AIMD, NASSIG community make holiday wishes come true for local children By ASSN Susannah Wilson AIMD The air was filled with excitement on Dec. 18, 2010 for both the children of the Maria Ausiliatrice Institute and for the members of Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Department’s (AIMD) Second Class Petty Officer Association (SCPOA). In an overwhelming act of charity and compassion, the SCOPA worked together with local Italians to provide a better Christmas for some lucky Italian children. For the last few months, the SCPOA has been preparing for the event. First, members began by getting their separate divisions within their commands involved. Members either volunteered for the actual event, or participated by bringing in SANTA, continued on page 12
Members of AIMD and NAS Sigonella served lunch and handed out gifts to children at the Maria Ausiliatrice Institute on Dec. 18. The AIMD second class petty officer association has organized this community relations project successfully for the past two years. Members from the association, along with NAS Sigonella base personnel contributed gifts based off of childrens’ wish lists and they were delivered by “Santa Claus” during a lunch reception.
Command Cyber Readiness Inspection coming to Sigonella By ITSN Katie Dale NCTS The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) will be onboard Naval Air Station Sigonella (NASSIG) the week of Jan. 24 to conduct a Command Cyber Readiness Inspection (CCRI)—a base wide scan and inspection of networks and secure spaces. DISA is a Combat Support Agency that engineers and provides command and control capabilities, as well as, enterprise infrastructure to “continuously operate and assure a global net-centric enterprise in direct support to joint warfighters”. DISA provides capabilities to globally connect, pull information needed for missions, and freely exchange information on the mission at hand. The inspection has been

implemented to examine network infrastructure, traditional/physical security and information awareness. The CCRI will also detect deficiencies in the internal network and wireless systems as well as examine hostbased and system firewalls in place. Upon completion of the CCRI, the team will furnish an out brief and the initial CCRI Compliance Report and brief NCTS Sicily on any critical vulnerabilities, observations, and recommendations for improved security and compliance. The primary areas of concern will be the secure spaces of NAS II. The objective is to evaluate the overall security of an area and to identify the possibility of unauthorized access to the space. If you work in a secure building or a secure space, be aware that inspectors will be looking at ceilings, vents, windows, locks and other aspects of the space that can potentially allow someone to access, or Jan. 8 H: 69 L: 49

obtain material, without proper authority. “If you see an unfamiliar face in a secure space or entering a building without displaying a badge, challenge them. Even if they are with someone you know—challenge them,” said Michelle Kennedy, Assistant Information Assurance Manager for NCTS. Kennedy stresses information security at work and all the time. It is important to remember what is valuable to our mission and practice OPSEC at all times. Physical security that will be examined will also include making sure all accreditation paperwork is in order and that monthly vulnerability scans are taking place and recorded. LDO, CWO communities under review By Commander, Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -In an effort to ensure the right specialists are in the right place, the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) announced Dec. 29 that it has been conducting a review of its technical leadership since August and will brief Navy leadership in early January 2011. The Navy's limited duty officer (LDO) and chief warrant officer (CWO) communities are being evaluated so that the right technical specialists are doing technical leadership jobs, said Capt. John Jones, LDO/CWO community manager at BUPERS. "We want to make sure that we have the right balance within our paygrade structure to allow the opportunity for upward mobility without bottlenecks or even a lack of opportunity at a particular pay grade," said Jones. "Correcting our structure will ensure better opportunities for advancement, manage expectations Jan. 12 H: 62 L: 42

and improve opportunity for many designators – particularly CWOs." The chief of naval personnel ordered the review of both LDO and CWO designators and billets. "The assumption is that all of the billets reviewed are valid work, so what we have done is identify very small designators where the work is done by both LDOs and CWOs," said Jones. "Billets that look like division officer work were transferred from LDO to CWO. Billets that had significant senior positions were transferred from CWO to LDO." Additionally, Jones explained that current senior LDOs and CWOs in positions that may transfer will be continued on active duty. "This 'aging of the workforce' will ensure the Navy gets the technical experts it needs in the future," said Jones. LDOs and CWOs are technical leaders who are selected from the enlisted ranks based on merit, technical knowledge and sound leadership. REVIEW, continued on page 13

Direct Line New Years often acts as a moment of reflection for the majority of us and we tend to set goals during this time designed to better ourselves for the upcoming year. This year I would like to challenge you to improve yourself by furthering your education. This simple task will not only improve your life in a myriad of ways, but will also improve your contribution to those around you as you put your newly acquired knowledge into effect. I have always believed that education is one of the greatest benefits of serving in the Armed Forces. As a service member, veteran, or family member, you are eligible for special opportunities that can help provide money for school, support, and ways to save both time and money. The DoD and Department of Veterans Affairs offer programs to help pay for college. These programs include up to $4,500 a year for Military Tuition Assistance and the GI Bill which can

help cover expenses like tuition, fees, books, and living expenses. In addition to the programs that provide money for school, there are federal and state funded programs that offer support that can help you prepare for success and save time and money. The Defense Activity for Non-Tradition Education Support (DANTES) offers service members the opportunity to take college level equivalency exams that can help you avoid taking classes in subjects you already know - this can save you time and money while you pursue your education. This can also you help identify the "distance learning" programs and classes that can help you earn your degree outside the classroom. Another benefit of attending college is that your years of experience and training as a service member can be applied toward college credit making the path to your degree much shorter than the traditional student. Time talks It’s hard to believe that 2011 is already here. In this article, I’d like to consider time. What is it? Why does it seem to speed up as we get older? (for that matter, why does it seem to slow down while deployed?). Time is elusive. How do you define time? It’s hard to define. We can measure it accurately, but a concrete definition is tough philosophical work. We cannot see time. We cannot even see time under the most powerful scanning electron microscope (SEM). Our incredible olfactory system cannot detect the scent of time. We cannot hear time. Some say boldly, “I have to see something in order to believe it.” While some use this argument against the belief in God; most wouldn’t apply this to time, although, they cannot see time. There are two points upon the earth where it is zero time! That’s right, at the poles. Time lines are vertical, or longitudinal, the lines converge at the poles. However, if you travel to either of the poles and stand in the middle of zero o’clock, you’ll still
age. You see, while we cannot fully understand time, we can at least measure it with devices such as clocks. While we cannot see it, like other empirical substances, we all see the tangible effects of time all around us. We are getting older. We oftentimes try to fight this fact, but time wins, regardless of how much red wine we consume to fight off free radicals. The Second Law of Thermodynamics helps us to understand that material things go from a state of order to disorder over time, due to heat loss, entropy to use a scientific term. I freely acknowledge this “order to disorder” aspect of life. For a lucid example, my little six month old girl’s skin is incredibly soft (skin is an amazing organ); however, my skin—reveals almost 40 years of life upon this terrestrial ball. This is all linked to this mysterious aspect of life we call time. Missionary Adoniram Judson once said, “A life spent is irrevocable. It will remain to be contemplated through eternity…the same may be said of each day. When it is once past, it is gone forever.” That is truly an honest observation of time, “once past, it is gone forever.” This quote is a thought provoking, in my opinion. Again, let’s slow down and think about time. Consider these words from James F. White, former Professor of Liturgical Studies at Drew University, he wrote, “The way we use our time is a good indication of what we consider to be of prime importance in life. We can always be counted on to find time for those things we consider most important though we may not always be willing to admit to others, or even to ourselves, what our real priorities are…whether it is making TIME, continued on page 13

Navy steps up protection of Sailor information By Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -To comply with a Nov. 23 Department of Defense directive aimed at protecting Sailors' personal information, Navy Personnel Command (NPC) will change the method for posting official messages containing partial social security numbers (SSN) on its public website. "All messages to be reviewed were pulled from the Web in December (2010), and NAVADMINS from 2009 and 2010 were scrubbed of personally identifiable information (PII)," said NPC Webmaster Don Koehler. "We reposted the recent ones to the 'NPC Messages Page' after the partial SSNs were removed." According to Koehler, messages from 2008 and earlier that contain PII are not being reposted. These include selection and promotion messages dating back to 2000 that contain partial SSNs and had been available online for many years. Visitors to the public website, www.npc.navy.mil, attempting to open these messages will receive the following response: "The message you have requested has been removed due to a

Clifton: When it comes to the playoffs, experience is the most important asset. Each of the teams I have chosen to win this week is led by an experienced veteran. Colts: Peyton Manning knows how to get it done in the playoffs and will throw his way into the second round. Ravens: Ray Lewis will have his defense pumped up and ready to play. Eagles: Michael Vick and the Eagles have the most explosive offense in the NFL and I do not see the Packers having the speed to match them. Saints: Last year’s Super Bowl Champs are led by the MVP Drew Brees, need I say more? Oh, by the way, they are playing the Seattle Sea Chickens. Game Over Saints Win. Glasser: It never fails, every Colts vs. Jets year in the Chiefs vs. Ravens wild card Eagles vs. Packers round, at least one Seahawks vs. Saints home team loses. Packers pulled out a close win to get to the playoffs, and that’s all the farther they will make it. Mike Vick and the Eagles get revenge from an opening day loss. Eagles win! The Saints vs. Seahawks game will be the blowout of the weekend. Saints roll over the Seahawks! Diem/Rivera: Go JETS!!! they should be dismantled. Sanchez is still a joke. Go Colts. Ravens: Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. That is all. Packers: The game I am going to watch. Both QBs playing phenomenal football. Vick was injured the final game of the season, but I’m sure he will be back in good form for this game. It’s a shootout with the cheeseheads pulling out a win riding the amr of Mr. Rodgers. Saints: I don’t care that this is going to be played at the Seahawks stadium, a 7-9 team does not belong in the playoffs. Drew Brees is not going to let a scrub team ruin his chance for a back to back. Saints get an easy win here.

Empower. Enrich. EDUCATE. Get off on the right financial foot in the New Year
Motta
Alphio
Article credit Orge There's nothing like the New Year to let you wipe the slate clean, forget about past mistakes and make a new start. That's how the tradition of New Year's Resolutions got started and people make them every year. They resolve to lose weight, eat healthier and treat their loved ones better. Granted, most people don't stick to all their resolutions for the whole year. But it's still a great way to achieve selfimprovement because it focuses your thoughts on the areas that need help. And even if you only achieve half of what you set out for, you're still farther along than you were on December 31. With that in mind, here are some New Year's Resolutions for your personal finances. If you try to adopt these into your everyday life, your financial situation will be vastly improved for the new year. I will consider the difference between what I want and what I need before every purchase. Too often we base our buying decision on emotions instead of facts. Spend money only on what you need and you'll significantly reduce your expenses.
I will not let advertising control my purchasing decisions. By definition, an advertisement is designed to benefit the advertiser, by persuading you to purchase their product instead of someone else's, without consideration for your best interests. I will take care of my finances today by making a spending plan to map out my income and expenses. Planning is the key to success in practically all aspects of life. Personal finance is no exception. I will take care of my finances tomorrow by saving for goals, emergencies, and my future. A healthy savings account prevents you from having to borrow money when emergencies happen. I will meet the credit obligations I have made on time and as agreed. If you've had problems in this area, you'll be amazed at how much stress you can eliminate by getting caught up on your bills and debt payments. Also, your credit rating will improve dramatically if you stay on top of your obligations long term. I will continue my personal education about financial health, budgeting, credit, and personal debt. As they say, knowledge is power. The more you understand your finances, the more you'll be able to
Kartodromo
manage them effectively. I will plan, beginning today, for the next holiday season, and will not include credit cards in those plans. By starting early, you'll avoid getting caught up in the shopping frenzy at Christmas time. And by using cash, you'll avoid digging yourself deeply into debt. I will teach my children the importance of budgeting, saving, and practicing smart credit habits. They depend on you for guidance, and this is one area that is woefully ignored in our schools. Start by setting a good example. As they get older, let them gradually take on responsibility for making their own spending decisions. If I am over-obligated, I will seek professional credit counseling assistance. There's no shame in getting a little help from the experts when you're in over your head. And you'll be amazed at how much it reduces the stress in your life. For more information on how to p prepare your own financial spending plan contact you Command Financial Specialist or the Fleet and Family Support center at 624-4291.

Epiphany and the Legend of La Befana “L‘Epifania, tutte le feste porta via!” or the Epiphany takes away all of the holidays. As this Italian saying tells, yesterday’s (Jan. 6th) vacanza (holiday) marked the “official end” of the Christmas season. On that day, Italian children are very excited because they know that old lady Befana will visit their home leaving something for them under the Christmas tree. But who is this mysterious old lady who is often associated with the last holiday of the Italian Christmas season? Befana is the “Italian version” of Santa Claus, a good witch with a hooked nose. Kids imagine her riding a broom and secretly sneaking into their homes carrying over her shoulders a sack full of presents. The day before the Epiphany, they prepare the stockings and try to behave so that they can get candies. The name Befana comes from “Epiphany,” the holiday celebrated on Jan 6. Christians commemorate the visit of the three Wise Men to infant Jesus, with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The word Epiphany comes from ancient Greek and means “manifestation (or “appearance”) of a supernatural being or of a divinity.” For the Christian tradition it is “a moment of revelation” of newborn Jesus to the world. Although Befana is basically a popular tradition it is somehow tied to the Christian heritage. According to legend, on their journey to Bethlehem, the Tre Re Magi or Three Wise Men stopped an old woman and asked her for directions to visit the
Christ child. They also invited her to go with them to see Him. Since she didn’t know about the new baby, she grumpily sent the men away telling them she had too much housework to do. Later, as she realized who the baby was, she felt guilty for sending the men away and therefore she went looking for them, but she was unsuccessful. For this reason, tradition holds that every year during the night between Jan 5th and the 6th she wonders around flying on her broom carrying a bag full of all the gifts for the good children, those presents that she couldn’t deliver to infant Jesus. The tradition also says that La Befana knows how the kids behave so they have to watch their manners as the festival nears otherwise instead of finding toys and candy they will only get “coal” or carbone, this actually consist of black rock candies resembling pieces of coal. Sometimes parents to make a joke to their misbehaving kids so they can fill up the stocking with “coal” and then right after the child sees the coal the parents then give them the gifts.

Italy bans plastic shopping bags By ANSA Rome – Italy has moved ahead with plans to ban the production and distribution of non-biodegradable plastic shopping bags its environment minister recently told ANSA. "There is no going back", said Stefania Prestigiacomo, stressing that "producers had enough time to prepare themselves for this change". The government's plans to ban plastic bags, first drawn up in 2007, originally foresaw an end to their use starting from January 2010 before a one-year extension was granted. A campaign is being planned to inform citizens about the ban and about environmentally friendly alternatives, said Prestigiacomo. The environment minister is certain that the ban will have a positive effect. "Sustainability is made of little changes to our lifestyle that doesn’t cost us anything and can save the
planet." Italians use a total of 20 billion plastic shopping bags every year. According to researchers, plastic bags remain in the environment for a minimum of 15 years to a maximum of 1,000 years, polluting the air, the sea, rivers and forests. A recent poll suggested that Italians are ready to do their bit, with 73% saying they would use alternatives to polluting plastic bags when out shopping. These include biodegradable shopping bags and carrying bags made of natural fabric such as cotton, hemp and other materials. Unionplast, an association that includes firms in the plastic production sector, criticized the imminent implementation of the ban, arguing that the European Union didn't have specific guidelines prohibiting plastic shopping bags. According to the association, plastic bags are not a threat to the environment because
they can be recycled. Unionplast also pointed out that alternative; biodegradable shopping bags break more easily as they are not as resistant as plastic, and also cost three times as much. However, leading Italian environmental organization Legambiente praised the government's plans and echoed Minister Prestigiacomo's comments by reminding producers that the starting date for the ban had been announced well in advance, giving them enough time to plan ahead. The government's intention to implement the ban without further delays is of crucial importance, said a member of Legambiente's scientific team. Meanwhile, the industry ministry is drawing up temporary measures to allow supermarkets and shops to get rid of their plastic bag supplies.

Stella Winter sales season kicks off in Sicily Montessori
It’s again sconti (sales) time in Sicily! Here is your chance to strike good bargains while shopping in the local economy. The stagione degli sconti or discount season will officially last until Jan. 31. While you’re in search of big bargains, make sure you keep in mind some tips that Italian Consumer Associations have suggested to avoid rip-offs and disputes with merchants that would be difficult to handle without an Italian interpreter next to you. According to Italian Consumer Associations officials, some unfair retailers might try to sell shopworn or damaged items as “promotional sales” just to reduce the quantity of merchandise in stock. Here are some rules of thumb. First of all, when you see discounts higher than 50 per cent from the ini-
Old Wild West
tial price ask yourself if you are really getting the value for the money you are about to spend. A “sensational” 80 or 90 per cent discount might sound like a tempting offer but could also be a rip-off. Remember that, during the discount season, defective merchandise could be exchanged or returned as usual. There is no “special return policy” when you shop at sales. Therefore, always keep your scontrino or receipt and distrust the shops displaying signs saying: “la merce venduta non si cambia,” (purchased merchandise cannot be exchanged or all sales are final). You have the right to change any defective fabric or shoe that is not up to sample within two months. Retailers can either refund you or give you a coupon that should be spent in the same shop. Be sure to look an item over
Stampa
carefully before you buy it. Check different shops to compare prices. If you have already visited a store you might be able to evaluate if a product was over-priced and then marked down. Stores must display on the tags the initial prezzo (price) and the reduced price, both in ciphers and in percentage. Eventually, remember that you can use any way of payment. Mistrust shop owners who display signs saying “non si accettano carte di credito e bancomat” (credit cards and ATM cards are not accepted) during the sales season. That’s illegal. If you don’t see any signs around, and the sales clerk tells you about it upon paying, tell them you know they must accept your credit card. If they don’t, and you are not willing to pay cash, leave the shop and look for your best deals somewhere else!

By Tracie Barnthouse The Signature Editor My all-time favorite pasta is pasta alla norma. Eggplant, pasta, tomato sauce, cheese? Yes, please. So, when I heard that the recipe at this month’s FFSC cooking class was going to be parmigiana (or my very loose translation: pasta alla norma, but put together like lasagna with without the pasta), I was in! And, since we were feeling extra gluttonous, we decided to make a spinach ricotta ravioli dish and an orange salad, too! It was an ideal vegetarian meal… until they served the ravioli with a ham cream sauce. You can’t win ‘em all, right? Onto the recipes! For the parmagiana, you’ll need slices of eggplant that have been fried in vegetable oil. They need to be mushy, but not falling apart, and the oil needs to be blotted off of the slices before you work with them. You’ll also need tomato sauce (make your own or buy it in a jar, whichever works for you, and I totally won’t judge), either Parmesan or Pecorino
Pietro
cheese, grated, and an egg. Pretty simple ingredients. Assembly time. We made our meal in a small aluminum pan, but if you’re making this at home for family or friends, I recommend using a 9x12 casserole dish. Take a little bit of the tomato sauce and cover the bottom of the pan with it. Next, put down some of the slices of eggplant, so they are in one single layer, covering the bottom of the pan. Next, plop some tomato sauce on top of the eggplant, making sure the eggplant is thinly coated with sauce. Next, sprinkle with cheese. Repeat the process as many times as you’d like. The consensus was that four layers is perfecto, but you can either take that advice or toss it. After everything is assembled, crack an egg into a bowl and whisk it with some tomato sauce and cheese. (If you’re making this for a family, I would do probably three or four eggs, and maybe a ½ cup to 1 cup of sauce.) Pour it over the assembled eggplants. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius (or 350 degrees Fahrenheit)
for 10-15 minutes. Next, ravioli. The chef of the agriturismo we went to gave us a demonstration on how to make the egg pasta, and it’s really simple: take about 250 grams (about 1 cup) of grano duro flour (semolina) and two eggs and knead it all together. That’s it. If you make this pasta at home, know that it must be used within a couple of days, because of the egg in the dough. It also can’t be frozen, so eat up! You can also buy sheets of pasta at stores like Auchan. I’ve found them in the refrigerated section, by the butter and cheese. You might call that taking the easy way out. I call it efficient. Alright, so no matter how you get your pasta, it needs to be cut into circles. You can use a biscuit cutter, the bottom of a jar of soup, your crafty scissor loving child (though not recommended), or another method, but you need circles of dough. After you cut the dough to shape, set it aside. Now, mix together some spinach (feel free to boil your own spinach, but I would definitely
Milici
use the boxed stuff for this.), a hunk of fresh ricotta cheese, and a couple spoonfuls of Parmesan cheese. Mix the whole thing together and dollop a little bit into the middle of each pasta circle. Andrea Carobene, the FFSC’s wonderful and fearless Intercultural Relations leader told us ½ teaspoon of filling for each circle, but I would recommend a bit more, maybe even a tablespoon. Don’t tell. Now, fold each pasta circle in half, and press the ends together. You need to make sure it’s sealed really well, or else the filling will come out while it’s boiling in the water. No bueno. After pressing the ends together, take a fork and seal the whole thing. To cook, put in a pot of salted water and cook for only a few minutes, just so everything has a chance to get warm. For a topping, tomato sauce, sagebutter, or what they served for lunch, a ham cream sauce goes well; just make sure it’s not too strong that it will
overpower the spinach filling. Our final recipe was an orange salad, which is fitting because oranges are in season right now (though the popular blood oranges aren’t ready until March, contrary to what you may see or hear). This recipe sounds so strange, and trust me, I had my doubts, but it’s actually very delicious. Dice up an orange, drizzle some olive oil on top, and then some sliced onion, salt, and a little red pepper flakes. Mix the whole thing together. That’s it! The next cooking class is at the end of January. Check it out! It’s tons of fun and we usually go to a different part of the island, so you get to see what life is like in rural Sicily. Go Green Sigonella! Are You Doing Your Part? 10 Easy Tips To Go Green 1. Don't get bottled water - Instead of bottled water get a reusable container to carry water. Also you can get a filter to make your home tap taste more like bottled water. It is definitely more cost efficient. 2. Hang Outside to Dry - Get a cloths line or rack to dry your cloths. Your cloths will last longer and you will save money.

3. Use Both Sides of Paper - If you have a printer with a double sided print option use it. You will save half of the amount of paper you would have normally used.
10
4. Turn the water off when you brush - Your parents have said this before, now I say it. You will save 4 gallons of water doing this alone.
5. Turn off your lights - An easy one. Turn off your lights when you are not using them. The benefits are obvious. 6. Buy Rechargeable Batteries - Even though it will take a good investment to buy these you will find yourself gaining it back in no time.
11

7. Get a reusable bag - You can't recycle plas-
tic bags, instead get yourself a reusable bag so that you won't have to worry about carrying your necessities.
8.Do Errands in Bulk - Make a list of the things
13
you have to do, and see if you can fit a couple of those things together in one ride.
9. Wrap Presents Creatively - Without going out to get wrapping paper you can use newspaper, an old map, or anything else. It would look a whole lot more creative.
14
10. Maintain your automobile(s) - Check
your tire pressure and keep pressure at the manufacturer’s recommended level. Low tire pressure uses more fuel. Maintain a clean air filter. Clean air filters use less fuel. Remove unnecessary items from your truck. Heavier vehicles use more fuel.

SANTA, continued from page 1 canned goods, old clothes, games, baby items, and other various donations, including bicycles that members of SCOPA found and fixed up. As the event loomed closer, those who had volunteered to buy presents for the children received an age, gender, and wish list from a child. “Honestly, I didn’t think I would even get into the spirit of the holidays, since I am in Italy. When I started looking for gifts on the wish list, it hit me. This is what Christmas is really about - giving back to the community,” said Airman Toby Cook, one of the volunteers, on how it felt to be a part of a Christmas for the youth of Italy. At last, the day arrived. The AIMD SCPOA had an enormous amount of homemade goods for the event. As soon as one dish disappeared, a new one replaced it. As the volunteers were serving food to the children, there were smiles all around. Just when the children were finishing their meals, Santa Claus appeared right in front of their eyes and began to pass out gifts. The kids rushed around to see what Saint Nick brought for them and for their friends. As names were called out and each child went up to see what gift they had received for Christmas, it became apparent that the SCPOA had outdone themselves as they had more gifts than there were children present. “It is always fulfilling to see a plan go well, especially as well as this event went,” said President of the SCPOA, Second Class Petty Officer Aviation Support Equipment Technician Stephen Chvala. “The children were full of good food, and left with their arms full. It really puts the holidays into a new perspective. I don’t know who enjoyed themselves more, us or the kids.”

January 7, 2011 Page 13 TIME, continued from page 2 money, political action, or family activities, we find the time for putting first those things that matter most to us…Time talks.” Time really talks; it exposes our genuine priorities in this life. White continues, “Time, then, is a definite representation of our priorities. We reveal what we value most by how we allocate this limited resource.” This is important if you are single, married, or parents. We all have significant relationships that need time, our time. Dr. Gary Chapman, author of the book entitled, The Five Love Languages, writes, “A central aspect of quality time is togetherness. I do not mean proximity…Togetherness has to do with focused attention.” I’ve been involved in pastoral counseling for 15 years (again where does the time go?), and quality time is an important ingredient for all relationships. Let’s face it; we live in a hyper-culture that places tremendous value on “business.” Doesn’t really matter what you do with your time, as long as you’re busy. Let’s fight this cultural tendency and focus our undivided attention on spending quality time with the people whom mean the most to us. We cannot see it. We cannot smell it. We cannot touch it. However, we can control how we allocate our time with others. Don’t waste another day! This is a new year! Let’s carefully choose how will use this “limited resource” we call time. Happy New Year!

Remember that firewalls and network restrictions are designed to block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications—therefore, think twice, think OPSEC. This is more than just a test of the firewall setup on the ONENET. Across the board, the CCRI inspection can be one of the most thorough inspections that NASSIG will undergo. When it comes to your personal obligation to security, consider taking extra precautions. Simply removing your
Common Access Card (CAC) may not be enough. Consider logging off at the end of your workday minimizing the opportunity of your workstation being compromised. As with all inspections, preparation is key. Conduct a selfassessment. Ask yourself if you are doing everything you can to keep your workspace secure and materials out of the wrong hands. Do your part to protect your workspace and shop. If you have questions, ask your Command Security Specialist. They can provide you with information to keep you, your accounts, information and workspace protected.
LDOs are selected from E-6 to E-9 with eight to 16 years of service. Because they are more technically centered than LDOs, CWOs are only selected from E-7s and above with 12 to 22 years of service. Selection boards for both LDO and CWOs are held in January. "I think most people, when first hearing of this review, thought that it was all doom and gloom," said Jones. "But the reality is that it's a necessary evolution that will leave us stronger." "A big problem we had in the past is that we select the numbers we need by designator to keep a balanced entry into each technical field," said Jones. "Later on, we promote with everyone in one large pot and some designators with less sea duty are disadvantaged. We are evaluating a move toward promotion by designator to ensure we get the right balance at the senior level as well – this fits in well with the initiative to keep the communities
viable and sustainable." "The future is bright for the LDO/CWO community," said Jones. "This very necessary review, the largest since our collective inception in 1948, is long overdue. Most encouraging is the consistent overwhelming support from senior Navy leadership who highly value this community of seasoned technical leadership."
