Be a ‘Good Samaritan’

A Oct. 27 1922 - The Navy League of the U.S. sponsors the first celebration of Navy Day to focus public attention on the importance of the Navy.

Oct. 28 1882 - Orders are issued for the first naval attaché, Lt. Cmdr. French Chadwick, to be sent to London.

Oct. 29 1814 - The first steam-powered Navy warship, Fulton, launches at New York City.

Oct. 30 1799 - William Balch becomes the Navy’s first commissioned chaplain.

Oct. 31 1956 - The Navy lands seven men in an R4D Skytrain on the ice at the South Pole. They are the first men to stand on the South Pole since Capt. Robert Scott in 1912.

Nov. 1 1841 - The “Mosquito Fleet,” commanded by Lt. Cmdr. J. T. McLaughlin, carries 750 Sailors and Marines into the Everglades to fight the Seminole Indians.

multitude of groups came to the aid of Keys residents after Hurricane Irma blew through, but there is one group that I would like to focus on in my column today. I am sure many of you have seen a bus or van with “Samaritan’s Purse” on the side of the vehicle around the Keys. “Samaritan’s Purse” is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization that has been providing physical and spiritual aid to hurting people worldwide since 1970. They have helped many who are victims of war, poverty, diseases, natural disasters or famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love. If you go to www. samaritanspurse.org you will find the organization has almost 20 different ministry projects, including Hurricane Irma recovery. Today, however, I want to focus on the organization’s project “Operation Christmas Child.” There are different ways to help out with Operation Christmas Child and many put in a lot of time to make sure gift boxes are delivered to children around the world. This project has grown leaps and bounds

since Dave Cooke and his wife Gill started the project. Although Key West isn’t near of the processing centers, we have the opportunity to support this ministry project from here in our community. On November 5th at 5:30 Naval Air Station Key West’s Religious Ministries Department has organized a gift box packing party for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Sigsbee Community Center. Donations of CHAPLAIN'S hygiene items, small toys and CORNER school supplies - all that can fit into a shoebox - are being collected so that volunteers NAS Key West at the packing Command Chaplain party can fill Lt. Cmdr. shoeboxes for Scott Mason boys and girls ranging in age from 2 - 4, 5 - 9, and 10 - 14. This is a project my family enjoys doing each year. If you would like to donate items or volunteer to pack boxes, please contact me at 305-293-2318. When we look at the story of the Good Samaritan found in Luke 10:25-37, Jesus tells us to “Go and do likewise.” If you are familiar with the Good Samaritan you know it is a parable about the love God asks us to show for our neighbor. The story tells of a travel-

shooting gallery. Activities include face painting, a photo booth, petting zoo, train rides, door prizes and a car smash. NAS Key West Fire & Emergency Services will be on site with a fire safety demonstration. Sponsors are Fury Water Adventures Key West, Key West Military Affairs Committee, Southernmost VFW Post 3911, Waste Management, Wayne’s Auto, NAS Key West Homes and NAS Key West Chief Petty Officers Association. For more information, call 305-293-2783.

er who was stripped, beaten and left for dead alongside a road. The traveler was avoided by two other men until the Samaritan found him. Although the Samaritan and injured man were from groups that typically despised each other, the Samaritan still stopped to help the injured man. I have seen many people lend a helping hand during this time of difficulty in the Keys and it has been encouraging to see. I pray that this mindset isn’t lost after people put their lives back together. There are always opportunity’s to help others less fortunate than you, whether by participating in projects like Operation Christmas Child or by volunteering at places like the Star of the Sea Outreach Mission. Whatever the opportunity, I challenge you to follow the lead of the Good Samaritan and not the men who ignored the man left for dead. Please join us at 10:30 a.m. Sundays in the Sigsbee Community Center for worship service with our Praise Band and Children’s Church. Visit our Facebook page (Truman Chapel) for upcoming events. If you are in need of chaplain care, please call your Chaplains at 305-293-2318, Naval Air Station Key West, or 305-2928788 Coast Guard Sector Key West.

f you’ve ventured down to Duval Street this week, you’ve more than likely noticed visitors wearing elaborate costumes and bars packed for special activities. It’s Fantasy Fest in Key West. With the event in full swing, it’s easy to forget about the risks and hazards that can occur at large festivals, even in small towns. “Always be careful and be aware of your surroundings,” said Naval Air Station Key West’s Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Danielle Martin. “Also, be sure to keep an eye on your drinks.” According to the Navy’s official website, www. navy.mil, there were 6,083 reports of sexual assault

in the Navy in 2015 with 5,240 involving service members who were victims. “If you go out together, leave together,” added Martin. “Using the buddy system is important.” Sexual assault victims can reach Martin at 786383-7873 or the 24-hour SAPR line at 305-7971408. Assault isn’t the only concern; there is also the issue drinking too much and losing control. “If you are going to drink, drink responsibly,” said NAS Key West Drug and Alcohol Programs Advisor BMC Cedric Taylor. “Social media is unforgiving, so don’t get caught doing something unbecoming of a Sailor.” Other tips for those wanting to imbibe include see safety page 5

Halloween Fire Safety Tips

KKK When choosing a costume, stay away from billowing or long trailing fabric. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see out.

avyal Branch Health Clinic Key West got into the spirit of Halloween, hosting its annual ‘Haunted Clinic’ Oct. 21. This year’s clinic featured a haunted carnival, sinister doctors and nurses as well as the Spider Queen.

KKK Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume.

KKK Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs, and heaters. KKK It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle in a jack-o-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit. When lighting candles inside jack-o-lanterns, use long, fireplacestyle matches or a utility lighter. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.

Use flashlights as alternatives

to candles or torch lights when decorating walkways and yards. They are much safer for trick-ortreaters, whose costumes may brush against the lighting. If your children are going to Halloween parties at others’ homes, have them look for ways out of the home and plan how they would get out in an emergency.

Did you know?

KKK Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.

KKK Tell children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire. (Have them practice, stopping immediately, dropping to the ground, covering their face with hands, and rolling over and over to put the flames out.) Your Source for SAFETY Information
