WHY? Am I doing this project

11

Torjoman: We speak creativity

I was listening to Simon Sinek’s TED Talk where he powerfully proves that people

“don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it”. He explains that the goal is not to sell to people what you have; the goal is to connect with people who believe what you believe. I had heard this talk before and it resonated but this time around it literally stopped me in my running tracks, Simon’s theory is not his opinion; it’s a proven fact based on biology, not psychology, and the study of the human brain by real scientists. So, I realized something was definitely off and thought to myself, if you don’t know why you do what you do, how can you expect anyone to follow you! I believe that art is a language that everyone can read, art gives voice to individuals, art is self-expression, art moves you, art makes one feel alive, it unleashes our passion and imagination, art touches our souls. It is power, it is acceptance. Not only does it bring us together and makes us think about the world in a different way, but it can teach us that It›s okay to be different. And I also believe that reading is a way to escape and a pleasure: books allow you to travel to new worlds without even leaving your place, to know what other people think. By reading you meet new characters, you can live the lives that normally you don’t get to live. Books are a great resource for 12

discussions, and we read to know that we are not alone. I was extremely passionate about reading and doing art, AND the idea to Integrate the two. I read a report about the reading rate in the Arab world; if average of reading time for the urban person is about 200 hours a year, for the Arabian person is 6 minutes a year. It was a shocking discovery, so me and my friends decided to do something about that; because we envision a world of people with open minds, readers, artists, culture lovers. We thought we should start with ourselves, thus we decided to create a book club that will encourages us and the people we know

to read more and discuss what we read. since we’re art students we came up with idea of something that combines reading and artistic creativity. We will need to have a special place, dedicated to it, where we can meet, discuss the books, and translate what we read into a piece of art. This place could be more than a residence only for us ,it could be also a place for our friends, family, colleges, everyone who loves reading and art. Everyone is welcome to express himself by doing art, enjoy reading a book while drinking a warm cup of coffee at a cozy environment: we wish Turjuman to be a REFUGE for us, a place that looks like us, a place where everyone will be feeling comfortable in a place like HOME.

WHERE? Identifying the place

Torjoman: We speak creativity

Jabal al weibdeh it’s one of Amman’s hills and is located in the middle of the capital of Jordan, in the area comprised between Downtown and Abdali and near to Jabal Amman, the heart of the city. It is one of Amman’s oldest districts undergoing a transformation into a “hip place”, home to some of Amman’s trendiest cafes, galleries, startups, new restaurants and it is particularly popular among artsy crowd.

JABAL AL LWEIBDEH The heart of the old city of Amman

Today, Weibdeh is “the hill of culture”: it hosts more than 60 schools, Art museums, Academic institutes, Associations, Galleries, Theaters, Cinemas, Literature, art and political unions, Sports Clubs, Foreign Embassies and Cultural Centers. Jabal Al Luweibdeh was settled by the Ottomans. Its name can be related to a plant; it is also said that it’s called weibdeh because of the Hyenas which ware Sintering* there; or that it comes from “Stable” as it was used by sheperds. The favourite interpretation is “Jasmin mountain” as you can hardly find any house in weibdih without this scented flower. It features a huge variety of old houses and buildings dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century and it has a narrow old streets that gives it a unique flavor. The modern stone villas built into the hillside of the district are small and tasteful with none of the kitschy additions that appear so often in other parts of Amman. The smell of Jasmin flower is all over the place; pine trees offer natural shade from the summer sun and scent the air with a delicious woody smell in the rainy winters.

Torjoman: We speak creativity

The neighborhood’s little corner shops, family-run patisseries and earthy vegetable stores belong to a time before supermarkets and chain stores. Public transport is available near to Luweibdeh and the area is connected with the surrounding neighborhood by beautiful staircases that make this place very special. Walking down the street you can see old men playing table games (like Backgammon), streets are quieter and there is a feeling of authenticity about Lweibdeh: no frills, no props, no Ammani teenagers playing it cool. Nowadays it is a multicultural place, so you might hear the sound of church bells mixed with the sound of prayer and Arabs and Foreigners are living equally in the area. The people of Weibdeh even celebrate together “el weibdeh carnival with Angham of music. Weibdeh is an historical location and traditionally has been inhabited by fluent population, mainly constituted of artists, directors, writers, poets, politicians and even members of the Royal Family. The laid-back nature of this part of town has traditionally led to it being favored by artists and the galleries that represent them. 17

Torjoman: We speak creativity

While Darat Al-Funun and the nearby Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (Hosni Fareez St), the country’s premier showcase for contemporary Arab and Islamic art with a 2,000-strong collection of works, represent the artistic elite, Lweibdeh is also home to many smaller, more experimental art venues. Notable among these is Makan (Nadim Al-Mallah St); housed in a small villa behind Al-Saadi Mosque, this alternatively minded venue often showcases work deemed too daring for more established galleries, such as Diala Al-Khasawneh’s 2008 exhibition The First Bra Boutique, which told the stories of different women and their first bras. Once you’ve had enough of art, head for pretty Kuleyet Al-Sharia Street. Running from the Sharia Mosque to Paris Square, this is the heart of Lweibdeh. It is where you’ll find Al-Khal, a falafel shop that aside from the regular repertoire of deep-fried chickpeas also does Amman’s best mfaraket beid (our local version of an omelette). Automat, on Paris Square, is a great old manaqeesh snackbar. Running off the square (it’s actually a circle) is what’s known locally as Butchers’ Street, which is always heavy with the aroma of charred kofta. It’s also where you’ll find Abu Murad, which serves terrific arayes (minced meat) sandwiches. Those with a sweet tooth are also catered for on Jabal Lweibdeh, particularly

20

at Fairuz (Al-Sharia St), one of Amman’s older patisseries, which does top-notch millefeuille and eclairs. For a purer cocoa hit, head to Chocoholic (Al-Sharia St), a new coffeeshop serving an array of drinks with chocolate as the prime ingredient, as well as sheesha. And also you can Take your laptop, a book, or go with friends and family to chit-chat over good coffee or tea at Rumi or fan ow shie café ;small coffee shops and tea bars, that serves good coffee and tea, and healthy breakfast specially traditional items. plays good music, and has a clean smoke-free environment. Luweibdeh embodies home to me ; exploring a different way meaning home it’s a place of escape, comfort, amenities, coziness, love, even solitude in a good unique way . Furthermore a unique experiences.
