One of the highlights of 2104 for me was the opportunity to participate in the Leadership Nashville program. This civic academy for community leaders helped me gain a deeper understanding of Nashville and Davidson County, past and present. It also provided a glimpse of how organizations across Nashville can work together to serve Davidson County’s residents. Of course, I also got to brag about how Nashville Public Library (NPL) supports and serves our neighbors and neighborhoods. First, NPL’s people are the cornerstone of our commitment to Nashville. Every day, our librarians and staff work hard to help others learn and thrive. Our staff is dedicated, and they care about making a positive contribution. Second, recent investments, carefully chosen and made over the past year, are another part of our dedication to this city. We’ve placed our resources into growing and modernizing, with new and renovated facilities, advanced technologies and learning programs. The benefits of the investments we’ve made extend beyond our library halls. They are taken into the larger community each time our patrons carry what they’ve learned, received and discovered at NPL back home, to family and to friends. In January, NPL will again demonstrate our passion for community during our popular “Food for Fines” campaign. At the start of every year– when local food banks have gone through the holiday rush, and their supplies are low – we waive overdue fees for every patron who donates a canned or packaged food item. Library users earn $1 in “fine amnesty” for each donated item. At the end of the 2014 campaign, we donated just more than 40,000 tons of food to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. This helped provide 34,000 winter meals to local families. As winter brings temperatures down, please join us. Bring an item (or ten) for Food for Fines. Come in from the cold and into one of our 21 locations, or cozy up at home with an item from our digital collection. However you choose to experience NPL, please engage with us - soon and often.

From The Four Corners by Paul Vexler Metro Arts Commission dedicates new public art

Corners is located in the lobby of the Southeast Library and Community Center at the Commons at the Crossings campus. The large sculpture was hand crafted by artist Paul Vexler in his home studio in Snohomish, WA. The design for the public artwork was heavily influenced by the communities surrounding the library and community center. Vexler describes From the Four Corners as “a sculptural metaphor celebrating a rich diverse community. Suspended from the ceiling in the central lobby area, four different wood species and brightly colored plastic laminate are shaped into curling, spiraling strips and intertwined into a loose knot in the center of the sculpture. Each of the four wood pieces stretches from the center knot into to a different corner of the lobby space.
