Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment, Jackalyne Pfannenstiel visited Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Sept. 29, to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony officially celebrating the new addition of fully operational solar panels. These solar panels, along with the addition of electric vehicles, are a part of the steps that NAS Sigonella have completed to meet Executive Order 13423, established by the Department of the Navy in 2007.

Executive Order 13423 is a set of aggressive goals to increase combat effectiveness. The main objectives of these goals are to increase tactical and shore energy security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Energy is a very important strategic resource for the Navy,” Pfannenstiel said. “We use a lot of it and we need to make sure we’re using it as economically, as efficiently and as strategically as we can. Besides, we spend a lot of money on energy so we are always looking for ways to make it less expensive for us.” ENERGY, continued on page 12

Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Commanding Officer, Capt. Scott Butler joined members of Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) in the CO’s conference room Sept. 12 for the signing of the Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) Proclamation which runs through October. According to http://dvam.vawnet.org/, DVAM evolved from the "Day of Unity" in October 1981 conceived by the National Coalition against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national levels. So far this fiscal year, there have been 16 reports of domestic violence

throughout the NAS Sigonella base. This year’s theme for DVAM is “One Voice, Against Domestic Violence”. “What I would like to see this year is that one person, whether it be a mother, father, aunt, uncle, co-worker, Airman, Marine or Sailor standing up and making their voice count,” Counseling and Advocacy Program (CAP) Manager Elinor Cantrell said. “That voice can make a difference in saving a life.” This year is also focused on the national symbol against the domestic violence, the purple ribbon. According to the website, there are a number of sources who have been credited with the creation of the purple ribbon and its significance towards DVAM. However, according to Cantrell, the meaning comes from the tragic story of Lisa Bianca who lived during the 1980’s and had two children and a very abusive husband. When Bianca left her husband and got a re-

straining order against him, he reacted by kidnapping the two children before being caught and sentenced to prison for two years. When the husband was released, he tracked down Bianca once more and this time, he murdered her. Bianca’s favorite color was purple and at the time of her death was working at a women’s shelter, so the women at the shelter made purple ribbons in honor of Bianca which the community stood behind, and the purple ribbon has been the main symbol against domestic violence since. “Today, we do the Purple Ribbon Campaign which you will be able to see all over base for the month of October,” Cantrell said. “You can also come by Fleet and Family and pick your own purple ribbon at the front desk.” For more information on what you can do to help prevent domestic violence, contact Cantrell at 624-4291 or visit the website at http://dvam.vawnet.org/.

Ombudsmen from NAS Sigonella and its tenant commands were honored at luncheon on Oct. 4 to recognize their role in the Navy. The event was hosted by FFSC and is held annually during the month of October.

Direct Line I remain incredibly proud of the amazing work being performed by so many here at NASSIG. These efforts truly reflect the dedication and passion that each of you have for our mission and they have ensured the success of ongoing operations against Libya for the past few months. One such example has been the incredible work of LT Phil ‘WuFAT’ Romeo and his team of reservists, who, along with Seabees from NMCB-5 and NMCB-74, worked tirelessly to stand up and run a “tent city” for hundreds of US and Coalition servicemembers. The degree of professionalism that the exhibited everyone has come to expect from everyone in Sigonellathat is shown every day by those stationed here has become the reputation of Sigonella. It has been amazing to watch this process move forward and we’re now in the process of transitioning the residents of “tent city” to more permanent quarters in the newly-renovated Building 623. This couldn’t happen soon enough as the rainy season will soon be upon us,

and I ask for everyone’s continued cooperation to ensure a smooth transition. October marks the beginning of the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) – its 50th Anniversary! Throughout its history, CFC has contributed over $7 billion to more than 2,500 worthy charities. Last year alone, NAS Sigonella contributed more than $122,000 to local and national charities. If you tuned in to Feedback Live on Thursday – and I know you all did!! — you may have even seen some Sigonellans help kick-off the campaign by signing their pledges live on the show. Remember, CFC is the once a year opportunity for members of the military – and the entire DOD – to donate to any of the worthwhile organizations. Although there are many organizations that are worthy of your consideration, I’d like to single out the Family Youth Service Program (FYSP). In the 2010 campaign, the Sigonella community donated over $10,000 to this group, which then returns the donations to our com-

mand for use in MWR programs throughout the installation. This fund helped support everything from baseball jerseys to visiting authors and is a wondrful way to directly support everything that helps make Sigonella such a great place to call home. I’m sure that as the CFC reps contact each of you, the generosity that this Community has shown in the past will once again come through and we’ll surpass last year’s total. I hope you’ll mark your calendars for the annual Fall Festival, which will be held on the 28th and 29th of October. This Festival is another great opportunity to come out with the family, have some fun and support the Base as we open our doors to the local community. The Festival will include rides, a haunted house, food and more! The NASSIG Community has many things to be proud of and the Fall Festival is one of the best opportunities to share this time with our host nation, and Coalition, friends. If you were here for the July 4th Celebration, you know how much fun these events

are and you won’t want to miss this one. As many of you have heard, our Sigonella Jaguar football team had to reluctantly cancel the remainder of the season. Although I was sorry to learn about this, it was unquestionably the right decision in order to ensure that our students didn’t endanger themselves unecessarily. For you seniors, I understand that this is especially difficult, but I encourage you all to continue your involvement in the school sports programs. I hope you know that your NAS Sigonella family stands behind you and remains ready to support all of the teams this year. To the Sigonella community, there are always opportunities to get involved with the sports program: coaching, joining the booster club, or officiating are just some of the many ways we can show our support. Come out to the games, including volleyball, tennis

and cross country during Homecoming this weekend, and root on the Jaguars as they continue to represent us with style! Thank you again, Sigonella, for being the Ambassadors that you are and for your continued hard work. You all are truly the “Pride of the Med.”

Operation Re-establishment By EOCN Barton NMCB-5

On their first “Green” deployment in two years, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5 was given Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella as one of the many Detachment (DET) sites. While all of these Seabees are well qualified and highly motivated, the majority of them are still fairly new to not just NMCB 5 but to the Navy as well. Nevertheless, the mission they are tasked with undertaking could possibly affect the future of untold generations of Seabees to follow them. The immediate mission is one that the Seabee community is all too NMCB-5, continued on page 12
