Letter from Publisher & Editor
Welcome music fans to Tennessee! We hope that you enjoy all that the festivals and conferences will be bringing you this year. CMA Fest and Bonnaroo are happening the same weekend again this year so the amount of people in Middle Tennessee over that week will be chaotic as usual. In light of recent events, we pray that everyone stays safe and has a wonderful time visiting our beautiful region of Tennessee. With that being said, let’s dive right into CMA Fest. We will be partnering with the Beauty of Music’s Sherri Justice this year for live interviews as well. You will notice that the Chevrolet River Front Stage among numerous other CMA sanctioned stages are free to the public this year and the line ups are phenomenal. You can check them out in this issue. We encourage all to take advantage of this opportunity to see these Country artists courtesy of CMA for free but remember to drink plenty of water and lots of sunblock. The sun and heat will be brutal again this year.
check the digital version under www.nashvillmusicguide. com/back-issues. The next conference we will be covering is Summer NAMM. We attended the Music Biz Conference in May and enjoyed learning about industry trends as well as hearing from leaders that were willing to pass on their knowledge and experience. One of our Editors, Amanda Andrews went down to Gulf Shores to cover Hangout Fest which you will be able to read more about in this issue as well. Also in this issue you will find pictures from events submitted by our awesome crew of photographers that includes Alexandra Arielle and Danielle Del Valle. Speaking of an amazing crew, we would like to take a moment to extend a special thank you to our contributor, mentor and friend, Preshias Harris for everything that she has done for NMG over the past twenty-plus years. Our prayers are also with her during this time in hopes for a speedy recovery with her health. She is the energizer bunny - nothing seems to keep her down. NMG Staff will be covering Bonnaroo as well and we have included informational previews of both inside this issue. Amanda Andrews has been covering Roo for us for over nine years and continually manages to keep track of everything happening in Nashville while she is on The Farm too. NMG is looking forward to expanding our staff and are currently hiring commission sales agents. If you or someone you know is interested please contact us.
We are half-way through 2019 and it has already been an exciting year for NMG. We have added a new digital mobile service for promoting our advertisers and supporters. It will be running around town rolling ads and supporting those who support us in our 20 plus years of publicizing singers writers and musicians. In our last issue, we did a full feature of artists from Country Radio Seminar that you should be looking at for this year - if you missed it head on over to our website and NashvilleMusicGuide.com 4
There’s lots of fun to be had but if you plan to drink, please do it responsibly. Get a cab/Uber/Lyft/DD to get you to your final destination so you arrive alive. If you are taking photos at any of the events happening around town be sure to tag us on Twitter/Instagam/Facebook and use the hashtag #NashMusicGuide so we can follow you and share your posts!

finally from the Bobby Bones Show – Bobby Bones, Ray Slater and Eddie Garcia. Country music icon Naomi Judd, returns as a play-by-play announcer. The game reached its highest ever attendance last year with artist participation by Reba McEntire, Billy Ray Cyrus, Sara Evans, Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe and many others. A highlight of the event each year is the “meeting on the mound” of a City of Hope patient and bone marrow donor meeting for the first time. Last year, leukemia survivor Nicole Schulz met her lifesaving donor Rian Lawrence at the mound. There wasn’t a dry eye in the stands. CMT and the PEDIGREE brand are teaming up for the first “Paws & Play” Music Festival in Nashville on Sunday, June 3 at Cumberland Park (592 S 1st St.) from 1:00-5:00 PM. Dogs (and their humans) can participate in a number of family-friendly events, including performances by country singer/songwriter, The Voice champion and CMT Music Award winner Cassadee Pope, doggie yoga, canine massage, games, photo opps, food trucks, a beer and wine garden and much more. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities for young women in country music, Nashville-based production company Todd Cassetty Welding Service set out to do something about it. Early this year, the company began auditioning female singer-songwriters and in March launched a weekly live show, Song Suffragettes, with a rotating group of performers. Since then, the Monday night show has already outgrown its original venue, 3rd and Lindsley Backstage, and relocated to downtown Nashville’s Listening Room Café. It typically draws a crowd of 100-plus people a week, an eclectic mix of industry execs, other singer-songwriters, local music fans and tourists. It’s now the venue’s largest regularly scheduled weekly event. It has also attracted a presenting sponsor, Country Outfitter, which provides the performers with boots and gives away a pair at every show with the help of show host Kelly Sutton, a Nashville television personality. More importantly, the series is providing needed exposure for the young women working to establish themselves in the mainstream country music world.
The 28th annual Celebrity Softball Game returns to First Tennessee Park on Saturday June 9, and will bring together the biggest names in the world of country music, sports, and television to benefit City of Hope and our fight against cancer, diabetes, and other serious diseases. Monday, June 4th’s lineup at the Listening Room will include Kalie Shorr, Lauren Weintraub, Jenna Paulette, Tasji Bachman and Lexi Mackenzie. On Monday, June 11 they will be celebrating their 4th anniversary at Analog and will feature a “Change The Conversation” panel. Performers are TBA. For more info: www. songsuffragettes.com
Nashville Non-Profit, YEAH!, Empowers Young People Through Music at Annual Southern Girls Rock Camp & Tennessee Teens Rock Camp In a time of movements like #MeToo and March For Our Lives, women and young people all over America are speaking up to make real change in our nation. YEAH! (Youth Empowerment through Arts and Humanities), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Nashville, TN, is continuing to make those voices stronger using a tool so abundant in Nashville that it has become synonymous with the city’s name: music. Since 2003, YEAH! has succeeded in providing a safe learning environment for teens that empowers them not only in the arts but in life skills, volunteerism, and community service. The organization creates programming, such as Southern Girls Rock Camp and Tennessee Teens Rock Camp, that values collaboration over competition and seeks to give youth the tools they need to create the world in which they want to live. These camps have gained praise and support throughout the music industry, from performers like Wanda Jackson, Margo Price, Cary Ann Hearst (of Shovels and Rope), and Those Darlins to industry professionals like NPR Music correspondent Ann Powers, Warner Music Group’s Emilee Warner, and contributing music critic Marissa R. Moss (Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, Nashville Scene, The Bluegrass Situation, etc.) Southern Girls Rock Camp (Nashville) July 9-14, 2018 at Vanderbilt University Tennessee Teens Rock Camp (Nashville) July 16-21, 2018 at Vanderbilt University Southern Girls Rock Camp (Murfreesboro) July 23-28, 2018 at Middle Tennessee State University “When people ask my why women are gaining a more powerful place within the rock world in 2018, I always mention rock camp in my answer,” says NPR’s Ann Powers. “Rock camps for girls around the world are a key element in empowering new generations of girls to take up instruments, form connections with each other and speak their minds. Southern Girls Rock Camp was one of the first in the nation, and over time, it’s become a key presence not only in the lives of so many girls and women but in Nashville’s rock scene itself. I wish I’d had a spiritual home like SGRRC when I was a baby punk rocker years ago!” The organization’s flagship program, Southern Girls Rock Camp in Nashville, is a week-long summer music and arts camp for girls and gender non-conforming youth ages 10-17 that takes place at Vanderbilt University. YEAH! also offers a co-ed session, Tennessee Teens Rock Camp, that welcomes all youth ages 10-17. Campers learn to play an instrument of their choice, regardless of skill-level, which is provided for them through the duration of the camp. On the Saturday of their session, the campers are given an exciting opportunity to form their own band, collaborate on a song, and perform at Jack White’s famed Third Man Records venue. In an effort to reach all of Middle Tennessee, another Southern Girls Rock Camp session is also offered at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. These camps recognize the potential of every young person to be a strong, talented, creative, and empowered individual while providing a safe space where everyone rocks. As a enthusiastic program volunteer, country singer-songwriter Margo Price reflects, “Southern Girls Rock Camp is one of the most amazing programs I have ever been a part of. It was an honor to talk with passionate, young girls and to teach them mic technique, songwriting, and street smarts inside the music business. I wish that there was something like this when I was growing up.” YEAH! took note of sentiments like Margo’s and Ann’s and recently announced the new Ladies Rock Camp for female and gender non-conforming adults over the age of 18. The four-day program is occurring March 22-25, 2018 and is designed to empower adults from many walks of life through music education and community building. The sliding scale registration fee is taxdeductible and goes directly to YEAH!’s Scholarship Program, which provides even more young individuals a chance to attend Southern Girls Rock Camp and Tennessee Teens Rock Camp. The Bonnaroo Experience Thousands of happy campers, hundreds of acres of Tennessee nature, 150 epic performances, 10+stages of music. Add in some top notch comedy acts, a silent disco, an official Bonnaroo Cinema, and you’ve got yourself a damn good time. Four of the best days. Ever. If you have been to Roo before, you already known What Stage, Which Stage, This Tent, That Tent, and last year’s reinvention of The Other Tent as The Other which is now a stage. Making a reappearance this year is Kalliope. Kalliope brings mind-blowing light shows, an earth-shattering sound system, and a whole bunch of pyro. Artists like Skrillex, Odesza, Cherub and more have climbed her heights in past years, making musical magic high above the dancing crowds till sunrise. 2018 will feature the inevitable surprise drop-ins, but who exactly will grace the stage amongst the flames this year? There’s only one way to find out… stay tuned for the next issue. Bonnaroo is know for it’s super jam experiences from all genres and in past years Sunday’s were the Bluegrass Situation super jam. This year the Grand Ole Opry will be filling the slot. The Grand Ole Opry®, the show that made country music famous, will stage its first-ever show from the famed Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN on Sun., June 10 featuring Opry members Bobby Bare, Del McCoury Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Riders In The Sky as well as Brothers Osborne, LANCO, Nikki Lane, Lucie Silvas, and more. The Nashvillebased Opry has rarely in its 92-year history taken its iconic show outside Music City, on those occasions visiting prestigious venues such as New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center.
Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo is just one of the several planned ways the festival will be celebrating its host community of 17 years. Also new this year Bonnaroo is partnering with Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. and the local Maker space Fort NashvilleMusicGuide.com 16
Houston to create The Ville (formerly The Grind). Located in the campgrounds, The Ville will feature local Nashville food, art and more, including Third Man Records, 8th & Roast Coffee and Project 615. The new offerings also include Farm to Taco Nashville and Prince’s famous and legendary hot chicken, known worldwide as the original and gold standard in hot chicken. T-Pain will even be hanging for karaoke one night! Plazas like The Ville are located within the campgrounds. It’s funny to think that when Roo started, the main place was Shakedown St. and now each camp ground is like it’s own community. It would not be surprising if before long you can reserve camping in certain pods (now referred to as plazas) to be near specific plazas. They are well on their way already with specialty campgrounds like Solo Roo’ers Camp For folks ridin’ solo seeking friends; SheROO by MOTHERSHIP (Benefiting The Tegan & Sara Foundation) for Woman and nonbinary identified Bonnaroovians to camp together; Fan SuperJam™ Camp (Feat. Artist Tyler Childers) for musicians looking to share, learn, & collab. There’s also complementary Family Camping and Soberoo Camping for those interested. But, back to the plazas... Camping at Bonnaroo is hardly “camping” by most definitions of the word (unless your local park offers free wifi, karaoke, showers, celebrity surprises, late night parties, and more… sounds like an awesome park). Plazas are strategically located public places throughout the campgrounds for the community to gather, enjoy art & activities, as well as access amenities, info, medical or other safety needs. No matter where you’re camped, you’ll have a plaza nearby. We’re taking inspiration from the most beautiful public spaces around the world that bring people together as a community to have an awesome time. Plaza 2 is home to The Garage and The Love Shack. Get excited for a tequila bar and communal grilling experience at The Love Shack, by the Tennessee & Texas food icon Tim Love! Expect special a appearance by Durand Jones and, of course, Tim Love himself. Daily activities in Plaza 2 consist of Rhythm & Flow Drum Circle & hoop Jam from 12-1pm; Face Painting & Glitter Dusting from 1- 4pm; Yoga from 4-5pm; and Compliment-Are Happy Hour from 6-7pm. “Wake Up Call” Thursday morning dance party form 10am-12 and then come back for the Pineapple Party 12:30-5:30
am. Saturday from 12:30-5:30am is Bonnaroo Bedtime Stories and Deep Sunrise Sessions and then to wrap up the weekend, the Last Chance Sunday Dance is from 12:30-2am. Plaza 3: That’s right, House of Yes, the weird, wild, and wonderful night club, performance space and creative venue from Brooklyn, NY will be bringing everything they do and more to one of the funky NEW barns in the Bonnaroo campgrounds! Known for Little Cinema, insane circus shows, interactive events and fabulous dance parties, the House Of Yes is built on a foundation of positivity and fun where everyone is welcome. It’s gonna be wild and Located in the heart of the campgrounds, right along 3rd avenue leading up to The Arch entrance to Centeroo.

While there, you can kick back in the climatecontrolled, color-filled dome as you keep tabs on the festival on our giant-screen, live concert feed.
The Dirty Circus Show will be daily at 10pm; House of Yes will hold nightly parties from 1:30-5am - Dirty Thursday; Throwback Friday; DiscoTechnique Dance (Sat.) and Sparkle Sunday. There will also be appearances by Channels, Daisy Press, Kae Burke, Anya Sapozhnikova, David Kiss, Dropkat, Madame Vivien V, Rawb Lane, Pixel Chick, Kyle Driggs, Francoise Voranger, Andrea Murillo, Nikki Ortiz, Ariel Valeira and Stefanie Clouse. Plaza 6 is The Well. The Well(ness) Plaza is here to quench Bonnaroovian’s thirst of body AND mind with healthy and mindful activities galore. Why? Because you can have an awesome time while ALSO being awesome to yourself. Check out this new barn and the areas around it for healthy foods, yoga, meditation, Crystals 101, the Roo Run (and After party), chill listening parties, exercise meet ups, and more. Taking place within the brand new Plaza 6 barn “The Well”, Tonalism is an ALL NIGHT ambient happening partly inspired by the happenings of the 50s and 60s. The events features live performances and DJ sets in an environment transformed by projections, installations, and various multimedia elements. Visitors are encouraged to bring pillows, cushions, or blankets to lay down and listen. Matt Shultz, a veteran of Bonnaroo as both a performer and fan, is expressing his creative vision through a brand new experience in the campgrounds for the Bonnaroo community. Plaza 9 is being completely transformed by the creative mind of Matt Shultz. Come get ROOCHARGED, ROOLAX, ROOFLECT, and hit ROOSET in the brand new barn, and experience interactive art installations, outrageous parties, and more. Friday night Glitch Mob will be doing a late night DJ set. And then there’s “Saturday” Morning Cartoons like Mickey, Minnie & Mr. Magoo. While there is always something going on, a lot of people forget to stop and remember the GREEN initiatives that Bonnaroo strives to promote throughout the festival. Many don’t realize that if you turn in your recycling you get credits for Roo merch and more and that most of the vendors have program incentives for keeping the Farm clean too. Just when you thought life on The Farm couldn’t get any more fun, here comes M&Ms Caramel to take your Bonnaroo
Speaking of food ... There’s nothing better than late nights at Bonnaroo and there is no better late-night snack than our new Totino’s Mini Snack Bites. SINGLE REVIEW: “Kiss Me Goodbye’ by Bailey James
By andrew miller
Bar Frog Music recording artist Bailey James is continuing her exciting year with full force. James has already shown us her spunky side. Now we are getting to hear her in new light with her new single “Kiss Me Goodbye.” Bailey has proven time and time again that she has sophisticated vocals well beyond her years. This song is slower than what we are used to hearing from James, but she still has her sass at full swing. The guitar riffs are spot on as expected, and they pair perfectly to her beautiful voice. Her vocal range isn’t the only thing showing experience; her story telling has grown too with this female anthem. With lines including “Tell me I’m your one and only.” We know she’s talking about a love that not many people at her age have felt. Written by James, Shelby Lee Lowe and Jeanie McQuinn, “Kiss Me Goodbye” was produced by Jeffery Teague and is the first release off an upcoming project which is slated to be released this year. Bailey James has had a busy year. With her Top 40 hit, “Run Girl,” a ever-growing performance run, and interviewing; “Kiss Me Goodbye” is giving her more momentum for things to come. James may be 15, but her vocals and lyrics are making her a favorite for all ages. She has a genuine heart for others and gets to show this through her work as The Jason Foundation’s first National Teen Ambassador. James takes pride in the work that they do together. We are all excited to see what Bailey James will do next. Website: www.BaileyJamesCountry.com | Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, & Youtube: @BaileyJamesGang

“I dreamed myself into a corner and I couldn’t be happier!”
77th Annual Iroquois Steeplechase The 77th annual Iroquois Steeplechase in Music City took place on Saturday, May 12 and was full of the usual traditions but with some unexpected racing results and new festivities that made the already premier event an even bigger success. There was some Hollywood flair mixing with the Southern Belle’s this year as British actress Victoria Summer (Saving Mr. Banks, Game of Aces) hosted a tea and whiskey tasting in a special rail-side tent. It was presented by Teen Cancer America (TCA), the national non-profit founded by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend of The Who. The tickets benefitted TCA and its work in the Nashville area supporting local teenagers and young adults with cancer. The VIP experience included, catered food and bar, and a special musical performance by Summer and Nashville singer/songwriter John Gurney. They also had a raffle, which Country Pop artist, Tenille Arts won. “I was so excited for my first visit to Nashville,” said Summer. “Having the opportunity to perform for our guests and help raise funds and awareness for Teen Cancer America at the Iroquois Steeplechase was something I’ve looked forward to for months. It’s been a wonderful day at the races helping a special group of people who deserved our support.” This year’s Steeplechase was also the first year in awhile that there was no rain, which made for quite a hot day. So the horses weren’t the only ones taking advantage of the cooling stations. But, we are happy to report that thanks to the efforts of the Tennessee Equine Hospital there were no major injuries or overheating episodes. Although some of their vets did report they’d developed kankles after working in the heat all day - we hope their ankles had a speedy recovery.
Dolly Parton was reflecting on her career, as part of a panel discussion with songwriter/producer Linda Perry at the annual Music Biz 2018 conference. Parton discussed how her musical success has put her into a happy space, albeit one that requires an ongoing commitment to craft and business. “Every dream I have brings on a new dream, like a tree with deep roots and branches and a lot of leaves. And every time something happens it makes something else happen. I like being there, but it is a big responsibility.” Parton’s speech was just one of many highlights at the four day conference. For any attendee, Music Biz is a valuable investment involving networking, education, furthering your career or getting the all-important foot in the door. It gives new artists a platform to showcase their talent and established ones to accept awards, industry heavyweights the opportunity to mentor and offer advice, or a podium to get political and discuss the hot-button topics of the day, as manager Scooter Braun did while accepting the Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award for charitable efforts, and songwriters Shane McNally and Justin Tranter did at the “The Power of Queer Storytelling in Song” panel. The annual luncheon is always a highlight and this year was no exception. A prolonged standing ovation brought Nile Rodgers to tears. Accepting the Chairman’s Award for Sustained Creative Achievement, Rodgers said, “I love this business, with all the ups and downs I’ve had. I’m just trying to be the best partner you’ve ever had. It’s not ego. I’m just trying to do something groundbreaking so when we look back years from now we can say ‘wasn’t that good!’” Country star Kelsea Ballerini brought the house down at the Music Biz 2018 Awards Breakfast & Presentations, sponsored by the Country Music Association (CMA). She performed heartfelt versions of “Legends,” “I Hate Love Songs,” and “Love Me Like You Mean It” in honor of RIAA Chairman & CEO Cary Sherman, who received the Music Biz 2018 Presidential Award for Outstanding Executive Achievement. Sherman also presented Ballerini with an RIAA Certified Gold Song plaque for “Legends.” Hip-Hop artist YelaWolf got the Music & Money: Financial Literacy Summit powered by Lyric Financial Music off to a great start, sitting for an interview with Tim Gray, Host of The Golden Rules podcast. Another first-time event, the Summit featured an informative discussion on how those in the music business can achieve financial success, the legal and financial issues that artistowned companies must consider to make sure they maximize and keep the profits from their hard work, and how to forecast potential ROI before investing in launching a new artist or project. Topics included artists as business owners, new business models, a team approach to the new music economy, making money as a musician, and banking in Nashville.

Hangout 2018 promised sunny beaches, great vibes, and good music; and they delivered just that. While the kick-off for the weekend festivities started off a little rocky with inclement weather on Thursday and a new bag policy that had 100s of festival goers tossing $1000 worth of camel baks/water pouches into the trash in order to enter, by the end of the weekend the skies were clear, the music was rocking and friends were made. The one bummer was the cancellation of Skip Marley. Lots of festival-goers - including us - got to the festival early to see him but the reggae super jam that was done in his absence was still amazing. Some of the favorite sets from the weekend included, Roots of Creation, Slightly Stoopid, Mobley, Xperimento, and Grouplove. Out of the headlining acts that performed our two standout favorites were Foster the People, Halsey and ZEDD. ZEDD was by far the biggest crowd pleasing set of the weekend in our opinion - with songs from Michael Jackson, Queen and more, the crowd was singing every note. Foster the People took a moment to talk about love in the world and honored those that were lost in the Santa Fe shooting. It brought tears to many a eyes but was quickly uplifted by ‘Sit Next to Me.” And what is probably now all over Youtube is Kendrick’s closing set where he brought fans from the crowd up on stage to sing with him. Let’s just say the Rohan was the only one who nailed it... As far as food goes, the ever tasty Humpty Dumpty Food Truck was back delivering affordable dumplins along with Super Tot. Also, in case you didn’t know Sour Punch Candy has new flavors that are a must try! You can never go wrong with this kind of food after a day of hard festivaling. Some other notable options in the Gulf Shore area that are worth trying are Pink Pony Pub, Bahama Bob’s, Duck’s Diner and Kitty’s Kafe. Festival fashion that was on the rise still includes abundant amounts of body glitter but it seems that elaborate face jewels have become the latest statement. Another notable fashion accessory was light weight kimonos and the comeback of the fanny pack for guys.
Who doesn’t like reggae on the beach? Mix that with some sounds of rock and dubtronics - think of a present day Reggae Sublime infusion and you have Roots of Creation. While at Hangout Fest we had the opportunity to chat with guitarist and vocalist, Brett Wilson about the bands latest release, Grateful Dub. The album pays tribute to jam legends of the Grateful Dead that transcends generations. “We did a Halloween show where we covered all Grateful Dead songs in a reggae rock style and that was where the idea was born when we did that for our friends at Jerry Jam,” said Brett. They linked up with Errol Brown who engineered and produced Bob Marley’s last three albums in various capacities. “We thought that it was the perfect project to do with him because he can get all of those awesome tones and the mixing right.” said Wilson. “He let us take the songs that we’ve always loved and flip the script. From what I’ve heard so far, people have really enjoyed the way we did it in a live setting.” If the crowds at all three of their sets were any indication of the success of the music, the fact that it was made with Crowd funding has us sold. They have even been told by fans that their music has changed their lives. The band’s passion for their music is only matched by the passion for their families. While they have been touring coast to coast there has been numerous Facetime calls to home. For more information visit: www.rootsofcreation.com Mobley’s new project is full of songs that are precise in message and full of deep emotion. Specifically note that Fresh Lies, Vol I is not an album, it is a sharp and luminous anthology that explores his passionate relationship with his country as black man. The lead single, “Tell Me” appears at face value as a contemporary pop tune but when you dig deeper the underlying tune is a 21st century freedom song. “Right pacin’ left, the back roads are walkin’/If we just reach the crossin’, must reach the crossin’ before the county sees the light of day.” “In that particular song [‘Tell Me’], the speaker’s imploring the country to run away with him. And he’s asking her what he needs to be to make this happen,” said Mobley.
Some other fun activities this year included Smooch a Pooch, giant floaties to chill and listen to music on, the ferris wheel, and new this year He is versatile in his music and it is achingly exuberant. This was a roller skating rink playing hit project is just the beginning of a larger song cycle that he is after hit. The skating was definitely currently working on. The beauty of his work is that he has the our favorite addition this year. ability to live with it from the advent of the idea to the creation Overall, the festival was a success of the composition and then the laying down of the tracks to the and we are looking forward to what finish product. Not very many artists get to be writer, producer they have planned for 2019. and performer, but Mobley has accomplished this. Traditional Country … at its very finest! Available Now Available April 25, 2018 David Frizzell presents a digitally remastered special edition of Frizzell & Friends “This Is Our Time” featuring some of the most iconic names in Country Music PLUS A BRAND NEW BONUS TRACK:
“Lefty, Merle & Me” with Marty Haggard: honoring & inspired by beloved legends in preparation for the inaugural LeftyFest Music Festival ~ Corsicana, TX, June 16, 2018
www.davidfrizzell.com/leftyfest With “Frizzell & Friends,“ David and his friends have created a priceless album. — COUNTRY JUKEBOX Frizzell and Friends “This Is Our Time” is a superb album featuring brother Allen and fourteen friends. Twelve of these friends join together for the title cut with each artist throwing in one line of one of their hits to create a really exciting atmosphere. David Frizzell has a couple solos (“Dream Of Angels” and “No Regrets”) with former Statler Brother Jimmy Fortune also soloing on the beautiful “How Long’s Love Gonna Put Up With That” but mostly it is duets with such greats as Merle Haggard (“If You’ve Got The Money, I’ve Got The Time” – reminding us of the great Lefty), Bobby Bare (“Cowboy Hat”), Gene Watson (“Long Black Veil”- another reminder of Lefty), Joe Stampley (“Music”), Johnny Lee (“You Can’t Love Her”), T. Graham Brown (“Got to Get To Louisiana”), John Cowan (“Reckless Wind”), Allen Frizzell (“Three Minutes”) and Johnny Rodriguez (“Warm Spanish Wine”). But it is not all guys. The ladies are well represented with Crystal Gayle (“Wedding Dress For Sale”), Amy Clawson (“Why Wasn’t It Me”), Helen Cornelius (“Could It Be We Fell In Love Tonight”), Jeannie Seely (“Nobody’s Darling But Mine”) and Lacy J. Dalton (“Something ‘Bout You”). A remarkable line-up of talent that is well served by some of Nashville’s finest musicians and Merle Haggard’s band, The Strangers. — Pete Smith for The Advertiser A brilliant new CD featuring 14 country music super stars. … This is a top class great traditional CD and I thoroughly recommend it … terrific singing and music on all 20 tracks. — Graham Hassall The beauty besides the music lies in the fact that Frizzell doesn't give a damn about enlisting any current Nashville A-list or Billboardcharting talent. He's got plenty right here. … This is well done and one of the dark-horse candidates for indie album of the year in country. — Thom Jurek I've never been inclined to get overly excited about concept albums but as soon as I began listening to the first song on this two CD set I knew I was listening to something very special. David Frizzell's voice is still absolutely wonderful and he has chosen fifteen of the most talented singers in the business as his duet partners. He wrote nine of the songs and was co-writer of another one, all of which are really good, but my favorites are covers of several old standards including 'IF YOU'VE GOT THE MONEY, I'VE GOT THE TIME' with Merle Haggard and 'NOBODY'S DARLIN BUT MINE' with Jeannie Seely. The one song that absolutely blew me away was 'LONG BLACK VEIL' which was recorded with Gene Watson. I know this song has been recorded by many other artists in the past but this version ranks right up near the top with the very greatest! This 20 song two CD set will knock your hat in the creek! — DH

LeftyFest Music Festival to Honor Country Music Hall of Famer, Lefty Frizzell
LeftyFest Music Festival is established by David Frizzell, in cooperation with the city of Corsicana, to honor the enduring musical legacy of Lefty Frizzell, one of American music’s most iconic and influential singer/stylists. Lefty, who would’ve turned 90 this year, was a member of the Grand Ole Opry, and a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame honors his contributions to entertainment.
“I am so grateful to the city of Corsicana, Chief Johnson, and the good folks at The Moontower at the Oaks, and the Corsicana Visitors Bureau for their support,” David says. “This has been a goal of mine for many years, and I’m so excited to honor my brother with the gift of a free festival for country music fans in Texas and from around the world.”
Frizzell burst onto the music scene in 1951 with eight top 10 hits in that year alone. Frizzell once had four songs in the Billboard Top 10 at the same time, something that had never happened before: “I Want To Be With You Always,” “Always Late (With Your Kisses),” “Mom And Dad’s Waltz,” and “Travelin’ Blues.”
Blake Shelton, Randy Travis, Keith Whitley, Tim McGraw, and even George Jones, have tipped their hats to Lefty for his inspiration.

It’s rare for Kenny Chesney to have a career first, but now he does. When “Get Along,” the first single from Songs for the Saints, hit Billboard’s #10 slot and Mediabase’s #9 position, it joined “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” his duet with old friend and songwriter David Lee Murphy, which is sitting at #7 on Billboard and #6 on Mediabase. It marks the first time Chesney has had two songs in the Top 10 at the same time. “I never take anything for granted when it comes radio,” said Chesney. “They are the bridge between this music and the people who live inside these songs.
