The Big 3 With the evergrowing list of many films and anime series out there, it’s hard to know where to start. This top three guide to movies may help you decide where to begin your anime experience.

ANIMATION

3 Movies to Get You Started By: Andrew Wills

1. Princess Mononoke Most fans consider this film to be a masterpiece. Created by Hayao Miyazaki, one of the giants in the anime world, the film is an allegory with a strong plot. Set in times past, the men and the gods are battling over the resources the earth has to offer. Ashitka, a village prince, kills a boar god, and in return for this deed, he is cursed. If he doesn’t locate a cure, the curse will take his life. He leaves home in search of the cure, and there he finds humans fighting not only the gods, but also themselves. As Ashtika struggles to find the answer to his problem and those of the society around him, he finds himself in a much larger fight.

2. AKIRA At the time it was made, AKIRA had the highest budget of any other anime film in history, and as a result of this amazing effort, most anime fans consider it to be the definitive classic in the anime world. This film is based on a manga series that was created by Katsuhiro Otomo, and while the plot can be a little confusing to some (it was, after all, based on a six volume manga set), the amazing visual style captures

many fans the instant they see it. The plot deals with New Tokyo, as it’s been rebuilt after World War 3. The city itself is a mess with violence, political problems, and a brewing revolution in the distance. One young man (Tetsuo) runs into a military experiment in the form of a boy. The project is known as AKIRA. Because of the encounter, Tetsuo finds powers of his own which leads the government to target him.

3. Vampire Hunter D Because this was one of the first anime films shown in the U.S., this is the introduction many get to the anime genre. It typifies anime horror

their weapons and robotic horses). One town is ruled by Count Magnus Lee (a vampire), and when a small girl is bitten, she seeks out the help of the tall, dark stranger named D. films, and the level of gore makes most viewers who love that sort of thing “ooh” and “ahh” at the sheer sight. The film is set ten thousand years to the future, and the world isn’t quite like we know it today. There are lots of monsters simply wandering around, and the people seem to have gone backward in time, living the life our ancestors might have (if you don’t count

Anime: An Art Style Like No Other Anime art is hard to miss when you see it, unlike any other style of animation you’ll know instantly that you’re watching anime as soon as you turn it on. Art Style Movement By: Andrew Wills

Artwork By: Nash Nalzaro

The large round eyes. The characteristic “V” shaped chin. Anime art is hard to miss when you see it. In fact, unlike any other style of animation, you’ll know instantly that you’re watching anime as soon as you turn it on. Let’s take a moment to look at some of the typical features you’ll find with this animation style.

The Eyes One of the first things most people notice about anime is the characters’ eyes. They tend to be large and very round. While not all anime has this standard eye style, much of it does, even the newer films. This style can be credited to the father of anime, Tezuka Osamu, who initially created Astro Boy (or Tetsuwan Atomu as most true anime fans know him). As he was drawing the character, it has been said that Osamu was attempting to emulate Betty Boop who had become quite popular throughout Japan. In fact, many early animation characters all over the world had larger eyes than you might have considered. The early sketches of Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, for instance, have larger eyes than most current sketches of the characters do. Because Tezuka Osamu’s Astro Boy became so incredibly famous, both in Japan and outside of the country, the style was used by other Japanese artists in the years to come. While many things about the anime style as a whole have changed over the years, those eyes give anime away every single time.

ANIPOP 6

The Facial Expressions Almost every anime character you encounter has exaggerated facial expressions. For example, if a character gets angry, you might notice pulsing veins on their faces. Characters who are embarrassed usually end up sweating in the scene, with massive drops forming on the foreheads. Characters who experience surprise will offer an expression that lasts several seconds, far longer than one might expect. It is through these facial expressions that anime creators hope to provide some of the emotional depth that is considered classic to anime.

The Archetypes Another thing many people notice about the anime style is that most character types have a certain appearance. If a character is supposed to be cute, they have the typical eyes accented by rounded cheeks and facial features that tend to be a little crowded. If a character is supposed to be an idiot, everything about them is round. They have a rounded body shape, a really round head, and tiny little round eyes. If, on the other hand, a character is wicked, you’ll see almost all of the characteristic roundness disappear. The lines will become very sharp, and the eyes, again, will be much smaller. Anime art has fascinated many over the years, and while the methods behind anime art have changed in recent years, with I suspect many creations now computer assisted Free Reprint Articles, the characteristic art style remains the same. ◊

Exaggeration is the key to humor, as seen in their web comic series KAPTA Basically a Joke By: Nash Nalzaro

decided to interview my younger twin sisters since they were heavily inspired by anime cartoons for their art style. They both thought this was a joke but noticed how I was pretty serious, they agreed to a Q&A and here they tell me about how KAPTA came to be.

Tell me about yourselves, What are your hobbies? We are Reid and Leif Nalzaro and we are the creators of KAPTA which is hosted on Tapastic, a website dedicated to sharing different individuals comics online. Our hobbies are usually dedicated to updating our comics, practice sketching both traditionally and digitally.

When did you start drawing? What are your main influences? We both started drawing ever since we first watched an anime cartoon, the first few we've both seen are either Teen Titans, Inyuyasha and Tokyo Mew Mew. Also watching our older sister draw.

"Being Mediocre since 1999" -Reid Nalzaro

Reid: My major influences is artists called Susho and Drawkill. I get inspired by these two and I sort of copy them in way of understanding how they draw certain things like hands, eyes or animals.

Leif: My major influence is Nafisah Tung, a really good digital artist whom I found on Tumblr, the way he draws people has influenced me to draw different body types and appreciate his style.

What is KAPTA? When did you start this comic?

ta p

as tic

How many followers in general do you have on social media? Which sites give the most feedback?

KAPTA is a joke series pertaining to taking stereotypes of anime and manga where all the characters are a hybrid of animals and humans, called “Furries”, and place them in a stereotypical setting like high school. The web comic contains exaggerated jokes of typical character designs and stereotypes with the added bonus of super obvious plotlines.

On Tapastic we have 2.6K followers, on Deviantart we both range from 1,000K to 3,185K and on Tumblr 1,700 - 10K and Instagram we have the smallest audience with around 100 followers. Tumblr followers give us the most feedback back.

The comic literally started in the summer of 2013 where (Reid) was really bored and decided to play a facebook app called “Party Town” where you could create your own character and stroll about town. While I was making my character I shifted through the randomizer and came up with the funniest looking icon, I laughed for so long and I decided right then and there to name him “Sugoi” and start a comic with him in it. Leif decided to help me because it was funny and she helps me out a lot, I can get different perspectives and ideas on how the story should be written out. Plus we help each other out on each other’s strengths and weaknesses for drawing and writing.

Overall very positive, some are usually just rude or come off as being rude so we either delete it or ignore it.

Are comments generally positive or negative?

How much time does it take to create a page? Chapter? For a page it takes 2-3 days and for a whole chapter 1 and a half a month. Overall we try to update a new chapter monthly. ◊

Who does what? Leif does all the concepts of how a page should be laid out and different character designs and the storyboards. Reid writes out the story and dialogue. Both of us work to digitally produce it.

How do you manage your time from personal, school, family and friends? *laughter* We sacrifice ALL of our time, in most cases. Depends on what is more important that week. From the start we gradually sacrificed a lot of time but now we just gradually work on small bits and pieces.

“We really like creating these series, we finally got to start our own comic” and it’s good practice in the future to put in our portfolios where we have digital experience and knowledge towards making a comic and digitally producing it.

Do you see yourselves writing and continuing this comic in the future?

We will probably finish the entirety of this series in 2 or 3 years time maybe even rehash it in the future, we aren’t super serious on this series. We hopefully want to start a new fresh comic that is original and unique to our taste.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Review

Ava l Xboiable o n x & P 360 S2

A very precise and detailed review for the new game Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

Ready for Round 2? By: Heidi Kemps

Chances are that if you're interested in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (P4AU), you fall into one of two camps of players: the folks who cherish competitive fighting games and their intricate mechanics, or the crew who adores the characters and intricate storyline of the Persona role-playing games. The original Persona 4 Arena (P4A) was a successful attempt at marrying what both of these groups would want in a game, and much like the original releases of Persona 3/4 (and seemingly the whole fighting game genre), the game has now been granted a vastly expanded release in Persona 4 Ultimax.

ANIPOP 12

Atlus and co-developer Arc System Works have gone out of their way to make sure that this new edition comes with enough new content to justify the asking price. For starters, the game features six new characters out of the box: two versions of antagonist Sho Minazuki (with and without persona); a newly combat-ready Rise Kujikawa; and Junpei, Yukari, and Ken from Persona 3. Three more characters will be made available at a later date (though at the time of this writing, only Adachi and Marie are available, both of which are free for a limited time and $5 individually at a later date). In addition to this, the majority of the cast gains a "shadow" character mode that dramatically alters key elements of the fighting

engine. Besides the significant roster expansion, the game features a completely new and quite long story mode that picks up after the events of P4A, along with a challenge mode called Golden Arena. Golden Arena is a particularly fun time-killer, and one that will remind series veterans of scaling the tower of Tartarus. In this mode, you trek through dungeons filled with opponents, besting them in order to level up and boost stats that increase your fighting prowess. Even the level-up screen is a neat throwback to the presentation of the original games. Golden Arena is similar to survival modes in other fighting games in that you have to beat opponents back-to-back, but you

don’t have to worry about energy management. The ability to customize your character with stats of your picking and helpful skills is a nice strategic element. Online play also sees some noteworthy improvements. Enhanced player profiles and room-searching carry across both versions, but one particularly cool interface is a PlayStation 3 exclusive: a virtual arcade. Here, you can create a cute little Persona-themed avatar and search for matches and lobbies by trotting around various familiar environments refashioned to look like arcades, seeing information about the matches in progress and the players therein. It’s a nifty feature that functions well for the purpose of finding sparring partners, though it’s a shame it’s only available on one platform. For competitive fighting fans, however, the biggest draws are the new characters and the various gameplay additions. As you might expect, the existing cast has seen some tweaks and additions to their movesets, though the most significant change to the base game is the addition of "shadow" versions for most characters. Shadows control similarly to the original characters, but lose the ability to burst out of lengthy combos or as a last-ditch meterfilling attack. In its place is a frenzy, which gradually drains the meter used to execute super moves, but allows unlimited uses of said moves while it's active, which can dramatically alter a character's offensive capabilities. The new characters are varied, and each brings something unique to the table. Sho comes in two flavors: with and without persona. The latter variety exchanges the benefits that persona-

wielding for some fierce strikes, while the former plays in a more orthodox style. Yukari is a projectile-heavy zoning character who utilizes distance attacking to frustrate foes. Ken and Koromaru tag-team to defeat opponents with long-range normal, youthful determination, and fierce animal instinct--that is, unless Koromaru gets KO'ed, since he’s got his own separate health bar. Rise has unique skills like sending out explosive musical notes and putting opponents in a "scanned" state that alters certain attack properties, while Junpei can transform the arena into his own private baseball field, earning massive buffs by hitting with certain attacks and scoring runs. Adachi can play with powerful buffs and status ailments, and Marie works with various trap setups to keep foes on their toes while working with a unique weather mechanic for boosting attacks and recovering health. `If you're more into Persona games than into one-on-one fighting, however,

"the main draw here is the extensive story mode" which consists of two distinctly different episodes--P4 and P3--which highlight the characters from each respective game. While the presentation is much the same as it was in the original P4A's story mode--text and voiceover accompanying stills showcase what’s happening, and are punctuated by actual player-controlled fighting--the flow has changed significantly. Instead of each character having a distinct route of varied length through story mode (and

some characters' stories unlocking others), the viewpoint here switches amongst the entire cast throughout. This means you experience events from the vantage point of--and fighting as-multiple characters. (Also of note: if you really aren't confident in your brawling skills, you can opt to the have the computer fight for you in this mode, essentially turning story mode into a visual novel.) The mode is uncommonly in-depth and lengthy, encompassing many hours' worth of text, dialogue, and fighting across the two different stories. Story mode is enjoyable, but it isn't as engaging as the previous game's. Sho Minazuki isn't as interesting or nuanced a central figure as Labrys was in P4A, and you never get the opportunity to delve deeply into his character and motivations. The lengthy lead-up to the final revelations and confrontations here contain a lot of repetitive situations and dialogue. Yes, the power of bonds with others was a central theme in Personas 3 and 4, but the way this theme is constantly brought up here made me want to make like the P4 crew, poke my head into the television, and shout "I get it already." When the characters are interacting with each other, however, they're an absolute delight, and it's always great to see how they react to meeting faces that are new to them (but familiar to us). Ken, Yukari, and Junpei--who are all newcomers to the fighting side of things--receive a great deal of development that shows us where their lives led them post-Persona 3. An epilogue shown after finishing both stories puts a period at the end of many characters' stories, leading the way for the upcoming Persona 5. ◊ ANIPOP 13

M

y gorgeous friend whom I have both known for a few years and admired from behind the scenes has always piqued my interest about her current wear. I finally gained the courage to ask for a quick interview on her unique taste. Winnie gracefully agreed, here she talks about how she came about her own unique style.

➾Tell me about yourself, what are your hobbies? I’m a Chinese-Canadian high school senior. My hobbies include making art, listening to music, and reading. Japanese culture has always had a very large influence in my life, and it definitely comes across in my hobbies. For example, anime inspired me to start drawing when I was 5, and I listen to Japanese music and read manga regularly.

ANIPOP 15

INTERVIEW ➵How would you describe your fashion style? Is it a mix of different styles or entirely your own? I follow a lot of different Japanese street styles, namely Lolita, Otome, Fairy-kei, Cult party, and Larme-kei. My fashion sense is sort of an experimental melting pot of all these styles. These aesthetics don’t get a lot of representation in Canada, which means I don’t really have any real life inspiration for my own style. I do a lot of internet research to see how others coordinate these styles, but I often try to mix and match my different tastes together to achieve something new

In 2 years, I’ve collected almost an entire wardrobe of Lolita!

➵Do you wear your current style as an everyday wear, for special occasions or whenever you feel like it? All three, to be honest. However, Lolita is harder for me to wear everyday because it’s so extravagant, so it’s usually reserved for more special occasions or when I need a morale booster. Being a student oftentimes makes it too hassle-some to be so dressedup for school, but I do hope that in the future I have more opportunities to dress up whenever I like.

➵Who or What influenced your fashion style? I dive into the Japanese fashion magazine “Popteen” regularly, it helps me keep inspired by the different unique styles and looks of today. Lolita icons Midori Fukasawa and Misako Aoki. Lots of western J-fashionistas on Tumblr, Facebook, and blogs that I visit. I also do a bit of windowshopping on Taobao.com

➵When did you start wearing your current style? Did you gradually start wearing your current clothes (bit by bit) or just fully came out in full attire? I’ve always loved Japanese “kawaii” culture and starting following the Lolita subculture when I was 11. Lolita was really difficult for me to obtain at the time because it was expensive, it could only be bought from overseas, and it required many items like socks and blouses to make a “proper” outfit. So for many years, I just silently drooled over Lolita on the internet and bought less expensive clothes that fit into other aesthetics, like Fairy-kei, that I could easily find in person. When I was 15, I bought my first Lolita dress and sort of just burst into the whole look because I’d dreamed of wearing Lolita for so long. ANIPOP 16

➵Are you usually complimented or receive negative comments about your current wear? I’ve been sneered at or cat-called a couple of times when I’m dressed up at school or in public, but the general response is very positive. I often receive compliments about how “cute” and “unique” my style is, even from people who I’ve never talked to before. Although it’s not the reason I wear what I wear, it brings me a lot of happiness to hear those things!

➵Do you buy your clothes or do you make them? If you do buy them what’s the usual cost of a full outfit? I really wish I had the patience and talent to make clothes! But no, I buy everything that I wear. Lolita/otome outfits are the most expensive, and can range anywhere from $150-$350 (most of my outfits are about $250-ish). All of my other outfits are usually about $100.

➵Do you give yourself a separate persona while wearing your current style? Sometimes I find myself being more conscious of the way I act so as not to... disgrace my clothes? Haha. Wearing special outfits actually gives me confidence in the way I carry myself; I can be really timid sometimes, but going out in public dressed like a giant ball of cotton candy is a great conversation starter. But in general, no, I am the same person. My clothes are a part of me, not some sort of mask.

...Lolita, Otome, Fairy-kei, Cult party, and Larme-kei. My fashion sense is sort of an experimental melting pot of all of these...

➵Do you see yourself wearing this in the future, a continued practice? Absolutely. I think for most people who are interested in fashion, they think of it as a hobby. Having been so invested into Lolita, Fairy-kei, and other fashions for many years, I can honestly say that’s how it started for me, but it’s become something more. I’ve gained a lot of confidence to be who I am and wear what I want without shame. It’s sort of interwoven itself into a lifestyle practice for me and I can see it being like this for many years into the future.

➵Do you go to anime conventions? Do you enjoy it? Do you cosplay? I love anime conventions! I go to at least one every single year. It is a great opportunity to meet other Japanese culture/fashion enthusiasts and to not feel so isolated about our “peculiar hobbies”. There are also always a lot of great artists/ vendors who cater to the “kawaii” crowd. Although I’ve been going to conventions for 3 years, I’ve only cosplayed once. I just prefer wearing J-fashion more than cosplaying, but I do really appreciate the artistry of cosplaying.

ANIPOP 17

INTERVIEW

➵General Pros + Con’s to wearing your outfit?

Pros:

-Extremely fun (coordinating outfits/accessories, doing my makeup, etc.) -Makes me feel really beautiful -Confidence booster/challenges me to be less shy -Conversation starter/ compliments from strangers -Making friends with people who follow the same subcultures (e.g. Lolitas from online often have meet-ups for afternoon tea or shopping)

ANIPOP 18

Cons:

-Some clothes are expensive and/or difficult to find -Takes long to get ready -Sneers/taunts from ignorant people -Can be inconvenient for certain activities (physical activity+Lolita=an absolute disaster) ◊
