African-American History Month
From the Director
6 7 8 9-31
Celebrate African-American History Month with us, and make a visit to our renowned Civil Rights Room any day of the year Thanks for picking up a copy of our Winter 2015 - 16 Unbound.
32
As you read on, I hope you see how Nashville Public Library – your public library – can help you get through the winter.
33
For example, we all know that the best way to spend a cold, dreary day is to curl up and dig into an awesome read. Well, Nashville Public Library can definitely help with that! We have nearly two million books and other “stuff,” and everything is free with your library card (which is also free!).
16-17 and 29
You don’t even have to leave the house this winter to enjoy these items. From the comfort of your living room (and your pajamas), just log on to our website, www. library.nashville.org. Enter your library card number and start downloading and streaming e-books, audio books, music and movies. Our new online catalog gives the full “shopping experience,” as you can rate the items you check out and get tailored recommendations for other titles and authors you might like. Also, look for some new online products on our website: Lynda.com, ArtistWorks, BrainHQ, and OneClickDigital. Again, everything is free with your library card! Of course, when cabin fever sets in, you can escape to our 21 locations across town. Spend some family time in our new children’s area at the Main Library, where kids can build their science, technology and math skills as they move, play and read. We’ve even included a special spot that’s just for “tweens.”

Unbound is a Nashville Public Library quarterly publication. Visit www.library.nashville.org to view an online copy.
Meanwhile, young and young at heart alike have access to free health workshops and tools in our new “Be Well at NPL” initiative. Finally, don’t forget our January Food for Fines campaign. You bring in a can or package of nonperishable food. We take $1.00 off your library fees and fines with each item you donate. Nashville Public Library gives it all to Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee, and local families get support during some of the year’s toughest months. Food For Fines is an annual patron and staff favorite, and I can’t wait to see how many tons of food we collect this time around. Read on, and check out what we have to offer. Then, visit us, soon and often, in person and online. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Stay warm!
Winter Featured Programs Enjoy free family programs – everything from Polar Express Day to a gingerbread house decorating party – to help you get into the holiday spirit.
Look for the snowflake image in the events calendar to find a holiday program near you.
Did you know that one in four Tennessee children experiences food insecurity? Meanwhile, hunger is a reality for one in six Tennesseans of all ages.
Look for this image in the events calendar to find a hunger awareness or nutrition program that whets your appetite.
You can help. Wipe out your library fees and fines during NPL’s Food for Fines campaign.
To celebrate National African-American History Month, the library’s Puppet Truck will bring free performances of Ellingtown to eight locations. The library will also host free African and African-American storytelling shows, art workshops and hands-on history and culture classes across town.
Earn $1.00 in “fine forgiveness” for every canned or nonperishable food item you bring to any of our 21 locations. We’ll send everything you donate to Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee to help feed local families this winter. For more information, visit our website or call 615.862.5800.
Look for the African continent image in the events calendar to make your plans for African-American History Month.

Join the great master of jazz, Duke Ellington, as he takes us on a musical journey with puppets of all sorts. The Nashville Jazz Workshop produced this special presentation in cooperation with NPL’s Wishing Chair Productions. Ellingtown plays in February at NPL’s Donelson, East, Edgehill, Goodlettsville, Hadley Park, Hermitage, Old Hickory and Southeast locations (check events calendar for dates and times).
For Kids
While they sing along at story time … make a craft during Big Kids Club … or hone their skills during a Lego® workshop, our children learn through play, movement and discovery every time they join a library program designed just for them. Check the events calendar for free children’s events at all our locations. The library’s troupe of professional performers will perform three shows this winter. All shows are free and happen in the Children’s Theatre at the Main Library, 615 Church Street. There’s nothing like a visit to the library for the children, grandchildren and other little ones in your life. And, to bring your child’s favorite fairy tales and other stories to life, nothing comes as close to being magical as a Wishing Chair puppet production.
A Child’s Calendar Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19 10:30 and 11:30 am John Updike’s collection of poems for children is transformed into a delightful musical puppet show that takes us through the seasons, month by month. Sarah Hart and Brian Hull score this special adaptation with original music.

Studio NPL is a space designed especially for young people at NPL. At our six Studios across town, middle and high school students work with expert mentors to write poetry, stage performances, make films and record music, manufacture their own designs and create art. As Nashville’s young people hang out and “geek out” at Studio NPL, they build their science, technology, engineering, art and math skills. They jump into interactive education projects that set them up for success at school, at work and in life.
