude can ultimately lead to greater happiness in life. According to Harvard Health, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with increased happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships. In the new year, Chrysalis Institute will offer Richmonders an opportunity to examine what scientists and sages have to teach us about happiness and how to optimize the feelings of joy, satisfaction, connection and purpose that affect our sense of happiness. Stanford- and Princeton-trained psychologist and researcher Catherine Sanderson will showcase the charge as Chrysalis Institute’s spring keynote speaker. Giving back to this wonderful community is a great way to find connection, purpose and happiness. HandsOn Greater Richmond provides individuals, families and groups with a multitude of options to make a difference through a web-based volunteer network, HandsOnRVA.org. With such opportunity to explore and act with kindness and role models to emulate, Richmond may well become known as America’s kindest city.

STAY SHARP Powerful Ways to Avoid Mental Decline by Lisa Marshall

A

slow descent into dementia seemed inevitable for a 66-yearold man that had been misplacing his keys, missing appointments and struggling at work. He failed doctor-administered cognitive quizzes and tested positive for a gene variant linked to an exponentially higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease. A brain scan revealed scattered clusters of sticky, amyloid plaque—a hallmark of the disease. His hippocampus, or memory center, had shrunk to rank in the lowest 17 percent of men his age. Told there wasn’t much that could be done, he sought the help of University of California, Los Angeles Alzheimer’s researcher Dale Bredesen, a neurologist and founding president of the independent Buck Institute for Research on Aging. He recommended a personalized, 36-point plan, including a high-fat/low-carb diet, intermittent 20

fasting, strict sleep schedule, select dietary supplements and other lifestyle changes. Within three months, family members reported marked improvements in his memory. At 10 months, brain scans revealed his hippocampus had grown 12 percent. “Such improvements are unprecedented,” says Bredesen, who described this and nine other hopeful cases in a provocative paper published in June in the journal Aging. “These are the first examples of a reversal of cognitive decline in pre- and early Alzheimer’s patients.”

Addressing the Sources

Bredesen is among a small but growing group of researchers, physicians, caregivers and patients challenging the conventional wisdom that the road to dementia goes one way, with no cure or repair of damage done. They argue that the key to both prevention and

NARichmond.com

reversal, at least in early stages, is to pinpoint its numerous drivers—from nutritional and hormonal deficiencies and exposure to infection to environmental toxins and harmful drugs—and attack them simultaneously. It’s a stark departure from the classic, often unsuccessful, one-pill treatment approach. Of the 244 clinical trials for Alzheimer’s drugs between 2002 and 2012, all but one failed. “Imagine having a roof with 36 holes in it, and your drug patched one hole. You still have 35 leaks,” says Bredesen, who believes his synergistic approach—the Bredesen Protocol—can likely make Alzheimer’s drugs work better or render them unnecessary. Skeptical colleagues point out that Bredesen’s paper described only 10 case studies, not a clinical trial. “It is intriguing, but not enough to make recommendations to physicians or patients,” says Keith Fargo, Ph.D., director of scientific programs and outreach for the Chicagobased Alzheimer’s Association. “The current consensus in the scientific community is that we do not have a way to reverse dementia.” While agreeing that a larger study is needed, Neurologist David Perlmutter, of Naples, Florida, whose bestsellers Brain Maker and Grain Brain promote nutritional changes for supporting brain health, considers Bredesen’s study revolutionary. “To reverse Alzheimer’s in one patient is monumental, much less 10,” says Perlmutter. They recently presented together at a conference organized by Sharp Again Naturally, a New York nonprofit that educates patients and caregivers about natural means of slowing and reversing cognitive decline. After losing her mother to Alzheimer’s, the nonprofit’s co-founder, Jacqui Bishop, 74, stopped her own frightening decline by changing her diet and getting her thyroid hormone levels under control via supplements. Now she’s helping others do the same. She says, “We are trying to change the conversation from one of despair to one of hope.”

Mending Body and Brain

Key to Bredesen’s approach is the notion that instead of being one disease, Alzheimer’s consists of three sub-types

Lifestyle changes can prevent and slow cognitive decline. Some say they also reverse it.

Resources Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org

with distinct drivers: inflammation or infection; harmful environmental exposures; and/or lack of neuron-nurturing hormones. To determine which one to target, he tests patients for blood-sugar, inflammation and hormone levels, heavy metals and critical nutrients such as D and B vitamins. Then he crafts a personalized plan. He notes that the 10 years it can take to progress from subtle decline to full-blown Alzheimer’s provides a huge opportunity. “Ideally, we want people to come in when they have mild impairment or are asymptomatic,” says Bredesen, advising that tests be done for the APOE4, or “Alzheimer’s gene” in one’s 40s. “People have not wanted to know in the past because they’ve been told there is nothing they can do about it. We completely disagree.” One way to stay cognitively sharp is to eat fewer carbs (which boost blood sugar) and eat more fat, says Perlmutter. “There is a clear relationship between elevated levels of blood sugar and increased risk of Alzheimer’s.” One study, published in 2013 in the New England Journal of Medicine, tracked 2,067 healthy adults for seven years and found that the higher their average glucose level, even if they weren’t diabetic, the more likely they were to develop dementia. For instance, those with a level of 115 milligrams per deciliter were 18 percent more at risk than those measuring 100 milligrams per deciliter. A 2012 study published in Neurology followed 266 adults for four years and found that those with higher blood sugar saw certain areas of the brain shrink 6 to 10 percent more than those with lower blood sugar. Gluten can also be problematic, advises Perlmutter, when it’s inflammatory and driving brain degeneration. In contrast, good fat, like that in avocados, fatty fish, coconut oil and walnuts, serves as a foundation for neurons and an efficient, clean-burning fuel source for the brain. This is particularly helpful in someone with early-stage Alzheimer’s, says Bredesen, because the

disease can make it harder for the brain to use sugar for fuel. In some cases, both doctors recommend an extremely low-carb, or “ketogenic” diet (fewer than 60 grams of carbs per day). Starved of carbohydrates, the liver produces fat-like compounds called ketones, a brain-fuel source shown to stimulate growth of new neural networks. Bredesen also recommends 12 hours of fasting each night, with zero food intake within three hours of going to sleep. Fasting promotes a process called autophagy, by which the brain essentially cleans itself of damaged cellular material. Eight hours of sleep is also vital. According to University of Rochester research, the space between brain cells opens up during sleep, allowing cleansing channels of fluid to flow more freely. “If you were operating your house 24/7 with no time to rest or clean, it would be disastrous,” says Bredesen. “The same is true of your brain.” Also, they say, keep teeth clean because bacterial infections, including those in the gums, have been shown to hasten formation of neuron-killing plaque. Also critically examine the prescription drugs being ingested. A recent study of 74,000 people published in JAMA Neurology found that regular use of heartburn drugs like Prilosec and Nexium increased dementia risk by 42 to 52 percent. Meanwhile, anticholinergic drugs like Benadryl and statin drugs prescribed to manage cholesterol have also been linked to increased dementia. “We see ‘statin brain’ all the time,” observes Perlmutter, who says once patients go off the drugs, they tend to get better.

False Hope or Sound Advice

Fargo says researchers are keenly interested in many of the ideas in Bredesen’s paper. Although it’s too early to endorse them, numerous studies are underway. But he wonders if some patients that assert that they’ve reversed dementia actually suffered from something else, like sleep apnea or depression. Bredesen stands by his research, asserting that the 10 patients in his paper had all been formally diagnosed

Buck Institute for Research on Aging, BuckInstitute.org David Perlmutter, DrPerlmutter.com MPI Cognition, MPICognition.com Sharp Again Naturally, SharpAgain.org with Alzheimer’s or its precursors. One 69-year-old entrepreneur that was planning to close his business after 11 years of mental decline is now expanding it. A 49-year-old woman that scored poorly on neuropsychological tests showed no signs of cognitive decline when she was tested again nine months later. In all, more than 100 people have participated in the program. “We have people that are fourand-a-half years out and doing very well,” he says, noting that such strategies aren’t likely to work for someone with advanced Alzheimer’s. In some cases, the results may be more subtle, but for those caring for a sick loved one, any positive progress means a lot. Paul Tramontozzi knows. After his father, then 75, was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, the New York City financial advisor attended a Sharp Again Naturally meeting seeking advice. “I was skeptical, but when the answer you get from everyone else is, ‘There’s nothing you can do,’ you become more willing to listen.” He took his father off his cholesterol medication, fed him spoonfuls of coconut oil daily and put him on a specific supplement regimen. His balance improved and he could participate in family outings again. “If you had told me a few years ago we’d be able to take Dad to a restaurant for his 80th birthday, I would have said, ‘No way.’ But we did.” Tramontozzi says his father isn’t cured, but the advice he obtained facilitated more time together and insights on how to avoid a similar fate. “These are all things a healthy 37-year-old should be doing right now anyway. I just wish we’d found out earlier.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. Connect at LisaAnnMarshall.com.

Salt Air in the City Salt Rooms Soothe Allergies and Skin Conditions by Avery Mack

A

ccording to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, as many as 50 million Americans are affected by seasonal or year-round nasal allergies. Additionally, 56 million suffer from eczema, psoriasis or rosacea. Prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs may help, but aren’t a cure. Salt therapy can be a gentler, all-natural solution for easing associated symptoms. While eating too much salt is bad for the body, breathing it is a healthy activity. The Greek word for salt is halos, and halotherapy provides a welcome alternative to conventional pills, sprays and injections. In the mid-1800s, after salt mine workers in Poland were found to have a low rate of respiratory illness, the Wieliczka Salt Mine Health Spa was established on the site of a mine to treat clinic patients for asthma and allergies. That pioneering facility is still in operation. “In the beginning, I think salt therapy was seen as a time-consuming novelty. Now, holistically minded people are more supportive,” says Clay Juracsik, owner of the St. Louis Salt Room, in Maplewood, Missouri. The room’s walls are covered in salt, with blocks of backlit Himalayan

pink salt at floor level. Clients wear disposable booties to walk through inches-deep, loose, mineral-rich Dead Sea salt to reclining chairs. The lights dim, soft music plays and salt, rich in negative ions, infuses the air for a 45-minute session. “We have a second, smaller room where the walls and floor are not salted, so a child and parent can move around or play without disturbing others. Our youngest client was 2 weeks old,” says Juracsik. With the help of specially designed machines and software, microscopic salt particles one to five microns in size are circulated through the air to be deeply inhaled. As a natural anti-inflammatory agent, salt helps reduce swelling of throat tissues and nasal passages, making breathing easier for individuals suffering from such respiratory ailments as allergies, asthma, bronchitis and sinusitis. “True halotherapy is based on using 99 percent pure sodium chloride in the halogenerator,” says Leo Tonkin, co-founder of the Salt Therapy Association, in Boca Raton, Florida. “Dead Sea, Himalayan or other salts can be used as décor.”

NARichmond.com

“My husband, Gary, had three sinus surgeries before he discovered a salt room during a trip to London and had a eureka moment,” relates Ellen Patrick, owner of four Breathe Easy salt rooms in New York City and nearby Westchester County. “A client’s 4-year-old son tells Mom when he needs a treatment to ‘make his nose work better,’” reports Lisa Cobb, owner of Luxury on Lovers, in Dallas, Texas. “He uses a salt bed similar in style to a tanning bed and large enough for his mother to be with him for a 20-minute treatment. Pilots and flight attendants like salt rooms to counteract the recirculated air on planes. Athletes use them to increase lung capacity. A treatment works like a visit to the ocean.” A recent pilot study conducted at The Salt Room, in Orlando, Florida, and published in the International Journal of Respiratory and Pulmonary Medicine, concluded, “Halotherapy is associated with improvement in symptoms of sinus disease in cystic fibrosis and should be explored as an adjunct treatment.” Salt’s anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties may also reduce skin swelling and itchiness, and even acne, without drying the skin. Increased lung capacity aids blood circulation, which also helps improve skin health. Salt room operators note that frequent treatments are needed during early stages of therapy or during acute outbreaks of conditions, but can be reduced to a maintenance level over time. Juracsik remarks, “The best success I’ve seen is with respiratory ailments like bronchitis and pneumonia. We don’t need a new, fancy pill for every illness. Salt is historically proven to be a natural and effective way to improve respiratory health.” Options go beyond basic treatments. “Meditating in the salt room allows double relaxation,” comments Patrick. “Salty yoga is one of my favorite therapies because clients can exercise and breathe easier at the same time. Each time, the group receiving chiropractic adjustments reported the greatest improvements (Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics). Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A study published in Explore suggests that chiropractic care combined with other holistic elements such as appropriate nutrition may provide a more gentle, yet effective approach than conventional psychotropic drugs. It employed chiropractic treatment for boys 9 to 13 years old diagnosed with ADHD. Spinal manipulation with nutritional supplementation was reported to improve hyperactivity, inattentiveness, impulsiveness and behavioral, social and emotional difficulties. Headaches. Based on recent studies, spinal manipulation has proven effective against migraines and headaches originating from the neck. Manual therapy of the spine, along with neck exercises, promotes improvement in patients with neck-related headaches. Side effects are rare and minor (Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics). Dr. Edward Group is CEO and cofounder of the Global Healing Center, in Houston, TX (GlobalHealingCenter. com). He is a doctor of chiropractic trained in naturopathy, herbals and clinical nutrition; author of The Green Body Cleanse; and a diplomate of the American Board of Functional Medicine.

SORE THROAT SOOTHERS Natural Remedies Help Kids Heal

T

by Kathleen Barnes

he household is settling for the night when the 5-yearold cries out, “My throat hurts!” “There’s no need to panic,” says Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, in Pecos, New Mexico, an integrative physician and chief medical officer of Weil Lifestyle. “It’s pretty easy to figure out if it’s strep throat, which requires antibiotics, or something you can treat at home.” Only 10 to 20 percent of sore throats in children are caused by Streptococcus bacteria which, if not properly treated, can lead to heart damage. The first question to ask is, “What are the symptoms?” If these include sudden onset of a severe and worsening sore throat without any complaints of scratchiness; a fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or more; headache or stomach pain; and the lack of a stuffy nose, cough or sign of a cold—a trip to the pediatrician is essential and a course of antibiotics is necessary, says Low Dog. The vast majority of youngsters’ sore throats, which may accompany a common cold, are caused by viruses and will heal on their own in about a week. Many natural remedies will help children feel better and relieve the pain; some cost so little they are nearly free. Salt water gargle: “A glass of warm water with half a teaspoon of sea salt swirled into it is an old-school remedy that works well for kids at least 5 years old,” says Erika Krumbeck, a naturopathic doctor and licensed primary care physician practicing pediatrics in Missoula, Montana. She notes that a salt water gargle can also moderate the symptoms of strep until the child can see a doctor. The Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies confirms that the salt water draws excess fluid from inflamed throat tissues. It also loosens mucus and removes other irritants, including bacteria, allergens and fungi. Just make sure children don’t swallow the salt water, counsels Krumbeck. 26

Warm compresses: A warm water compress using a wet hand towel applied for 10 or 15 minutes every hour loosens mucus and is soothing. “It’s amazing how effective these familiar practices are,” says Krumbeck. “Grandma knew what she was doing.” Lemon juice and honey: “Honey is sweet, so kids love it,” says certified nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, of New York and Los Angeles. This traditional recipe works because the honey has antibacterial properties and the lemon juice is packed with immune-boosting antioxidants. Snyder cautions that babies younger than 12 months old should never be given honey because their immune systems cannot handle the bacterial spores sometimes present in the sweet treat. Elderberry: The tiny purple berries of the Sambucus nigra L. plant shortens the duration of colds and flu often suffered by air travelers, according to research that includes a large Australian study. Elderberry syrup appeals to kids because it tastes delicious. Low Dog recommends keeping a bottle on hand at all times because it’s hard to know when a child will complain of a scratchy throat. “This yummy syrup is good for all ages. It’s so safe. I love it,” says Low Dog, adding, “Plus, you can always use it on whole-grain pancakes.” Sage and Echinacea: Drinking sage tea and gargling with echinacea are old-time remedies for sore throats that now have scientific backing, says Snyder. Go for a twofer and add a little echinacea to the tea, she suggests. A Swiss study showed that an echinacea/sage spray soothed sore throat symptoms just as well as a chlorhexidine/lidocaine spray, which can have side effects that include more swelling and even allergic reactions; the suggested spray should not be used with children under 12. Pairing up a dose of safe and gentle, time-tested sore throat recipes with a big hug will go far toward relieving most little ones’ suffering. Kathleen Barnes has authored numerous natural health books, including Food Is Medicine: 101 Prescriptions from the Garden. Connect at KathleenBarnes.com.

UNSAFE DRUGS Acetaminophen, a popular ingredient in over-the-counter children’s cold medicines like Tylenol, has been linked to twice the risk of developing asthma. Immediate side effects can include rapid heart rate and convulsions. Ephedrine, pseudophedrine and phenylephrine are popular ingredients in children’s cold medications even though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says they’re not effective. Side effects include the possibility of unsupervised children overdosing on the sugary concoctions and can even prove fatal. In 2008, the FDA warned parents not to use any such cold medications for children under 4. Antibiotics are not effective against the viruses that cause most colds and flu. Antibiotics kill bacteria like those associated with strep throat, not viruses. Using antibiotics for a cold can actually lead to future antibiotic resistance.

The Six Tastes of Ayurveda

Are you feeling sick, tired and out of balance?

A

ccording to ayurvedic wisdom, we need to enjoy six tastes on our tongue at each meal: sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent. The tongue’s experience of these tastes creates digestive reactions that trigger enzymes in our gastrointestinal (GI) tract that are conducive to healthy digestion, assimilation and elimination. One of the easiest ways to incorporate these six tastes in our meals is by using spice mixes called churnas that take the guesswork out. They can be used to fully season food or as a topping. Eating mindfully and with seasonal foods is also important in ayurveda, so never cook or eat them while agitated or angry. Take time to savor and relish foods and the six tastes. Sweet (the taste of pleasure): includes ripe bananas, sweet potato, beets, dates, honey, oils, most meats, rice, wheat, milk, ghee, red and yellow apples, red grapes, coconut, avocado, and grains. The sweet taste is nourishing, builds strength and vigor and supports the immune system. Salty (enthusiasm): includes salts, sea vegetables, dark leafy greens and seafood. Sour (increases digestive juices): includes yogurt, fermented foods, wine, aged cheese, citrus fruits, vinegars, pickles, green grapes, tomato, okra and eggplant. Pungent (aids digestion): includes garlic, ginger, all peppers, radishes, onions, cloves, cinnamon, mustard greens, horseradish, mustard seeds and mustard oil. Bitter (purifies, increases metabolism): includes chocolate, turmeric, black tea, coffee, fenugreek, aloe vera juice, dark leafy greens, lentils, dandelion root, chickpeas, mung beans and coffee. Astringent (drying, cooling): includes cabbage, raw vegetables, cranberries, okra, pomegranate, unripe bananas, raw potato, coffee beans, black tea, aloe, turmeric, cucumber and honey. COLOR ME CALM Grownups De-Stress with Adult Coloring Books by Avery Mack

C

oloring books are no longer solely the domain of children. Immersion in this fun, creative pastime by adults even for just 30 minutes can constitute a focused meditation that relieves stress. Doctor of Psychology Nikki Martinez, in Chicago, says that famed psychotherapist Carl Jung believed coloring helps patients release anxiety. “It uses both sides of the brain and improves organizational and fine motor skills,” says Martinez. “After I underwent a major surgery, I was on bed rest for eight weeks, and adult coloring books were a lifesaver. They passed the time, were pretty and kept me in a constant state of calm. I devoured them.” Publishers Weekly reported combined 2015 sales of 1.75 million cop-

ies for the 10 bestselling adult coloring books through November. This trend was years in the making, originating when parents colored with their kids and sometimes on their own. Adults around the world now join coloring book clubs, hold related parties and take coloring breaks at work. Last fall, Barnes & Noble hosted the one-day All-American Art Unwind, where customers colored and uploaded their results to Instagram and Twitter. Hallmark sent a crew of artists and calligraphers to select locations to help customers color their greeting cards. “We scheduled a coloring session for a 55-plus community workshop,” relates Ninah Kessler, a licensed clinical social worker with the Sparks of Genius Brain Optimization Center, in Boca

Raton, Florida. “People had so much fun they wouldn’t leave. It’s creative, portable and inexpensive. You never face blank paper because the lines are there; you just pick the colors. There’s no stress about possibly making mistakes.” “Animals, jungle or floral themes, and Zen-inspired mandalas are popular. Customers like realistic, intricate drawings,” explains Idalia Farrajota, a Dallas executive with Michaels craft stores, which offers free, in-store coloring sessions and provides supplies. (Download a free sample book at Tinyurl.com/ BotanicalColoringPages.) Johanna Basford, a renowned illustrator from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is a hit with colorists, catering to their penchant for nature with Secret Garden, Enchanted Forest and her latest, Lost Ocean. “My daughter wanted to color her life, not do generic drawings,” says Dieter Marlovics, prompting him to establish ReallyColor.com, in Chicago. “Really-Color converts photos into coloring book pages to make individually tailored pages.” Try these eco-tips: Sprout pencils, made with sustainable wood and fruitand-vegetable-based dyed clay instead of lead, are topped by non-GMO seeds that can be planted when the pencil becomes short. Inktense’s water-soluble brightly colored pencils mimic pen and ink; add water for translucency. Select recycled paper books, soy crayons, watercolor paints and non-toxic markers.
