ummer may be over but hurricane season isn’t. Tropical Storm Fiona, which is currently attempting to build in the Atlantic, is a reminder to procrastinators to complete their hurricane preparations.

Preparation tips include keeping you vehicle fuel tanks closer to full rather than empty and have emergency supplies, like food, water, propane and flashlights, ready. Military members and DOD civilians be ready to evacuate with important documents and paperwork already prepped to go.

he potential for mosquito-borne illnesses increases with number of mosquitoes and authorities say the best prevention is to rob the insect of its breeding habitat - standing water. Naval Air Station Key West along with Naval Branch Health Clinic have combined forces to distribute mosquito awareness flyers to all base housing in the coming weeks. “The tags (flyers) have information that can help people prevent mosquitos from breeding around their homes,” said Officer in Charge of Key West Naval Branch Health Clinic Cmdr. Duneley Rochino. “The flyers also tell residents how to protect themselves from bites when they are outside.” The door tags illustrate where to find standing water, which can become breeding areas for mosquitos, as well what type protective clothing and repellant to wear to avoid getting bit.

One of the easiest tasks is to make sure you’re information is up-to-date on the communications tree: AtHoc and the Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System. Whether it is a hurricane, storm or flood threat, or any other emergency, Naval Air Station Key West Emergency Operations

Manager Steve McBride can send information updates via the AtHoc system. The message is sent via emails and phone notifications. Military and civilians can register through their work computers; the AtHoc purple ball icon is found in the “hidden icons” folder at the bottom right of the computer screen.

“It’s so simple for people to do, especially if you have a navy.mil email address,” said McBride. “If they receive that message, they know it’s real. When I send out to all hands, it’s a realworld situation.” In addition to AtHoc, military members should see PREP page 5

his week school has officially started! Parents are cheering and children are back to the grind of learning new concepts. I remember when my kids looked forward to the first day of school. They were excited because they had new shoes, new teachers, new backpacks and supplies and new classmates. Now, my kids are dragging their feet, wanting just another day of summer. Nevertheless, my wife and I will be driving them to school because we know the importance of an education because we want them to move forward (and eventually move out) in life. When you reflect on life, it is likely you are like my kids. Many times we find ourselves excited for the next adventure in life. It could be college, new career, joining the military, moving or starting a new diet or workout routine. You are pumped each day because you have the opportunity to be something different. Then time progresses and the newness wears off. You look forward to all the breaks you get in school. The new career turns into a job. You see the world behind a desk. You find out that paradise comes with a cost. Your new diet becomes bland as you crave a glazed donut. Your workout is pushed to the side because your motivation is gone. So you are faced with a choice.

You can give up. You can just accept this is your life and get stuck. Or you can move forward. When I reflect back on my school years, I noticed something. As I continued to move forward in school, I discovered what I love to do. If you asked my grade-school CHAPLAIN'S self that I would CORNER be a chaplain, he would have replied back that he wants to be a doctor. If you talked to my high school self, NAS Key West he would say Command Chaplain that he wanted to be a nurse. Lt. It was not Ethan Everts until my third year of college that I discovered how much I loved learning about the Bible. It was then that I wanted to be a pastor. And it was not until after seminary that I decided to become a chaplain. In the process of life, there were times when I wanted to be done with school, quit when I was getting overwhelmed or found myself not liking what I was doing. If I would have quit or just accepted the medical field as my only option, I wouldn’t be writing this column today. I had to keep moving forward to discover my true joy. Now this applies to many facets in life. In marriage, they talk about the honeymoon effect where our love blinds us to the issues of our spouse but when

that is over, we no longer deny what we see. There is even something called the seven-year itch that is traditionally associated with couples separating because they get bored with each other. Spiritually, I find people starting a new discipline or join a new community of faith. However, overtime the excitement wears off or life gets in the way. As a result, they just give up or call themselves a failure not realizing this is normal and they need to press forward. I encourage you to keep pressing on. If you need newness, then discover it in what you are doing. Some people in the military are not careerists. Nonetheless, you have opportunity to meet new people, take college courses or see places you never would otherwise. If you marriage is in a rut then find ways to put a spark back into it. Change your routine of the same date-night activity. If it is spiritual, reflect on what is dissatisfying and change it. Volunteer in local and global missions that impact those in need. In the end, just keep moving forward. The lull in life is normal, so it is up to you to move forward! If you need to keep moving forward spiritually, come to the Truman Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Sundays for our Protestant worship service. If you are feeling stuck or ready to quit, give your chaplain a call at (305) 293-2318, Naval Air Station Key West, or (305) 292-8788. God bless.

keep their information on NFASS updated so the local command has access to contact and emergency information. “NFAAS provides valuable information to all levels of the Navy chain of command, allowing com-

manders to make strategic decisions which facilitate a return to stability [after an emergency or catastrophe],” states the Secretary of the Navy website. NFAAS allows Navy personnel to report accounting status, update contact/location information, complete a needs assessment and provide access to reference

information. While AtHoc updates must be done at installation computer, there are three ways Sailors and their families are able to access NFAAS: Logging in at https://navyfamily. navy.mil either on a mobile device or computer; calling the emergency call center at 1 (877) 414-5358 (TDD 1

(866) 297-1971); or visit the NAS Key West Fleet and Family Support Center on Sigsbee Park. In addition to AtHoc and NFAAS, another source of emergency information is the installation’s social media. NAS Key West’s Public Affairs Office continually posts updates during emergency situations on

NAS Key West Facebook and NASKeyWest Twitter. “Through our social media we can respond to questions, reports and even rumors pretty quickly, which helps in keeping people calm in what can be very anxious situations,” said Public Affairs Officer Trice Denny. The command ombuds-

•5 man for the squadron, unit, ship or installation also is a source that families should utilize in the event of an emergency, said officials at the Fleet and Family Support Center. And though hurricane season ends Nov. 30, it’s always a good idea to be ready for emergencies yearround.
