Do you take time to celebrate life’s wins and accomplishments? It’s important that we all do, and at Nashville Public Library we are making an effort to step back and smell the roses a little bit more this year. Why, because great things are happening and being done for our city by NPL staff! In January we celebrated branch renovations completed at Old Hickory and Edgehill with re-opening ceremonies. More renovations are on the way including Richland Park, North Branch, East, the third floor at Main and others. Later in the year we will have the grand openings of the new Southeast Branch and Bellevue Branch. This February library staff took a moment to celebrate a singular accomplishment by one of our librarians. Elizabeth (Liz) Atack won the 2014 Toyota Family Teacher of the Year award, funded by Toyota and awarded in partnership with the National Centers for Families Learning. Liz leads the NPL’s Bringing Books to Life (BBTL) program- promoting early literacy across Nashville. After the award ceremony in Washington D.C, Liz was swarmed by other librarians in attendance to celebrate with her. The reason for their excitement: a librarian was being recognized nationally as an educator! NPL takes its role to advance learning to heart. Whether it is BBTL, G.R.O.W., our T.O.T.A.L. (Totally Outstanding Teen Advocates for the Library) program, Wishing Chair Productions or adult literacy initiatives, we are raising the bar to make Nashville a more literate and educated community. Also in February T.O.T.A.L., headed by Monica McLaurine, was honored for efforts to reduce both school and community bullying. The recognition took place during the National Conference on Bullying held at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. The conference was hosted by the School Safety Advocacy Council. This teen driven program, funded by the Nashville Public Library Foundation, as is BBTL, has developed a nationally recognized community program dealing with the growing issue of bullying! Speaking of learning and education, NPL will unveil “The Studio” concept this year. The Studio is an approach to individualized learning for teens and adults. Specific spaces are being designed and equipped at our new locations as well as renovated spaces throughout the branch system. Watch for news and information later in 2014 as these mentor-driven, high-tech learning spaces come online. Summer reading will have some new twists to it this year, too. Keep an eye on us; we have some great new programs up our sleeve in 2014!

ALL AGES It Came from the Library – Green Hills Staff Art March We look all over Davidson County and the surrounding area for artists to fill our galleries, but we didn’t have to look far for these artists. They all work right here at the Green Hills Branch Library. This month we’re proud to display the art of Joanna Roberts, Hannah Cho and William Kirkpatrick. Their works include oils, watercolors, acrylics, pencils, paper-cuttings, sculptures and ceramics. Art by the Hillsboro Art Club April Earlier this year, a few students at Hillsboro High School decided to create an art group that was open to all students interested in art and the Hillsboro Art Club was born. We meet twice a month to create and volunteer. Our group is eclectic and inspired, ready to use art as a medium to share joy and to help others. We hope you enjoy our exhibit in April at the Green Hills Library! I Know My Family Loves Me Because… Posters for Child Abuse Prevention Month April April is designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month … a time to remind and encourage us in ways to promote the health and well-being of children. Catholic Charities hosts an annual poster contest for Nashville students in grades K – 8. It’s a chance for students to show their perspective, creativity and artistic talents by creating posters using this year’s theme: “I Know My Family Loves Me Because…” Selected posters are displayed in the community to celebrate and remind us that families have many ways to love, support and show they care for each other. Mixed Media Artwork from University School of Nashville April University School of Nashville (USN) is a K-12 Private school, located in Nashville at 2000 Edgehill,

Fused Glass – the Art of Jan Bell & Adrienne Parker May Jan Bell, of JaJa Glass: “I work with glass from the inside out, often making my own molds. Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, my unconscious spontaneity is the undisputed boss allowing for improvisation and accident to influence the finished product.” Adrienne Parker, of Ampglasswerks: “I view design in both paper and glass as creative avenues for useful purposes. While I hope my dishes, plates and bowls are pleasing to see, I want even more to add beauty and color to everyday living.” Travel Art of the Jerry Art Collection May Painting is a very enjoyable pastime for me, now that I have retired from my dental practice and have leisure time. Even as a boy in New York City, before coming to Nashville in 1939, I loved to draw and paint scenes I saw on greeting cards. Vibrant color is very important in my renditions, and though I have painted in watercolor, oil and mixed media, I prefer the ease and beauty of the acrylic paints. My Jerry Art Collection of over sixty paintings grows with each inspiration that moves me, and I appreciate the privilege of showing it here at the Green Hills Library. WHEATIES AND MORE - The Cereal Box Collection of Steve Meyer May For decades General Mills has been using professional athletes to market its Wheaties cereal. When Steve Meyer’s sons were eating their Wheaties in the 1980’s, he saved the boxes which featured basketball star Michael Jordan. As the boys grew and the athletes changed, Steve kept saving the boxes. On out of town trips he would visit grocery stores to find boxes that were only distributed in that local market. Today, Steve’s collection numbers more than 200, including stars of baseball, football, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, and racing, as well as Olympic gold medal winners. Share Your Experience

Celebrating 10 Years of Listening to America Celebrate our diversity and share your experience as a part of “Nashville’s New Faces,” a StoryCorps @ your library program. We want to hear from you. We’re looking for members of Latino, Somali, Laotian, Kurdish, Vietnamese, Sudanese, foreign-born and immigrant communities. Contact: andrea.blackman@nashville.gov or visit: http://nashvillepubliclibrary.org/ storycorpsatyourlibrary for details

StoryCorps@ your library is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the American Library Association Public Programs Office.

In the midst of the late winter planting season and as spring approaches in Nashville, Nashville Public Library is pleased to announce a new pilot program called the Nashville Public Library Seed Exchange, the botanical arm of our collection.

Here’s how it works

• Just as our patrons check out books, movies and CDs, they can now check out seeds to grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers in their own home, school, church and community gardens. • Seed check out season begins at the end of February at Bellevue, Bordeaux, Edmondson Pike and Inglewood branches • As they enjoy the fruits of these seeds, patrons are encouraged to give back to the seed Exchange from their own harvests by bringing seeds from their strongest, most vital plants to one of our four participating Library locations to share in the future.

12

Part of the Seed Exchange’s mission is to support the community as we grow, harvest and save seeds. That’s why we’re working with local farmers, gardeners and community agencies to offer free workshops throughout the year. Anyone with a Nashville Public Library card can check out seeds and participate in these workshops. The Nashville Public Library Seed Exchange program is always looking for open-pollinated, heirloom seeds from anyone in the community who is willing to share, a little or a lot. We’re available to answer questions at seedlibrary@nashville.org.
