While pilots fly, TARPON trains AICs DEFY seeks Sailors to mentor ‘tweens’ By PO2 Cody Babin Southernmmost Flyer

ourteen Sailors from around the fleet converged on Naval Air Station Key West this week to receive air intercept control training at TARPON. The overall mission of TARPON is to provide TOPGUN quality control for visiting fighter squadrons while simultaneously providing training for visiting AICs on current TOPGUN instructions. “This year alone we hosted 89 guest [air intercept] controllers,” said TARPON Leading Petty

Officer PO1 Kevin Doran. “The controllers are from a number of fleets to include Japan, Hawaii, Spain, California, Virginia and Florida.” Key West is accustomed to accommodating training of this nature because it happens nearly every day, said Doran, noting that a lot of controllers have been here at some point in their careers. Not only is NAS Key West host to a variety of training operations air, water and land - operators say it is one the best places to train. see tarpon page 5

re you ready to step into the role of mentor and help guide children as they prepare to enter their middle school years? Naval Air Station Key West is currently seeking enthusiastic, fun-loving, positive adult role models to serve as mentors for its yearlong Drug Education for Youth program. DEFY is known as a substance abuse prevention but it’s also a comprehensive life skills program

specifically designed for military dependents aged 9 - 12. The program primarily focuses on deterring at-risk behaviors by giving these “tweens” the tools they need to resist drugs and develop positive social skills. A key component of DEFY is the volunteer who becomes a mentor and role model, said Senior Chief Clyde Anderson, program coordinator. “I think Sailors will find this to be a very rewarding experience,” Anderson said. “It’s also a great see defy page 3

ob Hope once said, “Laughter is an instant vacation. Giving is a twoweek cruise - with pay.” He gave us a great way to look at this time of the year, as well as the other eleven months. We are already in the month of December and it’s the time of lights, schools on break, having children home for the holidays, and family and friends gathering to exchange gifts or just enjoy fellowship. Let me challenge you to think about giving to those you love as well as those who are in need. I remember a time when my family and I were stationed in San Diego and we were wrapping up our day of gallivanting around town and about to head home. We started to walk to our van in the store parking lot when a young man in his late 20’s

approached me for money that he said he wanted to buy food. At the time it was just my wife and my two boys. I saw my boys look at me while I answered the stranger asking for money. I told the CHAPLAIN'S young man that CORNER I was willing to buy him a meal if he was willing wait. It was fine with him and so I went across NAS Key West the street and Command Chaplain purchased a Lt. meal and drink Scott Mason so that my fellow neighbor could eat. After I had delivered the food I began to have the joy of giving well up inside of me, making me feel like I was on a “two-week cruise.” My family and I had the great privilege to see and provide for this young man a few more times and to just talk with him and enjoy the fellowship with a total

stranger who was now a friend. I don’t know what that young man is doing today. I hope that he is well and is able to benefit from me and my family taking the time to give just such a simple thing as food and time. I don’t write this story to boast but I want you to know that giving can be such a great reward because I have experienced it myself. So please, take a little time to share the gift of giving this time of the year, as well as the other eleven months. Let this December be your start. I hope your time reading this article has encouraged you. Please come and join us on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at Truman Annex Chapel for worship service. Visit our Facebook page - Truman Chapel - for upcoming events. If you are in need of chaplain care, please call your chaplains at 305-293-2318, Naval Air Station Key West, or 305-2928788, Coast Guard Sector Key West.

Manage social media to avoid hacking risks From Navy Region Southeast Public Affairs

M

ost of us look forward to the holidays to relax and enjoy family, friends and holiday fun. We’re taught to use operational risk management for our holiday recreational activities, but what about for our use of social media? Facebook, Instagram, Tumbler, Marco Polo and Snapchat are a few of some of the trendier social media applications. It all seems like harmless fun, but did you know that social media can cause you to become a victim if you are not careful? Information on your social media account can be used

to steal your identity, determine your actual location and, depending on the information loaded into the application, even steal your financial information, including debit or credit card information. How can you avoid this? Tom Ewert, an information systems security officer and senior cybersecurity analyst at Navy Region Southeast has a suggestion: “My best recommendation for social media safety is to lock down permissions to friends only, if you can,” he said. “If you can’t lock down permissions to friends only, be careful what you share with everyone.” Consider that when you post on social media that you are on vacation it can let a criminal

know your home may be empty. “Even posting a simple photo can provide a criminal information about you,” Ewert said. “Learn the features of your camera and disable any settings that tag the photo with a location. Geographic coordinates are included in the background data of most pictures today.” Ewert also suggests that when accepting friend requests, e-mail or call to confirm that friend has sent the request. Hackers can make a fake persona that looks like one of your friends to get access to your information. Ewert also stressed the importance of passwords, which should be changed occasionally to keep see SOCIAL page 4

opportunity to participate in the military community and have a real effect on our youth.” NAS Key West will kick off its DEFY program this summer and is now registering volunteers who will fill the role of a DEFY mentor. Volunteers must be over the age of 18, affiliated with the DOD and approved by the command. Volunteers are expected to participate for the entire year starting with an intensive summer component (Phase I) and monthly events throughout the school year (Phase II). Phase I is structured in a five-day residential or eight-

day non-residential format. Phase I includes educational trips, fitness activities, classroom learning and the President’s Fitness Challenge. Residential programs require volunteers to stay with the kids throughout the phase, sometimes in summer camp-like conditions. It reinforces the concepts and training conveyed in Phase I. The program meets usually one Saturday each month, although local program schedules vary. During Phase II, mentors and staff provide positive support during group mentoring sessions and interactive workshops that provide life skills training, team building and leadership skills.

“Participating as an adult mentor is no vacation,” said LaNorfeia Parker, deputy director of the Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Office. “It’s hard work and volunteers should not approach this opportunity with the illusion of being a DEFY mentor as an easy assignment,” Parker said. Volunteering also contributes to the personal development of service members, who learn from the experience. It’s an opportunity to build and maintain personal relationships with the youngsters and other staff and develop mentoring skills. The professional experience that volunteers gain from volunteering includes

management, logistics, administration, complex task completion and decisionmaking skills. Volunteers also gain valuable leadership experience through team building, leading teams and coaching. “I have kids and parents who to this day still let me know how our job helped their child’s confidence and ability to make the right decisions when they were exposed to drugs. It’s rewarding to know our job helps shape their future,” said PO2 Mirna Morales, a five-year DEFY mentor and volunteer.
