location and our steadfast commitment to the mission of providing efficient and effective readiness and support to US and NATO forces, NAS Sigonella has long been known as “the Hub of the Med.” Recent events in North Africa are providing us all with a chance to do what we do best: provide support to ongoing humanitarian operations. The direction to provide this support is coming straight from the highest levels of the US government as the Department of Defense (DOD) has been directed to use military assets to assist in the international response to the crisis in Libya. As Sigonellans, we know that we are in a unique position to provide the necessary support functions required to ensure these critical humanitarian ef-

Recently, SECDEF Robert Gates ordered USAFRICOM to take the lead for all planning in support of the ongoing crisis. At the request of the Egyptian government, US military assets have already transported Egyptian nationals from Tunisia to Egypt. US military assets will also be used to provide humanitarian assistance, including the delivery of USAID supplies. This assistance will help slow the advance of the humanitarian crisis that is developing on Libya’s border, it will demonstrate the US commitment to aid those in need, and it will show our resolve to help the Egyptian people as they continue through a period of historic political transition. Our military forces will continue to work in close coordination with the Department of State,

USAID and other international organizations to support this important effort. Here in Sigonella, things remain very fluid and the support that we’ll be required to provide seems to change every minute. In fact, the only guarantee I can offer is that by the time this article hits the paper, the situation will have changed again. This will not be a time of normal operations. It is likely that all of you will notice new people, different aircraft, and possibly other military branches operating on our bases. I ask that each of you think through how you can play an active role in supporting in their presence here. While much of the actual operation may remain transparent to you, most will likely notice that the demand for things at the Commissary and NEX may
be higher and that some things may run out faster. As my Boss, RDML Gaiani recently advised me, so I now advise you: adopt a “Semper Gumby,” or “Always Flexible” attitude for the near future. Our flexibility will be key to our successful support of critical missions, as well as to our Community’s ability to support a rapid growth in our population. By most estimates, this operation will be a temporary effort to support the need for immediate humanitarian support in North Africa. It is unlikely that additional US military personnel will remain in our area for any other purpose. It will provide a unique opportunity for the base – and our people – to shine and show how well we can execute in a high-tempo environment that may test the
limits of our resources and creativity. I have absolutely no doubt that, at the conclusion of this operation, the rest of the world will know what I already do: that Sigonella has the best military, US and Italian civilians who, when called upon, provide world class service and support to our forces.

At times,
lockers were neglected and items were stored improperly on the work site, some of which resulted into a spill. With CHRIMP, FISC Sigonella restricted commands to have a maximum 30 day supply of hazardous materials in their lockers, efficiently managing the quantities dispersed around the base. From January 2010 to December 2010 the rate of hazardous materials dispersed around NAS Sigonella was reduced from 11% to 0.6% ensuring compliance with Environmental Final Governing Standards (FGS). “We maintain CHRIMP, continued on page 12

USS Bulkeley Frees Ship and Crew From Pirates From Combined Maritime Forces Public Affairs
MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) - A request for assistance from a Japanese-owned merchant vessel in the Somali Basin led to Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) warship USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) securing the release of the vessel and its 24 crew members from four suspected pirates, Mar. 6. At approximately 3 p.m. (Bahrain), Mar. 5, oil tanker MV Guanabara reported it was under attack when it was 328 nautical miles south east of Duqm, Oman. Bulkeley, assigned to CMF's counter-piracy mission Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 was directed to intercept Guanabara, supported by the Turkish warship TCG Giresun of NATO's counter-piracy Task Force 508. Following confirmation from Guanabara's master that the suspected pirates were aboard and his crew had taken refuge in the ship's 'citadel,' Bulkeley's specialist boarding team, supported overhead by its embarked SH-60 helicopter, secured the Bahamian-flagged vessel and detained four men. There was no exchange of fire at any time during the operation to release the MV Guanabara.
CMF's counter-piracy commander, Commodore Abdul Alheem said, "The ships and aircraft under my command have today scored a real and immediate victory through the disruption of a suspected act of piracy and the detention of individuals believed to be engaging in piracy. "Through our mutual cooperation and shared coordination, CTF 151 and our partner organizations has prevented the kidnapping of legitimate mariners who sought only to go peacefully about their business. Today, there will be a merchant ship sailing freely that would not be doing so were it not for the efforts of CTF-151." In accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolutions, and in cooperation with non-member forces, CMF's mission is to disrupt piracy and armed robbery at sea and to engage with regio-

Empower. Enrich. EDUCATE. The Elevator Speech is the Swiss Army Knife of Job-Search Tools Adapted from Katharine Hansen, PhD (Quintcareers.com)
Motta
By now the Elevator Speech is a fairly well-known tool, not only for job-seekers but for organizations and individuals with products and services to sell. Authors of numerous Internet articles on the Elevator Speech offer speculations on the origin of the term -- ranging from the notion that we often run into important people in elevators to the more common explanation that the Elevator Speech is a clear, concise bit of communication that can be delivered in the time it takes folks to ride from the top to the bottom of a building in an elevator. Whatever the exact origin, the Elevator Speech is an exceptionally useful and versatile tool in numerous situations: • Events designed specifically for networking. • The casual networking opportunities we encounter nearly every day -- the kids' soccer games, plane flights, waiting in line to buy
tickets, and on and on. • Career or job fairs. • Cold calls to employers. • Opportunities within your own company to talk with higher-up honchos, let them know you're doing a great job, and position you for promotion. • Job interviews, where the Elevator Speech can provide the answer to at least two common interview queries: "Tell me about yourself " and "Why should I hire you?" Wide variation exists among experts as to the ideal length of an Elevator Speech. Some authors say as few as 15 seconds; others say up to two minutes. There's no reason, however, that you can't employ both short and long versions. Different situations, after all, may well call for diverse approaches. The Sound Bite is equivalent to, let's say, an Elevator Speech for a lowrise building or a building with a very fast elevator. It's is a very short introduction of yourself used in situations where you are meeting a lot of people and probably not spending a great deal of time
with any one of them. Events specifically designed for networking were made for the Sound Bite, which lasts about 15-30 seconds and may or may not be the prelude to a lengthier conversation. The trick is to make your Sound Bite so intriguing that people will want to spend more time talking with you. The Sound Bite also might be incorporated into an initial phone conversation with a prospective new member of your network. At its most basic level, the Sound Bite's structure is: Hi, my name is ___________. I'm in the _______________ field, and I'm looking to_______________. I have _________ years of experience as a_______. My education and training have prepared me for __________. In my work, I have__________. I firmly believe my skills and experience could benefit you (or your company) in the following ways __________. I am eager to _________. Beware of a Sound Bite/ElevaSPEECH, continued on page 13

Francofonte is mainly an agriculture center and produces citrus fruits, wheat and olives. The town takes its name from the homonymous castle, around which the medieval settlement was founded in the 14th century, under the Chiaramontes' dominion. Anyway, the first historical evidences of an inhabited settlement date back to the 2nd century AD: they talk about a city called Hydra, of Greek origin. In 1394 Berengario Cruyllas was entitled baron; from 1509 to 1532 it was Moncadas' property, and then it belonged to the Gravinas During the 14th and 15th centuries a popula-
tion decrease occurred, because of the agriculture crisis which stroke Sicily and the subsequent emigration to the nearby areas. An increase in population occurred after the earthquake in 1693. Among the most important monuments we mention the medieval castle, the former Palazzo del Marchese (18th century) and the Mother Church. An interesting story on Francofonte involves the nobleman Adinolfo Mortillaro, Castle of Gàdara's owner, who, having to leave for the Sicilian Vespers, left his beloved wife alone. The legend tells she died of a broken heart just after his departure (http://sicilia.indettaglio.it) For more information call the Francofonte Tourist Office at 095-7887111.
Two arrested for attempted extortion over quiz king's body, Duo not behind the of Bongiorno's remains, probe continues Story by ANSA
Novara - Two people have been arrested for trying to extort money from the family of Mike Bongiorno, police said Thursday, although the pair are not thought to have been behind the theft of Italy's muchloved quiz show king's body in January. The suspects, both Italian, allegedly attempted a fraudulent sting on Bongiorno's family, asking them for hundreds of thousands of euros for the presenter's body, judicial sources said. This even though they did not have it and apparently had nothing to do with its theft. Bongiorno's body was taken from his tomb on Lake Maggiore on the night of January 24-25, 16 months after he was buried there. The perpetrators of the crime have yet not contacted the family to make a ransom request, with extortion seen as the only possible motive for a crime that has appalled the nation. ''The body has not yet been found and investigations are still taking place to identify the perpetrators of the theft,'' read a statement by Giulia Perrotti, chief prosecutor of the northern city of Verbania on the shore of Lake Maggiore.
Bongiorno, who was credited with bringing the quiz show to Italy in the 1950s and became one of the country's most popular entertainers, died of a heart attack on September 8, 2009 in Monte Carlo. After a pioneering career at state broadcaster RAI, Buongiorno became a stalwart on Premier Silvio Berlusconi's private Mediaset network, known for his trademark greeting 'Allegria!' (Cheers!). The entertainer was perhaps bestknown for RAI's 1955-1959 Lascia o Raddoppia, the Italian version of The $64,000 Question, which became one of the most popular Italian shows ever. But he set a record with Rischiatutto from 1970-'74, a version of Jeopardy!, attracting a never-equalled 20-30 million viewers every Thursday night. Starting in 1963, Buongiorno hosted 11 editions of the Sanremo song festival. He moved to the fledgling Berlusconi network in 1980 and played a key role in its success with a string of shows culminating in La Ruota della Fortuna (Wheel of Fortune) from 1989 to 2003. Just before his death Sky Italia, owned by Berlusconi's domestic rival Rupert Murdoch, began an ad
blitz for Buongiorno's upcoming return, a show called Riskytutto modeled on his old hit and billed as ''The quiz to beat all quizzes''. Buongiorno was born in New York on May 26, 1924 but soon returned to his mother's native Turin and was used during the Second World War as a courier between the Allies and the Resistance. Captured and set to be shot, he was spared when the Gestapo found his US papers but sent to concentration camps including Matthausen. He returned to New York to work briefly on an Italo-American radio show before arriving in Italy in 1953 to propose US-style entertainment to RAI. His impact on Italian popular culture was explored by semiotician and philosopher Umberto Eco, author of worldwide bestseller the Name of the Rose, in a famous 1963 essay called The Phenomonology of Mike Buongiorno. He himself received an honorary degree from a Milan university in 2007. Buongiorno had been in virtual retirement after his Mediaset contract lapsed, apart from popular mobile phone ads with comedian Fiorello, more than half his age. Berlusconi denied he had fallen out with Buongiorno over the contract
renewal, saying it was ''a misunderstanding with some people at Mediaset''. The premier said Buongiorno had
one remaining dream, to become a Senator, and ''I had started working on (this)''.

Saviano gets mozzarella for life, 'Gomorra' writer named cheese top reason for living in new book
Michelangelo's David 'threatened' by highspeed train, Florence statue could 'collapse' due to tunneling vibrations
Story by ANSA
Rome - Anti-mafia writer Roberto Saviano got a free life's supply of buffalo mozzarella last Tuesday after he put it at the top of his reasons for living in a new book out this week. "We're pleased and proud to have Saviano among our best and most passionate consumers," said the head of the Mozzarella di Bufala di Campania consortium, Luigi Chianese, as he announced the gift for the award-winning 31-yearold 'Gomorra' writer, who is under round-the-clock police protection after death threats from Neapolitan Camorra godfathers. "This unexpected declaration of love for one of Campania's iconic products spurs us to keep upholding Italy's name through the quality of our cheese," Chianese said. Saviano, a Campania native whose debut work revealed the sinister world of the Camorra to the international public, has based his eagerly anticipated latest book, Vieni Via Con Me (Come Away with Me), on monologues on organized crime he gave on a recent hit TV show of the same name on state broadcaster RAI. ''I'm very happy that the stories from Vieni Via Con Me are becoming a book because it wasn't easy to take them to the wider public,'' said Saviano last

month. ''First they tried to silence the stories, threatening not to screen them, then they attacked them, then they tried to have them forgotten as soon as possible. ''Publication will protect them and make them accessible to anyone''. Publishing house Feltrinelli said the monologues have been ''enriched and reworked'' for the print version. Feltrinelli is a big rival of Mondadori, the publishing house controlled by Premier Silvio Berlusconi's holding company that had published Saviano's two previous major works - Gomorra, the international bestseller that was made into an award-winning film, and Beauty and the Inferno, a collection of essays that was awarded the European Book Prize in
December. The announcement of the Feltrinelli deal was initially seen as a sign by some that Saviano had left Mondadori following a row with Chairman Marina Berlusconi, the premier's daughter, but Italy's biggest publisher issued a statement saying it still considers him one of its writers. Among Saviano's other reasons for living, listed in the introduction to Vieni Via Con Me, are: "taking the one you love to Raphael's tomb (in the Pantheon in Rome) and reading them the Latin inscription many ignore"; Diego Maradona's 2-0 goal against England in the 1986 World Cup; and "dreaming of going home after being forced to stay away for a long, long time".
(ANSA) - Florence - Michelangelo's David could be toppled by reverberations from work on a new Italian highspeed train line, an expert has warned. The famous statue, said underground architect Fernando De Simone, could "collapse" because of tremors emanating from tunnel excavation. "In Florence, tunnels will pass about 600 meters from Michelangelo's statue of David, the ankles of which, it is well known, are riddled with micro-fissures. "If the statue is not move before digging begins, it will collapse," he claimed. David from its current location at the Galleria dell'Accademia to an underground museum he says should be built. "There is a high probability of (the statue's) collapse," De Simone explained. "The risk of collapse or slippage in the marble of the statue's lower joints will be very high if the resonance caused by excavation machinery for the high-speed train tunnel, as well as the vibrations of passing trains thereafter, are added to existing vibrations caused by groups of 60 visitors at a time...and oscillations generated by automobile traffic in surrounding zones". De Simone added "it would be preferable to move the statue to a purposebuilt museum, which would also protect it in case of an earthquake, and would allow visitors to see it from multiple points of view: ascending, descending, and from a spiral perspective, as Michelangelo wished and as (art critic and historian) Carlo Ludovico Raggianti amply demonstrated". Michelangelo's masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture depicts the Biblical hero David. The marble male nude stands just over five meters tall, and was created between 1501 and 1504. Originally positioned in a public square outside the Palazzo della Signoria, it was moved to the Accademia Gallery in 1873, and a replica placed in the square.

Usually more interested in quality, Italy is focusing on quantity and landing several Guinness World Records along the way. First came the world’s largest gelato, and then a 660 meter torrone. Now, the world’s largest bottle of wine has been entered into the record books. The 2.6 meter bottle is 80 centimeters in diameter and holds the 510 liters of wine. The world’s largest bottle of vino is in Dolegna del Collio, and so appropriately filled with Friulano Doc Collio

Rick and Fred are best friends who have a lot in common, including the fact that they have each been married for many years. But when the two men begin to show signs of restlessness at home, their wives take a bold approach to revitalizing their marriages: granting them a "hall pass," one week of freedom to do whatever they want... no questions asked. At first, it sounds like a dream come true for Rick and Fred. But it isn't long before they discover that their expectations of the single life--and themselves-are completely, and hilariously, out of sync with reality. (105 min.) SEASON OF THE WITCH- Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman, Stephen Campbell, Claire Foy, Ulrich Thomsen A medieval knight undertakes a mission pitting him against a devious witch and making him the last hope for the world against an ancient and dark force. His faith broken by years of battle as a crusader, Behmen returns to central Europe to find his homeland decimated by the Black Plague. While searching for food and supplies at the Palace at Marburg, Behmen and his trusted companion, Felson are apprehended and ordered by the dying Cardinal to deliver a young peasant girl - believed to be the witch responsible for the Plague - to a remote abbey where her powers can be destroyed. Behmen agrees to the assignment but only if the peasant girl is granted a fair trial. As he and five others set off on this dangerous journey, they realize with mounting dread that the cunning girl is no ordinary human, and that their mission will pit them against an evil that even in these dark times they never could have imagined. (95 min.) THE FIGHTER- Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melisa Leo, Amy Adams, Jack McGee
Life story of boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward and his trainer brother Dick Eklund, chronicling the brothers' early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Massachusetts through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship in London. Soon after a rising young singer-songwriter gets involved with a fallen, emotionally unstable country star, the pair embarks on a career resurrection tour helmed by her husband/manager and featuring a beauty-queen-turned-singer. Between concerts, romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all. (117 min.) NO STRINGS ATTACHED- Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, Gretta Gerwig, Kevin Kline, Ophelia Lovibond
Emma and Adam are life-long friends who almost ruin everything by having sex one morning. In order to protect their friendship, they make a pact to keep their relationship strictly "no strings attached." "No strings" means no jealousy, no expectations, no fighting, no flowers, no baby voices. It means they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, in whatever public place they want, as long as they don't fall in love. The question becomes -- who's going to fall first? And can their friendship survive? (110 min.) Movie schedule is subject to change. Please call to confirm. Movie Hotline: 624-4248

EFMP, continued from page 1 res up-to-date enrollment information and extensive coordination among the personnel, medical, and educational communities. EFMP enrollment is mandatory and required immediately upon identification of a special need. DD Form 2792, Exceptional Family Member Medical and Educational Summary and DD Form 2792-1, Exceptional Family Member Special Education/Early Intervention Summary are used for enrollment. Sailors may be reluctant to enroll because of misconceptions that EFMP enrollment may limit assignments and career advancement, or preclude family members from accompanying sponsors on overseas tours. These negative perceptions are not supported by fact. Sailors enrolled in the EFMP have always received equal consideration for accompanied assignments and for promotions. The solo reason for this program is to ensure that our sailors with exceptional family members be given preference to duty stations in areas that can support their family members needs while furthering Navy careers. For any further questions please contact your Sigonella EFMP Coordinator LTJG Santinoceto at joseph.santinoceto@med.nav y.mil. NMCRS, continued from page 1 it’s always been about support for our Sailors, Marines, and their families. I think that the importance of today’s kick-off was that it gives us an opportunity to continue to support the Sailors and Marines on the base.” Scott said she is hoping the events over the course of March will help set a great pace for the campaign the rest of the physical year. Some of the events consist of weekly raffles and donations for many off-base locations such as restaurants, hotels, spas, souvenir shops, car rentals and travel agencies. Other base events include car food sales, car washes, a “Jail and Bail” event, and to finish it all off, U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella will host the Active Duty Fund Drive Fashion Show. “I think that anyone can help and having these events will make it easier to get the word out to our members in the Sigonella community,” Scott said. “I’m looking for-

ward to the annual Radiothon hosted by AFN where you can call in a song of your choice for a pledge or have the opportunity to bump songs for a larger donation. It should be a lot of fun and all of these events are keys to our success this month.” Scott said she is very excited for the ADFD to begin and hopes that the NMCRS will continue its success at Sigonella. “We’re trying to bring the financial support we need to continue our goal of helping our Sailors and Marines here at Sigonella,” Scott said. “I think that community support is the best way to accomplish
our goals and help out our service members. One of the most important things for service members to know is that 100 percent of the money they contribute will go back to the community. We appreciate all the support we get throughout these campaigns and sometimes when service members see their leaders participating in events like this one, they follow suit and that equals more financial support to the Sigonella community.” For more information on donations, upcoming events and other information about the NMCRS, contact the NMCRS office at 624-4212.
communication between the HAZMINCEN and all of our customers,” said LS2 Washington, HAZMINCEN LPO. “Plus, we order and issue products, store the materials, and ensure that only items on a command's authorized use list are issued and proper Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) is going along with the material," he added. Since the implementation of CHRIMP at NAS Sigonella, the rate of misplaced and sometimes unauthorized use of hazardous materials dispersed around the base has been reduced. “We put a lot
of hard work, but at the end of the day a lot of our success comes from our customers complying with the rules and doing what we of ask them” said LS2 Aranez. “We just want to keep our shipmates safe and keep Sigonella a safe working environment for all personnel.” The centralization of the control of all HAZMAT inventories works! a different costume or outfit that was themed based on some of Dr. Seuss’s popular books, like the Cat from “The Cat in the Hat” or Horton from “Horton Hears A Who.” Students also carried with them their favorite Dr. Seuss books and most students displayed posters and signs with creative pictures and slogans that positively influence everyone to read. "One of our school improvement goals is to improve student writing across the curriculum," said Sallie Davis, the Continuous School Improvement Chairperson at Stephen Decatur Elementary School. "By exposing our students to excellent literature and different creative writing styles, we broaden their horizons and open them up to the world of writing. Read Across America week is one of the highlights of the school year for our students. They love the opportunity to be expressive and learn in a fun and creative way." NAS Sigonella's Commanding Officer, Capt. Scott Butler was also pre-
sent for the occasion, leading the students in singing "Happy Birthday" to Dr. Seuss and marching along with the children at the head of the parade. The parade, which followed Monday's kickoff to Read Across America, was only one of the many events this week that was planned by the school staff to encourage young children everywhere to pick up their favorite books and read more often. The National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America takes place each year on or around Mar. 2 to honor and celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This month’s celebration marked the 14th year for Read Across America, originally launched as a way to get children excited about reading. Now 14 years later Read Across America is celebrated in nearly every school across the country. For more information on how you can help with NEA’s goals of exiting children about reading, visit www.nea.org.

SPEECH, continued from page 5
tor Speech that inspires the thought "so what?" in the listener. If, however, you add an element of intrigue -- a "hook" - by incorporating your Unique Selling Proposition, the ensuing conversation now has considerable potential. Let's look, for example, at how a conversation might go that starts with an intriguing Sound Bite: Networker #1: Hi, my name is Betty Joiner. I'm responsible for this country's future. Networker #2: This I've got to hear about. Networker #1: I'm a teacher! I love shaping the minds of the next generation, but I'm also interested in getting into corporate training. The concern, of course, with the intriguing sound bite is that you'll sound corny or hokey. And, in fact, chances are you will. But they work by hooking your conversation partner into finding out more about you. You just have to decide whether or not you're comfortable with incorporating an intriguing line into your Sound Bite. If not, go for a more basic Sound Bite/Elevator Speech. One way to test the effect is to try both approaches out on members of your inner circle. For information on mastering your Elevator Speech speak with your Work and Family Life Educators at the Fleet and Family Support Center.
