Warrior to Warrior - each one teach one By MC1 Erica Gardner
Members of the Warrior Mentoring Program relax and enjoy each other’s company through team building activities such as rock climbing or camping. The mentoring program was developed as a means for warriors returning from a hostile combat zone to talk, listen and mentor each other.

A swashbuckling patcheyed pirate, an unearthed treasure chest full of surprises, and pirate language lessons are not normally what you would expect to find at the MWR Library on NAS I. But this July, you will find all of this and more, at the Summer Reading Camp: Voyage to Book Island reading program for kids ages 6-12. The program is designed to get kids’ noses in books, and for every book they read, they get to choose some “booty” from a treasure chest manned by a pirate whom the kids affectionately refer to as Jack Sparrow. “Jack Sparrow” is actually Brandon Bohon, and he and his wife Heather volunteered to be a part of the program. “At this age, when kids are still young, they aren’t jaded, [and] they enjoy reading. It’s
fun for them, it’s not a task, and so if you can build that early on, hopefully that will carry on later,” Heather said. During the month-long program, the kids are given a Pirate’s Passport, which take them on a journey around Sicily – to Messina, Palermo, and Siracusa. Every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Bob Tissier, a pirate who looks like Bob the Reader, teaches the kids about the various towns in our area. “I think it’s a great program for children, because kids are always looking for something new and exciting and fun to do in the summer, and giving your child the love of books is one of the best gifts that you can give to your children,” said Cammie Davidson, whose child is participating in the program. For more information about Voyage to Book Island, or the programs happening at the Library, call 624-3875.
Ian Bertnik, 5, picks out a prize from Pirate Brandon Bohon’s treasure chest as a reward for meeting his goal of reading six books in one week. The Summer Reading Program, Voyage to Book Island is just one of the many activities available for Sigonella youth this summer. For more information on upcoming events, contact 624-0506.
Sigonella athlete to represent Europe this summer By Kahlil Bowen/Cmdr. Thomas Jacks
There are a lot of soccer fans at NAS Sigonella who were glued to AFN Sports this past month watching the World Cup, but one fan was more invested than most. NAS Sigonella’s Benjamin Jacks, 15, is on his way to becoming the next FIFA star player, and is pursuing his World Cup dreams this summer as he prepares to compete in the United States at the prestigious Surf Cup XXX tournament from July 31-Aug. 2 in San Diego, CA. “I’ve always wanted to play, since I was a little kid,” Jacks said. “I do have back up plans, like be a lawyer, but FIFA soccer has always SOCCER, continued on page 12

Direct Line I have already learned that “Sunny Sicily” can get quite hot through the summer and I imagine that it will only get warmer as we enter August. If you are like me, the hotter it gets, the greater the temptation is to crank up the AC inside, and turn on the sprinkler outside to keep the house cold and the grass green; however, this also means that the warmer it gets, the more electricity Sigonella uses and the more water we go through. I welcome your suggestions on how we can all lower our energy usage. I’m, by no means, an expert, but I’m reminded of something Dennis Miller once said, “I rant, therefore I am.” So, I am going to rant a bit on ways that I’ve been told will lower our energy usage and make us a much more efficient base. Obviously, I

This is a great time of year to visit the beach. As you head down to la Spiaggia though, remember that you may not be alone in the water. Many hazards exist; one of the most common among those is jellyfish. Fortunately, most of the water in Sicily is so clear that you can easily spot them. The best way to prevent injury from a jellyfish is avoidance. Occasionally, people are injured through curious handling. However, contact is more likely to be made by the inadvertent swimming into or stepping on one of these creatures. Because of this, you might consider wearing swim shoes and other protective gear when likelihood of contact is high. In the unfortunate event that you do make contact with one of these creatures, pain is immediate and comes from the nematocysts present in the tentacles. The pain can be mild to intense and can be accompanied by itching, rashes, welts, or swelling of the involved area. Nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea can also occur shortly after the initial sting and be followed by numbness, tingling or muscle spasms. Allergic reactions to jellyfish stings vary from person to person and type of jellyfish. If you or a swimmer has been stung in the mouth, eyes or

can’t do this alone, so I need each and every person to be proactive to help keep our energy usage at a minimum and our water usage as low as possible. One easy way to conserve electricity is to make sure that the AC is not turned below 75 degrees or higher if the space is not being used. The higher the temperature is set, the less the compressors have to kick on and the less energy the system uses. Pretty basic, right? The key is to find and maintain a comfortable temperature that doesn’t require the compressors to run constantly. Other easy energy saving ideas include turning lights off when a space is not being used or if there is plenty of daylight, turning off computers when at lunch and before going home for the day, and making sure all unnecessary
over a large percent of the body, seek immediate medical attention. Also, if chest pain, difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips, mouth or tongue develops you should be aware that this is a medical emergency and requires immediate medical intervention. First line treatment includes soaking or rinsing the area in vinegar, salt water or 70% isopropyl alcohol. Never use fresh, iced, or hot water, as this will cause more toxins to be released. Do not rub the area either. If you have to remove the tentacles use gloves, tweezers or a stick, but never your bare hands. Another helpful method is to apply shaving cream or baking soda to the area and use a razor or credit card to remove embedded tentacles; then reapply vinegar or liquids as mentioned above. Over the counter pain medication or antihistamine can be given for discomfort and itching. The area should be kept clean as sometimes an infection or cellulitis can occur. When seeking help, realize that Italian Laws dictate that beaches and lidos must have lifeguards. Commonly known as Salvataggio or Bagnino, they are often dressed in red and may or may not be found at a formal lifeguard station. So ask or look out for them the next time you chose a swim area. equipment are secured when not in use. The bottom line is that if you aren’t using something, please just turn it off. Conserving water at the workplace and at home is simply a matter of timing. If you are watering your lawn, please don’t water it for over 30 minutes at a time -- set a timer to remind you to shut the water off. Also if you water your lawn early in the morning or in the evening, the soil has a chance to absorb the water before the heat evaporates it. When washing your hands, showering or bathing, conserve water by not letting the water run for long periods of time. We’re not deployed, so I’m not talking about taking “Navy showers” here; simply turn the water off when you’re not using it. Also, please report any dripping or leaking appliance
or pipes that cannot be secured in the workplace to public works. A leaking faucet can waste over 50 gallons of water in a day and we need to conserve every last drop. I realize that the Sigonella community has already made large strides in lowering energy and water usage over the past few years; however, making the best use of our precious resources requires constant and proactive attention. If we can each make it a point to focus on our energy habits, I have no doubt we can continue to reduce our usage and make Sigonella one of
the most efficient bases in the region.

On the verge of exploding The topic of this article is anger management. This term is often misunderstood. How do we manage anger? That was certainly Dave Buznik’s question in the movie staring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson; aptly entitled, Anger Management. In this article, I’m going to discuss four concrete ways to manage your anger. While anger management has rapidly become a household term, the public still has a very limited understanding of what anger management means. So let’s consider these two words carefully to avoid any misunderstanding. Etymologically, the word anger is derived from the Latin word angere, which meant to strangle. Familiar synonyms are ire, rage, fury, indignation, and wrath (each with a varying degree of intensity and duration). In our vernacular it generally describes an emotional state induced by displeasure. The word “manage-
ment” conveys the idea of directing, conducting, or supervising something. Therefore, anger management deals with the ability to identify anger and cope with it appropriately. Anger is a part of life. Anger cannot be eliminated completely, nor should it be. We should feel indignation over moral injustice (hence, there are times when anger is absolutely the correct emotional response). When is anger a problem? Anger is a problem when it is too intense, occurs frequently, lasts too long (duration), destroys interpersonal relationships, affects work performance, and results in person-directed aggression. Dr. Gary R. Collins, a Clinical Psychologist, wrote this about anger: “Anger may be destructive, especially when it persists in the form of aggression or revenge, but it can also be constructive if it motivates us to correct injustice or to think creatively. Anger is aroused when we feel threatened, demeaned, or blocked in our progress toward some desired goal. Usually we know when we are angry, and others know as well. Sometimes, however, anger is kept hidden behind a calm and smiling façade, or buried someplace in the recesses of our brains. One writer has suggested that anger influences people in four basic ways. It can be repressed (so that we refuse to admit its presence), suppressed (deliberately hiding it from others), expressed (in either destructive or harmless ways), or confessed (to God or others). Perhaps Collins’s observation can be instructive at this juncture, “we can hold back and ANGER, continued on page 12

Rules change on escorting families during duty station move By Wm. Cullen James Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs Service members traveling on indeterminate temporary duty (ITDY) orders are now authorized to escort their family members to and from an alternate location at government expense, according to NAVADMIN 227/10, which was released July 9. The message announced the change in the Joint Federal Travel Regulations (JFTR) law that went into effect March 15. The new policy adds an escort entitlement for Sailors to accompany their family during an authorized move. There is no change to family member travel. ITDY is similar to temporary duty (TDY), which the Navy calls temporary additional duty (TAD), but
there is no specified time period and no end-date in the orders. A modification or follow-on orders are required for the member to go to their permanent duty station (PDS). According to Cmdr. Carl Chaffin, distribution management and procedures branch head, this change in policy is the culmination of more than two years of work that was initiated at the direction of the Task Force Individual Augmentee (IA) Conference held in the fall of 2007. "To allow service members returning from IA assignments to reunite with their families was a major issue of that conference," said Chaffin. "Reducing the requirement from 365 to 210 days to be eligible for ITDY orders and the escort entitlement were the courses of action taken to meet that issue." To apply for escort entitlement,
the member must be on ITDY orders dated March 15 or later. Orders dated prior to March 15 can be modified, but this modification does not grandfather in prior travel. "ITDY orders are issued to service members going on temporary duty when the return date is unknown," said Chaffin. "To qualify for ITDY orders, the Navy has reduced the estimated minimum number of days on assignment to 210 days. ITDY orders extend the same entitlements as TDY orders, plus additional entitlements for moving family members to an alternate place. The escort option only applies to the member when assisting family members such as for the purpose of concurrent travel." Under the new rules, service members must request approval of their itinerary prior to starting travel. Travel is either from the PDS to the ITDY location or from the ITDY location to the PDS. Service members currently on Global War on Terrorism Support Assignments (GSA) cannot be reimbursed retroactively for previous travel, but may make a request for their return travel. Some typical scenarios: • A service member accompanies family members from an alternate location en route to the old PDS upon

Understanding the dangers of Internet Courtesy of MilitaryOneSource

Most parents know the importance of teaching their children how to stay safe in their community. It's also essential to teach your child how to stay safe online. The process begins with both you and your child understanding the dangers and the steps you can take to avoid them. Depending on your child's age and maturity, you may also want to take some extra steps, such as installing filtering software or drawing up a written contract that spells out your guidelines for staying safe on the Internet. Different online activities may pose different dangers, but in general, online dangers include the following: Seeing inappropriate material. Children and teenagers may come across sexually inappropriate Web sites or other materials. They may actively search for these materials as a way to satisfy their curiosity about sex, or they may come across them accidentally. Some sexual Web sites also promote activities that are violent or illegal. Cyberbullying. This is an increasingly common form of online bullying. Children and teenagers may bully each other over e-mail, on social networking sites such as MySpace or Facebook by posting mean comments or unflattering photos, or in online video games through mischievous or malicious in-game play behavior. Online bullying can be very serious, and children should know how to recognize it and what to do if they become a victim. Time wasting or Internet addiction. Spending too much time online can cut into time your child should be spending on schoolwork or having fun with friends and family. Too much Internet time can also result in more serious problems, like Internet addiction. Furthermore, children who spend too much time online may spend too little time enjoying physical activities, and that could put them at risk for health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Inappropriate disclosure of personal information. Children may
Pentagon
share personal information without realizing the potential consequences. A predator could use personal information, such as a last name and hometown, to target a victim. Or, a teenager who posts inappropriate pictures may not realize that such content could stay online where it would be easily available to college admissions counselors or future employers. Physical or sexual abuse. Some online predators use the Internet to befriend children or teenagers and attempt to set up face-to-face meetings. They may try to gain their victims' trust by talking at first about subjects such as music or clothes and then gradually introducing sex into the conversation, or they may bring up sex immediately. In either case, the perpetrators may pretend to be much younger than they are or make other false claims. Inadvertently sending photos to strangers. Not all sex offenders try to arrange face-to-face meetings. Some of them want to collect and distribute photographs of children or teenagers that can be used for pornographic purposes. Many children are used to exchanging school or other photos with friends and don't understand the dangers of sending pictures on the Internet. It's important to try to keep these dangers in perspective. It's unlikely that your child will become a victim of an online predator. Once they understand the dangers and how to stay safe, most children and teenagers use the Internet responsibly. However, these dangers are real, so you and your child need to learn about them and take steps to stay safe. Here are some ways to stay safe online. Talk these over with your child. Never give personal information to someone you meet on the Internet. Make sure your child knows that she should never give any personal information to anyone online, including her last name, telephone or cell number, address, credit card numbers, or even the name of her
school. Also make sure she understands that she shouldn't say anything she wouldn't say over the phone -- for example, that she's home alone. Never agree to a face-to-face meeting with someone you meet online. Explain to your child that on the Internet, people can easily lie about their age, interests, or where they live. Someone who claims to be a teenage girl could easily be a man who lives in another state or even country. Tell your child that if he'd like to have a face-to-face meeting with someone he's met online, he should tell you so that you can evaluate the situation and, if you approve of the meeting, go with him. Never respond to e-mail or other messages that seem weird or make you feel uncomfortable. Even if she doesn't give out personal information, your child or teenager may come across disturbing messages in her e-mail or on a social networking site. Tell her to leave a Web site if she sees anything that bothers her or sounds odd. Ask her to save any email messages and show you any Web sites that disturb her so that the two of you can discuss them and decide together what to do about them. Never give your Internet account or other passwords to anybody but a parent. Talk about some of the dangers that could occur if he gave the password to a Web site or his Internet account to one of his friends. What would happen if he and his friend had a fight? Or if the friend used the password in a place where somebody else might be watching, such as a library or school computer room? Never send photos to someone you've met online. Sending photos may seem harmless to your child. After all, the pictures don't contain information such as telephone or credit card numbers. But once a photo is e-mailed, she has no control over what happens to it, and it could INTERNET, continued on page 12

Italian police arrest 300 in raids on Calabrian mafia Story by Guardian.co.uk Italian police mounted one of the biggest crackdowns ever on the shadowy 'Ndrangheta mafia this week, seizing assets worth millions of euros and arresting 300 people including the organization’s alleged boss of bosses. The raids, in which 3,000 officers took part, were part of an investigation which has allowed a glimpse of the Calabrian mafia's new pyramid power structure and exposed its creeping control over businesses and politicians in northern Italy, where 160 of the arrests were carried out. The Italian senate stood to applaud the arrests, which were described by the Interior Minister, Roberto Maroni, as "absolutely the most important operation against the 'Ndrangheta in recent years. The Calabrian Mob has been hit in the heart of its organizational and financial structure." The arrests of leading members of many of the group's 150 clans, on charges ranging from murder to drugs and arms trafficking to loan sharking, was a blow "to the heart of the 'Ndrangheta's organisational and financial structure," added Maroni. Once a poor relation of Sicily's Cosa Nostra and the Neapolitan Camorra, the 'Ndrangheta started life kidnapping for ransom and hiding its victims in the mountainous wilds of Calabria before it entered the cocaine trade in partnership with Colombian
cartels and built its revenue to an estimated â‚Ź44bn, equal to the combined GDP of Slovenia and Estonia. With clan affiliation based on blood lines, turncoats have been rare and the 'Ndrangheta has kept a low profile, with the notable exception of the massacre of six men in Duisberg, Germany, in a clan feud in 2008. Magistrates believed the group was organized in a loose, federation with no overall leader. But after yesterday's dawn raids investigators said they now believe that, as it has grown, the 'Ndrangheta has adopted a pyramid-shaped hierarchy similar to Cosa Nostra, and was led by Domenico Oppedisano, 80, who was taken into custody in Rosarno, Calabria. Oppedisano was reportedly appointed head of the organization at the marriage of two children of bosses in August 2009 and assumed power at a banquet held at a shrine to the Madonna last September. In one wiretapped conversation he talked of 1,000 affiliates attending one mob congress. Oppedisano was "the reference point for the entire organization", brokering peace among factions in the south and dividing up public works contracts in northern Italy, police said. But wiretaps also revealed him to be a consensus seeker. "For the love of God, when you make a proposal, you listen to the
others to see what they think," he told one mobster. Oppedisano's rule extended to Genoa where his local commander, fruit and vegetable trader Domenico Gangemi, was arrested, and to Milan, the new economic hub for the 'Ndrangheta, where mob-backed businesses have allegedly sought building contracts for the city's Expo in 2015. In a region that has traditionally ridiculed the south for its fear of the mafia; local businesses were too scared to inform the police of any of hundreds of episodes of intimidation and extortion uncovered by investigators. Mob justice was equally tough on dissidents within the ranks. In 2008, Milan boss Carmelo Novella was murdered in a bar after he sought to break free from the control of his elders in Calabria. Investigators said that in addition to the arrest of the mob's current number one in Lombardy, Pino Neri, a number of local politicians, a health authority chief and four police men were under investigation for collaborating with the 'Ndrangheta. Such was the mob's sense of impunity in the north that a get together last October was held in a hall named after Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, a pair of magistrates murdered by the Sicilian mafia.Despite speaking in thick dialect to thwart police wiretappers, today's 'Ndrangheta mobsters are pol-
ished gangsters, said Calabria-based magistrate Giuseppe Pignatone. "This is the second and third generation," he said. "They are graduates and can count on a network of profes-
sionals, bureaucrats and politicians and therefore have the ability to infiltrate any part of Italy and abroad."

Two police officers escorted Domenico Oppedisano, center, thought to be the top 'Ndrangheta boss, in Reggio Calabria, Italy, after his arrest last week. As reported by ANSA, Italy captured Oppedisano in a huge sweep, judicial sources said. Domenico Oppedisano, 80, the equivalent of the 'boss of bosses' in the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, had been serving as so-called 'capocrimine' of the organ-
ization for a year, police said. The Italian Senate rose to its feet and applauded the news of the arrest. Oppedisano was reportedly appointed head of 'Ndrangheta, now Italy's most powerful mafia, at a wedding in 2009, and assumed his powers at a feast at a shrine to the Madonna on September 1. Police have already caught his alleged No.2, Antonio Latella, as operations against 'Ndrangheta were stepped up this year.

Sigonella food lovers will be happy to hear that this year’s edition of Festa dei Sapori del Mediterraneo (Mediterranean Flavors Festival) will be held in the Cassibile historic heart this weekend (July 23 through 25). This family-friendly festa is a unique culinary event showcasing fine ethnic dishes from Morocco, Tunisia, China, India and Sicily. The festival is organized by Associazione Donna, the Sicilian Region, the City of Siracusa and the Regional Province of Siracusa. Associazione Donna is a women-only Catholic association promoting social justice for women, respect for human rights, and cultural development of women in business, tolerance and nondiscrimination. Visitors will be able to sample scrumptious ethnic foods by browsing the festival booths that will be set up every evening, starting at 6 p.m., in piazza Caduti del Conte Rosso. The festival will open tonight at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Entertainment will be performed every night at 9:30 p.m.
Roaming panther caught on film, big cat snapped outside Palermo

(ANSA) - Palermo - A panther sighted over the past few weeks in the countryside around Palermo was photographed by forest rangers Wednesday night. The rangers said they had got several shots of the animal, which they have been trying to capture, with an infrared camera. It was lying on a rocky hillside spur on the southern outskirts of the Sicilian capital, they said. The panther was said to be an adult and not, as previously believed, a cub. The rangers are trying to establish its exact size. The big cat is thought to have escaped from a circus, zoo, or perhaps the home of a crime boss. Several top Italian mafiosi have been found to have private zoos and some have been known to threaten victims with wild beasts.
Knox still nurtures affection for jailed ex boyfriend, Pair give each other strength, says American
Magnolia
(ANSA) - Rome - Jailed American student Amanda Knox has said she still nurtures affection for the Italian ex-boyfriend who was convicted with her for the 2007 slaying of her British flatmate in Perugia. Knox, 23, was sentenced last December to 26 years in prison for Meredith Kercher's murder along with her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, who was given a 25year sentence. ''We often write to each other, we give each other strength,'' Knox said in an interview published in Wednesday's edition of weekly magazine Oggi.
' ' We have ended up in a surreal affair that we still don't understand. It's terrible, but at least it unites us. The affection remains from the love we had''. Leeds University exchange student Kercher, 21, was found with her throat cut on November 2, 2007 in the house she shared with Knox in the central town of Perugia. Knox and Sollecito, 26, both deny the killing and are appealing against the jail terms, as is a third convicted murderer, Ivory Coast native Rudy Guede, who was tried in a separate fasttrack procedure and is bidding to overturn a 16-year sentence. Knox was given a year more than Sollecito for having falsely accused a Perugia pub owner, Congo native Patrick Lumumba, of the killing in the early stages of the investigation. According to the prosecution, Sollecito and Guede held Kercher down as Guede tried to have sex with her and Knox threatened her with a knife, before delivering a fatal blow. DNA evidence that was already hotly contested in Knox's and Sollecito's first trial is expected to again be the focus of their appeals. Seattle-born Knox, whose good looks led to her frequently being called 'foxy Knoxy' in the media, also faces charges of slandering Italian police by saying during the trial that they had hit her in questioning. She said the haircut she displayed at a June hearing for the slander case, which gave her a very different appearance to the look she had at the murder trial, was a small protest against the ordeal she is going though. ''I cut my hair in part as a sort of act of rebellion to show that this situation is destroying me,'' she said. Under Italian law convicted criminals are entitled to two appeals. Knox and Sollecito's first appeal is expected to get under way later this year. The verdict
against Knox caused a strong reaction in the United States where 'pro-Amanda' groups have rallied to support her appeal. One of the United States' top lawyers, Ted Simon, president of the National Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers, will flank her Italian defence team. Guede, 23, had his sentence commuted from 30 to 16 years in his first appeal and his lawyers have taken his case to Italy's Supreme Court in a third and final bid to prove his innocence. Lumumba was released after 15 days in jail after an alibi confirmed he had been working in his city-centre pub on the night of the murder and police failed to find any evidence linking him with the crime scene.
Strait of Messina highspeed service begins operations (ANSA) - MESSINA 'Metropolitana del Mare', the high-speed service over the Strait of Messina using hydrofoils and catamarans, has recently begun operations in Messina. The fast service over the Strait will be overseen by a fleet of five boats linking Messina, Reggio Calabria, Villa San Giovanni and the airport of Reggio Calabria. Only the first, already existing service will be strengthened today, with an increase in the frequency of connections between Messina, Reggio Calabria and Villa San Giovanni. The service will soon be extended on a 'circular' route to the 'Tito Minniti' airport of Reggio Calabria. Current rates mean that an ordinary single journey between Messina and Reggio costs 3.50 euros, while a crossing between Messina and Villa San Giovanni costs 2.50 euros. The reduced price for those with salaries beneath 25,000 euros is one euro less. The link between the port of Messina and the new landing stage of Tito Minniti airport will cost 9 euros per crossing.

Naro, a hidden gem By Rebekah Jacobs
Some experiences in Sicily are well known and well lovedlike shopping for fruits and veggies in the Catania market or devouring gelato in Motta. But others are hidden, like secret treasures. After visiting with some local Italians, we discovered a new gem on the Sicilian map: Naro. Naro is the perfect stop on the way to Agrigento's Valle Dei Templi (Valley of the Temples). It's a medieval town whose thirteenth and fourteenth-century buildings warrant a look for their beauty and importance. This town has successfully preserved its magnificent Baroque legacy yet remains a secret from most American tourists. (Above) The sweeping views of Naro offer a beautiful sight for all to admire. (Below) The impressive Castello Chiaramonte is a must-see.

The road climbs 17km up, and the sweeping panoramic views down to the coast are remarkable. In fact, King Federico of Swabia named it "fulgentissima" because of its splendor and brightness. Because of Naro's strategic position, it is one of the highest towns in the Agrigento area. Naro is a big agricultural center and produces grapes, wheat, olives, citrus fruits and almonds. One can enjoy these treats at the different fairs in Naro, especially at their famous Black Saint, or Santo Nero, festival honoring their patron saint in June. While in Naro, stroll down Via Dante and enjoy delicious pasta and fresh bread for lunch. One can also admire the many magnificent monuments up and down this main street. The Chiesa del SS. Salvatore serves as a great example of Baroque architecture. The Church of the Saviour, stands on Via Cavour with its fine facade. The Jesuits built The Mother Church in the 17th century. Although one cannot enter it, it is a beautiful site to see. The Palazzo Muncipale (Municipality) houses the Bibliotheca and a small museum with local archeological findings. One can also marvel at the decorated faรงades and the former
Convent of Friars Minor with a charming cloister. The Santuario di S. Calogero is one of the most ancient sanctuaries of all of Sicily and maintains Santo Nero's crypt. The church was erected in the 16th century and significantly renovated in the Baroque age. Every June 18th, men and women carry the statue through town shouting and praising the saint in jubilation. After climbing many stairs to get there, one will not be disappointed when they reach the Castello Chiaramonte. This impressive castle was built in 1330 over earlier Norman fortifications. Inside the castle, there are incredible examples of the clothes the middle class women wore in the town. These elegant and intricate dresses are in perfect condition and have been donated for all to see. There's even a tribute to a woman who perished when her dress caught fire, and she could not remove it in time. Perhaps the most wonderful characteristic of Naro is the small town Sicilian hospitality one will find. The gracious people will be happy to point the way as you find these sites.

As devoted to their careers as they are to one another, they start conducting unauthorized experiments with new animal species that show great promise. Drunk with their godlike powers, they introduce human DNA into one of their creations, producing a creature that is greater than the sum of its parts: a rapidly developing animal/human hybrid that may be a step up on the evolutionary ladder. While this female creature inspires maternal feelings in Elsa, she evokes something farfrom-paternal in Clive, something that poses a threat to them all. ANGER, continued from page 2 withdraw from an anger-producing situation, turn our feelings inward where others cannot see them, act out by attacking the source of anger or some substitute, or face and deal directly with the cause of anger.” Hence, we must learn to appraise the situation thoughtfully, and face the source of anger directly and deal with it responsibly. I believe most of our anger is rooted in a blockage in our progress to meet a desired goal. This is where most frustration occurs in my opinion. Let’s think of an example from everyday life. Think of some parents trying to get a good night’s sleep (desired goal is sleep). However, their little infant had a different desired goal. Can you see the conflict? This is called a blockage. We must learn to ask ourselves some salient questions regarding our anger response. I mentioned at the beginning of this article that I would provide four concrete ways to deal with anger. Firstly, you must identify what is the real source of anger. Then ask yourself these salient questions: What is the root of your anger? Why am I feeling anger and not some other emotion? Do I have all of the facts? Am I jumping to conclusions about the situation or person who is making me feel angry? Did my anger come because I had some unrealistic expectations? Am I being selfish (“blockage”)? Is there another way to look at this situation? These questions will help put the situation into proper context. Secondly, angry outbursts must be restrained. This will be easier if you have already asked the right contextual questions. This is the application of self-control. How many times have you been in the middle of an outburst and the phone rings? You pick up the phone and calmly say, “Hello” as if all things are well in your world. This example demonstrates the human capacity to apply self-control. Thirdly, ruminating over the situation must be resisted as much as possible. You must resist replaying negative thoughts in the theatre of your mind; which is counterproductive. Fourthly, get some outside support and education on this subject. Interestingly, according to the American Psychiatric Association, anger is a normal human emotion. Therefore, it is not responsive to psychotherapy or psychotropic medication. It is also not listed in the Manual of Nervous and Mental Disorders (a psychopathology can certainly exacerbate anger). You can set up an appointment with your base chaplains to discuss your concerns by contacting 6243975. Our Fleet and Family Support Center is offering a class on the subject of Stress, Anger and Suicide on the 26th of August, please call 6244291 more information about registration. You can also visit this website http://www.whatsgoodaboutanger.co m for some useful information from a Christian perspective. So the next time you feel like you’re on the verge of exploding…think about the these steps to manage your anger reaction. INTERNET, continued from page 5 end up somewhere she doesn't want it. Never accept a password or email account from someone you've met online. Instruct your child to tell you if somebody tries to give him a password or new account. Some people try to set up new accounts for children so that they can communicate with them without arousing the suspicions of parents. When setting ground rules for Internet use, the most important thing you can do is make sure your child feels comfortable telling you about any problems she may run into online.
SOCCER, continued from page 1 been the primary goal.” And those plans are taking shape this month. As the youngest member of the Europe-based U.S. Youth Soccer Team, Jacks will compete in the under-18 “super group,” which includes 17- and 18-year old players on nationally ranked teams, including last year’s national champion. Even though he may be one of the youngest players at 15, he is still a competitive opponent at 5'10", 160 lbs. and has been clocked in the 40-yard dash at a quick time of 4.5 seconds. Given his size, speed, and skill, Jacks is expected to be more than just competitive. Prior to the Surf Cup XXX, Jacks was chosen to represent the Europe-based Olympic Development Program (ODP) at the U.S. Region 1 callback camp in Boston, MA. There, he will compete for a spot on the U17 Regional team/National pool. If he succeeds, he will have a chance for National Team exposure, leading to the U17 World Cup, taking place next summer. As a freshman at Sigonella High School, Jacks was the regular season leading scorer and an AllTournament and All-European Team selectee. To prepare for the upcoming tournaments, he has been playing with the Sigonella base soccer team, which is coached by his father, Cmdr. Thomas Jacks. In addition to kicking the ball around with the base team, Jacks' daily schedule is one of a determined player. He practices every day, does running and speed training three days a week and does weight training four days a week. His primary goal is to improve and one day, to compete in the World Cup and win. WARRIOR, continued from page 1 warrior. “We are a mentoring resource for all warriors to use.” Melissa is a returning warrior participating in the program. She and other members devote their time and efforts to mentor fellow returning warriors. Each warrior is known by their first name, without mention of their rank. This practice allows each warrior to be comfortable in sharing their experiences with warriors, not someone trying to diagnose the situation. “A problem with medical influences is that often the symptom is treated instead of the cause,” said Nate, another warrior participating in the program. “The cause in many cases is complex, a planned response programmed by the military but
dependant on a team and key resources for varying situations, when you remove the warrior from the field you take the team surroundings they have come to depend on and leave them without the key elements needed to cope with the response to a loud noise or an emotion invoking situation. We help treat the cause of the symptoms by bringing back a part of the field experience, the team, which makes things easier for us.” During a warrior’s homecoming meeting with family and friends, the most positive influence is the camaraderie and understanding of a peer mentor. Having someone listen to the stories and understand the feelings that are brought about with certain situations, ease pressures for participants. “You may not be able to talk to your spouse about the things you are thinking or that are going through your head,” said Melissa. “We provide an outlet for warriors to talk.” Ray likes the brotherhood feeling of the Warrior Mentorship Program. He has been in a hostile combat zone and appreciates the ‘comfort zone’ that he has with other mentors. “I enjoy hanging out with the guys at bar-b-ques and camping retreats,” said Ray. “We do things to benefit the many warriors that need mentoring.” The mentorship program allows each of the participants to share their understanding of situations and provide their perspective of issues based upon their own experiences in a hostile combat zone. “It is hard for us to accept what someone says when they have not been to a combat zone and try to tell us how to feel,” said Ray. “Each of us has been to one hostile environment or another and can relate to the feelings other Warriors may have.” Warriors determine the agenda items for each team building event. A formal meeting is held each month, which does not require a sign in sheet or anything to keep track of who is participating. This is strictly a means for warriors to help each other heal by sharing, listening and mentoring. “We welcome anyone that has experience in a hostile combat environment,” says Melissa. “The more warriors we have to participate, the more experiences we have to draw from.” The Warriors reflect on a coordinated event for Hospital Corpsman with a surprise firework display at the end. They thought it would be appropriate to advise everyone that was

Eno The uniform board recently came out with their rules and regulations, including a change to the Navy and Command Ball Cap. The approved uniform changes are as follows: Effective Immediately, Navy and Command Ball Caps are authorized for wear with the following uniforms only: wash khaki, utilities, physical training uniform, coveralls, and flight suit. Ball caps are not authorized for wear with the Navy Working Uniform (NWU)/ camouflage utility uniform (CUU) with the following exceptions: (1) When underway onboard U.S. Navy Vessels, ball caps may be authorized for wear with the NWU/CUU only by bridge watch teams and command training teams at the discretion of the commanding officer. (2) Ashore, ball caps may be worn with the NWU and CUU by command training teams during field excercises held in restricted areas to provide visual identification of supervisors, controllers and safety observers. This policy modification is allowed during the prescribed window of training/evolution. Wearing of ball caps is not authorized during transit to and from exercise events, or in the vicinity of the command area.
