LETTER FROM BOARD CHAIR

s my term as Board Chair comes to a close, I look back over the past two years and am overwhelmed by the extraordinary support that the Middle Tennessee community has shown for the Nashville Symphony. This institution may have faced significant challenges over the past few years, but one thing is absolutely clear to me: The Nashville Symphony will continue to thrive thanks to the many patrons and donors who believe in the enduring power of our artistic and educational mission. The remarkable growth of our orchestra and the construction of Schermerhorn Symphony Center could not have happened without the extraordinarily generous donors who have provided a solid foundation for our institution, the bank lenders who financed our building, and the patrons who share their excitement and applause at every concert. Those very same parties are the reason we are still here today, and the reason we will continue to serve our community for decades to come. At the heart of everything we do, of course, are the musicians of the Nashville Symphony. These remarkable individuals made sacrifices over the past year that enabled the organization to control its expenses while at the very same time deepening its commitment to the entire Middle Tennessee region. Whether giving stunning performances of Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 to a packed concert hall or offering a free concert to students at I.T. Creswell Middle Arts Magnet School, our musicians have inspired countless children and adults through their artistry and love for music. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I would also like to acknowledge the Nashville Symphony staff, who along with our musicians have worked tirelessly to provide a strong, sustainable foundation for our organization. Your perseverance resulted in a banner year for the Nashville Symphony and promises many great things to come. Lastly and most importantly, I want to say “thank you” to the people who matter most: our patrons, our donors and our volunteers. You have lifted the Nashville Symphony up with your love, joy and support. You’ve provided for our success by purchasing tickets, making contributions and giving your time and talents to ensure that future generations of Tennesseans have the opportunity to experience the thrill of live orchestral music. FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

uring my 16 years with the Nashville Symphony, I’ve experienced some amazing highlights, including two trips to Carnegie Hall, the opening of Schermerhorn Symphony Center and multiple GRAMMY® Awards for our recordings. It’s hard to imagine greater achievements, but I can truly say that I am every bit as proud of the work that our remarkable musicians and staff accomplished during the 2013/14 season. Our organization has experienced significant challenges over the past few years, but we have emerged stronger than ever, as so clearly indicated by the milestones we marked during this past season. We set an all-time ticket sales record for our organization, with an astounding $8.6 million in revenue. Just as significantly, we saw growth in our concert attendance across the board, with more people coming to Schermerhorn Symphony Center to enjoy music of all genres — foremost among those the great orchestral repertoire. But performing timeless works by Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart is only part of what we do at the Nashville Symphony. As Music City’s resident orchestra, we are every bit as committed to advancing the art of classical music, making it relevant to our own community and keeping it thriving in the 21st century. During 2013/14, we had several exciting opportunities to fulfill this mission, most notably with the commissioning and world premiere of a piano concerto by pop star and Nashville Symphony board member Ben Folds. This project speaks to the very heart of our identity — ready to take creative risks and connect with new audiences. Along with this project, which was recorded for future release, the Nashville Symphony stayed busy with a number of other recording projects, releasing new works by Béla Fleck, whose banjo concerto The Impostor was commissioned and premiered by the Symphony; Richard Danielpour, whose moving A Woman’s Life pays tribute to the late Maya Angelou;

and Roberto Sierra, whose Sinfonía No. 4 infuses orchestral music with lively Latin rhythms. Over the ensuing year, we’ll see even more of our recordings reach the public, as forthcoming releases highlight works by Stephen Paulus and Joan Tower, two of the most important voices in orchestral music today. Amid so many new and exciting projects, we didn’t forget our roots, as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our Nashville Symphony Chorus. This ensemble has truly blossomed, and its remarkable quality was recognized this year with an invitation to perform at the prestigious Cincinnati May Festival. Our Nashville Symphony musicians — the heart of our organization — performed at the top of their game as well, fulfilling the promise of Schermerhorn Symphony Center as a world-class venue for a truly outstanding orchestra. And their hard work wasn’t limited just to the concert stage, as they went out into the community and engaged students and music lovers of all ages and backgrounds, offering a staggering 150,000 hours of free programming.

We have many reasons to be proud of our work over the last year, but one in particular stands out: The remarkable support that you have shown your Nashville Symphony. In addition to breaking ticket sales records, we raised more money than ever in 2013/14 — a total of $6 million, or 71 percent more than the previous year’s fundraising total. As we strive for even greater artistic heights in the year ahead, and as we seek to reach even more people in our community, we will never forget that everything we do is possible because of you. uch like Nashville itself, Music City’s resident orchestra celebrates both tradition and innovation. At this intersection of cultural heritage and cutting-edge creativity, the Nashville Symphony preserves, promotes and expands the American orchestral repertoire while paying homage to the masters.

FROM THE MAESTRO I am deeply honored to work with the musicians of the Nashville Symphony, who show tremendous skill, sensitivity and creativity in each and every performance they give. We are so lucky to have an orchestra that can play anything that winds up on their music stands, whether it’s a beloved piece of repertoire by Beethoven or Mozart, an expansive work by Mahler or Strauss, or a technically challenging piece of new music that will receive its first-ever performance right here on our own stage. I feel every bit as privileged to perform for our audiences at Schermerhorn Symphony Center and across Middle Tennessee. You embrace everything we do with genuine enthusiasm, anticipation and excitement. The Nashville Symphony is YOUR symphony, and we wouldn’t be able to achieve our high level of performance without your support.

During the 2013/14 season, Middle Tennessee audiences enjoyed some of the most powerful and lasting music in the repertoire, including performances of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 and Vaughan Williams’ epic Symphony No. 1 “A Sea Symphony.” True to its mission of championing this country’s greatest composers, the orchestra also explored the full range of American music in its Aegis Sciences Classical Series, with classics by Barber, Bernstein and Copland, crowd-pleasing pieces by John Williams and John Adams, and recent works by Joan Tower, Stephen Paulus and Nashville-based pop star Ben Folds. Throughout the year, a star-studded lineup of soloists visited Schermerhorn Symphony Center to perform everything from classical to pop to jazz, with highlights including violinist Itzhak Perlman, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and pianist Jeremy Denk. World-renowned soprano Renée Fleming joined the Nashville Symphony in September to celebrate the opening of the season, entrancing the audience with her renditions of Gershwin’s “Summertime” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” The Nashville Symphony Chorus brought the Classical Series to a close in May with breathtaking performances of Brahms’ A German Requiem.

ashville is unique among American cities for its wealth of musical talent, and the Nashville Symphony loves to collaborate with its hometown artists, from bassist Edgar Meyer to banjoist Béla Fleck to composer Conni Ellisor. During the 2013/14 season, the Nashville Symphony teamed with Nashville Ballet and Minnesota Orchestra to commission a new Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by pop star Ben Folds. A strong supporter and current Symphony board member, Folds joined the orchestra on March 13-15, 2014, to give the world premiere performances of his new composition, which he will perform with more than 30 orchestras across the United States and around the world over the next year. In addition to three sold-out evening performances, Folds and the orchestra also played the piece for hundreds of local high school students as part of the Nashville Symphony’s free Young People’s Concerts. Having played in school bands during his youth, Folds knows firsthand just how life-changing music education can be : “We see so much emphasis on what’s divisive, how things are unable to work together. What a difference it makes when you see people working in concert with this incredible musical tool that has hundreds of years of wisdom behind it.” Following the performances at Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the orchestra and Folds collaborated with the Nashville Ballet in May to perform the new concerto at TPAC, with original choreography by Nashville Ballet Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling.

s part of its quest to share its music with listeners both near and far, the Nashville Symphony has maintained an active recording schedule over the past 15 years. The 2013/14 season was especially busy for the Nashville Symphony, kicking off in August with the Decca release of banjoist Béla Fleck’s The Impostor, which received its world premiere two years earlier at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. This pioneering concerto for solo banjo has enjoyed considerable attention and acclaim, with the online classical music publication Alto Riot calling it “Fleck’s most ambitious effort on an unimaginable scale…a stirring testament to his undeniable gift of storytelling without speaking a word.”

In the fall, Naxos released two more Nashville Symphony recordings, both highlighting composers well known to Nashville audiences. Richard Danielpour’s Darkness in the Ancient Valley features two remarkable soprano performances with the orchestra — one by Hila Plitmann on the title track, the other by Angela Brown on A Woman’s Life, an adaptation of texts by the poet Maya Angelou. Released just two months later, Roberto Sierra’s Sinfonía No. 4 is a kaleidoscopic survey of the Puerto Rican-born composer’s work, which infuses classical forms with Latin rhythms and flavors. Even as these recordings were hitting the market, the orchestra was already working on three more projects, starting with Stephen Paulus’ Grand Concerto for Organ and Orchestra. This large-scale work completes a recording project begun the previous year with two additional Paulus compositions, Veil of Tears and Three Places of Enlightenment. Dedicated to the composer, who suffered a stroke during the production, this recording is set for release in fall 2014 and will feature four of the orchestra’s principal string players: Jun Iwasaki, Carolyn Wann Bailey, Daniel Reinker and Anthony LaMarchina. The Nashville Symphony launched its first-ever Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for another forthcoming release, this one by Joan Tower. More than 80 people responded and helped us reach our goal of $15,500. Buoyed by this support, the orchestra recorded a short work, “Chamber Dance,” in October, then finished the album a month later with recordings of “Stroke” and Tower’s Violin Concerto, the latter featuring Cho-Liang Lin. Thanks to our generous project backers, this recording will be released in spring 2015. The Nashville Symphony wrapped up its active recording season in May with a trip to historic RCA Studio A on Nashville’s legendary Music Row, where the orchestra teamed up with pop artist Ben Folds to record his new Concerto for Piano. As with Fleck’s banjo concerto, this forthcoming release perfectly embodies the orchestra’s commitment to reaching new audiences with adventurous, genre-defying collaborations.

FROM THE CHORUS DIRECTOR It has been a wonderful year getting to know the many singers of the Nashville Symphony Chorus. Their attention, focus and passion for great choral music are an integral part of this organization. These volunteers, with their countless hours of preparation and dedication, offer an incredible gift to this community and allow the great choral orchestral masterpieces to come to life.

The Chorus kicked off its concert season in October with two aquatic-themed pieces: Beethoven’s rarely performed Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 1 “A Sea Symphony.” Following its annual performances of Handel’s Messiah in December, the Chorus welcomed the new year with a busy schedule, starting with its March choral concert, Voices of Spring. Two months later, the ensemble traveled to Ohio to perform at the prestigious Cincinnati May Festival, joining the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati May Festival Chorus in a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of a Thousand.” The Chorus closed its 50th anniversary season with three full houses in attendance for performances of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Brahms’ A German Requiem. At the concert, bass singer Richard Hatfield was presented with an official proclamation from the Tennessee General Assembly in recognition of his 50-year membership with the Chorus. Here’s to another 50 years of great music from the Nashville Symphony Chorus!

As I move forward leading the Nashville Symphony Chorus, it is my hope to create and lead a robust choral education initiative that can complement the immense work that the orchestra already does to promote music education. We have already sowed some of the seeds for this initiative in this 50th anniversary season, and I am looking forward to seeing how this aspect of our work grows in the coming years.

he Nashville Symphony is committed to sharing its music with everyone in our community. To fulfill this important mission, we offer a variety of free community engagement programs designed to meet people where they live, work and play across the Middle Tennessee region. We also believe that Schermerhorn Symphony Center should be accessible to everyone, so we offer opportunities throughout the year to experience great music in our world-class facility at no cost.

COMMUNITY CONCERTS: 9,050 attendees / 6 concerts We had record-breaking attendance at our six Community Concerts throughout Middle Tennessee. These family-friendly summer programs presented the Nashville Symphony performing orchestral favorites at Centennial Park, Bicentennial Mall State Park, East Park, Crockett Park in Brentwood, Key Park in Lafayette and, for the first time ever, Two Rivers Park. In addition, the Symphony performed for a $5 admission fee at Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville and Cumberland University in Lebanon, with all proceeds going to local arts organizations in those communities. U.S. TRUST ONSTAGE: 628 attendees / 10 events

As a youngster, I was exposed to classical music through children’s programs at school. When I was able to drive I enjoyed outdoor concerts in the park made possible by symphony donors. I believe that these programs and a strong symphony presence give Nashville a genuine sense of community.

This intimate chamber-music experience invites the audience to join musicians of the Nashville Symphony onstage at Schermerhorn Symphony Center for a free evening of music and conversation. Ensembles of Nashville Symphony musicians perform select pieces and discuss composers, music history and more with audiences. Groups from Conexión Américas, the Center for Nonprofit Management and various FiftyForward chapters joined us for these concerts during the 2013/14 season. OFFSTAGE: 6,895 attendees / 82 events The 2013/14 season saw tremendous growth in our OffStage concert series. Ensembles and soloists from the Nashville Symphony performed, spoke to and connected with audiences throughout Middle Tennessee. More than 80 events took place in community centers, retirement communities, hospitals and other gathering spaces. These off-site performances experienced a significant boost thanks to the launch of a new house concert series, which saw members of the orchestra traveling to private homes for intimate living room performances. This annual fall event invites the entire community to enjoy a full day of free music and family-friendly activities at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Four stages located throughout the building feature more than 20 musical ensembles playing from noon till night. Performers at this year’s event, which took place on September 28, represented a variety of genres and included the Nashville Symphony, the Nashville Symphony Chorus, The Moonlighters Big Band, Music City Baroque, The Ukedelics, student performers and three different youth orchestras.

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS THANKS TO THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF OUR DONORS DURING THE 2013/14 SEASON, THE NASHVILLE SYMPHONY: Performed more than 100 concerts at Schermerhorn Symphony Center and at locations across Middle Tennessee. Collaborated with singers, soloists, dancers, actors and artists of all genres to perform a breathtaking array of music, from classical and jazz to pop and country. Reached more than 100,000 children and adults through free education and community engagement programs tailored to the needs of local schools and communities. Offered more than 150,000 hours of free programming to people of all ages and backgrounds. Welcomed more than 20,000 students to its free Young People’s Concerts — a record attendance figure. Commissioned pop musician Ben Folds to compose a new piano concerto, which sold out three consecutive performances with the Nashville Symphony. Folds is set to perform his piece with more than 30 orchestras, both in the United States and around the world, by the end of 2014.

ACCOMPLISH

Celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Nashville Symphony Chorus with performances of Handel’s Messiah, Brahms’ A German Requiem and Vaughn Williams’ A Sea Symphony, along with a trip to the Cincinnati May Festival to perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 8. Launched or completed six different recording projects championing the work of America’s leading composers:

• Béla Fleck: The Impostor

• Richard Danielpour: Darkness in the Ancient Valley

• Roberto Sierra: Sinfonía No. 4

• Stephen Paulus: Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra (Three Places of Enlightenment)

• Joan Tower: Violin Concerto

• Ben Folds: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra

Successfully funded its Joan Tower recording project through a Kickstarter campaign, which reached its goal of $15,500. Received a $20,000 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to fund a second Richard Danielpour recording in March 2015. Set an all-time ticket sales record, with more than $8.6 million in sales, a 26 percent increase over the previous year’s ticket sales total. Raised more than $6 million in Annual Campaign donations, which represents a 71 percent increase over the previous year’s fundraising total. Notable gifts to the campaign included a $100,000 donation from Taylor Swift and $1.25 million in successfully matched challenge grants. Presented the Harmony Award to country singer Brad Paisley at the 29th annual Symphony Ball, which raised $416,000 for the Nashville Symphony. Raised $164,000 to support music education and the Thor Johnson Scholarship through the Symphony Fashion Show, presented by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra League. This year’s featured designer was Christian Siriano, with musical guest The Band Perry.

he Nashville Symphony demonstrates its commitment to music education by providing exceptional student programs at Schermerhorn Symphony Center and in classrooms across Middle Tennessee. We seek to serve the needs of all students, from those trying an instrument for the first time to those considering a career in the arts. Our full spectrum of offerings includes: A hands-on introduction to playing music through our interactive Instrument Petting Zoo Young People’s Concerts designed for students in grades K-12, with accompanying classroom curriculum materials and online listening guides for teachers The opportunity for students to attend Nashville Symphony Classical Series concerts for free The opportunity to learn directly from Nashville Symphony musicians through Sectionals, Side-By-Side Rehearsals and Curb Open Dress Rehearsals College and career readiness programs and internships for students interested in careers in the arts The Curb Concerto Competition, in which students compete for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Nashville Symphony

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTS: 20,053 attendees / 21 concerts

ENSEMBLES IN THE SCHOOLS: 1,978 students served / 15 ensemble visits

These concerts offer students of all ages a full orchestral performance at Schermerhorn Symphony Center, with programming tailored to specific grade levels. To help teachers connect the concert-going experience with the classroom learning experience, the Nashville Symphony’s Education Department develops in-depth lesson plans that align directly with Common Core State Standards.

For students who can’t attend our Young People’s Concerts, this program brings small groups of Nashville Symphony musicians to area schools for ageappropriate presentations. Young listeners get to experience a performance up-close, learn new concepts and interact with the musicians.

Young People’s Concerts reached more students than ever this season, and included a partnership with Nashville School of the Arts, whose dance students performed Stravinsky’s Firebird for third- and fourth-graders. Pop star Ben Folds performed his brandnew Concerto for Piano to a packed house of rapt high-school students. This season also saw a series of in-school performances, bringing the entire Nashville Symphony to perform concerts in auditoriums and gymnasiums throughout Middle Tennessee, including I.T. Creswell Middle Arts Magnet School, Brentwood Middle School, Columbia State Community College and Nashville School of the Arts.

SECTIONALS AND SIDE-BY-SIDE REHEARSALS: 496 students / 44 sectionals

IS IT A FIDDLE OR A VIOLIN? 1,524 attendees / 12 events This program is presented in partnership with the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum and explores the differences and commonalities between classical and country music. During this only-in-Nashville field trip, students in grades K-5 tour the Hall of Fame and Museum and Schermerhorn Symphony Center, then experience a live musical performance. CURB OPEN DRESS REHEARSALS: 2,851 attendees / 9 dress rehearsals During Curb Open Dress Rehearsals, we invite students to observe what it takes to polish an orchestral program before the first performance. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a post-concert discussion with the conductor or guest soloist. This year, students got to meet and speak with Nashville Symphony Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, Ben Folds and saxophonist Branford Marsalis, among others. CLASSROOM CLASSICS FREE TICKET PROGRAM: 875 tickets issued / 27 concerts This program provides free concert tickets to middle- and high-school students, along with an accompanying parent or chaperone, giving them the chance to hear the Nashville Symphony perform an evening Classical Series concert. COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS: 571 students / 10 events The Nashville Symphony is proud to work with high schools and colleges to introduce students to careers in the arts, both on and off the stage. Whether students are interested in audio engineering, orchestra management or arts administration, we offer internships, job-shadowing opportunities and meet-and-greets with staff and musicians throughout the year. During the 2013/14 season, we offered opportunities to students through collaborations with the MNPS Intersession program and VSA Tennessee. 18

Student ensembles receive coaching, hands-on instruction and invaluable insights from members of the Nashville Symphony. This year we partnered with youth orchestras, college ensembles and school programs throughout Middle Tennessee. SUZUKI LESSONS: 775 Lessons Offered in collaboration with the W.O. Smith Music School, these free lessons invite at-risk children in grades K-5 to study violin through the Suzuki method. Led by Nashville Symphony violinists Deidre Bacco and Anna Lisa Hoepfinger, this program encourages strong family involvement as parents and guardians learn alongside their children. CURB YOUTH SYMPHONY AND CONCERTO COMPETITION: 638 participants The Curb Youth Symphony at the Blair School of Music is composed of committed young musicians from throughout the region. Nashville Symphony musicians work with these students throughout the year, providing guidance that can only come from years of experience. The program culminates in the annual Side-By-Side Concert, with the Curb Youth Symphony and the Nashville Symphony performing together each spring at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The Curb Concerto Competition is a unique opportunity for gifted high school students from across the state to compete for the honor of performing as a soloist at the Nashville Symphony’s Side-by-Side Concert. Violist Olivia Palazzolo took top honors this year with her performance of Bartók’s Viola Concerto. AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS: 190 students / 15 site visits We partner with Nashville After Zone Alliance (NAZA), an initiative of the Mayor’s Office, to deliver innovative, interactive programs at multiple sites throughout the city. These programs serve at-risk middle-school students in a collaborative afterschool setting.

hat a difference a year makes! During 2013, Schermerhorn Symphony Center was on the brink of foreclosure and the future of our extraordinary Nashville Symphony was uncertain. Today, we are stronger and better positioned to fulfill our mission of engaging the community with excellent performances and education programs, both in the concert hall and throughout the region. Lots of important events occurred last year. Three of the largest were: WE RESTRUCTURED OUR DEBT – Our banks agreed to accept a $35 million cash payment and a $20 million mortgage note payable to resolve all our outstanding bond debt and our related interest rate swap liability. We recorded a $39 million non-cash gain on the transaction and significantly reduced our future debt service requirements. WE CHANGED OUR OPERATING MODEL – In addition to restructuring our debt, we restructured our operations. We outsourced food services, expanded our concert offerings and cut our operating budget. We expect 2014 to show the benefit of these moves and are on track to reduce annual operating expenses, including debt service, by about $10 million. WE RECEIVED A CLEAN AUDIT OPINION – The prior year audit report expressed “substantial doubt about the Association’s ability to continue as a going concern.” The 2013 report has no such qualification. This is largely because we restructured our debt and changed our operating model. Thank you for your interest in, and commitment to, the Nashville Symphony. We hold ourselves to a high standard of accountability, and throughout this process have remained focused on preserving and advancing our missionrelated programs and activities to be good stewards of your investment.
