he federal hiring freeze enacted in January, along with the transitory nature of Key West, have resulted in 84 vacancies at Naval Air Station Key West’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “The hiring freeze prevented us from filling vacancies as they became

open over the past couple of months,” said Tim Campbell, MWR director. “Some vacancies result as military permanent change of station moves occur, but generally we experience high turnover in some positions because our local population is often transient.” Positions are currently available in child care, food service, housekeeping, recreation and mainte-

nance, according to Human Resources Director Connie Odani. Flex, part and fulltime positions are available. MWR is now able to hire after going through a waiver process with Commander, Navy Installations Command. “We have requested and received waivers for positions that are currently vacant and will continue to

request waivers as vacancies occur,” Odani said. MWR provides services essential in supporting military members and the military mission, including childcare services through the Child and Youth Programs, berthing for detachments through Navy Gateway Inns and Suites, and physical readiness see jobs page 8

here was a mother in the grocery store trying to grab what she could while she had one child trying to climb out of the grocery cart and carried an infant in her arms. She was hoping she could get a few groceries before the baby woke up for her next meal. Her oldest held on tightly to the side of the cart while trying his best not to get distracted by all the colorful objects he passed as his mother was checking off the items she needed. They had only made it through part of the produce department when the mother grabbed a few oranges. As she was putting them in the bag the pile of fruit decided to continue in an avalanche to the floor. Of course, this disruption caused the couple by her to look over to see what was going on. I would like to say that this couple came to this young mother’s rescue but instead they looked down at the oranges, looked over at the mother, mumbled a few words while shaking their heads and walked off. This past Friday my family went to see our oldest son participate in his high school track meet. There were a group of local high school students sitting in

the stands watching the different events. One of the visiting schools had a young lady who was participating in the 100-yard hurdles. Toward the end of the race she tripped over the last three hurdles falling to the ground but she picked herself back up every time and finished the race. I would like to say that some of CHAPLAIN'S CORNER those students in the stands cheered for her as she persevered and finished the race but instead a large group of NAS Key West students began Command Chaplain to laugh abruptly Lt. and point at the Scott Mason young lady as she walked off the track. Stories like these remind me of the parable in the Bible about the Good Samaritan. In Luke 10:25-37, Jesus tells us a didactic story about a man who was beaten, stripped of his clothing and left half dead on the side of the road. This man was passed by and avoided by a priest and a Levite. Finally, a Samaritan comes upon him and helps the injured man. What really sticks out in this story is that Jews and Samaritans despised each other, yet this Samaritan still stopped to help this stranger. Jesus shared this story in response to

a question that was directed to him by a lawyer: “And who is my neighbor?” The first two stories shared above seem benign compared to the parable told in the Bible. Yet the lesson still applies when we must consider “who is my neighbor?” Your neighbor is not just the person that lives next to you, it’s not just the person you know and it’s not just the people that look like you or speak the same language as you. We are to love everyone as our neighbor. I know that sometimes it’s just easier to pretend like we don’t see the “beaten traveler” on the ground - for whatever reason - but as humans we have been created to love one another. So, the next time you think you are too busy, too tired, or you don’t know the person remember God commands us to love one another just as He has loved us. I hope your time reading this article has encouraged you. Please come and join us on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at Truman Annex Chapel for worship service with our praise band and children’s church. Please visit our Facebook page (Truman Chapel) for upcoming events. NAS Key West celebrates 124th chief birthday By MC2 Cody Babin Southernmost Flyer

N

aval Air Station Key West celebrated the 124th Chief Petty Officer birthday with a week’s worth of events and activities. On Monday the chiefs hosted a “Goat Locker Challenge,” that included an anchor pull, flipper run, trike obstacle course, and a sit-up/push-up competition. Tuesday, the chiefs organized a 5-kilometer run, and on Thursday held a “Lunch with the Chiefs” at the mess. The week was organized by NAS Key West’s newest TRIAD member, Command Master Chief Lee Friedlander. “The events were organized in an effort to highlight leadership and build decorum between Sailors,” said Friedlander, who is no stranger to celebrating this milestone at this magnitude. He has organized similar activities at previous commands. “I decided to engage chiefs and Sailors in a nonworking environment,” said Friedlander. “These activities build camaraderie as well as show chiefs in a different light.”
