Fire safety in your home Article by Sandra Basile NAS Sigonella Fire Department Children playing with fire: Little kids often play with fire because they're curious and they don't understand how much damage fire can do. Older kids also might be tempted to touch a lit candle or light something on fire, just to see what will happen. Kids who play with fire can end up burning themselves, hurting other people, and destroying important things, like homes and woods. Fires set by children: Fire-play by children has killed ap-

proximately 113 people and injured 916 more every year. Preschoolers and kindergartners are most likely to start these fires, typically by playing with matches and lighters, and are most likely to die in them. Children as young as two years old have set lethal blazes. The University of Colorado's Children's Hospital reports that 78 percent of children treated for burns were injured in a fire set by themselves or another child, and children set 45 percent of the fires that resulted in their death or another child's death. Warning signs: Look

for signs such as children excessively fueling fires to create dangerously large blazes and/or children hiding matches and lighters. Theses signs may indicate that a child is in danger of becoming a juvenile fire setter. These children may intentionally set fires as an act of defiance or as a distressed reaction to a traumatic event such as their parents' divorce or a death in the family. Facts & figures: • In 2008, children playing with fire started an estimated 53,500 fires that were reported to U.S. fire

DirecT LiNe I’ve been receiving so many questions that some I couldn’t get to all of them during the January Feedback Live, so I wanted to use this Direct Line to get to the remaining two questions. As a reminder, Feedback Live is held on the first Thursday of each month, from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. To call in live on the show, please dial 624-4265 or 095-564265, or send it live via Facebook. No matter how you choose to do so, please keep sending your questions! Q1. My husband's a contractor here has nearly 38 years experience in his job. In the 6 yrs we've been here, I have yet to get a job since the jobs are reserved for Active Duty or have a no-fee passport. Contractors come over on tourist passports with "Mission" visas which are renewed. We also need dependent entry approval. I have a Masters in Library Science - HRO won't accept my applications for the library tech position since I do not have a no-fee passport. Environmental Management System What you need to know! Article by Justin Lancaster, PE

NAS Sigonella Public Works Department Enviornmental Division Director

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a proactive program for managing installation activities to minimize impact to the environment. The first step of developing an EMS is to establish an environmental policy. Naval Air Station Sigonella’s (NASSIG) Environmental Policy Statement is the foundation of the EMS and reflects our commitment to integrate mission accomplishment with environmental stewardship. This policy statement is communicated through the acronym, “CARE”, which summarizes the key concepts: C – Comply with rules A – Always improve R – Reduce waste E – Eliminate pollution The second step of developing an EMS is identifying environmental aspects and determining which ones can cause the most significant impacts to the environment. An aspect could be energy usage, or a specific waste stream from one operation. The most significant aspects require procedures to define how their impact to the environment can be controlled or minimiCommanding Officer Capt. Scott Butler Public Affairs Officer Lt. zed. At NASSIG, our significant environmental aspects are hazardous material spills, storm water discharges, and drinking water. What is your role? All personnel working for or on behalf of NASSIG have roles and responsibilities regarding the EMS. Each employee must know what NASSIG’s environmental policy is and how it relates to their job. All personnel must know and comply with the environmental procedures that apply to their job. Additionally, all personnel should know what significant environmental aspects are related to their job duties and what to do in the event of an environmental emergency. To learn more about NASSIG’s EMS, you can contact the EMS Coordinator, Antonella Grillo, at DSN 624-6931 or the Environmental Director, Justin Lancaster, at 624-2725. 3. A sojourn permit endorsed for "Missione - componente civile e/o componente civile." Q2. Why is it that for as much money that we spend on internet and phone in housing they both still seem to have horrible performance. Internet cuts out daily and the phone always seem to have static in the lines? A2. We have had problems during the upgrade to 20 Mbps ADSL service (approx. June 2009-June 2010) as with any major undertaking. We have overcome the problems and the ADSL system is stable. Until the month of November 2010, with a record peak of 58 trouble calls in one day of which over 50% of these trouble calls were unstable power at Marinai. The BCO with Telecom Italia have a solution for the unstable power. Telecom Italia has uploaded new firmware to the modems that holds the configuration after a power loss. So, once the power comes back the modem will connect you back to the internet. Since October we have been keeping statistics for ADSL trouble calls.

The record shows an average of 3 trouble calls per day, total of 64 out of 950 clients = 6% in October. November we had an average of 7 trouble calls per day, total of 206 out of 950 clients = 22%. December we had an average of 0.5 trouble calls per day, total of 16 out of 950 clients = 2%. The cost of the ADSL provided by Telecom Italia is for a commercial grade internet connection providing up to 20 Mbps to the communication building and a 300 Mbps bandwidth to the internet with a minimum bandwidth guaranteed. That’s what is being delivered for your dollars. The price of the telephone service is dictated by the Navy comptroller for all OCONUS Navy BCOs. During the Marinai flood in December 2005, most of the houses suffered water damage in the walls and electrical conduits. Once a home’s phone line has been identified to have been water damaged it gets replaced. The BCO and Telecom Italia are here to ensure a satisfied customer. Within the season, hundreds of people could find out via Facebook if their package had successfully made it into town. Additionally, the NAS1 Post Office and FMC remained open throughout the holiday manning the phone for personnel to call directly to inquire about last minute mail availability. As we wind down from what I am calling a successful holiday mail season we thought it appropriate to get the New Year off on the right foot by publishing those frequently asked questions that we inevitably receive throughout the year. Q1. Why does the Post Office close on unscheduled days for audits? A. It is required according to DOD regulations that the Postal Finance offices be audited once a month at times that are not predetermined to the of-

fice. The NASSIG Command Evaluation Team has the authorization to close our offices to conduct this audit. The process takes about two hours to complete. At that time customer service can resume. Q2. How do I file an Insurance claim? A. In brief, claims can be filed online, by mail, or in person at the Post Office by either the Mailer or Addressee for insured articles that are damaged or missing. It is required to retain the damaged article and container (including packaging, wrapping, and any other contents received) until the claim is fully resolved. The “Mad Foxes” of VP-5 arrive at NAS Sigonella By Lt. j.g. Jason Riner VP-5 PAO Odds are you’ve noticed some new faces around NAS Sigonella lately. Patrol Squadron Five recently relieved Patrol Squadron Sixteen as the P3 presence both here and abroad. The squadron is currently conducting operations in three worldwide locations: Operation Active Endeavor in the Sixth Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR); anti-piracy operations in and around the Horn of Africa, and drug interdiction missions in the Forth Fleet AOR. Of the nearly 400 sailors and officers in VP-5, over 100 deployed here to Sigonella, and have worked hard over the past month in order to maintain the high standards set while training at home in Jacksonville, Florida. In preparation to simultaneously operate in three AORs, the “Mad Foxes” completed a demanding eighteen month inter-deployment readiness cycle that involved a number of exercises spread all over the world. These included supporting COMPTUEX for Commander Amphibious Ready Group 8, Operation Joint Warrior, and the Rim of the Pacific Exercise in the Hawaiian Islands. The squadron also assisted recovery personnel during Haiti relief operations by flying in support of Operation Unified Response. Overall, the Mad Foxes safely executed 4409 flight hours during their home cycle. Patrol Squadron Five also completed an in depth and demanding Operational Readiness Evaluation designed to prove that the squadron could meet all of the unique challenges that it will face as it operates from three different deployment sites. The squadron concluded this complex evolution with flying colors, earning a total of 42 crew qualifications ranging from anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare to reconnaissance data collection. This 100% mission completion rate could not have been attained without the unwavering effort of the entire Mad Fox team. While deployment presents a significant challenge to any military member, it can also be tremendously rewarding. The opportunity to travel the

world and strengthen our relationships abroad has not been overlooked. AWO2 Nettles, a non-acoustic sensor operator, is excited to “experience the food, culture, and sightseeing Sicily has to offer”. Pilot Lt. j.g. Rohde looks forward to, “putting his training to use and participa-

The Super Bowl teams are set, and with this lull in the football action as everyone gears up for The Big Game, we thought we’d put the panelists to the test, predicting the Pro Bowl, Rookie of the Year, and the Regular Season MVP. Also, this isn’t a runaway win by Glasser. The Super Bowl game will carry more weight (1 point for correctly picking the winner, 3 points for predicting the spread, and 5 points for picking the Super Bowl MVP), so Vazana even has a fighting chance! Let’s get to it! Clifton: Rookie of the Year: Sam Bradford. He led the Rams to a 7-9 record which is not bad considering the Seahawks made the playoffs with the same record. NFL Regular Season MVP: Tom Brady - 36 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and a QB rating of 111, which is insane. Beadles: Ah, All Star game... hate ‘em - no one cares (especially the players). Lived in the land of Aloha for 3 years and they were ALWAYS givin’ tickets away to this game... that being said, NFC! Pro Bowl: AFC vs. NFC ROY: Two rea- Rookie of the Year sons for Regular season MVP Ndamukong Suh: 1) easily the most confusing name of the group (someone

please tell me he goes by “Kong”) 2) best slogan - “No duh - vote for Suh” MVP: Tom Brady’s hair. Glasser: Pro Bowl: I am an AFC guy, so I’m stickin’ with my team. I am glad to see the game moved back to Honolulu. What batter way to take a little R-N-R after a long season. This game will truly be a sleeper, aloha! ROY: Good thing I am typing his name and not trying to pronouce it... Ndamukong Suh is a STUD! He is listed a 6’-4”, 307lbs... but you know he is probably bigger than that. Finally, a first round draft pick lives up to the hype! He will make the Detroit Lions almost competitive in years to come. Suh wins in a landslide! MVP: I think they should include the post season in the voting. Aaron Rodgers has truly made a statement in the last few weeks of the season and in the playoffs. Or better yet, Clay Matthews,

Packers aren’t where they are without him. Hard to go with Vick, he sat out the first four games and the Eagles still won, plus they got plucked in the first round. But, since that’s just the way it is... as seen last year, the Patriots are nothing without Pretty-Boy Brady, he gets my vote. Vazana: I can’t explain how the most knowledgable football fan out of the bunch ends up in last place; it baffles my mind. Everybody has got to get lucky once in awhile, and it was all of your turns to get lucky. AFC: QBs are much more dominante in the AFC, and that’s who wins ball games. Plus, take the defensive players from the Ravens, Jets and Steelers and you have one nasty squad. Either way, the players don’t even play hard for the Pro Bowl, so I put this game on the tad boring side. ROY: Definitely Sam Bradford. Much harder for a WB to play well in his rookie season than any other position. Over 3500 yrds and 18 TDs throwing balls

to unknown receivers and taking a 1-15 team in 2009 to an almost playoff appearance and respectable 7-9 record is some feat. Hands down he takes it, or at least should. Regular season MVP: MVP honors should 100% go to Aaron Rodgers for his performance so far in the playoffs, but too bad it won’t, as his team was a 6th seed entering the wild card game. Out of the next tier choices, my pick would go to Tom Brady. His record for most completions wihtout an interception and leading his team to the best record in the NFL will certainly seal the deal for him. Vick is great and the dude has moved many notches on my totem poll, but he is still no Brady.

Empower. Enrich. EDUCATE. What Parents Should Know About Social Networking

Days Inn

Dr, Riccardo Milici

Article by Military OneSource Social networking Web sites are rapidly becoming some of the mostpopular online destinations for children and teenagers. These sites are designed to connect people for friendship and fun, and, for many teenagers, they’re one of their main forms of socialization. But some dangers are associated with social networking sites. In this article, you’ll find information about how these online communities work and what you can do to help your child use them safely. What are social networking Web sites? Social networking Web sites are online communities in which users create and share personal profiles or “pages;” exchange messages; join groups of like-minded people; and share music, videos, and photos. New social networking sites are constantly popping up, but some of the most popular ones include • MySpace • Facebook • Friendster • Xanga • Orkut Most social networking sites have clearly stated age limits. For example, users must be 14 or older to sign up for a MySpace page, but these age limits are nearly impossible to verify because there is no mechanism for checking how old users actually are. Though different social networking sites have different features, the building block of social networking sites is the profile, or personal page, which typically includes information such as the user’s name, hometown, school, likes and dislikes, interests, music, photos, videos, blog (Web journal), and more. Once a profile is established, users can find friends who share their interests and invite them to connect to their profile, or, as some sites refer to this process of connecting, to “be their friend.” Then, all of the people in your friends’ networks then become part of your network, and you

continue to build and maintain a network of friends and connections. What is my child doing on social networking sites? Despite many parents’ fears about their children communicating with strangers online, for the most part, teenagers use social networking sites to communicate with their friends from school or their community. In fact, a recent magazine article about social networking sites referred to them as “the digital equivalent to hanging out at the mall.” But social networking sites offer much more than just the ability to communicate with friends. They also help users connect with networks of like-minded people, whether it’s people who live in your same town, go to the same high school, like the same movies or books, or care about the same issues. In fact, some of the most popular groups on Facebook, for example, are designed to raise awareness about social, political, or environmental issues. And they offer entertainment, too, including fully produced television shows (MySpace has one aimed specifically at Gen X users), videos posted by users, blogs that you can subscribe to, photo albums you can browse, and more. Why do teenagers like these sites? Many parents have trouble understanding why teenagers prefer to communicate online when they can simply call their friends on the phone or talk to them in person. It’s important to understand that for many teenagers, Facebook, MySpace, and other networking sites have become their main form of social connection. They use these sites to communicate with their friends, to make plans, find out what’s going on, and stay in touch. They use these sites more than they do the phone, even cell phones. Experts say that increasingly, kids don’t make the same distinctions between online and real-world social interaction that adults make. The social interactions they have and the friends they make online are just as real to them as face-to-face conversations and friends they see everyday.

There are many unique features about social networking sites that teenagers find especially appealing, such as: • The ability to find people with whom they have things in common. a shared interest. • Social networks build incredibly quickly on these sites. • Users can experiment with their identity and public persona by creating highly personalized profiles complete with music, photos, their favorite quotes, television shows, movies, and more. • These sites have developed popular applications that let users do everything from sending virtual hugs or flowers, to playing online games, to starting a virtual aquarium in which friends can add new fish. • Many sites, particularly MySpace, have become full-fledged media outlets where members can watch videos, listen to music, get news, play games, and otherwise be entertained. But perhaps most importantly, social networking sites provide teenagers with a space of their own that’s mostly free from the interference or supervision of adults. What are the dangers associated with social networking sites? There are some very real dangers associated with social networking Web sites. These include the following: • Stalkers and pedophiles: The Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported more than 2,600 incidents of adults using the Web to target children online in order to engage in sexual activity. When you consider the millions of children who use the Internet every day, this number is not that large. But it is still a real danger, and children and parents need to know how to stay safe on social networking sites. • Cyberbullying. The Internet can be just as bad for bullying and social cruelty as a school hallway between classes, sometimes even worse, because the lack of face-to- face contact

huge candles that devotees carry on their shoulders while they perform the processions. Every year, Catania wax shops sell hundreds of ceri (tall wax candles). Devotees carry those bulky candles per grazia ricevuta, which means that a Saint has granted them a miracle they have been asking for. The miracle could be invoked for a pregnancy that is in serious danger or if someone is suffering from an incurable disease or yet after one has survived a traffic accident. Usually, it is up to the devotee to decide how heavy the candle should be and for how long they would carry it. According to Catania wax dealers, the most requested candle is the one that weighs approximately 85 pounds. But some also request candles that can weigh up to 350 pounds. Carrying ceri in procession is usually a lifelong practice. If one devotee is too old or sick to carry a heavy candle, another person such as a son or a relative could continue to participate in the procession instead of them. Life of Sant’Agata According to tradition, Agata came from a rich family. Her virtues and her beauty drew the attention of Quintianus, a local Roman governor who actively and brutally persecuted Christians. Agata, who already consecrated her-

self to God, refused his advances. Therefore, Quintianus decided to punish her by having her locked up in a brothel where Aphrodisia, a wicked woman tried to corrupt Agata’s virtue and faith by playing wiles and stratagems. But Agata never wavered and resisted to all her attempts. Therefore, Quintianus, miffed by Agata’s firmness, had her underwent terrible tortures such as cutting off her breast. This detail was often depicted in the Christian medieval paintings as a peculiar characteristic of Saint Agata. Tradition also tells about prodigious events that occurred while Agata was in prison such as the apparition of St. Peter who comforted and healed all her wounds. Eventually, after repeated tortures Quintianus had Agata condemned to the stake. But while she was burning alive a violent earthquake struck Catania. This natural disaster was welcomed by the Catanians as a sign of God who wanted the tortures inflicted to Agata to be over. Thus, a riot broke out in the city forcing Quintianus to stop the infamous execution. Agata was then brought back to her prison where she died right after. It was Feb. 5, 251 AD. Later on the same day, the evil Quintianus, who was fleeing because he feared the riot, drowned in

Castelbuono By Tracie Barnthouse The Signature Editor

I love road trips. Nothing but you and your adventurous companion, great tunes cranked up, varying landscapes, and miles upon miles of open road are just some of the plusses about getting out and exploring. An added bonus is when you get to sit on a comfortable bus and let the fine folks of Information, Travel & Tours (ITT) take the reigns. Here in Sicily, we are fortunate to have many small towns that just beckon to be discovered. One of those towns is Castelbuono, or as its original name, Castello del buon aere, or "Castle of good air," located in the province of Palermo, about three hours away from base. The people of Castelbuono successfully lob-

bied the Italian government to make their city an exit point from the new Palermo-Messina highway. Because of their successful persuading, Castelbuono has seen an influx of people coming to their town to see their famed castle, eat their unique 'manna,' which is the sweet sap from a specific tree, and roam their cute, store-lined streets. Site: 5 stars Driving into Castelbuono, you feel like you're completely out of Sicily. The landscape is rolling, reminiscent of Tuscany, with little farms dotting the mountainside. As the road twists and turns, you get a great view of the various crops that line the town's borders. This time of the year, almonds are in season, and the white flowers of the blooming almond trees line the

road. Reaching the city is quite easy, and it is recommended to find parking outside the town. It's easy: there are plenty of blue-marked 'P' signs that direct you to parking. Don't worry about parking too far away; Castelbuono is a little town that's very walk able. Despite its size, there is plenty to do in the town. The Ventimiglia castle sits on a little hill called Saint Peter, but is an ominous, towering structure. Once you step inside, you are in what was the original courtyard of the castle. The castle has been transformed into a civic museum and art dots the walls inside the building. For an entrance fee of 1.50 euro, you can roam the castles grounds, view modern art and get a glimpse of the breathtaking Palatine Chapel, whose claim to fame

One of the main attractions in Castelbuono is the castle of the Ventimiglia family. The castle has been turned into a civic museum and houses a number of modern art works. It also is home to a Palatine Chapel which is decorated in stucco figurines.

Alphio’s Garden

Castelbuono is small and compact, making it ideal to walk around. Everything is simple to find and the town is very easy to navigate. If you do happen to get a little lost, there are maps all over the place to guide you to where you want to go. is that it holds the skull of Saint Anne, the mother of Mary. The chapel is stunning. The walls are full of statues made of stucco and it's truly a site to be seen. In addition to the chapel, the castle grounds feature a cylindrical tower that is said to date back to the year 1316. Once outside the castle, walk toward the town center, where you will find shops, restaurants and cafes. One of the more popular shops is one that sells candy made of manna, which comes from the sap of a certain tree. Manna is said to have therapeutic benefits, from a weight loss aid to serving as a sugar-free sweetener for diabetics. The people of Castelbuono use manna to sweeten bread, almond nougat candy and other delicious dishes. You'll find that the candy shop owners will be more than happy to let you sample their candy and bread before purchasing. The nougat is highly recommended, as it comes in various flavors, from orange and lemon to dark and milk chocolate. It's delicious.

Another site not to miss in Castelbuono is the main Cathedral, the Chiesa Madre. The cathedral features detailed and ornate artwork on the altar, stone pillars and a gorgeous ceiling. It's also worth the 0.50 euro to see the underground crypt, which does not contain catacombs, but rather intricate paintings of the life of Jesus. The crypt dates back to the 15th century. The Chiesa Madre cathedral was originally consisted of two aisles. At the end of the 16th century, another aisle was added which preserves the prized works, including a painting of The Coronation of the Virgin that was broken into various pieces before being put together, a statue of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Betrothal of the Virgins. Family Friendly: 4 stars Kids who love candy and sweets will love Castelbuono. The nougat is delicious and will definitely cause a sugar rush, so keep that in mind before allowing your child to eat too much of it! Older kids will enjoy seeing the

JaNuary 28, 2011 castle and main cathedral, but those younger than six or seven may be a bit bored. The streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and it's not hard finding a place for lunch, but free space, such as parks is scarce. But don't let that deter you from exploring this quaint, cute town. As with everywhere you go in Sicily, it is what you make it, so creative and adventurous families are bound to have a good time. Accessibility: 3 stars The trip to Castelbuono is offered as an ITT trip, so getting there is a cinch. However, if you want to explore on your own, getting there is easy due to the new Palermo-Messina highway. Here's how you get there from NAS II. Take the SS417 toward Catania. Merge onto the A19 toward Palermo. Merge onto A20 toward Messina/Cefalu. Please note: This is a toll road, so be sure to have some

spare change with you. Take the exit toward Pollina/Castelbuono. Turn slightly right onto Galleria Serra Guarnieri (another short toll road). Turn slight right onto SS286. Turn slightly left onto Via Fonti di Camar/Largo Antonio Magavero Pila/SS286. Continue to follow Via Fonti di Camar/SS286. Parking is easy. Just look for the blue 'P' signs. Travel Time: 3 stars Because it takes anywhere from two to three hours to get there, Castelbuono rates two stars. However, it should be noted that the three hours goes by really fast, as the scenery will take your mind off of the drive. Just make sure the driver keeps his/her eyes on the road!

The view from a window in the Ventimiglia castle shows the homes nestled in the hills surrounding Castelbuono. The castle’s cylindrical tower dates back to the year 1316 and its Palantine Church is famous.

In the city, you can find plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes. One of the most popular things to try in the town is the almond nougat. The nougat is covered in white, dark, or milk chocolate and is delicious.

The Palatine Chapel, which is located inside the Ventimiglia castle features figurines made out of stucco. It also houses the skull of Saint Anne, the mother of Mary.

Castelbuono is a town nestled in the valley of hills. In the winter, you can see snow up on top of the hills, and the town takes on a ski town feeling.

One of the most popular treats to eat in Castelbuono is manna. It is naturally sweet sap that comes from the trees surrounding the town. The manna is known for being a weight loss aid and has been known to help for digestion.

FIRE, continued from page 1 departments, causing an estimated 70 civilian deaths, 910 civilian injuries and $279 million in direct property damage. • Most fire-play fires (77%) started outside, but most associated deaths (92%) were in home structure fires. • Almost half (47%) of people who start reported home fires by playing were five years old or younger. • Two out of five (41%) child-playing home structure fires began in the bedroom. • Mattresses and bedding were the items first ignited in 24% of child-playing home structure fires and 29% of associated civilian fire deaths Prevention: • Store matches and lighters out of children's reach and sight, up high, preferably in a locked cabinet. • Never use lighters or matches as a source of amusement for children; they may imitate you. • Talk to your children about the dangers of playing with matches. • If your child expresses curiosity about fire or has been playing with fire, calmly but firmly explain that matches and lighters are tools for adults only. It can happen in your home: This is a true concern for the community and a family in Sigonella has recently fallen victim to fire damage caused by fire-play. Every year the NASSIG Fire Prevention Division visits schools and stresses the importance of not playing with matches, lighters or candles. These lessons are only effective if they are revisited by parents through out the year. It is important to take some time to sit down with your children and explain the dangers of planning with these items and stress to them that these items are not toys. Parents should emphasize to their children that if they ever feel like they can't stop themselves from playing with fire, let a grownup know so he or she can help them.

POSTAL, continued from page 1 cel Post mail to get here? A. Also known as Surface mail, Parcel Post is trucked from its origin in the States to the Military Gateway in New Jersey, where it is put in a container. Once that container is full or reaches the hold time limit, it is sealed and loaded on to a ship where it sails to Naples. The FMC at Naples breaks down the container and puts the mail on a truck that takes the ferry to Sicily. The transit time for this process is 30 45 days, and up to 60. Q4. Why do I receive three months’ worth of magazines at the same time? A. This is not an uncommon occurrence as magazines; newspapers and Presorted Standard Mail follow the same route as our Parcel Post or Surface mail. Q5. I have items missing from a box I received, and it was not insured. Is there anything I can do? A. For all mail that is found to have been tampered with, or had items removed from them, we ask that you bring that piece of mail and contents to the Post Office so that we may file a mail loss and rifling report with the USPS. The Postal Inspection Service uses this information to build a profile and pinpoint troubled areas in the system. Customers are reminded to have items of particularly high value considered insurance. For items that are “one-of-a-kind,” or which have extremely high value, Registered Mail guarantees hand-to-hand delivery. As far as what you can do about the missing items, contact the company to see if they will ship a replacement for free or at a discount. Q6. Is there a physical address that I can use to receive FEDEX on base? A. No, all military and civilian personnel are required by DoD Instruction to utilize the provided FPO AE address. The physical address that has been circulated throughout the base is for official government use only and not to be used for personal mail. When shipping items from the states, customers are reminded to not include the country name in the address under any circumstances. Doing so will only create delays if your mail is processed through the Poste Italiane and will be subject to customs import fees. Receiving mail overseasespecially on an island, in the middle of the ocean- can be frustrating at times. Rest assured, mail delays are a major concern for us, and we are passionate about the mail. As we do everything we can in order to keep the mail moving in a timely manner, if you should ever have any questions you may contact any of our customer service professionals, or feel free to contact me directly at eugene.barto@eu.navy.mil or by phone 624-4520.

SOCIAL, continued from page 5 makes it easier to say and do things you wouldn’t normally say and do in a faceto-face situation. • Time wasting. Many teenagers check these sites multiple times a day. It’s not uncommon for them to log hours at a time on social networking sites. • Identity theft. Children and teenagers can just as easily become victims of identity theft as adults. Posting personal information online or befriending someone you don’t know can increase the chances that you’ll become a victim. • Making personal information available to anyone. Parents and children don’t always think about some of the less obvious consequences of posting personal information online. It’s not just that your child could become a victim of criminal activity, but it’s what happens when a future employer or an admissions officer at a college finds her page on MySpace and sees suggestive pictures. Or your son’s athletic coach reads a post about drinking that violates the contract your child signed when he became part of the team. Children and teenagers often lose sight of the fact that what they say and do online can have far-reaching consequences. Using social networking sites safely There are many things you can do to ensure that your child uses these networking sites safely. Here are some tips: • Learn how social networking sites work. Spend some time clicking around on your child’s favorite site. Look at profiles and posts and see what users are saying and doing. Most sites have a special section for parents -- look for a link at the bottom of the homepage under “terms of use” or “privacy.” This section should tell you how to report inappropriate activity or underage users. • Set firm guidelines or “house rules,” and consequences for not following them. Get your child involved by asking her to propose some guidelines, then work together to come up with a set of rules that’s agreeable to both of you. These will vary depending on your child’s age, but could include the following: - how much time your child is allowed to spend online - whom she talks to - what kind of photos and videos she can post - what information she can give out • Don’t allow your child to use social networking sites until he meets the sites’ age requirements. It’s also a good idea to take extra steps to protect younger children. Younger children will need to be monitored and coached much more carefully than older kids and teenagers, who may demand privacy in their online activities. Young children may not be able to make good decisions about the people they meet online, or they may inadvertently give out personal information. So be sure to talk about Internet safety regularly with your young child. Many experts recommend not allowing young children to have a computer in their bedrooms. Consider setting up the computer in a common area so you can keep an eye on what your child is doing. • Require your child to use the privacy settings that are available on the networking sites he uses. Make sure that his profile or page is set so that he has to permission to view it. You can find parent and child-friendly tutorials on this at GetNetWise.org, an online safety site for parents. Go to http://kids.getnetwise.org/safetyguide/technology/socialnetworking to find the tutorials. Also, most networking sites have a special section on privacy, which usually can be found by clicking on a link at the very bottom of the homepage. This link is often called “privacy.” Many sites also have sections designed specifically for parents, which typically can be found in the same area at the bottom of the homepage. • Regularly check profiles and posts.

Tell your child that you will be checking her profile regularly, and require that she allow you full access. Check to see who her online friends are and what they are talking about. Make sure that any pictures or videos your child has posted are appropriate and that she hasn’t made personal information available to the public. It’s common for kids, especially teenagers, to complain that their parents are invading their privacy when they read their online profiles. If your child protests, reassure her that you’re focused on safety, not checking up on her. • Talk about Internet safety. Have regular conversations with your child. Make sure your child understands the following basic safety guidelines: - Never post personal information or give it to anyone you meet online, including your full name or where you live. If someone asks for personal information -- a request that’s often put as ASL (age, sex, location) -- respond as vaguely as possible, such as “Male, under 18, North America.” - Ask friends not to post identifying information on your page. If they do, delete the comments immediately. - Never meet anyone in person that you only know online. - Don’t assume that someone you meet online is the person he or she seems to be. - Use a safe screen name that doesn’t include your name, e-mail address, or anything else that could identify you. Avoid provocative screen names, like cutegirl93, for example. • Remind your child that once she posts information online, she can’t take it back. Even if she deletes the information from a site, older versions may exist on other people’s computers and be circulated online. So, something your teenager posts today may still be viewable when she applies for her first job in a few years. One good rule of thumb that’s listed by social networking site Xanga: Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want your parents, your principal, or a predator to see. • Know how your child is getting online. More and more, teenagers are accessing the Internet through their cell phones. Find out about what limits you can place

on your child’s cell phone. Some providers have plans that limit downloads, Internet access, and texting; other plans allow parents to limit access to these features during certain times of day. • Talk to your child about cyberbullying. Online bullying can take many forms, from spreading rumors online and posting or forwarding private messages without the sender’s OK, to sending threatening messages. Tell your child that the words he types and the images he posts can have real-world consequences. They can make the target of the bullying feel bad, make the sender look bad, and, sometimes, can bring on punishment from the authorities. Encourage your child to talk to you if he feels targeted by a bully. • Tell your child to trust her instincts. If something makes her feel uncomfortable or threatened, she should tell you right away. Then you can report the activity to the social networking site (most sites have a link to let users report inappropriate online behavior) or to the police if necessary. Networking sites are an important part of many teenagers’ social worlds. When they are used carefully and appropriately, they can provide a valuable creative outlet and connection to others. By setting clear limits and guidelines about how to use social networking sites, you can make sure that your child is able to get the benefits of these online communities while still staying safe. It was a quadruple double for the Sigonella High School basketball teams last weekend as both the men and lady Jaguars tipped off for games on Friday night and then again the next morning against Aviano High School Saints at Sigonella High School Gymnasium. In preparations for next month’s European Division III title game in Mannheim, Germany, Sigonella’s boys’ team stormed out of the opening tip in Friday night’s game scoring the first ten points of the game. The Sigonella momentum continued to roll throughout the game, and slashed through the Aviano defense on their way to 45-35 half-time lead. Head coach, Chief James McKissick was very

pleased with his team’s performance, and said he was very happy with the half-court defense and ball movement on the offensive end. “We took it right to them from the start. Our guard play was sensational and

third quarter, then completing the comeback by outscoring the Saints by nine in the fourth quarter to win a 59-56 classic game. “We kept our composure and didn’t give up even though we trailed by 12 points

The Jaguars didn’t let up after half-time, holding the Saints to just seven points in the third quarter, before exploding for 26 points to put the game out of reach in the fourth, winning by a final of 80-68. The Jaguars were in the lead the entire game and dominated almost every statistical category. Led by All-Europe guard Larry Stevenson with 27 points, the Jaguars hit the pedal from the beginning and never slowed down. Saturday’s game was closer, as the tables were turned in the first half when Aviano scored 16 points in the second quarter while holding the Jaguars to only five points and zero field goals. After adjustments were made during half-time by McKissick and assistant head coach, Chief Larry Stevenson, the Jaguars began playing like they did the night before, pulling within four points at the end of the

at one point,” McKissick said. “The crowd motivated us all game long and didn’t give up on us; it was a great win for Sigonella.” All-Europe forward Jasmine Mailoto and All-Europe guard Kyrena Smith proved to be too much against the Lady Jaguars who also played Friday and Saturday but weren’t as fortunate in the outcome as the boys, losing the first game 44-24 and the second 51-21. The Lady Jaguars began each game strong before the All-Europe tandem turned it on and never looked back against Sigonella. The overall record for the boys improved to 8-0 while the ladies record went to 2-6. “Overall, it was great to be a part of and to watch each game,” McKissick said. “Both the young men and young ladies fought hard and played well.”
