APPALACHIAN SPRING Choreography by Paul Vasterling Music by Aaron Copland* Music Direction by Nathan Fifield Lighting Design by Scott Leathers Costume Design by Holly Hynes Scenic Design by Paul Vasterling Choreographer’s Note: In a conversation about Appalachian Spring, my friend Mitchell Korn observed the irony that a work of art that is considered quintessential Americana was created by a woman (Martha Graham), a gay Jewish man (Aaron Copland) and a Japanese designer (Isamu Noguchi). Three people who may have been considered “the other” created a beautiful work that sounds to us today, 73 years later, like America. My new interpretation is about otherness, family and community. It is dedicated to the memory of my mother, Patricia Vasterling.

Simple Gifts by Joseph Brackett (1797–1882) ‘Tis the gift to be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free, ‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, ‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight. When true simplicity is gained, To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed, To turn, turn will be our delight, ‘Til by turning, turning we come ‘round right.

Appalachian Spring premiered March 24, 2017 at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. *By arrangement with Boosey & Hawkes, Inc., publisher and copyright owner

SEVEN DEADLY SINS WORLD PREMIERE Concept and Choreography by Christopher Stuart Music by Ten Out of Tenn Music for Orchestra Composed and Arranged by K.S. Rhoads Orchestra Direction by Nathan Fifield Lighting Design by Christopher Stuart and Scott Leathers Costume Design by Maria Silver Scenic Design by Christopher Stuart and Scott Leathers Choreographer’s Note: We are all capable of indulging in sin. Every day we are faced with continuous temptations, whether large or small. Some days we are able to fight temptation, other days it gets the best of us. In the end, it comes down to the choices we make. Seven Deadly Sins examines the battles we face each day, the inevitable slip-ups that we’ll make as flawed humans and the hopeful path to redemption.

NASHVILLE BALLET STAFF, LEADERSHIP AND GUESTS PAUL VASTERLING, Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling’s artistic career begin at age 10 when he started studying piano, then expanded at age 16 when he started dancing. From this start, Mr. Vasterling landed at Nashville Ballet where he became a company dancer, teacher, ballet master and choreographer. He stepped into the role of Artistic Director of Nashville Ballet in 1998, and was promoted to CEO for the ballet in the spring of 2010, at the board’s request. His choreography maneuvers between classical full-length story ballets, contemporary one-acts set to the music of local artists and everywhere in between. He has a particular penchant for collaborating with nationally and internally renowned composers, songwriters and institutions such as Nashville’s own Bluebird Cafe, Ben Folds, Matthew Perryman Jones, Fisk Jubilee Singers and others. His artistry as a storyteller has led him to create pieces such as Dracula, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan and Layla and the Majnun. Beyond his own choreography, Mr. Vasterling has expanded the company’s repertoire to include works by Salvatore Aiello, George Balanchine, James Canfield, Lew Christensen, Twyla Tharp and Jirí Kylián, among many others. In addition, he has edited and updated classic productions of Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. In 2004, Mr. Vasterling received a Fulbright Scholarship that enabled him to work with three different companies in Argentina, paving the way for Nashville Ballet’s tour there a year later. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Loyola University, Mr. Vasterling has set a new standard for arts development. Under his leadership as CEO, the company’s operating budget has doubled and Nashville Ballet became the first local performing arts organization to purchase its own building. He oversaw a capital campaign to raise $5.8 million to renovate and reopen as The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet in 2015. He has transformed a troupe of 12 professional dancers into a company of 24, and his commitment to developing the dancers of tomorrow inspired him to establish a second pre-professional company of over 20 dancers. Mr. Vasterling has shaped Nashville Ballet into a company high on artistry and dramatic power as well as commanding technical ability and virtuosity. LISA DIXON FRENCH, COO Lisa Dixon French recently moved to Nashville following a successful tenure as Executive Director of the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra. While in Portland, Mrs. French led a highly inclusive strategic planning process that focused the organization on service to the community by enriching lives through music. Mrs. French also strengthened the orchestra’s financial stability, with increased contributed and earned income, increased endowment funds and five years of balanced operating budgets that grew from $2.5 million to $3.3 million from 2010-2015. Originally from Edina, Minn., Mrs. French went to Portland from her role as the Chief Operating Officer of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. French is also a graduate of an executive level orchestra leadership program through the League of American Orchestras. This intensive one-year fellowship program included residencies with the Boston Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Memphis Symphony and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Mrs. French graduated from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, N.Y.) in clarinet performance and music education, and received an Arts Leadership Program Certificate. Mrs. French has also served on the Board of the Maine Association of Nonprofits and the Board of Visitors for the University of Southern Maine. SHARYN MAHONEY, Director of Artistic Operations Sharyn Mahoney joined Nashville Ballet as a company dancer in 1989. Since her retirement from performing, she has continued to work with the organization as School of Nashville Ballet faculty member, Artistic Associate, Director of Education and Community Engagement, Ballet Master and currently, Director of Artistic Operations. During her nine years as Director of Education and Community Engagement, Mrs. Mahoney worked closely with Artistic Director Paul Vasterling to develop and fine-tune NB2, Nashville Ballet’s official second company. While in that same position, she initiated the ballet’s Community Engagement program, which has grown tremendously and now proudly reaches more than 43,000 children and families each year. As Director of Artistic Operations, she works closely with Mr. Vasterling to supervise the company’s artistic endeavors, overseeing the company and Community Engagement. TIMOTHY RINEHART YEAGER, Ballet Master A native of Washington, Pa., Timothy Yeager received his dance training at Sally Miller Dance, Third Street Music School Settlement, Syracuse University and North Carolina School of the Arts. Mr. Yeager spent 10 seasons with the North Carolina Dance Theatre where he achieved the rank of principal artist. While there, he starred in ballets by Salvatore Aiello, Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Agnes De Mille, David Parsons, Peter Pucci and Paul Taylor, among others. He has also performed as a guest artist with The Dancers Ensemble, Chautauqua Ballet Company and Tampa Ballet. Mr. Yeager has taught master classes and led intensive arts residencies throughout the eastern United States. Before joining the staff of Nashville Ballet in 2001, he served as the Ballet Master with the Moving Poets Theatre of Dance in Charlotte, N.C. From 2003 to 2010, he was also Ballet Master for Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, a summer season company located in Asheville, N.C. Mr. Yeager has the honor of being a repetiteur of the Salvatore Aiello Trust and has been staging Aiello’s ballets since 1996. ALLISON ZAMORSKI, Ballet Master Originally from Virginia, Allison Zamorski began her formal dance training with the Virginia Ballet Theatre. She was an honors graduate from the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts High School Dance Program, majoring in both ballet and modern dance. In 1999, after being awarded a scholarship with School of Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski relocated to Nashville to train under the direction of Adam Sage. She danced in NB2, Nashville Ballet’s second company, developing her skills as an apprentice, and was promoted to full company member in 2002 under Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Ms. Zamorski danced professionally with Nashville Ballet for four years and had multiple ballets set on her, including Vasterling’s Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. After retiring as a dancer in 2006, Ms. Zamorski continued her expression of dance as a faculty member with School of Nashville Ballet, teaching a variety of dance classes to children and adults including ballet, pointe, modern, character, improvisation and repertory. She has worked extensively with the Community Engagement program, exposing approximately 35,000 Middle Tennessee residents to the art of dance. Now, as Ballet Master with Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski assists in the staging and rehearsals of various main company performances. She also oversees all NB2 performances, rehearsals and schedules, as well as youth casts in Nashville Ballet productions. Also, Ms. Zamorski has the distinct honor of being entrusted to set the works of Paul Vasterling in Nashville and throughout the country.

TEN OUT OF TENN GUEST ARTISTS AMY STROUP Amy Stroup is a Boston-born, Abilene, Texas-raised independent artist living in Nashville who has had her songs featured on more than 30 TV shows including This Is Us, Parenthood, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead, as well as national ads for Calvin Klein, New Balance, Lexus and more. Ms. Stroup has released three digital EPs and one nationally distributed full-length solo record entitled Tunnel. She is the newest member of the Ten Out of Tenn tour, where she is one of 10 featured artists alongside Andrew Belle, Katie Herzig, Trent Dabbs and more. Recently, Ms. Stroup released a single called “This Is My Time” featured on NBC’s hit show This is Us that she penned with Mary Hooper, her creative partner and co-owner of their design boutique Milkglass Creative. Milkglass does artist branding and design for Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town, Ingrid Michaelson and Lori McKenna to name a few. BUTTERFLY BOUCHER Originally signed to the now-defunct but once mighty A&M records, Australian-born artist Butterfly Boucher’s 2004 debut Flutterby drew notable attention from David Bowie, Madonna, Ben Folds and Sarah McLachlan. Once she became independent, she spent 2011 producing fellow Aussie Missy Higgins’ album The ‘Ole Razzle Dazzle, touring as a bass player and vocalist with McLachlan, and working with her pop/rock trio Elle Macho. “Everything broadened when I allowed myself to go beyond just my solo music; collaborating with others has been key to keeping my own creativity bubbling as well as my sanity.” In 2013, Ms. Boucher’s debut album Flutterby turned 10 years old, and with a sense of celebration and a desire to acknowledge her fans that have supported her throughout those years, she decided to re-record Flutterby from scratch, this time inviting many of the musicians and artists she had met along the way. And so her fourth album Happy Birthday Flutterby was born. In 2014, Ruby Rose used Ms. Boucher’s “It Pulls Me Under” for her “Break Free” video that has garnered more than 27 million views on YouTube alone. Though she plans plenty of time to work with others, it is her own music that exposes the depth of her talent. Her previous albums Scary Fragile and Butterfly Boucher picked up songs for television. Stretching the gamut from sincere to playful, her smart pop inhabits a world of pure creativity – where fragility and force are complementary and indie rock accompanies heartfelt vulnerability. ERIN McCARLEY Creating a blend of pop influenced by alt-singer/songwriters such as Fiona Apple, Beck and Santigold, Erin McCarley mixes vintage synths and chopped up organic/electronic beats with playful and uplifting (yet often times an undertone of melancholy) lyrics. Ms. McCarley has made a name for herself as an emotive, fresh and powerful artist and songwriter embraced by her fans, the film and TV world, and respected industry alike. Ms. McCarley released her debut album Love, Save the Empty in 2009 at #82 on Billboard and her sophomore album My Stadium Electric in 2012 on Universal Republic Records. She has performed on David Letterman, Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson and toured extensively in the U.S. iTunes promoted her with Single of the Week twice. The film/TV world has embraced her music in many shows, movies and commercials such as Grey’s Anatomy, He’s Just Not That Into You, The Vampire Diaries, Dancing with the Stars, plus commercials for Victoria’s Secret, Soma and Kellogg. Receiving praise from the likes of the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and USA Today, she is currently releasing singles and videos from her upcoming independent release for 2017. GABE DIXON Gabe Dixon released his sophomore solo album Turns To Gold in April 2016, marking his first official collection as an independent artist, put out on his own Rolling Ball Records. Turns To Gold was featured in Rolling Stone, The Huffington Post, American Songwriter, Elmore Magazine, All Music, Relix Magazine, Indie Shuffle and more. Paste Magazine called it “heart-wrenchingly honest,” and No Depression said it was “simply an exceptional album” with “all the makings of a big breakthrough.” Mr. Dixon’s songs have been featured on ABC, CBS, NBC, CW and more, and his song “Find My Way” served as the song for the opening credits for the box office hit The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock. He’s appeared twice on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, as well as The Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Last Call with Carson Daly. KATIE HERZIG To put Katie Herzig in any sort of box is for it to be broken, as she continues to outdo herself with each new release. Her music is as intimate as it is epic – something that her listeners have come to expect. Ms. Herzig grew up in Fort Collins, Colo., but found her way to Nashville upon starting her solo career. Having released her last album Walk Though Walls in the spring of 2014, Ms. Herzig will release her sixth album this spring. She has performed at Bonnaroo, on VH1, toured both as a headliner and as support for artists such as Brandi Carlile, Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, The Fray and as a member of Ten Out of Tenn. She has had her music licensed for many film, TV and commercial uses, including more than 10 songs on Grey’s Anatomy. Her song “Free My Mind” reached top 20 on AAA radio. Ms. Herzig collaborated with RAC on their song “We Belong,” earning a lot of love from LA’s KCRW and the like. Ms. Herzig also co-produced songs on Ingrid Michaelson’s 2014 Lights Out album, including her single “Girls Chase Boys” as well as songs from her last album, It Doesn’t Have To Make Sense, including her single, “Hell No.” ASCAP awarded Ms. Herzig the Sammy Cahn Award for her song “Closest I Get.” Ms. Herzig’s new song “I Want to Make You Proud” was released February 3, 2017, with a video featuring footage from the Women’s March on Nashville.

TEN OUT OF TENN GUEST ARTISTS (CONT’D) K.S. RHOADS K.S. Rhoads is a singer/songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist from Nashville, Tenn. He has a prolific catalogue of songs, many of which have been heard in numerous television shows (Reign, Grey’s Anatomy, Transparent, Arrow), commercials (Apple, Coke, Levi’s, Expedia), film (The Little Prince, jOBS) and more. He has previously performed with and written for The Nashville Symphony, and just recently scored the animated series Paranormal Action Squad. As a producer he has worked with an array of artists including Kriss Allen, Fleurie, Jill Andrews, Aledo, Emily West and many more. He is a recipient of ASCAP’s prestigious Sammy Cahn Foundation award for lyricism, and has been an influential figure in Nashville’s independent music scene for more than 15 years. Seven Deadly Sins is his first time to score orchestra for Nashville Ballet. MATTHEW PERRYMAN JONES Matthew Perryman Jones has a voice that calls out with intensity, truth and emotion. Mr. Jones began his career in 1997 in Decatur, Ga., and then, after moving to Nashville to pursue music full time, he issued his first solo release, Nowhere Else But Here, in 2000. As American Songwriter describes, “Matthew’s voice ensnares listeners with a rare authenticity and gritty strength.” Mr. Jones’ songs have been featured in television shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Bones, Pretty Little Liars, NY Med, Flash Point, One Tree Hill, The Hills and Eli Stone, in the 2012 movie release What To Expect When You Are Expecting, and most recently in the trailer for Oscar winning film, Manchester by the Sea. In addition to Mr. Jones’ own headline tours, he has shared the bill with Katie Herzig, Matthew Mayfield and Joshua James, and has opened for such artists as Ingrid Michaelson, Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin and Paula Cole. Mr. Jones is also an original member of the nationally acclaimed Nashville collaborative artist group Ten Out of Tenn. TRENT DABBS While The Optimist marked the Mississippi native’s 10th solo record in 12 years, that is only one road on his artistic map. He is also half of Sugar + The Hi-Lows with Amy Stroup; co-founder of the Ten Out of Tenn artists’ collective and Ready Set Records with his wife Kristen; a sought-after co-writer for Ingrid Michaelson, Mat Kearney, Kacey Musgraves and others; and a producer for developing acts like Young Summer. Even still, though his songs have often appeared on Billboard charts, radio stations and television shows ranging from Parenthood to Nashville, his name is far from a household one. And that’s okay. “I just try to write the best songs,” he says, “and if they get placed then great, or if they make it on an album, well, even better.”
