Warrior to Warrior - each one teach one By MC1 Erica Gardner

Members of the Warrior Mentoring Program relax and enjoy each other’s company through team building activities such as rock climbing or camping. The mentoring program was developed as a means for warriors returning from a hostile combat zone to talk, listen and mentor each other.

A swashbuckling patcheyed pirate, an unearthed treasure chest full of surprises, and pirate language lessons are not normally what you would expect to find at the MWR Library on NAS I. But this July, you will find all of this and more, at the Summer Reading Camp: Voyage to Book Island reading program for kids ages 6-12. The program is designed to get kids’ noses in books, and for every book they read, they get to choose some “booty” from a treasure chest manned by a pirate whom the kids affectionately refer to as Jack Sparrow. “Jack Sparrow” is actually Brandon Bohon, and he and his wife Heather volunteered to be a part of the program. “At this age, when kids are still young, they aren’t jaded, [and] they enjoy reading. It’s

fun for them, it’s not a task, and so if you can build that early on, hopefully that will carry on later,” Heather said. During the month-long program, the kids are given a Pirate’s Passport, which take them on a journey around Sicily – to Messina, Palermo, and Siracusa. Every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Bob Tissier, a pirate who looks like Bob the Reader, teaches the kids about the various towns in our area. “I think it’s a great program for children, because kids are always looking for something new and exciting and fun to do in the summer, and giving your child the love of books is one of the best gifts that you can give to your children,” said Cammie Davidson, whose child is participating in the program. For more information about Voyage to Book Island, or the programs happening at the Library, call 624-3875.

Ian Bertnik, 5, picks out a prize from Pirate Brandon Bohon’s treasure chest as a reward for meeting his goal of reading six books in one week. The Summer Reading Program, Voyage to Book Island is just one of the many activities available for Sigonella youth this summer. For more information on upcoming events, contact 624-0506.

There are a lot of soccer fans at NAS Sigonella who were glued to AFN Sports this past month watching the World Cup, but one fan was more invested than most. NAS Sigonella’s Benjamin Jacks, 15, is on his way to becoming the next FIFA star player, and is pursuing his World Cup dreams this summer as he prepares to compete in the United States at the prestigious Surf Cup XXX tournament from July 31-Aug. 2 in San Diego, CA. “I’ve always wanted to play, since I was a little kid,” Jacks said. “I do have back up plans, like be a lawyer, but FIFA soccer has always SOCCER, continued on page 12

The topic of this article is anger management. This term is often misunderstood. How do we manage anger? That was certainly Dave Buznik’s question in the movie staring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson; aptly entitled, Anger Management. In this article, I’m going to discuss four concrete ways to manage your anger. Page 2

Note: In order to encourage interaction in the program, participates go by their first names, as reflected in this article. Warriors returning from a hostile combat zone of gunshots, sleepless nights and nightmares have a place to reflect with other warriors to talk, listen and mentor each other. Brent and Ray, sailors from Naval Hospital Sigonella built a program to provide warriors support through team building exercises and listening to help them through the rough times. “We are not a mental health program,” says Melissa, a fellow

Some experiences in Sicily are well known and well loved-like shopping for fruits and veggies in the Catania market or devouring gelato in Motta. But others are hidden, like secret treasures. After visiting with some local Italians, we discovered a new gem on the Sicilian map: Naro. Page 8
