Safety: Key ingredient in holiday meal From NAS Key West Fire and Emergency Services

W

hether your turkey comes from the oven or the fryer, safety should be the first ingredient in creating a successful holiday meal. While the National Fire Protection Association discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers because of the potential for burns and catastrophic fires, those fryers continue to be popular

with consumers. The NFPA asks those consumers to remember the following safety practices: Turkeys must be completely thawed and dried of excess moisture before placing in the fryer, because a partially thawed turkey will cause the oil to splatter causing serious burns. The fryers use a lot of oil, about five gallons. Determine how much see safety page 4

argaret Craven wrote a novel titled “I Heard the Owl Call My Name.” In this book she tells of a young minister who was sent to the Kwakiutl Indians in a remote part of British Columbia. Through the course of his ministry, he learned these people do not have a word for “thank you.” It was confusing to the young man because these tribesmen were extremely generous. He later discovered why the important phrase was absent from their vocabulary. It was their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own, and every kindness with an equal or superior gesture of love. Mark Brian, the young min-

ister, realized they don’t say “thank you,” because they do their thanks. Advocating the dismissal of an indispensable phrase wouldn’t be prudent, but the addition of such a custom would truly give new meaning to our expressions of gratitude. You may have heard CHAPLAIN'S CORNER that “actions speak louder than words.” In a society that is on the move and seems to be moving faster NAS Key West each and every Command Chaplain day, maybe we Lt. could pull back throttle Scott Mason the and give some time to show our gratitude with action. Here in America we do see the challenges of our communities with poverty and homelessness

but we are still very blessed and fortunate to have the resources that we have. Being able to utilize our fortunes and express our thanks to someone may be more of a blessing than it would be a burden. So the next time you have the opportunity to express your gratitude, think about the Kwakiutl Indians and show your gratitude and love to your neighbor through an action. Here are tips to follow: • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. • Stay home while cooking the turkey and check on it frequently. • Keep children at least three feet away from the stove or oven when they are being used. • Keep children away from hot food and liquids steam and splashes from
