or most, the kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the holidays. So keeping fire safety foremost in the kitchen during this joyous but hectic time is

important, especially when there’s a lot of activity and people at home. As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that large family feast, remember, by following a few simple safety tips you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family

safer from fire. Afterall, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. In 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,760 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving. Unattended cooking was by

far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. Whether your turkey comes from the oven or the fryer, safety should be the first ingredient in creating a successful holiday meal. Naval Air Station Key West Fire Chief C.J. Krieger notes the National

Fire Protection Association discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers because of the potential for burns and fires. Those fryers, however, continue to be popular with consumers. Krieger urges those who choose to fry a turkey to see turkey page 8

Every once in a while I like to read stories of inspiration, whether to help me think more deeply or to think about what I need to do to be a better child of God. So please enjoy this great story I read at www.sunnykyz. com. I hope will inspire you to be better as well: “The way we choose to respond when others make mistakes can cause them to feel ashamed or can allow them to remember our kindness and share our stories with future generations.” Michelle Sedas. “When I read this quote I can’t help but think of Doris, who was a little lady who lived in the memory care unit. “Doris had been a science teacher by profession, but she also was a very creative person. All around her room were dolls that she had made. They were the most interesting dolls I’d ever seen; each was very different from the other. “From what I gathered in talk-

ing with Doris is that she’d taken a class in doll making. One day while I was in her room she took one of the dolls out of the case to show me. She said that this was the first doll she had ever made. “This doll was very unusual with fine artistic work. The ceramic skirt was made of delicate ruffles. I was amazed that anyone could CHAPLAIN'S do such unique CORNER work. “As Doris was holding the doll very carefully she turned the doll in such a way that I could NAS Key West see a slight break Command Chaplain in one of the rufLt. Cmdr. fles on the skirt. Scott Mason Then she said, “Would you like me to tell you about this?” “Of course, I was curious to know what happened. Doris said that on the way to class she bumped the side of the skirt. She said she was devastated and almost didn’t go to class at all. “When it came her turn to show the doll to the teacher, she had to point out the break in the skirt. Doris felt for sure that the doll

would be rejected because of it. “Much to her surprise, the teacher told her she was just going to ignore this break and grade the doll on the other good qualities it had. Doris said this remark and attitude from the teacher changed her life. “She knew if that teacher hadn’t forgiven that small mistake she would never had made the rest of the dolls. “The quote at the beginning expresses what happened to Doris. This teacher could have made Doris feel ashamed by her mistake. But because of her willingness to ignore the mistake, Doris was sharing her kindness to the next generation.” Join us at 10:30 a.m. Sundays for worship service with our Praise Band and Children’s Church. This Sunday we will be at the Community Center on Sigsbee Annex. Please visit our Facebook page (NAS Key West Chapel) for upcoming events. turkey before adding it to hot oil. Extreme caution must be taken when immersing and removing the turkey from the fryer; be careful not to drop it back into the fryer, splattering the oil on the chef. Onlookers should steer clear of the cooking area, which should be away from any structure on a solid setting. That said, NFPA still urges those who prefer fried turkey to look for grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants that sell deep fried turkeys, or consider using a new type of oil-less turkey fryer. Cooks who plan to stay in the kitchen to prepare the holiday meal should also think safety by keeping the following in mind: Stay in the kitchen when

you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. Stay home while baking the turkey and check on it frequently. Keep children at least three feet away from the stove or oven when they are being used. Keep children away from hot food and liquids - steam and splashes from vegetables, gravy or coffee can cause serious burns. Keep the floor clear to avoid trip hazards. Keep knives out of the reach of children. Be sure electrical cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixers are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children.

be extremely careful and read the turkey fryer safety instructions. The NFPA promotes the following safety practices: Completely thaw and dry the turkey before immersing it in the fryer; a partially thawed or wet turkey will cause the oil to splatter and boil over, which can cause serious burns or fire. The fryers use a lot of oil, about five gallons. Determine how much oil to use by first filling the fryer with water and dipping the turkey into the fryer. From the displacement, you can determine the amount of oil that is needed. Again, Krieger said users should remember to dry the
