Editor’s Notes Nashville Music Guide is wrapping up another year of publication and we are honored to say that after 25 years we are still providing promotions to artists, musicians and writers to Music Row and beyond. This year has shuddered our industry to the core. I know we have never experienced such a silent year in our lifetime. Knowing the value of live music has been vastly taken for granted. No live concerts. No music festivals. No time together as a music family. This year has been tough to say the least. While this year has anything but normal for anyone in the music industry, we have strived to keep you up-to-date with coverage and content like we have in the past. And the industry as a whole has found ways through our amazing and ever growing means of technology to stay in touch, share the music, and still feel human connections during a time where social distancing has become the new norm. At least for now. For many artists that break before next year for the holidays is much needed. It is a time to relax, rejuvenate and spend time with ones that bring joy to their lives. This year is a little different; this year we have seen more holiday music by artists than ever before. And that cheer is really need more than ever. It unites people and helps uplift spirits especially during this time when everyone can truly use it. So whether you get to be with your loved ones this year or not, we hope that the this issue can brighten up your holiday season, with a few new and some traditional holiday tunes and virtual performances. In this issue we have highlighted several holiday events (virtual and socially distanced) and music to get you in the spirit. As well as a list of gifts and charitable giving back ideas. Tis the season for giving and thinking of others, the arts - whether it be music or artisans work can be such an uplifting gift. Plus, it is a great way to help an industry that has been hit so badly by the pandemic this year. Also in this issue, you will find our Best of 2020 section which highlights some of our favorites around the city in the Musical Realm of Nashville. We love our city so and love that everyday we get to share all the excitement it has with others. Nashville Music Holiday Holiday guide: Sounds for the Season Carrie Underwood my Gift

My Gift features a combination of beloved traditional favorites celebrating the spiritual nature of the holiday, as well as several new originals. The original songs “Let There Be Peace” and “Sweet Baby Jesus” are written by Underwood, Brett James, and David Garcia. In addition to a very special appearance by Underwood’s 5-year-old son, Isaiah Fisher, on the holiday classic that inspired the album title, “Little Drummer Boy,” My Gift also features her first collaboration with John Legend, on the original track, “Hallelujah,” written by Legend and Toby Gad.

When I found out we were expecting our third child this December, I was surprised… to say the least,” said Chris. “Around that same time, I was starting to write for this Christmas project. ‘All New’ Mickey mouse club Why? Because it’s Christmas Cast from all seven seasons of Disney’s ‘All New’ Mickey Mouse Club reunited after 30 years to partner with MusiCares and The Brave Heart Fund on a very special album of holiday classics. Why? Mid-Western Holiday Songwriters The Mid-Western Songwriters, Jeana Potthoff and Richard Roman, have been writing songs since 2010. They have written over 70 songs but have never even met each other. She lives in Nebraska and he lives in Ohio. They email and call on the phone, but have never Facetimed or Skyped. “In fact some day when we win the Oscar, my thank you speech starts with “This is the first time Jeana and I have every met in person,” said Roman. There hope is that their holiday songs are discovered so they can be a gift unwrapped during the holiday season. The four holiday songs they currently have released are “Keeping The Lights On For You,” “No One Knew,” and “Memories Come Back to Me.” Neither one of them sing and Roman jokes that people pay him not to sing. Nov. 23 @ Virtual Concert with Phil Vassar | Dec. 7-8 @ Hendersonville Wal-Mart For over twenty years, Christmas 4 Kids has given the joy of Christmas to thousands of children that might not otherwise experience it. Give a little Christmas: Gift of Giving Back Spotlight

Every winter we hear a lot of talk about the “season of giving” and we rush around buying and wrapping pretty new things for our family and friends. Our debit cards sigh as we put them back in our wallets at the end of a long day. But what about the folks who don’t have the ability to buy those gifts?

I never had much growing up, but we never did without. As an adult, I have climbed above that poverty line and my kids have much more than they need, but I know how it felt to pinch pennies, cut corners, even pay a bill late in order to buy a small gift for my kids. Those years while we were building our life without support were harder than I hope they ever know. It was during those years that Give A Little Christmas was born. My best friend and fellow editor, Krys, was interviewing a friend for our previous magazine when he mentioned Santa Claus. He said he had always wanted to give presents to homeless children with his long white beard and his rosy-cheeked wife. Krys ran with it and helped Glenn and Dottie Tubb start making plans.

I will never forget our first event. Joey doesn’t climb out of bed easily and he had a particularly rough fall, recovering from a crushed hand. I had lost a lot of my odd jobs to his physical therapy and we had all been in a bit of a funk. That morning I told the boys that we had to go sing for a bunch of kids and help Santa give them presents. I still have never seen Joey jump out of bed so quickly. Our boys came alive when they met Santa and Mrs. Claus. They immediately went to work wrapping, distributing and helping however they could. Joey kept serving the Clauses plates of cookies and cups of milk. They glowed. That was the day I finally understood the spirit of giving, as it illuminated my children. Over the last seven years, Give A Little Christmas (GAL for short) has changed and grown into a blossoming 501c3. Glenn and Dottie had to retire for health reasons, I became the assistant director and our boys eventually learned the truth about the North Pole: it’s actually Southern. Elves are frequently long-haired teenage boys with slight drawls who look very cute in their fuzzy red hats.

GAL serves parts of Wilson, Davidson and Rutherford counties, collecting and distributing toys for families who rarely qualify for any other assistance. We service families with sudden life emergencies of all sizes from income loss due to totaled cars and unexpected injury expenses to big life emergencies like severe health problems, house fires, domestic violence and more. This Christmas we already have over 160 kids signed up.

4. Adopt! We welcome companies and organizations to adopt entire families. We especially like to adopt them out when the families have special-needs children whose gifts are rarely in the donation bins.

1. Collect! We host toy drives all over and all the time. We even have toy drives in the summer, a list of confirmed drives is included here.

As a special bonus, all contributions of time, gifts and money are qualifying donations and can get you a nice tax write-off or those much-needed volunteer hours.

2. Wrap! We throw wrapping parties where “elves” help us wrap the donations and label and bag them for distribution.

Although they both grew up in Alabama, Holly Helms and Stewart Halcomb of The Springs first met playing the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. “Up before me was this girl. She sounded great. She was beautiful. I instantly knew I had to talk to her,” says Stewart. Little did they know they would become partners, offstage and on, amassing over one million streams across platforms, and opening for stars like Florida Georgia Line, Kelly Clarkson, Reba, Little Big Town, Eric Church, Alan Jackson, and many more. When it comes to The Springs, the only real surprise is that it didn’t happen sooner. “It took three or four years before we became a duo,” explains Stewart. “We didn’t pursue anything initially but the more we dated, we realized that we made a great team,” details Holly, “We each have our strengths, and when we put them together, people in the industry noticed.” Once together, there was no stopping them. Their live shows began to endear them to a rapidly growing fan base; they have made regular appearances at CMA Music Festival; charted on the Billboard Country Chart with their latest release, “Old Fashioned,” hitting #33; and their albums have landed on top 10 lists on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Music. But perhaps most importantly, the two are now married. “We got engaged at the Bluebird, right where we met,” smiles Stewart, “I was able to get her parents and my parents there on both sides of the stage. Mix all the ingredients (Chex Mix, Mini Marshmallows, M&Ms, and peanuts) to your desired flavor & amount. 2. Spread out dry mixture on a large pan over parchment paper. 3. Remembering Billy Joe Shaver Imagine you’ve been writing songs for almost 20 years and you’re at the end of your rope, ready to throw in the towel, when you get a message on your phone that says “trim this and I’ll record it on my next album” and then Billy Joe Shaver is singing a song he started and wants you to finish it. It all started when I had gone to one of Billy’s concerts when he came to Nashville with a friend of mine, who was also a friend of Billy’s. He was going to introduce us, but Billy wasn’t feeling good after the show and didn’t see anyone. I bought his autobiography at the show that night. Billy was a big boxing fan and wrote in his autobiography how much he admired heavyweight contender, Earnie Shavers. Just by chance, prior to becoming a songwriter, I was a prize-fighter and was in the ring with Earnie in 1983. I was able to put Billy and Earnie on the phone together for, what Billy called, “a great conversation.” At the next concert, the crowd was so packed, that Billy Joe actually tapped me on the shoulder so that he could pass to go backstage. I was prepared for just such a moment and put a note in his pocket and told him that it was the phone number for Earnie Shavers. Billy Joe called him and then called me and that started our friendship. Billy and I would swap phone calls and text messages, talking about boxing and songwriting. Before I met him at the Factory, he suggested we write a song together about a boxer. This is when I slipped pass security and confronted Billy back stage somewhat of how he did Waylon. Pictured is my son’s guitar, the one I used convincing security I was in Billy Joe Shaver’s band to get back stage when he was performing at The Factory, in Franklin, TN, for Music City Roots. I walked up to Billy and put 3 songs in his shirt pocket and said “you promised to write a song with me and I’m going to hold you to it”. It took 2 years, but Billy Joe Shaver finally called. Billy would later tell me the story behind the song. He said “I had a fight with the devil last night and didn’t think I was going to make it, but I did. 2020 Ascap Country Music Awards The Nashville music community’s resilient spirit was on full display as ASCAP honored the writers and publishers of country music’s biggest songs of the past year at the 58th Annual ASCAP Country Music Awards. Held November 9-12 across all @ascap social media handles, our first-ever virtual Awards brought fans, friends and the industry along for the ride as our winners shared exclusive photos, videos, acceptance speeches and a few surprises. Superstar songwriter Ashley Gorley and Warner Chappell Music further cemented their legacies, earning Songwriter of the Year and Publisher of the Year (respectively) for the eighth time; Josh Osborne, Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen and Brad Tursi - the four songwriters behind Song of the Year “One Man Band” - are also longtime ASCAP Country Music Awards vets. But the diversity of our winning songwriters, which this year included veteran pop songwriters crossing over to the country charts, and 11 songwriters winning for the first time, was also a testament to the incredible expansion of the country songwriting community, and country music in general.

54th Annual CMA awards: The Heart of Country Remains True In a year like no other, “The 54th Annual CMA Awards” brought the Country Music community together, live, for the first time in months to celebrate the very best in the genre. In a night filled with riveting performances, heartfelt speeches and emotional tributes, Country Music’s Biggest Night™ proved, once again, that even in the toughest of times, the heart of Country remains true. Eric Church, performing “Hell of a View,” was awarded the night’s top honor of CMA Entertainer of the Year, a first for the artist. “If there was ever a year not to win...” Church laughed as he took the stage to accept the night’s ultimate trophy. “This year, at least for me, has been about loss – loss of life, loss of playing shows, loss of freedom, loss of kids being in school... And you know what the win is? The win is we all were here tonight, together as Country music – in person, live and I believe this, I really believe this: It’s gonna be music that brings us out of this. That is the one thing that’s gonna save the world. Politicians are about division; music is about unity.” Before leaving the stage, the stunned entertainer added as a rallying call, “And I promise you, it’s gonna take everyone in this room to unite.” Now six studio albums into his career, the North Carolinian always approaches things differently. Whether playing back-to-back nights in nearly 30 cities on his 2019 Double Down Tour or pushing himself to new creative limits with his recording process, Church has steadily amassed a faithful congregation – the Church Choir – since 2006’s release of “How ‘Bout You.” Many of those fans took to social media to congratulate the star, with an outpouring of comments proclaiming, “Congratulations Chief!” And it was those fans he was speaking to in the press conference following the awards show. “When you go to a concert and your favorite artist plays your favorite song, and you throw your arm around the person next to you, you don’t worry about whether he’s a Republican or a Democrat, whether he’s pro-life or pro-choice. You’re in that moment and you’re pulling on the rope the same way. I think what we’re missing right now in America is more of the stuff that unites us versus what divides us,” Church shared. “I swear — it’s going to be music that saves us… It’s going to be about how we do it, and how we do it responsibly, and how we show that this is how we’re gonna leave COVID in the dust.” Maren Morris, performing “The Bones,” was the night’s biggest winner, taking home three awards for CMA Single, Song and Female Vocalist of the Year. With an audience full of the biggest names in Country Music, safety was the top priority throughout the event’s production. “It was a privilege to bring the Country Music community together tonight,” says Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer. “We have worked tirelessly over the past few months to develop a safe environment that would allow us to deliver a show our fans have come to expect. We have followed all protocols established by the CDC, local health authorities and creative unions to ensure the safety of our staff, our crew and our artists at every turn. Every single person was tested prior to entering our footprint, with many individuals being tested repeatedly out of an abundance of caution. Our process enabled us to catch any positive test results immediately and before any of those individuals ever stepped foot into the venue. I am grateful for the grace and the patience shown to us during this process and to those individuals that were unable to join us tonight, you were greatly missed and we wish you and your families the very best.” Trahern added, “I am so proud to be a part of this community. It has been a very difficult year with many of us having suffered tremendous loss. My hope is that with the help of our incredible community of artists, we were able to shine a bit of light into the world through the magic of Country Music.” Jason Aldean, Brothers Osborne, Dierks Bentley and Ashley McBryde kicked off the night with a special collaboration honoring the late Charlie Daniels. Having felt the loss of many

legends this year, the show also honored Country greats Kenny Rogers and Joe Diffie with tributes from Little Big Town and Jon Pardi, respectively. Hosts Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker took the stage for a breathtaking collaboration of Mac Davis’ “In the Ghetto,” a tribute to the Country legend and three-time CMA Awards host. You could also hear a pin drop when McBryde took the stage to perform “One Night Standards,” while Rucker brought the feel-good vibes with his chart-topping “Beers & Sunshine.” Proudly honoring Country Music Hall of Fame trailblazer and 1975 CMA Awards co-host Charley Pride with the CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, Jimmie Allen took the stage for an emotional introduction followed by a surprise performance of “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” with Pride. Old Dominion took viewers back to 1980, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic film “Urban Cowboy,” performing Johnny Lee’s “Looking For Love.” Continuing the tradition of one-of-a-kind performances, “The 54th Annual CMA Awards” delivered the world television premiere of Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber’s No. 1 single “10,000 Hours,” captured remotely at Los Angeles’ famed Hollywood Bowl. Also, performing off-site, Keith Urban treated viewers to an intimate performance of “God Whispered Your Name” from his native homeland, Australia, dedicating his performance to frontline workers. Other highlights included Lambert delivering her

latest hit single “Settling Down” while Combs also took the stage for a stellar performance of “Cold As You.” Ingrid Andress made her CMA Awards performance debut with a spectacular and tearful rendition of her top hit “More Hearts Than Mine.” Thomas Rhett featuring host McEntire and Chris Tomlin filled the room with inspiration, while Chris Stapleton performed a stripped-back version of his latest single “Starting Over” with Morgane Stapleton. Pearce and Lady A’s Charles Kelley performed a soulful rendition of “I Hope You’re Happy Now.” Rounding out the evening, Kelsea Ballerini, Gabby Barrett featuring Charlie Puth and Brothers Osborne all wowed the audience with one-of-a-kind performances.
