Erno Becomes Newest Commander of DLA Distribution Sigonella DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Cmdr. Vincent V. Erno relieved Capt. Pamela Dozier as commander of Defense Logistics Agency Distribution (DLA) Sigonella during a change of command ceremony May 23. The ceremony was officiated by DLA Europe and Africa commander Army Col. Theodore B. Shinkle.

Dozier, who took command in September 2015, led the distribution center during a critical time of exponential growth in the scope and velocity of DLA Distribution Sigonella’s operations.

DLA Distribution Sigonella operates the highest turnover of the Material Processing Centers (MPC) and during Dozier’s tenure over half of a million material movement transactions were either transshipped or processed through the MPC. Erno is a native of San Diego, California. He graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1999 with a Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration and Supply Chain Management in 2009 from the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, California as well as a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. He entered the U.S. Navy through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola FL, where he was commissioned an Ensign in November 1999.

tion, and a complete range of material packing and shipping services. Sigonella also provides expedited requisitioning and centralized receiving support to the military community throughout the Mediterranean.

NATO Forces Fuel Coupons: Explaining Your Tax-Free Benefit

Automotive fuel (gasoline and diesel) and motor oil are made available to Department of Defense (DoD) personnel in Italy on a taxfree basis at a substantial discount over local market prices. The purchase of fuel & oil using tax-free coupons helps make fuel prices here comparable to those in the United States.

The NATO Forces petroleum product (POL) coupons, valid from Oct 1, 2017 through Sept 30, 2018, are currently on sale at Navy Exchange (NEX), Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), and NATO Morale & Welfare Activity (MWA) outlets throughout Italy.

The new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) coupons valid from Oct 1, 2017 can also be purchased through NEX, AAFES, and NATO MWA outlets.

NATO Forces tax-free fuel coupons must be utilized at authorized AGIP/ENI gas stations and LPG coupons must be used at AGIPGAS/ENIGAS dealers. A list of all

authorized gas stations and LPG dealers has been provided to retail sales outlets. It is recommended that eligible personnel ask the gas station if they accept fuel coupons prior to fueling their vehicle. Authorized gas stations are required to accept fuel coupons, but there are occasions where AGIP/ENI gas station attendants have refused to accept NATO Forces coupons. In the event that authorized AGIP/ENI dealers refuse to accept valid NATO Forces coupons, personnel should contact the CNREURAFSWA Foreign Tax Relief Program Office.

If fuel has already been pumped, a valid receipt along with the name and address of the gas station and the fuel coupons that were not accepted must be provided to the CNREURAFSWA Foreign Tax Relief Program Office as they will request reimbursement from ENI on behalf of the customer. When requested, customers are required to show AGIP/ENI gas station attendants appropriate NATO identification.

Also, if a gas station attendant asks you to sell or trade your fuel coupons, please report it as soon as possible to the CNREURAFSWA

Foreign Tax Relief Program Office.

Customers are reminded of the following tax-free petroleum product regulations: - The ration amount and fuel type depend on the primary registered vehicle’s engine size, engine base horsepower and fuel requirement. Your monthly tax-free fuel authorization ranges from 100 liters to 400 liters maximum for automobiles while rations for motorcycles may not exceed 200 liters. For most customers, your tax-free fuel ration will accommodate your transportation needs.

- The fuel coupons are required to be filled out by the eligible member for them to be valid. Coupons must include signature, plate number and date. Failure to complete a fuel coupon with all the details is considered misuse of the tax-free coupons, and the eligible member will be requested to provide a justification as to why the coupon was not completely filled in. It is important that the coupons are filled out at the gas station once the vehicle has been fueled, as the coupons must reflect the date they were utilized.

- The exact quantity in fuel coupons must correspond to the exact number of liters issued at the gas station. To facilitate this process, 1-liter and 2-liter coupons have been printed and are included in both 100-liter and 200-liter booklets. Also make sure that if you request a specific amount of liters, the gas station attendant fuels your vehicle for that amount of liters and not euros. Once you leave the gas station and you realize that the gas gauge doesn’t reflect the quantity you requested, it is usually too late to resolve.

- Selling, bartering, lending or giving coupons or the product itself to any person, or buying or borrowing from any person, is prohibited.

The illegal use of tax-free fuel coupons is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and Italian law and may result in both the loss of an offender’s privilege to purchase tax-free fuel & oil and face legal penalties.

Our Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Sigonella enterprise stretches across Europe and Africa with sites in Naples and Sigonella, Italy; Souda Bay, Greece; Djibouti, Africa; Rota, Spain; Deveselu, Romania; and Redzikowo, Poland.

Our team of outstanding military, host nation civilian, and U.S. civilian personnel conduct more than 400 port visits each year, resupplying ships and submarines with fuel, provisions, cargo, lube oil, hazardous materials, mail, and more to support their deployment.

While you’ve probably seen us at the Fleet Mail Center or know us as the team who manages your PCS, NAVSUP FLC Sigonella’s primary mission is to deliver combat capability through logistics to the Navy, Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, as well as Joint and Allied forc-

Interactive Customer Evaluation Comment regarding “Marinai IP Addresses”:

Good afternoon. I would like to address an ongoing problem with the internet provider, there is constantly an issue accessing Hulu because the ISP is consistently updating or changing the IP address. This causes our computers to register with Hulu as being in a country outside of the U.S. where their services are not offered. Upon contacting Hulu, they request that the ISP work with them to provide IP addresses so that the paying customers do not lose service.

Considering customers pay for this service to watch shows we normally do not get through AFN, it is frustrating that we can go for weeks or months on end without resolution. Is this something that can be coordinated so we can access services we pay for without interruption? Thank you for your time and assistance.

Thank You for your comment regarding the ability to stream Hulu in base housing. In 2016 we sent letters to both Hulu and Netflix designating all base housing as being within the US in regards to geographical limits for their service. There have been isolated instances where patrons have issues streaming this content. We reached out to Telecom Italia, and have a list of the IP addresses for base housing, which are static and do not change. Please verify that your IP address matches one of the below. If it does not, please call the Sigonella Internet Help Desk at 095-784-9191 and a technician can assess the issue you may be experiencing. The IP addresses are as follows:

Comment regarding inappropriate conduct by NEX employee:

My complaint is with the NAS 2 Mini-mart. On an afternoon in early May , a cashier made an inappropriate comment as I walked up to the counter. I don’t think he thought I heard him, but I did and I doubt I misheard it. The comment was clear, I felt very uncomfortable. I wish I could say it was miscommunication or misunderstanding but it’s hard to misconstrue such a comment.

I suggest that training is conducted with these employees and that they are reminded that such comments are inappropriate.

Name: Yeoman 2nd Class Kenny Mills Hometown: Waycross, Georgia Department: Admin The modern world runs on paperwork. Without paperwork, the Navy, and more specifically Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella wouldn’t be able to effectively continue its mission. Yeoman 2nd Class Kenny Mills is one of those Sailors that ensures all paperwork submitted to and from the offices of the commanding officer, executive officer, and command master chief is correct.

“I’m the correspondence supervisor; any designations that come through, authorizations, instructions – basically any paperwork that the triad needs to see and sign, I ensure that paperwork is in order,” said Mills.

“I like being able to interact with a lot of different people from different commands and all of the Sailors I work with.”

On top of his regular duties, Mills is an active member of the Second Class Petty Officers’ Association, participating in events like the barracks clean up and the Sigonella Elementary School’s field day community relations project.

“I like volunteering and being able to help people do something they can’t normally do or need help doing,” said Mills. “It’s a good way to network and meet new people and it’s also a nice change of pace to the daily office work I normally see.”

When Mills isn’t in the office or out volunteering, he can be found at the

gym working out or playing basketball.

“Basketball is my way of getting cardio because I don’t like running,” said Mills. “I just love the sport and I’ve been playing since I was a little kid.”

In fact, Mills is a big sports fan. With his favorite teams being the Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Falcons, it’s no surprise his home state is Georgia.

Mills checked onboard NAS Sigonella about two months ago and has enjoyed his time so far in the Hub of

the Med. His favorite part about living abroad has been experiencing the differences in American and Sicilian culture.

“It allows you to get out of your comfort zone and broadens your mindset,” said Mills. “Everyday things that you might be used to back in the States aren’t here in Italy, so it makes you thankful for those things and also opens your eyes to other things we don’t have but they do.”

Suspicious Packages: What to Do

The term “suspicious package” is a generic phrase used to describe a number of different objects that are accompanied by unusual characteristics. Suspicious packages could be letters, boxes, backpacks, or luggage, and can present an explosive, chemical, or biological threat. U.S. federal agencies have identified a number of characteristics that have been common to past incidents involving suspicious packages: • An article may be unattended or arrive unexpectedly.

• An article may have protruding wires, aluminum foil, a powder-like substance, or oil stains, and may emit a peculiar odor or sound.

• Mail bombs may have excessive postage or use foreign postage.

• The return address may be fictitious or non-existent.

• The postmark may show a different location than the return address.

• Mail bombs may bear restrictive endorsements, such as “Personal” or “Private.”

• Mail bombs may display misspelled words, incorrect titles, and poor or distorted handwriting, or the name and address may be prepared with homemade labels or cut-andpaste lettering.

• Parcel bombs may be unprofessionally wrapped with several combinations of tape or string used to secure the package and may be endorsed “Fragile—Handle With Care” or “Rush—Do Not Delay.”

• Letter bombs may feel rigid or appear uneven or lopsided.

• Package bombs may have an irregular shape, soft spot, or bulges.

Identifying a suspicious package is the first step in responding to a possible threat. If you notice or come in contact with a suspicious package, you should warn others close-by, while also quickly evacuating the immediate area. Before using a cell phone, it is important that you are at least 25 feet away from the suspicious object. If the package contains an explosive device, the transmission from your cell phone could unintentionally trigger an explosion. When safe to do so, have yourself or a bystander dial 095-86-1911, or DSN 624-1911, to reach the Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Emergency Dispatch Center and report what you have found. The emergency dispatcher will assist with the situation while also alerting emergency services to your location. It is important that you gather as many details as possible, as the dispatcher will ask you to describe the suspicious package: What is your exact location? Did you see anyone drop or deliver the package? Describe the person. What is the size of the article? Did it have any liquid, powder, or wires coming from it? Did you notice if it was making a hissing, ticking, or other strange sound?

If a package or other article seems out of place or strange to you, or you suspect a package or other article contains a threat: * Remain calm and listen to your intuition. Do not worry about embarrassment, if you are wrong, or overreacting. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

* DO NOT shake, open, touch, smell, or taste the package or any substances leaking from the article. * Immediately call 1-9-1-1. Use a land line if possible. * Notify your supervisor and others around you to evacuate the immediate area.

Isolate the suspected parcel. Raise the alarm and keep others away! * If in an airport or other passenger or freight terminal, notify any facility security personnel. * Shut off air conditioning units and fans that could circulate possible chemical, biological, or other hazards to other areas of the building. * If possible, open windows in the immediate area to assist in venting potentially harmful or explosive gases. * Evacuate the immediate area, but do not leave the vicinity altogether until you have spoken with law enforcement and they have cleared you to leave the area. * Pay attention to any emergency or mass notification messages that are put out by Giant Voice, Indoor Voice, email, text, or phone.

These alerts will contain instructions, indicating whether you should evacuate, shelter-inplace, or take other action. Follow-on messages will provide updates and alert you when the all clear has been given. * If you handled the suspicious article in any way, wash your hands with soap and water and notify emergency response personnel.

In this situation, your department or building Emergency Action Plan (EAP) should be activated. It is likely that a shelter-in-place or evacuation order would be directed for your building and the surrounding area. The EAP will identify any appropriate procedures and actions that can be implemented to mitigate any impacts to personnel and mission capabilities. It will also contain information such as the location of local emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and utility equipment cutoff switches. It is the responsibility of ALL HANDS onboard NAS Sigonella to be familiar with their respective EAPs and emergency procedures.

Incidents such as the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 and the Las Vegas concert shooting in 2017 illustrate the ever-increasing number of risks in our society and the possibility that these incidents can happen at any moment. NAS Sigonella has many security measures in place, meant to prevent and deter acts of violence and overall reduce the vulnerability of the installation. Although it is important to understand that anyone can contribute to increasing the safety and security of our base. It is imperative that everyone onboard remains vigilant and reports any suspect or unusual packages, objects, individuals, or occurrences to your chain of command or the NAS Sigonella Emergency Dispatch Center. NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella Hosts NAVSUP Headquarters’ Assistant Commander for Supply Chain Technology and System Integration

Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Sigonella hosted NAVSUP Headquarters’ Assistant Commander for Supply Chain Technology and System Integration, Mr. Kurt Wendelken, from May 6 through May 10 to conduct meetings with personnel and to analyze infrastructure and manning in the 6th Fleet area of operations (AOO).

A key component to Wendelken’s visit was meeting personnel in Rota, Spain, and in Sigonella, Italy. He met with senior base leadership at each site to better understand unique customs requirements, information systems and technology support, and foster relationships pertaining to delivering combat capability through logistics support.

Wendelken hosted town halls with military, U.S. civilian, and host national personnel in both Rota and Sigonella to discuss how NAVSUP is reforming to meet the fleet’s changing needs and ensure mission success. “NAVSUP aligns to our customers’ needs to enable warfighter mission accomplishment, side-by-side in the operational arena. That’s best seen here at the Fleet Logistics Center. You build a ready Fleet every day. Because of you, we get the right parts to the right customers at the right place and at the right time” said Wendelken.

Wendelken explained his role at headquarters and specifically communicated NAVSUP’s purpose as the Navy’s supply chain and logistics provider of choice.

“I’m here talking to customers, stakeholders, and support sites to gain a better understanding of how Naval Supply Systems Command can better support you—our ‘Face to the Fleet’,” he said.

“We are, without doubt, the Navy’s supply chain organization. It is known throughout the Department of Defense and the Department of the Navy that no one logistically supports the warfighter like NAVSUP. We see this in what our Fleet Logistics Centers do for the warfighter every day.

You are at the precipice of operational logistics, and the fleet couldn’t meet its mission without you.”

NAVSUP FLC Sigonella stands ready to fulfill logistic responsibilities and serves as a vital link to enable mission success across Europe and Africa. NAVSUP FLC Sigonella is one of eight fleet logistics centers under NAVSUP, which provides global logistics, business and support services to fleet, shore and industrial commands of the Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army and allied forces. After 80 days of talks between 5SM and League to form what they refer to as the «government of change», Italy’s president Sergio Mattarella rejected the nomination of Paolo Savona as economy minister, de facto putting an end to the not-even-born-yet Western Europe’s first populist coalition.

Savona, the lawyer-turned-premier chosen by Di Maio and Salvini stepped away on Sunday night after president Mattarella turned down his designated minister for the economy, because believed unsuitable for Italy’s present situation: 82-years-old-Savona, who actually had been a former industry minister for a democratic government, has expressed Eurosceptic positions, and president Mattarella, exercising a constitutional right, rejected his appointment causing an unhealable break away of the 2 major parties.

“The uncertainty about our position in the euro has alarmed Italian and foreign investors who have invested in our bonds and companies,” Mattarella said addressing the nation, and added, “This burns away resources and the savings of companies and prefigures risks for Italian families and citizens, including for mortgages.”

Mattarella’s word and action polarized the country even further: many believe Mattarella to be a savior, who protected the country and who applied the constitution to the letter, as - according to the Italian constitution - it is the President of the republic who appoints the ministers – previously nominated by the winning parties. However, many in Italy feel that the president deliberately made a political move, ignoring the People’s will, by not appointing the designated minister in a key government slot such as that for the economy based on the latter’s opinion. An “Eurosceptic” opinion, which is part of the core of the populist electoral basin.

Many now believe that “the sovereign people has been stepped on,” as the 5SM reiterates that “Savona calling for Italy to quit the euro” is the “biggest fake news in history.” The 82-year-old Economist repeated on Sunday, “I want a different Europe, one that is stronger but fairer. I believe in European political union.”

Among the 5SM there is talk of impeachment: “It is necessary to put the president under a state of accusation”, referring to article 90 of the Constitution which states that, “the President is not responsible for the actions performed in the exercise of his du-

Built on the ruins of an ancient temple, carved out of a lava stone cave, the church was founded in 262 AD and was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt with its last renovation accomplished in 1800. Some historians believe that the church’s underground tunnels were used as catacombs. In WW2, people sheltered inside the tunnels during air-raid alerts. Legend has it that the body of St. Agatha was buried there. Top-circulation Sicilian daily La Sicilia covered the event and quoted Father Antonio Di Maria as thanking the American volunteers for their efforts.

Trump Thanks Naval Academy Graduates for Commitment to Serve

Four years ago, the members of the U.S. Naval Academy's Class of 2018 chose the path of honor, courage and commitment to serve the nation and defend the American flag, President Donald J. Trump said during his graduation address in Annapolis, Maryland, May 25.

The class of 1,042 students also received their commissions today as ensigns in the Navy or as second lieutenants in the Marine Corps.

"You have earned your place in that ancient league of Sailors and shipmates, captains and commanders, warriors and mariners, and Marines," the president said. "America is in your heart, the ocean is in your soul and the salt water runs through your veins. The word 'impossible' does not exist."

The graduating class now comprises military leaders in the most powerful force on the face of the planet - the United States military, the president said.

Inheriting Legacies Each new officer inherits the legacies of the Navy heroes who came before them, Trump said, from a living history passed down from generation to generation. "Each of you will make your own mark on the Navy, the Marine Corps, the military and the history of our great nation," he said.

Among the Navy and Marine Corps graduates today will be 283 aviators, 134 submariners, 256 surface warfare officers, 70 restricted line officers and 15 explosive ordnance disposal officers.

The class also includes 236 U.S. Marines and 35 well-conditioned Navy SEALs, Trump noted.

The U.S. military is sharpening the fighting edge of everything, from Marine infantry squads to combat ships to deliver the maximum lethal force, the president said. "The enemy has to know we have that, and we are recommitting to this fundamental truth: we are a maritime nation," he added.

"And being a maritime nation, we're surrounded by sea. We must always dominate that sea, we will always dominate the oceans. We are showing what we can achieve when natural American confidence is backed by unrivaled American power and unquestioned American resolve," the president said.

Tip of the Spear "Together, you are the tip of the spear, the edge of the blade, and the front of the shield defending and protecting our great country," Trump told the class. "You know, there is no mission our pilots can't handle. There is no hill our Marines can't take, and there is no stronghold the SEALs can't breech.

Medal of Honor Recipient Master Chief Britt Slabinski Inducted into Pentagon Hall of Heroes

On May 25, Medal of Honor recipient retired Master Chief Petty Officer (SEAL), Britt Slabinski was inducted into the Pentagon Hall of Heroes during a ceremony held in the Pentagon auditorium.

President Donald J. Trump presented Slabinski the Medal of Honor during a White House ceremony the day before for his actions while leading a team under heavy effective enemy fire in an attempt to rescue teammate Petty Officer First Class Neil Roberts during Operation Anaconda in 2002.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick M. Shanahan, Under Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly, and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson spoke at the Pentagon event.

"We recognize Master Chief Slabinski and his career of selfless service that includes his 15 combat deployments for the Global War on Terror," said Shanahan. "We are here to honor the values represented by the medal he carries."

Modly also praised the courage of Slabinski for his actions in Afghanistan more than a decade ago.

"He represents the humility and quiet dignity of all SEALs, a warrior spirit of uncompromising integrity," added Richardson.

After their remarks, Slabinski was joined by his son Bryce, Shanahan, Modly, and Richardson for the presentation of a Medal of Honor Flag and a Hall of Heroes plaque.

Then, with family, friends, former teammates and top military leadership looking on, Slabinski took the podium and delivered his remarks.

"Nothing of consequence is ever accomplished alone. I didn't do anything special on that day in March 2002. I just did my job, but it was my teammates that were special," said Slabinski.

"They were with me that day, I was surrounded by special...and I trusted those around me. They gave me the confidence to accept the challenging task ahead."

Slabinski continued to reiterate how the award belonged to all the service members who were involved in the events that unfolded atop Takur Ghar, a 10,000-foot snow-covered mountain in Afghanistan."To my teammates who performed so many acts of courage that day that

have gone unrecognized, I say, 'I remember you.'"

The Hall of Heroes is dedicated to the more than 3,460 recipients of the Medal of Honor.

Along the walls of the room are the names of each recipient. All three versions of the medal - the Army, Sea Service (Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard), and Air Force - are displayed in the Hall of Heroes. An asterisk next to some names represents service members who received two Medals of Honor for separate acts of bravery. Dots are used to signify Marines who were under the command of the Army during WWI and received both the Army and Sea Service versions of the medal for a single act of bravery.

Slabinski's Medal of Honor is an upgrade of the Navy Cross that he was previously awarded for his actions. Former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter directed the military departments to review all Service Cross and Silver Star recommendations for actions since Sept. 11, 2001, to ensure service members who performed valorously were appropriately recognized.

Slabinski, a native of Northampton, Massachusetts, joined the Navy in September 1988. After graduating from Radioman Class "A" School in San Diego, he completed the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL course in January 1990.

He retired in June 2014 as the director of Naval Special Warfare Safety Assurance and Analysis Program after more than 25 years of service.

And so it is: we are back to the appointing of yet another technical or neutral government, a President’s government, back to a ferocious electoral campaign whose main topic will no longer focus on immigration issues but fully project against the technocrats, against the so called “strong powers,” with a good chance the antiestablishment movements will win (for real) the overall majority of the country. It’s going to be a hot Italian summer.

Italy brings Pakistani woman back after forced abortion Story by AP ROME - Italy’s foreign minister proudly announced the return to Italy on Thursday of a young Pakistani woman who was taken by her family to Pakistan to have an abortion against her will after she got pregnant by her Italian boyfriend.

The case of the woman, identified as Farah, attracted a lot of interest in Italy following the recent strangulation death in Pakistan of Sana Cheema, an Italian of Pakistani origin who police suspect was killed by her family because she refused an arranged marriage.

Farah, 19, didn’t have Italian citizenship, only a residency permit. Nevertheless, the foreign ministry activated Italy’s embassy in Islamabad after Verona authorities heard from Farah’s friends that she had been tricked into going home and was forced to have an abortion.

Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano tweeted Thursday that Farah was safely back in Italy, and he thanked Pakistani authorities who had removed Farah from her family’s Lahore-area home and brought her to the Italian embassy in Islamabad.

Alfano had previously said that Italy acted in Farah’s defense as a matter of respecting her human rights and “fundamental rights based on the equality of men and women.”

According to Italian news reports, Farah managed to sneak text and audio messages to her friends in Italy, recounting that her parents had tricked her into returning to Pakistan for her brother’s wedding and then forced her to abort her child. She wrote of being afraid for her life.

Once in the embassy, Italy arranged for Farah’s Pakistani passport to be renewed — her family had destroyed the one she traveled with — and issued her a visa to return to Italy.

Farah’s case prompted an outpouring of solidarity from Italian politicians from across the political spectrum eager to prevent a repetition of the Cheema case. Verona’s social services office, which had received complaints from Farah previously about her abusive father, guaranteed her needs will be met and safety ensured.

Left-leaning lawmaker Laura Boldrini, the former house speaker, praised Farah for raising her voice and “making us

understand that when a woman rebels against those who want to oppress her, she will never be left alone.”

Right-wing leader Giorgia Meloni, who has demanded a harsher crackdown on illegal immigrants, went so far as to call for Italy to grant Farah citizenship.

Mediterranean diet is falling out of favor with southern Europeans: Children in Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain are now the fattest on the continent Story by MailOnline It has been widely lauded as one of the healthiest ways to eat. But the Mediterranean diet is increasingly being shunned by southern Europe, even as other countries try to follow the region's lead.

It means children in Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain are now the fattest on the continent.

Researchers found in these countries more than four in ten primary school kids were overweight or obese.

This compares with around one in three for primary school children in the UK. Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) found that today youngsters in Sweden were much more likely to be following the Mediterranean diet than their counterparts in Italy or Greece.

Dr Joao Breda, who is the head of the European office for prevention and control of non-communicable diseases at WHO, said, “The Mediterranean diet for children in these countries is gone.”

“In southern Europe, kids are really far from that – and those closer to the Med diet were Swedish kids.” He blamed inactivity and junk food for fuelling obesity in southern Europe, saying children were snacking more but doing little exercise.

There is growing evidence that a Mediterranean diet – one that is high in fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains, olive oil and fish – can help to ward off heart problems and also lower the risk of cancer.

More recent studies have also found that it could also cut the chance of dementia and may also protect against age-related macular degeneration, which causes blurred vision.

The latest data from 2015 to 2017 looked at the height and weight of children, aged from seven to nine years old, in 38 countries.

The research found that in Italy, Cyprus, Spain, Malta, Greece and San Marino, one in five boys were obese.

France, Norway, Ireland, Denmark and Latvia were among the countries with the lowest rates, at between 5 and 9 per cent for both sexes.

Children in these countries ate more fruit and vegetables, and less high fat foods such as pizza, chips, sausages and burgers, consuming them either never or just one to three times a week.

Worryingly, most parents of obese children thought that their youngsters were either slightly overweight or normal, when asked.

Dr Breda added: “It is crucial to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables in children, while reducing their intake of sweets and particularly sugary soft drinks.”

“It is also very important to increase the awareness of parents and families to the problem of child obesity, given that out data shows that many mothers do not recognize their children as overweight or obese.”
