From the Director
At Nashville Public Library (NPL), we spend a lot of time exploring. We explore millions of ideas, music, philosophies, authors, languages, and more. If you have your free Library card, you do, too.
This spring, we’re using Nashville’s Civil Rights Room and Collection as the “North Star” of our explorations. In the heart of downtown at our Main Library, this room houses oral histories, photographs, letters, and other items from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. We’re especially focusing on John Lewis, a Civil Rights hero, U.S. Congressman, and best-selling author.

And we’re not alone. By the time you read this message, Lewis will have discussed and signed copies of MARCH, the graphic novel trilogy he has co-authored. This visit, free and open to everyone, is part of Lewis’ role as our latest Literary Award Honoree. After hearing Lewis talk about his book, it’s time for us all to read it, together. MARCH is the selected work for this year’s Nashville Reads, our annual citywide reading initiative. Get a copy of MARCH. Read it. You’ll be glad you did. Then, join free book discussions, workshops, and other interactive events happening this spring at our 21 Library locations and across our community. Make a list of the questions that come up for you as you read MARCH. Ask the other readers you meet at Nashville Reads programs to answer them. Ask yourself to answer them, too. Visit our Civil Rights Room this spring, for the first time or the hundredth. Again, you’ll be glad did.

New Cookbooks to Order Up! Our bookshelves are full of delicious titles this time of year. Here are a few tasty favorites. Victuals: An Appalachian Journey, with Recipes
Ronnie Lundy This may be one of my new favorite cookbooks of all time. When I first looked through it, I swear I would have killed for a pot of green beans and white potatoes. No one-- and I mean no one--writes Southern food and rituals better than Lundy. Traveling over the holidays? Check out the author’s recommended stops for chili dogs (and make sure to order slaw on yours).
Forest Feast Gatherings: Simple Vegetarian Menus for Hosting Friends & Family
Deep Run Roots
Vivian Howard of “A Chef’s Life” Vivian Howard is the cook we all dream of being— grounded yet creative. Howard blends the best of high falutin’ cuisine and the traditions of eastern North Carolina. Next time you have friends over, wow them with her “Party Magnet” blue cheese, butter and goat cheese ball, and wash it down with her peanut, Pepsi and bourbon float.
Erin Gleeson Gleeson re-wrote the world of cookbooks with her first book, Forest Feast. In this volume, she shares holiday entertaining treats. Her trademark visual style makes cooking a joy.
Well Fed Weeknights: Complete Paleo Meals in 45 Minutes or Less Melissa Joulwan The Well Fed cookbook series continues with this quick and easy installment.
Big Bad Breakfast
Jonn Currence Start your day with this James Beard Award-winning author. “Big Bad Breakfast” is also the name of one of Currence’s six Oxford, Mississippi, restaurants. Rounding out the list of cookbooks we can’t wait to sink our teeth into:Big American Cookbook by Mario Batali Appetites Cookbook by Anthony Bourdain
