t one time, the commissary used brown paper bags that sported the slogan “Military Wife - Hardest

Job in the Navy.” Times have changed - if the bags carried the slogan today, it would begin with “Military Spouse.” It took a couple hundred years before recognition was given to the spouses of

military members. It was President Ronald Reagan who signed Proclamation 5184 in 1984, establishing Military Spouse Appreciation Day. The intent was to recognize and honor the contributions

and sacrifices of military spouses. In his proclamation, Reagan discussed why military spouses deserved special recognition: “Since the early days of the Continental Army, the

wives of our servicemen have made unselfish contributions to the spirit and well-being of their fighting men and the general welfare of their communities. see Spouse page 3

ell, my wife and kids are addicted to Disney. Last month we once again went to the most magical place on earth for my boys’ birthdays. It is likely we will go there later this year when we PCS because we still have two days left on our tickets. We are pretty intense park hoppers, staying at Disney from 7 a.m. 11 p.m. or later. During that time, we enjoy the meal package, which includes desserts and drinks. On top of that, my boys received free desserts for their birthdays. There was a lot of sugar consumed. On a normal day in the Everts’ household, sugar is not consumed that often. Usually, treats are on the weekends or special occasions. Normally, we drink plain milk, water and occasionally juice or sweet tea. So, ingesting this much sugar is not something we are not accustomed. About midway through this trip, my oldest son turned to me while eating his Darth Vader cupcake and said he had had too much sugar. He then went on to say he didn’t want to eat sugar for a while after this trip. Despite his sweet tooth driving

And when it is something you do not normally consume, we CHAPLAIN'S want to partake CORNER in it whenever we can. Nonetheless, through my own life experiences I have learned that as we conNAS Key West tinue to sin, what Command Chaplain was once sweet starts to make us Lt. Ethan Everts feel uneasy and sick inside. It is at this point we have a choice: Leave it and return to the good things or continue to consume and ignore the warning signs. Thankfully, my son stopped eating the cupcake and just asked for water (he was drinking soda too). We all know what would have happened if he had not stopped consuming sugar stomach issues. The other hurdle he ran into after we came back was that he still craved sugar and forgot about the decree that he would have no more. Sadly, we sometimes treat sin

the same. We have dealt with the consequences, but still desire its taste. We have to choose not to partake. My wife has recently made diet changes that would be difficult for anyone to make, but she made a choice to do it. I am proud of her. There were struggles and pains in giving up sugar, but the benefits were worth it. I have other friends that completely eliminated sugar for years and feel better than ever. They had to be disciplined in the process. The process is the same with sin in our lives. Our depravity makes us crave it. However, through God’s Spirit and our discipline, we can overcome these temptations. Any sin is too much sin. You may have vowed to give up that struggle, but found yourself back in it. You have to decide you do not want it anymore. God is ready to help when you are truly ready to change! “Throughout the years, as the numbers of our married men and women in uniform have grown and as their military missions have become more complex and dispersed, their spouses have made countless personal sacrifices to support the Armed Forces. “In many instances, they subordinated their personal and professional aspirations to the greater benefit of the service family. Responding to the call of duty, they frequently endured long periods of separation or left familiar surroundings and friends to re-establish their homes in distant places. And there they became American ambassadors abroad. “As volunteers, military spouses have provided exemplary service and leadership in educational, community, recreational, religious, social and cultural endeavors. And as parents and homemakers, they preserve the cornerstone of our Nation’s strength - the American family.” Reagan said he signed the proclamation “in recognition of the profound importance of spouse commitment to the readiness and well-being of service members on active duty and in the National Guard and Reserve, and to the security of our Nation.” National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is the Friday before Mother’s Day. NAS Key West Sailor spotlight their spouses

Amber Lewis

Cherrelle Reese

Chasity Buchanan

ABH2 Ronald Lewis: My wife Amber is an incredible woman who I’m so grateful to have had in my life for the past four years. She is an awesome mother to our 5 year-oldson, Donovan. She is very supporting and has such a huge heart. She has been there for the family by sacrificing her time and energy during many deployments, PCS moves and taking care of the household when I’m not around. She currently works in the day and attends college at the night and still makes time to spend time with our son and me. I love and appreciate her love and support and words cannot express the way I feel about her. I love you Amber from “INFINITY AND BEYOND.”

ABH2 Jamarr Reese: Being married to my wife Cherrelle for the last four years has been amazing. She has been there for me throughout deployments and everything that comes with me being in the military, including picking up and moving away from family and friends. She provides support when I need it even while she’s working and going to school. I don’t know how I could have made it this far without her. I love her with everything I have and never take her for granted.

force in getting me back on the path to where and who I am today. She works full-time as a Patient Care Coordinator for Hear Again America, a local hearing aid testing and distribution center. She is mother to our wonderful children Kaylee, Mason and Katelyn. In spite of her responsibilities she makes our relationship a priority. She has supported me through PCS moves, eight non-selections for promotions and has also been there to celebrate the joy that comes with being selected to be a chief petty officer and limited duty officer. These words barely scratch the surface of who Chasity is and what she means to our family. We love you babe, thank you for being you!

ACC Kevin Buchanan: Chasity is quite frankly the best person I have ever known. When we met I was a bit off-course from where I should have been and she was a driving

‘New to the Navy’ mobile app updated with new content From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs The “New to the Navy” mobile application is a onestop resource for answers to many of the frequently asked pay and personnel questions Sailors may have, and now it’s even better. On April 29, the Navy updated the app providing more in-depth information, streamlining content location, and making overall performance improvements. Information additions include a new tab category “links and references,” which contains information and links legal services and voluntary education. The legal services section covers the types of legal assistance and support the judge advocate general provides, such as wills, notary,

etc. The VOLED section provides links to the Navy college program website, the web tuition assistance site, and much more. The update also adds pertinent information for reserve pay and personnel content. Additional new content consists of updated checklists and content changes. There is a section for Sailors to know what to do when they want to get married while on leave, and what to do when they’re getting ready to move to a new command. There are also updates to the list of the Navy’s common terms and acronyms to help new Sailors and family members learn to navigate the service’s alphabet soup. The application is available now on all mobile platforms via their respective application stores.

team,” noted Lt. Cmdr. Josh Melchert, FLC Jacksonville Regional Fuels Officer in a May 1 email announcing the selection. This is only the second time in the award’s history that it has been presented to an activity in Florida, according to NAS Key West Supply Officer Lt. Howard Milligan. “The award was established in 1988 to recognize superior performance in bulk fuel,” he said. “The

retail category was added in 1991. Naval Air Station Jacksonville received the award for 2012.” At Boca Chica Field alone, seven fuel trucks supplied 20 million gallons of J-P5 in more than 15,000 transactions during the year. “We hit a one-day record on Feb. 11, 2015, and then broke that record two days later with 212,614 gallons,” Milligan noted. “It’s a significant amount for the size of this base.” Fuels Division Property Administrator ABF1 Richard St. Clair is the lone Sailor assigned to the

fuels division, which operates under a contract with Hawthorne Services Inc. “I’m the only fuelie in the Keys,” said St. Clair, who arrived here a year ago. He has served on USS Stennis (CVN 74), USS San Diego (LPD 22) and USS Makin Island (LHD 8). “I have a great team here,” St. Clair said, crediting Terminal Manager John Sykes, a retired Navy ASC, and Hawthorne’s skilled operators. “They make sure the operations run smoothly on a daily basis,” he said. NAS Key West Com-

manding Officer Capt. Steve McAlearney recognized the team Tuesday at the Fuels Farm as Milligan unveiled the plaque and traveling trophy, which is now on display in the foyer of the command building, A-324, Boca Chica Field. After his remarks, McAlearney - an F/18 pilot - added, “and I appreciate how quick you guys turn events.” Naval aviators from the Operations Department and Fighter Squadron Composite (VFC) 111, who came to show their appreciation, nodded in agreement.
