University of Missouri-Kansas City On behalf of the Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community (SLPKC) Leadership Team, we hope that you are getting excited for the NASPA Annual Conference in Philadelphia! The Annual Conference is always such a special time for the KC, as it gives us the opportunity to network and engage with our colleagues from around the globe.

This NASPA Conference is especially significant this year, as it is NASPA’s 100th Anniversary, as well as our last conference as the SLPKC Co-Chairs. We have been so honored to serve as Co-Chairs throughout the 2016-2018 term. Some of the goals during our time as Co-Chairs included, but were not limited to: Increasing our online presence using social media and interactive features on the NASPA website. This includes an increase in our podcast and webinar offerings.

Finding opportunities for more face-to-face interactions of SLPKC members, both regionally and during our National Convention.

Ottawa, Canada.

SOAR! provides student leaders with many unique opportunities to challenge themselves in new and meaningful ways outside of the classroom, learn how to be an effective leader, understand foundations and

theories about leadership and their potential as a leader, personal philosophy of leadership, and attend informative and interactive workshops on a variety of trends and topics. They follow one of four conference themes (Continued on page 3)

Strengthening the relationships between SLPKC and the other KCs, which has allowed us to reach a broader audience of professionals.

Strengthening our Regional connections, finding new opportunities for our Regional Representatives to serve as resources for best practices and current research related to student training and development.

Providing opportunities for scholarly research opportunities for leadership educators in all aspects of leadership development and assessment.

We have been lucky to work with a diverse and dynamic group of SLPKC volunteers, who have helped us tackle these goals through their commitment to the SLPKC’s mission to serve as a resource for higher education professionals who have a professional interest in leadership training, education, and development. Thank you to all of the phenomenal volunteers and to the NASPA staff who have helped the SLPKC continue to grow and represent the field of leadership education in the best way possible!

Finally, we want to recognize and welcome our newest KC Chairs-elect, Avani Rana and Sean Ryan. Both of these professionals have a history of volunteer leadership on the KC, and we know that you can expect great things from them in the future. Congratulations, Avani and Sean!

We hope you find this newsletter helpful as you think about and plan for your 2018 Annual Conference. This edition of our newsletter will feature some of the wonderful events and sponsored sessions that we have available at this year’s conference. We hope that you will take advantage of all of these events and welcome the opportunity to speak with you about how you can get more involved in the KC activities throughout the year – be it on the Regional or National level.

Student Leadership Conference Continued (Continued from Page 1) throughout the day based on what they hope to learn, and attend sessions from a learning map that are facilitated in the way they personally learn best; through collaborative conversations, applying theory to practice, or experiential learning. Just before our keynote speaker, delegates hear three minute speeches from five well known student leaders about what leadership means to them. This unique component of the day allows for students to showcase the many pathways students take to become leaders in our community.

come back year after year to be part of the conference and experience the inspiring atmosphere that takes shape on campus as the conference occurs.

We have had the pleasure of hosting four amazing keynote speakers a SOAR!. In 2015, Neil Pasricha, the author of The Book of Awesome taught our students what it means to exude happiness and positivity in their daily lives. In 2016, Craig Kielburger, cofounder of Free the Children, inspired our students to become dedicated to join a movement of people coming together to change the world. In 2017, Arlene Dickinson, one of Canada’s most renowned independent marketing communications entrepreneurs, encouraged our students to remember where your success comes from, as a pathway towards selfconfidence and motivation for the future. This past January 2018, Colonel Chris Hadfield, Canadian pilot, engineer and astronaut, addressed our student leaders in one of the most noteable keynote speeches we have ever heard. His passion and inspiring message left everyone in the audience humbled and motivated to always strive for the best and never settle for anything less. He truly embodied what our SOAR! conference is all about, and reminded everyone that the sky doesn’t have to be the limit.

SOAR! has come a long way in the past four years, from a conference that was hosted in one of our smallest lecture halls with just under 400 delegates in its first year, to this year being held in our largest gymnasium to accommodate all 850 delegates! To date over 150 student leaders, Carleton alumni, staff, and faculty and community members, have shared their thoughts, wisdom and experiences with student leaders as presenters. We feel incredible fortunate to plan a conference where students can focus on skill development, explore new opportunities, embrace their own personal leadership philosophy and reflect on previous leadership experiences so that they can go forward into the community as strong leaders ready to reach their potential!

The SLP-KC recognizes the contributions of members who are transforming higher education through outstanding and innovative leadership programs and services. All NASPA members are encouraged to share successes and highlight good or promising practices in student leadership regarding research and assessment, influences on student learning in and outside the classroom, and programs, initiatives or courses that innovatively translate theory to practice. Individuals can nominate or self-nominate exemplary student leadership programs for the SLP-KC Spotlight Series. Selected programs will be spotlighted in our newsletter, through social media, and recognized at the NASPA SLP-KC annual conference gathering.

The NASPA community should take great pride in the accomplishments of individuals and institutions within the field of Student Affairs and specifically Leadership Development and Programs. Please help us in congratulating our 2018 NASPA SLPKC Awardees!

He is currently serving a two year term as Team Lead for Conference Engagement, managing coordinators for the Pre-Conference workshop, Special Events, Graduate Support, and Conference Program Review.

Dr. Susan Komives Research Award Daniel Jenkins, Ph.D., University of Southern Maine

Previously he worked at the University of Hawai 'iManoa in Residential Life where he served as RHA co-advisor and advisor to UHM's first chapter of NRHH. He possesses a B.A. in English and a M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration & Policy, both from the University of California at Riverside. As an undergraduate and graduate student, Aaron served on various campus and system-wide committees and was involved in several student organizations. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Higher Education Leadership from Azusa Pacific University. His research centers around Black student success, positive psychology, leadership for liberation and social change, CRT, and intersectionality to name a few.

Dan's research on leadership pedagogy and practice has made important contributions to what we know about the effectiveness of leadership education in and outside of the classroom. He has compiled one of the leading datasets on college leadership educator pedagogies, and is working with his co-author Dr. Kathy Guthrie on a forthcoming book about their findings called The Role of Leadership Educators: Transforming Learning. His prior work on instructor development and assessment of leadership learning was awarded the Association of Leadership Educators (ALE) paper of the year, an honor he has received twice. He has authored and co-authored over 40 papers and proceedings. Dan is an active member of the editorial board for the Journal of Leadership Studies (JLS), and has served as Guest Editor for two special issues of JLS focused on leadership pedagogy.

Outstanding Service to the Student Leadership Programs KC Aaron Jones, University of California at Santa Cruz Aaron Jones currently serves as African/Black/ Caribbean Retention Specialist in the African American Resource & Cultural Center at the University of California at Santa Cruz where he coordinates retention programs, builds community, and creates leadership opportunities for students in the African diaspora. He has served on the SLPKC Leadership Team since 2014 when he started as Communications Coordinator, later moving on to Page 6

Outstanding Contributions to Student Leadership Programs Award Rachel Carpenter, Pace University Rachel Carpenter currently serves in a dual role as the Assistant Dean for Assessment & Planning and the Director for Student Development & Campus Activities at Pace University in Pleasantville, New York. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies/Japanese and a Master of Science in Public Services Administration from the University of Evansville.

Rachel is also a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Management. Rachel has had 15 years of professional experience in higher education including residence life, study abroad, student

activities, volunteer services, and leadership. She finds joy in proving the value added by Student Affairs and the co-curricular experience in her assessment role. In addition to facilitating learning and development for students, Rachel is known as a cross-campus collaborator inspiring staff to develop their own competencies. Growing up in a naval family, Rachel spent most of her life living overseas. Rachel's current research interests include team dynamics, emotions, coaching, and team effectiveness. She enjoys backpacking, travel, and outdoor experiences.

The Leadership Center’s vision is to enhance Washington State University students’ leadership potential and abilities with innovative, dynamic, and transformative leadership programs. The center’s Nominees for Outstanding Leadership programming is divided into three tiers structured within Program of the Year the Social Change Model of Leadership and designed to BOLD (Business and Organizational Leadership take highly motivated students and develop them to be Development) Conference, Ithaca College future leaders at and beyond. NASPA ACTS NASPActs is a subgroup of the NASPA Division of Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice. It attempts to develop activism efforts at the Annual Conference and throughout the year to embolden our mutual commitment to diversity and social justice. In effect, activism becomes an extension of NASPA’s commitment to diversity and social justice.

For the last several years, NASPActs has made an effort at the Annual Conference to provide accessible yet provocative activism efforts. Below is a video showing the march that we hosted at the NASPA Annual Conference in Indianapolis, 2016: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnilH0gmshI This year, NASPActs will empower students’ voices at the Rally for Students Rights, held on Tuesday, March 6th from 2-3:30pm. We will gather on the Broad Street exit from the Convention Center and march to the Thomas Paine Plaza, two blocks away.

What you can do: 1.

Spread the word! We will be posting flyers on social media and on the NASPA website, but your support in getting people excited about the rally will be instrumental toward its success.

Please also add our event to your KC Guide to be published in advance of the Annual Conference.

Get involved! If you wish to volunteer toward final planning and implementation of the rally, please email me and we will include you on future meetings. We will also be tabling at the Annual Conference, providing not only publicity for the rally, but also information regarding how to bring activism to your home state or campus.

Nominate a student speaker! Whether you know an undergraduate or graduate student who lives near Philly or you are a NUFP mentor for a NUFP fellow who will be attending the conference, we want to amplify students’ voices through this rally. We are particularly seeking students with marginalized identities who have been negatively impacted by the national and political climate in the last year.

SLPKC Sponsored Programs at NASPA March 5, 9:05AM: Knowing Their Values: Implications for Student Affairs Professionals Ever wonder how character education happens in college? To understand and encourage development in college, values clarification is a first step. This presentation will outline a phenomenological study that found students clarify their values through: role models, peer relationships, campus engagement and leadership courses.

Findings from this research help to explain the experience of how junior-level students clarify values in their collegiate experience and inform the practice of character education and leadership curriculum development in colleges and universities.

March 5, 3:40PM: The LID Model: Applications for Intentionally Developing and Assessing Student Leaders On fast-paced college campuses, intentionality, individualization, and integration are what students crave, but with growing student populations, how do you meet the needs of every student? At Texas A&M, the LID Model serves as a vehicle to meet students where they are developmentally, informs the practice of coaches in a division-wide leadership certificate program, and functions as an assessment tool for every phase of the program. Come build self-efficacy in incorporating the LID model into your professional practice.

March 6, 3:40PM: Let's DRAG-IT! A Framework for Facilitating Critical Reflection and Student Learning DRAG-IT is an acronym to help practitioners facilitate learning through reflective conversations and a series of questions.

This interactive program will introduce the research and inspiration behind DRAG-IT, and allow participants to practice the DRAG-IT tool. Participants will leave equipped with a framework to foster student learning and leadership development in their programs and various functional areas. This innovative session will leave you excited to DRAG-IT and lead critical reflection with students.

The Inter-Association Leadership Education Collaborative (ILEC) The Inter-Association Leadership Education Collaborative (ILEC) represents a 4 year effort by 8 national higher education associations to identify a global leadership education agenda for higher education.

The fragmentation of the field of leadership education provides multiple impediments to the advancement of leadership education and evidence of our leadership development work. Our presentation will share the background of our work and the 3 strategic priorities the group is charging the field of college student leadership education and discipline of leadership studies to address by 2020.
