Expect increased traffic, bug-hunters for lobster mini-season FROM NAS KEY WEST PUBLIC AFFAIRS

(July 12, 2017) Sailors prepare to launch an F/A-18F Super Hornet attached to the ‘Blacklions’ of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 213 from the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). Traffic will pick up this weekend as tourists converge on the Keys for the annual spiny lobster miniseason, Wednesday and Thursday. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials remind tourists and locals alike that a rec-

reational saltwater license and a spiny lobster permit are required and size limitations are strictly enforced. In Monroe County, the bag limits - enforced on and off the water - are six lobsters per person per day. The purpose is to prevent multiple trips out to lobster on the same day. Buggers who are found

to possess lobster over the daily limit - or the total of the two-day event - can be cited. On July 11, six men from out of state were arrested for poaching hundreds of lobster out of season. They were charged with several hundred misdemeanors and could face prison time. They were caught after someone

noticed what they were doing and reported it to law enforcement. To report someone who is poaching or violating the limit, call the Fish and Wildlife Commission’s Marathon office at 305-2932320 and give the location of the where the boat is launching and returning. There are several regu-

lations specific to Monroe County. For example, while the spiny lobster season begins elsewhere at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, diving at night for lobster is not permitted in Monroe County and adjacent federal waters. Bully-netting and hoop-netting, however, are see LOBSTER page 3

Self-control

I

July 21 1946 - In the first U.S. test of adaptability of jet aircraft to shipboard operations, an XFD 1 Phantom lands and takes without catapults from USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB 42).

July 22 1964 - Four Navy divers submerge in Sealab I off Hamilton, Bermuda, for three weeks. The crew surfaces early on July 31 due to a tropical storm.

July 23 1950 - USS Boxer (CV 21) sets the record of crossing the Pacific, bringing aircraft, troops and supplies for the Korean War, steaming from California to Japan, in eight days and 16 hours.

am reminded daily about how I need to have self-control. May it be in my daily scheduling or tasking of being a chaplain or everyday being a father and husband. I must be able to control my actions because nobody is more in control of me than me. I came across an old, yet illuminating, story that may be able to put this insight of self-control into perspective. Three cowboys had been riding hard all day. There had been no time for lunch and dinner was still about an hour away. Two of the cowboys began talking about the big meals they were going to eat once they got to town. The third cowboy didn’t enter the conversation so they asked him, “Aren’t you hungry?” The cowboy shrugged his shoulders and said, “No.”

When the threesome arrived at their destination, they ordered large meals and started filling their empty stomachs. The third cowboy ate faster than the other two and reached for any food that wasn’t nailed to the table. The two cowCHAPLAIN'S boys laughed CORNER and reminded him that less than an hour ago he said that he wasn’t hungry. The third NAS Key West cowboy poetiCommand Chaplain cally said, “It Lt. Cmdr. wasn’t wise to Scott Mason be hungry then. There was no food.” As we see in this story, selfcontrol has wisdom along with it. At the time, the third cowboy didn’t need to remind himself of his hunger because the solution wasn’t there while they traveled on the trail.

We must use self-control in order be good stewards of our time, our finances, our relationships and our spiritual growth. Take the time to think about how you react to certain situations and use the wisdom that God provides in His word to be a guide - Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Please come and join us on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at the Truman Annex Memorial Chapel for worship service with our praise band and children’s church. Please visit our Facebook page (Truman Chapel) for upcoming events. If you are in need of chaplain care, please call your chaplains at 305-293-2318, Naval Air Station Key West, or 305-2928788, Coast Guard Sector Key West.

permitted at night. The law defines “night” as one hour after official sunset to one hour before official sunrise. Also, sport divers are prohibited from diving or snorkeling within 300 feet of improved residential or commercial shorelines, marinas and manmade structures. That prohibition includes canals, channel markers and bridges. This exception applies to all of unincorporated Monroe County. Homeowners, however, are allowed to dive and snorkel in front of their property to the center line

of the canal or 100 feet of open water. This includes residents of Sigsbee Park. The no-diving rule applies for three days before the sport season and during the first five days of the regular season, which runs from Aug. 6 - March 31.

com/license. An annual salt water fishing license costs $17 annually or $79 for a fiveyear license. The spiny lobster tag, which is required in addition to the fishing license, costs $5 annually, or $25 for a five-year tag. So, for the bug hunter who wants to try lobstering just for the season, the cost is $22; for the committed hunter, the cost is $104 for five years. Sigsbee Marina is open extended hours Wednesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., and has boat rentals and boat fuel for authorized users. The marina also is selling a lobster kit. Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay reminds lobster enthusiasts that miniseason attracts thieves looking opportunities to steal valuables from unattended boats. He urges boaters to remove electronics, fishing and diving gear and store it in a secure place. The public they will see an increase in traffic, particularly boats and trailers. “We enjoy all the visitors here in the Keys during the two day sport season,” said Ramsay. “But we want to make sure everyone is aware of the law, and is behaving in a responsible, and safe, manner.”

that has become urgent in the fight against ISIS. The A-10 is able to target enemy forces up close without risking friendly fire casualties because the pilots are flying slow enough to visually distinguish between enemy and friendly forces. “The A-10 is essentially a flying gun built around function,” said Cusson. “It provides close air support to ground troops and can even be utilized for search and rescue.” This is the first time the squadron has visited Key West for training, and the weather is much different than what they are used to. “Going from the deserts of Arizona to the paradise of Key West has been great for us,” said Cusson. “The humid conditions and new landscape not only offer a different terrain for the students, but also make the instructors more efficient.” The humidity has also proved to be a welcome challenge for the maintenance crew, Cusson added. Key West’s air space has proven to be effective as an A-10 training ground. “Key West is built perfectly for us,” said Cusson. “It helps us to train like we fight, and puts all of our graduates in the position that they are in now, overlooking troops on the ground at this very moment.”
