Navy Exchange Sigonella (NEX), in conjunction with Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) celebrated the annual Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Select Family Night on Sept. 8, with a cookout, games and prizes. The event was held for the CPO selectees, their sponsors, and family members and began with a cookout behind the NEX. Following dinner, the NEX closed early and the selectees made their way inside for a series of games, including Navy Trivia, a special NEX scavenger hunt, and Beatles Rock Band performances. While some of the selectees participated in the games, sponsors and family members had the opportunity to shop in the store after hours with a special coupon book they received donated by vendors from NEX, MWR, DeCA, Beauty Shop and

National POW/MIA Recognition Day

Here are some of the most recent results of their work: Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Earl Hopper, who died in 1968; Army Private David Woodruff, captured in 1951 in Korea; and Army Air Forces Staff Sergeant Jimmie Doyle, who died in 1944 – all were returned to their families, this year, and buried with full military honors. This work continues. We do it mindful of what we owe POW/MIAs and their loved ones. And we do it in affirmation of our strongest belief as a people: that every life is precious.”
Today, Sept. 17, 2010, is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. It is a day that congress has set aside to honor those who remain missing in action from combat or were taken prisoner during a conflict in service to our country. As of 12 July 2010, there are 74,074 MIA from World War II, 8,025 MIA from the Korean War, 125 MIA from the Cold War, and 1,713 MIA from the Vietnam War. Here are some remarks given by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates at last year’s POW/MIA Recognition Day. “We pause today to remember, honor, and show solidarity with our troops who have been captured or gone missing in America’s wars – and to affirm that we will never forget our duty to bring them home.
