IGONELLA, Sicily (NNS) -- Members of Naval Air Station Sigonella's (NAS) First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) conducted a base clean-up project onboard NAS Sigonella Support Base, Jan. 27. The project marks the continuation of a long-standing commitment of the association to come together routinely to make improvements to the base’s landscape. "Here in Sigonella we (the FCPOA) have a lot of pride in how our base looks," said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jared Anderson, FCPOA president. "That’s why we pick out the most neglected spot on base each month and dedicate a little time to sprucing it up. When one of our first members said how messy the picnic area behind the Navy Exchange (NEX ) was, we decided to show it a little love.” Dividing into groups the participants devoted an hour of their day clearing trash and debris from the road leading to the picnic area and the brush around it. “This area was really messy,” said 11-year-old dependent, Allison

Delano. “It didn’t take long before we filled a lot of trash bags. We also picked up some rusted out trash cans, plastic wrap, a car battery and even an old tire.” According to Navy Counselor 1st Class Daniela Cossio, despite the concentrated effort the area could still use some more fixing up. “Hopefully we can come out next time with the help of a couple other associations and clean some of the larger debris out,” Cossio said. aval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Elementary School held its first spelling bee competition at Knight's Hall on Jan. 26. Fifteen students from third to fifth grade participated in the event. Margaret Russo, information specialist for Sigonella Elementary School, worked with Catherine Indresano, educational technologist, to bring the competition to NAS Sigonella. The spelling bee is part of the nationally known Scripps Spelling Bee held annually in Washington, D.C. since 1925 (with the exception of three years during World War II). “In most elementary schools in the states there is a spelling bee,” said Russo. “So we felt like there was something missing that we wanted to bring to our schools.” According to Russo, the students have been really eager to learn new words and have been studying hard to prepare for the spelling bee. The student’s preparation was tested the day of the competion. After 10 rounds, Sienna Crumpacker was declared the winner after correctly spelling the word “mortgage”. Lucas Bertnik took second place with Nicholas Gonzalez placing third. As the winner, Crumpacker will be going to Germany for the Europe-wide spelling bee on March 17. The winner of that spelling bee goes on to the televised Scripps Spelling Bee. In addition to the trip, Crumpacker receives a Middlebury Interactive Languages course and a one year subscription to Encyclopedia Brittanica. Overall, the first annual NAS Sigonella Spelling Bee was a success. “It helped to get the kids interested in words and language and spelling,” said Russo. “They’re really excited when they discover something new.”

ello Sigonellans, the Navy has invested considerable time and resources to ensure that the NASSIG Community is as prepared as possible for whatever may come; however, all of our planning and preparation will only succeed if each of us is informed and actively prepare contingency plans and be able to act on those plans when the need arises. Recently we saw strikes being conducted in our local community which caused substantial delays in transportation which affected delivery of gas, food and other common items. We soon realized that some items many of us take for granted, such as meats, milk and fruits can quickly disappear off the shelves. Such unexpected occurrences, like strikes and natural occurrences (floods, eruptions, etc.) are why our Emergency Management Office recommends that we maintain a five-day emergency supply of food and water, as well as an emergency kit including a battery-powered radio, flashlights and other important safety measures at all times in our homes. These preparations will assist us in overcoming most any issues that arise. Despite the inconveniences caused by the strike, our communication proved ex-
cellent! The NASSIG Community spread throughout the island showed a true spirit of community as we looked out for each other; including posting updated information via Facebook such as locations of strikes, traffic impairments or available gas and food. We proved that as long as we maintained constant and timely communication, our community could overcome any temporary or potential issues. Speaking of being prepared, PRT season is just around the corner. What are you doing to stay in shape? Beside the many fitness classes being offered by MWR, intramural basketball has started, which is a great way to get into better shape while having fun. This is not to mention our youth sports. It is never too early to impart that culture of fitness to our young ones. So get out, get active, and enjoy staying in shape! Last but not least, the NMCRS fund drive officially begins, March 1, and runs through the end of the month. In the past year, NMCRS gave $49.9 million in financial assistance to nearly 100,000 Sailors and Marines, that’s almost one-in-five Sailors
and Marines. This is a program that has helped military personnel everywhere, more importantly; it’s helped Sailors here in Sigonella. So I ask that you take them into consideration when donating as it is truly a great cause. You never know who you may be helping.

New Rental Partnership Program improves NAS Sigonella housing options on the economy

o, here we are at last. Our panelists are down to their final picks of the year. Sadly, all good things must come to an end, but what better way to go out than with the Super Bowl?! We asked our panelists to pick the winner, MVP and over/under for Super Bowl XVLI. As a bonus, we added the regular season offensive and defensive Players of the Year (POY). We want to thank our panelists for participating and all of Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella for reading our column dedicated to America’s Game! Enjoy Super Bowl Sunday NAS Sigonella, and don’t drink and drive.
Page Call it destiny or fate or whatever you wish, but here we are. After the Giants ended the hopes of the Patriots unblemished season when the Giants won Super Bowl XLII. Now the Patriots get their chance for yet another Super Bowl win and cement Brady and Belichick as the best Coach/QB combo of all time (Sorry Shula and Marino - you have to win a Super Bowl). For those that don't think the Patriots will be prepared this time,
members stationed at Sigonella. NAS Sigonella Executive Officer, Commander Eric Vosler, signed the new Rental Partnership Program (RPP) agreement into order on Jan. 26. The NAS Sigonella RPP focuses on landlords not requiring deposits, providing rent incentives and remo-
ving the credit report requirements for service members to lease housing. “This is a big step. This is the first time in Italy that the Navy has done something like this,” Vosler said. “We encourage this partnership and cooperation.” According to Personnel Support
think again. Although Gronkowski tweaked an ankle during the AFC Championship game, he will be back and the Giants will have an extremely hard time trying to contain him. I think the Giants understand that and know that is their key to winning, however, they lose track of Wes Welker as he will rack up over 120 yards receiving and the Patriots win 38-20.
With that said, I have a hard time believing Tom Brady is going to have two mediocre weeks in a row. This game is payback for the last Super Bowl when these teams went head to head, no doubt about it. Tom Brady, in an interview, expressed that he still hasn't watched the game tape from that Super Bowl, because it's too painful. He is out for redemption, and with one of the best tight end
Silveri Ladies and Gentlemen,it saddens me to be writing the last NFL Panel Pick of the Week. It has been a fun ride and I thank everyone for reading. On to this week's pick... This is a tough, tough pick. The G-Men are on a hot streak, and the Pats didn't win their conference game in very convincing fashion.
Director for NAS Sigonella Housing Jim Veazey, the RPP, modified from a program used in the United States, was initiated in an effort to improve NAS Sigonella Housing regulations. “We saw some issues months back,” said Veazey. “The expectations of the NAS Sigonella service members were not being met, so we developed a program where we standardized what we call a traditional American expectation of a home.” As part of the first step toward implementing the program, representatives of agencies in the local economy have gone through some training and have signed the agreement. “The new agreement will bring new and better homes for incoming service members to select from,” said Veazey. “It will also limit the number of days that they’re in Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA). In the past we had a problem where service members were waiting up to 60 days on TLA because we were waiting to get our houses ready. Well, we have set the new standard in agreement with our partners and the agencies in our community that no properties are in
tandems in football, I think he's going to get it. Justin Tuck and the Giants D-line will be in Brady's face all night, but in the end of this shootout the Pats will come out victorious.
McHenry Okay, so time to finish strong...man this has been a tough year...for me and my beloved Ea-
our system unless it can be ready for rent in two weeks.” The NAS Sigonella Housing Department expects the program to improve as time goes by and as the agencies in the community become more comfortable and better educated about the RPP agreement. The program will also implement new online capabilities which will give service members a chance to view potential homes before they arrive to the island. “Our system will also be upgrading this summer to the AHRN (Automated Housing Referral Network) which is a worldwide DOD initiative,” Veazey said. To build upon improvements, the NAS Sigonella Housing Department has also begun conducting surveys with each customer who goes out to view the properties. After the surveys are complete, the department passes the information onto the realtors so they can make enhancements to the properties. “Everything we try to do is geared towards making the quality of life as close to American as we can,” Veazey said.
gles. The Super Bowl XLVI winner will be the NY Giants. Hey, they did it four years ago to a much better Patriots team, and with the poor defense this Patriots team is bringing to the big game, you have to go with the Giants. Eli Manning will prove that he, and not his brother, Peyton, is the better Manning in the family with not only his second Super Bowl ring, but also the MVP of this year's Super Bowl.

ilitary Saves is a DOD-wide financial readiness campaign to help military service members and family members reduce debt and save money. The campaign is designed to ensure personal financial readiness and positively impact the nation’s personal and household saving rates. It encourages service members to: - Develop a personal saving plan - Enlist strategies to establish good credit - Focus on saving a portion of each paycheck - Enroll in SGLI, TSP, and when eligible, the saving deposit plan. Military Saves encourages the defense credit unions and military banks to aggressively promote automatic deposits to saving accounts, and asks financial counselors to promote saving money while simultaneously decreasing debt reduction. The success of the program is found at the local military installation where commander’s support, installations activities, and numerous local organizations join together in a coordinated effort to help military members ensure positive financial management.

Agrigento, which according to Greek poet Pindar is the “most beautiful city of mortals,” is hosting the 67 annual Almond Blossom Festival and the prestigious International Folklore Festival through Feb. 12 ( Photo by http://www.iburgisidimarsala.eu)
It’s that time of the year again! Almond trees are already in full blossom as they dot the enchanting Greek archeological site of Agrigento, which features traces of an ancient and proud civilization. It’s a natural wonder which provides a unique and breathtaking spectacle. Agrigento annually celebrates the beauty of this ancient tree through the 67th annual International Folklore Festival, Feb. 5 through Feb. 12. The almond is considered a symbol of rebirth and beauty. The almond tree is the first to bloom after the winter season. According to legend, the origin of the almond tree is rooted in a Greek mythological story. It tells of the beautiful princess, Phyllis who thought she had been deserted by Demophoon, a Greek king whom she loved. Demophoon had left Phyllis to return to Athens for a short visit but didn’t come back for months. Phyllis died of a broken heart, thinking that her true love had abandoned her. A goddess, moved by the tragedy of her death, turned her into a barren almond tree. Demophoon did return, and upon his
delayed arrival he embraced the barren almond tree that was once his love. It burst forth into full bloom. Every year, at the beginning of February, the farmers of Naro, a small village in the Agrigento province, celebrate the early almond blooming with songs, dances and float parades. The origins of the festival date back to the 1930s. The festival also helped to promote local community produce. Through the years, the festival, which was moved to Agrigento, earned an international reputation as a celebration of peace and friendship that involves folklore groups from all over the world. The festival will kick off on Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. with folklore parades to be held in the historic center. Don’t miss to see the spectacular torchlight parade on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. also in the historic center. Shows featuring folklore groups from a dozen countries will be held on Feb. 8, 9 and 11 at the Palacongressi, which is a convention center situated in Villaggio Mosè, a small town located just outside Agrigento. The last day of the festival, Feb. 12, will feature an ama-

BY ANSA Italians do it better, according to judges at this year's Sigep, the International Exposition for Artisan Gelato, Pastry, Confectionery and Bakery production held in the Adriatic town of Rimini. Thirteen nations competed at this year's 33rd edition wrapping up on Wednesday. Representatives from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Morocco, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland and the USA competed by creating delicacies to express the theme Fruits of the Earth and the Sea. Each nation chose five professionals as representatives included a team manager, captain ice cream maker, pastry chef, ice sculptor and for the first time this year, a chef. Over four days contestants challenged each other, putting in 2,500 hours of working, cooking and creating. An ice-cream cake, decorative table services, fanciful take-away packaging, and cone alternatives made of ice cream, ice and chocolate were fruits of the competi-
tors' imaginations as they chipped, whipped and swirled their ways towards the final awards ceremony. Gelato maestro from the Friuli region Leonardo Ceschin posted on his social network that the idea of entering a competition without knowing the ingredients was an "intriguing undertaking" that he did with great pleasure. The 60-year-old ice-cream maker, whose shop Esquimau has long been a point of reference in his home town of Pordenone, won the gold in the Gelato category. Other winners were Ernst Knam from Milano for his chocolate sculpture, Francesco Falasconi from the town of Tavullia near Rimini for his ice sculpture and chef Filippo Novelli from Turin. There to support the Italian team was chocolate pastry expert Andrea Olivero and team manager Pierpaolo Magni who, together with Diego Crosara, whipped the team into shape. All events were covered through direct streaming and bilingual commentaries in English and Italian.
n Saturday, Jan. 21, a group of Gela Kiwanis Club leaders, led by Dr. Giuseppe Abbate, visited Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella and toured the U.S. Air Force Global Hawk facilities. The tour was hosted by Lt.Col Paul Wojtowicz, commanding officer, U.S. Air Force Global Hawk and Capt. Bruce Black, commanding officer of U.S. Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS). This tour marked the first time in the history of Sigonella that a group of distinguished Italian guests had the chance to see a Global Hawk unmanned airplane and its ground control station. “The Gela Kiwanis Club has always been a key part in the remembrance ceremonies for those Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen that participated in Operation Husky in July 1943,” said Capt. Black. “Each year there is a Ponte Dirillo ceremony held in the beautiful town of Gela honoring the WWII allied troops that landed in Sicily and liberated the island from the Nazi-Fascism. It was a welcome opportunity for us to give them a chance to visit NAS Sigonella, tour the U.S. Air Force Global Hawk facilities and aircraft and host them for lunch at the NASSIG Galley.” Gela Kiwanis Club official Dr. Abbate said his fellow Kiwanians were enthusiastic about having had the opportunity to see a Global Hawk static display and strengthen the ties of friendship that unite the Sigonella and Gela communities.

n Sunday, Jan. 29, Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella hosted a group of Italian guests from the Catania Stesicoro Lions Club who got the unique chance to have a close look at the U.S. Navy and Air Force assets deployed in Sicily through a PAO sponsored base tour. After a tour of Midtown and the NAS I Fire Station, visitors had the chance to have a "sailor-styled lunch" at the NAS II Galley where they sampled some traditional American food. Lions Club members also experienced P-3 and Global Hawk static displays at the VP-47 PATRON SIG and Global Hawk Det.4 hangars and met pilots and crewmembers. This provided them with the unique opportunity to see pilot’s gear and equipment. Visitors were enthralled by seeing the world's most sophisticated U.S. Air Force unmanned aircraft whose surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities are top-notch. The tour also included a stop at the Italian Air Force 41st Stormo Radar and Weather Stations. Snowboarding on Mt. Etna A night at the opera BY JENNY RAISANEN Guest Writer
I
While living in Sicily take advantage of the unique opportunity to ski or snowboard on Mt. Etna. Pictured above, Jenny Raisanen takes on the north side of Mt. Etna. (Photo by Cynthia Presnell) BY JENNY RAISANEN Guest Writer
Y
ou may be one of those rationally minded people that cannot fathom how in the world it’s possible to enjoy frolicking in the snow – on a volcano! I know what you mean. From our view here in Sigonella, it’s hard to see all of the fun-in-the-snow possibilities that exist on Mt. Etna’s north side. I recently braved the elements, donning snowboard pants, thermal underwear, multiple layers of socks and tops, hand warmers inside my gloves, goggles, my ski jacket and helmet, and an overdose of self-confidence, courage and enthusiasm. Amidst the wind and chilly weather conditions, I could see the smiles on the faces of those who were also brave enough to bear the elements. ITT offers outdoor recreation (ODR) trips. If you don’t have your own snowboard gear, you can rent the necessary apparel at ITT and purchase a discounted lift ticket. Since road conditions on the north side can be questionable, I have found the ODR snowboarding trips to be well worth the cost! During the months of January and February, and possibly into March, there are four ODR snowboarding trips headed to the north side. If you forgot to purchase your discounted lift ticket through ITT, you can purchase a lift ticket at the ski lift, for approximately 20 euros. If would prefer to ski, you can rent ski equipment at the ski lift from “La Capan-
netta,” (Piano Provenzana s.n. – Etna Nord – 95015 Linguaglossa “CT” Tel. 328 9129666 – lacapannetta@virgilio.it) which offers a 30% discount to military I.D. card holders. La Capannetta is right next to the ski lift. It is important to note that there is no ski lodge, i.e. restaurant at the ski lift. Our ODR bus driver stopped in Linguaglossa to allow us the opportunity to purchase paninis for lunch. The next time that I hit the north side on my snowboard, I will bring a thermos full of hot tea, my camelback full of water, a second thermos full of piping hot soup, and a thermal blanket. Because there is no restaurant at the ski lift, the only refuge from the snow is the ODR bus! To be fair, the ski lift does boast very clean bathrooms with toilet seats and toilet paper. Snowboarding on Mt. Etna’s north side is a unique experience. For some unexplained reason, the locals don’t share the snow lover’s excitement or enthusiasm for blue lips and a freezing face while careening down the side of a snow-laden volcano where volcanic rocks and craters peak out from under the snow on either side of the groomed run. As a result, the handful of people I encountered on the run spoke English, even the locals that work at the ski lift. If you want to avoid the crowds, then grab your snowboard and meet me on the north side!
f you’ve ever been curious about what an ITT trip to the opera entails, let me share my experience with you. On Tuesday, Jan. 24, about 15 of us departed the ITT parking lot at 4 p.m. on a small bus headed for the Bellini Opera House in downtown Catania. The bus contained a mix of older adults, single young adults, couples of all ages in between, and a group of women going out for a night on the town. Everyone had one thing in common. They were all very well dressed for the occasion. Since we had to be in our seats by 5:30 p.m., there wasn’t much time to waste at a nearby bar while we scarfed down mini pizzas and, of course, gelato. The feature that evening was “Carmen,” an opera written by a French composer, set in Spain, and sung in Italian. Carmen held all of the elements of a grand opera: romance, murder, beauty, mystery and intrigue. Four acts later, the opera came to its finale at around 9:15 p.m. amidst shouts of “Bravo! Bravo!” It was indeed an opera worthy of bravado! After the conclusion of the opera, I felt quite Italian, as I was ready to go to dinner at such a late hour. It is important to note that the opportunity to eat something substantial during intermission at the Bellini Opera House is non-existent. To prepare for the evening, I ate a late lunch around 2:30 p.m., followed by the mini pizza and gelato with my friends before the show began. On the way back from the opera, everyone on the bus was very quiet, letting the magic of the evening sink in. That’s the beauty of an ITT trip: you leave the driving to someone else as you kick back and enjoy the ride. Gallery and floor seats for the Bellini Opera House are usually available on a monthly basis at ITT. Gallery seats are less expensive, and are up high; while floor seats are more expensive. Prices fluctuate periodically, so it is best to call ITT at 624-4777 or 6244396 for current pricing information. I hope to see you at the Opera in February!

Make traditional Sicilian Octopus Salad BY ANDREA CAROBENE Guest Writer
2
T
he octopus salad is popular and easy to find at all restaurants and fish markets. And, it’s easy to prepare! Plus, it's a value for your money because you use 90%, if not more of it. When you buy octopus out in the market, ask the vendor to clean it for you. Just ask, “Me lo puo' pulire per favore?” If they are too busy and can’t clean it for you, don’t let that discourage you from making this simple dish. When you get home turn the body part inside out and take out the intestines, then rinse the octopus under water.
Octopus Salad Recipe
1
Bring water to a boil and let the octopus boil for approx. 20-25min. When the fork penetrates easily the octopus is ready.
2 3 4
Let the octopus cool down.
Cut the octopus in half and remove the beak. Cut the rest in small pieces.
Dress with approximately 1 TBSP of olive oil, the juice of half a lemon, parsley and salt. Crushed red pepper or 1 clove of garlic is optional.

AIMD builds propellers used in vital operations
Members of 400 Division at Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Detachment (AIMD) prepare to move propeller blades for inspection, January 25. Their efforts with the propellers were essential in support of NATO Resolution 1973 operations in Libya. (U.S. Navy Photo by MR2 Gary Spence)
BY MR2 GARY SPENCE NAS Sigonella Public Affairs
In an average year, the propeller shop at Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Detachment (AIMD), builds approximately 10 propeller assemblies. The propellers are used on deployed C-130 Hercules and P-3 Orion aircraft supporting various operations in and around the Mediterranean. But, 2011 was anything but average. US and NATO forces were engaged in Operations Unified Protector, Odyssey Dawn, and conducting antipiracy operations. The propeller shop at Sigonella assembled 24 propellers - doubling the workload. Each propeller assembly is a complex arrangement of computer machined gears, forged aluminum blades, and advanced composite com-
ponents. Each propeller requires a team of three skilled technicians to assemble and test for pitch changes, blade angle, leakage, and balance before they are returned to service. The process is tedious and time consuming. To support the fleet, the propeller shop had to operate 24 hours a day. Shop members volunteered to work 12 hour shifts to expedite propeller assembly. According to Leading Petty Officer (LPO) AD2(SW) Joshua Yirkovsky, the increased operations on the flight line and workload in the work center helped build a higher level of camaraderie in the shop. NATO forces have completed Operation Unified Protector and returned home. The U.S. continues to combat piracy and monitor the peace in the Mediterranean and the propeller shop continues to support deployed aircraft.

Experience wine and culinary euphoria
Chef Turi shared his knowledge of food and wine at the Wine and Culinary Experience workshop on Jan. 17.
A
n intimate group of culture seekers gathered on Jan. 17 for a unique opportunity to sit down with one of Sicily’s top chefs and learn about food and wine, ingredients and flavor. Chef Turi Siligato came to the Midtown Classroom with Judeka Winery to launch MWR’s Wine and Culinary Experience series of events where well known Sicilian chefs and wineries give Sigonellans a chance to learn how food and wine are done from those who do it well. Chef Turi shared his expertise with participants as he and his sous chef prepared dishes made with pumpkin, spinach, blood oranges and pasta. He used fresh garlic, pine nuts and all kinds of herbs in his dishes, and explai-
ned where the ingredients came from, how the flavors complimented each other and why they were chosen. The main dish was the falsomagro, also known as brociolone or polpettone (big meatball). It’s a tender baked meat roll stuffed with mortadella, provola and boiled egg. For dessert, he prepared an unconventional cannolo, built with pears and a flat cannolo disk topped with ricotta crème, pistachio crumbs and a bite of Modica chocolate. The Chef paired each dish with some wines he chose from Judeka’s selection to show how to find wines to compliment flavors. The evening left participants stuffed and still hungry for more. The next Wine and Culinary Experience in the series is on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. It features Chef Rita Russotto and Firriato Winery. Chef Rita was born in New York, but fell in love with Sicilian cuisine at a young age. She spent 5 years running the Duomo restaurant in Ragusa, and was a contributor on the cookbook, Sicilia in Cucina. Her husband owns an herb farm in Ragusa, Gli Aromi, and will also be present. Due to space limitations, this event is only be open to 40 people. Make your reservation today at ITT 624-4777 and watch for more events coming soon!

Massage therapy for runners BY JENNIFER BRANCH Guest Writer and Certified Reiki Master
R
unning is one of the hardest sports on the body. Although there are great health benefits, the continual jarring of the body can do quite a bit of damage to the muscles, joints, and spine over a matter of just a few weeks. Sometimes that tightness or soreness in the lower back could be the result of tight glutes or tight hamstrings pulling on that area. So your flexibility program should include stretches for your hamstrings, glutes and quads, as well as your lower back. That’s why it is important to stretch prior to and after running. One way in which runners can get even greater benefits is to regularly seek a massage. Here are some examples of massage that may help you to get that new personal record or help you to just feel better every day. Swedish massage is a more relaxing massage that provides a soft touch body massage. This relaxing experience can be beneficial to runners, athletes, and almost anyone in need of body work. Seitai Shiatsu massage is a pressure point and lymph node massage. It can be used to treat specific problem areas within the muscle tissue and unclog lymph nodes. For runners, this can mean the difference between levels of performance. Sports massage helps reduce the chances of an injury or strain. In many cases, the therapist will provide pre-workout massages to loosen the body before a big run as well as post-workout. Kinesiology can improves posture, gait, structural alignment, and may even tap into mental exercises to enhance performance, and remove emotional stress. Reiki has been known to lower blood pressure and
heart rates, stop pain, connect your body and mind, and help with emotional blockages that can occur due to past injuries or traumas. Myofascial release is a Jennifer Branch great way to stretch the muscles and increase the range of motion, and improve flexibility. This deep tissue type of massage can be used both pre- and post-workout. You can use self-massage to alleviate pains in your own body just by using your hands and other helpful tools to get a nice release of your legs and back. Form a loose fist, and use your knuckles to dig into and knead the lower back area. Pay special attention to the muscles that run up along either side of the spine (don't massage right on the spine). Also try rolling on a lumbar roll to get a lovely release of those tight back muscles and glutes. (It is best to do these while the muscles are warm). Tools that you can use are tennis ball, a lumbar roll, or child’s number 3 soccer ball. The next time you go for a run remember some of these tips: stretch before and after, wear the correct shoes, practice good breathing techniques and do some self-massaging. If you need further help, go to your doctor first. Next, try out one of the amazing massages above and enjoy your pain free record breaking run! Happy Day!
