Nashville Music Holiday guide: Sounds for the Season Ne-Yo Another Kind of Christmas
“NE-YO’s first-ever holiday album. He brings his own unique point-ofview to the season with five newlypenned tracks and reimagined versions of thoughtfully-selected Christmas classics – including “Someday At Christmas,” a plea for peace written by Motown songwriters Ron Miller and Bryan Wells for Stevie Wonder during the Vietnam War, and Marvin Gaye’s “I Want To Come Home For Christmas,” inspired by the plight of prisoners of war.”
Ana Gasteyer Sugar & Booze “Ana Gasteyer is sweetening up the Holidays with her new holiday album, Sugar & Booze. The collection of festive seasonal songs, classic and original, offer a swinging nod to the vintage holidays of yore with a modern touch and plenty of style. Original songs written by Gasteyer, include the modern nostalgic title track “Sugar & Booze” and the cheeky original with a retro-Cuban beat, “Secret Santa” featuring Maya Rudolph. In addition, the album features such classics like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Let it Snow.””
Scott Scovill My name is Christmas “Featuring a mix of the season’s most beloved holiday classics, along with catchy new originals, “My Name Is Christmas,” “Snow Day,” and more, My Name Is Christmas puts Scovill’s soulful baritone voice on display and captures the essence of the holiday season. Ernie Haase + Signature Sound put a little jazz into new Christmas album A Jazzy Little Christmas Highlights Quartet’s Faultless Harmonies
musicians who know the art form and who could steer the ship and help us vocally get to where we wanted to go was something that I’ll always look back on as one of the highlights of my career.” Billy Stritch has a pedigree in jazz circles that matches that of Ernie Haase and Signature Sound in Gospel music. Texas-born Stritch is the former music director for Tony Bennett and Liza Minelli among others, and is regarded as a top-tier jazz pianist. He is also no stranger to country music: with Nashville songwriter Sandy Knox, he cowrote the 1994 Grammy-award winning song, “Does He Love You,” recorded by Reba McEntire featuring Linda Davis.
Story by Preshias Harris Dedicated musicians all seem to have two things in common. They feel the need to stretch themselves creatively and they want to give back, particularly to those in greatest need. Take for example Ernie Haase + Signature Sound, the popular and highly respected Southern Gospel Quartet that has released more than twenty albums and numerous DVDs, often featuring other Christian artists. Their new album showcases a new side to their talent while maintaining the faultless harmonies and faith-based motivation that have made them global fan-favorites and multiple award winners. A Jazzy Little Christmas sees the quartet moving from their comfort zone of a Nashville studio to New York City to produce their first Holiday album in ten years. The group also jumped at the chance to include a charitable organization to benefit from the album. I sat down with Ernie Haase to talk about the new album, and I wanted to know what was his favorite thing about putting this album together. “It was being able to go outside the box for us,” said Haase. “Every record we’ve ever recorded has been here in Music City. The musicians here are excellent. But with this Jazzy Little Christmas, we wanted it to be authentic, and to be authentic you’ve got to have real jazz musicians to play. One afternoon, we met a fellow by the name of Billy Stritch who plays at Birdland Jazz Club and we got a conversation going and we just threw it out there. We said, ‘Hey, would you like to help co-produce a record for us?’ So being able to record those songs with true NashvilleMusicGuide.com 10
‘Giving back’ is an important part of the music business for Haase. “Our publicist came to us and said, ‘Hey, this New York thing keeps running, we’ve got an opportunity to partner with New York Cares and their Winter Wishes project,’ and we said, ‘Absolutely!’” Haase recalled. “That’s a great organization and we’re so happy that they were inclined to partner with us. So it’s a mutual love and respect and we hope we can bring some glad tidings and some joy not only to people who listen to the record but also to all the people that they’ll reach out to.” Winter Wishes is a program developed by the charity New York Cares to fulfill the wishes of low-income children, teens, families and seniors who may not otherwise receive a holiday gift. A Jazzy Little Christmas includes fourteen tracks beginning with a medley of “Happy Holiday” / ”It’s the Holiday Season” and wrapping up with another medley, “Peace on Earth” / “Silent Night.” In between are the quartet’s unique interpretations of Christmas favorites such as “O Holy Night,” “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” and “We Three Kings.” Additionally, there are two Ernie Haase originals, “Christmas in Manhattan” and “Sometimes I Wonder.” The album, released via Gaither Music Group, is available now at http://store.gaither.com/ and at Amazon.com, CBD.com and LifeWay.com. Ernie Haase + Signature Sound perform more than a hundred concerts each year. They have been nominated multiple times for Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards, winning on three occasions. They also received a Grammy nomination in 2010 for Best Southern / Country / Bluegrass Gospel Album for Dream On. Give a little Christmas: Gift of Giving Back Spotlight
Every winter we hear a lot of talk about the “season of giving” and we rush around buying and wrapping pretty new things for our family and friends. Our debit cards sigh as we put them back in our wallets at the end of a long day. But what about the folks who don’t have the ability to buy those gifts? I never had much growing up, but we never did without. As an adult, I have climbed above that poverty line and my kids have much more than they need, but I know how it felt to pinch pennies, cut corners, even pay a bill late in order to buy a small gift for my kids. Those years while we were building our life without support were harder than I hope they ever know. It was during those years that Give A Little Christmas was born. My best friend and fellow editor, Krys, was interviewing a friend for our previous magazine when he mentioned Santa Claus. He said he had always wanted to give presents to homeless children with his long white beard and his rosycheeked wife. Krys ran with it and helped Glenn and Dottie Tubb start making plans. I will never forget our first event. Joey doesn’t climb out of bed easily and he had a particularly rough fall, recovering from a crushed hand. I had lost a lot of my odd jobs to his physical therapy and we had all been in a bit of a funk. That morning I told the boys
that we had to go sing for a bunch of kids and help Santa give them presents. I still have never seen Joey jump out of bed so quickly.
Our boys came alive when they met Santa and Mrs. Claus. They immediately went to work wrapping, distributing and helping however they could. Joey kept serving the Clauses plates of cookies and cups of milk. They glowed. That was the day I finally understood the spirit of giving, as it illuminated my children. Over the last seven years, Give A Little Christmas (GAL for short) has changed and grown into a blossoming 501c3. Glenn and Dottie had to retire for health reasons, I became the assistant director and our boys eventually learned the truth about the North Pole: it’s actually Southern. Elves are frequently long-haired teenage boys with slight drawls who look very cute in their fuzzy red hats. GAL serves parts of Wilson, Davidson and Rutherford counties, collecting and distributing toys for families who rarely qualify for any other assitance. We service families with sudden life emergencies of all sizes from inclome loss due to totaled cars and unexpected injury expenses to big life emergenices like severe health problems, house fires, domestic violence and more. This Christmas we already have over 160 kids signed up.

How The Elves Work
Collection Box Locations
1. Collect! We host toy drives all over and all the time. We even have toy drives in the summer, a list of confirmed drives is included here.
Nutrishop 300 Pleasant Grove Rd #320 Mt. Juliet, TN
2. Wrap! We throw wrapping parties where “elves” help us wrap the donations and label and bag them for distribution. 3. Party! We throw a big party for the kids to come meet Santa. Not all families can attend, but those who do receive large black bags out the back door while the kids are entertained. This way they wake to toys under their tree without us having to slide down every chimney. 4. Adopt! We welcome companies and organizations to adopt entire families. We especially like to adopt them out when the families have special-needs children whose gifts are rarely in the donation bins.

As a special bonus, all contributions of time, gifts and money are qualifying donations and can get you a nice tax write-off or those much-needed volunteer hours.

“EMOTIONAL HONESTY” - MAGS “Emotional Honesty” is the strongest offering yet from Mags McCarthy (known simply as Mags) the hugely-talented Irish singer, dancer and multiinstrumentalist. Based in her homeland of Ireland and growing up on the family farm, she still plays the fiddle she inherited from her grandfather. An international star who has toured more than 40 countries, Mags feels equally at home on Nashville’s Music Row. It was there that she first heard “Emotional Honesty” that had just been written by David M. Ross and Steve O’Brien. Mags does full justice to the song with her powerful rendition of the lyrics and faultless fiddle-playing, and her producer/manager Michael Anthony has created a powerful production that matches the spirit and emotion of the lyrics. Find the song and the music video at magsmccarthy.com “MAYBE NOT” - TEMECULA ROAD The new single is a sweet, flirty pop-country song that takes full advantage of the young trio’s spot-on harmonies. Sisters Emma and Maddie Salute have a sound that feels like a blend of Maddie & Tae, Maren Morris and a hint of Kelsea Ballerini, but the addition of Dawson Anderson’s male vocals gives the trio a unique sound. The playful lyrics hint at a date that might or might not lead to something more: “Maybe here and now that’s all we got / And maybe / You’re going to hate me / Maybe, I won’t be calling you baby / Or maybe not.” The song has an interesting history in that it started out as a slow ballad. However, Emma said that after playing it on the road for over a year it took on a new life as a fun, flirty more up-tempo love song. “Maybe Not” is Temecula Road’s third single release this year following “Fades” and “Never Knew I Needed You” which hit Top 5 and Top 15 respectively on Radio Disney Country’s Top 50 Chart. Listen to the song at temecularoad.com “A ROAD AND A RADIO” - CHARLES ESTEN After finding international fame in the role of Deacon Clayborn in the hit TV show Nashville, Charles Esten has transitioned from actor to a career as a successful singer and songwriter. Between July 2016 and July 2017, he set a world record by releasing a new song (all of which he wrote or co-wrote) every week for 52 weeks as part of his #EverySingleFriday project. His new single, “A Road and a Radio” is an uptempo country rocker that does exactly what the title says. This is a song that will appeal to fans of artists like Keith Urban and Blake Shelton or early hits from the Eagles. Esten has a strong fan base in Europe and spent October playing major venues in England, Scotland and Ireland as part of the Country Music Week Tour. Before setting off on the tour, Esten debuted “A Road and a Radio” during a performance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. More info at charlesesten.com/

“MAN ENOUGH NOW” - CHRIS BRANDI Chris Bandi is honest enough to admit the mistakes he has made in life – particularly his love life – and he has turned these life-lessons into songs. The latest, “Man Enough Now,” looks back on a failed relationship that he is man enough now to understand how he made it go wrong. In the chorus he sings “Givin’ you the run around / Runnin’ from forever / It’s too bad, we happened when we did / Cause I’ve learned a lot about life since then.” Described as a ‘coming of age’ song, “Man Enough Now” was cowritten by Bandi with Jason Duke and Jason Massey. Bandi approaches these disastrous moments in former relationships with a sense of humor that must strike a chord with many listeners as the official music video has already passed 6 million views. Find the song at chrisbandi.com/ “LIVIN’ MY BEST LIFE” - A THOUSAND HORSES The new single from Thousand Horses is an uptempo, guitar-heavy party song about the fun things in life – mainly beer, music, girls, hanging out with friends and, uh, more beer! (Watch the official music video and you’ll see what I mean.) “Livin’ My Best Life” is the first single from their next album that is set for release in 2020. The song and the album – recorded at the famous RCA Studio A in Nashville – reunites the band with the currently superhot producer Dave Cobb. “Livin’ My Best Life” is the perfect song to play in your car, where you can turn the volume up high and sing along to it. With a catchy blend of country, Southern rock and good old rock and roll, it helps you forget your problems and join in the fun. Music, video and more at athousandhorses.com
“I WANNA LIVE LIKE ELVIS” - TG SHEPPARD TG Sheppard has recorded his first studio album in more than 20 years and released it earlier this year. He was motivated to go into the recording studio again after he heard the demo for the song “I Wanna Live Like Elvis.” Sheppard was 16 when he first met Elvis Presley and they remained friends until Elvis died, so this song means a lot to him. It’s a playful, fun song that includes all the things we imagine when we think of Elvis’ life: Graceland, Cadillacs, private jets, blue suede shoes and lounging around with Priscilla Presley in silk pajamas! (Sheppard got Priscilla’s approval before he recorded the song.) “I Wanna Live Like Elvis” is a lighthearted tribute to ‘The King’ by one of his longtime friends. ALBUM REVIEW SPOTLIGHT:
SKIN BY
GEORGETTE JONES
Distinctive vocalist and daughter of country royalty George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Georgette Jones knows a thing or two about heartache, resilience and perseverance. As the only child of George Jones and Tammy Wynette—and named after both—the expectations for her have been borderline insurmountable. Georgette Jones is like the daughter of country music. Add on top what a difficult relationship her two Country Music Hall of Fame parents had, and how both of their estates have been embroiled in battles of one sort or another over the years, it’s a miracle she’s even survived. With her new album, Skin, the songstress collaborates with Grammy® winning icon Vince Gill on “I Know What You Did Last Night.” “I’m over the moon excited about this project as it’s my first time to be in full control. I selected each song as well as each musician on this record. We have the perfect team to make this project feel authentic and it’s 100% me. I co-wrote the title ‘Skin,’ with my good friend Ashlee Hewitt and I’m thrilled to have a Bobby Braddock co-write on this record titled, ‘End it With Hello,’ since he wrote so many of my parents most significant songs. This project is truly a dream come true and I could not have done it without Tim McAbee,” Georgette Jones shared. Skin really is a tour de force of songwriting, and underscores the importance of being patient and thorough in your hunt for compositions as opposed to taking what’s easy like so many performers unfortunately do. In a just world, multiple songs on this album would be radio hits.
As enjoyable as the heartfelt songs are, it’s the energy and enthusiasm found on multiple tracks that make Skin such an gratifying listen, and really sets it off against the dizzying list of new titles being released in country lately. Georgette Jones isn’t slowing down, she’s mashing on the gas on tracks like the rambunctious “I Known What You Did Last Night,” the twangy “Call It Gone,” and the rockin’ “Goodbye Going Down.” If 90’s country that combined a little bit of a rock edge with twang is the hot commodity everyone is claiming it is, then Georgette’s Skin should be raising a blip on everyone’s radar. So well-produced and expertly played and arranged, there’s nothing to second guess here. It’s a record that’s both fun and fulfilling. For more information visit: georgettejones.net SKIN TRACK LISTING 1. Skin (written by Georgette Jones, Ashlee Hewitt) 2. I Know What You Did Last Night (with Vince Gill) (written by Karyn Rochelle, Al Anderson) 3. I Call it Gone (written by Marla Cannon Goodman, Jennifer Hanson, Michael Heeney) 4. “I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O LORD, I will sing praise” – Psalm 101:1
ALBUM NEWS: After almost 15 years at the top of his format, reigning ACM “Artist of the Decade” Jason Aldean has seen trends come and go. But after all that time, he continues to hold his ground making modern albums with an old-school soul. Jason’s much anticipated album 9 was released Nov. 22nd on Broken Bow Records. Jason says, “Early on I always thought if we ever got to make nine albums, I’m going to call it 9. It was my baseball number growing up, and it’s just kind of always been my lucky number.” To celebrate, Aldean offers fans an immediate preview of the new album with the release of four of its tracks. “Blame It On You” sways with a half-drunk realization that we make our own problems, “I Don’t Drink Anymore” serves a 100-proof hook, “Keep It Small Town” reminds that welllived lives don’t have to be complicated and the album’s fiery lead single “We Back” rounds out the first-released songs, all out now at all digital partners, with “We Back” also available at radio. Aldean has scored 23 Number Ones and is the only Country act in history to top the all-genre Billboard 200 four times (in a row, no less), racking up 15 billion streams and more NashvilleMusicGuide.com 28
Known for a remarkable aptitude at crafting music with character-driven storylines, singer/songwriter Erin Enderlin unveiled her first new full-length album since 2017 with the release of Faulkner County Nov. 1. Faulkner County arrives amidst mounting anticipation generated through a series of digital EPs Enderlin released earlier this year. Those EPs, released roughly in eight-week intervals, garnered significant traction in the digital music space and led to Enderlin’s first significant playlisting on Spotify (Nashville Stripped, Next From Nashville, Wild Country), Apple Music (Country Roads, Speaking Easy) and Amazon Music (Fresh Folk & Americana). Enderlin’s fall has been defined by exciting career firsts and incredible momentum. After sold-out shows in her first-ever UK tour, she returned to Nashville to showcase at AmericanaFest. She’ll close out 2019 having played more than 100 shows. Tour dates, music and more at erinenderlin.com/
ARTIST NEWS: Chris Young made his directorial debut with the music video for his newest hit, “Drowning.” Co-directed with Native 31 Films Producer and Director Jeff Johnson, the video opens with Young holding a photo of Adam Carnes, his longtime friend whose loss is memorialized in the song’s lyrics. With a universal message that gives voice to the often-overwhelming emotions of grief, interspersed throughout the “Drowning” music video are moving tributes to spouses, children, parents, siblings and friends from concertgoers at the Richmond, VA date of his Raised On Country World Tour 2019. “I’ve been so amazed at the reaction to this song,” shared Young. “I wrote it with two friends as a moment of healing and had no idea it would touch so many people before it was even chosen as a single. The video, combining so many personal moments alongside a live performance, totally embodies that and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.” More at chrisyoungcountry.com

Some of the tracks on this album were even a revelation to Rex Allen, Jr. “I had never heard “Blue Dream” before,” he said. “Not only had I never heard that track before, but I had never heard him sing it. I worked with dad on around 200 performances in my early life. The same goes for ‘The Blue Light Waltz.’ I’d never heard that song before, either! They are just gorgeous pieces of Western material with the Sons of the Pioneers singing background vocals. The world needs to hear these songs.” Country Rewind Records’ Thomas Gramuglia, rescued the master tapes which have been in storage for nearly 50 years.

Dwight Yoakam Receives BMI President’s Award at 2019 BMI Country Awards BMI presented its 2019 BMI Country Awards last night, honoring the prolific musical career of BMI President’s Award recipient Dwight Yoakam, as well as the Country Songwriter, Song and Publisher of the Year. The 67th annual event, which is the genre’s oldest awards ceremony, also celebrated the songwriters and publishers of the mostperformed country songs of the previous year. BMI President and CEO Mike O’Neill hosted the ceremony at the Company’s office in Nashville, along with Jody Williams, BMI Vice President, Creative, Nashville. Yoakam, who was named this year’s BMI President’s Award honoree, joins an elite list of songwriters including Kenny Chesney, P!nk, Harlan Howard, Brooks & Dunn, Pitbull, Adam Levine, Billy Sherrill, Toni Braxton, and others who have distinctly and profoundly influenced the music industry. During the evening, rising country star Jon Pardi, supergroup The Highwomen, with guitar aficionado Jason Isbell, and country purist Margo Price with the legendary Bob Weir, paid musical tribute to Yoakam. Pardi brought his signature twang for an old-school rendition of “Guitars, Cadillacs,” while Margo Price and Bob Weir gave a rocking outlaw version of “Fast as You.” Finally, Nashville’s hottest supergroup, The Highwomen, serenaded the crowd with the perennial Yoakam favorite “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere,” with Isbell leading the band on guitar. Early in the evening, Mike O’Neill and Jody Williams presented Del and Dane Bryant with the inaugural Evergreen Award for “Rocky Top,” written by BMI writers Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. The Evergreen Award recognizes those one-of-a-kind songs that have left an unforgettable imprint on our lives and an enduring legacy through the years. In addition to the presentation of the award, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder performed a rousing bluegrass version of the song. Senator Lamar Alexander, BMI Icon Dolly Parton, and two-time Superbowl winner and former UT quarterback Peyton Manning contributed videos paying homage to the song’s place in the history of country music, as well as within the state of Tennessee. The coveted Songwriter of the Year award was presented to first-time winner Nicolle Galyon and third-time winner Ross Copperman, who are each responsible for four of this year’s award-winning songs. Galyon is the first female to be named BMI Country Songwriter of the Year since Taylor Swift took the title in 2010. Her writing credits include Lee Brice’s “Boy,” Keith Urban’s “Coming Home,” Lady Antebellum’s “Heartbreak” and Dan + Shay’s “Tequila,” which was named 2019 BMI Song of the Year later in the evening. Copperman, who also took the title this year, is responsible for Kenny Chesney’s “Get Along,” Blake Shelton’s “I Lived It,” Justin Moore’s “Kinda Don’t Care” and Dierks Bentley’s “Woman, Amen.” Dan + Shay’s “Tequila” was named 2019 BMI Country Song of the Year. Published by Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Group and written by BMI Songwriter of the Year recipient Nicolle Galyon and ASCAP’s Dan Smyers and Jordan Reynolds, the immensely successful crossover track was the most-performed country song of the year. Taking home the Publisher of the Year accolade was Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Group, which is responsible for 24 of the 50 most-performed songs of the year, including megahits such as Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy,” Keith Urban’s “Coming Home” featuring Julia Michaels, Dan + Shay’s “Tequila,” Jason Aldean’s “Drowns The Whiskey” featuring Miranda Lambert, and Morgan Wallen’s “Up Down,” featuring Florida Georgia Line. 2019 Ascap Country Music Awards With a star-studded lineup rivaling Broadway’s brightest neon lights, the 57th annual ASCAP Country Music Awards celebrated the industry’s biggest names on Monday, November 11 in Nashville. The evening was full of milestone moments for ASCAP’s family of country songwriters and publishers. Hitmaker Ashley Gorley cemented his place among country music’s greats, earning his unprecedented seventh ASCAP Country Music Songwriter of the Year honor. Pop and R&B songwriter Steven Battey won Song of the Year for his very first country hit, Luke Combs’s “One Number Away.” And for the seventh year in a row, Warner Chappell Music was named ASCAP Country Music Publisher of the Year for shepherding a record-setting number of country songs to the top of the charts. The stars came out to pay homage to their comrades in song. Kelsea Ballerini and Little Big Town were both on hand to honor songwriter Hillary Lindsey (“Girl Crush,” “Jesus, Take the Wheel”) with the ASCAP Global Impact Award. Brett Young, who earned our Songwriter-Artist of the Year Award in 2018, was on hand to pass the torch to this year’s winners, Matthew Ramsey and Trevor Rosen of Old Dominion, and actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen (also an ASCAP member) added a touch of Hollywood as they presented the ASCAP Vanguard Award to their friends, Brothers Osborne. From the opening performance of “Tequila” (written by Dan + Shay’s Dan Smyers and songwriter Jordan Reynolds) to Gorley, Bentley and Jon Nite’s moving rendition of “Living,” the 2019 ASCAP Country Music Awards were defined by spectacular performances. But in an evening full of unforgettable live music, a clear highlight was a tribute to the great Randy Travis, winner of the ASCAP Founders Award. Carrie Underwood turned in a stunning “Promises,” and Garth Brooks sang “Forever and Ever, Amen” with the sincerity of someone who has loved Travis’s music for decades. “This man saved country music single-handedly,” commented Brooks from the stage. “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Randy Travis.” ASCAP Founders Award Randy Travis Song Wrter of the Year Ashley Gorley Global Impact Award Hillary Lindsey Vanguard Award Brothers Osborne Songwriter-Artist of the Year Matthew Ramsey & Trevor Rosen of Old Dominion Song of the Year “One Number Away” Writers: Steven Battey Publishers: Mall B Publishing Publisher of rhe Year Warner/Chappel Music Publishing MOST PERFORMED SONGS (NEXT PAGE) *** Indicates a Top 3 ASCAP country song

53rd Annual CMA awards: women in Country Unite
Women in Country Music united for a historic, opening performance at “The 53rdAnnual CMA Awards” with a nearly nine-minute medley that saluted 87-year-old country queen Loretta Lynn, who looked on from a seat in the audience, as Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles and Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman sang Lynn’s hit “You’re Looking at Country” and the Highwomen quartet delivered “Your Good Girl Is Gonna Go Bad.”
sic video for “Rainbow,” her song of support for societal underdogs, which she wrote with frequent collaborators Shane McAnally and Natalie Hemby and included on her sonically and thematically expansive album, “Golden Hour.” One of the musical highlights of the show was her duet with 86-year-old Willie Nelson on “Rainbow Connection,” a song introduced four decades ago in “The Muppet Movie,” as sung by Kermit the Frog.
The groundbreaking number led by Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton featured Terri Clark, Sara Evans, Crystal Gayle, The Highwomen (comprised of Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires), Martina McBride, Jennifer Nettles, Tanya Tucker and Gretchen Wilson, each performing iconic Country songs for a monumental decades-spanning medley that has never been seen before but thank goodness for today’s technology so that we can watch it over and over again! Garth Brooks took the night’s biggest honor, Entertainer of the Year, and Album of the Year went to Maren Morris. In collecting her first female vocalist trophy from the CMA, 31-year-old Musgraves said, “I feel that the female energy, the female spirit is really important right now. I think the earth needs it right now.” Earlier in the night, Kacey Musgraves won for music Video of the Year for “Rainbow,” while Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus won Musical Event of the Year for their remix of “Old Town Road.” Blake Shelton took the stage to win the first award of the night for Single of the Year, “God’s Country.”Vocal Group of the Year went to Old Dominion. The other pre-telecast award went to Musgraves for muNashvilleMusicGuide.com 44
Miranda Lambert had a spark in her eye while singing “It All Comes Out in the Wash”. We were treated to Pink and Chris Stapleton doing “Love Me Anyway”. It was one of those performances that remind you why awards shows can be so awesome. It got a much deserved standing ovation. Old Dominion performed “One Man Band.” Later on in the show they won their second Vocal Group of the Year award. Luke Combs was all dressed-up when he accepted Song of the Year for “Beautiful Crazy”, but when he returned later to sing “Beer Never Broke My Heart” he was in short sleeves and a cap. And then the suit came back when he won Male Vocalist of the Year. Kelsea Ballerini went solo with her guitar while performing “Homecoming Queen?”. And then she launched into

“Girl Crush”, which kicked off another succession of female performers that included Lindsay Ell, Runaway June, Maddie & Tae, Ashley McBryde, Carly Pearce . . . and Little Big Town. The Lady Antebellum and Halsey collaboration featured stripped-down versions of Lady A’s “What If I Never Get Over You”, and Halsey’s “Graveyard”. They sounded great together. Then the guitars came out and the volume turned up when Brothers Osborne joined Brooks & Dunn for “Hard Workin’ Man”…. (and women too!) As a night dedicated to women in country music seemed right for a pregnant MAREN MORRIS to perform her song “Girl”. She also won Album of the Year for “Girl”. Blake Shelton did a nice thing while performing “God’s Country”. He showcased his fiddle player Jenee Fleenor, which was cool for two reasons.
