Direct LiNe I hope everyone enjoyed Veteran’s Day and the extended weekend. I appreciate the sacrifices of those who served before us, those who currently serve and our military families. Thank you Sigonella for your service. NAS Sigonella Safety Department coordinated this year’s Holiday Safety Standdown. There was useful information for everyone that will help make our holiday season safe. I am grateful for the questions we receive during Feedback Live. I want to make sure that we answer all your questions and concerns, so I’ll answer a few more of them in this Direct Line. If your question didn’t make it in this edition, please look for those on the official NAS Sigonella Facebook page in the coming days; the next edition of The Signature will be 2 December. The next Feedback Live will be 5 January. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday. Q1. I love the fact that Sig is so proactive when it comes to put-

ting on events. However, I'm finding it hard to find the logic behind closing off three parking lots for five days. As an E4 with only three years in, I have to live in the barracks, I have no choice. So my question is: why would you close off all of the parking lots around the barracks for that extended length of time, without thought for the people that have to live there? I have had to park my car by the vet for the last two days. While there is closer parking in the NEX lot, it the signs specifically say no overnight parking. I don't need the grief of a parking ticket. So, because I choose not to be a dirt bag, I honestly feel like I'm being punished. A1. We understand that parking can get frustrating when there is a festival. When the entire Midtown area was designed many years ago, they designed the parking lots to be large and open (no trees or dividing strips in the middle) and they built specialized electrical stations. This is why the festivals are in those locations. This also allows us to increase the area for the carnival rides and the Kid's Fun Zone by using the CDC and ITT Par-

king Lots. It also keeps everything within close proximity. Although the lots must be closed to allow for set up, we do our best to keep it to a minimum. Q2. Capt Butler I am always wondering about Subway on NAS II. Why are they always out of things that NAS I Sub Way is never out of? On most occasions, they are out of veggies (banana peppers, olives, jalapenos...etc). How can one location have all the items but the other does not? And, will the NAS II location ever get power to actually toast a sandwich rather than microwave it? Thank you in advance. A2. This is the first we have heard of this problem and are taking measures to address this issue. Both locations are indeed operated by the same contractor so they should always be in stock of like items, ensuring that customers receive the best service possible. With regards to having a toaster in Subway NAS 2, the contractor had purchased one back in 2009 but due to power supply capability of the building, the wiring will not support a toaster and it is cost prohibitive to install

CFC Committee Conducts ‘Jail ‘N Bail’ Fundraiser By: MCSA Brian Glunt NPASE SIGONELLA, Sicily – Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella’s Combined Federal Campaign - Overseas (CFC-O) committee conducted a “Jail ‘N Bail” and barbecue fundraiser here, Nov. 10, at the NAS II gate. The event was coordinated by the CFC-O committee to raise money for the family support and youth programs (FSYP). Any personnel stationed at NAS Sigonella could donate any amount of money to the CFC-O to have someone they know put in handcuffs and taken to sit in a sheltered cell located near the NAS II entrance. “Basically you are going to pay a dollar a minute to have someone thrown in jail,” said Information Systems Technician 1st Class (SW) Irene Long, Sigonella’s CFC-O fundraising coordinator.

“They actually get picked up by security, arrested, and put in our jail in the NAS II loop.” NAS Sigonella personnel were also able to donate to the CFC-O by purchasing freshly made cheeseburgers, hot dogs and other barbecue refreshments. “Events like this one are important because of the camaraderie. It brings everyone together,” said Lt. Tim Page, CFC-O community/area project officer. “It gives people another alternative to donate to the CFC rather than through the traditional direct deposit. It also gives them another avenue to donate money to a the FSYP” According to the CFC-O website, the mission of the CFC-O is to support and promote philanthropy through a voluntary program that is employee-focu-

new wiring. Q3. Why can't policy be changed so that my immediate local national family members are able to get passes for the duration of my tour at Sigonella so that they are allowed to enter Marinai (only Marinai, with NAS 1 as an emergency only) without me having to sponsor them (I believe they are called no-escort flag passes)? Marinai is my home, and it just doesn't make any sense that I have to constantly sponsor my family to visit me at my home; at the very least my mother and father only. I have already tried getting these passes through security and have been told that it is not allowed, with one exception being that only my mother can get a no escort pass under the condition that she fills out special paperwork identifying her as a babysitter. A3. Thanks for your question. We have provisions in place to ensure the safety and security of our families in Marinai. If there are special circumstances requiring access for fa-

mily members or legal guardians, Security has longer-term passes available. Because of the safety and security concerns associated with Marinai MFH, additional information may be required to ensure proper verification of personnel prior to issuing or granting access. Keep the questions coming. I encourage you as well to let us know what you are doing to make Sigonella better.

Fire Safety for Thanksgiving Submitted by NASSIG Fire Department Turkey fryers, A popular tradition when preparing the Thanksgiving turkey. The National Fire Protection Association discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. These turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures, and units currently available for home use pose a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments, such as grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants for the preparation of the dish, or consider a new type of "oil-less" turkey fryer." During the frying process, hot oil may splash or spill at any point during cooking and any contact between hot oil and skin could result in serious injury. In addition, any contact between hot oil and nonmetallic materials could lead to serious da-

mage. A major spill of hot oil can occur with fryers designed for outdoor use and using a stand as these units are particularly vulnerable to upset or collapse, followed by a major spill of hot oil. Newer countertop units using a solid base appear to reduce this particular risk. Propane-fired turkey fryers are designed for outdoor use, particularly for Thanksgiving, by which time both rain and snow are common in many parts of the country. If rain or snow strikes exposed hot cooking oil, the result can be a splattering of the hot oil or a conversion of the rain or snow to steam, either of which can lead to burns. Use of propane-fired turkey fryers indoors to avoid bad weather is contrary to their design and dangerous in its own right. Also, moving an operating turkey fryer indoors to escape bad weather is extremely risky. Fires have occurred when turkey fryers were used in a garage or barn or under eaves to keep the appliance out of the rain. In summary, if you are planning to use the deep frying method to prepare your Thanksgiving turkey use extreme Fire, continued on page 12

Multi-Service Office to Advance Air-Sea Battle Concept From Air-Sea Battle Office WASHINGTON (NNS) -The Department of Defense announced Nov. 9 the creation of a new office to integrate air and naval combat capabilities in support of emerging national security requirements. In the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates directed the Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps to develop a comprehensive concept to counter emerging anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) challenges. The services collaborated to develop the Air-Sea Battle (ASB) concept. On Aug. 12, 2011, Navy Adm. Jonathan Greenert, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, and Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove established the Air-Sea Battle Office (ASBO), creating a framework to implement the ASB concept. The ASB concept will guide the services as they work together to maintain a continued U.S. advantage against the global proliferation of advanced military technologies and A2/AD capabilities. Air-Sea Battle will leverage military and technological capabilities that reflect unprecedented Navy, Marine and Air Force collaboration, cooperation, integration, and resource investments. The ASBO will oversee the concept implementation by facilitating coordination among the services, influencing service wargames, fostering developMulti-Service, continued on page 12

The Game of the Week, probably the best overall pick of the year for GOTW. Is it really surprising that once a public figure achieves a milestone, there is often controversy or scandal surrounding it (i.e. Mark McGuire Steroids, Herman Cain - Moving up in Polls, and Joe Paterno breaking the record for wins with 409, etc....) Both teams are somewhat surprising to me this year. The Nittany Lions are squeaking by on most of their games with a winning margin of only 12.5 ppg, and that's including a 34 point victory of Indiana State and a 28 point victory over Eastern Michigan. In addition, Penn State has only played one ranked team this year (#3 Alabama) and lost by 16 at HOME. In the "Horseshoe" and the "distraction" around the Penn State football team, Ohio State comes through with a victory by 3. To make me pick between Vandy and Tennessee is just wrong!! I grew up watching the Vols and going to the games and I did my NROTC at Vanderbilt; not to mention my wife is a HUGE Vandy fan and I'd likely be facing a civil war at the house if I go with my heart. In this one however, I am going with my gut and picking Vandy. They have played some tough teams and been on the losing side after hard fought games. This time it pays off and the Commodores pull the upset. Easter Michigan has the slight edge over at home simply because Kent St. just has trouble scoring. Only averaging 14 points a game, they will have a problem beating anyone. Either way, it would be easier to pick if these teams were tops in their division, but they are both middle of the pack in the MAC. Really?? The San Diego offense has been revived even after losing to Green Bay and will be prepared to outscore the Bears at Soldier Field. The key for the Chargers is to contain Matt Forte, not necessarily in the run game but the pass game. Chargers win by 10. The Rams have won their 1 game for the year and with the quality run defense of Seattle, they will have to focus more on the pass game instead of Steven Jackson. As Bradford gets more comfortable with Brandon Lloyd, the offensive production will continue to get better but until that happens, I have to go with the Seahawks. The Redskins found SOME life, and I use that term loosely in RB Roy Helu in the passing game but are still struggling on the ground. I have watched several of their games on AFN (since they NEVER show my Titans) and it is confusing to me why they go to their best target in Tight End Fred Davis only late in the game. If something works, go to it as early and often as you can. You can bet the house that Dallas will be looking for Jason Whitten during the first set of downs. This, along with Demarcus Ware playing havoc on Beck will make this a win for the Cowboys. Silveri:

Penn State vs. Ohio State (GOTW) -This is a tough pick. With everything going on at Penn State involving the allegations involving an ex defensive coordinator of Joe Pa's, and the blind eye he may or may not have turned... I literally just went to ESPN.com and found out JoePa has been fired. What a travesty. This is such an unfair end to an illustrious career of the most winningest coach in college football history. This may change the outcome of the game. Two things could happen: the Nittany Lions could come out and play a "Win one for the Gipper" game, or they could play a "our coach just got fired after coaching here for like eight million years and we're depressed" game. I would bet on the first. Plus I hate Ohio State. PSU honors JoePa and beats the Buckeyes like they stole something. Vandy vs. Tennessee -As much as I'd like to pick against LT. Page, I can't. The Vols are playing at home and will be visiting that ugly checkered endzone all night. Tennessee with ease. Eastern Michigan vs. Kent State -Growing up in Allen Park, a small, quiet suburb of Detroit, I lived about 30 minutes away from the Eastern Michigan campus in Ypsilanti, MI. I also played some high school football, so I know that every high school player who grew up in Michigan dreamed of one day playing at the storied program of Eastern Michigan. Wait a minute, that was the University of Michigan or Michigan State everyone dreamed of playing at. The Eastern Michigan Football Program is basically a round up of Michigan high school players that didn't get picked up to play football at a good program. With that being said, I know nothing about Kent State, so I am going to flip a coin right now to pick this one. Tails. Eastern Michigan High School it is. EMU Eagles by Ten. San Diego vs. Chicago -Chargers all day. As long as Phil Rivers can play halfway decently, the Chargers should take this one pretty easily. Plus, Chicago is in my team's (THE Detroit Lions) Division so I always enjoy seeing a division rival lose. Chargers by 14. Seattle vs. St. Louis -Two crappy teams make for one crappy game. Coin Flip. Tails. St. Louis wins. Dallas vs. Washington -This pick is dedicated to my lovely Wife, Chief Maldonado, and LT. Tovar. Tony Romo sucks and so do the Cowboys! Washington wins big! Go Redskins! week.

That's all I've got, see you all next Dembinski:

Here's hoping to have a better week than the past few!

GM2 Bryan Silveri CMAA Office

NCAA: *GOTW* 12 Penn State @ Ohio State: I'm picking the Buckeyes in honor of my brother-in-law. In a family of ND devotees, he stands tall behind his team. The Buckeyes seem to have overcome the loss of Pryor and have been able to defeat 2 of 3 ranked opponents. On the side of Penn State, there is the obvious shake up of the team, fresh from the loss of legendary coach Joe Paterno. I think this will be a little much for them to get past, and will give the Buckeyes leverage. The Nittany Lions will be upset, depressed, and distracted. I think Ohio State will be able to capitalize on this and get another victory over a ranked opponent, this time at home. Vandy @ Tennessee - Tennessee has a good passing game and a stronger defense than the Commodores. Vanderbilt can add another tally to the road losses column, the Vols win it. Eastern Michigan @ Kent State My dad was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, which is home to the Eastern Michigan Eagles. I must admit, I don't think he's been back since he left the hospital though. These are small town teams, who struggle to break even. There is an obvious "better" team though, in the Eagles. They will be able to run the ball all over the Kent State Golden Flashes. By the way, are they serious with that mascot? The Golden Flashes? Wow. NFL: San Diego @ Chicago - These two teams don't face each other often. But, when they played at Soldier Field, the Bears won by 13 pts. I think the Bears will be able to repeat, capitalizing on the home field advantage and their strong defensive skills. Seattle @ St. Louis - Who is the biggest loser? Well, if you ask me, this game will tell you. I would just like to mention what a strange season you have for St. Louis, with their only win coming against New Orleans. How embarrassing for the Saints, huh? Anyway, eenie meenie miney moe...hmmm....I guess I'll go with the Rams. Because I like anyone who beats the Saints! Dallas @ Washington - This is clearly a victory for the Cowboys. Washington is in a huge slump, and since week 4 they have gotten progressively worse. I don't think they can recover from being shut out by the Bills in week 8. Dallas is looking to get a second win over the Redskins, hopefully with a larger margin than week 2. But a win is a win, and the Cowboys will have it at Washington. McHenry: When you're at the bottom, you don't have a lot to say. So here are my picks for this week. Ohio State over Penn State. Nothing funny comes to mind with this game. Vandy over Tennessee because Tennessee just sucks! Eastern Michigan over Kent State because "E" comes before "K" in the alphabet.

PAgE 3

Chicago over San Diego. Since San Diego couldn't beat Oakland last week, why in the world would I pick them again? (Watch 'em win this week.) Seattle over St Louis. Who would have thought Seattle could actually look good? And against Baltimore last week...they're on a roll. And this one pains me to say, but I gotta go with Dallas over Washington.. The Skins are just plain awful...at least the Eagles keep you hanging on until the middle of the 4th quarter. With my Eagles a lowly 3-6, who really gives a crap? Good luck to the other panelists...hope you all lose!! Squall: NCAA : Penn State vs. Ohio State Penn State will win this game for Joe Pa. They are on a mission to win the Big Ten and will make sure Joe Pa is happy even though he was fired. Ohio State has had a rocky season and everyone knows this is there rebuilding year. they can not get the job done for some reason. Penn State is playing excellent, expect a blow out. Vandy vs. Tennessee - (This game is for Lt. Page) Well LSU will run over both of these teams so only good I see is home field advantage and the Vols are here to win. Don't get me wrong the Commodores might beat Tennessee in basketball but not football. Tennessee has a great team and would be at the top if it was not for no injuries. I pick the Vols to take this one. Eastern Michigan vs. Kent State (I know and I apologize lol) well my best friend Calvin Tiggle #8 plays safety for this team and when I talked to him he told me they will pull this one out. Even though they’re having a rough season expect him to shine as a redshirted freshman in this game. So i go with Kent State. NFL : San Diego vs. Chicago The Bears will beat San Diego in this due to home field advantage. The Bears are a strong team and knows playoffs are coming soon. Urlacher knows he most protect his house and he will in this game trust me. Expect brawls and hard hitting game but Bears will win in the cold. Seattle vs. St. Louis - Are you serious? Well I say Rams because they beat my Saints and if you can beat the best team in the league you can beat anybody . Seattle just cant get it together. they are slow and lazy at times and act like they just play to lose at times. I mean they cant win at home or on the road. St. Louis in a close win. Dallas vs. Washington - (once again, I know and I apologize lol) I’m sticking with Romo in this one. Murray is running over everybody in the league and Dallas looks to change things around now. Dallas is normally as second half team and knows another loss or two can kick them out of the playoffs. Expect the boys to be the boys and be victorious. Dallas all day.

Empower. Enrich. EDUCATE. November is Military Family Month! By Fleet & Family Support Center It’s no secret to Sigonella that our military families have the amazing ability to be consistently flexible and show continued strength on a day-to-day basis. Moms, dads, sons, daughters, grandmas, grandpas, uncles, aunts, cousins and everyone in between knowsthat it takes resilience and sacrifice to be part of a successful military family. We are grateful to these families for supporting our service members in multiple ways and helping them to carry out their missions with determination, self-confidence and dedication. As anyone who is already a member of a military family knows, it is not only the service member who serves – everyone in a military family serves! It is because of this selfless support that we salute them this month to acknowledge all that they do to make military life that much more rewarding. There are lots of ways you can help show support for our military families and help celebrate their recognition during this month. Military HOMEFRONT is featuring information on its website that highlights what you can do to celebrate military families(www.MilitaryHOMEFRONT.dod. mil). The website includes a link to the Presidential Proclamation made by President

Obama on November 1st, in which he declared November, 2011 as Military Family Month. The president called on all Americans to “honor military families through private actions and public service for the tremendous contributions they make in the support of our service members and our Nation.” The webpage also features information on the national Joining Forces program sponsored by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, as well as provides links to the latest blog postings and news from the Department of Defense. Check out the website for a load of resources at your fingertips! Another integral part of this month’s observance is the Armed Services YMCA 2012 ASYMCA “My Military Hero” Essay Contest. Co-sponsored by Lockheed Martin, this contest is open to children of all active duty or retired (with 20+ years of service) military personnel from Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard/Reserve families in first through twelfth grade. The essay can focus on any person who is/has served in the U.S. military and could be a historical figure, family member, friend, etc. There are lots of possibilities and creative entries with different formats (such as poetry, stories and news articles) are encouraged.

If your child prefers to express himself through drawing, the 2012 “My Military Family” Art Contest may be a great opportunity to let his artistic talents shine. Supported by Geico, this contest is open to elementary school age children (K-6th grade) of all active duty or retired (with 20+ years of service) military personnel from Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard/Reserve families. Drawings should be of the student’s family and in color on a 6x8 inch template. That’s not all - there are even prizes to be won! First and second place winners in each grade category for both contests will receive a U.S. Savings Bond. For details on contest guidelines, entry forms and additional information, please visit www.asmyca.org. Once again, we express our deep appreciation for the exceptional commitments made by our military families in the many ways in which they serve. Your generosity and willingness to go the extra mile make our military community steadfast, caring and significant in its numerous levels and networks of support. Thank you for all that you do: this month (and every day), we salute you!

Monti Faces Hurdles as He Takes Reins in Italy

Former European commissioner Mario Monti began preparations last week to form a new technocrat government to restore market confidence in Italy's battered public finances after accepting a mandate to succeed Silvio Berlusconi. (Photo by Irish times)

By: The Associated Press

Economist Mario Monti accepted the monumental task Sunday of trying to form a government that can rescue Italy from financial ruin, expressing confidence that the nation can beat the crisis if its people pull together. His selection as prime minister came a day after Silvio Berlusconi reluctantly resigned from the post, bowing out after world markets pummeled Italy's borrowing ability, reflecting a loss of faith in the 75-year-old media mogul's leadership. Berlusconi quit after the Italian parliament approved reform mea-

sures demanded by the European Union and central bank officials -- but even those are not considered enough to right Italy's ailing economy. "There is an emergency, but we can overcome it with a common effort," Monti told the nation, shortly after Italy's president formally asked him to see if he can muster enough political support to lead the country out of one of its most trying times since World War II. "In a moment of particular difficulty, Italy must win the challenge to bounce back, we must be an element of strength and not weakness in the Eu-

by Catholicnewsagency.com/ Italian Magazine

At world level the collective promotion in favor of pasta received a powerful impulsion thanks to the outcome of the World Pasta Congress held in Rome on 25th October 1995. Delegations from various countries discussed together the theme of the collective promotion in favor of pasta consumption, exchanging their ideas and experiences. Account was taken and stress was laid on the importance of spreading to the utmost the knowledge of pasta among consumers throughout the world by means of collective initiatives of promotional nature and institutional information campaigns. The countries with greatest experience in this field made available their knowhow for the benefit of those countries which have only recently come to realize the virtues and merits of pasta. The ambitious project of organizing on a world- wide basis World Pasta Day on 25th October of each year, for the purpose of recalling and enhancing the first event that saw the gathering of the international pasta community was successfully carried through, thanks to the efforts of the Steering Committee, consisting of representatives of the National Pasta Association (United States), of UN.A.F.P.A. and of the Associations of Vene-

Vatican City - Most of the Vatican’s prized documents are only available to a select few who visit the archives within the walls of Vatican City, but NASA is prepared to offer a technological solution and digitize the entire collection. Within ten years, anyone with an internet connection will be able to access the priceless documents without having to make a trip to Rome. All 80,000 manuscripts in the Vatican Apostolic Library will be available in digital copies thanks to a data system developed by NASA. The full on-line library will take years to finalize due to the sheer number of fragile documents that need to be accounted for, but converting each manuscript into digital form will ensure that the artifacts are protected for years to come. Some of the most anticipated documents that will be made available from the Vatican’s vaults include: a Greek version of the Bible, the two ancient manuscripts with the works of Virgil and PeNASA, continued on page 12

ropean Union, of which we are founders," he added. Monti must now draw up a Cabinet, lay out his priorities, and see if he has enough support in the parliament to govern. Rival political parties offered various degrees of support, including one demand from Berlusconi's party -- the largest in the parliament -that his government last only as long enough as it takes to heal Italy's finances and revive the economy. The 68-year-old economics professor will have to win a confidence vote in the parliament before he can lead the nation. Berlusconi's party demanded that in exchange for its crucial support, only technocrats -- not politicians -make up Monti's Cabinet. Monti faces a daunting challenge: preventing an Italian default that could tear apart the 17-nation eurozone and send Europe and the United States into new recessions. Italy's economy is hampered by high wage costs, low productivity, fat government payrolls, excessive taxes, choking bureaucracy and an educational system that produces one of the lowest levels of college graduates among rich countries. In addition, as the third-largest economy in the currency-sharing eurozone, Italy is considered too large for Europe to bail out like it did for Greece, Portugal and Ireland. The next Italian government needs to push through even more painful reformsand austerity measures to deal with $2.6 trillion in debt -- about 120% of the country's economic output.

Smirking face of the Devil discovered in Giotto fresco Story by The Telegraph The smirking face of the Devil has been discovered hidden in a fresco by the Italian medieval artist Giotto after remaining undetected for more than 700 years in the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. The satanic image went unnoticed until now because it is artfully hidden in the folds of a cloud and is invisible from ground level. The discovery of the face, in a fresco which depicts the death of St Fran-

cis, was made by Chiara Frugoni, a medievalist and an expert on the saint. "It's a powerful portrait, with a hooked nose, sunken eyes and two dark horns," Ms Frugoni said in an article in a forthcoming issue of the St Francis art history periodical. "The significance of the image still needs to be delved into. In the Middle Ages it was believed that demons lived in the sky and that they could impede the ascension of human souls to Heaven. The Paternò townspeople will soon celebrate the annual religious festival honoring Saint Barbara, the town’s beloved patron saint which features religious processions, fireworks, arts and crafts and entertainment. (PHOTO BY Cicciofaramaco Photography)

Paternò braces for Saint Barbara festival The town of Paternò will soon pay homage to Saint Barbara, its celestial protector who will be honored with a spectacular three-day festival running from Dec. 3 through 5 featuring parades, processions, music and fireworks. The festival, whose highlights will be held on Dec. 3 and 4, is the greatest religious and folklore event in town which will include processions, arts and crafts displays, fireworks and music shows. The Paternò community is grateful to Santa Barbara because it had benefited from her help in 1576, when a deadly plague epidemic hit the town killing thousands. According to legend, Saint Barbara appeared in a dream to a nun promising to save the town if townspeople would proclaim her as the patron saint. The nun disclosed the dream to the community that accepted the request and enthusiastically acclaimed her as the Santa Patrona (patron saint). A few days later the plague miraculously ended. So Paternò townspeople dedicated a sanctuary to their savior. Tradition also holds that Santa Barbara succeded in becoming the town celestial patron as she “got the better of her opponents,” two saints both named Vincent. The first Saint Vincent, a 4th century Spanish martyr whose veneration had been introduced or actually imposed by Spanish prince Moncada of Paternò, the town governor in the 16th century. The second is Saint Vincent Ferreri, a preacher belonging to the Dominican Order who was sanctified in 1455. Santa Barbara is also said to have interceded with God to stop two terrible Etna eruptions that occurred in 1780 and in 1983, as well as the catastrophic 1908 Messina tsunami. Saint Barbara is typically invoked to grant safety from thunderstorms, fires and natural disasters. Since the Middle Age, she has been regarded as the patron saint of those who are in danger of fire or explosions. So she has been associated with artillerymen, fire fighters and ordnance disposal technicians. In the past, her image was displayed on arsenals and powder magazines. In Italian, the ammunition magazine on a war ship is still called “Santabarbara.” “Life of Saint Barbara” According to one legend, Saint Barbara lived in Nicomedia (Izmit, Turkey) around 273 AD during the rule of Maximius, an anti-Christian emperor. She was the beautiful and intelligent daughter of Dioscuros, a wealthy pagan nobleman and a jealous father. An ambitious man, he wanted to marry Barbara off to a mighty pagan prince. But she refused saying she was already devoted to Christ. Because of her stubborn refusal, Dioscorous had her locked in a tower (that is why Saint Barbara is usually represented standing by a tower with three windows,

carrying the palm of a martyr or the chalice of happy death in her hand) to punish her and to keep her away from the teachings of Jesus. But Barbara was not upset with her father’s decision and actually “enjoyed” her imprisonment spending her time praying with her friend Giuliana. One day, upon his return from a long trip, Dioscourus discovered that Barbara had carved a cross on her bathtub and that another window had been added to the tower, the three windows symbolizing the Holy Trinity. Furious at discovering her perseverance in the Christian faith, Dioscorous threw himself with a blind impulse against Barbara who managed to escape toward a mountain and hid behind a rock that miraculously opened and closed behind her. The evil father eventually caught her and dragged her before Marcian, a Roman prefect who tried to convince her to give up her faith. As she kept refusing to abjure her Christian faith, Marcian decreed that she would be tortured and put to death by beheading. Dioscorus himself carried out the execution by grabbing her beautiful long hair and beheading her on Dec. 4, 290 AD. Immediately after her execution God punished this cruel father by striking him with a lightning. Festival Schedule Highlights On Dec. 3, 21 cannon blank shots will announce the beginning of the festival’s eve at 8 a.m. In the evening, after the Holy Mass at 5 p.m., the holy procession featuring the saint’s relics will kick off at 6:30 p.m. leaving from via Messina and reaching piazza Indipendenza at the Sain Domenico Church. Later, an elementary students’ choir will sing religious chants in piazza Indipendenza at 9 p.m. (Entrata dei Cantanti), followed by another choir that will perform ancient city brotherhoods’ songs. The evening should close with a firework and music show in piazza Nino La Russa. The highlight of the festival is

Dec. 4. The festivities begin early in the morning with bell ringing at dawn. Later, the statue depicting the saint and her holy relics will be unveiled at 8:30 a.m. (Svelata del Simulacro) at the Santa Barbara Church (piazza santa Barbara). Following this ceremony, after the unveiling and mass, a music show by the local city band will be held at 10:15 a.m. in piazza Indipendenza to accompany the coming out of the statue and the relics that will be taken to the Church of Idria, where devotion started in 1576. At noon, an amazing firework show will be performed in piazza Vittorio Veneto. On Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m., a solemn holy mass will be celebrated at the church of Saint Barbara. Two solemn religious processions will then be held at 10 a.m. and at 4:30 p.m. During the first one, the holy relics of the saint will be brought in procession throughout the historic center of the town, leaving from the Church of Saint Barbara and reaching the Church of Saint Antonio Abate. From there, the second procession will be repeated in the afternoon. A group of nine varette or cerei (baroque styled carts containing a tall wax candle decorated with lights, small flags and statues depicting angels, saints and flowers) will lead the procession. Around midnight, the afternoon procession will return to the Church of Saint Barbara. Spectacular fireworks, to be held by the Norman castle, will end this breathtaking festival that will also feature art and arts and crafts, exhibitions, poetry presentations and sports activities. For more information and detailed schedule call City of Paternò 0957970420 or the Santa Barbara Parish at 095-621380.

By Tracie Barnthouse The Signature Staff My all-time favorite pasta is pasta alla norma. Eggplant, pasta, tomato sauce, cheese? Yes, please. So, when I heard that the recipe at this month’s FFSC cooking class was going to be parmagiana (or my very loose translation: pasta alla norma, but put together like lasagna without the pasta), I was in! And, since we were feeling extra gluttonous, we decided to make a spinach ricotta ravioli dish and an orange salad, too! It was an ideal vegetarian meal… until they served the ravioli with a ham cream sauce. You can’t win ‘em all, right? Onto the recipes! For the parmagiana, you’ll need slices of eggplant that have been fried in vegetable oil. They need to be mushy, but not falling apart, and the oil needs to be blotted off of the slices before you work with them. You’ll also need tomato sauce (make your own or buy it in a jar, whichever works for you, and I totally won’t judge), either Parmesan or Pecorino

Pietro

cheese, grated, and an egg. Pretty simple ingredients. Assembly time. We made our meal in a small aluminum pan, but if you’re making this at home for family or friends, I recommend using a 9x12 casserole dish. Take a little bit of the tomato sauce and cover the bottom of the pan with it. Next, put down some of the slices of eggplant, so they are in one single layer, covering the bottom of the pan. Next, plop some tomato sauce on top of the eggplant, making sure the eggplant is thinly coated with sauce. Next, sprinkle with cheese. Repeat the process as many times as you’d like. The consensus was that four layers is perfecto, but you can either take that advice or toss it. After everything is assembled, crack an egg into a bowl and whisk it with some tomato sauce and cheese. (If you’re making this for a family, I would do probably three or four eggs, and maybe a ½ cup to 1 cup of sauce.) Pour it over the assembled eggplants. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius (or 350 degrees Fahrenheit) for 10-15 minutes.

Next, ravioli. The chef of the agriturismo we went to gave us a demonstration on how to make the egg pasta, and it’s really simple: take about 250 grams (about 1 cup) of grano duro flour (semolina) and two eggs and knead it all together. That’s it. If you make this pasta at home, know that it must be used within a couple of days, because of the egg in the dough. It also can’t be frozen, so eat up! You can also buy sheets of pasta at stores like Auchan. I’ve found them in the refrigerated section, by the butter and cheese. You might call that taking the easy way out. I call it efficient. Alright, so no matter how you get your pasta, it needs to be cut into circles. You can use a biscuit cutter, the bottom of a jar of soup, your crafty scissor loving child (though not recommended), or another method, but you need circles of dough. After you cut the dough to shape, set it aside. Now, mix together some spinach (feel free to boil your own spinach, but I would definitely use the boxed stuff for this.), a hunk of fresh ricotta

cheese, and a couple spoonfuls of Parmesan cheese. Mix the whole thing together and dollop a little bit into the middle of each pasta circle. Andrea Carobene, the FFSC’s wonderful and fearless Intercultural Relations leader told us ½ teaspoon of filling for each circle, but I would recommend a bit more, maybe even a tablespoon. Don’t tell. Now, fold each pasta circle in half, and press the ends together. You need to make sure it’s sealed really well, or else the filling will come out while it’s boiling in the water. No bueno. After pressing the ends together, take a fork and seal the whole thing. To cook, put in a pot of salted water and cook for only a few minutes, just so everything has a chance to get warm. For a topping, tomato sauce, sage-butter, or what they served for lunch, a ham cream sauce goes well; just make sure it’s not too strong that it will overpower the spinach filling. Our final recipe was an orange salad, which is fitting because oranges are in season right now (though the

Gelso Bianco

popular blood oranges aren’t ready until March, contrary to what you may see or hear). This recipe sounds so strange, and trust me, I had my doubts, but it’s actually very delicious. Dice up an orange, drizzle some olive oil on top, and then some sliced onion, salt, and a little red pepper flakes. Mix the whole thing together. That’s it! The next cooking class is at the end of January. Check it out! It’s tons of fun and we usually go to a different part of the island, so you get to see what life is like in rural Sicily. Thanksgiving at Borgo Antico with ITT There are probably several things that come to mind when you think of Thanksgiving. Turkey and stuffing are most likely included, along with, football, family and being unable to button your pants for three days. It may be tempting to sit around missing home and wishing Thanksgiving were the same exact way this year, but why not change things up this year with a rustic, Sicilian stone farmhouse? Add some friends gathered around the fireplace and a glass of the house red. Devour olive oil, cheese and pasta dishes made with fresh ingredients produced on that very land. Is this starting to sound better than your typical Thanksgiving? Make this year special by celebrating the American tradition in a typical Sicilian way! ITT is going to Borgo Antico Argiturismo Organic Farm on Thanksgiving Day. They will provide the transportation and reservations. And at Borgo Antico, it’s not even necessary to order food, it just starts coming out and doesn’t stop until you’re about to pop. It will be a different kind of Thanksgiving, but at least one thing will remain. You still won’t be able to button your pants for three days!

Italian, continued from page 1 Italian front. To mark Italy’s Armed Forces Day, the Italian President lays a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria in Piazza Venezia every year. “We are remembering the sacrifice of all the fallen soldiers who have fought in World War I,” Motta Mayor Angelo Giuffrida said. “We also take the time to remember the soldiers fallen on all wars throughout the modern age.” The ceremony began with a Roman Catholic Mass at the St. Antonio Church in Motta. After the Mass, there was a ceremonial parade to a memorial commemorating fallen Italian Soldiers in the main square of the city. There, Giuffrida and other Motta community residents gave speeches about what Italian Armed Forces Day means to them and what it is like to have Americans join them for the ceremonial event. “The American presence in Motta is a sign of long-standing friendship between our community and the American community,” Giuffrida said. “We feel like they are brothers to us and just as it happens every year on numerous occasions, they invite us to their ceremonies on base and we invite them to participate in our memorials, ceremonies and celebrations in the city. The presence of Americans here is very meaningful and we are very happy and proud to have Americans among our best friends and brothers.” NAS Sigonella Honor Guard participants had the opportunity to participate in the Mass, parade and ceremony as well. “The fact that I’m wearing a U.S. uniform in another country is self-explanatory,” Honor Guard member and Information Systems Technician Seaman, Samuel Garcia said. “I did a lot of ROTC growing up so carrying the colors in another country makes me feel a little more proud of what I’m doing for my nation.”

CHOICES, continued from page 1 military, we have sessions about technical colleges, we have sessions about four-year colleges, we have sessions about financing and other options,” Redmond said. “We have people here from all of those different places that are here to help students transition to career or college after high school.” There were also sessions dedicated to students who have thoughts about following in their parents’ footsteps into the military. Other sessions for students included a trade school session and sessions geared to educate students about the Post 9-11 GI Bill and other financial concerns. “We have many sessions with three different time zones that individuals can choose from that will best fit them,” Bedard said. “If an individual wants to go on into the military we have two different sessions on military careers. If they want to go into trade school we have some sessions for that. In an hour-and-a-half, it (CHOICES Night) tries to meet the needs of many of our students.” The Sigonella middle and high school staff agreed that having CHIOCES Night really helps their students decide on what’s right for them and their futures after Sigonella. “I think the most important thing is that the college fits their needs,” Berard said. “It depends on what they’re looking for such as academics or a scholarship in sports or if they’re looking for a large college or small college. They need be able to investigate those things and find out what fits them.”

Everyone involved in the process of making CHOICES Night a success all said it was not an easy event to plan and a lot of time and coordination was involved making sure the information for the universities was there. “We have to thank our Parent, Teacher, Student Organization (PTSO) for sending letters to colleges all around America asking them to send us brochures, pens, banners and all kinds of things which many of the colleges responded,” Redmond said. “So all of the information here was donated by various colleges and our PTSO helped us do that.” The Sigonella middle and high school staff also agreed how important it is for students to get an early jump for their future plans after high school. “We recognize that not every student that graduates from high school is going to go on to colleges, but there are choices,” Berard said. “They need to further their career and decide what they want to do after they leave our wonderful institution. So, what we try to do here is show them there are many options.” For more information about CHOICES Night, college and planning for your child’s future, contact the school at 6244281/2.

Implementation of the ASB concept by the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps will foster positive change in the institutional relationships among the services, the integration of acquisition strategies, and the conceptual approach to warfare. The ASB concept is a natural and deliberate evolution of U.S. warfighting to counter emerging A2/AD threats that include conventional ballistic missiles, long-range precision cruise missiles, advanced integrated air and missile defense systems, electronic and cyber warfare capabilities, submarines, surface combatants, and modern combat aircraft. Air-Sea Battle will enable the projection of force in defense of U.S. interests and those of our allies and by sustaining stability and freedom of access throughout the global commons. UN.A.F.P.A. carried out an important task of co-ordination of the initiative and thereafter saw to the collection and spreading of information on the various initiatives undertaken for World Pasta Day in the various countries of the world. The objective of World Pasta Day is to draw the attention of the media and consumers to pasta. Communication should underline the fact that pasta is a global food, consumed in all five continents, having unquestionable merits, appropriate for a dynamic and healthy life style capable of meeting both primary food requirements and those of highlevel gastronomy Every country celebrates World Pasta Day in absolute autonomy, while respecting a global strategy, and making use of the official logo of the event; The key messages, recurring in the various communication initiatives, emphasize the economic feasibility, gastronomic versatility and nutritional value of pasta.

NASA, continued from page 6 trarch, and a rare edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy. This project is not one to be faced with a “weak heart,” wrote Monsignor Cesare Pasini, prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library in the pages of a recent edition of L’Osservatore Romano. As the director of the project, he expects around 45 million pages including text and pictures to be “digitalized” which will occupy 45 petabytes of memory. Msgr. Pasini exclaimed, “that’s 45 quadrillion bytes!” The project of “high and innovative value,” which the prefect estimates will take 10 years and involve over a hundred people in the final phases, aims not only to scan the documents into electronic format, but to ensure their “stability” for the future and facilitate their maintenance and management. The project will reproduce images of the manuscripts using a scanner and a 50 megapixel camera to convert them into the NASA-invented Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) format. The NASA format has been used by the agency for decades in the storing and sharing documents related to space missions, astrophysics and nuclear medicine. The Vatican Apostolic Library recently completed a two-year feasibility study that “digitalized” 23 manuscripts into five terabytes of memory space. Referring to that study, Msgr Pasini said that in comparison with the total scope of the project, the work that has been completed is little more than a mustard seed. “But we know well that that seed contains an immense energy,” he noted. “Welcoming the promise guaranteed in the parable, we would like to give hope also to everyone who waits for the fruits of the realization of this project.” Devil, continued from page 7 "Until now it was thought that the first painter to use clouds in this way was Andrea Mantegna, with a painting of St Sebastian from 1460, in which high up in the sky there's a cloud from which a

knight on horseback emerges. Now we know that Giotto was the first (to use this technique)." Sergio Fusetti, the head of the restoration work in the basilica, said the devil face may have been a dig at somebody the artist had quarreled with. Claudio Strinati, an art historian, said it was not unusual for Renaissance artists to include hidden meanings in their works. "Paintings often had two facets – an explicit one and an implicit one." Millions of pilgrims and tourists have trooped through the basilica in Assisi, in Umbria, since the fresco was painted in the 13th century without noticing the devil's face. It was only discovered during restoration of the fresco, the 20th in a series of images of St Francis's life and death by Giotto. Born near Florence in the late Middle Ages, Giotto di Bondone became one of the most important figures of the Early Renaissance. Among his most celebrated works are a series of frescoes in Padua, frescoes and altarpieces in Santa Croce church in Florence and a painting of the Madonna which is on display in Florence's Uffizi Galleries. The CFC-O overseas website also adds that it is the only authorized organization that may urge federal employees to donate to charities in their workplaces. Department of Defense employees are able to donate to any charity that is registered in the program once a year through this avenue. NMCRS: Aiding Marines, Sailors & Their Families

Your Money, Helping Service Members By: NMCRS

There are many ways we honor members of the armed services. We rise and applaud them at sporting events, wiping our eyes at the sight of muscular young men with prosthetic legs. We hang banners from overpasses, welcoming home local men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. We attach "Support Our Troops" stickers to our cars. While symbolic measures are no doubt appreciated, veterans need much more than a standing ovation and a pat on the back. There are dozens of charities that claim to help veterans. Sadly, though, the track record for veterans' charities is poor, charity watchdogs say, for two reasons: 1. Veterans organizations are magnets for hucksters and thieves.

For example, a man who identified himself as Lt. Cmdr. Bobby Thompson raised millions of dollars and cozied up to some well-placed politicians by creating a sham charity called the U.S. Navy Veterans Association. An investigation by the St. Petersburg Times found that the charity reported income of more than $100 million since 2002. The group's founder, who never served in the military and apparently stole someone's identity, has been indicted, but his whereabouts are unknown. Crooks gravitate to veterans charities because they're lucrative, says Ken Berger, chief executive of Charity Navigator, a charity watchdog. Helping veterans "is a very powerful mission that pulls at many people's heartstrings," he says. "They see a big bucket of money to rip off." 2. A large percentage of donors' funds go to telemarketers and professional fundraisers. Many well-meaning founders of veterans groups don't have the time or expertise to run a charity, so they hire telemarketers and professional fundraisers, Berger says. Too often, he says, they turn a blind eye to the amount of money the professionals keep for themselves. Some large veterans charities spend up to 90% of donors' contributions on fundraising, says Daniel Borochoff, president of CharityWatch (formerly the American Institute of Philanthropy). Borochoff 's research into the high cost of fundraising by veterans charities led to congressional hearings in 2007. Borochoff told Congress that 75% of the veterans charities he analyzed received a "D" or "F" rating, vs. 22% of all charities. These veterans charities received an A or A+ grade from CharityWatch, a charity watchdog group that analyzes charities' financial reports: • • • • • • • •
