Regarded as the turning point in the Pacific during World War II, U.S. Navy carrier strike forces, augmented by shore-based bombers and torpedo planes, decisively defeated an Imperial Japanese navy carrier task force during the Battle of Midway, June 4-7, 1942. These actions prevented Japanese forces from capturing Midway Island and marked the dawn of the U.S. Navy’s global prominence and the coming of age of carrier aviation. Midway’s Place in History • America needed to win – just six months after the attack at Pearl Harbor, Midway stood between the enemy and Hawaii, home of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The Japanese were poised to press their advantage, intent on destroying the Pacific Fleet and threatening the West Coast of the United States. • Midway was a dramatic victory facing Japan’s 11 battleships and four carriers, the U.S. Navy fought with no MIDWAY, continued on page 12

Navy detailers assigned to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South located in Millington, Tenn. visited Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella May 22-27, to visit with Sailors in order to address concerns they had about changes to naval policies, the detailing process and moving forward in their Navy careers. The three detailers, Master Chief Quartermaster Andy Millar, Master Chief Master-at-Arms Nancy Brewton and Master Chief Navy Counselor DETAILER, continued on page 12

SECNAV Ray Mabus announced the next Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier will be named the USS John F. Kennedy. It honors the 35th President of the United States and pays tribute to his service in the Navy, in the government, and to the nation.
The enchanting Cinderella Ballet will debut June 7 at the Bellini Opera in Catania. The show, which runs through June 12, features Les Ballets de MonteCarlo, one of the best contemporar y-ballet companies in the world.
