aval Air Station Key West’s Environmental and Operations Maintenance divisions have been nominated for recognition at Friday’s 52nd Annual Federal Employee of the Year Awards Program. The Federal Executive Board of South Florida sponsors the interagency awards program each year to recognize the exceptional service and accomplishment of civilian and military service members who have dedicated their careers to public service. In 2014, the OMD crew received the Team Trade and Crafts Award, which was one of only 19 awards presented to federal employees representing Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties. President John F.

Kennedy introduced the first 10 Federal Executive Boards in 1961 for the principle purpose of strengthening and coordinating the activities of government operations outside the Washington, D.C. area. Today’s FEB network includes 28 FEBs, located in areas of significant federal populations. The annual awards complement Public Service Recognition Week, which runs this week. Celebrated annually since 1985, the week is a time when the nation recognizes individuals, throughout all levels of government, who have devoted their talents to the public sector, said Robert Woods, acting assistant secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs). “The Department of the Navy is made up of a diverse mix of individusee FEB page 7

Even though I am unable to celebrate my mother in person because we are separated by the miles, I will still honor her and give thanks for everything she has done for me as my mother. I will also help my children celebrate their mother and all that she does for them on a daily basis. For some this holiday can bring heartache. There are some who no longer have a mother to celebrate here on earth. There are others who have been unable to have children of their own. aval Air Station Key West’s security and emergency personnel participated in an active shooter drill Tuesday at the Naval Branch Health Clinic. The drill was an opportunity to practice active shooter response for personnel working in the clinic as well as train first responders. In order to be as realistic as possible for the employees at the clinic, as well as security responders, the shooter’s weapon fired blanks. Clinic personnel had received instruction on how to respond in active shooter situations and were able to put that knowledge into action. Responders, including Security, Fire and Emergency Services EMTs and the clinic’s corpsmen, practiced rescue and triage skills. All activity was monitored for safety. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Key West Police Department officers observed the event.

2015, according to the DOD Deployment Health Clinical Center. This is relatively consistent with the general population: One-in-five in the U.S. has a diagnosable mental health condition, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about 17 percent of U.S. adults are in a state of optimal mental health. Keys to maintaining mental health are good sleep, nutritious food, regular exercise, social connections
