Letter from Publisher & Editor Welcome once again music fans to Middle Tennessee! I hope you enjoy your stay and I would like to share some of my favorite spots, and also thank the staff of the Nashville Music Guide for all their hard work putting this issue together. Many thanks to Amanda Andrews, Jessica Andrews, Steve Kilgore, Jan Braun, and all our writer and advertisers. I would also like to thank all the publicists and music industry colleagues that have supported us through out the year and provided us with opportunities to share their news with invites to industry events and keeping us updated with press releases. For this issue, instead of picking one artist to spotlight for our cover, we decided to take a different approach and give you a little history about us. The twins on the front cover are Caylee and Stetson (My babies growing up so fast!) and they represent the new generation of fans that will be coming up with Nashville Music Guide. As you can see from our tag line, Nashville Music Guide has been around since 1995 - whether online or print - we have continued our journey of promoting the music that comes in and out of the Greater Nashville area. We have always prided ourselves in giving independents, new comers, legends, and more the opportunity to be heard and seen. We hope that you enjoy the editorial we have included this issue with some stories of our own as we have worked tirelessly to keep the stories coming. Thank you again for your continued support, Randy Rich

of 18 national fences and made the final turn of the 3-mile race unchallenged in what was supposed to be a highly competitive field. He won by a remarkable 16 lengths in front of a sun-drenched crowd of 25,000 at Percy Warner Park. Story by Amanda Andrews

Once again, thousands gathered to watch the best horses and jockeys race over hurdles and timbers, a tradition that dates back to 1941 during the Iroquois Steeplechase last month. On top of it being a spectacle, it’s the rite of passage of Spring and the official Nashville kick-off to Summer. Besides being one of the biggest socialite events of the year, Steeplechase raises money for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Since becoming a primary beneficiary in 1981, over $10 million has been given to the hospital. Jockey Sean McDermott was aboard Scorpiancer in the 76th running of the Iroquois Steeplechase, and there wasn’t another horse anywhere near them. Scorpiancer went on to clear the last three

Home grown in West Tennessee and migrating further south to Marietta, GA, blonde beauty Layne Smith is a quantitative songwriter and memorable vocalist as exhibited in her latest album release, Set Me On A Rock, which she describes as three-fourths country gospel and one-forth country. Layne defies categorization and acknowledges her song derivatives are a result of her love of country, gospel and bluegrass music. She is influenced by Patsy Cline, Lynn Anderson, Donna Fargo, Joan Baez, and Elvis Presley. She professes, Layne Smith is the former lead singer and songwriter for the band Out of Nazareth. She gets her country roots honestly, having grown up on a farm in rural West Tennessee. Her music is heart-felt and honest, digging deep into the shared emotions of farm life and church. The songs she writes defy category, ranging from old-school Country to Gospel and Bluegrass. She is a permanent member of the Music City Hayride, a Traditional Country variety theater show in Nashville TN. She is the Atlanta Society of Entertainers “Recording Artist of the Year for 2013. Tennessee welcomes home one of our own as Layne now appears as a regular guest on Music City Hayride on Saturday afternoons at the World Famous Texas Troubadour Theatre. She expresses heart felt and honest emotion with her energetic performances and, whether it is a cover song or self-written original, it will be a memorable experience. Things Change by Bobby Bare They say the more things change, the more they stay the same. One thing that has stayed with us is the talent and artistry of one of country music’s living legends, Bobby Bare. Things Change is the title of the new album from Bare, a Country Music Hall of Famer who has chalked up close to 60 Top Forty hits starting back in 1962. And now here he is, at age 82, out there still performing and promoting his new album. Changes are no stranger to Bare. In 1959, he wrote a song, titled “The All American Boy,” for his friend Bill Parsons, and Bare cut a demo of the song for Parsons who went on to record it. However, the record label preferred Bare’s demo version and that was the one they released, taking the song to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. But nobody thought to change the information on the label, so every copy went out printed with the artist’s name as Bill Parsons, rather than Bobby Bare.

I sp Shor lot to it’s d Shor of co mus

With who Mum Hors of th reall

Bare’s luck changed for the better when he was signed to RCA Victor by the legendary Chet Atkins who could spot talent when he heard it. His second RCA single, “Detroit City” – written by Mel Tillis and Danny Dill – won Bare a GRAMMY in 1964 for Best Country/Western Recording. It was the first of many hits, including “500 Miles Away From Home” and “Four Strong Winds.” There’s a new version of “Detroit City” on the new album, but again Bare goes for a change rather than a straight recreation of the smash hit: this time, Bare sings it as a duet with Chris Stapleton – who wasn’t even born when the original charted – and gives us a fresh new take on a song we all know so well. The ten songs on Things Change all find Bare in age-defying fine vocal form on cuts such as the Mary Gauthier-penned “I Drink,” an introspective ballad perfectly suited to Bare’s mellowed voice. Bare has always been known for the wry fun he brings to his live performances, and that sense of humor is evident here on ”Trophy Girl” as he sings, “I never thought that we’d go on forever / ‘Cause trophy girls don’t hang around too long / Always looking ‘round for greener pastures / And when they find something better they move on.” The album’s title track itself has an interesting pedigree: Apparently inspired by Bare’s friend, the late songwriter Hoyt Axton, “Times Change” was written by Bare and performed with Norwegian musician Petter Oien, becoming one of Norway’s finalists in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. The new album, produced by singer/songwriter Max T. Barnes, will be released May 26 by Hypermedia Nashville and BFD through RED Distribution. Autographed pre-order copies of THINGS CHANGE are available now at www.bobbybare.com.

Drinkin’ Alone by Chelsea Bain If you get the chance to see Chelsea Bain, take my advice: don’t miss it! Her distinctive voice is equally at home with up tempo rockers and poignant ballads, all of them completely heartfelt. If you need proof, lend an ear to Chelsea’s new EP, Drinkin’ Alone (Turn 3 Records). The title track went to Country radio earlier this year with the music video premiering on Taste of Country in March. The five-track EP, produced by Jordan Sapp, is a showcase of Chelsea’s talents, both as a vocalist and as a songwriter. Chelsea believes that her song writing chops were kicked up a notch when she began collaborating with singer/ songwriter Rachel Farley. She notes that Farley helped pull out emotions and attitudes she wasn’t even aware she possessed. The two co-wrote all five songs on Chelsea’s EP, and Sapp joined them on three of tracks. Growing up as an Arizona farm girl, Chelsea’s two great loves were music and horses. Even at the age of four, she was entering barrel races and on one occasion, she recalls, she finished singing the national anthem and immediately running to the stall to jump on her horse just in time to return to the arena for the class in which she was competing. Chelsea notched up more than ten world and national titles in the American Paint Horse Association as well as building her reputation singing at numerous rodeos around Phoenix. In the end music won out and Chelsea made the trek to Music City. Rodeo’s loss was music’s gain as the new EP proves beyond doubt. Check out Chelsea and samples from the new EP at www.chelseabainmusic.com and follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

EP,

I spent my second straight year on the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama for Hangout 2017 and there was a lot to like, but also quite a few things not to liken but it’s done. It’s over. Hangout has wrapped and Gulf Shores can have their beach back from the clutches of college kids who can’t get enough of the weather, music, food and drinks. With all the awesome headliners and sub-headliners who rocked the stage to obvious fanfare, such as Mumford and Sons, Chance the Rapper, Band of Horses and Twenty One Pilots, here’s a list of some of the bands who were a bit off the beaten path who really made the most of the event with their talents.

The New Respects may not, yet, be high-profile, but this family rock n’ roll band is certainly high energy. The BMI Stage is one of the best places to find an unlikely gem at The Hangout each year. In a a misty Sunday morning downpour, The New Respects kept things electric for dancers in the sand down below. Plus, they are a Nashville-based band and we love it!

played. We had to work through it and got wet but the crowd was into it and the over festival has been a radical experience,” said lead singer of Susto, Justin Osbourne. I think my favorite quote from the whole weekend was from upcoming pop artist, Fletcher when asked how the festival was going for her and she said, “Flashing nipples and riding ferris wheels at Hangout.”

Fletcher had a minor nip-slip during her performance but carried on like a champ and even was brave enough to face her fear of heights. “It literally all happened at once, and I just ran with it. Free the nipple,” said Fletcher Cheat Codes was another one of our favorites and during a quick discussion before their show they talked about why festival gigs like Hangout are so special.

Susto performed on both Saturday and Sunday. Special kudos are in order for their effort during the heavy rain Sunday afternoon. They seemed to use the weather as a source of energy, becoming more and more comfortable as the show went on and the crowd got weather. Luckily, none of the equipment was damaged. The band’s keyboardist made sure of it, performing behind a large plastic bag, fashioned into a tarp. When we talked to the band after their performance they told us that this was their first time playing in the rain but they loved it. “This festival is like nothing else we have ever

er/

r, n

“Seeing the crowd; people really come here to enjoy the music,” said Trevor and then Matt added, “Part of our vibe is blending all genres into one so during our set we play a let bit of hip hop, pop music, sing, dj, dubstep and more. All kinds of genres are there connecting all music lovers in one place and we are uniting them together with our music.” One thing that was kind of a bummer was DJ Snake cancelled his set. First, let me say that I hope DJ Snake is OK. On Sunday, hours after the festival had started for the day, I got a notification from the Hangout Fest app that the French DJ had cancelled

er-

June 2017 Vol 25. #187.indd 11

his set, with no reason listed. The “Turn Down for What” hitmaker later deleted all of his social media and days later we still have no clue what happened. I’m not the biggest DJ Snake fan by any means, but he was billed in the top 10 names on the lineup, so hopefully there is a good reason for him disappointing his fans last minute.

In the days leading up to the weekend, weather forecasts suggested there was going to be a hellacious storm during the festival. All totaled, the festival was only cancelled for about 40 minutes of the entire weekend. When the storm looked like it was going to come in Saturday and Sunday night, Hangout Fest adjusted by moving headliners Twenty-one pilots and Mumford & Sons up a half-hour earlier. Sure, some people missed the notifications from the app because service can be shoddy or your phone can be dead, but there’s no perfect solution in cases like this. I feel like they handled it as best as they could on the fly, and even though 21P and Sigur Ros fans were disappointed to be sent home early, they got to see more than they otherwise would have. The fest seemed to wait as long as possible before pulling the plug on the music. Hands down, the most complaints I heard about the actual music were about Lil Yachty and MGMT. A lot of people were excited to see rapper Lil Yachty, and he was bumped into DJ Snake’s later performance slot after the DJ pulled out. I didn’t see him myself, but of everyone I talked to that was really into his music, he was a huge disappointment. I did go see MGMT, an act I’d been told were inconsistent live for years. They were lackluster, seemed to not really give a shit and took so much time between songs that they never got into a rhythm. It was nice hearing their hits, but their sound just doesn’t really translate well to the live show. Overall, between the weather and performance let downs this years’ Hangout was a great one for the books and we look forward to seeing what they bring to the beach next year. been selected as one of the CMA emerging artists and given a booth during Fan Fair in the Nashville Music City Centre (June 8). AT: If you could meet one songwriter, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

I had the opportunity to chat with our featured CMA Emerging Artist, Hannah Belle. A pastor’s daughter born “and raised”, she adds, in Mississippi. Hannah recently moved to Louisiana where she teaches 4th grade full time, while serving as a worship leader at her community church, all the while moonlighting as an up-and-coming Country and Gospel starlet touring her way through the south with her Nashville-based band. Sweet as she is charming, Hannah makes this all work. AT: Tell me about your shows for CMA week? HB: I’m having my very first fan club party, ever! I’ll be playing at the Listening Room on Friday, June 9, at 1PM. Then I’ll be performing at The Row later that evening, at 8PM. AT: Is this your first CMA Fest? HB: I went to CMA Fest as a fan when I was little-bitty, back when it was at the old fairgrounds, I remember it was when Faith Hill was brand new, and we stood in line to meet her, which wasn’t even very long because not many people knew who she was. But I knew that she was from Mississippi, and so was I, and so we wanted to meet her. She kissed my brother on the cheek, and then, of course, she became FAITH HILL after that. That was my first country experience, back in the nineties. I returned several times as a teenager when CMA had moved to Titan Stadium. This will be the fifth year I’ve applied as an artist and

HB: Liz Rose and Chris Stapleton; both alive and simply phenomenal. I just want to know where they draw all their ideas and inspiration from. I’ve been blessed with the ability to write, but they have been superblessed, and their talent is unbelievable and I’d love if some of that rubbed off on me. AT: Does your experience leading services or teaching help you with songwriting or connecting with your audiences? HB: Without a doubt! You meet a lot of people when you lead worship. People will come and talk to you because they feel like they can confide in you. Of course, I don’t take their stories, write ‘em down and sing them for everyone, but I can be inspired by someone’s story. I actually have a song on one of my albums, called “Stay Strong”, that was written after talking with one of my students dealing with bullying issues with her peers. AT: Do your students listen to your music? HB: My students, they think I am a superstar. AT: Do you incorporate your experience as a songwriter with your students? HB: I bring the guitar to the classroom and we use it for little songs, whether it’s for math or language. We’ve even written songs when working on poetry, and I’ve helped them put tunes to it, and we’ve recorded them on the computer. They really dig that their teacher can do that type of stuff with them. AT: What’s your goal as an artist? HB: To connect with the audience, no matter the size. I like to share what a song means to me or why I wrote it, and I like to make sure

the audience feels connected with the song in some way. I love to go to a concert and feel like I’m best friends with the artist, and so that’s my goal when I’m performing. AT: What is your proudest accomplishment to-date? HB: Being chosen as a CMA emerging artist. I know how many people are out there in the same position that are just trying to make it in the music business. CMA gives me an opportunity to be out in front of people with their name behind me, and I really consider that an honor. I also had the opportunity to record recently with producer, Ernie Rowell. He gets my songwriting and he’s just amazing to work with. It’s a privilege to have him and some of Nashville’s finest and accomplished musicians playing on the album. AT: What’s your favorite original song and why? HB: Aw man! That’s a tough one. On my EP that we’re releasing in June, I wrote a song called, “Forgive”. It’s one of my newest songs that came from an experience that I had been through. I’m still blown away by it every time I listen to it. It’s not just the words or the melody, but the whole outcome and how everything came together. AT: Good segue! What’s the name of this EP coming out in June? HB: The EP is called, “Catch Her If You Can”. We’re actually going to do the release at the Fan Club party in Nashville. So the Listening Room will be the first place to get your hands on the new record. AT: Is there one song or quote that best describes you? HB: It’s actually one of my songs off my EP, called “Raised”. My daddy would always say things to me like, “Oh that person just wasn’t raised like you, Hannah.” I would later come to say, “I wasn’t allowed to grow up, I was raised.” I think that really sums me up. AT: What advice would you give young aspiring artists? HB: Don’t try to be anybody else. Be Younique! Catch one of Hannah’s upcoming shows during CMA Fest. She’s a fine testament of a classic country southern belle. Interview with Aaron Tessis

HANNAH BELLE at CMA FEST 2017: THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 10:00AM - 5:00PM FAN FAIR X MEET & GREETS FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 9:30AM - 5:00PM FAN FAIR X MEET & GREETS SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 9:30AM - 5:00PM FAN FAIR X MEET & GREETS SUNDAY, JUNE 12, 10:00AM - 5:00PM FAN FAIR X MEET & GREETS

ABOUT HANNAH BELLE:

Singing in a gospel band, with her siblings and her Daddy, since she was three years old, Hannah Belle has learned how to make a stage her own. Growing up, she had always told her parents she wanted to be a country music star, like Faith Hill. Since beginning her musical journey, she has made great strides towards making her dream come true. From her first festival in Port Gibson, MS, to the Country Music Association’s Fan Fair X in Nashville 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and has been invited to return for her fifth time in 2017. Hannah’s progress has been steady. She has polished her skills, performing at fairs and festivals in Mississippi and surrounding states, while sharing the stage with the likes of Sawyer Brown, Diamond Rio, Bucky Covington, T Graham Brown, Jo’el Sonnier, Shenandoah, Joe Diffie, and Josh Thompson, just to name a few. Hannah Belle’s music videos have also done well for her with one claiming a top 5 spot in the Independent Country Music Association awards and her others being picked up by Great American Country, CMT, and Zuus Country, now TCN. From Heritage Guitar Great John Richards’ New Album Walk A Mile in My Blues Peggy Mercer, Nashville, Tennessee 2017

He’s played professional music in Nashville since age 14, (over 50 years) having started on stage at the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree, and toured with bands all over the USA. His trio, the John Richards Group, has made their mark on the music world and John Richards, known for guitar prowess now has a blues cd to add to his list of accomplishments. He is endorsed by world acclaimed Heritage Guitars. Walk A Mile in My Blues is impressing blues lovers, jazz lovers and even a few country crossover music lovers. The album was recorded at Mark Thornton (Jerry Reed) Studio, Madison, Tennessee, and at Gene Breeden Studio in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, and Mastered by Jamie Brantley Music, Nashville, Tennessee. The cd features: drummer, Austin Bealmear, bass guitarist, John Ownby, John Richards vocals, and acoustic and electric guitars, Sax great Richard Griffin and background vocals Faye Hanserd, aka Little Gladys. The project was designed and produced by Peggy Mercer of Mercer Road Records, Georgia, USA. The songs were written by Peggy Mercer, with melodies by John Richards and two songs, Molehills and Honky Tonk Bar were written by Frank Harrell, former head coach of the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles and TTU assistant Athletic Director. All arrangements are by John Richards. The title track, “Walk A Mile in My Blues” was written to focus attention on the less fortunate, including the homeless and mentally challenged. Other songs offer upbeat and fun lyrics heavy on blues and edging country and with a jazzy relationship. “My Time to Fly” offers a blues-y pop style song with a gospel vibe. For this adventure into blues, Nashville embraces the new beats and worldwide praise. Said Jimmy Church of music legend, “ I congratulate John Richards on this new blues project...I know it will be a winner.” NashvilleMusicGuide.com 14

A Look Into The History of Nashville Music Guide For this issue, instead of picking one artist to spotlight for our cover, we decided to take a different approach and give you a little history about us. The twins on the front cover are Caylee and Stetson Matthews and they represent the new generation of fans that will be coming up with Nashville Music Guide. As you can see from our tag line, Nashville Music Guide has been around since 1995 - whether online or print - we have continued our journey of promoting the music that comes in and out of the Greater Nashville area. We have always prided ourselves in giving independents, new comers, legends, and more the opportunity to be heard and seen.

fortunate enough to be in the first row when he proceeded to perform a wondrous solo rendition of “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain” and followed that by two other songs from the new album. Then the label spokesperson had everyone form a single file line for Willie to personally greet each person. Gordy knew Willie personally from his days in Nashville before he made it big, and Gordy relayed to me how Willie told him “You got to keep on keepin’ on to make it in this life.”

Here are a few stories from past and present of our adventures at ‘The Guide.’

Strangely I was never into celebrity autograph signing or taking pictures with celebrities, so I did not initially get in line. However, I noticed that Willie was starting to look tired.

The Night NMG Almost Got Willie Off The Wagon

It must have been a good hour that Willie was signing autographs, taking individual photos and conversing with each person.

Most notably is Preshias Harris, the Music Row Encyclopedia and one the most honest and hardest working people I have ever met. Even with nearly 100 hundred surgeries under her hat, Preshias bounces back the same day and goes right back to work. So many of her services for her ‘children’ she does without recognition, but she does it from her heart. Throughout the ownership of ‘The Guide’ people have came and gone. One who has stood by my side and held us together is Amanda Andrews ... pulling off last minute articles, and late nights putting ads and material together. And no matter where ‘The Guide’ had taken us the night before, and no matter how late she is up and bouncing, she stays on schedule pushing the rest of us in the hallway to make the interviews and the appointments.

That is when I decided to go to the bar, get two whiskey shots and proceed to the end of the line. When my turn came, Willie gave me a strange look as I approached with the 2 shots.

(Dan Wunsch, Editor NMG 1995-2010) Myself and Brad Fischer had a great 15 year run with Nashville Music Guide before the reins were handed over to Randy Rich and Amanda Andrews in 2010. There are many great stories to tell, but my most memorable one was at Willie Nelson’s Album release Party for his album GREAT DIVIDE in 2009 at a Music Row Bar on Division St. There were approximately 100 label and industry persons invited including myself and Gordy Collins. When we sat down at our table, the first thing we noticed was a gift grab bag for each of us. Out of the bag, I pulled out a copy of the album, an 8 by 11 photo of Willie, a bottle of Whiskey River, his latest book and a plastic wrapped round red candy. Gordy, however informed me of my mistake... it was not candy but a red rubber. The label had generously sprung for free Whiskey River shots at the bar so we were all pretty buzzed when Willie came out on stage with his signature guitar. I was

I handed him one and said to him, “Willie, I’d like to toast to all the great work you have done with Farm Aid. We both gulped down the shots, and Willie said to me, “Thank you son, get me another one.” Gordy had snapped a photo of me and Willie holding the two shots just prior to the toast and we published the photo in Nashville Music Guide. A short while later, a music fan approached me about our published photo asking me, “Did you not know that Willie gave up drinking Whiskey and claims smoking pot saved his life.” I truly did not know, but thank God that night did not become known as “The Night NMG Got Willie Off The Wagon.“ Reflections from Randy Rich on NMG (Randy Rich, Editor NMG 2010-Present) After purchasing the Nashville Music Guide in 2008 I have experienced my share of opportunities that would last me a lifetime. From George Jones 80th Birthday Party to meeting stars that I have only dreamed about, these events have made some of my biggest dream come true. The people I have met and made lifetime friends with has been totally amazing.

My fondest memory of ‘The Guide” is my nephew ‘Big Joe’ Matthews, who has since passed and the bar Pick’s Nashville. Pick’s is where Big Joe and I met some of the most amazing and talented people including David Ray, Brandon Lay, Tony Boatwright, Wade and Tina Johnson, Josh Thompson, Jaime Saylor, Ben Gallagher and so many more. Many that we met in that little bar have went on to open shows for Hank Jr, Blake Shelton, Tim Mc Graw and numerous others. The Nashville Music Guide has led me to meet people like Steve Kilgore, who grew up with legends like Hank Jr., Jeanne Seely, George Jones and so many more, As well as Silver Stephens who is another one of those powerhouses like Preshias that have been helpful in our NMG ventures. NMG has led me to meet the famous narrator of the History Channel’s “Mississippi Men,” Joe Kent. Owning the magazine has been a life time experience for me, myself, my friends and family. I

have enjoyed the ride and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us. Give a Little to The Guide (Krys Midgett, Writer NMG 2012-Present) I started at Nashville Music Guide in 2012. I was hired on to help with editing and layout. I was running Strum Magazine (it was an e-zine) at the time, as well. I love magazines and was excited to write articles, do layout, edit, whatever they needed and to see my by-line in print. Being in the media for several years prior, I was friends with the founder, Dan Wunsch. I love Dan. He was very encouraging with all my endeavors. After Randy Rich bought NMG from Dan, I started running into Big Joe at different media events. Big Joe would always give me a huge hug and say I was his favorite. He was Managing Editor of NMG at the time. We media tend to stick together, at

freelance and look forward to more crazy ideas to get them invloved in moving forward. Lyrics N Legends in The Guide (Sherryl Craig, Writer NMG 2012-Present) I’m so proud to be part of the family here at Nashville Music Guide. In 2010 I had just relocated to Nashville and had begun the search for a new career. I was attending a party hosted by Kirt Webster of Webster & Associates and met an amazing lady named Krys Midgett of Give a Little Nashville. Krys opened the door for me to meet Big Joe Matthews who offered me a position with NMG. This led to having my own column and solidifying my career as a professional entertainment journalist. My work has appeared on the cover many times through out the years and I’m very proud to represent such a prominent figure in the industry. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Randy Rich and Amanda Andrews for over five years now, interviewing some of the most celebrated artists not only in Country music but in various other genres as well. From Toby Keith and Lorrie Morgan to Styx and the Kentucky Headhunters all the way back to Gene Watson and Nashville’s own The Darlins. I truly enjoy my work with NMG and look forward to many more years to come.

I was deemed “Big Joe & Rooster’s” official babysitter. Oh the crazy nights and adventures from the radio shows, to the industry events, the concerts, meetings, interviews and more- some of which made me want to pull my hair out but secretly were some of the most exciting moments I had ever experienced. They introduced me to the music industry and I suppose I have them to thank for this beautifully disastrous opportunity. Another person that I have to mention is Preshias, aka Mama P. She has been my mentor over the past 7 years and I am forever grateful for all the knowledge, love, tears and laughter we have shared. When Big Joe left for Oklahoma to pursue his music career, I could not have been more proud of him. We stayed close over the years and I even made a special trip out to Oklahoma one year to celebrate his birthday. I was constantly calling him those first few months after he left, sometimes in tears because I felt like I didn’t know

The Adventure Has Just Begun ... (Amanda Andrews, Managing Editor, 2010-Present) least the cool ones do and we became fast friends. After Big Joe left to pursue his music in Oklahoma, I ran into Randy at an event and he offered me a position. Amanda Andrews was the Managing Editor and Janell was in Sales. I loved all the staff. I am still friends with them. I eventually did co-editing with Amanda. I started my Give A Little Nashville magazine and it was a section in NMG for a while -- which we hope to be bringing back soon. Amanda even helped me build GAL’s website. Then I started my charity, Give A Little Christmas, and Amanda was one of my ‘Elves’. Nashville Music Guide has hosted benefits and helped me with so much of my crazy ideas. They even let their ‘Blues Jam’ be my birthday party one year and Johnny Neel, from The Allman Brothers band, sang me “Happy Birthday.” There have been some rocky times in this fun relationship but we are all family. I still do

Nashville Music Guide fell into my lap by pure luck when I was searching for a media internship on Craigslist. My hopes were to find one that would give college credit so I would have one less class to take. Little did I know that when I stepped into the office for my interview at 38 Music Square East that it would change my life forever. Nashville Music Guide is not just a magazine to me. It is a group of people that have become my family, it is work that has become my passion, and it is a new adventure that I get to experience everyday. When I started working for the Guide, I worked directly with Big Joe and Glenda Montgomery (our secretary) on a daily basis. I remember coming in and seeing Joe hunched over the computer typing furiously away and Glenda on the phone gabbing as always, but they would always stop and give me great big smiles and hellos. It was warm and welcoming. I remember that I had worked for Randy under Joe for about 8 months before he even realized that I was an intern. As soon as we got past that awkward moment we became fast friends and before long

what I was doing. He always reassured me that I was a ‘rockstar’ and that everything was going to be fine with the magazine and that I wasn’t going to mess it up. When I got the news that he had passed, I was devastated. Not only had I lost a mentor in this crazy music entertainment biz, but I had lost a dear friend. From that moment on, Nashville Music Guide was not just a magazine it was a part of Big Joe, of Rooster Randy Rich, of Preshias, of all of us. The Nashville Music Guide is an outlet for chasing dreams and it has touched so many lives with it’s stories, connections, people and more. There are so many people that I have met because of this old rag -Steve Kilgore, Joe Kent, Silver Stephens, Preshias Harris, Sherryl Craig, Jessica Northey, Jessica Andrews, Krys Midgett, Dan Wunsch, and so many more. Our adventures with Nashville Music Guide have just begun and what’s in store for us is life-changing and I know this because it has already changed lives. -

of Your Satin Sheets.” In fact I played on just about all of Paycheck’s songs,” said Vest. “Billy Sherrill was producing Johnny Paycheck back then and he would always request me to play on the recordings. Sherrill said, I was part of the “Paycheck Sound.” Looking back, I am honored.” In 1962, Vest hit the road on his first professional tour with Pee Wee King and the Golden West Cowboys Band. “It was great, I also worked with David Houston and Johnny Duncan on the road but in 1969 I wanted to start my family and be off the road. So I settled down and started working recording sessions here in Nashville,” said Vest. “I guess my plan worked because this year I will be married to Helen for 57 years.” After leaving the tour things began to happen with his work in the studio sessions. Vest has recorded with so many major stars, on some great Country Music Classics.

In 1978, the hottest spot to be on any given night in Nashville was a huge 600-seat night club called, “Georges Jones’ Possum Holler.” This is where I met, Jim Vest. My father, Merle Kilgore introduced us and we have been great friends since those Honky Tonk night clubs days in Printer’s Alley. To say how proud of Jim I am would be an understatement. To list all of his accomplishments would be impossible in this article but I can tell you that when it comes to the Steel Guitar, Jim Vest is considered one of the best and is “Nashville’s Favorite Son.” Jim is in multiple Steel Guitar Hall of Fames, including the International Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. Jim is also in the Georgia Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Jim was the founder one of Nashville’s historic best bands and played with them a number of years. You may have heard of them, “The Nashville Cats.” One of my favorite songs that Jim co-wrote was a multi-million dollar success performed by Johnny Paycheck called “Cotton to Satin.” I asked Jim, ‘How did this great Johnny Paycheck hit come about?’ “My friend, and singer songwriter David Chamberlain, was really pleading with me to co-write with him,” said Vest. “David was trying to get something going with his career. Here in Nashville songwriters are selective about who they write with, but David just kept bugging me to death to sit down and write a song with him. I agreed and the first song we wrote together was ‘Cotton to Satin.’ That song was on the Take This Job and Shove It album.” Vest also shared with me that they co-wrote a top ten hit for Tammy Wynette called, “I’m Not Easy, I’m A Lady.” “I played steel guitar on “Take This Job and Shove It” and “Slide Off

“One song I was working on with Vern Gosdin which is now consider a classic is, “Set Them Up Joe” and just to mess with the minds of steel guitar players I decided to lower the strings down an octave,” said Vest. “When that song is played today, steel guitar pickers still ask me how I did it … so now you know my secret.” Vest’s publishing company has had success in the catalog, including a cut by Tracy Lawrence called, “Sticks and Stones.” His record label, “Vest Music Group” (VMG) has three really great talents already on the roster, and a soon to be announced addition is coming in the shape of a 13 year old young lady who is an unbelievable musician and singer. Vest is also working with the published author, Carol Lee Palmer, on a book about his life story. It discusses the inside story on how he came up in the Music Business. The working title is Raised by Legends. “Over the years I have been fortunate to have worked with so many great stars in my career,” said Vest. “I learned so much from each one. It was an education that taught me how to learn on a step by step basis. I really have been so blessed.” Some of the fun facts from his life include: being allow to sit on Air Force One under Lydon B. Johnson’s Presidency; His love to build model trains, r/c airplanes and boats; and stopping through steel guitar shows to shake hands and kiss babies (he chuckled at the last one and commented on how they treat him like royalty at these conventions). One of Jim’s favorite singles was “Home Sweet Homeless People” and can be found on the Gifted Few record label, along with his new album with more great songs penned by Jim Vest. Produced by Hank Cochran “I’ve been around long enough to know that Country Music will come back around, back to its roots. A Fiddle and a Steel Guitar will always be in a real Country band,” said Vest. It’s that time of year again when thousands flocked to MIddle Tennessee to share their love for good music. Whether it be in Nashville for the Country Music Association’s Festival or a little farther out on ‘‘The Farm,’ formally known as Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Bonnaroo is in its 16th year of bringing music, arts and more to fans that come from across the world. So when you’re looking for next-level electronic, dance, and hip-hop on The Farm, make your way to The Other.

Big Red is back, and he’s settin’ up shop! From the creative minds that brought you Kalliope, comes the Big Red’s Garage! Basically when registering your writband - which everyone is required to have - you have the option to add a credit card and a secret pin so you can pay for food, drinks, merch and more with the tap of a wrist. Still smart to bring cash and a backup card because this is new after all and not everyone may be on board for cashless yet.

God’s Problem Child: Willie Nelson times. Nelson took the fire as a sign and moved back to Austin, Texas. The music scene was really starting to take off at that time. He could be himself. With Trigger by his side and his distinctive style and sound, a legend was in the making. He was at a point of reinvention. He would meet up with other artists who were ‘outside the norm’ and the Outlaws would change the world, at least the music world. The ‘Red-Headed Stranger’ came out in 1975 and made Willie Nelson a household name. One of my favorites is “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain’ from that album. The house fire had a silver-lining, as strange as that is to say, and his many albums and many hit songs are proof. He has lived so much life in his 84 years and has so much more to live.

Close your eyes and think of ‘your’ music. The soundtrack of your life. I don’t know about you, but the names that come to my mind are George Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Tom T. Hall, Roger Miller, Roy Orbison, Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, The Beatles, so many more but one of the top on my list is – always – Willie Nelson. Willie Nelson is one of our music icons. He wrote and sang songs that inspired singers of yesterday and continues to inspire the songs of tomorrow. His sound and style are distinctive. They take you home, back to your childhood. Yet, they are new and alive. His new album ‘God’s Problem Child’ is as amazing as he ever was. Every song on this album will make you listen again and again. Willie Nelson and Buddy Cannon co-wrote seven of the songs on this album. Cannon’s mother, Lyndel Rhodes, wrote a great song on the album called ‘Little House on the Hill’. And as a Merle Haggard fan, his tribute song, ‘He Won’t Ever Be Gone’, written by Gary Nicholson, will bring tears to your eyes. He chooses songs that fit well with his sound and his style of songwriting. Remember Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’? If you don’t, you should really do some homework. Willie wrote that and recorded it in Texas before sharing it in Nashville. “I had just come up from Texas and I was in Tootsie’s listening to the jukebox. I had brought a record that I had cut in Texas of ‘Crazy’ and Tootsie let me put it on the jukebox and play it. Charlie Dick, Patsy Cline’s husband, heard the song,” said Nelson. “It was around, almost midnight, and he said ‘Let’s go to the house, I want Patsy to hear this song’. I was like ‘You don’t want to go over there at midnight. I’m about half drunk and you are too.’ So he said ‘Come on, she won’t care’. So we drove over to Patsy’s. I stayed in the car. In 1963, he bought a house in Ridgetop, Tennessee. Six years later, he bought Trigger (his guitar). That year, his house burned down. He managed to save Trigger from the flames. Since then, Trigger has saved him multiple

The day before Willie turned 84, he gave all music-lovers a gift. His newest album ‘God’s Problem Child’ was released. He is still topping the charts. It debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Charts and is making waves. After years and years of hit songs and touring, he is not slowing down.

Nashville’s latest breakout band, The New Respects released their debut EP, Here Comes Trouble was released March 10 by Credential Recordings. It’s a driving rock sound with an inclusive party-like atmosphere.

The New Respects is a family affair, made up of three siblings, twins Alexis (bass) and Zandy Fitzgerald (guitar), along with their brother Darius (drums), and cousin Jasmine Mullen (vocals/guitar). Citing influences such as John Mayer, Aretha Franklin, and Lenny Kravitz, Despite rumors to the contrary, Willie Nelson is ‘Still Not Dead’ and we are very relieved at that. Since 1999, Milwaukee’s Summerfest has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest annual music festival. Over 700 bands perform during the 11-day event each year, and some of the most popular artists in the world have played on one of the 11 stages. We can thank former Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier for bringing the idea of Summerfest to Wisconsin. Inspired by the convivial atmosphere he experienced at Munich’s Oktoberfest, Maier made it his mission to create a version of the ethnic festival in downtown Milwaukee. In 1968, the first Summerfest kicked off at various locations around the city. Two years later, the event moved to a centralized location on Milwaukee’s popular lakefront. What used to be a nuclear-capable missile base is now a state-of-the-art entertainment venue spanning 75 acres. Today, the grounds include a colorful midway, bars, restaurants, vendor buildings, food and beverage stands, restrooms, dozens of high-tech stages and a 23,000-seat amphitheater which hosts some of the hottest stars in the music industry. The heart and soul of Summerfest is its impressive musical lineup. From its first days as a primitive street party designed to unite Milwaukee residents, Summerfest has drawn legendary entertainers. In 1968, Bob Hope headlined the event followed by country singing sensation Dolly Parton. In 1972, The Doors rocked Summerfest’s main stage. Since then, a series of diverse musical acts have graced the festival’s grounds including Bob Dylan, Sting, Cher, Paul Simon, Bon Jovi, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Pearl Jam and Rascal Flatts. In 2013, more than 800 acts gave nearly 1,100 performances, including high-octane gigs by Pitbull, Billy Idol and New Kids on the Block.

“And then within that, we also have a number of interesting artifacts, some dating back to early days. So, early tickets, bumper stickers, some of the early promotional stuff. Which, it’s interesting to contrast that to all of the things that are out now. We have early stickers, and then we have gadgets from around 2000, like calculators and things like that, that have Summerfest logos on them. All the way up to more modern things, USB drives and all kinds of different stuff. We have a display with just glassware and cups and things like that.” The exhibition also includes newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, T-shirts, backstage passes, posters, banners, memorabilia, those collectible Summerfest pins, autographed guitars and more. The exhibit is available Mondays through Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Sept. 29. General admission is $7. Summerfest will also have an interactive exhibit on the grounds during the festival, and a commemorative 124-page book, “50 Years of Smiles,” is available for $23 on Summerfest’s website and at the Summerfest store during the festival. When discussing the evolution of Summerfest with Bob Babisch, Summerfest’s entertainment director since 1978, the topics of genres came up and the recent inclusion of EDM to the festival’s lineup. “We understand how important that genre is to the music world now, and are making sure (younger hip-hop fans) are interested in our festival,” Babisch said EDM acts this year include The Chainsmokers, GirlTalk, Flume and more. With five decades of stories to tell, Summerfest it is practically impossible to capture it all on paper, but luckily their is an exhibition for that. “It’s really image-heavy, so we have a lot of great pictures dating back to the earliest performers all the way up to modern era. We really wanted to have it be a very visual representation of Summerfest,” says MCHS Curator of Collections Ben Barbera.

THE TRUTH ABOUT TY

love, which is why his fanbase has only grown since his groundbreaking coming out. The video for “That Kind of Night” is the first single to be released off of that album and is now playing on CMT. “When you come to one of my shows, you’re not coming to a political event.” Ty says he still sings “she” in the love songs the crowd sings along with, “because that’s how the song was written” which is his way of honoring his songwriter’s truths. “But when I walk on stage, I am just Ty Herndon. I am just my authentic self.” If you happen to walk into Wildhorse on June 8th, you’ll see “just” Ty partnering with CMT’s Cody Alan for the second annual Love And Acceptance show during this year’s CMA week. This benefit raises money to help Nashville’s homeless youth who are frequently kicked out onto the streets over LGBTQ-related disagreements with their guardians. Ty’s friends Thompson Square, Runaway June, Mickey Guyton, Kree Harrison, Billy Gilman and several others will be pouring out their love and acceptance to all who are lucky enough to attend.

Ask anyone how to write a country song and they’ll tell you all you need is three chords and the truth. The truth is, Ty Herndon is gay. As a country artist, and a purist at that, Ty HAD to tell the truth about it. I asked him how he found the courage to come out as Country music’s first openly gay male artist and his answer was “three chords and the truth.” While that seems simple, the reality was that he could have lost his entire career, which took a lot more bravery than most of us could even imagine. He says he had reached a point where he was willing to give up his music career “to live authentically in my skin.” He got so tired of having to walk into a room, or interview, and not tell the truth, that he says “I was willing to go and get my real estate license.” Fortunately, he lost very little of his fan base and gained a legion of new fans who embraced his openness. The “truth,” it seems, has not yet left Country music.

Grammy-nominated and Dove Award winning artist Ty Herndon created the Concert for Love & Acceptance, when his 20th anniversary fan club party turned into a coalition of artists gathering in support of Nashville’s at-risk youth. The driving force behind the benefit is Herndon’s desire to foster positive cultural change and encourage Nashville’s youth to live to their fullest potential. Three chords and a whole lot of love and truth. For more info visit: www. tyherndon.com

With the November release of his newest album “House on Fire,” the only change in his honest and passionate sound is the lack of gender-defining pronouns. I think it’s safe to say that Ty proved that he is the same Ty Herndon that his fans have come to

Modern Day Outlaw has a ‘Guitar For Sale’

Guitar For Sale: Fairly good shape. Made out in Sonoma, CA. early ‘68. A chip in the headstock, a crack in the spruce top. No major damage. It’s been around the world. Seen all 50 states. If this old thing could talk, it’d have a lot to say. It’s been here beside me while I lived out my dreams. But I think it’s about time I bid an old friend farewell. See rayscott.com for more information.

No worries, Ray Scott is not selling his guitar. However, he does have a new album out. ‘Guitar For Sale’ is available for preorder on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and at RayScott.com. The best option is to attend his Annual Friends of Ray Scott Party for the album release. It is June 10th from 3 pm til 5:15 at the Courtyard Marriott on 4th Avenue in downtown Nashville. For only $25, you get a pre-show meet & greet, a great show and a “Guitar For Sale’ CD. If you say please, he might even autograph it for you. This album is all older favorites of his. In fact, ‘Pray For Fish’, a song on this album, was a song of Scott’s that Randy Travis cut in 2002 on his Rise and Shine album. He also had cuts with Trace Adkins and Clay Walker. “On a great day, I am a good songwriter for me. I have had some other people record my stuff, so it’s nice to know that a few people liked it enough to do that. It’s a thrill, a humbling thing,” says Scott. His current single off of the album is ‘Livin’ This Way’ and is very Ray Scott. All of the songs were written or co-written by Scott. He isn’t opposed to outside material but it has to be something that he really connects with and believes. “I haven’t done any outside material. I’m not opposed to it. I just haven’t heard anything yet that I felt like I could totally sell. I could like your songs but they may or may not be something I could artistically wrap myself around and turn into something good.
