Maharashtra, AP To Sign MoU

I

n a bid to promote tourism in the country, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This was announced at the inauguration of Tourism Information and Reservation Centre of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) at Tourism Plaza in Hyderabad. It also organised a road show to lure the tour operators of Andhra Pradesh to offer tourist destinations of Maharashtra.

In addition, MTDC flagged off its national marketing campaign from Hyderabad. The new office in Hyderabad is the second office of MTDC outside Maharashtra with the first being in Delhi.

Air India To Cut Outbound Travel Fares

utbound travel from India is set to get cheaper with Air India Ltd. looking to lower fares on stopover flights to counter competition from the Jet AirwaysEtihad Airways duo on long-haul routes to the Americas and Europe.

According to reports, Air India will continue to charge a premium in non-stop flights, but will offer competitive rates for destinations where they have even one stop-over.

An altered fare structure would enable Air India to boost load factors in international sectors where it is expected to face intense competition from the Jet-Etihad combine, once the stake sale is completed.

Indians, Pakistanis To Pay More

I

n order to make sure the immigration system is more selective, the British Government is all set to introduce a new scheme that will require visitors from ‘high risk’ countries in Africa and Asia, including India and Pakistan, to put up a 3,000-pound (over $4,600) cash bond before entering Britain.

The scheme, introduced by Theresa May, Home Secretary, will target hundreds of people coming to Britain on six-month visit visas from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The money will be retained by the Government in case if visitors do not return home by the time their visas expire.

The countries have been hand-picked for their high number of visa applications and what the Government views as relatively high levels of immigration abuse and fraud.

Hubli Gets Its First 5-star Hotel

he Taj Group of Hotels has unveiled its latest property—The Gateway Hotel Lakeside Hubli.

Located on the banks of the scenic Lake Unkal on the connecting road between Hubli and Dharwad, the hotel’s 92 rooms and four suites overlook the lake.

India To Get 38 New Hotels by 2015

C

arlson Rezidor Hotel Group is preparing to add 38 new hotels in India and also increase its employee strength by over 9,000 by 2015.

According to a source, the company currently has 62 hotels (14,000 plus employees) in operation in India and is aspiring to reach the 100-hotel-mark by 2015. The expansion plans of more than 5,000 rooms will be restricted to major gateway cities and up-and-coming leisure destinations.

Six Forts On World Heritage List S

ix iconic hill forts of the State of Rajasthan have found their way on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

In the 37th meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the forts of Amber, Chittorgarh, Gagron, Jaisalmer,

Kumbhalgarh and Ranthambore was selected in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

According to sources, since 2011, several missions of ICOMOS (advisory body to UNESCO) visited Rajasthan and discussed the nomination of these forts with the

he travel industry is rigid when it comes to the needs of the older traveller.

According to Age UK’s Engage Business Network (EBK), it found 52 per cent of those aged 50 or above, travel overseas at least once a year and 23 per cent would do more if they felt more catered for. The problems they encounter at airports were what put them off travelling frequently.

EBK encouraged spaces including airports and hotels to have an ‘inclusive design’ that would take into account the needs of older people.

A seminar was held on June 25 to discuss on the issue.

Top 100 Films That Inspire Travel

I

n a bid to celebrate the launch of special cinema screenings it is holding in London next month, British Airways has compiled a list of the 100 greatest films that inspire travel.

Based on recommendations from celebrities and passengers, the selection, chosen by stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Colin Firth and Orlando Bloom, contains everything from classics such as La Dolce Vita, to more obscure films such as Tampopo, set in Japan.

The list includes blockbusters such as The Dark Knight, The Da Vinci Code, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, A Good Year, A Room With A View, The Beach, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Blue Hawaii, Casablanca and Casino Royale to name a few.

GTMC Launches New Campaign

T

he GTMC, UK’s leading professional industry body representing travel management companies, has launched a campaign ‘A Fair Tax on Flying’.

Designed to ensure Air Passenger Duty (APD), the campaign will put pressure on the Government to recognize the damage caused to British businesses by aviation tax and take action to rectify.

According to sources, the members of GTMC are all too aware of how much of a burden APD is to those companies travelling to “to do the deals” that stimulate jobs and growth in the UK. And therefore it is important that the perspective of business is heard in Westminster and that the Government charts a course that removes self-imposed barriers to trade.

Southeast Asian Hotel Rates Continue To Go Up

A Good Year

R

oom rates at hotels in Southeast Asia continued to climb in the first half of 2013.

According to the latest data from STR Global, Southeast Asia experienced a 6.4 per cent raise in average daily rates (ADR) last month, to US $ 138.52. This made it the only Asia Pacific sub-region to record growth. However, in Central and South Asia rates dipped 0.1 per cent to US $ 118.87, in Australasia they fell 0.3 per cent to US $ 163.08, and in Northeast Asia ADR slumped 5.9 per cent to US $ 104.38.

‘High’est Order His Highness Maharaja Gaj Singh Ji Sahib has brought about a renaissance in the tourism industry in Rajasthan. He is not only His Highness of Marwar but also the President of the Indian Heritage Hotels Association (IHHA).

His Highness of Marwar shares his vision for the state with Abdul Naseer and the various issues pertaining to tourism in the desert region and the role of the state government in it.

ABDUL NASEER (AN): You have been the President of the Indian Heritage Hotels Association (IHHA) for over two decades now. What were the challenges you had to face at that time?

MAHARAJA Gaj Singh Ji Sahib: (MGSJS)

I have been the President of IHHA since its inception in 1990. The biggest challenge before us at the time was to first get the association registered as a National Body. In addition, we wanted to get a special category of classification from the Government for our hotels as ‘Heritage’ as most of them were located in remote rural areas

and each is individual in style and construction and they required special consideration and concessions.

AN: How has the journey been so far?

MGSJS: We have striven hard to make the

Government see our point of view and to some extent have succeeded in getting the classifications into ‘Heritage’, ‘Heritage Classic’ and ‘Heritage Grand’. But we still have a long way to go in getting more concessions and incentives, though we have managed to get some benefits both from the Centre and the State Government.

AN: What is the contribution of the Marwars towards the heritage industry?

MGSJS: The region of Marwar, its ancient culture, its forts, palaces and havelis are all a significant part of our national heritage. By maintaining and restoring our palaces and forts and converting them into hotels, we have showcased our rich and vibrant history, colourful fairs and festivals, customs and rituals to the entire world. Today, Rajasthan is a hot tourist destination and attracts tourists from all over the world to see our beautiful palaces, forts and havelis with their intricate architecture, miniature paintings, gardens, museums, etc.

A lot more can be done and the most important of them is to better the infrastructure of the heritage cities and their conservation and cleanliness.

Though good hotels are to be found throughout the State, the cities which are connected by air are more popular as the tourists prefer saving time in travelling.

However, heritage hotels are opening up the interiors but there is a need of a State air taxi service, connecting other important cities.

AN: Do you think the State’s literacy level of 65 to 70 per cent is a hindrance to the development of tourism?

MGSJS: The literacy level in Rajasthan has come a long way in recent times and in fact tourism helps develop other language skills like French, German, Spanish, etc.

AN: The Thar and the Desert Festivals have now been reduced to just becoming a formality. Do you blame the Government or tourism-related professionals for this?

MGSJS: The Government should act as a facilitator and the festivals should be run by the locals with professional help and cultural NGOs.

AN: Do you think the development of the heritage properties in Rajasthan is satisfactory or do you have more ideas to improve?

MGSJS: At the private owners level there is great enthusiasm and competition among young owners who are all transforming their properties imaginatively and aesthetically thus attracting new clients. However, despite the Government of Rajasthan Tourism Policy and tourism being declared an industry the benefits are not reaching the owners.

AN: What do you think is the Government’s attitude when it comes to the protection and security of the heritage properties in the State?

MGSJS: The Government needs to engage more professionals in the field and follow their advice. Sometimes this requires a strong political will!

AN: Do you think the efforts made by the State Government to support the development of the tourism sector are enough?

MGSJS: The policies do not flow down to where it matters most and are not fully understood or properly implemented by the lower bureaucracy who needs to be educated about the benefits of tourism – including our public representatives.

AN: Are you satisfied with the pace at which the development of tourism is happening in the State?

MGSJS: A lot more can be done and the most important of them is to better the infrastructure of the heritage cities and their conservation and cleanliness. Besides, Jaipur should become a hub for international flights.

AN: According to the records of the past few years of the Marwar, royal weddings and other events have been encouraging. Do you think it has helped to improve tourism in Rajasthan in anyway?

MGSJS: Yes of course. Celebrity weddings bring free publicity. When big fat weddings taking place in Marwar, the whole of Rajasthan get good press, media and TV coverage, which go a long way in promoting the destination and improving tourism directly.

AN: In which area do you think the State has a strong tourism potential?

MGSJS: There is no particular area – the entire Travel and Hospitality industry needs to be facilitated to become more efficient providers and more customer- friendly.

AN: Do you think the assistance given by the State Government is enough for the hotel business?

MGSJS: Since the hotel business is one of the highest revenue earners in the State, besides providing a lot of employment opportunities to the youth, more incentives are required from the Government to promote tourism, even if that means simplifying procedures for permis-

sions to establish new hotels.

AN: The other State Governments for development of tourism slap dash by advertising hype. But the proliferation here does not reflect much awareness. Why do you think the State Government is indifferent?

MGSJS: Ask the State Government.

AN: Several renowned hotel groups including the Leela Group, Accor Group, Oberoi Group and JP Group’s large modern hotel projects are underway. Do you think this would damage the heritage industry?

MGSJS: Not at all, as long as they are well located and do not dwarf or damage our heritage sites. Both cater to different segments, which will only complement each other.

AN: Five star luxury hotels or heritage hotels, which one do you think is better?

MGSJS:There is no comparison between the two – both are very different from each other – in location, in ambience, in offering amenities – both give a different experience and cater to different needs. Rajasthan is fortunate to have its five star palace hotels which combine both.

AN: Today Jodhpur is considered as one of the world’s famous tourist destinations. Are you satisfied with the evolution of the city or do you think it needs further upgrading?

MGSJS: It has been a long haul to get this

However, the infrastructure of the city needs to be improved… the roads, cleanliness, drainage system, public transport, the railway stations and bus stands need to be kept clean. Also the staff at the ticketing counters needs to be well-educated and capable of explaining and answering tourist queries. Better air connectivity is needed, which I hope will come with the new domestic air terminal.

AN: Are you aiming to gain worldwide recognition in terms of tourism in Jodhpur?

MGSJS: Jodhpur has already been acclaimed as a leading international tourist destination….

The Golden Desert RAJASTHAN – the name needs no introduction. Popularly known as the ‘Land of the Kings’ all over the world, it has a rich and colourful history making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in India

History

The literal meaning of the word ‘Rajasthan’ or ‘Rajisthan’ is ‘Rajdhani’ i.e. the capital. It was in 1829 that Col. James Tod in his monumental work The Annals And Antiquities Of Rajasthan first extended the denotation of the term to include the entire State.

Before independence, Rajasthan comprised twenty-one principalities and two self-governing feudal houses with Ajmer-Merwara, a British domain situated in the Centre. Among the twenty-one States were Udaipur, Dungarpur, Banswara, Pratapgarh, Shahpura, Bundi, Kota, Sirohi, Karoli, Jaisalmer, Jaipur, Alwar, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Kishangarh, Jhalawar, Datan, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Tonk and Palanpur. The feudal houses were Kushalgarh and Lava. Of these, Datan and Palanpur were amalgamated in Gujarat while the rest formed the modern state of Rajasthan.

The geographical features of the State have affected the people making them not only hardy but also tenacious and chivalrous.

Rajasthan is the land of warriors and heroes, saints and holy men, patriots and martyrs.

It was only with the amalgamation of the States in 1947 that note was taken of the arts and crafts that had been nurtured under the patronage of the princes and feudal lords. These, it was realised, were specimens of a distinctive culture. Modern Rajasthan cherishes these rich traditions that are still alive in the works of art and literature

Architecture

It is apparent from the archaeological remains at Kalibanga, Ganeshwar, Ahar, Noha, etc., that planned lay-out of towns and construction of buildings had started from the time of the Indus Valley Civilization (in nearly 3,000 B.C.). Architectural ruins of the Epic age and the subsequent Maurya, Gupta and Rajput eras are found scattered in many places. It is remarkable that from the 12th century works on architecture came to be written. Among these is the renowned Apraitoricha. Architecture further gained in originality and beauty through the renowned architect, Shilpi Mandan, who wrote extensively about this sphere of art in his works, Prasad Mandan, Rajvallabh Devmurti Prakran and Vastu Mandan. The tradition was earned on by his brother Natha who wrote Vastu Manjiri and by his son, Govind, the writer of Kala Niddhi and Dwar Dipika.

Forts and Palaces

The forts of Rajasthan are amongst the foremost in the country, incorporating the special features elaborated in ancient texts on construction of forts. Thus there are the ‘Kavsees’ and ‘Jeev rakha’ that have the advantages of both sentinel towers or bases and embrasures. Noteworthy among the rock

fortresses, Giri Durg of Rajasthan are Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Siwana, Jalore, Mehrangarh (Jodhpur), Taragarh, Amer, Rajgarh, Dausa and Kuchaman. Outstanding among the Jal Durgs (i.e. forts erected in water) is Gagron Fort near Jhalawar, built on the confluence of the rivers Ahu and Kali Singh.

Besides these, there are some well-known forts constructed in level plains, like the forts of Jaisalmer, Junagarh (Bikaner), Nagore and Chomu. It is not only the architectural beauty, the imposing structure and reputed invincibility of the forts, but also the legends of chivalry associated with them that attract the tourist.

Fergusson, a lover of art, marvelled at the beauty of the many palaces of Rajasthan.

While the palaces built by the Rajputs have small rooms and a simple design, the influence of Mughal art and architecture led to the construction of richly decorated large edifices, with Diwan-i-khas and Diwan-i-aam, jharokas (decorative windows) and gardens with fountains and ponds. With the advent of the British palaces that were built within the ramparts of the fort, came out of this enclosure.

While almost every palace has its own unique beauty there are some that stand out for the enduring beauty of their murals, frescoes, fine stone carvings and their ornamentation.

The havelis (mansions) at Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Karoli, Bharatpur, Kota, Ramgarh, Navalgarh, Fatehpur, Mukundgarh, Mandawa, Pilani, Sardarsahar, Ratangarh, etc. are examples of architectural excellence. While some are admirable for the exquisite stone lattice work, others are of interest for their murals or the harmony of design.

Temples

Rajasthan shares the composite culture of ancient India. Both near the Chittor and at Bairath near Jaipur there are ruins of the Buddhist period. And it was here again that the temple of Vishnu was built when the country came under the sway of the Vaishnav cult.

Even in its ruins that stand today, on the banks of the river Bedach, can be seen that wonder, which was the first Vaishnav temple of India.

Rajasthan nurtured almost all the leading religions of India. Here were established large centres of Buddhism, Jainism, Vaishnavism and Shaivism. And while these have disappeared without a trace in other states, Rajasthan has preserved the legacy of these artistic creations that are an expression of the faith of the devotees of various religions. And therefore, several temples built from the Gupta age to the 19th century can be found here today.

One of the earliest temples on which the date of its construction is inscribed is the temple of Sheetleshwar Mahadeo at Jhalarapatan.

The major part of the temple was constructed in 689 A.D. From the 8th to the 10th century, temples in the Gurjar-Pratihara style were built at Lamba, Buchkala, Mandore, Abhaneri etc. The Sachiyaya Mata temple in Osian is an excellent example of this style of architecture.

Subsequently, the Chouhans built magnificent temples at Kaikeend, Harshnath, Nadol etc. In the south-eastern region, the temples at Badol, Ramgarh, Menal and Kansua need special mention.

In Rajasthan there are numerous Jain temples. Among the principal ones are Mahavir Mandir at Ghanerao, Parshavanath Mandir at Sadri, Navlakha Mandir at Pali and Adinath Mandir at Narlai. Others are found at Nadola, Abu and Ranakpur. The Adinath temple at Dilwara built in 1031 A.D. by Vimal Shah is considered unparalleled for its ornate pillars, finely carved marble roof and the lineaments and forms of the statues ingeniously chiselled to express a wide range of emotions. It has, therefore, been considered an exquisite architectural achievement. Challenging comparison is the Jain temple at Ranakpur, which is called by various names like Choumukha Mandir, Trailokya Deepak, Chaturbhuj Vihar, etc. It is said that the piety of Rajasthan may be seen enshrined in stone in the Surya Mandir of this temple.

Fourteen miles to the north of Udaipur, on the road to Nathdwara stands the temple of Lord Sri Ekiingji built by Bappa Raval. It has stood through the centuries in its beauty and splendid isolation, a witness to momentous historical events.

Painting

Art critics like Anand Coomaraswamy, Percy Brown and N.C. Mehta have considered Rajasthan’s contribution in the sphere of painting as significant. The earliest specimens of paintings in this States are found in the caves of the Chambal Valley, and the excavations/ruins of Kalibanga and Ahad. These include lines deciphered on pots, utensils and seals. Complete pictures and paintings are no longer in existence as compared to other forms of ornamentation. These perish faster with the passage of times.

There are, however, other sources that help to trace the progress of this art. The Buddhist Lama, Taranath in ‘Buddha Dharma’ indicates that there were accomplished painters in this desert region. The art of painting had developed in Gujarat and this arid land ‘The Maru Desh’ prior to the 13th century. An evidence

Music

In his famous work the History Of Persia, Malcolm the well-known historian recounts that in the 5th century the Emperor Bahram Ghor of Iran attacked India and carried away with him twelve thousand musicians. He further notes that it could only have been Rajasthan and Gujarat that could have survived such devastation.

In Rajasthan, the royal houses accorded a place of honour to musicians. Rajasthan also has the distinction of having produced several treatises on music, e.g. Hamir’s Shringarhaar, Kumbha’s Sangeetraj, Pundrik VithaIi’s Raagmala, Ustad Chand Khan’s Swarsagar, Pandit Bhavbhatt’s Murli Prakash, Dwarka Prasad Bhatt’s Raag Chandrika, Radha Krishna’s Raag Ratnakar and Krishnanand Vyas’ Raag Kalpadrum.

In the temples of Nathdwara, Kankroli, Jaipur, Kota, etc. haveli sangeet with all its traditional distinctive features is still alive The couplets and verses of Mira, Daadu, Charandas and other poet devotees have been set to music in the different ragas.

The contribution of Rajasthan singers in the Dhrupad style cannot be ignored.

Through the encouragement of the court musician Bahram Khan of the Daagar Gharana (School of Music) in Dhrupad Dhamas came into existence and nourished in the time of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh The famous singer of old, Manrang is considered to be the founder of the Khayal style of the Jaipur Gharana. The art prospered through the dedicated efforts and innovative variations of several Gharanas of music like the Allahdiyan Khan Gharana, Soniya Gharana, Bikaner, Gharana, Agra Gharana, Rangila Gharana, Qawal Bachhon Gharana and others. The meledious Maand Raga is also a creation of Rajasthan. In our time, Allahjillai Bai of Bikaner and Gavri Devi of Jodhpur have each added the charm of a freshness and individuality in their exposition of Maand.

In Rajasthan, Dholi, Mirasi, Langa, Dhadhi, Kalawant, Bhaat, Rao, Jogi, Kanad, Vairagi, Gandharva, Bhopa, Bhavai, Rana, Kalbelia, etc. are castes of professional musicians and singers.

Folk instruments devised on simple principles of sound reveal the ingenuity of the creators. The wide variety of the instruments provides music suitable for all occasions and festivals.

The main folk instruments are Sarang, Jantar, Ravana-hatha, Ektara, Apang, Kamayacha, Bansuri, Algoja, Pungi, Shehnai, Satara, Mashq, Nad, Morchang, Tota, Bankiya, Shankh, Singi, Mridang, Dholak, Dhol, Nagada, Narpat, Maadal, Chang, Khanjari, Matka, Daph, Damru, Taasa, Manjira, Jhangh, Thali and Khartal.

of this is the exposition of the ‘Kalpsutra’ style in the Jain literature of the time.

Different styles of painting developed under the patronage of the rulers in the princely States of Rajasthan. Noteworthy among these are the styles of painting evolved in Jodhpur, Bikaner, Alwar, Jaipur, Kishangarh, Mewar and Bundi. The styles are identified by the difference in the use of colour and border, portrayal of birds and animals, the human form and features, the shape of the eyes and ornaments. For instance, in the paintings of Jodhpur and Bikaner, the predominant colour is a bright yellow, in Jaipur green, in Udaipur red, white in Kishangarh, bright saffron in Bundi and bright green in Alwar. For the scenic setting, the Jodhpur and Bikaner artists choose mango tree, the crow, the kite and the camel; Jaipur and Alwar choose a peepul tree and the peacock; Kota and Bundi, a palm tree, the deer and the lion.

The smooth flowing lines of the eye in Jodhpur paintings give it an almond like shape; in Jaipur it is elongated like a fish; in Udaipur large and liquid like the eye of a deer; arched like the bow in Kishangarh; like a mango leaf in Bundi and like the little khanjan bird in the Bikaner style of painting.

Initially, the influence of the Ajanta style is noticeable in the paintings but after the 17th century the influence of the Mughal style is evident. Later there was an admixture of the Punjabi style and when, subsequently, the Rajput rulers joined forces with the Mughals in their military expeditions to southern India, the influence of the South too crept in. The styles in Rajasthan undoubtedly had some basic similarities. Originally, the Mewar painters drew a round face with a pointed nose and ‘deer eyes’ or ‘meenakshi-like eyes’. The Marwar School while retaining these facial features gave the forms vestments and ornaments in the Mughal style. Both in Nathdwara and Bundi, the facial features and forms were drawn in the Mewar style, with Bundi painters giving the background of mountains, streams and trees.

Dance

The origin of Kathak can be traced to Rajasthan. The style (of dramatising and enacting a story in dance form) developed through the presentation of Puranic tales in temples.

Here the Jaipur Gharana particularly that of Sanwal Das made a significant contribution in the development of the dance form.

While the Ghoomar is popular all over Rajasthan there are other regional folk dances too: the Gidar and Chang Nritya of Shekhawati, the Gair of Marwar-Mewar, the Dandia of Marwar, the Dhol Nritya of Jalore, the Agni Nritya of Bikaner and the Bum Nritya of Alwar-Bharatpur. The Chari dance, Bhavai, Teratali and Kachchi Gori are the enchanting dances of some of the nomadic tribes.

Theatre Arts

The art was developed in the time of Samant Singh who was also known as Nagridas. Nagridas was greatly influenced by the Vaishnav sect and the women popularly known by the name Bani Thani.

Nagridas and Bani Thani were painted together like Radha Krishna. But it is Nihal Chand’s potrait of Bani Thani that is generally considered to be a masterpiece of Rajasthani painting. In the opinion of connisseurs of art it stands comparison with the world famous Mona Lisa.

Along with divergences, and touches of originality, paintings in Rajasthan share certain common features. These are the use of bright colours and the choice of themes like the Ragas, the seasons and scenes from the Bhagwat Gita, the Ramayana and the Geet Govinda. All the styles initially were influenced by the Ajanta paintings and later by Mughal ones.

The art has been modernised through the efforts and creations of artists like Master Kundan Lal Mistry, Muller (a German artist) Bhattu Lal, Bhoor Singh Shekhawat, Nandlal Verma, Shivnarain Chaugan, Ramgopal Vijaevargeya, Devakinandan Sharma, Vishnudutt Sharma, Gopal Ghosh, Dwarka Prasad Sharma, Sakhalkar Parmanand Choyal, V.C. Giri, Jyoti Swaroop Mohan Verma, Premchand Goswami, Vidhya Sagar Upadhyaya, Sumahendra, Radhavallabh Suresh Sharma, Shail Choyal and others.

In the beginning of the 20th century the establishing of the ‘Parsi theatre’ gave a new di-

mension to dramatic performances. It provided a stimulis to producers like Mehboob Hasan (in Alwar) who produced a number of plays.

Others whose contribution is significant are Manaklal Dangi, Kanhhaiyalal Panwar and Ganpatlal Dangi.

Handicrafts

The story of man’s ingenuity and creativity goes back in antiquity to the Stone Age, but there is later archaeological evidence of not only earthen pots and pans but also of ivory articles having been grafted in the far-off historical past. Some of the traditional crafts are still flourishing today: Jaipur stands out for its enamel work, though enamelling is done in Nathdwara and Pratapgarh too.

Besides, Jaipur craftsmen are known for making ornaments inlaid with precious stones and for blue pottery.

Famous for paintings and decoration of large vessels of camel hide is the Ustad family of Bikaner. Unbreakable earthen toys and crockery moulded at Molaila have made their way into the export market. Lac bangles are now a part of the ethnic outfit. Block printing in traditional designs and colours is continued at Balotra, Barmer, Pali, Jaisalmer, Chittor, Sanganer, Bagru, Kaladera, Jodhpur etc. and is widely appreciated in the world of fashion today. While the dyers of Jodhpur have exhibited consummate skill in preparation of the work of ‘tie and dye’ fabrics in vibrant colours, there are skilled craftsman in Bikaner, Barmer, Pali, Udaipur and Nathdwara too. In many areas of Rajasthan attractive rugs and carpets are woven. The ‘badla’ or embellished water bottle of Jodhpur is again an elegant piece of handiwork.

Nagaur Fort (Nagaur) Nagaur or Naga-Pur is referred to in the Mahabharata. The kingdom of Ahichhatrapur, which Arjuna is said to have conquered and subsequently offered to his Guru Dronacharya, was perhaps some of the area of the Nagaur district. The foundation of city dates back to 4th century B.C.

ehrangarh Fort, located in Jodhpur city is one of the largest forts in India. The fort is situated 400 feet (122 m) above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh

There are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning ‘victory’), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Fattehpol (also meaning ‘victory’) gate was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the defeat of the Mughals. The palm imprints upon these still attract much attention even today.

The museum in the Mehrangarh Fort is one of the most well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. In one section of the fort museum there is a selection of old royal palanquins, including

RAJASTHAN RULES Being the Tourism Minister of Rajasthan, involves not only luring the tourists but also looking into the nitty-gritties of improving the remotest interiors of this desert region. Bina Kak, Tourism Minister of Rajasthan, discusses at length to Dr. Prakash Purohit, on the effective measures and actions taken by the Government for the further development of the State in its entirety.

Dr. Prakash Purohit (PP): What do you think of the declaration of our six forts in UNISCO’s World Heritage list?

Bina Kak (BK): I am profoundly humbled by the declaration of our six hill forts that have been inscribed on the UNESCO s World Heritage list. Jai ho!!! Congratulations to all.

Dr. Prakash Purohit (PP): Tell us, in recent years, how many centrally sponsored schemes have been approved in Rajasthan? And how much is the amount given by the Central Government for these schemes?

Bina Kak (BK): Around 27 centrally sponsored schemes of `11,151 lakhs were approved for the years 2009-10 to 2011-12.

PP: Which are these schemes?

BK: As per the centrally sponsored schemes from the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, in the years 2011-12 priority wise work included mega tourist schemes for Jaipur, exhibition of lights and sound in Ranakpur, and basic development work for tourists. Also some schemes were prepared proposing further development of tourist places.

The flood lights circuit of Hawamahal, JantarMantar, Amer Fort, Hathi Gavaon, Amer and fort of Gagron are some of the first phase schemes and the work on these are almost complete. The light and sound exhibition programme at Kumbhalgarh is currently being conducted.

PP: What has been done to improve rural tourism in Rajasthan?

BK: To improve rural tourism in Rajasthan, work of ` 375 lakhs in seven districts and eight villages was conducted initially. Then in the year 2012-13, ` 350 lakhs were spent on development work in seven villages of seven districts. With the goal of encouraging the rural tourism, the Ministry of Tourism organised Abhaneri festival which was held between December 29 and 31, 2008. During the festival, special preference was given to the local artists. In addition, development work was completed in Baichun-Jaipur, Bassi-Chittorgarh, Bhuri Pahari-Sawai Madhopur, Alssisar-Jhunjhunu and Bhalo Ka Ghuda, Udaipur villages. The cost incurred to complete the work was ` 50 lakhs for each village.

PP: What is the current position of tourism policy in Rajasthan?

BK: To encourage the investment in the tourism sector in Rajasthan the period of tourism policy unit was extended to March 2013. In rural sectors the distribution of Government field for tourism units is taking place as per District Level Committee (DLC) rates under this.

PP: What is the State’s involvement at the International level?

BK: The tourism department of Rajasthan is taking active participation in International

Tourist Bureau (ITB) – Berlin, World Tourist Mart (WTM) – London, International Tourism Boards – Singapore, Spain, Dubai Shopping Festival, Geneva Festival Switzerland, The Hindu’s Discover India – Singapore since last four years. In these many fascinating dimensions of tourism, the development of Rajasthan were presented and it have won International awards too.

PP: What are the initiatives taken to improve adventure tourism in the State?

BK: International Balloon Festival of Kites is being included in the departmental calendar to promote adventure tourism. Hot Air Balloon Festival was organised in Pushkar Fair – 2010 and the International Kite Festival was organised between January 5 and 7, 2011 in Udaipur.

PP: What other activities have been conducted for the development of the State?

BK: Rajasthan Tourism Business Bill, 2010 (Trade Act) was conducted on April 2, 2010. Conversion power of land up to ten hector was given to the District Collector for the tourism units.

By encouraging rural tourism and improving employment opportunity at local level one scheme has been taken from every village of each district for the next five years.

ajasthani costumes shows wonderful cultural legacy. The garments are loose and free-flowing, comfortable and conservative. They prevent the sunburns that result from the direct exposure to the harsh sun-rays. The textile used for these clothes is mainly soft cotton, which provides comfort during the scorching summer months.

The winters in Rajasthan are extremely cold; hence, the men and women cover themselves with woollen shawls, cloaks and scarves to protect them from the dipping temperature.

Over all, people here like to adorn themselves in brightly coloured clothes perhaps to compen-

sate for the dry barrenness of the environment in general.

Women’s Costume The sari and the ghaghra-choli are the most common women’s costumes in Rajasthan.

The saris are made of cotton or silk, and are embellished with embroidery work. The coloured stones, silken threads and tinsels are used to develop the charming floral patterns and traditional themes, and to promote the rich look of the sari. Depending upon the economic condition of the family, the zari work or embroidery is done by using the silver or golden threads, and the semi-precious gems or

coloured stones. Tie and dye Bandhni and the block printed textiles are commonly preferred.

In the rural corners of the state, the women pre-

fer to wear the short or long frilly and flowing skirts. Generally, their daily wear is the ghaghra, and lehengas are being worn for the formal occasions. They wear the matching blouses like choli, kunchuki or kancholi, depending on the length of the blouse. Women tie the ghaghras and lehengas tightly around the waist that has increasing width at the base. The ghaghras are generally shorter in length; extended up to the calf, but the lehengas are longer; reaching up to the ankles. They are also adorned just like the sari.

The odhni (a woman’s long scarf or shawl worn loosely over the shoulders) is a very important part of the costume in Rajasthan. It is teamed up with the lehenga or ghaghra choli. It can also be worn with the sari on special occasions.

The odhni is a mark of respect and conformity among women. The bridal odhni is an exquisite piece of hand-embroidered attire.

The Muslim women in the State wear the burkhas or the traditional black veil, in place of odhni.

Men’s attire The traditional men’s costumes in Rajasthan comprises an upper garment, dhoti or pyjamas as lower garments, and a majestic pagri (head gear), which lends gravity to a male’s personality.

The pagri is the most popular and commonly used head gear among the men of the State. In addition, Achkans (long jacket) and kurtas also form a part of the traditional men’s attire. Some times in winter, dhabla or a shawl is worn to get protection from the chilly weather.

Royal Dressings The royals of the State of Rajasthan have their own style when it comes to clothes. They wear large turbans decorated with jewels or feathers. The Rajput, because of their close association with the Mughal courts, has adopted the Mughal style of costumes. They prefer the local dhabla and have replaced the kashmiri shawls and pashminas.

However, now-a-days, the girls and women in the urban areas prefer to wear salwar suits and western style outfits. The men too fancy comfortable casual wear such as t-shirts, jeans and trousers. But these apparels do not have the elegance and class of traditional costumes in Rajasthan.

History

In the year 1459, Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs founded Jodhpur, the former capital of the Marwar State. The origins of this princely State can be traced back to the Mahabharata times.

It was once a part of the celebrated silk route from central Asia to the sea ports of Gujarat.

Popularly referred to as the ‘Sun City’ and ‘Blue City’, Jodhpur is a blend of five hundred years of tumultuous history, rich traditions and modernism.

It was originally surrounded by a wall that extended up to 10 kms., with eight gateways facing in various directions. But, today, the remains of the wall can be seen only at few places.

Set at the foot of the famous Mehrangarh Fort, the city over the years has grown extensively at a fast pace and has today emerged as the second most important city of Rajasthan.

Considered to be the ‘gateway to the Thar’, the city is a doorway to the dreamland of sand dunes and shrubs, rocky terrains and thorny trees. It is an integral part of the world renowned ‘Desert Triangle’, which has emerged as one of the most important tourist circuits of the country. The other two destinations comprising of the famous ‘Desert Triangle’ are Jaisalmer and Bikaner.

Location

Jodhpur opens up into what is now the main city via the Sojati Gate and the Jalori Gate in the southern walls of the fort. The Station Road leads on to the Sojati Gate and Nai Sarak areas, which are the important commercial hubs. The airport is situated near Ratanada, 6 kms. from the main town.

Jodhpur has good local transport comprising buses and autos.

Historical monuments Mehrangarh Fort The most imposing structure in Jodhpur is also the biggest fort in Rajasthan. Built atop a 150 metres high hill, the fort has withstood many a battle. To the south is the Umaid Bhawan Palace and closer to the fort, the Old City, famously painted blue to ward off Marwar’s terrible heat.

A museum here has an exquisite collection of artefacts, including some very fascinating war booty and even more fascinating armoury. The first several rooms of the museum are arranged around a courtyard called Sangar Chowki, where coronations were held until 1952. Inside, in the delicately worked sandstone apartments, there is a wonderful collection of palanquins and elephant seats (howdahs), the outstanding one being a silver howdah gifted by Shahjahan. It is decorated with a relief of lions, whose faces look peculiarly like shocked Rajput Warriors. Up one level is a room full of excellent miniature paintings in the Marwar style of the 18th and the 19th centuries. The royal splendour of the first family of Marwar is evident in the spread of coutumes on display.

frescoes and stained galss.

Half a km away is the Chamunda Mata Temple.

To the right of the museum is the exit via Loha Pol. The handprints of Raja Man Singh’s widows, who committed sati in 1843 are still visible here.

On the way down is the Rao Jodha Ka Phalsa, where one is greeted by the folk musicians. Past Fathe Pol is the Jai Pol to exit the fort. To get to the Old City go straight down from Fathe Pol.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

This spectacular palace sprawled over an area of 26 acres, was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh between 1929 and 1942, as a famine relief project and costed over Rs. 1.5 crores. It is said to be the largest personal residence in the world as well as the only palace to be constructed in 20th century.

Chief architects H.V. Lancaster and J.R. Lodge created this perfectly symmetrical, formal building.

It bears a stamp of solidity and state architecture and is a splendid example of Indo-colonial and art deco style of the ’30s. The unique feature of this palace is the fact that hand-chiselled sandstone blocks have been put together in a special system of interlocking and there is no mortar binding.

The site of the palace was auspiciously ordained.

A special railway line had to be laid 10 kms. long, so that the sandstone used for the construction, could be transported from the quarries. A workforce of around 3,000

toiled for 15 years to complete this magnificent edifice. The imposing central dome of the palace rising to a height of 170 ft., has a whispering gallery underneath. The palace studded with several splendid suites and courtyards has 347 rooms, which employ few devices of local Rajput architecture. It also has a fine auditorium, a ball room, a banquet hall for 300, eight more modest dining rooms, several kitchens and an underground swimming pool.

The palace is cold and enclosing, unlike other outward looking desert palaces. It was probably the first among Indian palaces to make use of lifts and air-conditioning systems and electricity. A portion of the palace has been converted into a luxurious hotel. There is also an excellent museum, housing models of aeroplanes, weapons, antique clocks and bob watches, priceless crockery and hunting trophies. Both sections retain the ambience of royal splendor.

by Maharaja Ajit Singh (1671-1724), amidst the beautiful Mandore gardens. The art gallery here exhibits paintings of the Maharajas and events associated with them.

A complete section of miniature paintings on Raga-Raganis is also displayed. The museum exhibits splendid sculptures of Hindu deities.

Kaylana Lake

On the West of Jodhpur lie the Kaylana and Takhat Sagar lakes, adjacent to each other, separated only by a narrow strip of land through which the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer Highway passes. The artificial lake (Kaylana) was constructed in 1872 on the site of two former palaces and gardens. Built by Pratap Singh, the then Prime Minister of Jodhpur, the lake is spread over an area of 84 sq.kms.

Girdikot & Sardar Market The colourful bazaar near the Clock Tower, retains the medieval flavour of a trading town.

The busy narrow lanes around are dotted with tiny shops selling locally manufactured exquisite handicraft items.

One can buy Rajasthani textiles, clay figurines, marble curios with inlay work and intricate Rajasthani silver jewellery at very competitive prices.

The opulent white marble memorial was built in 1889, in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The ornately carved cenotaph lies near the fort and nestles on a low rhyolite hillock, standing out in complete contrast with its surroundings.

This masterpiece of architecture is also noted for the high quality marble used for its construction, especially the rare 15 cm. thick, pure dazzling slabs of white marble. Inside the cenotaph are fine portraits of successive rulers of Marwar and a complete genealogical table of the royal family of Jodhpur. Jaswant Thada is also the site of royal crematorium and several other cenotaphs commemorating the members of the erstwhile royal family can be seen here.

Balsamand Lake & Palace

The well laid out historic gardens with high rock terraces, mark the site of the ancient capital of Marwar. The gardens are studded with six glorious cenotaphs known as dewals. These domed royal chhatris set on a high plinth are crowned with souring spires and adorned with ornate carvings.

The dewals mark the spots, where the Marwar rulers were cremated. The highest and finest dewals are built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh and Maharaja Ajit Singh. Another attraction of this enchanting garden is the ‘Hall of Heroes’, which houses sixteen gigantic figures, chiselled out of one single rock. The statues are either of popular Hindu deities or famous folk deities.

There is also a small amusement park within the precincts of the garden. The garden is a popular picnic site, especially during the rainy season.

Government Museum, Man-

It is housed in a stately building in the centre of the Umaid Public Garden. The museum exhibits a rich collection of armory, textiles, local arts and crafts, miniature paintings, portraits, manuscripts and images of Jain Tirthankaras. Many stuffed animals are also displayed. The military section includes cumbersome wooden biplane models etc.

The enchanting lake with a summer palace on its embankment was built by Balak Rao Panhar in 1159 and is regarded as one of the oldest in Asia.

It was later extended by Maharaja Sur Singh and transformed into a summer palace with a sprawling garden all around.

The lush groves of mango, guava, papaya and other fruits add to the scenic splendor of the site.

The entire property has now been converted into a luxury resort.

Shopping

Jodhpur is a paradise for shoppers. It is wellknown for its tie-and-dye fabric, jootis and mojaris, lacquer-ware, silverware, semi-precious stones, antiques, woodwork and marble souvenirs. The area around Ghanta Ghar of the Clock Tower is the best to shop. For tie-dyed fabrics, head to Kapra Bazaar, Tripolia Bazaar and for silver Jewellery, Sarafa Bazaar. National Handlooms, which has branches on Nai Sarak, near the Circuit House,

Pratap Nagar and Gandhi Maidan, and Thar Handlooms, Shyam Silk Store and Lucky Silk Store, all near Sojati Gate, are good for sarees, dupattas, block-printed textiles and suit pieces. Camel leather work and jooti shops are to be found all over the city, but the best place to shop for traditional Jodhpuri mojaris and jootis is Juti Corner, right across the Railway station. Prices begin at Rs 100 and can go up as high as a few thousand rupees depending on the kind of craftsmanship you are looking for.

The area between the Palace Road and the Circuit House has a number of antique and woodwork shops.

Some of the handicraft stores in the city include Lalji Handicrafts, Shekhawati Art Emporium, Rajasthan Art Emporium, Maharani Heritage Art School and Rama Bazaar. Both Umaid Bhawan and Ajit Bhawan have shops that sell exclusive, boutiquestyle jewellery, handicrafts, accessories and souvenirs. The exquisite handicrafts make Jodhpur a treasure trove for shoppers from all over the world.

Cuisine

The The Jodhpuri cuisine is an experience in itself. A number of Indian delicacies have originated in Jodhpur. Some of the most popular of them are the Makhaniya Lassi, Mawa Kachori, Pyaaj Kachori, Hot & Spicy Mirchibada (A preparation made with potato, onion, chilli and gramflour), Dal Bati Churma, Panchkuta, Lapsi (a special kind of dessert made with wheat, jaggery, and ghee), Kachar mircha curry (made with chilli and kachar, a special type of vegetable grown in desert area) and Kadhi (made with gramflour, curd and chilli) with Baajre ka sogra (a sweet preparation of pearl millet and jaggery) to name a few.

Jodhpur is known for its sweets ranging from traditional Makhanbada, Mawa Kachori to Bengali Roshogollas and Ras Madhuri.

Education

Jodhpur is fast becoming a major education hub for higher studies in India. Almost every major discipline has a dedicated institution in the city, with disciplines varying from Engineering, Medicine, Law, Design among others. With many renowned academicians, Jodhpur is also India’s largest hub for preparation of the CA (Chartered Accountant) entrance examination held through-

out India by ICAI (The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India).

Elected representatives

The present Member of Parliament from Jodhpur is Chandresh Kumari of Congress, who is the sister of Gaj Singh, the former Maharaja of Jodhpur. She has been recently inducted into PM Dr. Manmohan Singh’s cabinet of UPA II Government as the Cultural Minister.

The current MLAs from the three constituencies of Jodhpur are from Jodhpur City: Shri Kailash Bhansali (Sardarpura); Shri Ashok Gehlot (Soorsagar); Smt. Suryakanta Vyas.

Shri Ashok Gehlot is also the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

The Administration

The administration of Jodhpur consists of a District Collector, followed by four Additional District Magistrates (I,II, Land Conversion and City ADM).

Presently, the Collector and District Magistrate is Mr. Gaurav Goyal (I.A.S).The city is also under Police Commissioner system with Mr. Bhupinder Kumar Dak (I.P.S) as the Police commissioner of the city.

Airport Jodhpur Airport is one of the prominent airports of Rajasthan. It was primarily constructed as an Air Force base because of its important strategic location (Jodhpur Airport played the crucial role during Indo-Pak wars in 1965, 1971). It is the most powerful air base in South Asia.

Road It is connected by road to all major cities in Rajasthan. Outer States like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Surat, Ujjain, Agra are also well connected. Rajasthan Roadways also provide Volvo bus service to major cities.

Master Craftsmen In The Desert Oasis

A

bout 22 kms., in the countryside South of Jodhpur are the Bishnoi Villages. The Bishnois are craftsmen, rich in culture and skill.

Followers of the 15th century sage Jambeshwar whose 29 principles (bis noi) are based upon total protection of all forms of life, and the environment, the Bishnois pray to the green trees and animals that inhabit their land.

These simple, nature loving and ecofriendly sect of Hindu religion is gifted with pottery and weave artistry.

The weavers use camel hair in the weaving process, and beautiful ‘dhurries’ (rugs) are woven after the materials are dyed with vegetable colouring.

The Bishnoi villages are a perfect place to experience the traditions and customs of tribal life. A place caught in a time warp, the life in the villages goes on like the days of the past.

Jodhpur’s Crowning Glory

The recently renovated resort-style hotel is a hugely popular place built at the turn of the century for Maharaj Ajit Singh (younger brother of the Maharaja Umaid Singh). It incorporates castlelike walls and traditional Hindustani elements, as well a variety of rooms.

The Palace The Maharajas of Jodhpur lived and they ruled from the Jodhpur Fort, the famous Meharangarh. Around a hundred years ago the Maharaja of Jodhpur decided to build a palace called the Umed Bhawan Palace.

His younger brother Maharaj Ajit Singh who was the then Prime Minister of the State was allotted space to make his home. Thus the Ajit Bhawan Palace came into being. It was designed by an English architect and was executed in the Jodhpur stone.

Incorporating the traditional style of gardens the building was proportionately built with two floors in mind. The high ceiling ground floor

had a mezzanine section regulating cool air circulation and keeping the rooms cool from the scorching sun in the summer.

The Zennana or the woman’s chambers were on the first floor. The gates to this section of the palace were guarded by specialised and trained guards. The chances of men wandering in the section of the house were so slim that ladies would comfortably float around without a veil, in spite of the decorum of a strict Parda (a custom where the veil hides the face).

An alarm bell would sound all, when Rani Ajit Singh would head down the grand staircase to the lady’s porch, which had huge swinging doors that would close once the Buick would be parked for her Highness.

The main courtyard was a meeting place for local dignitaries and people from the villages.

The jails, stables, a temple and a well were part of the right wing of the house. On the left wing there was an orchard and in the front of the house the large gardens.

The roof of the house has interesting latticework and it interconnected two staircases that once led to the ladies wing of the house.

Two decades later, Maharaj Swaroop Singh, his son, together with his wife Rani Ushadevi under took the restoration of this exotic palace into an exclusive heritage hotel, with carved pillars,

Legend has it that the Mughal emperor, Akbar came here to the saint in the 16th century in quest of a boon for an heir and the saint obliged. Vishal Gautam, Executive Chef, RAAS Haveli talks to Rajasthan The Golden Desert on why Rajasthani cuisine is the most sought after in the world Rajasthan The Golden Desert (RTGD): What urged you to become a chef?

Vishal Gautam (VG): I have been very passionate about cooking since childhood.

RTGD: Could you tell us in brief about your journey in this profession?

VG: Well, I started my career with the Taj as a trainee and worked my way up by working in several hotels including the Grand Hyatt, Aman Resorts (in India as well as overseas), Universal Resorts (overseas) and now at RAAS, Jodhpur.

RTGD: How long have you been in this field?

VG: Its almost 16 years now that I have been cooking.

RTGD: Why do you think Rajasthani food is so popular worldwide?

VG: Well, the food is subtle and well-balanced. Freshly grown and hand ground local spices enhances the flavour. In addition, it is its uniqueness as most of the stuff is made in milk products and pure ghee.

RTGD: Why has Indian food generated such a rich variety of deserts and sweets?

VG: We Indians believe that every auspicious occasion begins with sweets. So the emphasis is to make the best and high quality sweets.

METHOD: 1. Hang the yoghurt overnight in a muslin

2. Take dry hung yoghurt, add chopped onion, chilli, coriander, honey and chaat masala, chopped ginger, salt and mix it well.

3. Make patties with the above mixture and coat it with flour and sesame seeds. (each patty should weigh about 45–50 grams) 4. Heat the oil till the smoking point and fry the patties for 30 to 35 seconds or till golden brown colour.

Teej: A Time For Revelry Rajasthan, a barren desert land, becomes resplendent with the colours of joyous celebration and gay abandon during its fairs and festivals. The State’s vibrant and colourful culture and traditions have been attracting people from all over the world. The colour and charm of Rajasthan and its people can best be seen in their celebration of various festival and fairs.

ajasthan is extremely popular for the annual fairs that are held with pomp and splendour to mark the celebrations for religious occasions and festivals. In fact, celebrations occur almost round the year and are a great opportunity for tourists to gain an insight into the life of the people and the culture of Rajasthan during their travel.

Other than the traditional fairs, recently established festivals, which involve elephants, camel races, dance and music, have been specially organized for tourists.

Teej is one of the most popular festivals of India.

It is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion by women in the country.

Since Teej falls at the outbreak of the monsoons, it is also popularly known as the ‘Sawan Festival’ and is usu-

ally celebrated in the month of July-August. The festival is dedicated to the divine couple – Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Though Teej is celebrated at various places in India and abroad, major Teej celebrations take place in the highly cultural city of Jaipur in Rajasthan.

A day-long procession and celebration create a vivid atmosphere all over the place. On this day, women and young girls wear their best clothes and adorn themselves with fine jewellery. They gather at a nearby temple or a common place and offer prayers to Goddess Parvati for the well-being of their husbands. Swings, traditional songs and dancing are the unique features of Teej celebrations in the State. All over, swings are hung from trees and decorated with fragrant flowers.

Women perform traditional folk dance dressed in green coloured outfits and sing beautiful Teej songs while enjoying their sway on swings bedecked with flowers.

During the festival, the markets in Jaipur are stocked with the trendiest women accessories and clothes. Most of the fabric clothes display laheria (tie and dye) prints.

Sweet shops display different varieties of Teej sweets but ghevar (disc-shaped, made from oil, flour and sugar syrup) is the main sweet of the season. At some shops malpuas (Indian sweet pancake) are also prepared in great quantities.

During this festival, fairs are also held in number of cities in Rajasthan. However, the most impressive ones take place in Jaipur. The entire city is immersed in the colour of this festival. There are number of stalls showcasing the culture of Rajasthan. Handicrafts, traditional Rajasthani dresses and junk jewelry are some of the major attractions for tourists visiting the fairs. Besides, one of the other attractions of the Jaipur Teej fair is the traditional Rajasthani mehndi (henna).

The Teej procession of Jaipur not only attracts visitors from India but also lures a large number of international tourists. The major high point of this procession is the magnificently decorated idol of Goddess Parvati which is kept on a palanquin and carried through the Pink City of India. Thousands of devotees throng the procession which is carried out for two consecutive days. Antique gilt palanquins, bullock carts pulling cannons, chariots, caparisoned elephants, camels, bands, and dance groups form a part of the grand procession. The palanquin of the Goddess is carried by eight men dressed in red colour. The procession is a very huge affair which moves through various places in Jaipur.

Folk artists and performers enchant the crowd on the way with their splendid performances. Some people even dress up like Gods and Goddesses and play various musical instruments. Teej prasad is distributed among the crowd of devotees.

Types of Teej Festivals in India There are three different variations of Teej, namely – Hariyali Teej, Kajari Teej and Hartalika Teej. All the three Teej falls in different times of the year and the date of the festival is decided according to the arrival of monsoon and hence it changes every year. There are special rituals and customs associated with every Teej.

Significance of Teej Festival Teej festival is an important festival of Rajasthan.

As a tourist guide, he is among the few who has made a name for himself. He not only provides information on cultural, historical and contemporary heritage to the tourists who visit Rajasthan but is also quick to answer every query that is thrown at him, with élan. Kan Singh Rathore in conversation with Rajasthan The Golden Desert, on his vocation and the various challenges he faces on his day-to day work as a guide Rajasthan The Golden Desert (RTGD): What prompted you to become a guide?

Kan Singh Rathore (KSR): I have been very impressed with the culture of Rajasthan since childhood.

This is the only reason I decided to become a guide.

RTGD: Have you gone through any special training or a course to pursue this career?

KSR: Yes, I did! After completing my graduation, I did the tourism guide course from Rajasthan Tourism Guide Course in Jodhpur.

KSR: According to the Tourist Arrival Statistics, the tourists’ first choice is Udaipur, followed by Jaipur, Ajmer, Mount Abu, Jodhpur and Pushkar.

RTGD: How many languages can you converse in? Does it help to know several languages in your profession?

KSR: Most of the time, we speak in English to guide a tourist. But several other languages including Spanish and French are greatly used all around the world. It will be an added qualification if a guide knows to converse in various languages.

RTGD: Which countries do most of the tourists come from?

KSR: I can say, we have a majority of them coming all the way from France. But we also have tourists coming from other countries like U.K.,

KSR: The Government and the private sectors involved in tourism are trying to do their best to provide with the finest facilities to the tourists from all over the world. RTGD: Rajasthan’s special welcoming line; ‘PADHARO MAHARE DESH’ is losing its original touch. Your views on that.

KSR: No, not at all. We have yet to go miles and miles before things get perfect and we reach satisfaction.

KSR: There is this particular incident that is still very vivid in my mind. Some time back a group of foreign tourists were taken on a tour to the Mehrangarh Fort. Now, there are several gates inside the fort. While crossing the final gate, immediately to the left, these tourists noticed handprints of the queens who in 1843 immolated themselves on the funeral pyre of their husband, Maharaja Man Singh. Some of the female tourists, ignorant about the facts and figures of our rich history began making some weird remarks and even made fun of them. It was when I explained to them the significance and the sacrifices made by the
