From the Director When students stop reading during summer vacation, they lose academic skills they earned during the school year. We call this learning loss “summer slide,” and we are serious about preventing it. That’s why NPL hosts fun, free programs as part of the NPL Summer Challenge. I hope Nashvillians of all ages will compete in this year’s Summer Challenge, earning points for prizes as you also “stay sharp” this summer. With prizes that include an iPad mini™, a PlayStation®4, and more, Summer Challenge is an opportunity to be doubly rewarded for expanding your mind, one page and one discovery at a time.

The Library’s Facilities Master Plan is our strategy for constructing, renovating and maintaining world-class library facilities across Davidson County through the year 2040. Our goal is to ensure that 90 percent of Davidson County residents are within three miles (or a fifteen-minute commute) of a library location.

I’m inspired to see so many people getting out to better themselves and their communities. We see this every day at the Library, where learners, thinkers, and leaders come through our doors and visit us online as they make their contributions to the world. Here’s to a great summer in a great city. Happy reading,

5 Ways

to Get Your Child

Reading Ready

this Summer at NPL!

Liz Atack, Bringing Books to Life Program Coordinator

Our friends at the American Library Association came up with five fun and simple things families can do at home or at NPL to help children get ready to read. What are you waiting for? Visit www.library.nashville.org or any NPL location, and . . . .

Read! Read to your children, take them to story time at NPL, and let them pick out books to take home. You can

also let your children read to you — if they’re not yet “readers,” let them tell you a story based on the book’s illustrations.

Talk! Talk about your day, the last book you read, or about your hopes

and dreams. Attend an Animal Architects program at the library, and talk as a family about what you learned. Did anything surprise you?

Sing! Singing is a natural way to learn about sounds and syllables. And, contrary to popular belief, everyone can sing! Stream music and have family karaoke night in your living room. Or, come to one of our Puppet Truck’s performances of The World of Mother Goose, and sing along.

Play! Did you know that playing and reading go hand in hand? Playing

gives us opportunities to use new words and make up fantastic stories. Why not play with some of the puppets in the Main Library’s Children’s department, or attend a LEGO® program at your local branch? These are great ways to play together.

Write! Send postcards or e-mails to friends and family near and far, and tell them about all of the fun things you’re doing this summer. Is your child not yet a writer? Have them draw a picture of their adventures!

New! New! New! NPL Readers

Whether your beginning reader is just starting out, building skills, reading more, or ready to explore, we have the books for you, and we want to help you find them.

Use our new color codes to help find the right book for the reader in your life.

starting out: few words, simple concepts, mostly pictures building skills: simple vocabulary, 1-2 sentences per page reading more: more complex plots, fewer pictures, 3-7 sentences per page ready to explore: richer vocabulary, fewer or no pictures, 8 or more sentences per page
