our leadership
From the President & CEO
The opening of Schermerhorn Symphony Center in 2006 represented a major milestone for the Nashville Symphony. Who could have known that, not even five years later, our building would be dramatically affected by one of the worst floods in the history of Nashville? That flood caused $40 million in damage and forced us to close the concert hall for a total of eight months while the building underwent extensive repairs. Though we would never choose to go through an experience like that, we can now say that we have learned a tremendous amount in the process. First and foremost, the flood underscored our deep and abiding commitment to serving the Middle Tennessee community with great music and meaningful, life-changing education programs, and it demonstrated much about the strength and resilience of the institution. Even with the Schermerhorn temporarily out of commission, we managed to reschedule every concert planned for the first half of our 2010/11 season to an alternate venue, thanks to assistance from several community partners, including Lipscomb University, Tennessee Performing Arts Center and Ryman Auditorium. In spite of the tremendous disruption, we were able to continue a planned expansion of our One Note, One Neighborhood education initiative. Since 2007, this forward-thinking program has provided music education resources to students in targeted clusters of the Metro Nashville Public Schools system. This year,
students and teachers in both the Pearl-Cohn and Stratford clusters are benefiting from the many opportunities offered by One Note, One Neighborhood, including hands-on music instruction from Symphony musicians at the W.O. Smith School and transportation to and from lessons — all of which is provided at no charge. We wouldn’t have made it through the flood without the steadfast support of our donors and subscribers, the commitment of our gifted musicians, the visionary artistic leadership of Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero or the leadership of our board members. We feel enormously thankful that we are part of such a dynamic community, and we are proud to say that we represented Nashville well at the 2011 GRAMMY® Awards, when our recording of Michael Daugherty’s Metropolis Symphony won three awards. And we have much to look forward to. In May 2012, the Nashville Symphony will travel to Carnegie Hall to perform as part of the Spring for Music festival, an annual celebration of orchestras committed to adventuresome programming. This opportunity will allow us to showcase, on a national stage, our dedication to commissioning and performing the work of today’s leading American composers. This is just one of many exciting projects we have in store, and we look forward to sharing them all with the people of Middle Tennessee. — Alan D. Valentine, President & CEO

As we assess the challenges the Nashville Symphony has faced, we can also celebrate the orchestra’s many triumphs. From the Board Chair
The past few years have presented our entire community with many challenges, including the economic downturn and the disastrous flood of May 2010. The Nashville Symphony has felt these challenges keenly, but we have emerged much stronger in the process. We are proud of our musicians and our administrative staff, who responded thoughtfully and proactively to each of the challenges they have faced. The Board of Directors has confidence in the Symphony’s success, and the entire organization is working together to see that the institution remains vibrant and robust. At the outset of the economic downturn, the Nashville Symphony closely examined its finances to find the most effective ways of managing expenses while keeping the orchestra focused on its mission of serving the community. Weathering this turbulent period underscored how vitally important it is that we secure the long-term sustainability of the Nashville Symphony. This requires more than simply balancing the budget each year. We must also establish a course for growth that balances our greatest ambitions with responsible, far-sighted fiscal management. During the 2010/11 season, we took several significant steps toward achieving this goal. Most significantly, we have begun the quiet phase of an endowment campaign. We also embarked on the process of adding more concert presentations to the Schermerhorn schedule, with the goal of diversifying our audiences
and increasing our ticket revenues. In addition, we established the Nashville Symphony Council, a group of more than 400 leaders from across the mid-state area. These ambassadors for our organization are playing a vital role in encouraging the citizens of Middle Tennessee to be part of our success. Though the flood caused extensive damage to Schermerhorn Symphony Center, it also provided an opportunity to plan for the orchestra’s future. During the very complex (but completely successful) process of rebuilding the concert hall, the administrative staff took every measure possible to keep a disaster of this scale from happening again at the Schermerhorn. The building’s redesigned sump pump system, for instance, now has 10 times its previous pumping capacity. And thanks to a newly installed monitoring system, staff members will be able to anticipate the possibility of flooding before a drop of water ever trickles into the building so that they can take protective actions quickly. As we assess the challenges the Nashville Symphony has faced, we can also celebrate the orchestra’s many triumphs. We now look ahead with great enthusiasm to a list of thrilling concerts, more recordings and high-profile projects for our orchestra, knowing that prudent and sound management today will bring success to the Nashville Symphony in the years to come. — James C. Gooch, Board Chair

Season Highlights
After the Flood: Rebuilding the Schermerhorn Like many other homes, businesses and institutions in Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Symphony was dramatically affected by the flood of May 2010. The basement of Schermerhorn Symphony Center, home to the orchestra’s concert hall and administrative offices, filled with 24 feet of water. The recovery effort began as soon as the floodwaters receded, and it lasted well into the 2010/11 concert season. American Constructors, Inc., the contractor responsible for building the Schermerhorn, led an expert team of construction professionals who faced the daunting task of restoring the entire basement.

The building was closed for a total of eight months. During that time, despite numerous obstacles created by the flood, the entire Nashville Symphony organization worked tirelessly to ensure that the orchestra could continue to fulfill its mission of providing a full schedule of concerts and music education programs for the citizens of Middle Tennessee. While repairs took place on the Schermerhorn, staff members worked in rented office spaces downtown, and the musicians of the Nashville Symphony stayed busy performing at TPAC, War Memorial Auditorium, Ryman Auditorium and Lipscomb University. The Symphony’s Education & Community Engagement Department continued with a planned expansion of its cornerstone education initiative, One Note, One Neighborhood, which provides hands-on music instruction to underserved students in Metro Nashville Public Schools.
Because of the extensive nature of repairs — which required crews to work around the clock much of the time — the rebuilding process also provided a unique opportunity: to ensure that a disaster of this scale never again happens at the Schermerhorn. Staff consulted with hydrologists, civil engineers and structural engineers to make a number of improvements to the building. These included redesigning the sump pump system, which now has 10 times its previous pumping capacity. In addition, the Symphony redesigned its flood emergency plan, which will enable staff members to anticipate the possibility of flooding before a drop of water trickles into the building. Total cost for repairs was $40 million, of which $10 million was covered by flood insurance, $26 million was covered by assistance from FEMA, and $2 million came from the state of Tennessee.

2010/11 Season
The Nashville Symphony began its season without a home following the May 2010 flood. Thanks to the wonderful cooperation of several community partners, all of the Symphony’s fall concerts were relocated to alternate venues, including Tennessee Performing Arts Center, War Memorial Auditorium, Lipscomb University and Ryman Auditorium. Guest artists traveling along with the orchestra to these venues included renowned pianist André Watts, vocalist Michael McDonald and cellist Steven Isserlis. Ben Folds, a friend and fan of the Nashville Symphony, performed a benefit concert for the orchestra at TPAC on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. On December 31, 2010, the Nashville Symphony celebrated the re-opening of Schermerhorn Symphony Center with a sold-out concert featuring violinist Itzhak Perlman. Just a week later, on January 6, the building’s re-opening earned national attention when National Public Radio aired the orchestra’s first subscription concert back in the hall, led by guest conductor Nicholas McGegan and featuring pianist Robert Levin. This spectacular week of highlights paved the way for a vibrant spring, as excited, enthusiastic audiences enjoyed the remainder of the Symphony’s season in its newly restored home. Notable performances included Peter Cetera; Holst’s The Planets; the return of former Music Advisor Leonard Slatkin, who conducted a new violin concerto by Philip Glass, American Four Seasons; and a masterful performance by guest pianist Olga Kern.
The season closed on a high note with the announcement of Jun Iwasaki as the Nashville Symphony’s new concertmaster. This charismatic young violinist was present for the final concert of the 2010/11 SunTrust Classical Series: a performance of Mahler’s transcendent Resurrection Symphony featuring the orchestra, chorus, soprano Janice Chandler-Eteme and legendary mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. Considering everything that had happened over the past year, it was a fitting way to bid farewell to one of the most eventful seasons in the history of the Nashville Symphony!

Maestro Giancarlo Guerero Conducting at the Schermerhorn
The Nashville Symphony’s Music Director enjoyed an eventful, music-filled year packed with engagements in Nashville and beyond. In addition to leading a full schedule of concerts with the Nashville Symphony — including such highlights as Holst’s The Planets in February and a momentous performance of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony in June — he made several high-profile appearances as a guest conductor this season. Of particular note, in March Guerrero was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency. In this three-year post, he’ll guide artistic planning for the Residency, program and conduct subscription concerts and special events, participate in collaborations with Miami partners and institutions, and guide the work of the Residency’s Education and Engagement programs. Prior to this appointment, Guerrero had already enjoyed a five-year conducting relationship with The Cleveland Orchestra, having led the ensemble in Cleveland and at their summer home, Blossom Music Center. Local audiences will have an opportunity to hear him conduct the Orchestra when they perform at the Schermerhorn on March 19, 2012.
Earlier in the season, Guerrero’s guest-conducting engagements took him literally around the world. He performed in Asia for the first time, spending a two-week residency in January with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur. Following that, he traveled back to the U.S. for a performance with the Kansas City Symphony and guest cellist Alisa Weilerstein. In addition to his conducting duties with the Nashville Symphony, Guerrero also devotes significant time to supporting the institution’s Education & Community Engagement programs. During the 2010/11 season, he delivered an address to students at Belmont University, and he spent time talking with students at Pearl-Cohn High School, one of the public schools served by the Symphony’s One Note, One Neighborhood program.

Since 1963, the Nashville Symphony Chorus has been an integral part of the Nashville Symphony’s concert schedule. This season, the Chorus kicked off the Nashville Symphony’s calendar with performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at War Memorial Auditorium on September 10 and 11, 2010. That was the first of several notable highlights: December 16-18, 2010: The Symphony continued its annual tradition of presenting Handel’s Messiah during the holiday season. With Schermerhorn Symphony Center in the final stages of repairs, the concert was held at War Memorial Auditorium featuring the Nashville Symphony To learn more about Chamber Chorus, the Nashville a select group of Symphony Chorus vocalists drawn from click here the full chorus. February 17-19, 2011: The Nashville Symphony Women’s Chorus joined the orchestra for Holst’s The Planets. Performing offstage, out of view of the audience, they lent their voices to an especially spellbinding reading of the final movement, “Neptune, the Mystic.”
Since 1963, the Nashville Symphony Chorus has been an integral part of the Nashville Symphony’s concert schedule.
March 6, 2011: The Chorus took the spotlight at its Voices of Spring concert, performing a diverse selection of works that included Chorus Director George Mabry’s own settings of O Magnum Mysterium and three poems by Emily Dickson. This was a particularly exciting event, since the previous year’s concert was canceled due to the flood. As a lead-up to the concert, the Nashville Symphony Chamber Chorus paid a visit to WPLN-FM’s Live in Studio C program on February 23, offering radio listeners a preview of the concert. April 29-May 1, 2011: The Symphony and Chorus provided the music for Nashville Ballet’s staging of Carmina Burana at TPAC’s Jackson Hall. Local audiences will have the opportunity to hear this piece performed at the Schermerhorn next season, as the closing offering of the 2011/12 SunTrust Classical Series. June 2-4, 2011: Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony served as a fitting close to the orchestra’s regular season at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Response to the concert was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, as audience members leapt to their feet for a standing ovation. The Nashville Symphony Chorus is composed predominantly of volunteer members, as well as a group of 16 paid singers. All singers are selected by audition, are characterized by their love for singing and committed to excellence in the presentation of the finest choral music. The ensemble will celebrate its 50th anniversary season in 2013/14.

Food, Beverage & Events

When flood waters filled the basement of Schermerhorn Symphony Center, they destroyed the building’s commercial kitchen, which provides all dining and catering for concert hall patrons and special event clients. The Schermerhorn’s Food, Beverage & Events (FB&E) team spent the first half of 2010/11 rebuilding its entire operation, stepping out on New Year’s Eve 2010 with a brand-new facility. Special features include: A state-of-the-art Electrolux air-o-steam Touchline oven. Notable for its high performance and low emissions, it’s considered one of the “greenest” commercial kitchen appliances on the market. Electrolux Blast Chiller, which can reduce food temperature from 90°C to 3°C in less than 90 minutes — maintaining both flavor and nutritional value. Alto-Shaam indoor smoker, which has added a whole new range of items to the Schermerhorn menu. Custom Symphony-patterned china from Steelite, La Tavola Italian silver flatware, and metal-framed MTS Chiavari chairs.
Despite the setbacks caused by the flood, the Schermerhorn’s FB&E team came back stronger than ever in January 2011. During the second half of the 2010/11 season, the building hosted more than 70 private functions that, combined, drew more than 13,000 guests to One Symphony Place. Repeat customers included the Eve of Janus Ball, CMA All-Star Concert, Midsouth Regional Emmy Awards, American Heart Association’s Heart Gala, and Seton Celebration and Soiree for Saint Thomas Health Services. New clients included the Ballet Ball, A Tribute to the Songs of Bill & Gloria Gaither and the KIPP Academy Annual Breakfast. With the re-opening of the Schermerhorn, the FB&E team also relaunched its popular dining options in the concert hall, serving a total of more than 30,000 patrons from January through July of 2011. The fine-dining restaurant Arpeggio had its busiest season yet, while the Symphony Café revamped its menu, added breakfast and extended its hours to open earlier. One especially popular new addition to the Café has been the high-speed panini grill, which heats sandwiches six times faster than a standard sandwich grill.

In the 2010/11 season, we reached more than 200,000 Middle Tennesseans through our education and community engagement programs. Music education is at the very heart of the Nashville Symphony’s mission, and with each year since the opening of Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the Symphony has intensified its efforts to create meaningful learning opportunities for people of all ages. In the 2010/11 season, we reached more than 200,000 Middle Tennesseans through our education and community engagement programs — an increase of 18,000 over last year! Our flagship initiative, One Note, One Neighborhood (ONON), provides an array of music education resources to students and teachers at underserved school clusters in Metro Nashville Public Schools. These resources include participation in Nashville Symphony programs such as our Young People’s Concerts and curriculum materials for music specialists and classroom teachers. To make sure that all interested students have the opportunity to pursue a music education, the Nashville Symphony collaborates with the W.O. Smith/Nashville Community Music School to provide afterschool music instruction for students of all ages. We provide the teachers, instruments and transportation without cost to all participants, while W.O. Smith offers its expertise to administer the program. Following our successful first two years in MNPS’s Stratford cluster, ONON expanded to the Pearl-Cohn cluster in 2010/11, reaching twice as many students as before — despite the challenges of the May 2010 flood. To ensure that ONON is providing the best possible educational opportunities for the children we serve, we have engaged an independent evaluator, Dr. Robert Horowitz, associate director of The Center for Arts Education Research at Columbia University’s Teachers College. In his third-year report, Horowitz called the Symphony’s partnership with the W.O. Smith School “highly effective,” pointing out that “The program proved to be resilient in response to winter snow storms and the May 2010 flood…. This resilience, and the overall quality of the program, was evidence of the commitment and the effectiveness of each organization’s leadership and staff.”

Nashville Symphony Council Their charge is to spread the word about the key role our world-class orchestra plays in ensuring the cultural, educational and economic health of the entire Middle Tennessee community
n the web
Nashville Symphony’s origins are firmly rooted in the city of Nashville, but today the orchestra’s impact is felt all across Middle Tennessee. To help increase awareness and build relationships throughout the region, the Nashville Symphony formed the Nashville Symphony Council (NSC), an organization of more than 450 leaders from Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson and Sumner counties who serve as ambassadors for the organization. Their charge is to spread the word about the key role our world-class orchestra plays in ensuring the cultural, educational and economic health of the entire Middle Tennessee community. Membership in the Learn more about the NSC is by invitation only Nashville Symphony and includes leaders in Council, at the group’s business, real estate, facebook page medicine, law, religion, education, government, civic life, nonprofit services and the arts. The group is currently co-chaired by Kevin Lavender, Senior Vice President of Fifth Third Bank, and Howard Stringer, a respected community leader and volunteer and the retired chairman of Colonial Corp of America. In addition, each of the five participating counties is represented by a pair of co-chairs. For the 2010/11 season, the NSC hosted fall and spring meetings in all five Middle Tennessee counties the organization currently encompasses. Led by county cochairs, these meetings shared the latest news about the Nashville Symphony, from the rebuilding of Schermerhorn Symphony Center to the organization’s music education programs. On October 28, 2010, all members of the NSC were invited to a region-wide meeting at the Nashville City Club, at which Thomas Morris, artistic director of the Spring for Music festival, discussed the Nashville Symphony’s upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall as part of the festival. Nashville-based electric violinist Tracy Silverman, who will be the featured soloist at the concert, was also on hand to discuss and demonstrate his instrument. Throughout the year, NSC members were invited to special events and kept apprised of Symphony news via a special newsletter and through Facebook.
Rutherford and Wilson County NSC members Aurelia Holden, Vicki Smith and Devin McClendon tour the Schermerhorn just prior to the building’s reopening.

Symphony Spring Fashion Show
Schermerhorn Symphony Center was at its most stylish and elegant on April 26, 2011, as the Nashville Symphony Orchestra League hosted the 2011 Symphony Spring Fashion Show. Featuring the stunning designs of Marchesa, the show attracted a soldout crowd of more than 800 people. World-renowned for their elegant, vintage-inspired eveningwear, Marchesa co-founders Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig showcased their latest creations, which included lots of ruffles, lace and sheer fabrics in a bold palette of black, white and red. Superstar vocalist Faith Hill concluded the evening with a knockout performance of her beloved hits, including “This Kiss.” Backed by her band, the singer sounded as fabulous as she looked, dazzling the audience in her customdesigned Marchesa gown. n the web

2010 symphony ball The ball annually raises funds for the Symphony and its commitment to artistic excellence & music education. Nearly 400 guests joined co-chairs Lin Andrews and Janet Ayers for the Symphony Ball at Loews Vanderbilt Hotel on December 11, 2010. The evening served as a festive warm-up for the Grand Re-Opening of Schermerhorn Symphony Center just a few weeks later. As guests entered the lobby, they were greeted by a detailed replica of the Schermerhorn’s classically inspired façade, with a quartet of musicians performing on a stage set up just inside the columns. The interior of the Loews ballroom could have been mistaken for a room in Versailles. Walls were draped with gold chiffon, and floral arrangements of white hydrangeas, white roses, white phalaenopsis orchids, Star of David and narcissus were set upon glistening tables covered with gold leaf and white velvet damask. The cream and gold harlequin dance floor was a hand-painted work of art. After guests dined on a three-course meal prepared by Loews Executive Chef Elaine Taubin, music industry veteran and longtime Symphony supporter Billy Ray Hearn presented Marty Stuart with the Harmony Award in honor of the multitalented singer’s enduring commitment to Nashville’s musical legacy. Symphony President & CEO Alan Valentine presented the special Gold Baton Award to Mayor Karl Dean for his instrumental work creating the Music Business Council and for playing a vital role in helping all kinds of music to flourish in Nashville. Now in its 26th year, the Symphony Ball is one of the Nashville Symphony’s two yearly fundraisers. Since its inception in 1985, it has raised a total of more than $6.5 million.

Nashville Symphony Legacy Society leaving a legacy, building a future When Schermerhorn Symphony Center opened to the public in 2006, we envisioned our concert hall serving many generations for decades to come. If you have that same vision for the Nashville Symphony, then a planned gift can become your ultimate demonstration of commitment and support. You can help us plan for our future — and your own — through this creative approach to philanthropy and estate planning, which allows you to make a significant contribution to the Nashville Symphony while also enjoying income and tax benefits for you and your family. Great orchestras, like all great cultural institutions throughout history, are gifts to posterity; they are built and bestowed to succeeding generations by visionary philanthropists. To find out more about planned giving opportunities, please visit: NashvilleSymphony.org/plannedgiving.
The Nashville Symphony Legacy Society honors those patrons who have included the Symphony in their estate planning

Led by Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero and President & CEO Alan Valentine, the Nashville Symphony has a growing international reputation for its recordings and innovative programming. With 140 performances annually, the 84-member orchestra is an arts leader in Nashville and beyond, offering a broad range of classical, pops and jazz concerts, special events and children’s concerts. Each season, the orchestra reaches more than 200,000 Middle Tennesseans through its education and community engagement programs. These include the One Note, One Neighborhood initiative, which provides music education services to public schools in need of resources and support. As a national and international ambassador for the citizens of Tennessee, the Nashville Symphony has received far-reaching acclaim for its 19 recordings on Naxos, making the ensemble one of the most active recording orchestras in the country. These recordings have received 13 total GRAMMY® nominations and six GRAMMY® wins, most recently for the orchestra’s recording of works by American composer Michael Daugherty. Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the home of the Nashville Symphony, opened in September 2006. This cultural center in downtown Nashville has had a significant artistic, social and economic impact on the city.
