SERGEANT EARLY’S DREAM Choreography by Christopher Bruce Music by British, Irish and American Folk Composers Staged by Dawn Scannell Rehearsal Assistant Sean Kelly Lighting Recreated by Christina R. Giannelli based on the original by John B. Read Scenic and Costume Design by Walter Nobbe
“Sergeant Early’s Dream is set to British, Irish and American folk songs. Woven into the piece is a theme connected with migration from the old world to the new, and a feeling of sadness at leaving home and losing touch with old roots. However, people take with them threads of their old culture which develop on their own. As the ballet progresses, there is little of this influence at work, but most of the numbers recall folklore of the old world, re-enacting the life, loves and tragedies of people from the past.” – Christopher Bruce, Choreographer

UNDER THE LIGHTS Choreography by Christopher Stuart Music by Johnny Cash, Amy Stroup and Trent Dabbs Music Performed by Sugar + The Hi-Lows Lighting Design by Scott Leathers Costume Design by Billy Ditty Scenic Design by Scott Leathers “I’ll just keel over and die on the stage, under the lights, with my band and my family around me… That’s every performer’s dream, you know.” – Johnny Cash (Cash the Autobiography by Johnny Cash with Patrick Carr; used by permission from HarperOne Publishing) “Cash’s music speaks to me. It’s straight, true and honest, but he took risks. He didn’t let anyone tell him who he should or shouldn’t be and I aspire to do that with my choreography – to challenge myself to do new things and not just what society expects of me. I want to push the envelope. I want people to be affected by my work. And I think that choreographing to Cash’s iconic music is the perfect way to accomplish that.” – Christopher Stuart, Choreographer Nashville Ballet and Christopher Stuart would like to sincerely thank John Carter Cash for his interest, support and involvement in bringing this project to life.

NASHVILLE BALLET STAFF, LEADERSHIP AND GUESTS PAUL VASTERLING, Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling’s artistic career begin at age 10 when he started studying piano, then expanded at age 16 when he started dancing. From this start, Mr. Vasterling landed at Nashville Ballet where he became a company dancer, teacher, ballet master and choreographer. He stepped into the role of Artistic Director of Nashville Ballet in 1998, and was promoted to CEO for the ballet in the spring of 2010, at the board’s request. His choreography maneuvers between classical full-length story ballets, contemporary one-acts set to the music of local artists and everywhere in between. He has a particular penchant for collaborating with nationally and internally renowned composers, songwriters and institutions such as Nashville’s own Bluebird Café, Ben Folds, Matthew Perryman Jones, Fisk Jubilee Singers and others. His artistry as a storyteller has led him to create pieces such as Dracula, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan and, most recently, Layla and the Majnun. Beyond his own choreography, Mr. Vasterling has expanded the company’s repertoire to include works by Salvatore Aiello, George Balanchine, James Canfield, Lew Christensen, Twyla Tharp and Jirí Kylián, among many others. In addition, he has edited and updated classic productions of Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Loyola University, Mr. Vasterling has set a new standard for arts development. Under his leadership as CEO, the company’s operating budget has doubled and Nashville Ballet became the first local performing arts organization to purchase its own building. He oversaw a capital campaign to raise $5.8 million to renovate and reopen as The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet in 2015. He has transformed a troupe of 12 professional dancers into a company of 24, and his commitment to developing the dancers of tomorrow inspired him to establish a second pre-professional company of 35 dancers. Mr. Vasterling has shaped Nashville Ballet into a company high on artistry and dramatic power as well as commanding technical ability and virtuosity. LISA DIXON FRENCH, COO Lisa Dixon French recently moved to Nashville following a successful tenure as Executive Director of the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra. While in Portland, Mrs. French led a highly inclusive strategic planning process that focused the organization on service to the community by enriching lives through music. Mrs. French also strengthened the orchestra’s financial stability, with increased contributed and earned income, increased endowment funds and five years of balanced operating budgets that grew from $2.5 million to $3.3 million from 2010-2015. Originally from Edina, Minn., Mrs. French went to Portland from her role as the Chief Operating Officer of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. French is also a graduate of an executive level orchestra leadership program through the League of American Orchestras. This intensive one-year fellowship program included residencies with the Boston Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Memphis Symphony and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Mrs. French graduated from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, N.Y.) in clarinet performance and music education, and received an Arts Leadership Program Certificate. Mrs. French has also served on the Board of the Maine Association of Nonprofits and the Board of Visitors for the University of Southern Maine. SHARYN MAHONEY, Director of Artistic Operations Sharyn Mahoney joined Nashville Ballet as a company dancer in 1989. Since her retirement from performing, she has continued to work with the organization as School of Nashville Ballet faculty member, Artistic Associate, Director of Education and Community Engagement, Ballet Master and currently, Director of Artistic Operations. During her nine years as Director of Education and Community Engagement, Mrs. Mahoney worked closely with Artistic Director Paul Vasterling to develop and fine-tune NB2, Nashville Ballet’s official second company. While in that same position, she initiated the ballet’s Community Engagement program, which has grown tremendously and now proudly reaches more than 43,000 children and families each year. As Director of Artistic Operations, she works closely with Mr. Vasterling to supervise the company’s artistic endeavors, overseeing the company and Community Engagement. TIMOTHY RINEHART YEAGER, Ballet Master A native of Washington, Pa., Timothy Yeager received his dance training at Sally Miller Dance, Third Street Music School Settlement, Syracuse University and North Carolina School of the Arts. Mr. Yeager spent 10 seasons with the North Carolina Dance Theatre where he achieved the rank of principal artist. While there, he starred in ballets by Salvatore Aiello, Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Agnes De Mille, David Parsons, Peter Pucci and Paul Taylor, among others. He has also performed as a guest artist with The Dancers Ensemble, Chautauqua Ballet Company and Tampa Ballet. Mr. Yeager has taught master classes and led intensive arts residencies throughout the eastern United States. Before joining the staff of Nashville Ballet in 2001, he served as the Ballet Master with the Moving Poets Theatre of Dance in Charlotte, N.C. From 2003 to 2010, he was also Ballet Master for Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, a summer season company located in Asheville, N.C. Mr. Yeager has the honor of being a repetiteur of the Salvatore Aiello Trust and has been staging Aiello’s ballets since 1996. ALLISON ZAMORSKI, Ballet Master Originally from Virginia, Allison Zamorski began her formal dance training with the Virginia Ballet Theatre. She was an honors graduate from the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts High School Dance Program, majoring in both ballet and modern dance. In 1999, after being awarded a scholarship with School of Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski relocated to Nashville to train under the direction of Adam Sage. She danced in NB2, Nashville Ballet’s second company, developing her skills as an apprentice, and was promoted to full company member in 2002 under Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Ms. Zamorski danced professionally with Nashville Ballet for four years and had multiple ballets set on her, including Vasterling’s Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. After retiring as a dancer in 2006, Ms. Zamorski continued her expression of dance as a faculty member with School of Nashville Ballet, teaching a variety of dance classes to children and adults including ballet, pointe, modern, character, improvisation and repertory. She has worked extensively with the Community Engagement program, exposing approximately 35,000 Middle Tennessee residents to the art of dance. Now, as Ballet Master with Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski assists in the staging and rehearsals of various main company performances. She also oversees all NB2 performances, rehearsals and schedules, as well as youth casts in Nashville Ballet productions. Also, Ms. Zamorski has the distinct honor of being entrusted to set the works of Paul Vasterling in Nashville and throughout the country.

CHRISTOPHER BRUCE, Guest Choreographer (Sergeant Early’s Dream) Christopher Bruce, CBE, is a British choreographer and performer who has been hailed by London’s The Daily Telegraph as “the Nureyev of contemporary ballet.” In April 1994, Mr. Bruce assumed the artistic directorship of The Rambert Dance Company, Britain’s most prestigious contemporary dance troupe. At the time of his appointment, The London Times hailed him as an artist who “could change the face of British dance.” His position as one of Britain’s leading choreographers, working with both classical and contemporary companies worldwide, was acknowledged in March 1993 when he received the International Theatre Institute Award for excellence in international dance. This followed a host of other awards throughout a rich career, including the first Evening Standard Award for Dance in 1974 due to his contribution to British dance, both as a performer and as a choreographer. In 1996, he received the Evening Standard Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement in Ballet. In June 1998, he was named a Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honors. As a choreographer, Mr. Bruce was undoubtedly stimulated by the variety and experimentation of Ballet Rambert in the 1960s, creating over 20 works for the company. Between 1975 and 1987, he was first associate director and then, as he was increasingly in demand internationally as a choreographer, associate choreographer for Rambert. During his career, he has choreographed for a wide range of productions including musicals, plays for the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, operas, television and video. Although his productions have been mounted throughout the world, Mr. Bruce has developed special relationships with a number of companies, including Houston Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theater, Royal Danish Ballet, Cullberg Ballet, English National Ballet, Gulbenkian Ballet and Le Ballet du Grand Theatre de Gen. Among his best known works are Cruel Garden, Ghost Dances, Sergeant Early’s Dream, Intimate Pages, The Dream is Over, Swansong and Rooster, all of which have been televised. He is currently the Associate Choreographer at Houston Ballet. CHRISTOPHER STUART, Guest Choreographer (Under the Lights) Christopher Stuart, originally from Sandy Hook, Conn., has always had a niche for choreographing. His vast experiences as a dancer and performer helped him articulate his choreographic voice through improvising and exploring different forms of movement. Embarking upon his journey as a choreographer has allowed him to further express himself in a free and limitless way. Mr. Stuart has created pieces for Nashville Ballet 2, Nashville Ballet, Quixotic Fusion and Ballet Arkansas. In Nashville Ballet’s 2012 Emergence performance, he collaborated with ALIAS Chamber Ensemble and Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. In 2012, he choreographed and staged Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s Macbeth. For the past three seasons, Mr. Stuart has created pieces for Nashville Ballet’s annual Ballet Ball with music performed by Holly Williams, Kellie Pickler, Clare Bowen and John Oates. For Nashville Ballet’s 2014 Attitude series, he created Under the Lights, a full-length work to the music of Johnny Cash performed by Sugar + the Hi Lows about which ArtsNash said, “Stuart’s choreography proved to be a seamless blend of classical, modern and popular dance styles.” Mr. Stuart was a finalist in Ballet Arkansas’ first annual Visions Choreographic Competition. In 2015, Mr. Stuart had the pleasure of choreographing a piece to the music of the world renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers. Most recently, he was awarded a choreographic Fellowship from the New York Choreographic Institute. Mr. Stuart has been dancing with Nashville Ballet for the last 14 years and has risen to the rank of principal. DAWN SCANNELL, Guest Stager (Sergeant Early’s Dream) Dawn Scannell grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and received her training from Victoria Leigh, Ruth Petrinovic and James Franklin. She joined Houston Ballet in 1985 and rose to the rank of principal dancer. After retiring in 2001, Ms. Scannell rejoined Houston Ballet as ballet mistress in 2006, staging Ben Stevenson’s Don Quixote. Throughout her career, Ms. Scannell’s repertoire included leading roles with attention to and detail in both classical and contemporary works – from Ben Stevenson’s Swan Lake to Christopher Bruce’s Swanson. Ms. Scannell has had the privilege of working with many esteemed choreographers such as Sir Kenneth MacMillan, James Kudelka, John McFall, Ronald Hynd, Stanton Welch, Ben Stevenson, Jiri Kylián, Christopher Bruce, Trey McIntyre, Lila York and Helgi Tomasson. SEAN MAURICE KELLY, Guest Rehearsal Assistant (Sergeant Early’s Dream) Sean Maurice Kelly is currently the Resident Director for the first national tour of the Broadway show An American in Paris, for which he was previously the Associate Choreographer. Mr. Kelly is a former Principal Dancer and Ballet Master for Houston Ballet, where he is still periodically a Guest Ballet Master. He has choreographed two ballets for the company. He danced the leading roles in the company’s full-length classical ballets, such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Manon and others. In addition, he had the pleasure of dancing a very mixed repertoire including works by Ben Stevenson, George Balanchine, Christopher Bruce, Paul Taylor, Jiri Kylián, Glen Tetley and Stanton Welch. Mr. Kelly has been involved with numerous musicals. He was in the Broadway company of Twyla Tharp’s Movin’ Out. He was also on the tour where he was both a swing and dance captain, eventually serving as Resident Director. He staged the production on London‘s West End. He was the Resident Choreographer for three companies of Billy Elliot the Musical. He was also a swing and dance supervisor on Swing the Musical. He has worked regularly with Diablo Ballet over the years where he was a frequent guest artist and choreographer. He was recently the Associate Director of Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Dance, where he toured extensively internationally. He was asked by Mr. Stevenson to set his Cleopatra on both the Boston Ballet and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. He recently staged Christopher Bruce’s Sergeant Early’s Dream for Sarasota Ballet and Mr. Bruce’s timeless Ghost Dances for Houston Ballet. Mr. Kelly won Best Partner at the International Ballet Competition in Helsinki, Finland. He is also a freelance teacher in New York City and elsewhere.
