NAS Sigonella firefighters heat up training

N

aval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Fire Department participated in a Mobile Aircraft Firefighting Training Device (MAFT-D) exercise. The exercise included a scenario with a live fire simulation on the flight line and a team of firefighters. "The purpose of this exercise is to keep the skills up on combat fires with aircraft," said Station Chief Mario Signorello. "We can simulate any type of fire on the structure of this simulator so it's very real to life." The MAFT-D exercise utilizes a variation of Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles and equipment to complete the evolution successfully. "We have the tactical apparatus that we use for aircraft emergencies and we also have structural pumpers for structural fires," said Signorello. In an event that a fire happens on the flight line, each person's

job is important and teamwork and communication become essential to safely diffuse the fire. "I am a crew chief for this exercise and my job is important because I am completely responsible for the crew and the truck, " said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Handler 2nd Class (AW) Corey James. The crew chief position has to lead his rescue crew through any operations they need to conduct. While the Navy has a need for fire teams at sea and shore based commands, the basic principles of fire fighting apply to all situations. "Aircraft carriers contain jet fuel so that is the most obvious hazard being at sea," said James. "Jet fuels burn at a really high temperature and that can be very hazardous. The procedure for fighting fires at sea and shore though are fairly similar. Establish a rescue path, create an entry to the aircraft, rescue any personnel and extinguish the fire." Check out more photos from the MAFT-D exercise on pages 8 and 9.

MARCH

I

n case you are too busy actually working, I would like to tell you that the first day of spring was on Tuesday. Additionally, I recommend that you set your clocks forward this Sunday, 25 March at 2 a.m. for Daylight Savings Time (DST). This week’s word is “exercise” or “fare ginnastica” in Italian. I notice a lot of folks running and walking around base, the weather is improving and the spring Physical Fitness Assessment or PFA is just around the corner. I encourage everyone to make the effort to get out and exercise. It was great to see the turnout for this year’s Base 2 Base Run. I miei complimenti (my compliments) to MWR. The Base 2 Base series was an excellent and well-run exercise venue this year and is in line with the Secretary of the Navy’s 21st Century Sailor and Marine initiative designed to maximize Sailor and Marine personal readiness, to maintain the resiliency of the force, and to hone the most combat effective force in the history of the Department of the Navy. Readiness and resiliency provide another example of this week’s word, although slightly different in Italian, “esercitezione”. We just completed an exercise called Re-

liant Defense 2012 and I must say I was pleased with the performance of the NASSIG community, specifically, the first-responders, fire and emergency services, security personnel and NCIS. I understand that some may have been inconvenienced by the closing of the NAS I gate and the requirement to shelter in place, but both measures are possible and even likely during an actual crisis and it is important that the community and the base prepare and train in a simulated environment that closely resembles what we expect in real crises. As we move through the spring and summer months, be aware that these training opportunities will continue and we use these exercises to ensure your safety. Lastly, I ask each of you to look around our base and ask…“what can I do to make Sigonella better?” I have noticed base organizations walking the grounds and picking up trash. I’m thankful for that and I encourage the entire community to follow suit. The appearance of the base reflects di-

rectly on the Navy and all who live here. Take some time and show some Sigonella PRIDE. Enjoy the spring, the improving weather and remember to think and act safely. Buona Giornata!

As designated by the U.S. Navy Memorial foundation (USNMF), 2012 is the Year of the Chief. Each year, the USNMF spotlight a naval group similar to commands recognizing individual achievements with the Sailor of the Year award. USNMF selection is based on leadership and the impact the group has on the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard community. Past groups that have been recognized include: SEALS, Sea Bees, Navy Medicine and Supply. "The Year of the Chief distinction is an honor and humbling," said Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Command Master Chief David Graham. "However, it is not a time of rest. We have to constantly mentor and grow our Sailors in order to meet the needs of our Navy and our nation." As every chief knows, a lot is expected from the chief 's mess during the Year of the Chief and every year. "Every chief should strive to be the best chief they ever met. We should demand nothing but the best from our mess and our Sailors," said AFCM Mike Padro, Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Deta-

chment (AIMD) Sigonella senior enlisted leader. " I expect nothing less than solid leadership. I want the mess to live up to the phrase 'ask the chief.' The only way we can do that is being actively engaged, being more visible and walking the deck-plates." Graham and Padro encourage chiefs to continue to focus on the Guiding Principles: deck-plate leadership, institutional and technical expertise, professionalism, character, loyalty, active communication, and sense of heritage. "Our Guiding Principles not only guide us but unite us and maintain us," said Padro. In the changing times of the U.S. Navy, the Guiding Priciples and the role of a chief are even more important. "It is harder today to stay Navy," said Graham. "Our Navy is only retaining the best and the brightest. So as chiefs, we must prepare our Sailors to become future chiefs and commanding officers. We must do this while simultaneously training them to be more competitive for the civilian workforce. One day our Sailors will become the leaders of our future Navy. They are worth the investment."

Around NAS Sigonella ... Cadets of DoDDs high school NJROTC program conduct annual military inspection

NAS Sigonella school kids learn about energy conservation BY MR2 GARY SPENCE NAS Sigonella Public Affairs

Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella elementary school students from Mr. Atkinson's class and Ms. Cagle’s Sure Start class learned about energy conservation from Builder 2nd Class Aaron Manfredi, public works building energy manager with the help of mascot "Brite." Together Manfredi and Brite, played by Lt. James Shefchik, visited the classrooms to teach tips on saving energy. “It was great to see the reactions from the children at DoDDs”, said Manfredi. “Any time you have a cartoonish figure such as Brite, kids seem to get a kick out of it. It also helps influence them and in turn they pass on what they’ve learned to their

parents. They’ll let mom or dad know, 'Hey! You left the light on in the kitchen! That’s wasting energy'.” Manfredi emphasized the importance of conserving energy, especially in today’s economic climate. “The reasons for energy conservation awareness are pretty obvious. It just makes financial sense. You can ease some of the strain from your personal budget," said Manfredi. "The Navy has these programs in place to make sailors aware that this is one of the easiest ways to save money for their own personal situations and for the Navy as well. That’s crucial these days.”

The Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC) held its annual military inspection on Monday, March 12, conducted by Area 13 Manager Capt. Dan Wenceslao. The inspections included administrative and supply inspections similar to those conducted annually by the U.S. Navy. Following the inspections, the NJROTC Cadets performed a pass and review and demonstrated their drilling ability. Individual awards were also presented to several cadets. BY MR2 GARY SPENCE NAS Sigonella Public Affairs On, Friday, March 16, Marines from Special Marine Air Ground Task Force Twelve (SPMAGTF-12) graduated from the Command Sponsored Corporals Course during a ceremony held at the NAS I theater. The purpose of the Corporals Course is to provide students the basic knowledge and skills necessary to be successful small-unit leaders. The intent is to instill a feeling of confidence in their leadership abilities. It is the foundation in the development of new leadership among the NCO ranks. Sgt.Maj. Patrick Llamas, corporals course director, emphasized the importance of the course. “Essentially, it’s developing small unit leaders and passing the baton. I equate it to a relay race in our careers. No matter how fast some runners are, it’s about the hand-off. If you miss that hand-off and don’t practice the little things, then something gets

missed and the baton gets dropped. That’s what we’re doing here, passing on the legacy and traditions of the Marine Corps and giving them that confidence to lead Marines when they get back their individual units.” The course included a total of 144.5 hours of instruction based on direct application of learned skills. The class was designed to move away from traditional classroom instruction of rote memorization and standardized testing, which has proven to be ineffective in the past. It involved everything from administrative duties to responsibilities on the battlefield. One of the graduates, Cpl Christine Hatfield, gave her perspective on how the class has helped her understand her new role in the Marines. “It’s a great course. It steps beyond just following orders and doing what our superiors need us to do into the leadership role that they now occupy and leading other Marines. We now have to step up and take the leadership position. That’s the purpose of the Corporals Course.”

Network the right way with a personal networking card Picture yourself in the following situation: a friend happens to introduce you to a person with amazing connections to a job you have always wanted and you are left scrambling to find a piece of paper, a pen, a pencil, a cocktail napkin, ANYTHING so you can write down your name and number in order to provide contact information for this individual to get in touch with you in the future. Does this sound like a professional way to network? Hopefully, your answer is “no." Do you really think someone is going to remember you in a positive light as “that guy who scribbled down his contact information on his stained dinner napkin with a crayon he snagged from a stranger’s kid?” Probably not. Have no fear, we have a solution for you! People often think they need to already be employed in order to have a business card. They're mistaken. You can make a business card for yourself that acts as your personal networking card. This card allows you to always have a reference on hand to give to any potential new contacts you meet at job fairs, various networking events or people you run into randomly that just so happen to have valuable information for your current job search. You never know who you might meet and what job opportunities your connections might lead to, so help yourself make the most out of any networking situation by making a personal networking card. Here is an example for you to reference. The first side lists your name, phone number and email address.

Joe Smith (555) 123-4567 JoeSmith@hotmail.com

Note the professional email address – no crazy nicknames, no symbols – just simple and straightforward. An address that includes your first and last name (or first initial and last name) is usually best. If you do not already have one, it's a good idea to set up a separate email account specifically for your job search – this way, you can ensure that you do not accidentally delete an important work-related email while scanning your personal messages and sending them to the trash folder. In addition, having a separate email account for your job search enables you to always know when you have received new job-related emails while also managing employment contacts and multiple job applications. The second side of your personal networking card should list three to five major accomplishments, awards or employment-related highlights: -Successful sales and marketing professional offering 15 years of experience in telecommunications - Received industry's top award in 2008 - Landed company's largest contract in 2011: $4.2M - Dedicated team leader and innovative thinker

For example, you could list that you have six years of supervisory experience, hold a degree in engineering or are a team player who works well in stressful situations. The possibilities are endless. Remember to make your highlights relevant and ensure that they say a lot about you in the limited space available (but don’t crowd your card with too much type!). A personal networking card can really help give you that extra “edge” during your job search and help you stand out against your competition. Do yourself a favor and make one today – if you need help or have any questions, please contact Sarah Conlan at 624-4291 or sarah.conlan@eu.navy.mil.

Sicilian Easter cakes to tempt your taste buds

K

The mournful Good Friday procession in Enna commemorates Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and is one of the most significant religious events of the Holy Week. On April. 6 , penitents belonging to city’s religious brotherhoods perform sorrowful parades throughout the historic center.

Holy Week in Enna “Stava Batti Matri dolorosa Iuxta Crocella lacrimòsa comu pentébbati filiu” (At the cross her station keeping, Mary stood in sorrow weeping when her Son was crucified). The words of this mournful medieval chant, which is sung on Good Friday to remember the sorrow of Mary at the foot of the cross, describe one of the most touching days of Settimana Santa, (Holy Week) during which, street processions and ceremonies are organized in most Sicilian towns. Every year, Holy Week, lasting from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, is one of the most prominent events in the religious life of Enna and Sicily. Street processions featuring decorated religious floats, representing the Passion of Christ, are carried out across the island. Elaborate life-size statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, which are mounted on top of richly decorated floats, are accompanied by penitents who mourn the Passion of Christ and rejoice for his resurrection. Enna’s Settimana Santa celebrations come straight from the Spanish Catholic traditions. Spaniards ruled Sicily from the 15th to the 18th century. Today, just as it happens in Andalucia and Latin America, processions featuring traditional costumes still show the intensity of the devotees’ mysticism. Good Friday is a day of penitence. Every year, thousands of visitors swarm Enna to see the fervent pilgrims belonging to different city’s Confraternite (confraternities). They walk slowly in procession wearing colorful robes and hoods through the cobblestone streets of the historic center while town bands play mournful melodies. Brotherhoods are citizen’s societies similar to medieval guilds, which date back to the period of the Spanish rule. They keep alive the religious heritage of the city. Over the centuries, these associations have been tasked with organizing religious and charitable activities. In the past, they played a leading role in the social life of the town providing spiritual and material assistance to the poor and the sick and even to the ones sentenced to death. In 1740, there were 34 confraternities. Today, there are only 15 and they include Confrati (members of the confraternities) belonging to all ranks and classes with the only exception ofwomen. In the past, confraternities were mainly composed of sulfur miners and farmers. The color of the robes and the mantel worn during the processions has a particular meaning that can be either related to the cult of their own patron saint or to the role that they played in the past in town. On Friday, Apr. 6, Enna Good Friday or Venerdì

Santo processions begin at 4:30 p.m. with the “Confraternity of the Passion” mournful parade leading once again the procession while carrying the 33 symbols and the insignia related to Jesus martyrdom that are called “Misteri.” Some among those include the cross, the purse with thirty pieces of silver, the crown, the lantern, the rooster, the nails, and the scourges, jug of water, gloves, etc. This emotional procession, which leaves from the Church of Saint Leonardo, is headed towards the Duomo or cathedral. As the confraternity proceeds in penitence along via Roma through the narrow streets of the city, the other fourteen Confraternite join this mournful religious parade. The procession follows a definite order. Brotherhoods parade from the most recent to the oldest. Over 2,500 hooded and silent penitents’ walk towards Church of Our Lady of Sorrows hosting a statue depicting the Virgin Mary. Then, this statue is taken to the cathedral where an Urna (urn) containing a life-size statue of dead Christ, was previously placed. At 7 p.m., the procession leaves from the cathedral and reaches the Church of St. Paolini near the cemetery, where a benediction is given with the Reliquary cross, which, according to the tradition contains a thorn from the crown of Christ. Eventually, the procession returns to the Cathedral. Later, the two statues are taken back to the churches. On April 8 (Easter Sunday), in the morning, Pasqua is celebrated at the church of S. Salvatore at 10 a.m. Later in the evening, Paci (peace), a ceremony symbolizing the encounter of resurrected Christ with the Virgin Mary, begins at 6 p.m. Two statues depicting Jesus and his mother are carried on the shoulders of confraternity members and taken from the churches of S. Salvatore and S. Giuseppe to piazza Mazzini where the Paci is eventually staged. As soon as Christ appears, the black veil covering the statue of the Lady of Sorrows comes down. At that point, the statues run toward each other and after that, are taken inside the Cathedral. Sunday, April 15, marks the day of the melancholic “Spartenza” ceremony, which takes place in piazza Mazzini. The two statues, which participated in the Paci on Easter day, are taken back to the churches where they are usually kept. The statue of Christ goes back to church of SS. Salvatore, and the Virgin Mary one is taken Church of San Giuseppe. For more information, detailed schedules and guided tours’ opportunities call Enna Tourist Office at 0935-529111.

nowing the importance of food in the Sicilian culture, it should be no surprise that home cooks and pastry chefs get very busy during Easter. As the Sicilian saying goes "Aviri cchiu' chiffari di lu furnu di Pasqua," (be busier than an oven during Easter), during the Easter holiday, Sicilians bake a lot of scrumptious pastries that are still prepared according to secret ancient recipes handed down from Sicilian nuns and Moorish bakers. Italy gives state funeral to Mafia martyr (Story by ANSA)

Rome - Italy decided last Friday to grant a state funeral to Placido Rizzotto, a Socialist trade unionist slain by the Mafia in 1948 for fighting for land reform. Rizzotto's remains, which were recently identified , were discovered in 2009 in a cave outside Corleone, a small town near Palermo notorious for Mafia activity and made famous by the Godfather films. The decision to grant a state funeral came after a week-long campaign that went viral on Facebook and Twitter. "It's an important acknowledgement that sprang forth spontaneously from the public," said Placido Rizzotto's nephew, who is named after his uncle. Mafia boss Luciano Liggio was tried for Rizzotto's abduction and murder but acquitted for insufficient evidence. A shepherd boy who witnessed the murder, Giuseppe Letizia, was killed by the Mafia. Rizzotto, an ex-partisan and member of the leftwing CGIL union who became a banner for the fight against the Mafia, was 34 when he disappeared. His remains went missing amid a police probe led by Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, who climbed to the rank of Carabinieri general and was killed by Cosa Nostra boss Nitto Santapaola in 1982. A group that uses land taken from the Mafia to grow crops has been named after Rizzotto. Funeral arrangements were to be made as soon as the analysis of the remains was complete. Rizzotto's nephew paid tribute to the numerous trade unionists who have been killed by the mafia and whose killers have never been brought to justice. "The state funeral for my uncle will be for all of those unionists," he said.

FINRA Foundation Military Spouse Fellowship application Water distribution corrosion control period open until March 31 BY LT ANDREW LEYONMARK WASHINGTON — Now in its seventh year, the FINRA Investor Education Foundation's Military Spouse Fellowship Program has opened the application process for its class of 2012 military spouses. The FINRA Foundation Spouse Fellowship Program provides military spouse recipients with the education and training needed to earn the Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) designation. Military spouses can apply to become a member of the 2012 class of fellows until March 31, 2012. The Military Spouse Fellowship is administered in partnership with the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education® (AFCPE®) and the National Military Family Association. The program covers the costs associated with completing the AFC® training and testing for military spouses. More information is available at www.SaveAndInvest.org/MilitaryCenter. Applications are accepted online at www.MilitaryFamily.org/FINRAFellowship and are due by midnight EST March 31, 2012. "Challenging economic times make it vital that military families receive the support and information they need to manage their money with confidence," said Gerri Walsh, president of the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. "Across the United States and throughout the world, FINRA Foundation spouse fellows are working every day to help their local military communities, while at the same time developing valuable career skills and expanding their employment opportunities."

Spouse fellows have logged more than 306,000 hours helping military families reach their financial goals, and 314 spouse fellows have graduated from the program. Accredited spouses serve the military community as financial counselors at family readiness and support centers, credit counseling and tax centers, financial aid offices and credit unions throughout the U.S. and abroad. These organizations are in need of well-trained specialists who understand the unique financial needs of military families. "The FINRA Foundation's Military Spouse Fellowship Program has given me the information I need to provide great service to my clients in the area of financial readiness," said 2008 graduate Shay TullCook. Tull-Cook is currently a Family Support Services Specialist, where she manages the Financial Management, School Liaison, Deployment Readiness, Scholarship and Adoption Reimbursement Programs for the entire Coast Guard. Full biographies of selected accredited spouse fellows are available at www.SaveandInvest.org/MilitaryCenter. The Military Spouse Fellowship Program is open to current or surviving spouses of active duty or retired Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard or Reserve servicemembers, as well as spouses of members of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps.

NAS Sigonella Public Works

After a long weekend, Sigonellans will sometimes notice that their tap water is somewhat discolored. This discoloration is completely harmless, caused by rust in the water piping due to pipe corrosion. Though it may seem or smell dirty, the concentration of impurities still meets drinking water standards. Running the water for a minute or so will remove the discoloration, but it is perfectly safe and potable regardless of how it looks. The real risk of the pipe corrosion is that it can lead to pipe ruptures, blockages, and decreases in water pressure to facilities. From September through November of 2011, NAVFAC contracted CDM to perform an engineering study on Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella's water distribution network to evaluate corrosion. The objective was to identify the cause of corrosion in the piping and determine the appropriate solution. A common corrosion mechanism in water distribution piping is a chemical reaction between the pipe and its surrounding environment causing the material to weaken. In buried pipes, corrosion often takes place in the pipe interior and is manifested by areas of discolored, brittle material and scale deposits. The quality of the water, measured by pH, conductivity, dissolved materials, hardness, etc., plays a key role in the rate of corrosion – much in the same way that the rate at which a car will rust

varies depending on the climate. In galvanized pipes, like NAS Sigonella's older, water distribution network, a protective zinc oxide layer protects the underlying steel to prevent rapid corrosion. This zinc layer, however, can become corroded if the right (or perhaps wrong) conditions exist. In 2005, the existing electrodialysis water treatment plants on base were replaced with a reverse osmosis plant. The newer, more energy efficient system removes a larger percentage of the minerals from the ground water than the old system previously did. As a result, without the minerals, the treated water has a greater capacity to remove the zinc layer and cause corrosion. The majority of the water mains have been replaced over the years with high density polyethylene (HDPE) piping that does not corrode; however, many of the lateral pipes leading into the buildings remain as galvanized steel. Public Works is coordinating a project to provide additional treatment in the water plant to address and mitigate corrosion concerns. The water treatment will slightly increase water hardness on base but will help prolong the life of NAS Sigonella's water distribution network. For the time being, Public Works will stand by to respond to water line breaks, patching and repairs to keep the water flowing in support of the Hub of the Med.

NAS Sigonella hosts annual Base 2 Base Run

BY MR2 GARY SPENCE NAS Sigonella Public Affairs

On Saturday, March 17, NAS Sigonella held its annual Base 2 Base 7.6 mile run, the final run of the Base 2 Base series. Having just arrived in October, this was my first Base 2 Base Run. It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day! Maybe from a runner’s perspective it did start out a little bit warm. But for me, having arrived here during the winter months and with all the foul weather we’ve had lately, it was a nice change. I actually got a little sunburned. With right around 500 participants, it was a phenomenal turnout. It was really great to see so many people come out for an event like this. The post-race festivities were equally impressive. After coming through the finishing chute, participants were greeted with live music from Connections. After

catching their breath, getting some water or Gatorade, participants could walk over and purchase a lunch. Green beer was even available. After all, the Base 2 Base Shamrock series race just happened to fall on St. Patrick’s Day. The overall atmosphere of the Base 2 Base Run was fantastic and well organized. It reminded me of any other run I would have done back home in the states thanks to everyone that helped put this together. According to MWR's Jaime Andrews, “This year's Base 2 Base Run was the biggest and best yet, thanks to all the volunteers, employees and participants.” Race results and photos are available for viewing www.facebook.com/mwrsigonella. Mark your calendars for the Motta Extreme Trail Run, Saturday, April 28.

The Base 2 Base overall winner was Mario Bonaccorso of 41st Stormo with a time of 44:27:06. (Photo by Jamie Andrews)
