The ‘smack ban’ Should anyone be allowed to tell you how to discipline your children?
IN LATE 2019, THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT RULED THAT ‘REASONABLE AND MODERATE PARENTAL CHASTISEMENT’ OF CHILDREN IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. WE ASK: SHOULD OUR COURTS BE INVOLVED IN PARENTING STYLES?
“The ‘spanking is always harmful’ narrative does not necessarily hold up under scrutiny” Reasonable and moderate chastisement may have been declared unconstitutional, but this defence has historically assisted parents against a charge of assault of their own children, provided, of course, that the discipline was both reasonable and moderate. It’s worth noting that abuse of or violence against children in any way has always been illegal – as it should be. In a nutshell, the new ruling means that any form of physical discipline – whether on the hand or on the bottom, however light

for children. Furthermore, the ‘spanking is always harmful’ narrative does not necessarily hold up under scrutiny. A case in point: Sweden versus Singapore’s rulings with regard to corporal punishment. In Sweden, spanking has been illegal since 1979. Studies show that since this ruling, youths have displayed a shocking and increased propensity for violence – children hitting parents and child-on-child assaults increased by 25%. On the other side of the scale, spanking is legal in Singapore. Here, youths excel academically. Despite population growth, crime continues to decrease. This is huge, considering Singapore has 12 times the population of Vancouver, but half of Vancouver’s crime rate. Food for thought?
“Children have a right to be protected from all forms of violence” In the judgement, the court emphasised that, based on South Africa’s history, a culture of authority that legitimates the use of violence is inconsistent with the values for which the Constitution stands. The court states that every child has his or her own dignity. This view of the court aligns with an earlier decision of the Constitutional Court written by Justice Albie Sachs in S v M (Centre for Child Law as Amicus Curiae) 2008, where he stated that: ‘A child is to be constitutionally imagined as an individual with a distinctive personality, and not merely as a miniature adult waiting to reach full size’. Corporal punishment is a violation of children’s rights to dignity, physical

end – it is enough that it breaches fundamental rights. A common fear in relation to the ban is that it will lead to increased prosecution of parents, and family separation; two key issues are important to remember here. Firstly, the primary aim of the ban is to stop parents from using corporal punishment through supportive and educational, not punitive, interventions. The aim is not to criminalise parents. Secondly, the de minimis principle (the law does not concern itself with trivial matters) in the case of assault ensures that minor assaults are only prosecuted in exceptional circumstances. In this way, equal protection of children from assault,

SA is the eighth country on the continent to do away with corporal punishment. integrity and equal protection under the law. Children have a right to be protected from all forms of violence. Government should be allowed to police how you discipline your children based on the fact that the rights of all South Africans, including children, are protected by the Constitution. Government is mandated to intervene whenever constitutional rights are violated. Intervention is justified given the high levels of violence against children in South Africa, especially at this time. Research evidence suggests that corporal punishment has a range of negative consequences for children, including heightened levels of societal and interpersonal violence (you can read some of the research at endcorporalpunishment.org/ resources/useful-links). It is important to remember that abolition is primarily about children’s human rights. We seldom look for evidence of the effects of physical assault on women in the home to know that it must
including within the family, does not mean that all cases of corporal punishment on children should lead to prosecution – just as this would not happen in all cases of assault on adults. Children’s dependence on their parents and the unique intimacy of family relations means that decisions to prosecute parents, or to formally intervene in the family, will and should be taken with very great care. The Con Court also noted that prosecuting parents is unlikely to be in the child’s best interests, so each incident shall be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. South Africa is not alone in this ruling – it is the eighth country on the continent to do away with corporal punishment in all settings, which says a lot.
What the law change really means
Explained by Lauren Kohn, a senior lecturer of Constitutional & Administrative Law at UCT; an Attorney of the High Court; and co-founder of SALegalAdvice.co.za. Prior to this judgment, parents could administer mild chastisement of their children for corrective and or admonitory purposes without being exposed to the risk of criminal charges. While hitting a child has always been assault under the country’s criminal law, parents were previously ‘allowed’ to smack their offspring if it fell within the bounds of ‘reasonable chastisement’. “In the past, through common law, parents were afforded a legal entitlement to discipline their own children, thereby conceding to them a unique independent authority in raising their children,” says Kohn, quoting from the judgment. Basically, parents were granted the use of moderate force as a ‘means of corrective educational discipline’.
WHY DID THE COURT RULE AS IT DID? “Section 12(1)(c) is plain and explicit: freedom from all forms of violence from all sources is constitutionally mandated,” explains Kohn. “Violence is defined broadly, and essentially entails the mere exertion of some force – or the threat thereof – with the objective to cause displeasure, discomfort, fear or hurt.” The court also found that a ‘mere smack’ violates the right to dignity. The best interests of the child are always paramount; in this case the court found that a positive parenting approach should rather be followed. “Even a trifling pat on the bum may see a parent end up with a criminal conviction [possibly with mitigation of sentence],” says Kohn. “Parents should heed this warning and adopt ‘positive parenting’ – after all, if a nosy neighbour catches you smacking your child, you could indeed end up with a criminal record for common assault.”

A Psychology of Consciousness report states that adults using VR while experiencing discomfort report an average 82% reduction in pain. But, without much scientific research backing its efficacy in labour, and with some critics saying the increase of cortisol from too much stimulation could inhibit the hormones the body needs to push labour along, it’s yet to be seen whether this will become our new birthing reality.

Is your beef burger killing the planet? Meat is a major point of contention when it comes to climate change. But to what extent would cutting cows from your diet – whether dairy or meat – help save our planet? ANDREA BURGENER investigates.
ith cattle’s need for land and their higher methane output, the spotlight has fallen on beef and dairy as global problem foods when it comes to climate change. Farming, nature and the politics of climate change are complex, and are all vital points to consider before we pick a side in the cow debate.
When did we start blaming cows for climate change?

Not all cows emit equally Yes, there really is a difference between grass-fed and grain-fed, and between free range versus battery farmed. Whether or not you can taste the difference, our planet feels the difference. Here are six factors to consider:

Food type
Majority of feed for cattle comes from
industrially farmed crops,
which are by and large fossil-fuel fertiliser based, chemically assisted and destructive to biodiversity and soil.
So much depends on production methods, and many researchers and farmers believe that feedlot (grain-fed) cattle are the real issue. Last half of the 20th century: Feedlot farming enters the picture, compared to cattle grazing the land they’ve lived on their entire lives.

Waste management
Another big factor within the feedlot set-up is the
disposal of waste.
Waste from feedlot animals doesn’t form part of a natural cycle the way it does when they’re on grass.

When in a concentrated area, this waste often becomes yet another emissions problem rather than automatically forming a positive part of natural cycles.

When cows are raised on grass, their food obviously requires no transportation.

Cattle taken off their natural diet often require antibiotics in order to keep infection at bay.
Fossil fuels & pesticides
Pastures – unlike crops – aren’t treated with pesticides and (in general) have no need for fossil fuelbased fertilisers. Cows fertilise

Up to 50% of topsoil carbon can be released during the tilling for one harvest of cattle feed.
Once harvested, this feed needs to be processed, stored and transported to the cattle. This all takes up arable land and uses fossil fuels.

Water usage
On the whole, feedlot farming won’t be able to utilise as much ‘free’ water, in the form of rain on pasture, as grass-fed cattle farming can. This forms a far bigger part of cattle’s water use than is generally realised.

The shorter the distance that your food has had to travel, the fewer fossil fuels that will have been used in the process. When properly managed, on land that is best suited, cattle can play a valuable part in eco-agriculture. The main thing to bear in mind is that the spectrum is wide and you need to be an informed consumer.

The mental benefits can include a sense of calm, vitality and presence. “One of the biggest changes I’ve enjoyed is that my yoga practice has taught me to keep calm in a challenging situation; in yoga this is a tough pose, but in real life it may be a long queue at Home Affairs, for example,” shares Heyman.

“If you’re looking for a strenuous, active workout, power yoga will get you to work up a sweat and is excellent for body and strength conditioning,” says Heyman. It focuses on fat-burning and muscle-toning results, adds Brigitta Bouwer, director and instructor at Yoga Motive. For those after an intense cardio practice, combine High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with your practice. “HIIT yoga is a faster-paced practice whereby practitioners perform postures in a faster sequence of moves, designed to elevate the heart rate for a cardio workout,” she explains.

ccording to professors Rachel and Stephen Kaplan, experts in ‘restorative environments’, office designs that include plants and vistas of nature lead to fewer headaches, less fatigue, reduced coughing, and increased creativity and productivity in the workplace. Based on these and similar findings, hospitals and care facilities are restructuring their interior spaces and activities for patients, says Dr Esther Sternberg, a doctor and professor in medicine and psychology. Quicker recovery, improved mood and immune function are all significant benefits.
Mint
Mint is rich in rosmarinic acid, a great antioxidant with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Mint tea improves bad breath, eases gastric pain, and can help relieve a common cold and sinus congestion. Chewing fresh leaves can help toothache, too. Dr Rajinder Singh, from the University of Benghazi’s Department of Pharmacognosy, identified mint as an excellent “scavenger of free radicals”. This means it can prevent or remove reactive oxygen species before they can damage cells.

Harvest flowers and young leaves early in the day. As the temperature rises, leaves and flowers taste more pungent. Add flowers to salads, sandwiches and to garnish pasta. Leaves make a tasty pesto sauce.

First impressions count
At some point in your life you’ve no doubt been told: first impressions count. And it’s true, they do. Personal branding is that and more. It’s a consistent representation of certain behaviour, performance and attitude. It’s how you portray yourself to – and are perceived by – your peers, especially in a professional capacity. It is an image people attach to you. It is also about your reputation: the network of people you’ve built who can recommend you and vouch for what you do. Often someone’s first
rely on you for – these qualities are your USP. While it’s always important to be mindful of your blind spots and to continuously work on these, don’t be afraid to own your areas of strength and unique talents. These will set you apart.

to impact someone’s life every time you interact with them. For example, I recently interviewed someone for a job who had a real hunger for the position. He wasn’t right for the role, but instead of getting HR to call him to say that his application was unsuccessful, I called him personally. I wanted to tell him how talented he is, that his interview went well but that unfortunately there are some areas in which he still needs to develop. If you: Work abroad You should know: The new tax exemption laws Perhaps you’re a contracted worker for an oil and gas company, or maybe you’re earning a few tax-free dirhams in Dubai before returning home. Before 1 March 2020, South African tax residents who work more than 183 days in a 12-month period overseas (of which 60 are continuous) were exempt from paying income tax. But from 1 March 2020, this exemption only applies to the first R1 million of employment income, says Marc Sevitz, co-founder of TaxTim. “Often, taxpayers are sent on secondment by their employers or go work overseas for a few years on contract. Taxpayers in this situation should ensure that their employers make use of the correct foreign income source codes on their IRP5s and keep records of when they were in and out of South Africa.”
If you: Have investments offshore You should know: All interest from foreign investment is fully taxable There are many compelling reasons for investing overseas, including diversifying your portfolio, reducing risk, and investing in global blue-chip companies. Offshore investments result in income, such as interest or dividends being earned. Unlike local interest, says Sevitz, there is no exemption threshold, so all interest from foreign investments is fully taxable. “Most foreign dividends are taxable, subject to exceptions, but the maximum they are taxed at is 20%. This is to keep the tax in line with South African dividends withholding tax.”
“Taxpayers should be very careful in setting up businesses overseas. Unless they are being managed and running actual operations in another country, SARS may take a dim view of this practice,” Sevitz cautions. This is especially key if your investment is substantial. “Owning shares in businesses overseas, when not just a small investment, can result in the income of that business being fully taxed in South Africa. If South African tax residents hold more than 50% of a company registered overseas, and they run that company from here, then all the profits (and some expenses are denied) are taxed as if that company was registered in South Africa.”

What happens to you digitally when you die? From your Facebook profile to your online banking details, what becomes of your digital legacy after you’ve passed? By EMMA SADLEIR
The Golden Rule According to Sadleir, the golden rule when it comes to digital content (both when you’re alive and when you’re six feet under) is the ‘Billboard Test’. If you wouldn’t want the content on a giant billboard with your name and surname and place of work, don’t put it on social media and don’t let it exist in a digital format. For example, would you want your family browsing through your very private photos on your photo stream? This test is certainly necessary to apply when thinking about who you want to access your digital assets.

or most of us, our digital presence is what people look at to get a better understanding of who we are. Managing this data is important, not only during our lives, but also when we pass away. But what actually happens to our digital presence and social media profiles when we die? Here are some things to consider...
Social media accounts Each social networking platform treats the death of an account holder slightly differently. We’ve listed some of the main ones below:
Twitter If you die, Twitter will work with a person authorised to act on behalf of your estate, or with one of your verified immediate family members, to have your account deactivated. You can also request that the account is permanently removed. Twitter will not hand over the access details of the deceased’s account to anyone.
What do you do if someone has passed away and their social media accounts are still active? FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM make provision for someone to report a death by submitting a photo of an obituary, death certificate, memorial card or similar documentation confirming that the person has passed away, after which the account will be memorialised. For TWITTER, only a family member can report the death of an account holder, after which the account will be deactivated.
How do you future-proof your digital presence?
Facebook As soon as Facebook is made aware that you have passed away, your account will be memorialised. You can choose to either appoint a legacy contact to look after your memorialised account or to have the account permanently deleted from Facebook. If you don’t choose to have your account permanently deleted, it will be memorialised as soon as Facebook is aware of the death. A memorialised
Do you want everything deleted or to remain ‘live’ forever? account allows friends and family to post memories of the deceased on the timeline but won’t appear in public spaces such as friend suggestions or birthday reminders. Memorialised accounts that don’t have a legacy contact can’t be changed.
Instagram Instagram also memorialises accounts as soon as it is made aware of a death, but these accounts can’t be changed and no one can log into the profile. Posts of the deceased user will stay on the site and are visible to the people they were shared with, but memorialised accounts do not appear in public spaces, like searches.
An increasing number of financial and estate planners are encouraging clients to include important information relating to their online accounts in their estate planning. Here are some things you can do to futureproof your online accounts in the event of your death: Make a list of your digital assets and online accounts, including every website on which you have an online presence. This includes social media accounts, email accounts, photo storage and sharing sites, videogaming accounts, websites or blogs that you manage and domain names you may own. Make a record of the usernames and passwords to each account, including answers to any security questions. Decide what it is that you want to happen with your accounts. For example, do you want everything deleted or to remain ‘live’ forever? Do you really want family reading personal emails or accessing other personal information? Leave specific instructions with a person you trust about how you’d like your accounts to be managed. Appoint a ‘digital executor’ – someone you trust to wind up your digital estate. Store this information in a secure but accessible place such as with an attorney; your estate executor; in a safe online storage facility; in a new email account to which only your digital executor has the password; or in a locked filing cabinet. Consider including reference to your ‘digital executor’ in your will.

What about your phone? Gone are the days of printing out photos and placing them in albums, or inheriting a shoebox of photographs when a family member dies. In the digital age, probably the most valuable asset on so many people’s phones is the mass of photos stored on these devices. If someone is not diligent about uploading photos to online storage sites or social media, or backing them up to the cloud, then all these special memories could be lost when you die. Your phone password and any data that is on your phone, should be covered in your list of digital assets. If not, your phone will simply switch off when the battery dies along with your memories.
Email accounts Not all email accounts have the same protocols after death. Some companies, like Google and Microsoft, outline their policies really well. Apple’s iCloud doesn’t do as good a job. Gmail allows a friend or relative to apply for the account of a deceased user and then either: submit a request for funds from a deceased user’s account (such as funds remaining in Adsense or Google wallet); obtain data from a deceased user’s account; or close the account.
Probably the most valuable asset on many people’s phones is the mass of photos.

Users also have the option of setting up an Inactive Account Manager, which either deletes or shares your account with a specifically appointed contact after a set period of inactivity.
Online banking Most bank accounts are frozen when the bank is notified of the death of the account holder, so even if someone has your login details, it’s unlikely that these would be of much value after your death. A bank is not allowed to give access to an account to anyone – including a spouse or family member of the deceased – until the executor has taken control of the account.
It’s not a bad idea to make use of an online password tracker to make sure that all of your passwords are kept in one place and are up to date. Dashlane is a highly rated password tracker. It has an ‘emergency’ feature that allows you to share all or some of your passwords with one or more contacts. The way this works is that you set a specific ‘waiting period’ after the emergency contact requests access.

Things fund managers wish you knew
Those in the know explain the intrinsics of investing and share the right questions to ask your financial planner. By ANGELIQUE RUZICKA
I
t can be difficult to get your head around financial products, as there are so many options. For example, there are over 1 000 unit trusts to invest in from a variety of sectors and asset classes – everything from global funds to property and fixed income funds. While it’s easy to speak to a financial planner and gain insight into their investment recommendations, the same kind of access can’t be extended to fund managers – the people behind the scenes making the decisions with your money. We spoke to a few fund managers from Sanlam to find out what they wish you knew about investing.

Do you know the fund manager’s mandate and why the fund was chosen?
Fund managers get given an investment mandate, and Gielie de Swardt, head of distribution in the retail business of Sanlam, believes it’s crucial that investors educate themselves on it. “You should ask your financial planner what the fund manager is trying to achieve. Ask: ‘What can they invest in and what are the restrictions?’” Shawn Phillips of Sanlam’s Glacier adds: “Ask your planner why they chose the asset manager and fund. Was it because of the performance of the fund or because the financial planner liked the manager’s investment philosophy?”

How is the fund manager measuring success?
Fund managers typically measure themselves against the performance of an index (stock exchange) or against their peers. De Swardt says investors must ask after the benchmark, the team dynamic and track record. “Find out their level of experience and how decisions are being made. The value of a group decision is that there are many debating the options rather than just one manager waking up one morning and choosing specific stock.”

What kind of access do you have to your money?
Different types of investment vehicles allow different kinds of access. De Swardt points out that with an endowment, for example, you’d only get access to the money at maturity, whereas a unit trust may give you access immediately. Policies like endowments may be good for you if you tend to dip into savings for frivolous reasons. But they’re not a good choice if you need money in an emergency.

Are you aware of the costs involved?
De Swardt says that costs should be a driver in your decision making, but not the only one. “Ask your planner to show you a comparison to what other fund managers operating in the same sector and fund type are charging. Also bear in mind that some of them do charge performance fees if they outperform,” he says.

Don’t judge them only on their past performance
Your fund manager’s past performance should be scrutinised, but this should only be a part of the many factors you consider. “Performance can give you an indication of what the manager can do in various cycles. Look at it all in relation to the goals they’re trying to achieve. You need to make like-for-like comparisons. It’s vital to ask your financial planner to see comparisons,” says de Swardt.

Know your risk profile
Investment risk is all about your willingness to take chances with your savings. While investing in stocks and shares usually provides you with a good return in the long run, your savings can be subject to the ups and downs of the stock market, which is often determined by investor sentiment, the economy and demand, among many other factors. Usually, the riskier the investment, the better the return. But, if you’re close to retirement, you don’t want to take on too much risk. Phillips says: “It’s important to understand if you’re in the right fund for your risk profile and what you are investing in.” De Swardt adds: “Look at your specific needs, and that will determine your risk profile. Your financial planner will recommend products and review this on an annual basis.”

cannabis-ness? Changes in our law have opened up a whole new category in business – but before you invest in cannabidiol, get clued up on what you can and can’t do. By TRACY LYNN CHEMALY
C
annabidiol is a mouthful. Even more so when you’re describing a cannabidiol-infused spiced superfood truffle. CBD is the friendlier layman’s term for this natural chemical compound extracted from the cannabis plant. You’d better memorise those three letters fast because CBD-based products and stores are popping up around the country. We’re seeing CBD appear in chocolates, teas, pizzas, moisturising lotions and homeopathic oils (even ones for pets).
Wait, what changed with the law? In May last year, our health ministry announced a year-long exemption that allows low-dose CBD products to be sold and consumed legally, opening up an opportunity for quick-on-the-mark entrepreneurs looking to tap into a growing wellness market.
Does using CBD affect my Sanlam policy? “The fact that cannabis has been decriminalised does not change how we underwrite for it or how we assess claims,” explains Karen Bongers, product actuary at Sanlam Individual Life. “At underwriting stage, we ask questions around prescribed treatment for medical conditions and at claim stage our policy wording for non-death benefits states that we will not admit claims resulting from taking medicine not according to medical prescription.”

Some studies have shown it to relieve anxiety, insomnia and arthritis.
But, although it’s legal to sell these products, PaulMichael Keichel, partner at Schindlers Attorneys and head of the firm’s Medicinal & Recreational Cannabis Law division says that making your own CBD products is not as easy. “Because you can only grow cannabis for personal or private use, you need a licence to grow it legally for commercial medicinal use,” he says.
Can CBD get you high? Unlike the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) component of cannabis, CBD has no psychoactive elements, and does not produce the high that whole dagga does, so any product using it only contains cannabis’ medicinal benefits. It is not addictive and is filled with healing properties. Some scientific studies have shown it to relieve anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain and arthritis. It can also aid with epilepsy and diabetes, and is used as a natural replacement for morphine in late-stage cancer.

Be clear on the packaging Keichel warns that any CBD products sold should comply with regulations, and recommends using packaging that clearly states how many drops or pieces of a product should be consumed in line with the maximum daily dose of 20mg of CBD.

Quality is key As with any product, Keichel recommends you investigate the CBD quality. “Be sure it’s not extracted with any harmful chemicals,” he says.

“If starting your own business, know the source of your CBD,” he advises, “and make sure it is licensed.”
Regulations dictate that CBD products may not claim to cure or treat any condition.
Does CO2 offsetting for flights work? The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, HRH Prince Harry and HRH Meghan Markle, made headlines when they used four private jets in 11 days. Their defence: they paid an organisation to offset the CO2 emissions. But does that work? Not really, says climate-change scientist Kevin Anderson. “For an offset project to be low-carbon, it must guarantee it doesn’t stimulate further emissions over the subsequent century.” Take tree-planting: fuel combustion plays a role in the planting process, as does getting the trees on site. According to a 2017 European Commission study, 85% of offset projects used by the EU failed to reduce emissions. The answer? Fly less and plan routes carefully to avoid inefficiencies.

Having been tread for over a millennium, there are a variety of routes to choose from. The reward? Japan’s highest waterfall, forming a majestic backdrop to the Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine. HOW LONG Three to six days. WHEN TO GO The trail can be walked year-round, with the most popular times being March and April for cherry blossom season and October and November for autumn. Great Wall of China, China 2 The Made up of fortifications built from as early as 7BC to the 17th century, The Great Wall spans 20 000km. Seasonal soil erosion and exposure to wind and rain have seen at least 30% of the wall disappear. Add to this the impact of people: foot and motor vehicle traffic, urbanisation and visitors stealing bricks all contribute to the degradation. Best time to travel: Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November). Visa: You’ll need to apply for a visa online prior to travelling. Flight: Fly from Jo’burg to Beijing for around R12 000 on Emirates. The Wall is about a two-hour drive from Beijing.
Great Barrier Reef, Australia 3 The Off the coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is made up of 3 000 individual coral reefs. It’s the largest reef system in the world, teeming with vibrant marine life. Coral bleaching, caused by an increase in water temperatures, strips algae from the coral, which it uses to obtain its nutrients in order to stay alive. This, in turn, reduces its vivid colour. Some fear that the Great Barrier Reef could disappear completely within three decades. Best time to travel: June to October: rainfall is unlikely, making it ideal to dive. Visa: Apply for a visa online prior to travelling. Flight: Fly with Emirates to Australia; flights start from R16 000.
The Eastern Cape boasts an array of small coastal towns, offering a pristine escape with unique features. St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis are home to the St Francis canal system (known as ‘Little Venice’), the largest man-made web of canals in the country. While this is a great place for a family holiday, it is heavily impacted by continuous coastal erosion and overdevelopment. Even though rock buffers and revetments separate the town from the open sea, waves continue to inch away at the beach as storm surges become stronger. Best time to travel: School holiday periods are busy but lively, and nothing beats summer by the sea. Flight: Fly to Port Elizabeth with Mango, from around R1 600; it will take about an hour by car to reach St Francis Bay.

Alpine Glaciers, Switzerland 4 The Glaciers form through years of snow thickened and compacted into ice masses. Each day glaciers are receding due to an increase in temperatures and declining snowfall. Locals have taken to covering glaciers with blankets to slow down the melting, but it’s not a permanent fix. Bringing large-scale pieces to life through drawing, painting and collage, Neo Matloga’s works play with surrealism and perspective to consider the healing properties of family and home. Just as his use of mixed media draws on fragments of different mediums, so his pieces reflect on the fragments of happiness amid the struggle against Apartheid.
Born in Limpopo, now based in Amsterdam, Matloga recently completed a two-year residency at De Ateliers and won the 2018 Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst (Royal Award for Modern Painting). STAR INGREDIENT: CHICKPEA FLOUR Za’atar chickpea pancakes with grilled avocado and coriander dressing

Not only is chickpea flour super easy to make (see tip, right) it’s packed with many benefits that other wheat flours lack, including containing more than double the amount of protein. It’s also naturally gluten-free.
Za’atar chickpea pancakes with grilled avocado and coriander dressing SERVES: 4–6 | PREP TIME: 45 MIN COOK TIME: 5-10 MIN • 230g (2 cups) chickpea flour • 60ml (¼ cup) olive oil, divided • 10ml (2 tsp) salt • 500ml (2 cups) water • 60ml (¼ cup) za’atar spice • 1 lemon, juiced • 30ml (2 tbsp) olive oil • 2 ripe avocados • 4 baby leeks, halved and rinsed CORIANDER DRESSING: • 30ml (2 tbsp) tahini • 30ml (2 tbsp) olive oil • 1 lemon, juiced • 30ml (2 tbsp) water • 1 clove garlic • 20g fresh coriander • ¼ tsp salt
TO SERVE (optional): • Roasted chickpeas • Chilli flakes • Micro herbs
To make the pancakes, combine the chickpea flour, half the oil, salt, water and za’atar spice in a large bowl and whisk until smooth. Set aside for 30 minutes. Mix the lemon juice and remaining olive oil. Peel and halve the avocado, removing the pit. Place a griddle pan over high heat. Brush the avocado with the lemon mixture and place in the pan as it starts to smoke. Grill for 3-4 minutes or until slightly charred. Take the avocados off the heat and brush with the lemon juice mixture and season well. Repeat the same process with the leeks. For the coriander dressing, blitz all the ingredients in a blender until smooth. To fry the pancakes, heat 5ml oil in a non-stick frying pan. Pour in the batter (about ¼ cup) and swirl the pan so it coats the base evenly. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until crispy. Repeat with the rest of the batter. To serve, top the pancakes with the avocado halves and leeks, drizzle with the coriander dressing and finish off with roasted chickpeas, chilli flakes and herbs.
CHICKPEA HACKS Make your own flour: Blitz dried chickpeas in a food processor until it has a fine texture. Ta-da! As an egg replacer: Mix 3 tbsp chickpea flour with 3 tbsp water to make a paste and add it to pancakes or muffins (use in recipes where eggs are used as binders).
STAR INGREDIENT: QUINOA Quinoa’s popularity isn’t only attributed to its nutty flavour, but also because it’s a complete protein – meaning it contains all 9 essential amino acids. It’s also low GI and naturally gluten free, with high levels of iron and magnesium.
Smoky quinoa and mushroom ‘meatball’ curry SERVES: 4-6 | PREP TIME: 45 MIN | COOK TIME: 25-30 MIN ‘MEATBALLS’: • 250g (3 cups) portobello mushrooms, sliced • 30ml (2 tbsp) ground flaxseed or 2 vegan eggs • 1 x 400g tin cannellini beans, drained and rinsed • 60g (¼ cup) quinoa, cooked • 2 leeks, finely chopped and rinsed • 2 cloves garlic, finely grated • 60ml (¼ cup) rolled oats • 10ml (2 tsp) nutritional yeast • 10g mint, finely chopped • 10g parsley, finely chopped • 5ml (1 tsp) sea salt • 90g (¾ cup) chickpea flour • ½ lemon, juiced • Olive oil to drizzle CURRY: • 2 onions, finely sliced • 10cm piece ginger, grated • 2 serrano chillies, deseeded and thinly sliced • 4 garlic cloves, finely grated • 10ml (2 tsp) ground turmeric • 2 x 400g tin coconut milk • 10ml (2 tsp) liquid smoke
Place a large frying pan over high heat and drizzle with olive oil. Sauté the sliced mushrooms for 5 minutes or until cooked. Season well and set aside. Make the flaxseed eggs by whisking 2 tbsp of ground flaxseed with 6 tbsp of water, or make a vegan egg according to package instructions. Place all the ingredients in a food processor and pulse ⅔ of the mix until just combined, and roughly chop the rest of the mix. Combine them and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Using a tablespoon as a measure, roll the mix in your hands and shape into balls. Wipe out the pan you used for the mushrooms and drizzle with more olive oil, place over a medium-high heat and fry the quinoa balls until crispy on both sides, about 3 minutes each side. Season well and set aside. CURRY: Place a large pot over medium-high heat, drizzle with olive oil and sauté the onion until soft. Lower the heat and stir in the ginger, chilli, garlic and turmeric. Stir for 5 minutes before adding in coconut milk and ½ cup water. Cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened. Stir in the liquid smoke and season. Over a low heat, add the quinoa balls and cook for 5 minutes. Serve with warm rice, fresh coriander, a dollop of yoghurt and lime wedges. AUTUMN 2020 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

Vegan nachos with bean ‘chilli con carne’ SERVES: 4-6 | PREP: 15 MIN | COOK TIME: 2 HOURS 15 MIN • 1½ cups red kidney beans, soaked overnight • 1L water • Olive oil • 1 onion, rinsed and roughly chopped • 2 cloves garlic, finely grated • 1 red serrano chilli, deseeded and sliced • 1 carrot, peeled and grated • 15ml (1 tbsp) sweet smoked paprika • 2 star anise • 5ml (1 tsp) Marmite • 5ml (1 tsp) Worcestershire sauce • 2 chipotle chillies in adobo sauce, chopped • 1 x 400g tin diced tomatoes • 100g sundried tomatoes, rehydrated • Sea salt and cracked black pepper, to taste • 30g fresh coriander • 15ml (1 tbsp) toasted cumin seeds, optional

Drizzle a generous amount of olive oil in a large pot and place over medium heat. Sauté the onion, garlic, serrano chilli and carrots until soft, about 10 minutes. Add the spices and cook for another 5 minutes or until fragrant. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, chipotle chillies, tinned tomato and sundried tomatoes along with the red kidney beans and 2 ½ cups of water. Stir and reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Leave to cook for 2 hours or until the beans are nice and tender. Season to taste, then tip into a serving bowl. Serve with nacho chips, avocado, vegan cheese, chillies and fresh coriander.
Penne pasta with pickled fennel, preserved lemon, garlic olive oil and ‘vegan Parmesan’ (nutritional yeast) SERVES: 4-6 | PREP: 35 MIN | COOK TIME: 10-15 MIN PICKLED FENNEL: • 200ml apple cider vinegar • 100g caster sugar • 5 pink peppercorns • 2-3 baby fennel bulbs, finely sliced GARLIC OLIVE OIL: • 250ml (1 cup) olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, sliced • 225g penne pasta, cooked • 1 preserved lemon, insides removed and finely chopped, or lemon zest • 100g nutritional yeast • 20g flat leaf parsley, finely chopped • Fresh shaved baby fennel
Heat the apple cider vinegar and sugar together in a small pot with a generous pinch of salt and the peppercorns. Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add the fennel and leave to cool in the fridge until ready to serve. Place the olive oil and garlic in a small pot and gently heat, then take off the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. To serve, combine the pasta, pickled fennel, preserved lemon and nutritional yeast. Generously drizzle with the oil, sprinkle with parsley and top with fresh shaved baby fennel.

STAR INGREDIENT: RED KIDNEY BEANS
This gets its name from the protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants it contains. Being particularly high in vitamin B12, it aids in preventing B12 deficiencies, especially in vegans. It is also naturally low in sodium and calories, fat-free, gluten-free and vegan. It has a cheesy flavour similar to parmesan.
Carrot and amaranth falafel with flaxseed hummus SERVES: 4-6 PREP: 15 MIN COOK TIME: 55 MIN FALAFEL: • 55g (¼ cup) amaranth • 5ml (1 tsp) salt • 250ml (1 cup) water • 2 carrots, finely grated • 10g (¼ cup) fresh mint • 10g (¼ cup) coriander • 15ml (1 tbsp) ground flaxseed or 1 vegan egg • 45ml (3 tbsp) water • 30ml (2 tbsp) olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, grated, divided • 5ml (1 tsp) ground cumin • 5ml (1 tsp) sea salt • 60g (½ cup) chickpea flour • 1 x 400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 1 leek or small onion, rinsed and finely chopped • 1 lemon, juiced • 2L cooking oil, for frying FLAXSEED HUMMUS: • 1 x 400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed, reserve 80ml (⅓ cup) of the liquid • 60ml (¼ cup) olive oil • 45ml (3 tbsp) ground flaxseed • 2 cloves garlic, finely grated • 2.5ml (½ tsp) ground cumin • 1 lemon, juiced • 2.5ml (½ tsp) salt
Combine the amaranth, salt and water in a small pot, place over a high heat and bring to the boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Allow to cook down to a thick porridge and remove from the heat. Make the flaxseed egg by whisking 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed with 3 tbsp of water, or make a vegan egg according to package instructions. In a food processor, combine the amaranth,

carrots, mint, coriander, flax egg, oil, garlic, cumin and sea salt (leave some to season). Blend until combined. Add in the chickpea flour, chickpeas and leeks, and pulse until just combined. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until firm. Meanwhile, place all the ingredients for the hummus in a food processor and blitz for 30 seconds or until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding the reserved chickpea liquid or water. Scrape the sides down and blend for
another 2 minutes, season well and refrigerate until serving. Preheat a large pot of oil or deep fat fryer to 160°C. Using a tablespoon to measure, roll balls of the falafel mix between wet hands and carefully drop them into the pre-heated oil. Fry for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towel. You might need to do this in batches until all the mix has been used. Serve with pita breads, chopped fresh coriander and cucumber ribbons.

Balancing act 5 Minutes with ballerina Irina Kolesnikova
Ballet has kept Irina Kolesnikova on her toes since the age of 10, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Ahead of her performance in St Petersburg Ballet Theatre’s staging of Swan Lake in South Africa, the award-winning ballerina, teacher, wife and mother shares the joys and challenges of her demanding profession.
“One of my earliest memories is attending a children’s gymnastics class. My teachers saw that I had an ear for music. They recommended that I audition for St Petersburg’s Vaganova Choreographic Institute, and I was accepted. So my decision was made at the age of 10, and I have never once regretted it.”

Usually a condition of employment of many employers to provide retirement benefits to employees. Pension/provident funds are sometimes slightly more cost-effective due to economy of scale.
Changing jobs makes no difference to your RA: it continues, unchanged.
With a pension/provident fund, you may need to transfer your accumulated fund value to a preservation fund or to your new employer’s fund.
A retirement annuity is similar to a pension fund in that you must use at least two-thirds of the fund to purchase an annuity when you retire. Unlike a pension/provident fund, you cannot cash in a retirement annuity before retirement (minimum age 55).
A maximum of 1/3 of the proceeds of a pension fund can be paid out as a lump sum; the rest must be used to provide you with an income during retirement.

CHANGING JOBS
Primarily designed to provide retirement benefits to selfemployed people, although anybody can contribute to a retirement annuity (RA) fund – even a person who belongs to their employer’s pension or provident fund or a person who has already retired. They typically offer much wider investment fund choice than pension/ provident funds.
PENSION FUND
A provident fund allows you to take all of the proceeds out as a lump sum at retirement.
All of them allow you to take a maximum tax deduction of 27.5% of total gross remuneration (subject to an annual ceiling of R350 000). They are all governed by the Pension Funds Act. The growth and income within all three is tax-free. Tax is only payable when you access your funds.
