When I interviewed for the Library Director position at Nashville Public Library, everyone told me my office would have a great view (if I got the job, of course). On my first day at NPL, I was happy for two reasons: one, I got the job, and two, the view was as good as promised. From my secondfloor office at the Main Library in downtown Nashville, I can look through a floor-to-ceiling window onto the Robinson Courtyard. A few scenes have become my favorites: Children run out of story time or a puppet production to play around (and sometimes in!) the courtyard fountain. Downtown workers snatch some sun and have lunch over a book. Students hang out with friends, ponder the Exploration and Discovery sculptures or surf our free Wi-Fi. People from all walks of life enjoying free, live music during our Courtyard Concerts, which run every Tuesday from August 12 until October 7 this year. Robinson Courtyard is a metaphor for our entire library system: A lot of people come and go every day. Each visitor is different, and each comes for different reasons. What is common among all our patrons is that they look to NPL for a specific type of space, philosophically and physically. This space must be welcoming. It must inspire people to learn and share ideas. Lastly, it must encourage them to connect with people outside their own everyday circles. With support from Mayor Dean and the Metro Council, we’re investing in our facilities, to make them more modern and inviting. Some locations are changing slightly, with new carpet and paint. Others, such as our North, Bordeaux and Edmondson Pike branch libraries, will undergo major renovations. Each NPL branch library each has its own feel and features the flower gardens at Donelson, the history wall at Goodlettsville, and the Carnegie architecture of North and East. The new Southeast and Bellevue locations will have interesting elements as well. This is fitting, since the library’s locations should be diverse and authentically reflect the best of their neighborhoods. Next time you have a few minutes, please drop in to one of our 21 spots across town. Please encourage your friends, relatives and coworkers to visit us, too. We want all Nashvillians to check us out (pun intended), finding that perfect next read, using a computer or spending some family time. No matter where you go within our library system, your experience will be just like mine when I take a few minutes to look out my office window: always worth the time.
