NAS Sigonella welcomes newest U.S. citizens during ceremony Article and photo by MC1 Erica Gardner The Signature Staff Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella hosted a naturalization ceremony on July 20. During the ceremony, four Sailors and seven spouses from eight countries became citizens of the United States. Scott Butler, NAS Sigonella base commander was the guest of honor. Also attending the ceremony were more than 50 friends, family and coworkers who gave a standing ovation to the new U.S. citizens. During his remarks, Butler congratulated the new citizens. "This has not been easy; but with a lot of commitment and the support of your family and friends, you have accomplished this achievement.” "The Oath of Allegiance asks you to 'bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law,'" said Sarfarglia. "These words hold special significance because you already have met those requirements even before you became U.S. citizens." Ramage Sailors bring Christmas in July to Niscemi, Sicily Article and photo by MC1 Erica Gardner The Signature Staff On July 20, 11 Sailors from USS Ramage (DDG – 61) passed out toys and school supplies to underprivileged children at Niscemi, Sicily during a community relations event jointly coordinated by NAS Sigonella Public Affairs, Religious Ministries Department, and Lt. Lesa Welliver, Chaplain of Ramage. The Niscemi Social Services for Underprivileged Children made it possible for the Sailors to meet the children, providing an opportunity for them to interact with Americans. Di Martino told the children, “I want you to welcome our friends who have come from miles around.” The Sailors were welcomed with a traditional Sicilian dance and folk song, native to the area of Niscemi. The dancers and singers were dressed in vibrant red skirts with white peasant blouses and black vests. “This is really nice,” said Welliver. “I was not expecting a welcome like this.” The children were led to an upstairs room where they sat on the floor, wondering what was inside the boxes being carried by their new COMREL, continued on page 12

Direct Line We’re over half way through the “Critical Days of Summer” -- the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day and the time of year when the armed forces typically experience the most off-duty accidents and fatalities. Due to the high risk to all of us, it’s a good time to remind everyone to focus on reducing risks. In looking through the traffic statistics, it is readily apparent to me that something has changed over the past year, and not for the better. As of last week, our accident rate is up 29% over last year’s and our accidents with injuries are up 75%. I’m sure that part of this is the increase in the number of Americans living off base and driving further distances each day; however, no matter how far your daily commute is, you really have to stay vigilant and drive defensively. I’ve only been driving in Sicily for a little more than a month, and I can attest to the fact that

NASSIG Commanding Officer Capt. Scott Butler

driving in Sicily requires an extra measure of concentration than anywhere else I’ve been: the roads are narrow; the road quality can often be questionable; and the drivers seem more aggressive and unpredictable. This combination of factors really puts the responsibility of staying aware and driving safely on our shoulders. We need to be aware of other vehicles, slow down, drive defensively, and resist the urge to “go native” and drive like the Sicilians. Taking these tips to heart should put us back on the right path and lower our accident rates. A statistic that concerns me even more than the accident rates is the number of drinking and driving incidents -they seem to have taken off like a wild fire this year. I’m told that last year at this time we had seven DWIs, or “near misses,” where the driver was under .1 but over .05 BAC, and one DUI, where the driver was over .1 BAC. This year

Eating at special occasions Article by: NAS Sigonella Health Promotion, with information from NMCPHC The summer is here and so are the BBQs and picnics. But people watching their weight have love/hate relationship with invitations to parties, weddings, picnics, or other occasions. On one hand they love the excitement of the party atmosphere, but on the other hand, they fear the possibility of eating too much. The following tips will help you enjoy yourself while you lose weight. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your BBQ’s while still enjoying the food and not worrying about the pounds: 1. Don’t tempt yourself by hanging around the food table. Seek out friends and conversation on the far side of the room. Whatever you do – don’t get caught next to food with a boring conversationalist! 2. If you are logging your daily food intake, keep to your basic technique of recording your intake, and BE HONEST. 3. Try not to talk about watching your calories. Some people may find it challenging to tempt you with high calorie foods. 4. Eat only the foods you like best at the party. If your hostess can’t resist adding something to your plate against your protest, push it around for a while, but don’t eat! Say everything was delicious but you are full. 7. Fill your dinner plate with vegetables, salad or soup as an appetizer. Remember that prefilling your stomach helps to reduce your total food intake for the meal. 8. Keep your hands occupied. Hold your purse, drink a glass of water or talk using your hands. Keeping your hands occupied makes it more difficult to eat. 9. Alternate low calorie drinks with alcoholic beverages. 10. Add club soda to wine with a twist of lime or use low calorie mixers to reduce calories from drinks. Skip the after dinner liqueurs. 11. Do not be the first person to arrive. It’s less fattening. 12. we have already had nine DWIs and five DUIs. Even worse, is that three of the DUI’s and four of the DWIs were out in town with local authorities. This is bad news for several reasons as the Italians are even more strict than the UCMJ regarding drinking and driving. They are actively looking for drunk drivers. They can -- and will -impound your vehicle and you may never get it back. They can -- and will -- put you in their jails and it is only as a courtesy that they release you back to NASSIG Security: they don’t have to, and may not depending on the charges. If they don’t release you, it is your family and your command’s responsibility to feed you while you are in jail. Imagine the burden that you’d place on your family if you were to be in an Italian jail for an extended visit. – no free rides there. The bottom line is that there is no such thing as accidentally drinking and driving and wherever the

DUIs or DWIs are taking place, they need to stop. It is a conscious action where you drink then drive. Please make the right choice and find an alternative. Find a hotel within walking distance to where you are going out, get a designated driver, call a cab, use the MWR “createa-trip” program to have a paid ride for you and your friends, or just don’t drink. All of these will save your career and possibly your life or someone else’s. Enjoy the rest of the summer, but remember to drive defensively, slow down, and NEVER make the choice to drink and drive. Sicily is a wonderful place to explore and enjoy, but we must

do it responsibly.

Love

Note: This is Chaplain Wilson’s last article for The Signature. We wish him fair winds and following seas as he moves on to the 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, CA. - The Signature Staff When I first arrived to NAS Sigonella, my adjustment was not that easy. I was here a month prior to my wife arriving, and that alone was difficult. I could not move into housing, I was not able to get my HHGs, etc . . . But, when she finally did arrive, it got worse. I picked her up in our car and drove out into the island to stay at a friend’s house who loaned us the place for the night. The next morning, the car would not start. I was in the middle of nowhere with no way of getting help. I knew very few people and had even fewer resources at my disposal. I felt helpless and hopeless. My wife was discouraged. So, I reached out to the one person I knew and whose number I had in my phone. The response was overwhelming. Although I was miles away, someone who did not know me, came out and picked us up, and someone else called the tow truck to come and get the car. In the meantime, our

HHGs were being delivered and we were not there to meet them. Someone else jumped in and took care of that as we were on the side of the road. At that point I knew I was somewhere special. The people who helped me had one motivator . . . Love. They did not know me or my wife; I had not yet built a relationship with them. All they knew is that I needed help. They gained nothing from helping me; I had nothing to give. These people demonstrated love to me and my wife, through various simple, and some difficult, acts. In my faith traditional love is: patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Cor. 13:4-7). This is love. Many of us know it, but we lack the desire to show it. Some of us have no idea what love is. My encouragement to you is this; love one another. Start showing others the love defined above. So many things can be cured with a simple act of love toward our fellow neighbor. Someone feeling alone will no longer feel alone. Someone who is hurt may be healed. Someone who has lost trust in the world may gain some of it back. By loving others you can begin to make a difference in the world. As I leave NAS Sigonella I pray that I have shown you the love you deserve. I also pray that the community of Sigonella will keep up the great acts of love you do show. And I pray that you will show more and more love so that it impacts the rest of the world. There is enough hate in the world. I dare you to try something different . . . love one another.

Tips on helping your child stay safe when using internet Article courtesy Military OneSource One of the challenges of using the Internet is that cyberspace is always changing. Guidelines that work today may not work tomorrow, either because your child has become more mature or because online technology has changed. Here are some extra steps you can take to keep your safety measures up to date. -Use the Internet with your child. Exploring the Internet together will give you a better sense of any new risks that may be involved and how your child can avoid them. If you aren't good with computers, ask your child to show you some of his favorite Web sites or consider taking one of the free courses in understanding the Internet that are offered by many public libraries. -Draw up an online safety contract. Your child may find it much easier to remember your safety guidelines if you write them down on paper or in an electronic file. Ask her to tell you what she

thinks the most important rules are, and then talk about any others that you think are necessary. Review your safety contract periodically to make sure that it keeps up with the changing technology. You can find a sample document called "Staying Safe Online: A Young Person's Contract," on the Web site for the Children's Partnership (www.childrenspartnership.org). -Require your child to comply with all age restrictions on social networking sites. Most social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook have minimum age requirements (users have to be 13 years old to use Facebook and 14 for MySpace). Don't allow your child to have an account on one of these sites until he's old enough. -Require that your child allow you to see any personal pages she creates on social networking sites. Visit the page regularly to make sure that there is no inappropriate material. Make sure that your child uses the privacy setting options that keep strangers from viewing her page. -Keep your computer or

Internet access in a public room. Your child or teenager may be less likely to visit unsafe or inappropriate sites if other family members are watching, and you may be more likely to be immediately available to talk about it in case he does. -Install filtering software. There are many software programs that let you block access to objectionable Web sites or take other steps to keep your child safe. For example, some programs allow you to prevent your child from giving out personal information, such as your last name or address, by blocking specific words or numbers in outgoing email. Some Internet Service Providers allow you to download these programs for free. If yours doesn't, you can buy programs at many computer stores. The features on these programs change with each new version, so it's a good idea to compare several of

SIGNING, continued from page 1 development. Baby signs give a child a developmentally appropriate way to communicate before they can speak. Think about when a child learns to walk after crawling for some period of time. Communication is the same way. Baby signs are useful before a

child has words, and speech allows them the ability to communicate more quickly and more effectively. Baby signs speed up the process of learning to talk once words are finally available. “Bathe” your child in words, and the more words they hear, the faster they will learn to talk. Every time a baby/child successfully uses a

baby sign, a change occurs in their brain, bringing the child closer to mastering their language. The “circuitry in the brain” (upon which talking depends) develops along with a child’s experience with language. Using baby signs enables a child to “jump start” this process, which will continue to pay off down the line. This is a course for parents only. All parents are welcome to participate, however; baby signs are geared more towards babies six months of age and babies that have not started speaking yet. If you are interested in learning how to sign, please contact Speech and Language Pathologist, Pam Cooper, at EDIS- 624-4536 to register. Space is limited.

Vatican 'to crack down on women priests' : Ordination of women will join three top 'crimes' - sources

(ANSA) - Vatican - The Vatican is set to crack down harder on the ordination of women priests, making it one of the most serious crimes under its canon law, unofficial Catholic sources said Thursday. According to the sources, a new version of the 2001 document Delicta Graviora ("major crimes") will add the ordination of women to the three gravest offences punishable by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, heir to the Inquisition. Those three are "attacks against the Eucharist", "attacks against the sanctity of Confession" and sexual abuse of minors. Ordaining women has been punishable by automatic excommunication since 2008 but inclusion among the Delicta Graviora would be seen as an extra deterrent, religious experts said. The updated list is due for publication next week and will also include heresy and apostasy as formal crimes for the first time, the sources said. "More restrictive procedures" on pedophilia will also feature in the update, they said. The Vatican has staunchly opposed women priests under the late pope John Paul II and the current pontiff, Benedict XVI, while many Anglicans have 'returned to Rome' after the Anglican Communion OK'd the ordination of women in 2008. Despite the Vatican ban, a number of organizations of Catholic women have named 'women priests' in recent years, with the United States and northern European countries like Germany and Switzerland leading the way. These associations argue that Vatican dogma about Jesus not wanting women to be priests or deacons is wrong. They also say women played a much more prominent role in the early Church than is acknowledged by Rome. This view has been supported by several religious historians, including some Catholic ones.

The sun soaked island of Lipari Article and photos by MC3 Jonathan Idle For The Signature

Lipari is the largest of the seven Aeolian Islands lying off the coast of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Lipari also happens to be the name of the biggest town on the island which also has four smaller villages. The town is mainly geared toward tourists who visit from May to Sept. every year. Many of the local residents, who don't make a living from tourism,

rely on mining and export of pumice and obsidian. The island slopes up into a volcanic cone which dominates the majority of the island. Site: Lipari rates four stars for things to see and do. The reason it only rates four stars is because the mining equipment for pumice stone detracts from the view on certain parts of the island. Upon arriving in the port, the most notable site is a large Norman cathedral sitting above the port.

The cathedral offers great overviews of the entire city and the port. The island is also home to the Aeolian Islands Museum which offers a view into the history of the entire chain and boasts an impressive collection of ceramic masks. There are several options for getting around the island including bus tours and numerous places to rent scooters. The ITT trip to Lipari includes a bus tour around the entire island and plenty of opportunities to take photographs. On a clear day, Sicily and Mt. Etna are both visible as well as the other islands. The town is full of shops with items including local ceramics, jewelry and designer clothing. There are also numerous restaurants along the port which offer fresh seafood and Italian cuisine. Lipari also boasts numerous beaches around the perimeter of the island. For the most part, the beaches consist of small pebbles and pumice rock. The water is relatively warm and makes for enjoyable swimming. Due to the amount of beaches on the island, they are

boshi

not very crowded which allows for some more privacy and space than more well-known beaches in Sicily. Family Friendly: Lipari only rates three stars in this category. The island has a lot of slopping streets which make getting around with strollers, wheelchairs or small children difficult. There are not many things for children to do on the island outside of the beaches and tours. Families with very small children may find it difficult to keep them entertained with the historical locations, but the beaches offer plenty of room and safe swimming conditions. Accessibility: As an ITT trip this rates five stars for accessibility. The bus heads from the base early in the morning and drives up to Milazzo. From Milazzo, the ferry goes on to Lipari. The ferry stops in Vulcano before it gets to Lipari so beware of the loud speaker announcing which port it is pulling into. Hydrofoils are available to and from the islands if you are not going on an ITT trip. The ITT does include a hydrofoil ride on the return trip to Milazzo. For those who wish to drive, take A18 toward Catania to A19 then continue on Messina/Palermo. Take the first Milazzo exit to the harbor. Travel Time: The trip only rates one star for travel time. It takes between two to three hours to reach Milazzo by bus, and slightly more than an hour on the ferry to the island. The hydrofoil cuts the return time slightly, but the trip will still take three plus hours each way.

CITIZEN, continued from page 1 Sarfarglia shared the responsibility of being an American with the candidates. “I am stoked,” said Gahndi. “I did not think this day would come.” As the friends, family and coworkers gathered around the new American citizens, the smiles and sighs of relief from the previous candidates were warranted by a message Butler gave earlier in the ceremony, praising them for the dedication to the accomplishment. “You serve the military just like your spouses,” said Butler. “You are now part of the fabric of America and we welcome you with open arms.” COMREL, continued from page 1 friends. Mothers and grandmothers put out homemade cakes and cookies and drinks for the children, but mainly for the new American friends. “I had American friends when I lived in Germany for 35 years,” said Emanuela Leonardi. “I am happy to meet new friends.” Leonardi is the grandmother of a 16 year old that attends the center. She and her daughter, Enza worked with the other mothers and grandmothers to make this day special for the children and the Sailors. While the Sailors were busy removing Disney Princess Barbie dolls, toy cars, watches, pens and paper from the boxes they brought with them, the children’s eyes began to twinkle and grow larger as they saw the gifts line the tables in front of them. “We want to thank you for allowing us to visit your center,” said Welliver. “We hope you like the gifts we bring to you here today.” Before the children were able to dive into the goodies, Di Martino

spoke about the significance of the center and why it is important for the children to have it. “The center has been open since 2002 and currently has 84 children attending the summer program,” he said. Di Martino went on to discuss the challenges of children in the area being tempted by outside influences that are not always in their best interest. Having this facility provides the children with positive influences and options to remain safe and still respect the rules of society. The youth center provided Welliver and the Sailors with sashes, naming them perfect citizens of Niscemi for their desire to help the children live positive lives, as well as with books about their town. Welliver brought a ship ball cap and coin as a token of appreciation for Di Martino and the town of Niscemi. By building on the unique relationship between Sailors and the local children, this organization helps families and communities by encouraging goals and appreciation for each other and not just material possessions. “We have traveled all over the world,” said Welliver. “We have not seen such beautiful faces and wonderful laughter like we have here.” The children lined up at the table full of surprises, interacting with the Sailors and smiling as they received their gift. “I had a blast”, said Francesco Veca, age 9. “I enjoyed this and meeting the Americans.” Veca went on to rave about the gifts from the Americans and the watch he received, while smiling in the direction of the Sailors. After eating cake and cookies, the town gave the Sailors a tour, showing them the Cathedrals, old town farmer museum and treating them to an authentic Sicilian dinner. “This is the best COMREL I have ever participated in,” said Lt. j.g. Caroline Lynch of the USS Ramage. USS Ramage is a guided missile destroyer home ported in Norfolk, Virginia and currently operating in the SIXTH Fleet Area of Responsibility. The ship is designed for combat operations against surface, air and sub-surface threats. She is home to 300 of the Nation’s finest Sailors. be in danger It's important to take action immediately if you suspect that your child may be at risk. "Luring" -- any action by an adult that entices a child to meet face-to-face -- is illegal. If your child has experienced luring or if she is getting threatening calls or email messages, call 911 or the police. Law enforcement officials can tell you what to do next and put you in touch with child-protection agencies in your community. If you believe that your child or teenager may be in danger, most experts believe that you should also insist on knowing your child's password and monitoring her e-mail and other online communications. You may also want to consider these steps: -Talk calmly to your child or teenager about what you've noticed. Keep in mind that your child or teenager may already feel afraid or confused. If you become angry or upset, he may withdraw and refuse to tell you more. You might begin by saying, "I noticed that yesterday you closed out of your Internet browser immediately when I walked into the room, and there was sexual material on the screen. I'd like to know more about this." -Review your online safety procedures with your child. Remind her to never give out personal information such as her last name, address, phone number, password, or which school she attends. Make sure she understands the dangers of giving out this information or sending photos over the Internet. -Keep track of telephone calls. Take advantage of telephone features that allow you to monitor calls in your home or on cell phones. Use Caller ID or last-number redial features to find out if your child is making calls to (or receiving calls from) people who could be dangerous. Remember that just as you can set your computer to block e-mail from certain users, you can make arrangements with telephone companies to block calls from specific numbers. -Check the browser history on your computer frequently to see

which sites your child has visited. You can check the browser history by clicking on the pull-down arrow to the right of the Web address in the address bar, or clicking on "History"

Finally, remember that most children and teenagers get many benefits from the Internet and never face a serious threat to their physical safety online. In that sense, talking about
