O

n June 5, Sailors worldwide will pause to remember the World War II Battle of Midway and the significance it played in establishing the U.S. Navy’s superiority on the seas. Naval Air Station Key West commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Midway with a 9 a.m. ceremony at Bayview Park in Key West. The public is invited to attend this recognition. The Battle of Midway was fought from June 4 - 7 near the Central Pacific island of Midway, the battle was considered the deciding battle of the war in the Pacific theater of WWII. Before this battle, the Japanese were on the offensive, capturing territories throughout Asia and the Pacific and had planned to capture Midway to use as an advance base, as well as to entrap and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Because of communication intelligence successes, the U.S. Pacific Fleet surprised the Japanese forces. And with the grit and determination of Sailors and aviators - led by the likes of admirals Chester W. Nimitz, Frank “Jack” Fletcher and Raymond A. Spruance, American forces sank four of the same Japanese carriers see Midway page 3

e are in the midst of summer and this month is Boating Safety Month. Now that I am a chaplain assigned to the Coast Guard in the Florida Keys, I am recognizing that boating safety is paramount. On a nearly daily basis I see the incredible Coast Guard men and women saving lives while at times risking their own, and educating boaters and conducting inspections to ensure everyone is prepared for disaster on the water. The Coast Guardsmen are effectively executing the mission day-in and day-out with great skill, expertise and compassion. They are prepared and “Always Ready.” If you need them this summer they will respond in an effective and timely manner. While we may be prepared for a disaster to strike when we are boating or when hurricanes are

nearing the shore, we should ask ourselves if we are prepared for when disaster strikes in our personal lives. I see so many people living great lives and having fun but so often they are unprepared for things to go wrong. As we prepare CHAPLAIN'S our personal lives CORNER for an evacuation in case of a hurricane, I ask you to take a personal inventory of your life. Who can you reach out to CG Sector Key West for help? What Command Chaplain do you have in Lt. your arsenal? Derek Henson What makes you who you are? When disaster strikes what will encourage you to go on, to not just survive but to thrive? I am often astounded by hearing people say “I didn’t think it could happen to me” in crisis. Scripture tells us in Matthew 5:45 (ESV) “So that you may be sons of your Father who is in

heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” For many faith is important in life, and I encourage you to study your faith before a crisis hits so you can stand firm when everything else is shaken. To those serving in the Coast Guard, thank you. Your sacrifice doesn’t go unnoticed; our communities appreciate all that you do. If you are seeking a church home, please reach out to the chaplains. We have a Protestant service at 10:30 a.m. Sundays at Truman Chapel; we also have great connections with local clergy with whom we can get you connected. Please visit our Facebook page (Truman Chapel) for upcoming events. If you are in need of chaplain care, please call your Chaplains at 305-293-2318, Naval Air Station Key West, or 305-292-8788, Coast Guard Sector Key West.
