Fire destroys boat at Boca Chica From NAS Key West Public Affairs

N

aval Air Station Key West Fire and Emergency Services and units from Monroe County Fire Rescue extinguished a fully engulfed boat fire Wednesday night at Boca Chica Marina. The fire, reported at 9:01 p.m., started in the boat’s galley as the owner was frying chicken, according to FES Chief C.J. Krieger.

The oil ignited and fire spread quickly, destroying the 2001 46-foot custom-built Catamaran, Krieger said. The live-aboard, whose name wasn’t released, fell as he ran from the fire and was taken to Lower Key Medical Center, where he was checked as a precaution and released, Krieger said. Fire officials were alerted to the fire by alarm pull-boxes located on see fire page 2

Key West will see partial solar eclipse By MC2 Cody Babin Southernmost Flyer

I

f you have been on social media any time in the last week, you probably already know about the solar eclipse that is coming up next week. But, what exactly does that mean to you? A solar eclipse is a celestial event in which the moon passes between the sun and the earth, blocking out all light. The event will only last about two minutes.

Monday will be the first time in 38 years that a total solar eclipse will be visible in the U.S. The main path the eclipse will follow is from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Although Key West won’t be treated to the total eclipse, we will be on the fringes, seeing a partial one. While you will be tempted to look up at the sun during the eclipse, it is recommended that see eclipse page 3

recently came across a devotion entitled “True peace exists only where truth reigns,” written by Jon MacArthur. With our current news around the world and here in America I thought it fitting to share a portion of it with you. “People often define peace as the absence of conflict, but God sees it differently. The absence of conflict is merely a truce, which might end overt hostilities but doesn’t resolve the underlying issues. A truce simply introduces a cold war, which often drives the conflict underground, where it smolders until erupting in

physical or emotional disaster.” James 3:17 says, “The wisdom from above CHAPLAIN'S is first pure, CORNER then peaceable.” Godly wisdom, purity and peace go hand-in-hand. Peace is wisdom in action and is never NAS Key West Command Chaplain established at the expense of Lt. Cmdr. Scott Mason righteousness. It brings righteousness to bear on the situation, seeking to eliminate the source of conflict and create right relationships. the marina piers, he said. “They worked well.” As firefighters were making their way to the fire, other live-aboards untied the mooring lines and pushed the Catamaran away from the dock to protect

nearby boats. Krieger said Monroe County arrived with multiple fire apparatus and ambulance. FES and MCFR train together on a routine basis and respond to requests of mutual aid when needed. The fire completely destroyed the Catamaran, and in the process burned any fuel onboard.

The NAS Port Ops team responded and determined there was no spillage in the water. The Coast Guard also was notified and responded. FES left the scene at 12:30 a.m., Krieger said, adding the boat’s owner will work with the marina and his insurance company in getting the remaining debris removed.

Changes like these help us do just that.” Beginning Dec. 1, 2017, when these policy changes go into effect, COs may reinstate a Sailor’s rank to E4 after a minimum sixmonth waiting period who was reduced in rank to E3 by non-judicial punishment for minor offenses.
