Art Terms Installation
An installation is a type of art that is composed of multiple items Bruce Munro within a physical space. Artists who make installations often incorporate images, three-dimensional objects, video, and/or sound to create a space for the viewers to experience their art.
Foreshortening
A technique used in painting and sculpture to suggest that figures, parts of the body, or other forms are shown receding from the viewer. This method requires the artist to distort the subject being represented, but this manipulation makes it appear more realistic.
Jeff Danley
Thornton Dial
Assemblage
A work of art that is made of a combination of threedimensional objects brought together for aesthetic and conceptual reasons. Artists often use “found” objects from junkyards, memorabilia, and personal items in their compositions. While each object may be carefully chosen, the significance lies in what the artist presents through juxtapositions.
Giclée (zhee-klay)
Encaustic
Giclée prints are made with high-resolution images and archival-quality inks which are printed onto photo paper or canvas. The giclée printing process provides accurate color and highly detailed images. Artists often reproduce their works this way because it yields high-quality images that can be printed in any size and in many formats.
A medium made by dissolving colored pigment into hot wax. The thick liquid is then applied with metal tools or special brushes onto any David Douglas surface the artist chooses. Encaustic paint has been used on wood for centuries, including in Egyptian mummy portraits from 100 AD. Contemporary artists have explored the medium on paper, in collage, with photography, and on pottery. This technique creates a translucent and brilliant effect.

Trompe l’oeil (tromploy)
This term is French for “fool the eye” and refers to a photo realistic style of painting. Trompe l’oeil paintings are Michael Theise intended to deceive the viewer into believing that they are viewing a real three-dimensional object— not a representation of an object.

Mixed Media
Any work of art that combines more than one medium is called “mixed media.” Collage is a type of mixed-media work that includes various materials such as paint, ink, and three-dimensional objects on a single panel. Mixed media can be used to describe sculpture, too; for example, a work made of bronze and marble or cardboard and fiber. Note: Multi-media is a much broader term that describes a work that blends visual and nonvisual elements.

This has been an exciting year for public art in Nashville. It brought the addition of many important new works of art. In particular, Reflection by Lawrence Argent in Shelby Park is a playful yet sophisticated addition to the public art collection. Referencing the former amusement park and the expansive wildlife, Reflection explores Shelby Park’s past, present, and future. The mirrored quality of the mockingbird parallels its natural “mimicking” qualities while reflecting a new vista within the park. The bird, perched trophy-like on a piece of carved granite, reflects the negative of the opposing wall, which is carved with a swirling motion that terminates in a hole, suggesting curiosity and passage.
Kevin Berry, Magnolia Shelters
Dahlquist’s Thread is made up of more than 150 steel panels symbolizing quilt squares, patterns, threads, and knots. The artwork was inspired by quilt squares created during community workshops at Hadley Park Community Center in 2011. A stainless steel ‘thread’ weaves through the artwork and across the bridge, symbolically connecting two formerly separated neighborhoods and cultural areas. In addition, Dahlquist designed two transit shelters on the Park Plaza side of the bridge, which complement the bridge artwork by incorporating knot and thread symbols as well as a large sewing needle. Kevin Berry’s Magnolia Shelters strengthen the bridge’s overall theme of connectivity. The artwork is directly inspired by iconic elements found in both Centennial and Hadley Park. The transit shelter design is meant to reflect a sense of place and is intended to be integrated into the surrounding environment.

Music City Center This year marks the opening of Nashville’s new state-of-the-art convention center, the Music City Center. In addition to dramatic architecture, environmentally sustainable features, and an abundance of natural light, the center is home to a carefully curated, magnificent art collection. A committee of Nashville artists and professionals worked in conjunction with Music City Center operations staff and art consultants to achieve the right balance of works. The collection includes eight monumental commissioned pieces and more than 80 acquired works from 48 artists. Of those, 44 are from Tennessee and 31 from Davidson County. Not only does the collection showcase a broad spectrum of artistic media, it reflects the city’s diverse heritage while highlighting Nashville’s progressive and entrepreneurial spirit. Located in the heart of downtown Nashville, the new facility is a short walk to the Ryman Auditorium and the Broadway honky-tonks, venues that have launched thousands of careers and helped generate the city’s nickname, Music City USA. The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame will be housed in the 6th Avenue lobby. The Music City Center is located at 201 5th Avenue, South, 615-401-1400. www.nashvillemusiccitycenter.com
