Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella recently hosted Urban Search and Rescue instructors from Bucks County Community College Certification and Curriculum Public Safety Training and Certification team for a two-week Structural Collapse Rescue Technician course, attended by 18 firefighters from Navy Region Europe, Africa &
Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA). The purpose of the course was to provide the firefighters with an opportunity to receive a quality education in the fields of public safety operation and management, public safety professional certification, emergency management and industrial safety that will enhance their ability to deliver life saving services, in a manner consistent with specific work practices and while maintaining their safety, as
well as the safety of their co-workers and the public they serve. Fire & Emergency Services personnel from NAS Sigonella Sicily, Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Italy, NSA Souda Bay Crete, NSA Bahrain and Naval Station Rota Spain learned advanced techniques for stabilizing damaged structures, utilizing heavy equipment to breach walls and floors, and locating entrapped victims.
“This training prepares firefighters to perform rescue operations following earthquakes, mud slides, flood, structural decay, transportation accidents along with acts of terrorism anywhere in the region,” said Jim LaConte, NAS Sigonella’s Fire Chief. ”This was a great opportunity for Fire & Emergency departments throughout the region to work with one another and learn from each others experiences.”

E n e r g y S m a r t : Yo u r P r i c e f o r E n e r g y By: Brian Scott Not long ago I wrote an article "Paying the Ultimate Cost for Energy" in the Signature for the April 5 coal mine explosion where 29 coal miners’ lives were lost in West Virginia. On April 20 we lost another 11 workers to the BP explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, and we now have an uncontrollable environmental disaster that affects all of
us. Saving energy may sound trite, but it may save lives and our environment. So we ask all of you to help in saving energy. In addition to saving energy, the US NAVY is committed to developing new alternative renewable resources that will aid in saving lives, and the environment. Currently at Sigonella we have three solar energy projects underway that were funded by Congress. Another three
solar projects are in development. But we also need your help. What you can do. Use task lighting; instead of brightly lighting an entire room, focus the light where you need it, to directly illuminate work areas. Turn off lights when you leave at night. Unplug equipment that drains energy when not in use (i.e. cell phone chargers, fans, coffeemakers, desktop printers, radios, etc.). As we serve our country to keep it
free, let us also serve our country by saving energy. “Ask not now what your country can do for you - but ask what you can do for your country. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.” President Kennedy Inaugral address January 20 1961.

LPS/RPS Survey Results in Italy Leave COLA Mostly Unchanged By MC2 Marc Rockwell-Pate Commander Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia Public Affairs Office
NAPLES, Italy — A message released June 15 by the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) stated the outcome of the 2010 Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) Living Pattern Survey (LPS) and Retail Price Survey (RPS) has resulted in no COLA change in Naples and Sigonella, Italy. “Because of good overall participation in the LPS, the results of the RPS were very accurate and appropriate, resulting in a positive result for many of our service members in the region,” said Francesca Rodriguez, the 2010 COLA country coordinator.
Weather update
Though there are no changes in Naples and Sigonella, military personnel in Gaeta will experience a 2 point drop in their COLA amount. With each point equating to nearly $26, this will result in roughly a $52 decrease in COLA. Along with Gaeta, personnel stationed in Ghedi and Livorno, Italy, will also see a drop in COLA rates. “The decrease in Gaeta, Ghedi and Livorno are due to prices in U.S. rising faster than Italian prices,” said Rodriguez, the Commander Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (CNREURAFSWA) regional program director. “For all three locations, the analysis showed that nine of the fourteen categories experienced decreases compared to prices
in the U.S. The most significant decreases were found in the furniture, household and transportation categories.” All recommendations for change resulted from analysis that was forwarded to a Military Advisory Panel (MAP) for a vote. On June 8, the MAP voted in favor of the changes and forwarded the results to the Principals for approval. “Principals have 30 days to respond to and approve the recommended decreases,” said Rodriguez. “Once approved, the decreases will take effect beginning Sept. 1, 2010.” The living Pattern Survey (LPS) is conducted every three years to determine the names of the local economy outlets where military families shop
and the data reported in this survey is used to adjust the COLA along with the annual RPS. The Retail Price Survey (RPS) collects the price of 120 goods and services from the local economy outlets. COLA rates throughout Italy can still increase or decrease due to changing exchange rates as well as other economical factors. These fluctuations are independent of the results from the latest LPS/PRS in Italy. Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia is responsible for providing efficient and effective shore service support to U.S. and allied forces operating at our installations. Direct Line Going green. It’s the buzzword of today. From building new technologies (and new building technologies) to creating more aggressive energy programs, people around the world are noticing the Navy’s efforts to reverse the trends of waste demonstrated in the past and better the way we use energy in our day-to-day operations. This effort can be seen in several of our recent success stories: The Makin Island, a Navy built “hybrid” amphibious assault ship, which upon her release to the fleet saved a

We then amazed people again with our "Green" F/A-18 Super Hornet which on “Earth Day” 2010 completed a supersonic demonstration while using a first time ever 50/50 mixture of JP-8 jet fuel and biofuel. So what does this have to do with you? While it is not our job to build energy efficient ships or planes, we are in the

A tan complexion was once considered a sign of health and youth. In reality, tanned skin is damaged skin. Any change in complexion from being outdoors indicate damage from Ultraviolet rays. Each year, people seek the glow by laying out in the sun or in tanning booths. Some get it from a spray. Can something that exudes youth and appeal be harmful? Believe it or not, it only takes a few serious sunburns to increase your risk of skin cancer later in life. You don’t even have to be at the pool, beach or on vacation to get too much sun. Just being outdoors, exposes you to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Never forget how important your skin is. It covers and protects everything inside your body. Here are some ways to save your skin from sun damage: SEEK SHADE. UV rays are most harmful during midday. Because of this, try to plan activities indoors if possible. If not, seek shade! COVER UP. While long sleeves and long pants protect best, it may not be practical at a beach or outdoors. A T-shirt, long shorts, or a beach coverup are good choices too but it’s always wise to double up on protection! Apply sunscreen and stay in the shade when possible. HAT UP. Hats provide shade to the face, scalp, ears, and neck. They are easy to use and give great protection. While baseball caps are popular, they

don’t provide shade to the ears and neck. If you are a Yankees fan like myself, or would like to wear a cap, make sure to apply sunscreen to the exposed areas. WEAR SUNGLASSES. Sunglasses are more than a fashion statement. They were actually designed to protect your eyes from the harmful rays which may lead to cataracts. In addition, sunglasses provide better visibility in bright areas. APPLY SUNSCREEN. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and UVA and UVB protection every time you go outdoors. Apply it generously, 30 minutes before exposure. Pay close attention to your ears, noses and lips as most people forget these areas. You should reapply the sunscreen especially if you swim or exercise. Following these steps will help protect your skin, however a combination of them, will provide the best protection. Don’t be fooled by a cool and cloudy day. The sun’s rays can damage your skin year-round. So pack that sunscreen. If you’re still after that sunkissed glow without exposing your skin to the damaging rays, a safe compromise would be sunless tanning products. They are commonly sold as creams, gels, lotions and sprays you apply to your skin. Topical sunless tanning products are generally considered safe alternatives as long as they are used as directed. business of being aware of our energy usage and every little act towards that helps the Navy and NAS Sigonella reach its energy goals. Energy conservation programs have been around longer than many Sailors have been in the Navy. However, it's still common to walk into an empty office and find the lights on or a computer running. Help us by doing your part. If a light is on and no one is using it -- turn it off. Shut down office equipment at the end of the workday. We lose a ton of
money paying for energy used on weekends when no one is even in the office, since office equipment tends to be left on due to carelessness. So how much can we really save from turning off a couple lights? Last year during our Kill-AWatt program, we discovered that we could save $210 a day just by turning off unused equipment during lunchtime. That’s over 76,000 dollars a year just for conserving energy for two hours a day, five days a week. Switching off a light
may not seem like a big deal, but over time, and across the entire organization the money saved can be used for warfighting equipment.

Too Many Things In This Life... Someone once said, “Too many things in life are difficult” I wholeheartedly agree with this poignant observation about life. Undoubtedly, interpersonal relationships are some of the most challenging to maintain. A person skilled in successfully managing interpersonal relationships is worth their weight in palladium. In the movie Fireproof, Kirk Cameron, plays Capt. David Holt, a fearless firefighter who lives by the old firefighter’s adage: You never leave your partner behind. At work, his days are filled with burning buildings, hissing flames, and burning embers. At home, his days are marked by an empty house (though his wife is home), smoldering intimacy, and the cooling embers of an embittered relationship. If you’ve seen this movie, you know how severe their relational problems were. What went wrong?
He was more committed to his work than he was to his marriage. The problem was rooted in the couple’s interpersonal relationship. I’d like to spend some time talking about interpersonal relationships. By nature, humans have a need to communicate, some are more gregarious than others, but humanity has this need. That’s how our Creator made us. Nonetheless, human relationships are difficult to manage. Our life on this terrestrial ball makes this clear. The ability to maintain and nurture interpersonal relationships is an invaluable skill. It is a skill. It is a learned skill. I’m quite sure that at some point in your life you’ll encounter a difficult person. You know exactly what I mean. Perhaps you know one. Perhaps you’ve dated one. Perhaps you’ve married one. Perhaps you’ve worked for one. Perhaps you’ve employed one. Perhaps you’ve given birth to one. Perhaps you were parented by one. Perhaps you’re one! Anthropologically speaking, human beings are complex creatures with variegated personalities. We live on a crowed planet. Chances are you’ll meet a difficult person in this life. The point is that relationships are hard enough with friendly people, a difficult person needs extra effort! It usually doesn’t take long to pick these folks out in a crowd. Gary R. Collins, a psychologist and lecturer at Purdue University observed, “Some people have the erroneous belief, for example, that the best way to motivate others is to put people under pressure. NMCRS Helps Military Families Budget for Baby available through both governBy Mass Communication Specialist 3rdClass MichelleRhonehouse Navy Region Southwest Public Affairs
SAN DIEGO - The transition into parenthood can be a stressful time for all pay grades and spouses alike, especially if not prepared financially. The Navy Marine Corp Relief Society (NMCRS) holds Budgeting for Baby classes designed to educate new or prospective parents about the impact a new baby can have on the financial situation of a family. "The information provided in this class is beneficial for everyone, from the most senior officers to the lowest ranking junior enlisted," said Barry White, director of the San Diego NMCRS office. "The expenses are significant regardless. Any financial planner would tell you that the more information you can gather, the better prepared you will be to meet your expectations." Active duty, retired Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their family members can learn about increased expenses, pressure from consumers that are targeted to new parents and entitlements
ment and private sources. "We provide information on what a baby realistically costs and what different products are out there on the market. These range from diapers and formula to car seats and strollers," said White. "We also explain the different programs in the area, such as the Women, Infants, and Children program, Armed Services YMCA and the Fleet and Family Support Centers that are out there to assist the families." White added that the Budgeting for Baby program gives out free gifts at the end of each class. Layette bags are given after the two-hour course to those who attend. The bag consists of items such as baby one pieces, sheets for the crib and a handmade gift from a society volunteer. "Baby items are expensive. The layette bag provides a nice starting place for the parents and it helps save them the expense of having to purchase some first time baby items," said White. "It is essentially a starter kit for the baby." Registration for these classes is offered at all NMCRS locations. Class times and dates vary on location.

PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM HARMFUL EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT Article Source: ADAPTED FROM MILITARY ONE SOURCE Get your children into the habit of taking precautions before spending a day in the sun, including the following: Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas, including the face, neck, ears, eyelids, and under the chin. Use a lip balm that has sunscreen to protect the lips. Use a sunscreen that has a rated sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. The SPF rating will appear on the product label. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Test a little on the inside of the arm to check for allergic reactions. Even though many sunscreen products claim to be waterproof, reapply every hour or so, and after swimming, to protect from loss in potency from water or perspiration. Avoid taking newborns in the sun.
If you must, cover them with a lightweight hat, pants, and longsleeved shirt. Sunscreen is not recommended for children under 6 months of age. Use non-PABA sunscreen products for infants' sensitive skin. Check the product's ingredient label for any indication of PABA. There are also sunscreens made for use on infants and small children; consult a pharmacist. If you are planning a day at the beach or any outing where you'll be in the sun for a long time, be sure to bring sources of shade and protection, like a large beach umbrella, sun visors, hats, T-shirts, and extra beach cover-ups. If you can't bring an umbrella, be sure there is a source of shade nearby. Dress children in lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothes. Encourage them to wear a hat or sun visor and sunglasses. Avoid being outdoors during mid-
day when the sun's rays are most intense. Encourage children to play in the shade and limit their outdoor activity to 30 minutes when it's very hot or humid. Provide plenty of liquids and juicy fruits like melons, oranges, and peaches. Dilute fruit juice with water; sugary juices tend to increase thirst. If a child is taking antibiotics, keep her out of the sun during the hours when the sun is strongest -between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Some antibiotics and other medications magnify the effects of sun exposure. Be sure to ask your pediatrician or pharmacist about possible sun-related side effects of any prescription medications. Contact your local Fleet and Family Support Center at 624-4291 for further information and referrals if needed.
Make Your Summer BBQ Safe By: ALFIO MUSUMECI FIRE INSPECTOR NAS SIGONELLA FES Your BBQ has been sitting for a while and it's that time of the year to pull it out and get it ready for summer, but who knows what may be lurking under that BBQ top. Here are some steps that you should follow to make sure your BBQ is safe and ready for its debut. Things You Will Need: - Paint Brush - Sponge - Dish Soup - Grill scrubber 1. BBQ Webs -Don't be surprised if you find some spider webs under your BBQ lid. They also like to hide in other nooks and crannies. Use a paint brush to start knocking the webs down. Spiders will also build nest inside the venturi tubes, which are located between the control valves and the burners, if you think that there might be some in yours, then use a pipe cleaner to get them out. 2. BBQ Rust - Inspect for any rust on your grates, which can happen during the winter time. If you find rust on the grates, it may be better to just measure and go buy replacement grates. You don't want rust on your food. If you want to try to clean them try a mixture of cream of tartar and peroxide and scrub the grate. Spray Pam on your grill when you are done. 3. Surprise - Do a safety check on the gas supply hoses. Replace the flexible gas hose if it is cracked or brittle. If you are not sure, then use the dish soap test to check. Mix a little soup and water and brush it on to the fit-
tings and gas lines to see if any bubbles form which would indicate a leak. 4. Grease - If you have trays on the bottom of your grill, remove the grates and take the trays out and wipe them out. If you have grease overflow wipe that out before you go to step 5. 5. Clean -The fats from foods actually help keep the grates from rusting, but it can be so built up over time that you want to get rid of some of it. Heat up your grill and put water on your scrub brush and let the heat from the grill create steam from the water on the brush. 6. Flame - Check for the color of your flame. It should be bright blue. If the flame is orange then you will want to use a wire or a paper clip to clean and remove any corrosion around the burner. 7. Outside - Finish off by cleaning the outside of your BBQ grill. Formula 409 works well to remove grease and grime or you can use Dawn liquid soap and a sponge to wash down the grill and then rinse off with your hose When it comes to your home cook outs and Command Function grilling, safety is up to you. Make sure and follow all the rules outlined in the 11320.2H to ensure that your event is a safe success. All fund raising bar-b-q require a "Festival Cooking Permit". If any organization is planning to sell food to the public, please contact the Fire Prevention Office prior to the event and set up a time for inspection of the cooking area. Thank you and have a safe Forth of July bar-b-que.

Summer Music Festival begins in Mascalucia The lineup for the 2010 edition of the Mascalucia Summer Festival, which will be staged at the Trinità-Manenti Park, has been announced. As it happens every year in Mascalucia, the summer season offers an incredibly rich array of jazz & blues, folk, world and classic music concerts. The first concert for this season will feature Italian folk singer and composer Angelo Branduardi who will perform on Thursday, July 8. The next concert for the festival is the one by Premiata Forneria Marconi, a legendary Italian progressive rock band from the 1970s, which will be held on
Friday, July 9. This exciting minimusic festival will come to a close on Monday, July 12 with the performance of Italian folk band Modena City Ramblers. All concerts will begin at 9:30 p.m. As reported by Progarchives.com, Italian folk singer and composer ANGELO BRANDUARDI was born in Cuggiono, in the Milan area. Later, his family settled in Genoa where Angelo got his violin certification at the "Niccolò Paganini" music academy and started playing as a soloist with the orchestra of the Academy. At the age of fifteen he moved again,
this time to Milan, in order to attend high school, where he was taught by the great poet Franco Fortini. After that, he took up Philosophy at university; during that time he started composing, putting the texts of his favorite authors into music. "Confessioni di un malandrino" (Hooligan's Confession) by the Russian poet Sergej Esenin, one of his most famous songs, dates indeed from those years. Still very popular to this day, Music continued on page 12
New Italian Dads to be Forced to Stay at Home Four day’s leave on full pay. People of Freedom and Democratic Party in agreement. Italy follows Europe’s example (Story by Corriere della Sera) ROME – No more taking holidays, partly because it’s not a restful time. No discretionary leave either since the boss may not be sympathetic. And no lunchtime dashes from office to maternity ward and back. As they can in most parts of Europe, new dads in Italy could soon be able to forget the sacrifices and subterfuges they have used to enjoy those precious first hours with their new heir. “Compulsory paternity leave” is the title of the bills that the Chamber of Deputies started to examine last Wednesday morning. If the bills get through, fathers will no longer have any choice. When their child is born, they will have to take four days’
leave. It will no longer be optional, as it is under existing legislation. Paternity leave will become compulsory, like the five months that new mums have to take off before and after childbirth. But there will be no loss of pay because the four-day break will be at the expense of the employer or, in the case of the selfemployed, of the healthcare system. Dads will be treated like mums, more or less. The message is that right from the start, looking after baby is a family effort, not a woman’s job, but a duty and a delight that both parents share. Is this the stuff of dreams, particularly at a time of credit crunches and belt-tightening? Perhaps not. Currently, two very similar bills are before Palazzo Montecitorio’s employment committee. One is from the Democratic Party (PD), proposed by Alessia Mosca with 25 other signatories, while the other was present-
ed by the People of Freedom’s (PDL) Barbara Saltamarini and signed by 36 colleagues. Ms Mosca, who tabled the PD bill, explains: “Europe is forcing us to raise the retirement age for women to 65 but it would be a good thing to adjust the balance at another stage of life, looking after children, which cannot be left to women alone”. The four days are considered symbolic, representing the first step on a very long journey. The presenter of the PDL bill, Barbara Saltamarini, says: “The real aim is to move from equal opportunities to equal responsibilities, which means moving from safeguarding women to a system that enables families to organize themselves”. There is a positive example in Portugal, which introduced compulsory leave for fathers in 2002. Up till Dads continued on page 12

Girlfriends by Jamie Andrews Protestant Women of the Chapel

I’m a girly girl. I like malls and clothes. I like pretty things. My husband is a manly man. He likes cars, videogames and ultimate fighting. These differences can cause conflict sometimes, and millions of women are in the same boat. Our eyes light up when we arrive at a new shopping center, anxious to run past the brilliant window displays and begin tearing through the racks looking for deals on the latest fall fashions to try on for ourselves! Turn and look at our men. They would rather die. Let’s face it ladies, we need each other! There are some women who say they don’t have girlfriends. “All my friends are guys,” they say, “I get along with them better.” I never got that. Without girlfriends, who could I refer to for advice on important life
decisions, like, what should I wear? A guy will say, “Whatever. Anything is fine.” A girlfriend says, “It’s supposed to be casual. You should wear that new blouse you got last week with your black capris and those sandals I like.” I love the kind of friend who knows my wardrobe. No offense to our men. We need them too and God knows we love them. But without girlfriends, who would drop their plans to burn old love notes and have ice cream pigouts with us after breakups? Who would throw us bachelorette parties and showers? Who would bring us meals when we come home from the hospital with new babies? At age thirty-something I have outgrown many things, but girlfriends are not one of them. I had my first military PCS experience a year and a half ago when I came to Sigonella. It’s stressful moving across an ocean into an

Siracusa: Stimulating for the mind, relaxing for the body By IT3 Michael Aumann photos by IT3 Bryan Miller NAS Sigonellas Public Affairs Siracusa has been attracting visitors to it for over 2000 years. The city offers visitors a chance to see sites of great historic and religious importance. It also offers visitors a place to relax in the sun with its beautiful beaches. The ITT trip started off with an hour long bus ride to Eurialo Castle. We were allowed to climb through the fortress walls and were treated to panoramic views of the city. Next, we were able to escape the heat of the mid day sun with a cooling tour through the catacombs, an underground cemetery consisting of
chambers or tunnels with recesses for graves, at the Chiesa di San Giovanni. Walking only one block, the Santuario Madonna Delle Lacrime offered a spectacular and dizzing view up to its apex. While spending hours taking in these beautiful sites, there was still plenty of time to enjoy the afternoon at Fontane Bianche. The ITT trip provided bus transport from NAS 1 and NAS 2 to Siracusa, a guided tour of the sites, and entrance to the private beach. You will need to bring additional Euros to gain entrance to some of the sites. Sandals are great for the beach, but you should also bring shoes for the guided tours, as some of the terrain is a little bit rocky. Site: 4 Stars
The Eurialo Castle is a fortress built by the Greeks to defend Siracusa. Though very little of the once impenetrable castle still remains, it is easy to see why the Carthaginian invaders did not even try to attack it. The catacombs at the Chiesa di San Giovanni gives you a glimpse into the early Christian burial grounds. They were entombed in what formerly were aqueducts because the Romans did not allow them to be buried within the city limits. The Santuario Madonna Delle Lacrime is a sanctuary where the famous Madonna of Tears is displayed. The plaster plaque was said to have produced a liquid that had the same exact chemical make-up of human tears.

Fontane Bianche provides you with all the makings for a great day at the sea, including a restaurant, plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas, changing rooms, showers, and bathrooms. Family Friendly: Four Stars Small children may not be very interested in some of the history of the sites, but they may enjoy climbing around on the rocks at the Eurialo Castle and running through the tunnels in the catacombs at the Chiesa di San Giovanni. What kid doesn't love splashing around in the water and building sand castles at the beach. Accessibility : 5 Stars Thanks to the ITT bus, travel to Siracusa was very easy. The bus picks you up at NAS 1 and NAS 2, and takes you to the Eurialo
Castle, with a bathroom/snack break just prior to arriving there. It then takes you to a central location in Siracusa where the other sites are just a short walk away. After the tours are done, the bus drops you off at the beach, and returns for pick up at a time decided by the group. For those intereted in traveling via personal vehicle, you can get to Siracusa by driving south on the E45. Travel Time: 5 Stars The ride to the Eurialo Castle is about an hour from NAS 1, with the other sites being a short ten minute ride away from the fortress. Fontane Bianche isabout twenty minutes from the catacombs and it takes a little over an hour to get back to NAS 1 and NAS 2.

FAST AND FREE ENERGY TIPS The average home spends about $1,900 a year on energy costs. But you can lower your energy bills and help save the environment at the same time! * Be a speedy chef - Nothing is more energy efficient for cooking than your microwave. It uses two-thirds less energy than your stove. *Push a button to wash your dishes Surprise! Your dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand. Then let dishes air-dry to save even more! *Fill up the fridge - Having lots of food in your fridge keeps it from warming up too fast when the door is open. So your fridge doesn't have to work as hard to stay cool.
Cutting back unnecessary energy use is an easy way to reduce energy consumption while saving money. Here are some additional suggestions you can do at home, at absolutely no cost to you. Turn up your thermostat Set your thermostat to 78 degrees when you are home and 85 degrees or off when you are away. Using ceiling or room fans allows you to set the thermostat higher because the air movement will cool the room. Always take into account health considerations and be sure to drink plenty of fluids in warm weather. (Save: 1 - 3 percent per degree, for each degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees)

Work from home as a CDH
Becoming a Child Development Home (CDH) is a great opportunity for anyone who loves working with children or has ever wanted to start their own business. The CDH program provides a warm family setting while letting children participate in developmentally appropriate learning activities as well as home-life experience. Children are able to build a trusting relationship with a provider who will foster their curiosity and creativity, provide guidance and give them the hugs they need. CDH providers are given extensive training prior to starting including CPR, First Aid, Fire Safety, Creative Curriculum and much more. Additionally, providers attend monthly train-
ings and complete learning modules worth college credit. “The learning modules can be put towards a CDA credential or college degree in child development and as long as you are a CDH provider, the Navy will cover the cost,” said Lisa Gasporra, CDH coordinator. “This is a great first step toward a career in the teaching field, and gives much the opportunity for employment at their next duty station.” Being a CDH provider is perfect for anyone with small children of their own; providers not only run their own business but save the cost of their own child care. CDH providers can set their own hours or coordinate with parents who do shift work or need night care. A provider selects the age group that fits them best; there can be up to six children in a CDH or up to three infants in an infant-only home. The Child Development Center provides the toys and equipment as well as on-site assistance and advice. For more information on becoming a CDH call Lisa Gasporra at 624-4005.

Sailors Who Complete Motorcycle Safety Course To Get Discount at The NEX Kristine M. Sturkie Public Affairs Specialist The NEX, in partnership with the Naval Safety Center and Commander, Navy Installations Command, is offering a discount coupon on motorcycle protective gear for all Sailors who complete the Motorcycle Safety Course at their base. The coupon entitles the Sailor to receive 25 percent off their entire purchase of motorcycle protective equipment sold at select NEXs as well as online at www.myNavyExchange.com. “We are happy to partner with the Naval Safety Center to bring this discount coupon to Sailors who have completed their required motorcycle training,” said Rear Adm. Steven J. Romano, Commander, Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM). “The NEX does all it can to help promote motorcycle safety including selling protective equipment, promoting safety messages and partnering with the Naval Safety Center. We will do all we can to ensure the safety of our Sailors and their families.” Things, continued from page 2 phy that says, ‘My job is not to get ulcers: my job is to give them.’” Now I’m sure the image is clear. The very essence of an interpersonal relationship is clear communication rooted in trust. Collins goes onto say,” When communication is insufficient or in danger of breaking down, interpersonal tensions often follow.” This is a relevant topic for us all. I’d like to offer some concrete ways to help bring more light and less heat into your interpersonal relationships. Firstly, focus on the things that can be changed. Too much time is wasted on musing over things we cannot change, this is time Music continued from page 6 Branduardi can be considered as a “progressive artist” due to his great love for folk and classical music, which have always been essential sources of inspiration to him. During his long career he has always been very consistent in his style, and never compromised in order to gain commercial success. His eponymous first album, released in 1974, is one of the most appealing for his fans; but the great success came with "Alla fiera dell'est" (Highdown Fair), recorded for Polydor in 1976. Both the single and the LP were top hits in Italy, and also made the artist very famous in other European countries such as Germany and France, where most of his albums have been issued, often in different versions than the originals, and Branduardi has constantly toured. Combining traditional folk tunes (often from northern Europe) with classical music, Branduardi, a trained violinist, has created a distinctive style that is still very popular nowadays. Over the years he has worked with many other Italian artists, and his collaboration with Banco del Mutuo Soccorso is noteworthy for his fans. Branduardi played violin on "Come in un'ultima cena", and translated the lyrics for the English-language version of that album, "As in a last supper." As reported by Scaruffi.com, PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI Dads continued from page 6 then, paternity leave had been optional but fewer than 2% of new fathers actually applied. Now uptake is 22%. Ms Mosca explains: “This means that having to stay at home can teach people that looking after children is good. It can break a
“In fiscal year 2009, motorcycle fatalities were down 61 percent in the Navy” said Rear Adm. Arthur Johnson, Commander, Naval Safety Center. “However, we still have more work to do. At least 3,500 Sailors haven’t completed their required motorcycle training. We have to close this gap as well. If you know a rider who hasn’t been to training, get involved! If you need your three-year refresher course, take responsibility and get to a class! The American people are counting on you to manage risks and ride smart.” Sailors who complete the Navy Motorcycle Rider Training class will receive a coupon from their course instructor. The coupon will have the Sailor's name and course completion date. The coupon is non-transferrable and is good for 90 days. The 25 percent discount does not apply to any other merchandise in the transaction or to general purpose footwear, outerwear or electronics. The coupon may not be combined with any other offers, coupons or discounts. For those Sailors making their
motorcycle protective equipment on the NEX online store, www.myNavyExchange.com, the process is slightly different. Since the online store cannot accept coupons, customers will need to bring their receipt, found inside the shipping box, along with their 25 percent coupon to any NEX customer service counter. The NEX will issue a discount to the Sailor’s credit card for 25 percent off the merchandise cost of the entire purchase of motorcycle protective equipment. The coupon is not good on online purchases of motorcycle protective equipment from www.myNavyExchange.com made prior to the date of issuance of the coupon. The coupon is not good on purchases from the All-Services Exchange Catalog or Exchange Online Mall. To sign up for motorcycle training, go to www.navymotorcyclerider.com. Remember, customers receive a five cent credit toward their purchase for each eco-friendly reusable bag used to bag their purchase.
well wasted. Instead concentrate on areas you can change. Secondly, try to always keep the conflict from escalating (more light, less heat). This takes self-control, intentionality and forethought. Respond thoughtfully to the conflict. This will usually keep it from escalating; however, you can only control your response. Thirdly, focus on the issues at hand, not the other person’s opinions. People have opinions. Opinions are deeply personal in nature. Thus, the focus shouldn’t be on a person’s opinion, per se. Stay focused on the issues and try to reach a mutually satisfactory solution. Typically, this leads to mutual trust and open communication. Fourthly, recognize that a disagree-
ment can be a meaningful form of communication; totally avoid fruitless and destructive arguments. State the facts work toward solutions. Fifthly, make every effort to clearly communicate specifics, avoid generalities. Sixthly, work toward mutual trust. The trust factor is incredibly important. This might also be the most difficult. However, the goal is to build a mutual trust, by the way! These are genuine life lessons. Let these lessons help you develop your interpersonal skills. I pray that these ideas will help you improve all of your relationships. My next article will concentrate on coping with anger. Until next time, take care Sigonella.
aka PFM was the leading band of the Italian progressive-rock school in the 1970s. A quintet centered on multi-instrumentalist Mauro Pagani, they resembled Yes and King Crimson, but added a softer melodic quality to the clichés of that genre. Storia di un Minuto (Numero Uno, 1972) and Per Un Amico (1972) were song-oriented collections, later summarized on Photos Of Ghosts (Manticore, 1973). They perfected a fluid style of arrangement that neutralized the timbres of guitar, synthesizer, violin and flute. PFM tried in vain to keep their style current on L'Isola di Niente (1974) and Chocolate Kings (Asylum, 1975), but it was rapidly becoming outdated. They basically converted to jazz-rock with Jet Lag (1977). As reported by “All Music Guide” the MODENA CITY RAMBLERS were formed in 1991, a casual musical group that came together to entertain friends and family playing Irish folk music. Meeting up to jam more and more often, the Ramblers began to write their own tunes, inspired by popular Celtic-influenced bands like the Pogues and the Waterboys. Two years after their formation, the band recorded their first demo tape called Combat Folk. Featuring their punk/Irish folk songs and Italian resistance ballads, the demo sold more than 3000 copies, earning the Ramblers grassroots recognition all over Italy. Picked up by the independent label Helter Skelter, the band's debut
album, Riportando Tutto a Casa was released in 1994. Eventually distributed by Mercury, the disc went on to sell an impressive 185,000 copies. In the years that followed, Modena City Ramblers earned a reputation as a powerful live act, performing throughout Europe in collaboration with artists such as the Chieftains and Italian rock vocalist Bob Geldof. Their sophomore effort, La Grande Famiglia, experienced similar success to its predecessor, followed by Terra e Libertà which ushered in an era of international attention during which the Ramblers performed in nations such as Bolivia, Spain, Cuba and more. Known for their progressive politics, the band aligned itself with musicians of similar values such as Manu Chao, performing at festivals like the Independent Days Festival in Bologna and the Awesome Africa Festival in South Africa. Their 2002 production Radio Rebelde garnered them invitations to perform in locations near and far, including Algeria, the Czech Republic, Amsterdam and Mexico. The band's 2004 album Viva la Vida! Viva la Muerte! (a quote from Zapatista leaders) found its way to Italian Top Ten charts, and opened doors for a 120 city tour. The Modena City Ramblers have become a staple of both the Italian rock scene and the leftist musical circuit alike. taboo and start a revolution”. A revolution that could involve Italy where, until it becomes compulsory, optional paternity leave is taken up by fewer than 4% of new fathers. Being with your children, to learn how to like being with them, becomes a duty. It has to be said that some companies, among them Intesa San Paolo and Nestlé, have
already opted for this approach but would all businesses agree to the extra cost? Ms Saltarini points out: “Four days per worker, with the birth rate at 1.24%, add up to not very much at all. We want to help families to have children and women to stay in the world of work. It’s one form of development”
