Sigonella Sailors were invited to participate in the Catholic Mass before participating in a parade and feast that followed.
Sigonella Sailors were the featured guests of honor as they were paraded through the streets of Cesaro.
Story By MCSA Bramham Signature Staff Sicilians and NAS Sigonella Sailors gathered Thursday, August 19, 2010 in Cesaro, Sicily to recognize and honor the past efforts of Sailors who helped the small town with a giant task in 1996. Fifteen years ago, an MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter, from HC-4, helped move a 21-foot, 7,000 pound statue of Jesus Christ to the top of a mountain overlooking the small town. The
name of the statue is “Christo Signore Della Montagna,” which translates to Christ the Lord of the Mountain. After the statue was in-place, the local Sicilians threw a huge celebration in honor of the Sailors respecting and helping them with their traditions. This time was no different. The Sicilians gathered again and welcomed the NAS Sigonela Sailors back to their small town to celebrate the Sailors who had helped them in the past. The evening started
Catholic Mass at a local church in the middle of Cesaro. After the ceremony concluded the guests proceeded outside where a local marching band along with a group of Sicilians led them for a walk through the tiny town. After walking about a mile to the base of the mountain where the statue sits, the townspeople gathered around a stage set-up for a special ceremony to honor the guests from NAS, Sigonella. There, Mayor Antonio Caputo gave a long
speech on the history of the statue and the friendship between Cesaro and NAS Sigonella. Among the guests honored by the town were Naval Computer and Telecommunication Station (NCTS) Commanding Officer Bruce Black who gave a speech at the ceremony after Mayor Caputo thanking the town for the support. Cmdr. Alfonso Concha, NAS Sigonella Chaplian, was also an honored special guest and helped conduct Catholic
Mass at the church. Concha said it was great to see the entire community come out and show support for the Navy and all the Sailors at NAS Sigonella. “They are very honored to have all the Americans in their town for the celebration,” said Concha. The evening ended with a firework display, a walk up to see the statue, and finally dinner with Mayor Caputo and other prominent members of Cesaro.

On Wednesday, August 25th the Sigonella Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (SES PTO) held their annual teacher welcome back breakfast along with the Sigonella High School Parent Teacher Student Organization. Kristin Bertnik, the PTO Hospitality Chairperson, worked alongside Jennifer Bay, the PTSO President, to coordinate this event. Teachers started their first day back on the job by enjoying a hearty breakfast that included items such as pastries, breads, bacon, and egg casseroles. The PTO received many food donations from parents throughout the community which aided in the success of the breakfast! SES PTO would like to thank all of their parent volunteers for their support and for starting the year with such enthusiasm! The PTO is always looking for volunteers to help with events. There are so many ways that parents can get involved in the PTO which benefits the school and the children! Parents can do a wide range of volunteering for the PTO from helping with Scholastic book orders, baking items for events, and helping collect box tops. The PTO will send out forms to all parents during the first couple of weeks of school asking for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, simply fill out the form and send it back to your child’s teacher. Membership forms will also be sent out to parents. The cost of membership is $10.00 per person. Membership fees help the PTO host many events throughout the school year. Other news from the SES PTO

Direct Line Summer safety is a topic that cannot be stressed enough. The period between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day is historically the highest risk period of the year resulting in many preventable deaths and injuries. These incidents have historically occurred because of a number of factors unique to the summer season; increased travelling due to PCS's and vacations, increased amount of cookouts and parties which typically include alcohol, and increased levels of outdoor recreation in general. This year as the Critical Days of Summer winds down to its final days we will be observing a 4day liberty, so get out and have

some fun. Just remember to use common sense in everything you do. Grilling is a good way to get the neighbors together. But not using common sense can create a dangerous situation for you or your loved ones: * Place your grill in a wellventilated area and away from the children's play area. * Wear tight fitting clothing. * Loose clothing could easily catch on fire. * Stand upwind from the grill when lighting the fire. * Stay by your grill...don't leave the grill unattended. When traveling this weekend remember that driving safety is a must on these roads:

With the Navy Physical Fitness Assessment around the corner, and an increasing trend for a healthier lifestyle, everyone is on the move! Although the importance of exercise takes our nation by a storm, there is still an overlooked detail: stretching! Many people don’t take the time to warm up before an exercise or stretch afterwards. This may be because they are unaware of how important stretching is. Simply put, stretching improves your flexibility. Flexibility reduces the chance of injury, increases blood and nutrient supply to the muscles and improves muscle balance around a joint. When you exercise, your body goes through many adjustments. For example, your heart rate and breathing increases. Additionally, your muscles begin to demand more oxygen and nutrients. Warming up allows your body to ease into these adjustments. Cooling down after an exercise session allows the body to gradually transition from an exertional state to a resting or near

resting state. It also helps remove wastes such as lactic acid. Stretching should always be light and never forced as that alone can cause more injury than some of the exercises we perform. You should never bounce when stretching either as this can tear muscles or strain them enough that they will tear during the course of training. Stretching should take at least 10 minutes, although it is recommended for 15-20 minutes. Warm up before exercise and cool down afterwards. A Pencil in the Hand of God Too often times, we lose sight of the significance of serving others around us. Mother Teresa once said, “I am a pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.” Mother Teresa lived a life of selfless service. She serves as a remarkable example of selflessness. I’d also like to mention one other great example of selflessness for this article. Have you ever heard of Robert Stephenson Symth Baden-Powell? He certainly is a man with many names. He was a British General who served his country valiantly. He wrote a military text entitled, “Aids to Scouting,” which honed British soldiers’ skills in the field. He was tactically proficient and strategically savvy. The youth in England idolized him for his unwavering courage. I’m quite sure if you have ever been involved with the Scouts his
name is familiar. He could have had the ultimate honor of being a Field Marshal in the British Army; however, he believed that he had a different call in his life. He could have easily focused solely on his own career and needs. What general wouldn’t want the title Field Marshal? In 1910, at the age of fifty-three, he retired from active duty and devoted his attention to the organization he inspired, the Boy Scouts. Through his selfless dedication he changed many lives throughout the world. BadenPowell was truly a pencil in the hand of God. He touched millions of young boys (his sister Agnes started the Girls Guides [Girl Scouts in the U.S.]). General Baden-Powell understood the value of serving others. He dedicated his life to helping others. Hence, Mother Teresa and Robert Stephenson Symth Baden-Powell serve as two excellent examples of serving others. Let’s take some time and reflect how we are doing in the area of serving others. Is there room for improvement? It is easy to focus on our own needs. It is easy to be selfish. Nonetheless, such unchecked selfishness leaves us feeling hollow inside. Whenever we serve others in need—there is a very satisfying sense of meaningfulness added to our lives. I will leave you with this salient quotation from Leo Tolstoy, “The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity.” Let’s make it a point to serve others in our community and around the world.

New Law Extends 75-Day Leave Carry Over From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- A 2008 law that increased annual leave carry over from 60 days to 75 days has been extended to 2013. The 2010 National Defense Authorization Act passed by
Congress and signed by President Barack Obama in October 2009, extended the planned December 2010 expiration of the 75-day leave carry over benefit, until Sept. 30, 2013. Afterward, leave carryover eligibility will be reset to 60 days. "While this extension was effective in October 2009, and policy documents were updated to reflect this
change, it appears that many Sailors had not received this information. The release of NAVADMIN 281/10 ensures maximum distribution to the fleet," said Lt. Brandi McGehee, Navy military pay and compensation policy, assistant pay and allowances officer. Special Leave Accrual (SLA) retention limits for SLA earned between
Oct. 1, 2008, to Sept. 30, 2013, for service members assigned to hostile fire or imminent danger areas, certain deployable ships, mobile units, or other duty, were also extended to four fiscal years from the previous three-fiscal-year limit. These leave carryover changes are now reflected in the MILPERSMAN articles that apply (1050-010, 1050-
060 and 1050-070). For more information, visit the Navy Personnel Command website at www.npc.navy.mil and read the message or contact your servicing Personnel Support Detachment. For more news from Navy Personnel Command, visit www.navy.mil/local/npc/.

Adapted from U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission – www.cpsc.gov To reduce the risk of SIDS and suffocation, place baby to sleep on his or her back in a crib that meets current safety standards. To prevent suffocation, never use a pillow as a mattress for baby to sleep on or to prop baby’s head or neck. Infants can strangle to death if their bodies pass through gaps between loose components, broken slats and other parts of the crib, and their head and neck become entrapped in the space. Do not use old, broken or modified cribs. Regularly tighten hardware to keep sides firm. Infants can suffocate in spaces between the sides of the crib and an ill-fitting mattress;
choking. Magnets – For children younger than age eight, avoid building sets with small magnets. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries and/or death can occur. Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills and interest level of the intended child. Look for sturdy construction, such as tightly-secured eyes, noses and other potential small parts. For all children younger than age eight, avoid toys that have sharp edges and points. Verify that furniture is stable on its own. For added security, anchor it to the floor or attach it to a wall. Use outlet covers and outlet plates to help prevent electrocution.

never allow a gap larger than two finger widths at any point between the sides of the crib and the mattress. Never place a crib near a window with blind or curtain cords; infants can strangle on the cords. Safety Around the House Properly set up play yards according to manufacturers’ directions. Only use the mattress provided with the play yard. Do not add extra mattresses, pillows or cushions to the play yard, which can cause a suffocation hazard for infants. Look for a toy chest that has a support that will hold the hinged lid open in any position in which it is placed, or buy one with a detached lid or doors. (Guardian.co.uk) Visitors to the beach at Forte dei Marmi in Tuscany are looking for peace and quiet, the town's mayor says. The mayors of some of Italy's most elegant resorts have expressed outrage at a new regulation introduced by Silvio Berlusconi's government that allows beachfront premises to stage drink-and-dance parties seven days a week. Bizarrely, the measure was introduced as part of a revision of the traffic laws whose main purpose was to cut down on drunk-driving. The vast majority of Italians get to the seaside by car, scooter or motorbike. Once at the beach, they will now have access to as much drink as they want from 5pm to 8pm before setting off for home or a night out. "It's unbelievable," said Domenico Lombardi, the mayor of Pietrasanta in Tuscany. "It's like saying to a youngster, 'Before you drive to the discotheque, do a bit more boozing. [Drink] twice as much!'" Lombardi and other officials on one of Europe's most exclusive stretches of coastline are also worried about the effect the new law could have on tourists who pay handsomely for peace and quiet. At Forte dei
Marmi, a favourite with wealthy Russians, the asking price last week for a small two-bedroom flat, 100 yards from the sea, was €1.2m (£1m). The town's mayor, Umberto Buratti, told the Observer: "Ours is high-quality tourism. Here we have exactly 100 beach concessions. If they are all allowed to open every evening, we will have 100 beach barrestaurants and the character of the beach will be changed out of all recognition. People come here looking for peace and quiet." However, the president of the Automobile Club of Italy (ACI), Enrico Gelpi, echoed a widespread perception when he said the new act, which came into force at the end of last month, would "promote more attentive and responsible behavior on the part of young people, who are particularly exposed to risk on the roads". Among other things, the legislation requires learner drivers to take a narcotics test as a condition of being issued with a license. It sets the permitted blood alcohol level for drivers under the age of 21 at virtually nil. But tucked away in article 54, clause 2, is a sentence which says that beach concessions can put on dance parties "together with the supply of alcoholic beverages every day of the week". Giordano Biserni, the president of Asaps, a national road safety organization, said: "This is a measure
that has nothing to do with road safety. On the contrary, it puts it at risk." Some councils said they thought they could mitigate the effects of the new legislation with existing municipal bylaws. But one of the sponsors of the amendment that inserted the controversial clause, a Northern League deputy, Gianluca Pini, whose constituency includes the low-cost holiday resorts around Rimini on the Adriatic coast, said: "They can put a limit on the volume of the music. But they cannot restrict the parties to [for example] only two days [a week]." Italy has one of Europe's worst road safety records. In 2008, the last year for which comparative figures were available, there were 4,731 deaths on the roads out of a population of 58 million people, according to Tispol, the European Traffic Police Network. In the same year in the UK, which has a population of 61 million, there were 2,538 fatalities. The ACI's figures indicate that 30% of the accidents in Italy involve drivers who have held a license for less than three years. Seaside areas, packed with discos, have some of the most dangerous roads, particularly at weekends. Last weekend, police on the coast near Rome organized spot checks of 180 drivers, and 25 were found to have been driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Survive Hot Summer Day on the Porch with Pair of Granitas (Story by Wolfgang Puck Columbiatribune.com) - Many years ago, I was vacationing in Rome in the middle of summer. It was an unusually hot day as I strolled with an Italian friend of mine, and nothing seemed to cool us down. Then we saw a sign in the window of small trattoria: granita di caffe. We immediately entered and each of us ordered one, finally cooling off as we enjoyed spoonful after spoonful of sweet, icy crystals flavored with strong espresso coffee. We left and started strolling again, until I saw a sign for lemon granita. Of course, I had to have one. Gradually, we tasted our way through the city, staying cool with scoops of orange, strawberry, melon — so many refreshing flavors. I never felt the heat again that day. Ever since, I’ve loved granitas. I love the word, too: It just sounds so refreshing and fun. In fact, I called the restaurant I had in Malibu for
many years Granita. It seemed to me the perfect name for a relaxed place near the beach to enjoy a delicious meal. One of my favorite things about making granitas is how easy they are. Bring up a frozen dessert you make at home, and most cooks instantly get stressed by the thought of having to haul out or buy an ice cream machine or, worse, cranking one of those old-fashioned models that call for a mess of ice and rock salt to freeze the mixture. But granitas are as easy as can be. You make your sweetened liquid flavored with fruit, coffee, chocolate, or other flavorful ingredients, and just pour the mixture into a large, shallow pan and pop it in the freezer. Then, you set a timer to remind you to take it out occasionally when it’s still partially frozen so you can scrape up the ice crystals with the tines of a fork until you have the granular, almost fluffy consistency
of a perfect granita. You might have noticed I mentioned other flavorful ingredients for granitas. I’ve had delicious granitas flavored with mint, ginger and cinnamon. I’ve enjoyed savory-sweet granitas made with the juice of sunripened summer tomatoes. One of my favorites was served to me by my friend Corrado Assenza at his restaurant, Caffe Sicilia, in the Sicilian town of Noto. He makes a renowned gelato from fresh almond “milk,” and I’m happy to offer my own version of the delicious recipe here. Along with it, I’m also including another recipe for a granita made with fresh orange juice. The flavors of almond and orange go beautifully together. Although you can certainly make each one on its own, as I learned years ago on a hot summer day in Rome, one granita is never enough.

Navy family participates in Motta Medieval Festival Sigonella Hospital HM1 Joel Myers, his wife Lily and his children Orion and Aries took part in the traditional August celebrations commemorating the medieval past of Motta Sant’Anastasia by wearing medieval costumes. Medieval clothing is indeed among the highlights of this annual festival. Those elaborate handmade costumes are made by skilled Motta craftsmen and women, a community effort which makes this festival a unique event. “It was a great way for our American friends to honor our medieval time and mingle with our people,” a Motta Town official said. Since the Meyers arrived in Sicily 3 years ago, Motta has been indeed like home away from home
for them. “The residents have not just welcomed us into their community, but they have embraced us. We have experienced much more than we ever thought imaginable: from parents helping my children become acquainted and integrated in the Scuola Materna and Primaria, to my friend, Tiziana's Carnivale luncheon, and even a late morning horseback riding lesson at a friend's local farm, I say time and again, 'quando si trova il paradiso, non si parte!' Motta has been a little slice of Heaven. After watching the jousting, the drummers, the flag throwers and the trumpeters perform, we knew we had to be a part of it,” Lily Myers said.

Mobster Undone by Love of Mamma's Cooking (ANSA) - Naples - A suspected member of the Neapolitan mafia, the Camorra, has been recently arrested by Italian police after being unable to resist his mother's culinary delights. Rosario Scognamillo, a 39year-old suspected of being a high-
ranking member of the Grimaldi Camorra clan, was captured by agents last week while having lunch at his mother's home. The man, who is accused of criminal association related to drugs trafficking, had been on the run since
May. He may have thought his return home would not be noticed with many Italians relaxing on their summer holidays at the moment. He told police he hoped that with so many people on holiday his visit would go unnoticed.
Authorities say no cause to make Aeolian Islands off limits (ANSA) - Lipari - Italian authorities last week reassured locals and tourists that the situation on Lipari was under control after a quake hit the Aeolian island. No one was directly hurt by the 4.6 magnitude tremor that struck on Monday although a local hospital said some people went to them after suffering panic attacks and being stung by jellyfish when they rushed into the water to escape falling rocks. ''(The Aeolian islands) absolutely should not be made off limits for tourists,'' Italy's Civil Protection chief Guido Bertolaso told reporters after an inspection. ''On the contrary, these places
will become safer and better monitored. ''Everything is under control. All the investigations and checks on the situation are underway''. The archipelago off northeastern Sicily, which also include Stromboli, Vulcano and Salina, feels the effects of volcanic eruptions and underwater quakes fairly frequently. It was announced last week that a team of experts has been set up to provide a map of the most dangerous parts of the islands, which are popular with tourists, attracting up to 200,000 visitors each year. ''It would be hypocritical to say there are no risks,'' said Bertolaso,
adding that bans on visits to some dangerous areas had not been respected. ''The Aeolian Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage site where there are several volcanoes and a series of natural phenomena that must be monitored. It's necessary for people to know how they should behave in such a beautiful, fragile area''. Bertolaso said he did not expect many more sites to be made off limits after the experts had drawn up the new map of dangerous areas where rocks and boulders could fall on people.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that August 26th of each year is designated as "Women's Equality Day," and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation annually in commemoration of that day in 1920, on which the women of America were first given the right to vote, and that day in 1970, on which a nationwide demonstration for women's rights took place. That was a copy of the original resolution by Congress designating August 26 as Women's Equality Day. This resolution took place in 1970 at the height of the Radical Feminist Movement etching yet another stone in the long and hard fought battle for women’s equal rights. A fight that started in 1837 when a young teacher named Susan B. Anthony asked for equal pay for women teachers. Then accentuated on July 14, 1848 when a call to a woman's rights convention appeared in a Seneca County, New York, newspaper. Thus giving way to the first National Woman's Rights Convention held in Worcester, Massachusetts October, 1850. Which then opened the flood gates to many milestones and achievements within the women’s movement that continue to this day. Today, American women enjoy unprecedented opportunities in business, education, politics, and countless other aspects of our society. Historically, however, women suffered grave inequalities and were denied some of the most fundamental benefits of citizenship. Each year on August 26th, we mark the important anniversary of
the day on which women gained the right to vote. In celebrating Women's Equality Day, we remember the brave and determined individuals who worked to ensure that all women have the opportunity to participate in our democracy. Their dedication to the suffrage movement improved our society, and continues to inspire women today. When the first Women's Rights Convention was convened in Seneca Falls in 1848, women in the United States had limited financial, legal, and political power. In addition to being denied the right to vote, they also could not own property, control their wages, or claim custody of their children. Courageous heroes like Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony refused to accept women's status, and began a determined struggle to gain suffrage for women. Leading active and vocal groups like the National American Woman Suffrage Association and the National Woman's Party, these women risked attack and arrest to organize marches, boycotts, and pickets, while mobilizing an influential lobbying force of millions. Finally, on August 26, 1920, the women's suffrage movement accomplished its goal through the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. - Excerpt from President Bush’s 2004 Proclamation We are going to go over some of the many aspects of the women’s equality movement today. The National American Woman Suffrage Association and the National Woman's Party of whom were already mentioned blazing the trail to voter status and thus pioneering the fight for women’s equal rights. To the NOW ( National organization for women ) movement. The NOW movement was established in 1966 in the heat of the radical feminist era. They were educated, organized, and determined. They believed in and followed certain “key points”. NOW Statement of Purpose 1966: Key Points: • women's rights as "truly equal partnership with men," "fully equal partnership of the sexes" • focused on activism: "confront, with concrete action, the conditions that now prevent women from enjoying the equality of opportunity and freedom of choice which is their right as individual Americans, as human beings" • women's rights seen in the context of "the world-wide revolution of human rights"; equality of women as an opportunity to "develop their fullest human potentials"
SISTERHOOD
Provided by FISCSI Cultural Committee They come from north, south, east and west They are marching throughout this land It's something that women call Sisterhood That's beginning to take a stand. They are women from every race and creed They are women from all walks of life They are beginning to realize who they are Besides a mother, a lover, or wife.
They are waking up with a mighty voice Against things that some go through Be it abuse, shame, or just the 'game' They are shouting they are through! They're taking a stand against violence Against discrimination everywhere They've found the 'system' may fail them And society may no longer care. Women all ages are fighting back For the places that they should be In the college, the public or workplaceIn a world that only they see.
• purpose to put women in the "mainstream of American political, economic and social life" • NOW's commitment "equality, freedom, and dignity for women" specifically defined as not being about "special privilege" for women or "enmity towards men" They also zoned in on key feminist issues in statement of purpose such as: • employment -- the most attention in the document is to issues around employment and economics • education • family including marriage and divorce laws, home responsibilities by gender role • political participation: in parties, decision-making, candidates (NOW was to be independent of any particular political party) • images of women in the media, in culture, in laws, in social practices • briefly addressed issue of "double discrimination" of African American women, linked women's rights to broader issues of social justice including racial justice • opposition to "protectiveness" in work, school, church, etc. NOW set up task forces on issues of women’s equality. The seven original NOW task forces were: 1. Education Education was one of the most important issues for the founders of NOW. 2. Equal Opportunity of Employment This issue was central to the creation of NOW. 3. Legal and Political Rights NOW has been at the forefront of many legal battles. 4. Women in Poverty Members of NOW wanted to address the economic concerns of women. 5. Family Family concerns have always been a part of feminism. 6. The Image of Women Feminists paid a lot of attention to media portrayal of women. 7. Women and Religion Several theologians took part in NOW and contributed to feminist theory. As sad as it is to say that now over 40 years later these issues in fact remain issues. It is uplifting to know that even though we are a ways away from reaching the goal of total equality that the gap has since closed dramatically since the days of Susan B. Anthony. Women and men alike have taken up this cause whether it be politically, in the work place, or just in their everyday lives as human beings which means we are still heading in the right direction and will reach that goal soon enough.
Women are demanding due respect For jobs well done each day For hard work in the home or office For fair and equal pay. The old saying "It's a mans' world", Is one that's no longer true For women are now getting educated Until they finally see this through. So never underestimate the Sisterhood Or the women who now join hands For the cause of saying "We are WOMENwho are here to change this land!!"

rocks have dislodged onto the trail. Several items needed on this hike include: plenty of water, snacks, some comfortable shoes or boots, and a flashlight since the central path goes through several very long train tunnels which are nearly pitch black at their midpoints. There is no place to purchase any items once you are at the reserve. The reserve's offices may be contacted at 0931-95-4805. "Valle Dell Anapo" or Valley of Anapo is a beautiful Sicilian reserve that was created through a "tracks to trails" project from the remnants of an old train track which winds alongside and over the Anapo River. The reserve is located near the town of Sortino, Sicily and offers amazing views of the Anapo Valley which is filled with flowers, trees, wildlife and crystal clear fish filled pools alongside the Anapo River. In addition to the scenic views, alongside the path is the "Necropolis de Pantalica," a seemingly limitless number of tombs carved out of the sheer cliff walls dating back several thousand years. This trip can make a wonderful solo adventure or can be taken through Adventures Unlimited. Site: The site earns a solid five star rating for the diverse hiking and walking trails as well as the scenery and history that accompanies them. The highlights of this location include a lack of people, peaceful surroundings, and wide open spaces that allow for a relaxing stroll. There are several places along the trail that allow hikers to get off the central path and hike side trails which criss-cross through the woods. The central trail is where the train tracks used to be, leaving a wide gradual sloping path which winds through the valley. The central trail stretches several miles from the entrance, but conveniently located at the 1.75 mile point is an abandoned train station. This station has out house style restroom facilities and benches to rest on, making it an ideal turn-around point. There is no fee to enter the reserve and the hike from the entrance to the train station is a gradual incline gaining 600 ft. in altitude. Bicycles are only allowed on certain days or by special request. For The Valle Del Anapo hiking trail was built planning purposes, the reserve is closed on the remains of an old train line leaving for three days after a rain to ensure no a wide and level path for the entire hike.

room facilities along the path which may make the trail uncomfortable for some hikers. However, the paths are perfectly accessible for sturdy wheel chairs or strollers as well and the reserve offers more challenging opportunities immediately off of the main trail for those who want variety. Accessibility: This site rates five stars for accessibility because it is offered by Adventures Unlimited making the drive there simple. However, if attempting to find this location on one's own it is closer to a two star rating due to the challenging hair-pin alpine turns,
complex directions, and limited parking at the site. The basic directions to reach the reserve from NAS II are to take SS417 towards Catania then get on A18 towards Augusta. A18 will turn into SS114. Stay on SS114 past the August exit and take the Sortino exit. The reserve is located outside of Sortino, Sicily. Contact Adventures Unlimited at 624-4177 or the reserve's office at 0931-95-4805 for further details. Travel Time: This location rates three out of five stars because the travel time is approximately an hour and thirty minutes.
In addition to the main trail, there are many side trails which allow hikers to see the raw beauty of the reserve.

100 ways to Conserve Water #1 There are a number of ways to save water, and they all start with you. #2 When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water. #3 Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice-makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for significant water savings. #4 Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street. #5 Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month. #6 Choose shrubs and groundcovers instead of turf for hard-to-water areas such as steep slopes and isolated strips. #7 Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps. #8 Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost vegetable food waste instead and save gallons every time. #9 Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful. #10 For cold drinks keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain. #11 Monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you discover leaks. #12 Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temper atures are cooler to minimize evaporation. #13 Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. #14 Spreading a layer of organic mulch around plants retains moisture and saves water, time and money. #15 Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk and save water every time. #16 If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model. #17 Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants. #18 If water runs off your lawn easily, split your watering time into shorter periods to allow for better absorption. #19 We're more likely to notice leaks indoors, but don't forget to check outdoor faucets, sprinklers and hoses for leaks. #20 If you have an automatic refilling device, check your pool periodically for leaks.
Join us here next week for another 20 of the top 100 ways to conserve water.

On the Go with MWR I Canyon. Can you? Experience Sicily like never before! ITT Gear-n-Go has teamed up with Aquaterra for a canyoning adventure through Alcantara Gorge. A short distance from Taormina, Alcantara Gorge features lush vegetation, wild life and a massive lava rock canyon carved out by the river that runs through it. Aquaterra, an adventure club that specializes in outdoor recreation excursions, sets up canyoning trips up the river. The water of Gole Alcantara remains the same icy temperature year round, never exceeding 14° C (57° F). Aquaterra pro-
vides Neoprene wetsuits and water shoes for all canyoning participants, which staves off the chill of the water. Guides stagger themselves down the river, as ropes float at the top of the water. The current of the river is very strong and fighting against it feels like no movement at all. The ropes make it possible to pull oneself up to the next landing point. As one zigzags up the river, it’s hard not to be taken in by the way the sunlight parts the trees high up above and filters down the silvery basalt walls.
When it is finally time to return to the mouth of the river, participants are instructed to lay back and let the current carry them down, like a natural waterslide. Adventurers leave the gorge happy, tired, and most importantly, hungry. After leaving the park, participants head to Agriturismo San Cataldo where they are served a 6course traditional Sicilian meal. After lunch, the agriturismo has its own tarzaning adventure park. “Tarzaning” is a combination of rope bridges, climbing and zip lines. Participants are given harnesses and

A group of mercenaries is hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren't quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge -- one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers. Barney Ross is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as “removing those hard to get at stains.” The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas, former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang, a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar, who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road, a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen, a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons. When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza, the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra, a local freedomfighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe and his henchman Paine. When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul: his own. (103 min.)

Space A travel: the Myths and Facts Story by: Casey Johnson NAS Sigonella Air Terminal Recently, we have had a number of travelers at the Air Terminal who were unfamiliar with some of the basic rules governing Space Available travel. Here is a quick reminder: Space-available travel may not be used for TDY, TAD, or PCS travel. If leave is authorized in conjuction with TDY or TAD orders, the travel to and from the PDS and TDY/TAD location must be space-required (funded) travel with the traveler in a duty status. At the TDY/TAD location, the traveler may utilize SpaceAvailable opportunities while in a leave status. Dependents may not use space-available travel options to accompany their sponsor on spacerequired travel or to travel to or from a sponsor's restricted or all others (unaccompanied) tour location (As per 4515.13-R Ref.C6.1.4, Page 76/77 (paraphrased)). All of us benefit from being able to take advantage of the Patriot Express on a space available basis when we are on leave. This is a
great morale booster. We could lose it very easily, though, through lack of use by funded passengers. SpaceAvailable transportation doesn't make the Navy any money, so contracts are written with projected numbers for funded passengers (TDY/TAD/PCS). If the projected usage level isn't met, the contract cannot be justified and will shrink or even go away permanently. Leaders, in spite of a popular misconception, there is no such thing as a "no-cost travel order." This is a mechanism to protect our Sailors from being told they must use their earned leave to travel to a TDY/TAD location.
Each respective command must fund the travel for all TDY/TAD assignments. In fact, in the AMC msg DTG 13 Apr 2006: NO COST TDY TRAVEL, air terminals are directed to deny travel to passengers seeking travel to TDY locations on "no cost travel orders." That being said, in some cases there are procedures that enable the proverbial "Free Airlift" when on official travel (usually only reachable within theater). If you have any questions, please contact Passenger Services at the Air Terminal for further assistance at 624-5576/6725/2761.
No Old Bold Pilots By NAS Sigonella Security A friend of mine, a former F-18 pilot, once told me, "There are boldpilots, and there are old pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots." Of course the implication is that a risktaker will reap consequences. And thesame concept applies to motorcyclists. The Security Department hasresponded to 4 motorcycle accidents this year, 3 resulted in some type ofinjury. Inherently, motorcycling involves a certain amount of risk. Andjust like a good pilot who always checks the weather before taking off, agood motorcyclist will always assess the risk before starting out on a ride. Some of the risk factors to be considered include, especially in Italy: Speed. Italians and Americans motorist drive without due regard to postedspeed limits. Both motorist pass on curves and on the left side of singlelane traffic. Lighting Conditions. Most roads are not adequately lit during night timehours causing visibility to be limited. Alcohol Consumption. Drinking
